EMPEROR ANDRÉ

M

aastricht is an international city and has been for many years. The story of Maastricht started more than two thousand years ago, when the Romans founded a settlement here. Over the centuries, many European kingdoms and empires have fought for our strategically located city. In modern history, Europe took possession of Maastricht once again – but now, fortunately, in an extraordinarily positive way. Here, in 1992, the decision was made to create the European Union and to introduce the new currency of the euro, laid down in the world-famous Maastricht Treaty. This summer, visitors from all over Europe and far beyond will

once again be coming en masse to Maastricht. For then the emperor of waltz music and romance will take possession of our city. For thirteen evenings, the Vrijthof will once again become the most beautiful open-air concert hall in the world. Against the impressive backdrop of the Basilica of St. Servatius (Sint Servaasbasiliek) and St. John's Church (Sint Janskerk), André Rieu and his Johann Strauss Orchestra will conjure up the most enchanting of melodies. More than 100,000 visitors will enjoy the music, the atmosphere, and the positive energy. The city of Maastricht is proud of its famous son André Rieu. We are proud of his fans. We say to everyone: celebrate life with the people of Maastricht, feel the strength of European solidarity, experience the dynamism of our city... And waltz into the summer with André Rieu. Maastricht welcomes the world! Annemarie Penn-te Strake, Mayor of Maastricht 5

Birthplace of the Euro In 1991, Maastricht hosted the European summit for heads of government where the decision was made to create the single currency for European member states, with the exception of Great Britain. The euro was born. The Maastricht Treaty is well-known. This educational institution represents more than a hundred nationalities in its ranks and consistently achieves a top position on the list of ‘young’ European universities.

Market sqaure and City Hall The Markt (market square) is the beating heart of a city, with markets on Wednesday and Friday. The cityhall on the Market square is the heirloom of Maastricht. Built from 1659-1664 by the architect Pieter Post; the tower dates from 1684 and houses a carillon with 49 bells that is still played regularly. Onze Lieve Vrouweplein square and Church of Our Lady Maastricht is well-known for the good ambiance of its squares. The cozy "Onze Lieve Vrouweplein" is one of the best-known. The square is dominated by the robust medieval façade of the "Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk" (the Church of Our Lady).

Vrijthof square and St John and St Servaas During the Middle Ages, the Vrijthof square formed the church's walled forecourt. Within the enclosure, private legal rules applied. On Henric van Veldekeplein, the red tower of the Gothic St. John's Church rises above the square. Originally a Roman Catholic parish church, it was converted into a Protestant church in 1632. The church is situated directly next to the impressive St. Servatius Church, the church of the first bishop of Maastricht which holds a treasury with Servatius’ relics. Dinghuis The name ‘Dinghuis’ comes from the Dutch dingen, which means

‘to administer judgement’. Until around 1650, this building was the courthouse of Maastricht. Nowadays it houses the Maastricht Tourist Office. Lang Grachtje / City wall Take a trip back in time. Parts of the 13th century city wall are still intact and form a lovely part of Maastricht, surrounded by charming streets. Bassin A historic river harbour. Passione Italiana L’arte dell’espresso From 21 April to 28 October 2018 Who does not love a good espresso in the morning to start the day? For a moment you imagine yourself being in Italy, standing in an Italian bar, drinking this strong and intense substance before going to work. This ritual however has evolved into more than drinking one’s coffee. It has become an Italian lifestyle which is not only made of places and atmospheres, but it is also a real Italian way to design tools and accessories. Showcasing different cups, coffeepots, professional machines and cafes this exhibition intends to recount, along its historiographical path, how espresso never ceases to renew its bond with its audience, confirming itself as an Italian lifestyle recognised all over the world. MAESTROS OF SANITATION AND SAFETY When André Rieu performs in Vrijthof Square, the mood is congenial and there’s a pleasant buzz in the air. All eyes are on the Maestro and his violin. But there’s more to this annual concert series than meets the eye. In this article, we take a look at some of the work that goes on behind the scenes.

The average visitor probably doesn’t give it a second thought, but it takes a lot of effort to ensure that the Rieu concert series goes off well and that Maastricht’s city centre isn’t unduly affected. The job of seeing that everything runs smoothly is entrusted to the City of Maastricht’s Public Order & Safety Team, among others. It’s a lot of fun working during the Rieu concerts, says Alon Homblen, a member of the Team. “The mood in town is fantastic. And we’re 24

there for the whole concert, so that makes it extra special.” Fourteen members of the Team are deployed during the concerts. They start by removing illegally parked bicycles and mopeds from Vrijthof Square. They then station themselves at seven different spots around the square to manage the traffic flows. But that’s not all, says Homblen. “There are a lot of tourists in town on concert days, and because we stand out, we end up acting as unofficial tourist guides.” After the concert, their main task is to ensure the orderly departure of the crowd. “Once everyone is well and truly gone, we remove the roadblocks and then our work is more or less finished.” They then hand Vrijthof Square over to the City Management sanitation crew. They make sure that the city centre is clean and sparkling from the first light of dawn, explain Justin Bovens and Patrick Seinstra. “Sometimes there’s hardly any rubbish at all, and sometimes there’s a lot of it, for example if André Rieu shoots confetti into the air and the wind blows in the wrong direction,” Seinstra chuckles. “It’s like this: Rieu’s people clean up all the rubbish in Vrijthof Square itself, and we’re responsible

for everything outside the square.” Seinstra and Bovens don’t mind; on the contrary, they love their work. “When the concert series rolls around every year, we start by clearing the Market Square on the Friday so that it makes a good impression when the buses arrive.” They see little of the concert itself. Their biggest job starts the morning after. “We find all sorts of items,” says Bovens. “From bottles of wine to the occasional wig. And no, we’ve never come across a musical instrument,” he laughs. The Public Order & Safety Team and the City Management sanitation crew hope André Rieu will continue his concert series for a long time to come. “Absolutely. We’re ready for it!” 25

MARC RIEU theatre exhibition

F

or the ninth consecutive year, Marc Rieu (the eldest son of André and Marjorie Rieu) will exhibit his latest paintings at Theater aan het Vrijthof. The exhibition is open from 12:00 noon to 5:00 PM, with free admission on 4-8, 12-15 and 19-22 July.

Marc's love of art began in 1990, after watching a documentary about Vincent van Gogh on the 100th anniversary of his death. After secondary school, Marc studied art history and archaeology in Nijmegen, where he obtained his degree in 2006. After organizing several courses on his area of expertise (the German Romanti-

cism of Casper David Friedrich in particular), Marc decided to devote himself entirely to painting. He took masterclasses from Gerard Huysman, Simon Baylon, and Karin Smits, among others. He describes his own artistic style as 'suggestive illusionism'. His canvases are often suggestions of reality, nearly all of which take the form of landscapes. Marc transforms reality with his brush. Landscapes that hold a special place in his heart are a common subject, but he also paints from the imagination and immortalizes these fantasies on canvas.

LIMBURG A unique province for working and living

T

he province of Limburg is considered a very attractive region with a uniquely international character thanks to its border location in the heart of Western Europe. Living here is comfortable with plenty of green and a convivial ambience. The work-life balance is ideal due to the presence of prominent international educational establishments and innovative industries. Three leading representatives tell us about it from their practical experiences. Jo van den Brand is a professor of physics and works for Nikhef

30

in Amsterdam. He is involved in a mega project focussing on bringing the so-called 'Einstein Telescope' to the south of Limburg. “It has to become an enormous detector of gravity waves that enables us to explore space at an even deeper level. The south of Limburg is ideally suited for this, not only for its location and top institutes and universities close by for the vital knowledge, but also for a very innovative manufacturing industry that supports realisation. The device measures minute vibrations, which can be achieved

in this region with not a lot of heavy industry. It’s relatively quiet here. In September, the MECC in Maastricht hosts a big conference on this science, in which 140 universities and institutes participate from all over the world. " Hotel and catering entrepreneur Camille Oostwegel has felt the international appeal of the south of Limburg for many years already. He runs renowned hotels such as Château Neercanne, Château St. Gerlach and the Kruisherenhotel. “This area offers a two-thousandyear-old culture with a distinctive landscape, lovely villages, attractive historic cities, and all on a human scale. It maintains a unique identity comprising original, high quality food, wine production, culture and folklore. The region is still authentic and that’s unique for Europe. In the Netherlands it is the best place to live and work."

Rector Magnificus of Maastricht University, Prof. Dr. Rianne Letschert, underlines that innovation in the Maastricht region goes hand in hand with universal values. “Maastricht University aims to contribute to a healthy and economically strong region, focusing on our immediate surroundings in the city of Maastricht and Limburg, but also in the Euregion and beyond. Our goal is to link societal engagement directly with research, education and innovation.” “Maastricht University aims to have an impact by deploying high-level research and innovation to resolve societal challenges. The four Brightlands campuses in the province of Limburg, where researchers, students and the industry work together, serve as drivers of Euregional and European development.” 31
