“…marvellously intense… the double edges of clarity and complexity, contrast and connection, are pure Jeyasingh.”

Internationally-recognised choreographer Shobana Jeyasingh has been creating dynamic, fearless and enigmatic dance works for over 27 years. She is hugely influential and has collaborated with some of the most exciting musicians and artists of our times. Material Men redux is performed by two dazzling dancers of Indian heritage, each choosing styles that couldn’t be more different; classical Indian and hip hop. They share a history rooted in the dark realities of colonial migration and plantation labour and this performance will explore the violence of loss and the creation of new ways of belonging. Material Men redux features a score by acclaimed Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin including sound design by Leafcutter John. It is played live on stage by The Smith Quartet.

the high-energy performance of Beauty of the Beast in June 2016, this performance delves deep into an issue which affects one in four of us each year. Turning the spotlight on mental health and the things we choose to hide, this captivating double bill features a rich mix of dance and movement styles, intimate solos, emotive duets and powerful ensembles. Touching, sad, funny and absurd, this is relevant and up-to-the-minute dance theatre at its best. Witness, the main piece in this double-bill, is a sensitive portrayal of how loved ones cope when mental health problems take hold of someone close. Raw and insightful, Witness breaks down preconceptions by uncovering the realities of an illness, which is too often misunderstood. Words Unspoken, a short work exploring the untold secrets of the performers on stage, is the opening piece of this double-bill. Six dancers perform flawlessly formed movements in a striking and synchronised style. The effect is hypnotic and provides the perfect opener to what is a captivating production.
