For this special occasion, Russell Maliphant Company presents both new and classic work, including the revival of the iconic Broken Fall with music by Barry Adamson – originally performed by Sylvie Guillem and the BalletBoyz. It will be presented in this programme by Maliphant’s own company of exceptional dancers who will also perform new creations including a quintet and a solo for former Royal Ballet dancer Dana Fouras with a commissioned score by Mukul and costumes by Stevie Stewart. Who Killed Bambi? is a collaborative work between dance, theatre, music and stage design, bringing together an exciting team of artists including theatre director and international associate at The Royal Court Theatre Richard Twyman and composer, cellist and artist in residence at The South Bank Centre Oliver Coates. It takes inspiration from recent political examples of individuals standing against the group and portrays the subsequent hunt to silence them as a large-scale fur installation transforms the stage into a fierce hunting ground. Metropolis reflects on our complicated relationship with the city. We build to control, simplify, protect, but the city, much like a wild animal, resists domestication. A cast of exceptional performers builds or scatters a landscape of bricks and constantly redefines borders in their quest for comfort, security and happiness.

A NEW DOUBLE BILL COMBINING MISCHIEVOUS QUESTIONS AND VIRTUOSIC PERFORMANCE Candoco Dance Company, the world’s leading contemporary dance company of disabled and non-disabled performers, has been creating acclaimed and cutting edge work for over twenty years. In this new double bill, Candoco presents commissions from two of the most exciting artistic talents working in the UK today. Visual artist Hetain Patel returns to the Jerwood DanceHouse with Let’s Talk About Dis, a new, playful and intimate piece that builds on an exploration of the dancers’ personalities and bodies, interrogating questions of what identity is and how it is formed. With seductive charm, Hetain challenges audiences to think beyond surface appearances, exposing hidden prejudices and absurd political correctness. DanceEast Associate Artist Alexander Whitley creates visually striking dance pieces, which incorporate sinuous and beautiful movement articulations. Set to a mesmerising score by composer Nils Frahm, this is a resonant and emotive piece performed with reckless flair.

LUCA SILVESTRINI’S PROTEIN Award-winning Protein returns with its most playful collaboration to date as four vocalists and four dancers all sing for their supper in a dining setting that may contain food... This witty piece of dance and music theatre, curated by choreographer Luca Silvestrini and renowned composer Orlando Gough, is inspired by social occasions and life at mealtimes. The performers will invite you to sit at a table, offer a tasting menu and then serve you a show that explores our relationship with food: the pop of a cherry tomato, or the way we just can’t help devouring another person’s leftovers. All sound is performed a cappella as movement is composed and music is choreographed, creating a unique, visceral experience of indulgence, nostalgia and mischief.

THE LITTLE MATCH GIRL

ARTHUR PITA

Following the world premiere here in 2013 and a sell-out run at Sadler’s Wells last Christmas, we are delighted to welcome back celebrated director and choreographer Arthur Pita with his magical dance theatre show The Little Match Girl. Based on the classic Christmas story, this touching tale of an impoverished young street girl's hopes and dreams is beautifully told through dance, song and original live music. A snowy stage sets the scene for an icy cold Christmas Eve, where the Little Match Girl paces the emptying streets, shivering and desperate, trying to sell her matches. Cold, hungry and with just one final match flame to keep her warm, she sees a vision of her beloved grandmother. Leaving her troubled life behind, the Little Match Girl is guided up into the night sky by her grandmother who takes her to the moon. Now, on a clear night, if you look closely, you might see the light of a shooting star, or is it a match burning brightly?

THE SCHOOLS PROGRAMME IS A BRAND NEW DANCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME FROM DANCEEAST DESIGNED TO INSPIRE AND NURTURE HIGH QUALITY DANCE IN SCHOOLS.

GET DANCING

SCHOOLS PROGRAMME WHO’S IT FOR? The programme is designed to equip primary and secondary school teaching staff responsible for the delivery of dance with ideas, resources, advice and tools with which to develop their current provision.

WHAT HAPPENS? If you sign up to the programme you will be paired with one of DanceEast’s most accomplished dance artists and invited to choose from three packages of support, each of which equates to blocks of your artist’s time. You can then use this time in a variety of ways to help develop and inspire your dance provision. The emphasis of the programme is to support and assist the teacher responsible for the delivery of dance within the school, using approaches such as team teaching, observation and jointly devising tools and techniques to best inspire your students.

WHAT DO I GET … EXACTLY? Following your expression of interest, a consultation with a member of the DanceEast Creative Team will follow, where your artist will be introduced to you. At this meeting you will have an opportunity to discuss your immediate and long term aspirations for dance development within the school as well as the challenges you currently face. In response to this and with the school’s availability and budget in mind, we will propose a plan tailored to your individual needs. There are three packages to choose from, designed to fit in with varying budgets and needs. You will be invited to customise the plan in consultation with your artist, from a menu of additional complementary activities.

PLAN 1 £505

-- Consultation & Action Plan -- 3 x artist sessions -- Performance opportunity -- DanceHouse Day

Ideal for schools wanting a quick creative injection of new ideas. It is recommended that the programme be delivered over a maximum of a term. The emphasis will be placed on providing the teacher with a range of creative tools and approaches for immediate action.

PLAN 2 £850

-- Consultation & Action Plan -- 6 x artist sessions -- Performance opportunity -- DanceHouse Day -- Priority Booking for events

Ideal for schools wanting to focus on a particular area and build on existing provision, it is recommended that the programme be delivered over two or three terms. Emphasis will be placed on building the confidence of both students and teachers, capitalising on the existing provision and extending knowledge to raise the quality of the dance offer.

PLAN 3

-------

£1540

Consultation & Action Plan 12 x artist sessions Performance opportunity DanceHouse Day Priority Booking for events Work Experience Placement

Ideal for schools wanting to add value and professionalise their dance provision. It is recommended that this intervention be spread over the course of an academic year for maximum benefit. Emphasis will be placed on embedding dance at the heart of an exciting annual cultural programme.
