WELCOME I enjoy the dark winter evenings as it is a great time to plan and think about what will be happening at the DanceHouse in spring – the season of birth, of renewal. Spring is all about the new, so it is the right time of year to introduce fresh artists and new work to the DanceHouse. DanceEast’s One Night Stand programme of work is making a comeback and true to its nature will bring the best new work by the best new dance companies for one night only. With all One Night Stand performances you will get the chance to chat to me and my colleagues after the show, feed back your thoughts on what you have just seen, and enjoy a half price drink in the DanceEast bar.

This season we will be presenting a range of work from, and by, young people and the local community. DanceEast brings dance to people in schools, hospitals, hospices and we are determined to showcase this work … it is important to remember that Dance is for everyone. One of the most exciting projects this spring is the Move | Be Moved Festival. This week-long dance festival is a community takeover and will include shows suitable for families, taster sessions, schools and youth performances and much more. See page 20 for further information and to find out how to get involved. Another exciting thing that has been taking place behind the scenes here at DanceEast is the development of our new website. We are particularly pleased with the new look print which we introduced in 2013, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. However we were also made aware that some people considered our old website to be a bit tired and hard to navigate. We hope that we have managed to change all that, and, if you are booking a show or trying to find a dance class online, it should now be a lot easier! Now that it is up and running we'd love to have your feedback. You may notice that we have made slight changes to the pricing structure of our performances and participatory events. I’m sure you will agree that the tickets are still great value and the new pricing structure will have a significant impact on the way we can operate, and it has allowed us to expand the programme of work we present.

U.Dance East celebrates and showcases excellence in youth dance from across the East of England. This regional event marks an opportunity for performance groups to come together in a series of selected workshops before performing new, devised works in an exciting mixed bill.

This full day of activities is part of U.Dance, the UK’s biggest platform for youth dance. A nationwide programme led by Youth Dance England, U.Dance brings together and supports those who organise youth dance performances, whilst raising awareness of events across the wider dance sector and beyond.

Murmur & Inked is a double bill from Aakash Odedra Company. Artistic Director Odedra is one of the most sought-after British choreographer/dancers today. Originally trained in the South Asian styles of khatak and bharatanatyam, Odedra has developed a distinctive movement style following intensive training with some of the most prestigious choreographers in the world. Diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age, Odedra found conventional education at school very challenging. He felt defined by his learning difficulties, but not his abilities. As written language was so alien, dance became his preferred mode of expression. In Murmur, Odedra and Australian choreographer Lewis Major delve into the idea of warped and exaggerated realities. In a major collaboration with Major and Ars Electronica Futurelab (Linz, Austria), the company explores how the misconceptions of dyslexia can be revealed through visual design, light, sound and movement. Scarification and tattoos have always been used as marks of identity or experience. Odedra’s grandmother’s body was covered by signs that ensured her protection and sense of belonging. In Inked, choreographed by Olivier award-winner Damien Jalet, the body becomes a place of transformation, an envelope marked, folded and metamorphosed by its journey through a ritualised space. The figures and drawings made on his own body reveal the inner duality of the dancer who enters through a series of transformative stages in a self-seeking quest, an exploration of the body's limits and powers, as a way to transcend them.

DANCEEAST & UNIT Following the success of Finding Home in 2014, DanceEast presents The Village, another large scale community dance performance project, at the Jerwood DanceHouse, Ipswich and the Apex, Bury St Edmunds. This year DanceEast is delighted to be joined by newly formed company Unit made up of DanceEast Associate Artists Tom Hobden and Kate Flurrie. The Village is inspired by the hundreds of little villages across England. The audience will zoom in and out of local characters’ lives to reveal a web of community spirit. The cast includes up to 200 performers from local schools in the Babergh, Mid Suffolk and Forest Heath districts, DanceEast Performance Groups; Suffolk Junior Dance Company and Spin Off as well as community participants. This exciting new cast will include participants who have never danced before alongside aspiring new talents of the future. Unit will work alongside DanceEast Core Tutors Caroline Mummery and Lynnette King. You can expect striking cinematics, emotional narratives and a performance that will bring the extraordinary out of a community. WILKIE BRANSON & SALLY COOKSON Varmints tells the poignant tale of one small creature’s struggle to preserve a world in danger of being lost forever. Following a successful 2013 tour, Varmints returns with a specially added interactive post-show discussion in which the audience can meet the cast and discover more about the show. This exhilarating dance-theatre show is choreographed by B-boy and Sadler’s Wells New Wave Associate Wilkie Branson and directed by children’s theatre specialist Sally Cookson. For his stark and poetic duet Chalk, Clinkard draws inspiration from the iconic cliffs of his hometown. He is joined on stage by composer James Keane who provides a live score. Of Land And Tongue is a dance of odd sensations and unnameable experiences performed by an exceptional cast. An accumulation of untranslatable words from foreign cultures, are brought to life to compelling, and occasionally hilarious effect. Seen from a British perspective, The Spalding Suite gets to the heart and soul of the gravity-defying game and delves into the hopes and dreams of those who play it. A poetic physical dance theatre production for children aged 4+ and their families. Mr Dedalus and his son Icarus are trapped on an island. They long for home, but there’s no way to get off. Luckily Mr Dedalus is an inventor and thinks hard to come up with a plan to fly and hop away above the sea. Hop tells a story of the dream of flying, never giving up and above all, the unconditional relationship between a father and a son. Nevski Prospekt from Belgium is a new players collective founded by theatre-makers Ives Thuwis, Wim De Winne and Gregory Caers. Hop promises to be a total experience that starts the moment you enter the DanceHouse and resonates even after you have left.

Tracing pathways in space, four jugglers and four ballet dancers share a stage for the first time. 4 x 4 is a collaboration between two worlds: ballet and juggling. Both these formalised systems are ephemeral journeys through time and space, leaving an unseen trace, like an imaginary architecture. Following the international success of Smashed, the sensational Gandini Juggling is returning to its love affair with pure patterns and mathematics. Directed by world renowned juggler Sean Gandini, choreographed by Royal Ballet dancer Ludovic Ondiviela, with original composition Suspended opus 69 by Nimrod Borenstein and performed live by exceptional young chamber ensemble Camerata Alma Viva. Incredible lighting design by Guy Hoare completes this sensational cross art-form experience.

NATIONAL YOUTH DANCE COMPANY | SIDI LARBI CHERKAOUI Now in its third year, Sadler's Wells National Youth Dance Company is fast establishing a reputation for producing high quality performances from a company of dancers who are expressive, brave and energise the dance environment. Having completed two sold out UK tours, National Youth Dance Company returns to the Jerwood DanceHouse with a new work created by the 2014–15 Guest Artistic Director Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. Cherkaoui is one of the most prolific choreographers working today; a Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist, he has created more than 20 works. This new commission sees Cherkaoui revisiting moments from his established catalogue of work including: Babel(words), Puz/zle, Genesis and TeZukA, incorporating new ideas and movement material from the young dancers. Cherkaoui’s unique choreographic process, combined with the fresh talent of NYDC dancers, illustrates the power and youthful creativity young people can bring to a professional dance collaboration. The work is created in partnership with Eastman.

Resident at the Jerwood DanceHouse, the DanceEast Centre for Advanced Training is one of nine national dance centres offering part-time, nonresidential, professional dance training to young people from 10 –18 years of age with exceptional potential in dance. Funded by the Department for Education’s Music and Dance Scheme, the DanceEast Centre for Advanced Training develops students’ talent through a pioneering programme, creating and inspiring future generations of world-class dancers and choreographers.

Building upon her research with The Royal Ballet School and Elmhurst School for Dance, DanceEast Centre for Advanced Training Manager Elsa Urmston will explore the role of psychological skills training in developing rounded, autonomous and free thinking dancers.
