For one week every year, Maastricht can rightfully claim the title of global city of art. We owe this great honour to The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF), a renowned, global event that feels extraordinarily at home in our city. The world’s largest and most famous art fair was born and raised in Maastricht. There is a blood tie between the fair and the city: the organizers can count on the commitment of local and provincial governments, and the city can count on TEFAF in terms of the calibre and image it enjoys. Besides the high-quality art, the event’s international nature is also an essential ingredient of the success. And Maastricht just happens to tick that cosmopolitan box. Located in the heart of the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion, we are in an area of Western Europe that brings together three nationalities, almost four million inhabitants, four internationally focused universities, two airports, two high-speed railway stations, several conference centres, and much more. In this striking Euroregion, two major

cultures – Germanic and Latin –have rubbed shoulders for centuries. The people and businesses who call this part of the world home have a naturally global outlook. Even in this modern age, it is culture that unites us. Without culture, today’s Euroregional partnership would never have flourished. Welcome to de Bijenkorf, Maastricht’s finest department store

The province of Limburg, the city of Maastricht and TEFAF share a passion for thinking outside the box and pushing boundaries. Boundaries that do not even seem to exist, just across the street from the MECC building, where scientists are creating art, themselves. In their Pathfinder lab, they are researching the possibilities of constructing the Einstein Telescope in Limburg soil: a cutting-edge scientific research centre for measuring ‘gravitational waves’, which would enable them to peer into the history of our universe.

In 1955, LIFE Magazine published an interview with the namesake of this technological invention, the great Albert Einstein himself, shortly after his death on April 18th of that same year. He said: “The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existence. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvellous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery each day.”

Curiosity is what made Einstein one of the greatest scientists of our time. But I think it is also the very foundation of art. Featuring over 275 prestigious dealers from all over the world, TEFAF remains a showcase for the finest art works currently on the market, all born out of curiosity the artist had or has for the world, for life and for love.

The Provincial Government Building houses a permanent exhibition about The Treaty of Maastricht (1992), one of the most significant treaties in the history of Europe and European integration and which resulted in the birth of the euro. The Bonnefanten museum rises to greet you along the Meuse. Designed by the famous Italian architect Aldo Rossi, the museum is composed of three separate structures, of which the central one gives way to a cylindrical building. Its lofty dome, crowned by a belvédère, commands fabulous views of both the river and the city. The art on exhibit at the Bonnefanten dates from 1100 to 1800, but the collection also encompasses some fine works of contemporary and applied art (primarily silver and ceramics). The museum naturally also offers temporary or other exhibitions.

StarsofEurope was commissioned in 2001 in honour of the ten-year anniversary of the Treaty of Maastricht. It was initially conceived by Italian artist Maura Biava, who graduated from the State Academy

Maastricht’s iconic public library was completed in 1999. The architect of this building, which was beloved by both locals and tourists from the outset, was Jo Coenen. Centre Céramique underwent a metamorphosis in 2021 in order to broaden its range of public services. The building is now home to the Kumulus music school, for example. Later this spring, Centre Céramique will be partly redesigned and transformed into a museum dedicated to Maastricht’s multifaceted history.

6. Helpoort Museum

The Helpoort (Hell’s Gate) is the oldest city gate in the Netherlands, and the only one still standing in Maastricht. It was built in April 1229 subject to the consent of Henry I, Duke of Brabant. 7. Limburg Regional Historic Centre ‘crack in the wall’

It is simply impossible to ignore the gigantic ‘crack in the wall’ in the listed building that houses the Limburg Regional Historic Centre. The stone window frames look as if they could come tumbling down any minute, were it not that the one at the bottom is still attached to the building on one side. www.rhcl.nl

8. Statue of d’Artagnan

D’Artagnan met his death at Maastricht’s Tongeren Gate on 25 June 1673 during a bloody battle between the French and Staatse (Government) troops. A bronze statue was erected in 1977 to mark the spot where this legendary captain of the musketeers was killed. The statute was designed by sculptor Alexander Taratynov. Marking 350 years since the death of the Musketeer d’Artagnan, the year 2023 will be full of activities – some taking place during TEFAF – to commemorate this historical event.

9. Passageway of wisdom

Grote Looierstraat 17

Artist Borek Sipek (1949-2016) was commissioned by the Art and Heritage Committee of Maastricht University to create this Passageway to Wisdom. It serves as the entrance to the university library on Grote Looiersgracht in Maastricht’s old city centre.

10. Museum of Natural History

The Natural History Museum of Maastricht is located in the former Convent of the Grey Franciscan Sisters in the Jekerkwartief district. The museum is renowned for a collection of fossils that is unique in the Netherlands and dates back to the Cretaceous Period. It includes various Mosasauruses, Prognathodons, and hadrosaurusses.

11. Jan van Eyck Academy

The Jan van Eyck Academy is an international post-academic institute for the visual arts. The institute is located in a listed building designed by architect Frits Peutz and built between 1958 and 1961.

12. Museum of photography

Fotomuseum aan het Vrijthof is a privately owned photography museum located in the centre of Maastricht. The museum is housed in what was formerly known as the Spanish Government Building. The building originally served as the country seat of Emperor Charles V in the 16th century, and is thought to be the oldest preserved residential building in the city. The museum boasts a special TEFAF room, a gift from the art fair bearing the same name.

13. Treasury of Saint Servatius Basilica Saint Servatius, Keizer Karelplein 3

The shrine of St. Servatius (also called the ‘Noodkist’) contains the relics of the Netherlands’ first bishop. It is an exceptionally fine example of the Maasland goldsmiths’ art. A number of unique objects are on display in this treasury, which are carried through the streets of Maastricht on the occasion of the Procession of Holy Relics once every seven years.

Marres, House of Contemporary Culture Capucijnenstraat 98

Housed in a historic residential building in the centre of Maastricht, the mission of Marres is to explore contemporary art in the broadest sense of the word. The museum was founded in 1998 and owes its name to the Marres family, a family of brewers who occupied this house for most of the 20th century. www.marres.org

The unique Dominicanen Bookshop has been housed in the age-old Dominican church ever since the autumn of 2006. It is considered one of the most iconic bookshops in all of Europe. www.libris.nl/dominicanen

Sphinxpassage Sphinxcour

The Sphinxpassage is a 120-metre-long covered tiled passageway that runs from the Eiffel Building to the Pathé cinema. Almost 30,000 tiles bring the history of Maastricht’s ceramics industry, and more specifically the Sphinx tile factory, to life in words, images, and objects. The Sphinx quarter, located around the Eiffel Building, is developing rapidly into a lively modern neighbourhood. www.sphinxkwartier.nl

Bureau Europa is a platform for architecture and design that organizes exhibitions as well as lectures, workshops, city tours, and innumerable activities focusing on architecture, urban development, and design. www.bureau-europa.nl

19. Muziekgieterij

Boschstraat 5

Muziekgieterij is one of the Netherlands’ youngest pop music venues. Founded in 2004, this venue has grown into one of the foremost cultural hotspots of Maastricht and the Euregion in less than two decades. The venue is located in the former Timmerfabriek. The factory buildings were once part of the Royal Sphinx crystal and ceramics factory. www.muziekgieterij.nl

20. Lumiére Cinema

The Lumière cinema has been housed in this beautiful new building in the Sphinx quarter since September 2016. The listed building was built in 1910 to serve as the power plant for the old Sphinx factories. Restaurant and arthouse cinema. www.lumiere.nl

21. Statue of Minckelers

Markt square

Maastricht-born Jan Pieter Minckelers was the inventor of gas lighting. A statue created by Bart van Hove was erected in memory of him on Markt square. An eternal flame burns symbolically from a gas torch held in Minckelers’ hand.

22. City Hall

Markt square 78

The City Hall on Markt square was constructed between 1659 and 1664 under the guidance of master architect Pieter Post. Its tower dates from 1684 and contains a carillon with 49 bells that is still regularly played. Featuring beautiful wall tapestries, stucco work, ceiling paintings, and mantelpieces, the interior is also of considerable interest.

23. Het Dinghuis

The Maastricht Visitor Center is located in the Dinghuis, a building that carries a long history with it. Its name comes from the Dutch word dingen, which means ‘to administer judgement’. Even today, the Dutch word for legal proceedings is geding. The building dates from 1470. www.bezoekmaastricht.nl

24. Onze Lieve Vrouwe Basiliek

In the 5th century, a church had been already erected on the spot where the Basilica of Our Lady stands today. This was probably the oldest Christian church in the Netherlands. It may have been built, in turn, on top of the remains of a Roman Temple. The basilica is a splendid example of Roman architecture and contains various works of art of an exceptional quality. The treasury contains many interesting objects of religious art and examples of fine craftsmanship.

The Derlon Hotel is located on Onze Lieve Vrouweplein. In this cosy museum cellar, Maastricht in the Roman Era lies literally at your feet, thanks to the extensive collection of archaeological artefacts on display here.

Op de Thermen

A small man who makes big statues, artist Arthur Spronken (1930-2018) is considered the founding father of the Limburg sculptors. His equestrian statues beautifully illustrate the dynamics of the body.

27. Mestreechter Geis

Het Bat

This character of the archetypical resident of Maastricht has been captured in the bronze statue Mestreechter Geis, as a certain nonchalance, Weltschmerz, or laissez-faire. The statue was made by the Haarlem-born artist Mari Andriessen.

28. Saint Servatius Bridge

The oldest bridge in the Netherlands may have been rebuilt several times, as well as renovated, bombed, and even blown up but its very core has always been preserved. An icon of Maastricht, the bridge defines the skyline of the oldest Roman city of the Netherlands.

29. Maastricht Railway Station Stationsplein 27

The Maastricht Railway Station was restored to its former glory at the end of 2021 after a renovation that lasted two and a half years and thanks to which many beautiful details can be admired once again. It was designed by George van Heukelom and opened in 1916.

Zonneberg Caves| Slavante 1

In the depths of the Zonneberg caves, a museum has been dug into the marl where a number of truly unique items are on exhibit, including some fine charcoal drawings. Here, you will find yourself standing eye to eye with a Monosaurus several metres in length hewn into the marl. Another highlight is a life-sized charcoal rendition of Rembrand’s Nightwatch.

Hrair Sarkissian: The Other Side of Silence

First retrospective exhibition of one of the most prominent conceptual photographers of our time. Using life-size photos, the SyrianArmenian artist Hrair Sarkissian lays bare the wounds of conflicts. The ‘Other Side of Silence’ displays important works from the past fifteen years of his career as well as new assignments. The TEFAF concert has now become a tradition at The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF) in Maastricht. Following last year’s stellar performance by the renowned solo harpist Anneleen Lenaerts in St. Janskerk church, the baton will be passed to The South Netherlands Philharmonic – led by conductor Eduardo Strausser – at this year’s concert. On the evening of Wednesday 15 March, the orchestra will play the very apt Promenade from Mussorgsky’s The Pictures at an Exhibition, again in the enchanting and acoustically outstanding St. Janskerk church on Vrijthof square. Violinist Christina Büttner will accompany SALLY Dansgezelschap in Duet voor viool en dansers (Duet for violin and dancers), which they performed at the King’s Day concert. Actor and director Michel Sluysmans will perform in a monologue by Jibbe Willems, Alle Mensen worden Broers (All people become brothers). To conclude, The South Netherlands Philharmonic will perform Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, famous from the film The King’s Speech and characterized by Wagner as ‘the apotheosis of

De Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg/ SRAL, the conservation institute

Founded as a regional workshop for Limburg, over 35 years SRAL has grown into a large and leading institute in the Netherlands for practice, research, and teaching in four restoration disciplines: paintings, sculpture, historic interiors, and modern art. The SRAL studios are based in the ‘Wiebengahal’ industrial monument (1912). In the adjacent Bonnefanten, there is a public-viewing studio where museum visitors can watch SRAL restorers at work. The institute is nationally and internationally renowned for its scientific publications, academic teaching, and the working me-

thods it develops, and techniques for carrying out restoration. SRAL restores entire historic interiors at all sorts of locations throughout the Netherlands, ranging from medieval frescoes, large wall hangings, gold leather wallpaper, ornamental mantelpieces, and church interiors to modern wall art.

Since it was founded, the restoration work has been combined with a strong teaching department. From 1990 onwards, SRAL initiated and developed restoration as a field of study, the basis for the present-day Master’s programme at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). Over the same period, its collaboration with Maastricht University has grown, in MACCH, at the FASoS, and on the Maastricht Science Program. www.sral.nl

This year’s Chapeau/Maastricht Region stand at TEFAF (no. 820) will be decorated in the style of Rembrandt’s oil-on-canvas painting The Standard Bearer, which will be on display at Maastricht’s Bonnefantenmuseum in March. The TEFAF stand will echo the painting’s style and run a range of activities related to this work of art. Also on display are several artworks by the late Limburg sculptor Arthur Spronken, in anticipation of a book to be published in June on ‘Arthur Spronken’s never-before-exhibited collection of artworks’. A prepublication of this

book will feature in a special brochure available at TEFAF, and this edition of Chapeau Magazine will also shine the spotlight on it.

The Chapeau/Maastricht Region stand is a meeting place initiated by Chapeau Magazine, the Municipality of Maastricht, the Province of Limburg, Brightlands, Maastricht University, MECC Maastricht, and a number of other partners from the region. Its aim is to strengthen the link between TEFAF and the Maastricht-Limburg region.

The stand is located in the Expo Foyer upstairs, directly accessible from the fair on the ground floor. The entire Foyer will be furnished as business lounges and restaurants, complete with a spacious, central terrace.

‘gamechanger’

The South Limburg border region could become home to a prestigious European project set to reveal the secrets of the universe. The Einstein Telescope will be ten times more accurate than the existing gravitational-wave observatories and offer a unique opportunity for us to get closer to gravitational waves, laser wavelengths, and black holes. It could even help us solve the mystery of the Big Bang and further unravel the theory of relativity. Professor of Gravitational Physics at Maastricht University, Stefan Hild, sums up what is already happening in Maastricht, where work is continuing on the ETpathfinder in preparation for the Einstein project. ‘We are developing and trying out new technologies here that we can ultimately use in the future Einstein Telescope. This is, in fact, a test set-up... a large miniature version or rather a prototype of the state-of-the-art telescope that will be built after 2025.’

Project agency leaders

Dutch project agency leaders Guido Derks and Stan Bentvelsen say that the new telescope would mark a momentous occasion in studying the basic building blocks of our universe, the forces between them, and the structure of space and time.

Guido Derks was previously General Director of the Province of Limburg and former Director of Urban Development for the Municipality of Maastricht. Stan

Bentvelsen is Director of Nikhef, the organization at the cutting edge of the science within the project. Together they lead the project agency founded on 1 January, located in the former building of the De Limburger newspaper, next to the Maastricht Exhibition & Conference Centre

(MECC). This is also the same R&D site where the ETpathfinder is also set up, the prototype used to develop and test new technologies that could ultimately be used in the proposed Einstein Telescope. The purpose of the ETpathfinder to keep the technology up to date.

A two-horse race

The Einstein Telescope will have three arms that are ten kilometres long, using measurement detectors with unprecedented reliability. But building the telescope in South Limburg is by no means assured. Sardinia has also thrown its hat into the ring for the project, which will not only bring scientific insights, but also create a lot of employment opportunities. The Dutch-Belgian-German scientific cooperation is working to attract this high-quality installation in the South Limburg border region. Guido Derks said, ‘We had detailed discussions before the summer with the National Growth Fund committee, under the leadership of Jeroen Dijsselbloem and Prince Constantijn of the Netherlands, which resulted in the allocation of €930 million from the national budget. That was a massive achievement. The National Growth Fund agreed that this type of investment in scientific infrastructure will lead to more opportunities for economic development and broad prosperity in the region, the Netherlands, and the wider Euregio.’

Economic spin-off

A study by Technopolis states that the region can expect a large economic spin-off from the project, with €3.60 generated for every euro invested. This is the biggest project that has been given the go-ahead in the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) roadmap – a strategic instrument aimed at strengthening scientific integration in Europe. An ESFRI project has to be supported by at least three EU Member States. This project is very costly, but it is also a long-term one. If the decision on where the telescope will be built won’t be made until 2025, then it won’t be operational until 2035, but it will be possible to take measurements for 50 years after that.

Beautiful surroundings

Derks continued, ‘We are more than aware that the Einstein Telescope would be located in beautiful borderlands between the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. We should take this into account, of course. We are factoring in sustainability during the preparation works, construction, operation, and even decommissioning. We are also mapping out how disruption during construction can be reduced as much as possible. Once the Einstein Telescope is complete, you’ll hardly see anything above the ground, so we can continue to cherish the tranquillity of the beautiful landscape for the years to come.’

Opportunities

Guido Derks said, ‘Of course, we are doing all we can to bring the telescope to our border region, but there is another contender in the race. Sardinia is certainly going for it, and we aren’t ruling out a potential bid from Saxony in Germany. We are currently creating opportunities for industry and innovative business through valorization, thanks to LIOF and POM – the regional development agencies for the Limburg regions in the Netherlands and Belgium. We have set up a large lab in Maastricht, which now serves the Einstein Telescope. Maastricht University’s reputation for the sciences has also been structurally boosted by this development. This is incredibly important for businesses in the region. This type of opportunity to attract a whole new large-scale economic ecosystem comes once in a blue moon.’

Economic impact

Stephan Satijn, who is in charge of Economic Affairs and Education on the Provincial Council of Limburg, underlined the huge economic impact this project could have for the whole region. ‘If we manage to secure this project, it will be a bigger infrastructure project than the Willem Alexander tunnel in Maastricht. And while you won’t see much of it above ground, it will have a huge spinoff on the economy in Limburg and the Euregio, not only creating 1400 permanent jobs but also attracting an array of specialists in this field. That makes

our region very appealing at a global level, also for other sectors too.’

Satijn is pleased with how the international cooperation on the project has gone so far. ‘The universities of Maastricht, Liège, Aachen, and Leuven are closely involved. We already have the political support of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany, and this year we are determined to get Belgium fully on board. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has already discussed it with his Belgian counterpart, Alexander De Croo. The bid will be ready by 2025, and the winning location must then be chosen.’

Satijn knows from experience that the Italians are powerful diplomats when it comes to lobbying. ‘Just look at how much money Brussels sends to Italy.

So, we need to make our bid look as strong as possible and come out on top in Europe. Getting the support of countries like Germany is crucial. That’s why it’s great that North Rhine-Westphalia really wants to invest in it too. I dare say that this will bring about a true scientific revolution in the world. Just think how wonderful it would be if we had this right here in our region. And I am also thinking about how much this will boost our educational institutions and strengthen links with the Brightlands campuses, where innovation is also in full swing.’
