WELCOME

Welcome to yet another exciting autumn season at DanceEast. I will be honest, I thought we would struggle to follow the programme we presented this time last year, however, we think we have done it with three world premieres and some amazing opportunities for both dance and music audiences. Where to start with so much to talk about… Anybody that follows dance in the press will be aware that there is a big, ongoing debate about the lack of profile for female choreographers in the UK. Consequently, DanceEast is particularly proud to be hosting the first performance of The BENCH project with RUN. The project is a beacon initiative by 2Faced Dance Company to develop around 18 of the UK’s most promising female choreographers.

If you are wondering how to celebrate Halloween, Arthur Pita and HeadSpaceDance have come together to create a double bill of ‘dark’ dance as a special seasonal offering (please note the age guidance, this is not for young audiences). We do, however, have a very special treat for younger people and their families, Jasmin Vardimon’s new adaptation of the children’s classic Pinocchio, our Christmas show this year. This will sell out, so don’t leave it until the last minute (like I usually do!) to book! In October we are collaborating with Aldeburgh Music to celebrate the work of Benjamin Britten with a weekend of music and dance, featuring the work of the extraordinary Richard Alston Dance Company. As part of this partnership we will also be presenting a special one-off satellite event in Orford Church that will be featuring new work from DanceEast’s Choreographic Award winner, Joseph Toonga. Didy Veldman, another recipient of the DanceEast Choreographic Fund, will also be premiering her work. Music lovers should note that she has been collaborating with the amazing Alexander Balanescu who will be performing live! If you supported the Choreographic Development Fund, I would like to personally thank you and encourage you to join me at both of Didy and Joseph’s performances to see for yourselves the difference your contributions have made. I could go on, but there is not space here. If you are excited by this autumn’s season and the great participation work we do, please consider becoming a friend, you can help us from as little as a £1 a week. A little bit of money can make a big difference, so why not have a look on our website for further details. I look forward to seeing you soon. Brendan

These pieces promise iconic choreography and stirring performances to captivate audiences. Thomas Hauert’s Notturnino takes inspiration from ‘Tosca’s Kiss’, a documentary about retired opera singers. Delicately balancing the spontaneity found in children’s games and the memories of old age, the tightly structured improvisation results in a unique performance every time. Set and Reset/Reset is a restaging of Trisha Brown’s contemporary dance classic, ‘Set and Reset’. “If you were going to ask any choreographer to mark the Britten centenary, Richard Alston would be top of your list. For decades he has proved the most musical of our dancemakers and the one most attuned to the sensitivity and integrity of his chosen scores.

Aldeburgh Music and DanceEast present a compelling combination of choreography by Richard Alston, one of the most influential figures in dance and internationally recognised for his instinctive musicality. The programme features the world premiere of Alston’s choreography to Britten’s string orchestra arrangement of his beloved Henry Purcell’s Chacony. The drama of Phaedra (nominated for an Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production), contrasts with his succinctly intimate Holderlin Fragments (‘choreography that dazzles’ – The Stage). Rejoice in the Lamb ‘matches the charm of the music and whimsy of the text, and suggests the filtering, imagistic quality of Smart’s imagination’ – The New York Times. And the sheer exhilaration of Les Illuminations takes wild imagery from the life of French poet Arthur Rimbaud and lifts it to the heights in Britten’s inspired setting.

ARTHUR PITA & HEADSPACEDANCE STEPMOTHER / STEPFATHER In a new commission by DanceEast, award-winning Director and Choreographer, Arthur Pita, in collaboration with HeadSpaceDance, reimagines two earlier works to present a wickedly gruesome, darkly surreal double bill for the Halloween season. Stepmother leads us into a menacing world where macabre folklore meets the terrifying grotesque of Hollywood. A waiflike ‘Snow White’, living as a single parent, is pursued and poisoned by her abusive stepmother, leaving her unruly brood of children to reap their revenge on the vile ‘Wicked Queen’.

DISAPPEARING ACTS

Standing at the forefront of dance and digital work, award-winning choreographer Yael Flexer and digital artist Nic Sandiland create upfront and witty movement-driven works for the stage, galleries and public spaces. Operating on the threshold of visibility it offers subtle readings of the body, movement that disappears into the shadows or slips through unseen gaps in the curtains leaving lingering traces on the retina. Evocative images, stories and wry humour give voice to our experiences of disappearance, night-time and politically ‘dark times’. Bringing together an international team of collaborators, choreography is by Yael Flexer and the company, text by Wendy Houston, direction by Pete Phillips, costume design by Holly Murray, sound-score by Karni Postel, James Keane and Nic Sandiland and bespoke digital lighting by Nic Sandiland and Natalie Rowland. Disappearing Acts is an immersive live work and will be accompanied by Weighting, a new digital installation which will be in situ at the Jerwood DanceHouse the week leading up to the performance.

R O F E R T N G CE N I N I A R T D ADVANCE The DanceEast Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) is one of ten National Centres for Advanced Training with funding from the Department for Education (DfE), aimed at young people aged 10 to 18 years with exceptional potential in dance. As this is the most committed and intensive of DanceEast’s youth activity, training is suited to those who have aspirations to pursue a career in dance, or at least are ready to make a commitment to intensive training. The scheme is devised to prepare young dancers for full-time professional dance training and includes tuition in five core areas:

• Technique • Creative dance and choreography • Performance • Health education (including injury prevention, nutrition, Pilates and yoga) • Enrichment activities (including theatre trips). This combination of classes is intended to give students a strong basic grounding in technique and creativity, to enable them to apply to a range of vocational schools and universities with a broad set of skills. Soon we begin our search for young talent from across the region for next year. Schools workshops and public taster workshops in Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk will be available. Check the CAT page on our website to find out more.
