WELCOME The only challenge in having a great autumn programme, and we really did have a spectacular season, is that you have to follow it with an even better one in 2016. I am delighted to report that I think you will have a happy new year, as we have some seriously great shows coming up!

Some of you will recall that in 2014 Mark Bruce Company’s Dracula sold out in record time; and the company are back with another classic, The Odyssey. If you saw Dracula you will not need persuading to book for the new show, if you didn’t and you want to see outstanding dancing and great production values, book now, as you will not be disappointed. Another of the big hits in 2014 was Avant Garde’s Black Album. They are also coming back to Ipswich and we will be hosting the world premiere of their new show Fagin’s Twist, an innovative hip hop take on Dickens famous tale. I am also delighted to welcome both Northern Ballet and Ballet Black to the Jerwood DanceHouse for the first time; both of these companies sell out much larger venues and the chance to see them up close in our intimate studio theatre will be a real treat. Spring is the season of new work and it is the time when we try to introduce new companies and some cutting edge work. So we are also bringing back DanceEast’s One Night Stand programme, bigger and better than before; not only can you enjoy a half price drink in our bar after the show and feedback your thoughts on the work, this season we are introducing a fantastic loyalty discount which means the more performances you book for, the more you save (see page 33 for more details). We really want to hear what you think and I will be there with colleagues to listen to your thoughts. One of my personal highlights and a must-see is Flora Wellesley Wesley’s new company Nora. Flora has a long relationship with DanceEast, since being a member of Splinters and Ballet Scholars. It is no small achievement to be commissioned by both DanceEast and Sadler’s Wells on a maiden voyage and Flora and her Co-Artistic Director Eleanor Sirkoski have done just that. This work has really got London dance audiences excited so if you fancy something different, and it is different, do give it a try. If you are interested by Nora you should also make sure you don’t miss Igor and Moreno. They were presented at the DanceHouse as part of Pulse in 2015 and are causing a great deal of excitement on the national and international scene; they are currently part of The Place’s ‘Work Place programme’ and have just been nominated for a Critics’ Circle national dance award for Outstanding Male Performance (modern). These are artists working at the cutting edge of choreography, dare to be different and give it a try. Finally, do remember that DanceEast is much more than just the shows in the theatre. We have a great programme of classes and an extraordinary offer with The Centre for Advanced Training (CAT), for gifted and talented young people across the east of England. Recruitment for the CAT programme starts in earnest in the spring so if you are or you know a young person that is considering a career in dance do look at our website to find out more.

I loved you and I loved you is the extraordinary true story of young Welsh composer Morfydd Owen, who died almost 100 years ago in mysterious circumstances at the age of just 26. Co-commissioned and co-produced by South East Dance. Supported by Arts Council England through National Lottery Funding, The Nightingale, Greenwich Dance & Trinity Laban Partnership, Dance4, Roehampton University, Leeds Beckett University, Institut français du RoyaumeUni and Chisenhale Dance Space.

Please note: One of the pieces

NORA Nora is the coming together of dancers Eleanor Sikorski and Flora Wellesley Wesley. Their desire to dance together, their love of choreographic structures and their critical eye has given them the impetus to invite several distinguished dance makers to create work especially for them. In this, their first collaborative endeavour, they perform an evening of new works by the indomitable Liz Aggiss, acclaimed duo Jonathan Burrows and Matteo Fargion, and renowned French choreographer Simon Tanguy. Liz Aggiss has conceived BLOODY NORA!, a story of competitiveness and hormonal imbalance where cheap tricks are cracking laughs, and a Bach is worse than its bite. Jonathan Burrows and Matteo Fargion's piece, entitled Eleanor And Flora Music, is a brand new translation of composer Morton Feldman's For John Cage, the source of their iconic Both Sitting Duet (2002). This new piece reimagines the earlier work as a standing performance, building silent music from a gestural landscape of touch. Simon Tanguy has worked with Nora to develop Digging, a complex score of movement and text, creating a unique and intricate portrait of the two women and the political world they live in.

IGOR AND MORENO Following a thrilling performance at the Jerwood DanceHouse during PULSE Festival in June 2015, DanceEast is very excited to welcome back this talented duo with their new show. There are two people in this dance performance, but it is not just about them. It is about all of us. It is about the secret lives we all possess when we are close to others. It is about those moments – between coffee and dancing – when harmony abandons us and all we have left is the desire to scream. It is a performance and place to imagine how things might be other than the way they are. It is a simple room for all our tomorrows.

MARK BRUCE COMPANY

AVANT GARDE DANCE

Homer’s epic poem is retold in an extraordinary dance theatre production.

DanceEast is thrilled to present the world premiere of Fagin’s Twist. After performing to a sell-out audience of The Black Album in Spring 2014, DanceEast’s relationship with the company has grown from strength to strength.

The King, Odysseus (Christopher Tandy) separated from his family for ten years of brutal war, faces another ten year struggle to return home as a reckless God (Jonathan Goddard) drags him on an epic journey across oceans to strange lands and the darkness beyond. Immortal beauties, shape shifters, monsters and sorcerers both guide and torment the king as he hurtles towards a savage and desperate reunion with his Queen. The cast and creative team that brought you the multi-award winning Dracula present a vision of a broken world, from faded New York pageants to islands of fantasy; brutal seas, battlefields and a gateway to Hades. Set to music ranging from Mozart to Mark Lanegan; Sacred Arias to The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and an originally composed score; this Odyssey is of now – contemporary horror and fantasy splintering from ancient myth; the themes universal: how we face our mortality and the driving force of the Gods inside us.

DANCEEAST.CO.UK 01473 295230

Fagin’s Twist is the untold story of a notorious, complex and perhaps misunderstood villain. It imagines the story of Fagin's youth, corrupted by greed and worn down by poverty. The streets are a place of little comfort and no easy redemption, and there is no fairy tale ending. See Dicken’s Oliver Twist in a shadowy new light. Tony Adigun’s Avant Garde Dance flip your expectations of five familiar characters with their unmatched contemporary hip hop style.

DIGITOPIA INSPIRED CREATIVE DANCE WORKSHOP

Photo: Tom Dale

Young dancers are prone to developing inefficient movement patterns through the over-recruitment of muscle fibres. Often we see our dancers relying on their global strength, rather than finding the synergy between the core musculature and the global muscle systems. In particular this seminar shines a light on optimising efficient leg and hip mechanics through practices employed at the DanceEast Centre for Advanced Training. Led by physiotherapist Rachel Canavan and dance scientist Elsa Urmston, this practical and discursive session is aimed at private dance school teachers and mainstream dance educators. Together we will explore lower limb strength and conditioning for performance enhancement and rehabilitation from injury.
