WELCOME There are lots of very special events for people of all ages this summer. However, it would be remiss not to draw your attention to the very special focus of this summer on young people. Earlier this year youth dance groups from across the East of England came together for the regional U.Dance platform, an opportunity to highlight some of the promising talent throughout the region. This July they will be joined by young people from across England as the U.Dance National Festival is coming to the Jerwood DanceHouse. We are particularly honoured to be hosting this event as it is the first time it will be held in the East of England.

Brendan Keaney Artistic Director & Chief Executive

To start the celebration of young people dancing we will be welcoming back to Ipswich the National Youth Dance Company. If you have seen the company before you won’t need to be told to book your tickets early. If you haven’t seen them, prepare to be inspired and get your tickets now as this show will sell out. 2018 is also the tenth anniversary for DanceEast’s Centre for Advanced Training programme. This year the students have worked with the Jasmin Vardimon Company to create a new work and we couldn’t be prouder of their hard work and ambition. It’s not all just about young people, I am particularly excited to announce that two of our newly appointed Associate Artists are presenting work in our Summer programme, Joseph Toonga and Tim Casson. Our third Associate Artist is Julie Cunningham and we welcome our first Junior Associate, Kaia Goodenough. All of them are truly brilliant artists and we can’t wait to work with them - you can read the full announcement on pages 3 & 4. Lastly, I would like to say thank you for your continued support, without which, none of this would be possible! Brendan

ASSOCIATE ARTISTS 2018-2020 KAIA GOODENOUGH Kaia Goodenough has been appointed as our first Junior Associate Artist. Kaia trained with DanceEast CAT before going on to further her training at London Studio Centre, graduating in 2016 with Intoto Dance Company. Since graduating she has been working as a freelance choreographer and rehearsal director, creating her first work ‘Abstract Romanticism’ which premiered at The Place Resolution 2017. Since then her work has gone on to be performed at Battersea Arts Centre and The Point, Eastleigh, as well as being commissioned for various film projects. Most recently Kaia has been collaborating with poets, and writing herself, creating work fuelled by feminist theories in 21st century living, aiming to open a conversation and address these themes with light humour for men and women.

“I am really looking forward to working with DanceEast as having such a supportive team is a blessing and so rare in these early stages of my career, enabling me to explore my work much deeper whilst being surrounded by all the experience of the other Associate Artists.”

TIM CASSON Described as a “choreographic provocateur” and “the friendliest man in dance” Tim Casson is a record breaking dance artist making collaborative work that is accessible, interactive and joyful. Working with a range of collaborators from computer programmers to members of the public, he creates work for theatre as well as unusual and online spaces, on a mission to bring the joy of dance into the everyday. Tim has a longstanding relationship with us, having already worked on numerous projects including an international collaboration in Quebec, Canada and choreographing for students on the DanceEast Centre for Advanced Training. “I’m thrilled to be joining the DanceEast family as a new Associate Artist and working together to bring dance to even more people in innovative and exciting new ways! Having seen and engaged with the work that DanceEast does locally, nationally and internationally, I’m really looking forward to this new stage of our relationship, and to growing as an artist through the support of this wonderfully encouraging organisation!”

We are excited to announce new Associate Artist partnerships with Kaia Goodenough, Tim Casson, Julie Cunningham and Joseph Toonga. Working with a range of artists and companies from across the UK and international partners, the Associate Artist scheme is the top-level strand of support for dance artists that we offer at DanceEast. The collaborative relationships run over a two-year period and we will support three Associate Artists and for the first time a Junior Associate, an artist in the earlier stages of their career.

JULIE CUNNINGHAM Julie Cunningham has worked professionally as a dance artist for fifteen years, performing both nationally and internationally. After training at the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance in London, Julie has worked with Ballett der Stadt Theater Koblenz, Germany, Michael Clark Company and spent many years in the USA working with groundbreaking choreographer Merce Cunningham (no relation). In 2014, she was awarded ‘Outstanding Modern Performance’ at the Critics Circle National Dance Awards for New Work with Michael Clark Company and was the inaugural Leverhulme Choreography Fellow at Rambert. In 2018 Julie became a New Wave Associate of Sadler’s Wells. Julie Cunningham & Company was launched in 2017 and became an associate company of Rambert in 2018.

JOSEPH TOONGA Joseph creates unique physical choreography that incorporates narrative. He is fascinated by the rawness and precision of hip hop and how this can be fused with the shape and structure of contemporary choreography. Joseph also leads ‘Just Us Dance Theatre’, and is Director of Artists4Artists, a support network for hip hop artists. Our relationship with Joseph has grown and developed over the last three years; Joseph was a recipient of the Choreographic Development Fund in 2015. In 2016 we commissioned Joseph to make ‘To Be Felt’ a piece with a live cellist, specially created for a church setting. DanceEast are also extremely proud to have commissioned and present Daughter, Daughter, Joseph’s first full-length work at the Jerwood DanceHouse in May. “I’m very pleased and excited to have been given the chance to be part of the associateship with DanceEast for the next two years. I feel the scheme is an exciting opportunity to be nurtured and challenged by the team and will offer me a chance to really develop my choreographic voice and help build a solid foundation for the next step in my career, whilst sharing and connecting with the wider community of East Anglia” Photo: Chris Nash

JOSEPH TOONGA

From £12, £9 concessions She is a shadow, she is a mirror. JERWOOD DANCEHOUSE CONTEMPORARY HIP HOP See workshop info on page 20 Commissioned by DanceEast.

This performance reaches into the most raw emotions of becoming a parent. Joseph Toonga uses an unusual and impressive blend of hip hop and contemporary dance styles to share with you his transition from life before and after his daughter was born. Whether you have experienced the highs and lows of parenthood or not you will leave this performance moved, questioning if you are the best version of yourself. Prior to the performance of Daughter, Daughter, Joseph Toonga and Ricardo Da Silva will perform a short duet titled ‘It’s Between Us’. Choreographed by Joseph Toonga and Dickson Mbi, this work is about a journey of struggle and two friends finding supporting in one another. We are particularly proud to be presenting Joseph Toonga’s work as our relationship with him as a choreographer and artist continues to grow. He is now a DanceEast Associate Artist 2018, which foretells many collaborations to come.

Andante is an invitation to pause, to connect with your senses, to be in a room with others and not have to say or even see anything. “My daughter found that dancing wasn’t her career, but the time she spent at DanceEast was magical – they are a fantastic bunch of teachers that give you that choice, thank you for everything that you taught my daughter.”

CELEBRATING TEN YEARS OF DANCEEAST’S CENTRE FOR ADVANCED TRAINING 2018 marks ten years since the Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) began at DanceEast – that’s 247 students we’ve had the privilege to see develop into great artists and thinkers. It’s 190 guest artists that we’ve had the pleasure of working with including Joseph Toonga, Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures and Tamsin Fitzgerald, to name only a few. And it’s over 6,000 young people that we’ve had the chance to meet through workshops, who inspire us with their ambition. Every year is special and we are honoured to work with such talented and driven young individuals, seeing them grow from their experiences at DanceEast and progress to the next stage of their lives. Wherever their careers and interests might take them, we hope they hold on to their love of dance and remember that it can be part of their everyday. Our CAT achievements wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our participants’ families, the CAT faculty and the inspiring dance tutors who all work together to encourage and guide these young artists. We would like to extend an enormous thank you to everyone who has been involved in making DanceEast CAT a success for ten years, and we look forward to sharing many more with you all.

SUMMER ACTIVITIES

BABY LOVES TO BOOGIE

Every year Ipswich comes together for a weekend of fun with the Ipswich Maritime Festival. Being part of the Waterfront, this is something that we love to get involved in – celebrating our community and the beautiful town we are part of. This year the festival hosts a ‘pirate and sailor’ theme and we’ll be bringing lots of dance activity, so keep a look out for playful shenanigans along the Waterfront and in the courtyard. Don’t forget the fun continues Sunday morning with our traditional Baby Loves to Boogie event, where you will dance away your morning with us in an exciting disco (at a baby friendly volume, of course). As well as the disco, there will be pirate arts and craft activities, face-painting and much more… Ahoy me hearties!

Age suitability: Under 5 years and their families Price: £4 Adult, £3 Child, £12 Family Ticket (2 Adults & 2 Children or 1 Adult & 3 Children)
