WELCOME
In September 2009, the doors to the Jerwood DanceHouse officially opened – 10 years on we mark this significant achievement and finish the year on a high with a very special Autumn Season, featuring four premieres! It seems appropriate that we have a special connection with all the artists/ companies we are presenting this autumn – whether it’s through our Associate Artists Scheme (past and present) or returning choreographers and performers. It’s been a pleasure to work with these artists, watching them develop and grow, and you won’t want to miss the opportunity to see their work.
Brendan Keaney Artistic Director and Chief Executive
The season is as much about looking towards our future, as it is celebrating our accomplishments. We will be opening our doors to the public in September and invite everyone to give dance a go with our Open House (P17-18). Featuring class tasters and bitesize performances, it will give you a taste of everything that goes on at the Jerwood DanceHouse and how you can be part of it! Of course, it only makes sense to finish our anniversary year with a Christmas show from Arthur Pita. Arthur presented his seminal work 'God’s Garden' in our opening season back in 2009, and premiered the phenomenally successful Little Match Girl here at the Jerwood DanceHouse in 2013. This year he’ll be premiering Ten Sorry Tales (p15-16) and you can expect more of Arthur’s signature sense of theatre, extraordinary production standards and dark humour! There are big plans for this show, so make sure that you can say you saw it first when it opened here in Ipswich, as part of DanceEast’s 10 year anniversary celebrations. Just in case you are worried that we have pulled out all the stops for 2019 and next year is going to be a bit subdued, please don’t panic! We are busy preparing some amazing moments for 2020. We can’t say who, and we can’t say when, but there is going to be more than one serious artistic coup in 2020 that will sell out. If you don’t want to miss out, why not join our Friends scheme now and start getting the benefits of being part of DanceEast in this, our anniversary year.

emotive choreography. Born in Liverpool and trained at Rambert School, Julie is an internationally recognised performer who spent many years working with Merce Cunningham in New York, before returning to the UK to join the Michael Clark Company. In 2016, Julie established their own company with the aim of finding new movement vocabularies, addressing questions of identity and challenging gender roles. The evening will include m/y, performed by six dancers. The technicality of the movement language is contrasted by the fluid rules of relating, connecting and finding pleasure outside the dominant structures of patriarchal power. Referencing the novel, The Lesbian Body by Monique Wittig, m/y evokes a female physicality for the female gaze. “Julie Cunningham has long been known as an extraordinary dancer, renowned for the clarity and poise with which they’ve illuminated other people’s repertories. Now that they’ve turned choreographer we’re seeing another dimension to their talent, as they bring the meticulousness of their dancing to works that vibrate with their own very personal agenda.” The Guardian

BORN TO MANIFEST Friday 4 October 7.30pm From £12, £9 concessions HIP HOP CONTEMPORARY Supported by Arts Council England, DanceEast, The Place and Redbridge Drama Centre. Developed with Dance Base and B-Motion (Bassano).
JOSEPH TOONGA 'You say I’m a black guy. I know who I am, do you know who I am?’ Born to Manifest is a powerful new hip hop dance double bill that illuminates the experience of young black British men. Joseph Toonga draws from real life accounts to a create a poignant, responsive piece that simultaneously champions cultural identity and challenges racial stigmas. Set to an original score from Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante, this dynamic new dance work explores the themes of mental health and the power and privilege that still oppress and dictate. Joseph delivers stark home truths through the complexity and beauty of an individual’s journey. ‘I feel a responsibility as a black male to empower the younger generation as a role model and an example of how dance can provide a positive, successful route. Mental health and black men’s experiences of it is little discussed, which is why I am passionate about creating awareness to shift stigmas’ – Joseph Toonga. Joseph is another of our Associate Artists who we’ve been working with since 2015. We have loved watching Joseph progress over the years and seeing him become not only a successful and inspirational dance artist, but a great role model for young aspiring dancers. In 2016, Joseph co-founded Artists 4 Artists with Emily Crouch and Lee Griffiths — the UK’s first artist led initiative working to raise the visibility of the hip hop sector through artist development, producer support and wider industry conversations. Joseph is at the forefront of change within dance and by bringing together different dance forms he creates work that you’ll be able to relate to.

“I think the Jerwood DanceHouse gives people a sense of belonging, and that’s how it is for me, I think it has impacted the dance sector – when people from outside of the norm, who just want dance as a hobby, feel like they belong somewhere. There’s no separation for the artists and the community, we are all in the building making, creating, being around and being able to access all the same things which is really nice.” Joseph Toonga on celebrating 10 years of the Jerwood DanceHouse

WHILE YOU ARE HERE Friday 11 October 7.30pm From £12, £9 concessions Age suitability 12+ years. Contains swearing and sexual references. CONTEMPORARY ANIMATION Commissioned by DanceEast and The Place, supported by Arts Council England.
JONATHAN GODDARD AND LILY MCLEISH While You Are Here is a performance where dance and theatre meet, written by Eve Leigh and an exciting collaboration between Choreographer Jonathan Goddard and Director Lily McLeish. The piece explores the events that unfold over time in one small space. Simultaneously looking at the past, present and future, stories are connected through their location. Forgotten incidents ricocheting through the space as generations pass by – trying to make sense of life, death and time. While You Are Here questions our relationship to our environment and examines connections and legacies passing through centuries. The piece promises to be visually rich with the combination of dance, text and animation, showing time as an ever-evolving puzzle. Four world-class dancer-actors inhabit a striking world, created by designer Akhila Krishnan, with score by Max Pappenheim. Jonathan was the first contemporary dancer to win the Critics' Circle National Dance Award for Best Male Dancer in 2008 and went on to win Outstanding Male Performance and Best Male Dancer awards in 2014. Jonathan has performed as a dancer at DanceEast many times in the past, his last visit was the lead role in Macbeth (Mark Bruce, 2018). It’s a great moment for DanceEast to support Jonathan, who has contributed so much to dance performance, as he creates this new work to premiere here at the Jerwood DanceHouse.

SHOBANA JEYASINGH DANCE Fresh from the success of 2018’s Contagion (one of the year’s top ten dance works for The Guardian and Evening Standard), Shobana Jeyasingh Dance returns to DanceEast with Staging Schiele. Inspired by the extraordinary work and life of Austrian artist Egon Schiele, famous for his unflinching nudes and searing self-portraits, the piece scrutinises the eternal conundrum of the male artist and the female model. Four dancers inhabit Schiele’s highly-charged world of colour, masterful lines and unusual perspectives, a world that puts the human body on visceral display. Shobana Jeyasingh’s choreography matches the intensity of Schiele, engaging with his anxieties as well as his supreme self-confidence. Staging Schiele captures the artist’s self-conscious framing of himself and his work, throwing light on his brief meteoric rise to fame. Shobana is joined by an exceptional creative team – composer Orlando Gough, designer and visual artist Ben Cullen Williams and lighting designer Adam Carree, with costume design by Cottweiler.

RICHARD ALSTON DANCE COMPANY As we celebrate the tenth year of the Jerwood DanceHouse, we are delighted to present Richard Alston Dance Company’s fifth visit to Snape Maltings as part of the company's final tour – a significant moment for dance in the UK. Before the Jerwood DanceHouse, so much of our work took place at Snape Maltings, and it was with the very generous support of our audience in the region that our ambition to create a purpose-built dance facility was possible. So, it seemed only fitting to return to Snape Maltings in our tenth year to celebrate and say thank you for the support. Snape Maltings and the music of Benjamin Britten have long been close to Alston’s heart and for their final appearance in Suffolk, the company gives the world premiere of Alston’s new piece Shine On. This special performance will be dedicated to Lizzie Fargher, as a thank you for her generous support through The Tezmae Charitable Trust. Shine On is danced to a live performance by soprano Katherine McIndoe and pianist Jason Ridgway, of Britten’s first published songs, the W.H. Auden settings On this Island. Ridgway also plays for Brahms Hungarian, danced to Brahms’ hugely popular Hungarian Dances. This special programme also includes Voices and Light Footsteps, inspired by glorious Monteverdi madrigals and sinfonias, while the pulsating music of American composer Michael Gordon accompanies Martin Lawrance’s thrillingly energetic Detour.

Alexander’s recent, awe-inspiring production 8 Minutes took audiences on a breath-taking journey to the sun. His company’s new work, Overflow, is a compelling and timely exploration of the human condition in the era of big data, when personal information is used to predict our actions and human behaviour has become the most prized raw material of the economy. It features an exhilarating new score by Ryan Lee West (Rival Consoles), costumes by award-winning designer Ana Rajcevic, and a kinetic light sculpture from Children of the Light with creative technologists Fenyce and designer Guy Hoare. Alexander was an Associate Artist at DanceEast (2014 -2016), formerly an Associate at Rambert and is currently a New Wave Associate Artist at Sadler’s Wells Theatre. ‘Pita’s macabre cabaret confirms the choreographer as one of his generation’s leading storytellers’
BASED ON THE BOOK BY MICK JACKSON DIRECTED & CHOREOGRAPHED BY ARTHUR PITA
BALLO ARTHUR PITA Arthur Pita is celebrated for his surreal take on story-telling – combining dance, theatre, live music and song. There couldn’t be a more fitting end to our tenth anniversary year than a performance from a company who were with us at our opening Gala in September 2009 and performed as part of the Jerwood DanceHouse opening season in February 2010, with God’s Garden. We have a very special relationship with the company – having commissioned every one of their productions, all of which have been performed here. Ten Sorry Tales presents a collection of modern-day fables. From the child who sleeps for fifteen years, to the sinister sisters who prey on trespassers and the boy who brings butterflies back to life – Mick Jackson’s tales are by turns moving and gruesome, funny and dark. Beautifully eccentric and infused with gothic charm, Ten Sorry Tales will steal you away on a journey of curiosity. In this new commission by DanceEast and Sadler’s Wells, Ten Sorry Tales follows the success of Pita’s critically-acclaimed Metamorphosis (The Linbury, Royal Opera House), The Little Match Girl (DanceEast, Sadler’s Wells), The World’s Greatest Show (DanceEast, Royal Opera House) and Stepmother/Stepfather (DanceEast, The Place). “DanceEast is a wonderful place to grow; a safe environment where you can try out new ideas, with incredible audiences who are open to new work. We have a range of adult classes for you to try with styles including ballet, hip hop, contemporary, tap, Pilates and yoga. This season we wanted to highlight our yoga classes. Yoga is a safe and effective way to increase physical activity, especially strength, flexibility and balance, and is widely practised for health and relaxation. At DanceEast, we have three styles of yoga that you could try – Ashtanga, Hatha Flow and Hatha Yin. Ashtanga is a strong and active class which is based on a set sequence of postures linked together by the breath. No rest in between poses, but blissful relaxation at the end of class. Although no yoga experience is required, these classes are suitable for those with a reasonable level of strength, stamina and fitness. Hatha Flow sessions involve working in a series of poses and postures, which are either seated or standing. There is a focus on breath and overall wellbeing and these classes can help with stress and anxiety.

Hatha Yin emphasises the awareness of the breath and holding postures to allow time to really stretch and relax into poses. The class focuses on being meditative whilst holding stretches and developing awareness of thoughts, feelings and emotions. The aim of the class is to make you feel like you have worked, but also feel calmer, grounded and more relaxed. Some people find that the physical practice of yoga becomes a gateway into spiritual exploration, while others just enjoy a wonderful, low-impact workout that makes them feel great. Typically, a DanceEast yoga class will focus purely on the physical benefits of yoga. Turn over to see our class timetable and find a class for you!

Friday 26 July - Sunday 8 September Ipswich based artist Valerie Irwin spent almost every day over a year’s period making large observational drawings of the demolition of Cranfield's Flour Mill and the construction of the Jerwood DanceHouse. She then spent 16 months making 4,500 large charcoal drawings whilst also filling 25 sketch books.

CHANGE IN CHARCOAL - STUDIOS FROM SILOS BY VALERIE IRWIN
Valerie was invited onto the construction site to draw and document the redevelopment - from this opportunity she produced 800 drawings. She stayed on the site for 15 months as 23 storeys of the new Mill were built – including the Jerwood DanceHouse. This exhibition charts the progress of the work through a selection of drawings. We are thrilled to have Valerie's work exhibited in the Whistler Gallery to celebrate ten years of the Jerwood DanceHouse.
SEAVIEW TIM FARGHER Friday 13 September – Friday 27 September Working from his base in Suffolk, Tim Fargher specialises in oil paintings, watercolours and sculpture, as well as producing etchings and prints. His paintings and sculptures can be seen in many galleries and collections around the world. In this exhibition, Tim has brought together a collection of work from established and distinguished Suffolk artists that he admires and have exhibited at The SeaView Gallery in Walberswick. This exhibition includes the work of Laurence Edwards, Andrew Pringle and Helen Napper.
