WELCOME
I’m delighted to announce our busiest summer programme yet with, we hope, something for everyone to enjoy. If you want to see some fresh new work, we are teaming up yet again with the New Wolsey Theatre’s Pulse Festival to present a dynamic double bill from Rhiannon Faith and The Hiccup Project, plus an exclusive work in progress presentation of Gecko’s new piece The Wedding which they will be touring in Spring 2017. The second annual Move | Be Moved Festival in July provides plenty of opportunities for local community groups to get involved with performances and events, including HOST, a day packed with workshops, presentations and performances relating to older people dancing.
Brendan Keaney Artistic Director & Chief Executive
As always there is lots happening for and by young people, don’t miss The Adventures of The Little Ghost, a family friendly immersive performance and, if you want to dance rather than watch, we have Summer Schools for 7 – 11 years and 12 – 18 years in August.
CONTENTS
If you were lucky enough to see National Youth Dance Company in 2015 then you won’t need persuading to book for 2016. If you have not seen them before, grab this opportunity, they are amazing!!!

Classical dance fans are also in for some real treats with two exciting productions taking place outside of the DanceHouse. DanceEast is absolutely delighted to be associated with Wild Space, a promenade immersive performance by National Ballet of Canada Choreographic Associate Robert Binet. With live music, Robert has assembled a stellar international cast of young dancers from around the world to perform in the beautiful location of Abbey Hall just outside Eye. We are also delighted to be working in partnership with Suffolk Community Foundation and The Royal Ballet’s Gary Avis (and DanceEast Trustee) to bring Royal Ballet friends and Anton du Beke to perform at Ipswich Regent. Finally we have some really exciting projects taking place in local schools at the moment. If you are a teacher and would like to talk to us about developing a programme to inspire and nurture high quality dance in your school, please get in contact with us and we would be happy to create a bespoke package. There is too much going on at DanceEast to include here, so do look on our website where you will see a range of other initiatives, plus you will soon be able to see the autumn programme and book for Pinocchio, our Christmas show, to be created by the very talented Jasmin Vardimon.

RHIANNON FAITH SCARY S**T A show about friendship, being a woman, and asking for help. Rhiannon Faith suggested she needed therapy to cure her ‘talking on the telephone phobia’. Maddy thought she might need therapy to help tackle anxieties about her fertility. They attended sessions led by therapist Joy Griffiths. What they found out about themselves and each other ran far deeper. The work is a series of vignettes, based on a social experiment and deals with the physiological and psychological behaviours anchored in ‘Fear’ and performed using theatre, comedy, movement and performance. The performers use autobiographical text and the voice recordings of psychologist Joy Griffiths and perform a smutty, shocking and frank response.

THE HICCUP PROJECT MAY-WE-GO-ROUND? Brighton-based duo The Hiccup Project is Chess Dillon-Reams and Cristina MacKerron who first danced together as friends and went on to both train at Northern School of Contemporary Dance. May-We-Go-Round? is their first production, a highly successful collision of fiercely energetic dance and comedic theatre, in which Chess and Cristina take audiences on a bittersweet journey on the merry-go-round of romance. Honest, provocative and laugh-out-loud funny, it celebrates love and lust in all its messy and confusing forms. Ultimately, it’s a show about friendship, the bond between these two women generating an enthralling, endearing portrait for audiences to relish. Winner of Fringe Review Award for Outstanding Theatre and South East Dance ‘Most Surprising’ Performance Award at their Brighton Fringe Festival debut in 2015, and also shortlisted for the Audience Choice Award.

GECKO A work in progress sharing created by Amit Lahav As the world becomes more connected and our own country is enriched with multiple ethnicities, Gecko will draw on influences of cultures from around the world, exploring the ritual of the wedding and its place in modern society. Taking as the starting point the relationship between two people and the contract that they enter into, The Wedding investigates the marriage between the individual and the state. "Are we a happy couple or are we entrapped, and is divorce an option?" Join local Ipswich company Gecko as they share the first findings of their new show, which will premiere in spring 2017.

COMPANY CHAMELEON Rage Against The Machine, athleticism, beauty and Bach. Company Chameleon’s unforgettable and critically-acclaimed dance piece offers a funny, moving and subversive look at male group dynamics. Following a group of friends through a range of scenarios, expectations are high if you’re part of the gang. There’s a need to impress and earn peer respect. But with non-stop bravado, complex dynamics and a shifting pecking order, how far will things go? Beauty Of The Beast peels back and uncovers the many faces of masculinity – strength, vulnerability, camaraderie and hostility, and explores what happens when affiliation becomes identity. Laugh out loud funny in parts, dark and menacing in others, this tightly packed piece holds a mirror to our times, and is both emotional and thought-provoking. Showcasing Company Chameleon’s unique signature style, an exciting mix of dance and movement techniques are accompanied by the stunning athletic ability of six male dancers. Soundtrack includes original music by Miguel Marin, alongside Bach, Sizzla and Rage Against the Machine, adding to the drama of this must-see dance theatre production.

ROBERT BINET DanceEast is proud to be supporting choreographer Robert Binet and playwright Rosamund Small in the creation of a groundbreaking and thought-provoking ballet, ‘Terra Incognita’. For one night, every city in the world went dark. The lights went out, to clear the sky, for us to better see the new world. This so we could all see it clearly and decide if it was right for us. A new Earth. It has trees, and plants and water, and air. It had everything, Except us. So we thought, We must be missing. Wild Space will perform 'Terra Incognita' at the beautiful Abbey Hall in Eye (Suffolk) with five dancers: Emma Hawes of The National Ballet of Canada, Yasmine Naghdi of The Royal Ballet, Ida Praetorius and Andreas Kaas of The Royal Danish Ballet and Martin ten Kortenaar of The Dutch National Ballet. The performance will be accompanied live by violinists Jonathan Morton from the Scottish Ensemble and Clio Gould from The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

ABOUT DANCEEAST
CHOREOGRAPHIC DEVELOPMENT AWARD The Choreographic Development Fund was set up in 2014 thanks to a generous legacy gift from David Andren. It has since been further supported by kind individual donations and is used to support and nurture choreographic talent. In October 2015, DanceEast announced the first successful recipients of the award. Joseph Toonga received an award of £5000 and it has proved integral to his artistic development. ‘The Choreographic Development Fund has supported my work by giving me the opportunity and time to sit and research and investigate before going into the studio. I’ve been visiting libraries and museums gathering information to support my creative work. My work has benefited greatly, I’ve been able to spend more time in the studio and I’ve been working closely with a composer to investigate how music can enhance my work.’
