WELCOME
Welcome to the start of a very important year for DanceEast. In 2009 the Jerwood DanceHouse opened its doors to the public and, here we are, in 2019 ready to celebrate the tenth anniversary. During this time, thousands of people have brought this fabulous building to life by participating in or watching great dance. The Jerwood DanceHouse has made Ipswich a first choice destination for dance artists to develop their skills, research, create and present new work. It has also had a major role in the regeneration of the town’s waterfront. The East of England is very lucky to have the Jerwood DanceHouse, and I am particularly proud to be leading DanceEast as it celebrates the tenth year operating in this fantastic facility. However, much of the credit for our success over the last ten years must go to my predecessor Assis Carreiro for making this building happen, a fantastic achievement by any standard. Brendan Keaney Artistic Director and Chief Executive
Our Spring Season is packed with celebratory moments and includes not one but three premieres from James Cousins, Russell Maliphant Company, our new company in residence and National Youth Dance Company (NYDC). We feel particularly privileged to be the first UK venue, outside of London, to be hosting a NYDC premiere, up until this year they have always premiered their new work on Sadler's Wells main stage. So, this is a new development for the company and a great opportunity for the people of Ipswich! NYDC are no strangers to Ipswich however, the Jerwood DanceHouse has always been a regular feature of their national tours. In addition, throughout the year they have worked in our state-of-the-art studios. We are particularly proud that over the years many of our Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) Students are selected to join this great company. We are now recruiting for CAT 2019, if you, or someone you know, may be interested in joining us and the exciting opportunities that are available to our CAT students, head over to page 21 for more information on how to apply or drop by and pick up a prospectus. This is just the start of what we promise will be a really exciting year, we have lots of treats in store, in the meantime we would love to know how the Jerwood DanceHouse has impacted you, tweet us, tag us and tell us your story, and don’t forget #LuckyIpswich

EPILOGUES JAMES COUSINS COMPANY
Friday 8 & Saturday 9 February 7.30pm
Feminists proclaim, ‘time's up’. Misogynists win presidencies. Are we moving forward? Or hurtling back in time?
From £12, £9 concessions
This new production, inspired by stories of division and separation, weaves three duets into one emotive evening, leaving you shifting from the familiar to states of dreamlike wonder. Two new works sit alongside the ‘visually breath-taking’ (The Stage) Within Her Eyes, in which the female dancer never once touches the floor. Within Her Eyes was originally commissioned by DanceEast and premiered here in 2012. The piece is now part of the GCSE dance syllabus and James and his company frequently visit the Jerwood DanceHouse to lead workshops for students studying his work.
Supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. Commissioned by The Place, Corn Exchange Newbury, DanceEast and Nottingham Lakeside Arts. Further supported by Studio Wayne McGregor through FreeSpace.
James was a DanceEast Associate Artist 2012-2014, and what better way to start our 10-year celebrations than with a premiere from an old friend? We’ll also be celebrating how far Within Her Eyes has come since its 2012 premiere. You won’t want to miss this chance to experience the performance that has wowed audiences all over the world; it's guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat.

PRESENTED BY DANCEEAST AND ENCOREEAST A day of workshops, performances and debates for older dancers, along with artists, practitioners and choreographers working with dancers over 50. The day will celebrate and explore issues such as the nature of artistry, its relationship to the older performer, and how it can be taught and learned. It will challenge assumptions about what older dancers can bring to dance, how they want to be represented in performance, how they can dance and what they can dance about.

“Very beautiful and cinematic ... like in Handmaid's Tale you've got to hold on to the last fragment of hope, that there's a way out, a hope of change.” - Audience member
E S I R I L L I T S TRIBE// TRIBE//'s debut work Still I Rise is a call to arms, a defiant and uplifting work danced by a female ensemble. Raw and emotive dance is combined with choreographer Victoria Fox’s powerful yet articulate movement style. The work channels the resilient, unapologetic nature of Maya Angelou’s poem. It is unflinching, relentless hope for the human spirit that binds this visceral dance work together. From pounding beats to stirring classical arias, the music drives the dancers onward. Falling down, gathering up ... we rise.
From £12, £9 concessions CONTEMPORARY Thanks to Arts Council England, Pavilion Dance South West, Clearcut, The Studio. Supported by DanceEast.
This exciting new work was performed at the Jerwood DanceHouse as a work in progress during Pulse festival 2017, it was brilliantly received by the audience then and we have no doubt that the final piece is going to inspire us all.

DANCEEAST IN PARTNERSHIP WITH UNIVERSITY OF BEDFORDSHIRE
University of Bedfordshire Saturday 9 March 7.30pm
Last year the One Dance UK U.Dance National Festival came to the East of England for the first time ever. It was lively, it was full of talent and it was a weekend that still inspires us. This year, for the first time, there will be two Regional Platforms in the East of England - allowing more youth groups the opportunity to take part in the festival. We are honoured to be hosting one of them at the Jerwood DanceHouse, the second will be at the University of Bedfordshire.
MIXED DANCE STYLES YOUTH DANCE Both of these performances are bookable through DanceEast.
The Regional Platforms provide youth groups from all over the East with the opportunity to come together and celebrate youth dance and the impressive progress it’s making. Like the U.Dance National Festival, you can expect energetic evenings with performances from local dance groups and a diverse range of dance styles; there will be something for everyone from these young emerging artists, including a special performance from DanceEast’s very own performance company Boys United.

O E M O R & T E I L JU LOST DOG Lost Dog’s new show reveals the true story of Romeo and Juliet. It turns out they didn’t die in a tragic misunderstanding, they grew up and lived happily ever after. Well, they lived at least. Now they are 40ish, at least one of them is in the grips of a mid-life crisis, they feel constantly mocked by their teenage selves and haunted by the pressures of being the poster couple for romantic love. They have decided to confront their current struggles by putting on a performance – about themselves. Their therapist told them it was a terrible idea.
Photo: Zoe Manders
With Lost Dog’s blend of dance, theatre and comedy this duet, directed by Olivier Award nominated Ben Duke, takes on our cultural obsession with youth and inevitable issues with longevity.

TORUS From £12, £9 concessions CONTEMPORARY DANCE THEATRE Commissioned by Birmingham Dance Hub, DanceXchange and Sadler’s Wells. Co-commissioned by The Place (Choreodrome). Supported by Birmingham University, Birmingham Hippodrome, La Caldera, RocaUmbert.
HUMANHOOD Torus is a journey through the flow of nature. Humanhood’s first group piece draws inspiration from our tribal roots and will take you on a journey of chaos and stillness. As rhythm takes over your senses, will you stay in touch with reality? The research behind the work is rooted in physics, as well as in their personal insight into Eastern mysticism. Humanhood are fascinated by the connections that lie between these seemingly different fields and how they shape our human experience. Since the creation of their first duet, the company is attracting a rapidly growing following, both in the UK and the international scene. This will be the company’s first visit to the Jerwood DanceHouse and you won’t be disappointed.
