WELCOME Welcome to another Spring season here at DanceEast.

2018 is the start of a series of important celebrations for DanceEast. This year is the 10th anniversary of our CAT scheme, and it is hard to believe that it is my fifth year as Artistic Director. It is 40 years since Ipswich Town won the world cup also, and we will be working with colleagues at the New Wolsey Theatre to mark this very special moment in Ipswich’s story. As I write this we are furiously planning for our 10th anniversary in the Jerwood DanceHouse in 2019. It’s hard to believe that we opened our doors to the public in Autumn 2009, but more about that next year.

Brendan Keaney Artistic Director & Chief Executive

Meanwhile there is a lot to do, not least getting to see the wonderful performances that we have lined up. We use Spring as the moment to introduce our audiences to new work; this year, however, we are also presenting a significant number of familiar names to regular DanceEast audiences. A season would not be a season without at least one premiere, and in February it is in the shape of Didy Veldman’s The Knot. In addition, Spring would not be Spring without something entirely new: we will be hosting the first visit of Stopgap Dance Company. The UK leads the way in integrating disabled and non-disabled people through dance, and Stopgap is at the forefront of this work. Ensure you don’t miss it. If you saw Mark Bruce’s productions of Dracula or The Odyssey, you won’t need to be encouraged to buy tickets for Macbeth. If you have not seen the company before, don’t miss it – it brings a truly amazing combination of high production standards, awesome dancing and great storytelling. Unfortunately, there is far too much happening to talk about it all here, but it would be remiss of me not to mention the season’s opening performance by DanceEast’s resident company, Tilted, and the announcement that PhotoEast will be back animating the Ipswich waterfront in May. While you are enjoying all this great work, behind the scenes we will be preparing for U.Dance, the national festival of youth dance which we will be hosting in the summer. If you want a U.Dance taster, head to University of Bedfordshire for the regional platform where we will decide who will represent the East of England at the national event. Watch this space, it is going to be a very special year. Brendan

CONSTRUCTIONS OF THIN AIR One moment intimately moving, another poignantly absurd, Constructions

From £12, £9 concessions of Thin Air exposes the nature of our desire and refusal to belong. Suitable for all ages JERWOOD DANCEHOUSE CONTEMPORARY PHYSICAL THEATRE Workshop on page 23 Post-show talk

Nine performers merge contemporary dance, physical theatre and everyday objects to transform the stage into shifting architectural landscapes. Constructions of Thin Air unfolds in two acts: the first asks questions about the notion of belonging to systems, whether political, economic, or social; the second provokes thoughts on the notion of home, family and identity. Tilted Productions creates playful and challenging cross-art form collaborations that reimagine the familiar and open up fresh, poetic perspectives on the world we live in. Created by Tilted’s Artistic Director Maresa von Stockert in collaboration with an intergenerational cast, this new work for the stage evolved from the company’s acclaimed outdoor promenade piece BELONGING(s). Funded by Arts Council England and Ipswich Borough Council. The creation process was supported by 101 – Outdoor Arts Creation Space, Newbury, and DanceEast, Ipswich.

DIDY VELDM UMANOOVE AN’S THE KNOT

Following The Happiness Project, which launched her company at DanceEast in 2016, Dutch-born Didy Veldman’s new production is The Knot, an examination of the social and personal significance of marriage in contemporary Western society. The Umanoove dancers interpret this theme through a supremely physical and theatrical dance language, looking at what a wedding means, how it feels, the role of ritual, doubt, religion, gender and Walt Disney. With music from Stravinsky and Ben Foskett, The Knot will create the atmosphere of a large wedding party in which the performers are the bride, groom, best man and bridesmaids, and the audience are the guests.

BEAUTIFUL

From £12, £9 concessions Following a sell-out performance in 2016, Sally Marie’s company Sweetshop Age suitability 16+ years Revolution returns to the Jerwood Dancehouse with a brand new piece of (contains sexual content) dance theatre. JERWOOD DANCEHOUSE DANCE THEATRE International Women’s Day accompanying talk on Thursday 8 March – see page 24

BeautifuL encompasses movement and text, exploring love and sexuality from the point of view of women; what is fantasised about, desired and permissible within the complex web of social structures, expectations and cultural history. Extraordinary dancers will lead us through their own experience of sexuality and love, and this is contrasted with an exploration of the history of women’s sexuality over the last three hundred years. This piece, along with looking at gender, will also be celebrating the solidarity of woman, taking femininity to a more truthful place, past the gloss of media spin and pressure to conform. BeautifuL is a doorway into a dialogue about how women and men are experiencing relationships, sexuality and the body right now. And at the heart of it lies a question: how do we love and how has it changed?

DAUGHTER, DAUGHTER – BEFORE I MET YOU

JERWOOD DANCEHOUSE

She is a shadow, she is a mirror.

Friday 4 May | 7.30pm

CONTEMPORARY HIP HOP

Daughter, Daughter peers through the keyhole into the pervasive experience of fatherhood. A split moment and the world is unrecognisable. Without warning, everything takes a new meaning. The depth of responsibility, love, guilt and lack of control. The anxiety and the pride. A feeling of being reborn and wondering – how did I live before? Inspired by real stories from men and their daughters, this show is a highly physical and emotive new dance show about fatherhood. Joseph Toonga shines a stark and honest light on this profound experience through his abstract and signature hip hop and contemporary style. In 2015, Joseph Toonga was the first recipient of DanceEast’s Choreographic Development Fund, enabling his continued artistic development. Joseph was commissioned to make To Be Felt, a spectacular celebration of live cello and dance which was performed at Orford Church in 2016, and as part of the Roman River Music Festival in 2017. DanceEast is proud to continue this relationship as commissioning partner of Daughter, Daughter – Before I Met You.

U.DANCE 20 18 The nation’s annual youth dance festival will be hosted by DanceEast for the first time this year. Each year U.Dance showcases a selection of dance groups from all over the country in a range of performances, as well as providing young people with the chance to take part in workshops and masterclasses with dance industry professionals, and inspire each other with a love of dance. The 2018 event will run from 10 – 14 July in the East of England. Working in partnership with One Dance UK, DanceEast is excited to welcome the prestigious event, and continue to champion youth dance in all its forms. DanceEast has played host to regional U.Dance heats since 2012 as the East of England partner organisation, with each heat culminating in one national U.Dance event each year. In true U.Dance tradition, the 2018 event will further extend DanceEast’s offering of dance opportunities. It will showcase the strength and talent of young dancers from across the country, and enable hundreds of young dancers to participate in classes, workshops, careers sessions and social activities during the three and half day residential. Additional specialised projects are also hoped to increase the dance opportunities for children and young people in the region for 2018, expanding the reach of U.Dance to young people in Suffolk and across the region. ABOUT DANCEEAST

TOWN DAN WITH UNIT CES Look out for Town Dances in Hadleigh and Stowmarket, a project commissioned by DanceEast and funded by Babergh & Mid Suffolk District Council. The project will bring together over 120 performers from schools and community groups to create two film portraits, one for each town in Spring 2018. The project is led by UNIT, a collaboration between choreographer Tom Hobden and film director Kate Flurrie. UNIT will work with local schools, community groups and individuals in each town, encouraging storytelling and the sharing of key life moments that tie people to the town in which they live. These views and memories will be used as the starting point for the creation of dance movement, filmed on location in homes, community centres and sites of local interest involving the community, and supported by professional dancers. At its culmination, the project will have built a filmed portrait of each town, to be screened in a local venue in 2018 and available online. Captured on film, footage from the Dance Map will be turned into permanent and online exhibition material, producing a lasting record of the project which will complement the existing collections and exhibitions at Lowestoft museums. Lowestoft Dance Map is part of Making Waves Together, a wider partnership project led jointly by Great Yarmouth Borough Council and Waveney District Council, and funded by the national Great Places Scheme. This is seeing communities and organisations in both areas work together to boost the cultural offer, and drive cultural reimagination as a way of supporting success in the seaside towns.
