WELCOME

I am incredibly excited by the line-up of performances that we have this autumn; it is another special season with an exciting balance between new and familiar faces. We are kicking off with a new collaboration with the Roman River Music Festival. To Be Felt, by choreographer Joseph Toonga, was originally commissioned for Orford church last year as part of the Britten Dances programme. Joseph is reviving this for St Martin’s Church, Colchester, so if you like your music live this will be a real treat. Our first performance in the DanceHouse will be National Dance Company Wales, followed in October by Scottish Dance Theatre. If you want to see some fantastic dancing and great contemporary choreography, we are offering tickets for both shows for just £20, as a special introductory offer. Alex Whitley premiered his new work in London in June; this is an opportunity to experience a Sadler’s Wells main stage production in a very intimate setting. Avant Garde Dance premiered Fagin’s Twist at the Jerwood DanceHouse in 2016, playing to packed houses since. It seems only right that the last UK shows should be back here. Make sure you don’t miss out, or if you saw it last April, make a return visit to see how the performance has grown. To make it even more tantalising, we are pairing Fagin’s Twist with Cockfight by a truly awesome Australian company The Farm, in another special see both shows for £20 ticket offer. Fans of Joss Arnott will know how lucky we are to be getting the work back here; if you have not seen his work before I recommend you get a ticket.

N

A season would not be a season without something magical for children, and this time we have The Buildy-uppy Dance Show from Tom Roden and Anna Williams (now known as Anatomical), the perfect interactive family treat for 5+years. Our Christmas shows have always been very special and this year will be no exception, with another exclusive for Ipswich – it’s The Borrowers. We will be presenting the first previews before it tours next year, another ‘see it first at DanceEast’ moment! I look forward to seeing you soon at the DanceHouse. Brendan

We are delighted to welcome Scotland’s national contemporary dance company to the Jerwood DanceHouse for the first time. The company commissions some of the most exciting choreographers and artists from all over the world to make bold and daring new works. Dreamers by Slovakian-born, Belgian-based choreographer Anton Lachky, is about people who dare to dream while not being asleep. He encourages us to make sense of apparent nonsense, and challenges us to see the close relationship between reality and surrealism. This highly physical work is set to music by Bach, Haydn, and Chopin.

CONTEMPORARY

TuTuMucky by London-based choreographer Botis Seva is set to a score of original music by beat producer Torben Lars Sylvest, and blurs the boundaries between ballet, contemporary, and hip hop. The work is inspired by an interest in social order, structured lifestyles and hierarchies, and explores how, in a world full of order, we find peace in chaos.

Two blokes in an office. One older, one younger, each body pushed to its limits. A cross between The Office and an Australian style cage-fight, this game of comical one-upmanship builds to a moment of impact where everything is suspended. A flash of bared teeth, the desperation of needing to prove yourself versus the need to hold on to what you’ve got. Cockfight explores the power play between men, the frailty of the ageing body, and questions culture’s desperate desire for achievement. Skilfully enacting a full-throttle mash-up of extreme physical risk-taking, graceful movement and slow-mo fight sequences, this darkly humorous and surprisingly tender piece of dance theatre by The Farm, sees long-time collaborators Joshua Thomson and Gavin Webber reassess who is in charge. Without each other these two performers have nothing left to fight for.
