WELCOME It has been an incredibly exciting year for me as I settle into my role at DanceEast. Just a few short months after I started in post, the first, full cohort of young people graduating from the DanceEast Centre for Advanced Training left to begin their full time training or study in dance. This marks an important milestone for this organisation and our Centre for Advanced Training. The challenge for DanceEast will be to further develop its entire artistic offer to ensure that, when many of them finish their courses in three years, they will be tempted to come back to Ipswich to become part of the expanding dance community here. In the meantime we will be working hard to ensure that we improve the range and quality of the experiences that we provide to the new and existing Centre for Advanced Training students. We will be examining how we might develop both our performance programme and our Associate Artists scheme so that Centre for Advanced Training students have improved access to these important resources. The Jerwood DanceHouse boasts some of the very best dance facilities in the country and we regularly host the finest national and international dance artists; there are extraordinary opportunities on offer here at DanceEast, but there are always ways of improving upon these and making them even better and accessible to all. NATIONAL DANCE CATS National Dance Centres for Advanced Training (CATs) identify children with exceptional potential in dance and develop their talent through pioneering programmes, creating and inspiring future generations of world class dancers and choreographers. Through the national provision of highly specialised training for young people, artists are cultivated at a critical stage in their development in order to prepare them for entry into the world’s leading vocational dance schools and on to successful and rewarding careers in the arts. National Dance CATs are supported through the Department for Education’s Music and Dance Scheme, and operate from host organisations recognised for their excellence and commitment to the arts and vocational training. Successful applicants are able to access highly specialist dance training in their locality whilst continuing to live at home and benefiting from a broad and balanced education. National Dance CATs deliver accessible, non-residential, professional training programmes for young people aged 10 – 18 years. Centres are pioneers in prevocational training and research, promoting best practice and providing exceptional and innovative tuition to young people, regardless of their personal circumstances. The Centres maintain close links with influential dance companies and artists, creating opportunities for children to work with and build relations with future employers, and to gain an inspiring yet realistic insight into the profession. The DanceEast Centre for Advanced Training is one of nine National Dance CATs aimed at young people aged 10 – 18 with exceptional potential in dance, funded by the Department for Education (DfE). As it is the most intensive and committed of DanceEast’s youth activities, training is suited to those who have aspirations to pursue a career as a dance professional, or at least are ready to make a commitment to intensive training. The scheme is devised to prepare young dancers for full-time professional dance training or university, and includes tuition in five core areas:
• Technique • Creative and choreography • Performance • Health education (including injury prevention, nutrition, floor barre) • Enrichment activities (including theatre trips) and workshops in a range of styles
This combination of classes is intended to give students a strong basic grounding in technique and creativity, to enable them to apply to a range of vocational schools with a broad set of skills.

THE DANCEEAST CENTRE FOR ADVANCED TRAINING
IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU? New applications are accepted from young people age 10 – 16 from the East of England. Applicants must be enthusiastic and motivated, with exceptional potential in dance. Means tested grants are available to cover training, transport and dancewear costs. No previous formal dance training is required, although experienced dancers are also encouraged to apply. Students are levelled according to age, ability and previous experience.
PROGRESSION The scheme equips students with the skills necessary to go on to further professional vocational dance training or university if they choose, usually at either age 16 or 18. Most dance colleges and conservatoires offer degree and other Further or Higher Education courses alongside the practical training. Careers guidance and advice is on offer throughout the course. DanceEast Centre for Advanced Training students have gone on to full time training at: Arts Educational School, BRIT School, Central School of Ballet, London Contemporary Dance School, London Studio Centre, Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance, Royal Ballet School, Tring Park Performing Arts and the University of West London.
CLASS LOCATIONS Classes take place at the Jerwood DanceHouse, Ipswich on Sundays during term time (Saturday for Introductory Level), with mid-week classes in Ipswich, Norwich or Cambridge. All students also take part in intensive weekend, Easter and summer holiday workshops. In certain circumstances it is possible to tailor a more individual programme for those who may have difficulty travelling to one of the Centre for Advanced Training classes during the week. All students receive an Individual Training Plan (ITP) to aid their development and highlight personal goals and needs. The scheme is delivered outside school time and every effort is made to encourage students to keep a healthy balance between academic work and dance training.

Q. DOES IT MATTER IF I HAVEN’T HAD A LOT OF EXPERIENCE IN DANCE? A. It is not necessary to have had lots of previous dance training, although some dance experience is preferable. You need to demonstrate potential, dedication and enthusiasm.

Q. WILL IT AFFECT MY SCHOOL WORK? A. The Centre for Advanced Training is designed to fit around school work and in the first year you will only need to attend classes twice a week.

Q. WHAT ABOUT OTHER DANCE CLASSES I ALREADY ATTEND? A. It is important that students continue with a range of other activities. You will however need to be able to commit to attend all classes on the scheme.
Q. I LIKE DANCING, BUT I AM NOT SURE WHETHER I’D LIKE TO PURSUE IT AS A CAREER: SHOULD I STILL APPLY? A. If you don’t think you could commit the time and effort it takes this probably isn’t the right course for you, but don’t stop dancing, this is just one of many pathways into a career in dance. Q. WHAT WILL I HAVE TO DO AT THE AUDITION? A. The first audition consists of practical dance sessions containing creative work, contemporary and simple ballet technique. Applicants are placed in a class with people of a similar age and level of experience. At the second stage of auditions applicants have a short interview with a member of the panel (parents/ guardians/carers are asked to join them).
Q. WHAT IS COVERED BY THE COST OF THE COURSE? A. The cost of the course includes provision at the Centre for Advanced Training, mid-week training according
to the Individual Training Plan, uniform, theatre trips, medical support, performance opportunities and costumes. In addition students receive ongoing advice and career guidance, and may be offered the opportunity to take part in projects with the National Dance CATs.
Q. DOES THE COURSE ONLY LAST FOR A YEAR? A. Students are assessed continually throughout their time on the course and are supported right through to the time that they go on to further vocational training at age 16 – 18. If the Centre for Advanced Training team feels that the course is no longer right for a student, they are positively supported off the
course and encouraged to continue with other dance activities.
Q. WHO TEACHES FOR YOU? A. The teaching team is made up of teachers and accompanying musicians of the highest calibre as the quality of teaching is paramount to the success of the scheme. In addition to regular workshops, guest teachers will deliver extra sessions, making the training delivered relevant to today’s dance profession. COSTS & FUNDING
“Early training is so vital for dancers, but as a parent it is not always easy to know what the best way forward is for your child. Becoming part of the DanceEast Centre for Advanced Training means that the training is mapped out in the right way for each student and this, together with all the support they receive, enables them to be free to concentrate on their dancing.” Parent

Parental contributions can be paid in three termly instalments, or over nine months by monthly standing order.
TRAVEL AND DANCEWEAR Students may apply for financial assistance with travel and dancewear costs. Applications can be made on a yearly basis, and assistance is means tested on the same scale as the grant funding, e.g. families who are entitled to a full grant are also entitled to full reimbursement for dancewear and travel costs; families who are entitled to 50% grant are entitled to claim 50% of these costs. “The fact that we are currently able to get a full grant is wonderful. It means that my daughter can have the best possible training without having to worry about the fees. Without the Music and Dance Scheme grant she would not be able to attend the DanceEast Centre for Advanced Training or access this level of training.” Parent

FIND OUT MORE OPEN DAY Sunday 27 April – Jerwood DanceHouse, Ipswich The Open Day will give prospective students and their parents the opportunity to see the DanceEast Centre for Advanced Training in action. You will be able to watch classes as they take place, speak to members of staff and current students, and have a tour of the facilities on offer at the Jerwood DanceHouse, Ipswich. Participants will also take part in a contemporary and creative workshop led by the teaching team.

AUDITIONS Entry to the scheme is through a two stage audition process. Everyone who applies is invited to a Stage One audition (lasting one day) where they will take part in practical dance sessions. Selected applicants will then have the opportunity to return for a Stage Two audition and interview, and places will be offered by the end of July 2014. THE BIGGER PICTURE
The Department for Education’s Music and Dance Scheme currently enables around 2,000 exceptionally talented children to have access to the best specialist music and dance training available alongside a good academic education. The scheme provides funding for children to attend residential schools in music and dance, choir schools or Centres for Advanced Training (CATs). The residential dance schools participating in the Music and Dance Scheme are The Royal Ballet School, Tring Park, Elmhurst School for Dance and the Hammond School.

ABOUT DANCEEAST DANCEEAST IS ONE OF THE NATION’S LEADING DANCE ORGANISATIONS. DanceEast brings world-class dance to the East of England, presenting an eclectic programme of performances, widening the experience of audiences and bringing a new and invigorated audience to dance. DanceEast coordinates a range of youth dance companies in Suffolk, bringing young dancers, professional choreographers and expert tuition, as well as opportunities to perform at national and regional platforms. DanceEast brings out the potential of young dancers and gives them a chance to develop their talent. Working with schools, DanceEast offers a variety of curriculum-time or after school activities, developing the extended schools agenda and providing excellent resources to develop the teaching of dance as part of the National Curriculum. DanceEast supports dance education within the school environment, widening the opportunities for dance experience to all young people. The Jerwood DanceHouse, Ipswich is one of a growing number of centres for dance globally that have been created to reach out to communities and act as magnets for national and international dance artists. This £8.9m development on the Ipswich waterfront is the cultural hub of the regenerated dockside and a hothouse for the development and presentation of new and emerging dance talent. The DanceHouse has three dance studios, a 200-seat studio theatre, Pilates and treatment rooms, a shop and the danceeats! café.
