WELCOME TO OUR NEW SPRING SEASON As we start yet another year of great dance I would like to briefly reflect on 2019, the year that marked the tenth anniversary of the Jerwood DanceHouse. We are deeply indebted to all the people who have supported DanceEast over the first ten years, but I would like to say a special thank you to everyone that helped make last year’s anniversary celebrations such a huge success. When we started planning the programme for 2020 we knew that the momentum we had created in 2019 would be difficult to maintain, but we like a challenge and we are more than confident in the season of work that is coming up. An extraordinarily diverse range of artistic voices, two new premieres, and a very special offer for all young people! We are particularly proud to host Akram Khan Company’s premiere of Chotto Xenos (see pages 5 – 6). This is the company’s second work created for young audiences and their families – the first, Chotto Desh premiered here at the Jerwood DanceHouse to a sold-out audience in 2015. Chotto Xenos explores the untold stories of World War 1 and looks toward our future. Running alongside Akram Khan Company’s premiere we are taking part in See, Make & Do – working with arts venues across the East of England we will provide family friendly activities throughout the February half term (see pages 19 – 20). As part of this we have a variety of free workshops that are suitable for the whole family, including making your own Ghungroo bells and taking part in creative dance classes, all of which are centred around Chotto Xenos and World War 1.

Staying on the theme of young people, we are recruiting for our Centre for Advanced Training programme now so if you, or someone you know (aged 10 to 16 years old), may be interested in joining us and experiencing all the exciting opportunities that are available to our students, head over to pages 17 – 18 for more information on how to apply. It’s not just a new year, it’s also the start of a new decade, which is a good excuse to do something new. If you have not taken a class or watched a performance before, don’t waste a moment - get on the phone or go online and book something now. If you are lucky enough to already be an existing audience member or class attender, thank you for supporting us, we really appreciate your loyalty and want to wish you all a great year of dance. As we approach Easter, we will be presenting another premiere from the National Youth Dance Company. Last year, they chose Ipswich to host the first ever premiere by the company outside of London. We are absolutely delighted they decided to come back again and even more delighted that they are working with our company in residence, Russell Maliphant (see pages 15-16) to create their latest new work. It is a privilege to work with such a young, diverse and talented company – this is a must see, so book your tickets early as they always sell out.

ENOWATE Friday 31 January 7.30pm From £12 £9 concessions Enowate has been supported by Arts Council England, The Lowry, Dance East, Shoreditch Town Hall, One Dance UK, Poplar Union, Immortal Project and WN Studio.
DICKSON MBI Enowate uses popping and contemporary dance to express Dickson’s inner dialogue - as if he is a man speaking to his shadow. The performance will tell a story that is both intimate and one that everyone can relate to, asking the questions ‘who am I, and why am I here?’ Enowate translates as ‘truth stands’ and the inspiration for this performance came from a personal trip Dickson took to his family ancestral village in Cameroon. In this journey Dickson encountered a two-headed snake and a tiger that roared to announce his presence at a funeral. These experiences made him question his own identity, negotiating his London East End upbringing alongside his animism practice and the influences of his heritage. This will be the first time Dickson will perform at the Jerwood DanceHouse and we are very excited to welcome him. Dickson has a strong and compelling voice in dance and has worked with award winning artists such as Russell Maliphant and Boy Blue Entertainment. Don’t miss this opportunity!

AKRAM KHAN COMPANY How does war begin? And how does it end? It depends on who is telling the story. Inspired by Akram Khan's award-winning full length solo XENOS, Chotto Xenos will take young audiences back in time, exploring the often forgotten and untold stories of World War I colonial soldiers and shining a light on our present and future, through our past. Reimagined by Sue Buckmaster, Artistic Director of Theatre-Rites and creator of the highly successful Chotto Desh, this performance weaves together stunning choreography by Akram Khan, lighting design by Guy Hoare, costumes by Kimie Nakano and evocative visuals by Lucy Cash. With set by Ingrid Hu, this family production incorporates Domenico Angarano's stirring soundtrack, adapted from the original score by Vincenzo Lamagna. Akram has created two works for young audiences and they will both have premiered here at DanceEast - Chotto Desh in 2015 and now, Chotto Xenos. Akram Khan Company has established itself as one of the most innovative dance companies in the world. This premiere is an extraordinary opportunity for audiences in the East of England to see the company’s new work first. If you loved Chotto Desh, you'll want to bring your family along to see this - if you missed Chotto Desh, you won't want to miss this!

HANSEL L E T E R G & PRESENTED BY UCHENNA DANCE & THE PLACE
Saturday 7 March 1.00 & 4.00pm
This contemporary retelling of the classic fairy tale finds our two young heroes lost in London, overwhelmed by the sights, sounds and smells of the city. Together the brave duo must outwit the adults to find their way back to their family, in a show where kids are number one! We are looking forward to presenting this DanceEast commission after its successful season at The Place. The performance is an imaginative new take on a favourite fairy tale, weaving New York club styles of House, Waacking and Vogue, with African and Contemporary dance, in a show that will delight the whole family. A delightful fusion that delivers a magical retelling of Hansel & Gretel. Expect to groove in your seat as you are transported to a world far from yours, yet with some surprising similarities.
From £10, £7 concessions, £30 family ticket Age suitability 5+ years Co-commissioned by The Place, DanceEast, Rural Touring Dance Initiative and Strike a Light. Supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

RETURN N E V A E H TO Friday 27 & Saturday 28 March 7.30pm From £12, £9 concessions Age suitability 12+ years Return to Heaven has been supported by DanceEast and Wiltshire Creative.
MARK BRUCE COMPANY Two explorers (Dane Hurst, Eleanor Duval) search the dark mysteries of the ancient world and enter a perilous land beyond time and death. Hounded by scientists and supernatural forces, and trying desperately not to lose one another, they journey through lands of unleashed demons and gods to play their role in the resurrection of an ancient deity. Return to Heaven crosses lands, cultures and time to create a mythology and symbolism of its own. With influences of William Burroughs, old horror films and Victorian chillers, Return to Heaven presents visions of cursed tombs, jungles, science fiction nightmares and islands of paradise. The company’s previous visits here at DanceEast have been amongst our most successful performances - if you like theatre along with dancing then this is the show for you! With incredibly high production standards and set to music ranging from Penderecki to Tchaikovsky, Mark Lanegan and Harry Belafonte, this dance theatre performance will be visceral and poignant, intricately choreographed and laced with dark humour.
