7 MAASTRICHT CITY GUIDE 2017 PREFACE
This year we celebrate the 30th edition of TEFAF Maastricht.
TEFAF Maastricht is known for providing an unrivalled forum where historical connections are made and discovered. Though every year the extremely high quality of the offer and the galleries is constant, every edition of TEFAF Maastricht is different. In 2017 we are welcoming 19 new exhibitors to the fair and the 10th TEFAF Showcase section at the fair gives an additional five emerging newly established galleries the one-
off opportunity to present themselves. Designed to complement the fair’s modern and contemporary section, the third edition of TEFAF Curated: “La Grande Horizontale”, will be curated by Penelope Curtis, director of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon. Under the unifying theme of the reclining figure, Curtis aims to reflect on periods from the Antique to the present. We owe much appreciation to the many loyal people and organisations in Maastricht and its surroundings who have supported TEFAF in the past 30 years. Without them TEFAF would certainly not have been able to be where we are now. We would like to especially thank Jo Cortenraedt and his team for all the efforts in the production of this Maastricht Guide. I wish everybody a delightful stay in Maastricht and a wonderful TEFAF Maastricht 2017. Willem van Royen Chairman TEFAF Maastricht

9 MAASTRICHT CITY GUIDE 2017 PREFACE
Ideal couple
Every year in March, Maastricht is the world’s most important city of art. This is because of The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF). In 30 years, it has become the world’s most illustrious art fair. The TEFAF was born in Maastricht and it has attained its present stature in Maastricht. That means that the two are now inseparable. The TEFAF and Maastricht are an ideal couple. The art fair is leading when it comes to fine arts and antiques; our city offers ‘fine art’ in the form of historic buildings, gastronomy,
culture and exclusive shops. They both have character, charm and good taste, with the added advantage of an international setting. Last year, a new aspect was added to those unique selling points. The TEFAF has spread its wings and now has a branch in New York City. In October, TEFAF Fall was held for the first time in the prestigious Harvard Club in the centre of Manhattan. Needless to say, New York City and Maastricht cannot be compared as regards scale and influence. But what we do share is a love of the fine arts. Consequently, the TEFAF forms an imaginary bridge between the capital of Limburg and the capital of the world. Maastricht is exceptionally proud of the TEFAF. The art fair opens borders and brings the world to our city. We are therefore delighted to welcome you. We hope the 270 exhibitors have a successful TEFAF. And we hope that the tens of thousands of visitors enjoy the art and the city to the full. Annemarie Penn-te Strake Mayor of Maastricht

11 MAASTRICHT CITY GUIDE 2017 PREFACE
Welcome to TEFAF Maastricht, welcome to Limburg
Maastricht, the capital of Limburg, has been proudly hosting the TEFAF for three decades now. The TEFAF has been bringing together art lovers from all over the world for 30 years and as such it is the undisputed centre of the art trade. Last year, there were more than 75,000 visitors from more than 60 countries. And continuing to inspire all these visitors with their various backgrounds is certainly an achievement on the part of the TEFAF. But it’s also an achievement on the part of Maastricht and the Euroregion to offer these visitors a warm welcome. Although in this case, ‘achievement’ may be the wrong word. After all, we in Limburg are used to sharing our his-
tory and culture with our international neighbours. It’s hardly surprising that Maastricht is the most European city in the Netherlands. TEFAF stands for The European Fine Art Fair. The word ‘European’ has extra significance this year. On 7 February, it was exactly 25 years ago that the Maastricht Treaty was signed here, marking the birth of the European Union and the euro. By launching the ‘Europe Calling! Maastricht Treaty 25th Anniversary’ programme, we in Maastricht and Limburg are contributing to the dialogue about Europe. A series of conferences, festivals and meetings will help us reflect on the Europe of today and think about the Europe of tomorrow. In this way, Maastricht will again be a real workshop for Europe that can be used by everyone, young or old, for or against, so that Europe, just like the TEFAF, can continue to innovate and develop. Welcome to TEFAF Maastricht, welcome to Limburg. Theo Bovens King’s Commissioner / Governor Province of Limburg

24 MAASTRICHT CITY GUIDE 2017 TEFAF CURATED
TEFAF Curated: La grande horizontale between heaven and earth This year’s curated section of the fair will bring together works of different periods, exploiting the unusual depth and range of TEFAF. Under the unifying theme of the reclining or recumbent figure, the section aims to represent periods from the Antique to the present.
SADIE MURDOCH Study for modelling Charlotte Perriand 3 Giclée print 33.7 x 48 cm.
By combining invited artists and galleries, with a range of works sourced through existing contributors, the curator Penelope Curtis aims to present a compelling slice through time, looking at the horizontal form as it moves through the figure to the land. The reclining figure as a motif has been in continuous use since ancient times. In 20th century art, the Reclining Figure, as a phrase, and as a form, became indelibly associated with the sculpture of Henry Moore, whose first ‘Reclining Figure’ dates back to 1929. The success of Moore’s reclining figures can be understood in terms of their deep roots in many cultures, Western and non-Western. In his own discussion of the stimuli for his work, Moore delineated some very simple and common visual and tactile experiences. A number of artists whose work features the reclining or horizontal motif will present works alongside examples from the historic past. TEFAF Curated aims to highlight some of the most compelling and eloquent works of art, from the western and non- western traditions, all of which speak a language premised on the fundamental conditions of life and death.

Visit South Limburg Maastricht region A rainbow of languages, cultures, food, wine, and charming hills offering something unique and very special to visitors. Recently recognized as one of the world’s top 100 sustainable destinations, South Limburg is very, very green; not only its scenery but also in its practices. The southernmost part of the Netherlands is spectacularly different. Its tale is told by its hilly landscape and its proximity to many other cultures and languages. You could say that South Limburg is the rainbow of the Netherlands.
Euregion Situated in the beautiful heart of Europe, South Limburg shares borders with both Germany and Belgium – one of its most famous sights is the ‘Three Countries Point’ – and for those who thought the Netherlands was flat, it has an elevation of more than 300 metres! A history of cultural engagements makes South Limburg very special and unique. Locals simply love their beautiful homeland and the fact that they can easily visit great cities such as Maastricht, Liège (Belgium),
and Aachen (Germany). As you may imagine, this complex culture is also reflected in the area’s wonderful food and its superb lifestyle.
Best travel destination in the world: Parkstad Limburg! South Limburg has transformed a part of the region, Parkstad Limburg, from a former grey industrial mining district into one of the greenest urban areas in the Netherlands. This helped the region win the most prestigious tourism award in the world: the 2016 Tourism for Tomorrow Award. MECC Maastricht is investing in the future
MECC Maastricht has proudly hosted the world’s leading art fair, TEFAF, for the past thirty years. All of our employees are committed to giving organizers, art dealers, and visitors the best possible experience. MECC Maastricht is keeping pace with market developments and meeting the evolving needs of TEFAF. The exhibition entrance underwent an extensive renovation last year, which helped to make the TEFAF Paper department much more accessible to the public. Additional investments and improvements will be made in the years to come. The outside of the main
entrance will be fully renovated and ready for use by TEFAF visitors in 2018. New parking facilities, new roads, better logistics, and additional green areas will be created so the fair can start outside the building. Ambitious building plans are being developed for subsequent years as well, which aim to further improve the quality of the available services. MECC Maastricht is committed to achieving the best possible result by investing in the future.
The Bonnefantenmuseum Fund

It is with justifiable pride that the Bonnefantenmuseum and the Elisabeth Strouven Foundation are presenting The Bonnefantenmuseum Fund at tefaf 2017. It is a unique and exemplary collaboration, which is relatively new and unprecedented within Dutch relations. For the Elisabeth Strouven Foundation it is the first designated fund, and for the Bonnefantenmuseum it is the first step in realising its own fund as an independent and permanent source of income. This initiative will
enable the museum to follow a distinctive line in continuing to develop as an art and artists’ museum, focusing on the ‘secret canon’ and talent development and education, and providing a haven for a wide and diverse public. You can play an important role in this venture and join us in promoting the growth and success of our museum. The Bonnefantenmuseum Fund is inspired by the endowment fund, the prevalent model in the American museum world. One difference with the American model is that
The Bonnefantenmuseum Fund will be subsumed as a designated fund under the Elisabeth Strouven Foundation, which has the status of a public benefit organisation (ANBI) and will manage and invest the fund. The museum board will determine how the fund is appropriated for projects and activities that correspond to the museum’s goals. The fund would like to appeal to you – private individuals and businesses who feel strongly about cultural life – to help us achieve the goals of this new permanent initiative by making a donation. Supporting the Bonnefantenmuseum will contribute towards realising our programmes and activities for a wide and diverse public, which include prominent temporary exhibitions, special acquisitions, conservation and management of the collections and our cultural heritage, and educational programmes and activities. It will allow the museum to continue to innovate and to invest in quality improve-
ment, both for today and for future generations. Art is for everyone and is timeless, and that is something we would like to take into the future, along with you. Your donation will build on this dream and help the Bonnefantenmuseum in the areas where extra impulses are most needed.
We welcome all contributions. Donations can be made in a variety of ways, whether a one-off donation, a recurring donation, a legacy or a lifelong gift. If you would like more information about the options for contributing to The Bonnefantenmuseum Fund, please take a look at our website. www.bonnefanten.nl www.elisabethstrouvenfonds.nl

The Painted Bird Location: Marres www.marres.org 10.03.2017 – 13.08.2017
Until 27.11.2017
Marres will be presenting a spectacular mural about Europe this March. The mural will be created by sixteen Dutch and international artists, who will be painting all the galleries and corridors, as well as the stairwell, floors, and ceilings of the Marres house. The exhibition title is derived from Jerzy Kosinski’s famous book The Painted Bird, in which a homeless child wanders through the landscape of Eastern Europe during World War II. Having a surface area of over 750 m2, the painting depicts a series of beautiful as well as frightening environments: visitors will walk through a high-tech ethnic supermarket to the last surviving plot of primeval forest, and from a virtual detention room to a live music festival in the year 2050.

Bouwvereniging Woningzorg in Maastricht will celebrate its 100th anniversary in March 2017. The historic buildings with their characteristic reddish-orange rooftops are located directly behind the central railway station, near Villa Wyckerveld. A lot has changed in a hundred years. The neighbourhood used to be situated at the very edge of the city when it was first built. During the Second World War, German soldiers took up residence in the neighbourhood, followed by American soldiers after the liberation of Maastricht. Many years later, homeowners on Scharnerweg were forced to sacrifice their front gardens for the construction of the new tunnel. The preservation of these historic homes is an important priority today. In celebration of its 100th anniversary. Passion for TASCHEN Location: Museum aan het Vrijthof www.museumaanhetvrijthof.nl 02.03.2017 - 11.06.2017
Expressing an admiration for his work, daring approach, and vision, this exhibition shines a spotlight on Benedikt Taschen. Featuring numerous special art and collector’s editions, original photographs, photo installations, and objects from the Taschen archives, this exhibition will give visitors a lively experience and impression of the diversity and quality of the work of Taschen. The exhibition covers a wide range of
subjects: from art, photography, and eroticism to sports and society.

What do you mean what do you mean and other pleasantries is a concert, an everlasting pop song, a sculptural dance, a sound installation, a stand-upcomedy show, a performance. Through seeming absurdity, Seghers smartly and inimitably exposes art practice and with beauty and hilarity ploughs through the inevitability of our woes. This feast of feelings contains a human life full of love and tragedy. DahlBonnema Needcompany & M-A-P The Moon Location: AINSI www.theateraanhetvrijthof.nl 14.03.2017 – 8.30 PM
The Moon will be an opera for 4 singers conceived as One Big Song shared and sung together. It is set in a future where solitude, loneliness and the impossibility to communicate, are vaporized and replaced by an eternal adolescence: a life in the middle of countless possibilities. Lauwers quotes the work of Abu al ‘ala al Ma’arri, a blind Arab poet who spanned the 10th and 11th centuries, and Wallada bint al Mustakfi, an Andalusian poet from the 11th century. Capture my body. As a trauma patient, Fumiyo Ikeda is given inventive treatment by her therapist Frank Focketyn. Full body motion capture registers all her movements, as she repeatedly experiences and pushes away her memories and emotions. She feverishly steers her digital representation, hoping to come to an accommodation with it and thus emerge from her trauma. As always, Eric Joris and CREW play with your perceptions. Using ground-breaking technologies, they assemble what you see, live, to create a total installation. In the meantime, Peter Verhelst’s text unravels trauma and the impossibility of intimacy.
After doctors diagnosed Gustav Mahler as suffering from a fatal heart disease, he wrote Das Lied von der Erde (1909). For the final part – Der Abschied – he created one of his most personal compositions. To a friend he wrote: “I have lost everything that made me the person I was. I must learn to walk again like a child.” Grace Ellen Barkey is now posing the same questions about our struggle with mortality. They particularly focus on the contrast with nature, which is eternal and continually renews itself. Barkey explains: “Singing about life all the time is unsustainable for anyone. MAASTRICHT CITY GUIDE 2017 WYCK MAASTRICHT
WYCK: THE ARTISTIC DISTRICT OF MAASTRICHT Every city has them: areas that are slightly more eccentric than your average district. They are often located on the outskirts of the city centre where, instead of major retailers, you’re more likely to find an abundance of small, local shops.

Maaslands Nol Beckers
In Maastricht, that district is Wyck, which offers plenty of interesting streets for visitors to stroll down. This district on the ‘other side’ of the Meuse is flourishing like never before, thanks in part to some of the unique hotels, restaurants, and shops listed in this guide. But there are also plenty of galleries and art shops to be found. While they may not be world-class establishments, they are artisanal, whimsical, and eccentric. Together, these galleries, shops, restaurants, and hotels form the colourful tapestry that is the Wyck district, to which the residents, students, and generations of Maastricht locals add their own unique touch. Many of the entrepreneurs in this part of town live above their businesses and have close ties with each other and the neighbourhood. 50

Antiquarians & bookshops A quick stroll through the area will give you an idea of what you can expect. Starting with Rechtstraat: a street with a lively and unique character. The traditional frame-maker and antiquarian bookshop Maaslands delivers true craftsmanship, including hand-made frames by Gehring & Heijdenrijk, the main supplier of TEFAF. The antiquarian bookshop owned by Ton Stille is located next door, where you can step into a lovely garden and step back in time to centuries gone by. Not everything is neatly organized, but the owner knows his way around the books, prints, and old magazines. You can also find special devotional literature and erotica. Despite being polar opposites, Antiquarian Stille Ton Stille
they occupy the same space in Ton Stille’s narrow shop. Galleries, wine & antiques This street also contains the glass gallery of Leon Salet. This memorable Maastricht figure used to outfit the local bourgeoisie with chic custom suits, but has devoted himself entirely to his art in recent years. Other galleries include 043 and De Serre. Also worth a visit is the wine and antique shop Ruyters & De Koning. Here you can shop for antique vases and other bits and bobs, as well as an impressive selection of specialty wines, all of which are organic. They may not be cheap, but they are all of exceptionally high quality. A new gallery – Galerie Prima Vista – recently opened on Hoogbrugstraat and features a wide selection of fascinating works by Dutch artists like Stefan Bleekrode, who creates extremely detailed cityscapes using pen and ink. This gallery is certainly worth a visit.
(Dutch for ‘wonderment’), the selection makes sense. Coen Gorter’s interior design shop is located close to the railway station and is just as artistic due to the marvellous fabrics he imports from Paris and other cities. Art and interior design converge seamlessly in this shop. Clock lovers should definitely pay a visit to Patoe Atelier on the corner of Alexander Battalaan. Here, clockmaker Frans Mulders has been repairing and selling beautiful clocks in all shapes and sizes since 1984. Incidentally, this is the only place in the Maastricht region where this traditional craft is still practiced. For craftsmanship and artistry, Wyck really is the place to be. 63 MAASTRICHT CITY GUIDE 2017 HOTELS
MAASTRICHT’S HOTELS INVESTING IN QUALITY Maastricht has gained a number of small-scale hotels including The Dutch Twin Peaks hotel, opened by the owners of Hotel Beaumont. A few more new hotels are due to open soon, too, such as the Student Hotel in the former Sphinx factory building. Many existing hotels have made extra efforts in the past year to further improve their quality. Numerous rooms have been fully renovated at hotels including Crowne Plaza, the NH Hotel, L’Empereur, and the Van der Valk Hotel. Antoine Scherens, chairman of Sahot (a cooperative organization of hotels in Maastricht), explains that the emphasis is on further quality improvements. ‘The range of hotels in Maastricht generally satisfies the demand throughout the year, although there is always extra demand for rooms during major events such as TEFAF. At such times, the surrounding area also
offers additional options for guests. We are seeing that many hotels are not resting on their laurels; they are investing in quality in order to give guests exactly what they want. In future, new hotels will only emerge in niche markets, with concepts that the city does not yet have. Through cooperation, we as a city and region can also ensure that the entire sector is fully prepared to host the wonderful event of TEFAF perfectly.’ MAASTRICHT GUIDE

Timeless Beauty
Deputy Igor Philtjens
Barely half an hour’s drive from Maastricht is Tongeren, Belgium’s oldest city. It is home to the Gallo-Romeins Museum, the 2011 winner of the prestigious European Museum Award. Immerse yourself in the distant past and discover the story of humans, from prehistoric times to the end of the Roman era. Admire the more than two thousand objects in the permanent collection, beautifully spotlit and presented in an intriguing setting. Educational films, models, and lifesized figures bring the past to life. The museum is currently hosting the exhibition ‘Timeless Beauty’. In this wonderful exhibition, the Gallo-Roman Museum makes a connection between authentic objects, intriguing writings by Roman authors, and the sensual photos of the internationally renowned art photographer Marc Lagrange who died too young († 2015), whose work is regularly exhibited at major art fairs such as TEFAF in Maastricht. Igor Philtjens, member of the Pro-

92 MAASTRICHT CITY GUIDE 2017 MAASTRICHT TREATY
Twenty-fifth anniversary of the Maastricht Treaty Birthplace of the euro
On 9 and 10 December 1991, MECC Maastricht hosted two thousand journalists from around the world. The journalists were monitoring the political negotiations surrounding the introduction of the euro, which was being held a few hundred metres away at Gouvernement aan de Maas (the provincial government building). In those few days, Maastricht and the surrounding area were in a kind of state of emergency. Nearly a thousand police officers and other security personnel were on hand to maintain order and to protect the eleven European leaders and the French president, who had gathered in the southernmost city of the Netherlands for their biannual summit. The world was in motion. The Gulf War had ended earlier that year. The clashes in Yugoslavia, which would mark the beginning of a long and brutal civil war, had just begun. The Cold War was officially over. The Berlin Wall had recently fallen,
uniting East and West Germany. A great sense of optimism swept across Europe. But not every country was celebrating. While Germany and France, represented by legendary leaders Helmut Kohl and François Mitterrand, became lifelong friends in Maastricht, the UK used the summit to push its own agenda and insist on exceptions. The former empire was uncooperative on several fronts. Under no circumstances did it want to be part of the economic and monetary union that was being forged with great MAASTRICHT GUIDE

difficulty. Prime Minister John Major immortalized the city of Maastricht by turning its name into a verb: ‘We cannot Maastricht the whole of Europe,’ he said, not realizing his reasoning would later help to lay the foundations for Brexit. On those cold December days, many thousands of journalists witnessed the procession of European powers and reported on the events that would forever change the face of Europe. Among them was Jo Cortenraedt, editor-in-chief of Chapeau Magazine (and publisher of this TEFAF Guide), who was reporting on behalf of the Netherlands Broadcasting Authority (NOS) and De Telegraaf (the biggest newspaper in the Netherlands). The European Summit of 1991 left a lasting impression on Cortenraedt. Influenced in part by the huge impact the Maastricht Treaty had on the lives of countless European citizens in the twenty-five years since
94

its ratification, Cortenraedt and his colleague Maarten van Laarhoven launched a major project in 2015 with the famous and much-discussed treaty as its subject. Among other things, this led to the surprising photography exhibition Ontgrensd (‘blurring borders’), which compares photos of Limburg’s present-day border areas with photos of the same locations taken in the past. These photos evoke strong feelings of nostalgia for many people. At the same time, however, there is the realization that the ‘old days’ were not always the ‘good days,’ a discussion topic this exhibition helped bring to light. A book titled Het Verdrag van Maastricht 25 jaar later; de impact van een historische Eurotop (‘The Maastricht Treaty 25 years later: the impact of a historic European summit’,
ISBN 978-90-79226-35-1) was published, which inspired a documentary of the same name in which the involved parties at the time, present-day European politicians, and experts explain what Maastricht meant to them. The filmmakers spoke to European figureheads such as Jean-Claude Juncker (president of the European Commission), Martin Schulz (former president of the European Parliament), and Herman van Rompuy (former prime minister of Belgium and the first permanent president of the European Council). All three were in favour of exercising extreme caution in terms of dealing with the achievements made in Maastricht in 1991. Former German Minister of Finance Theo Waigel and former Dutch prime ministers Wim Kok and Ruud Lubbers also featured in the film. In the series of interviews that served as the
foundation for both the book and the documentary, they explain their experiences of what they consider to be the most important treaty in the modern history of Europe after the Treaty of Rome. The far-reaching agreement between the European heads of state and the French president, which was signed on 7 February 1992, has not only dominated the news for twenty-five years, it also made famous the small city of Maastricht, which hosts the world’s leading art fair - TEFAF - each year, which is the hometown of the famous musician André Rieu, and which is the home base of the internationally acclaimed Maastricht University. In the words of Jean-Claude Juncker, the most powerful man in Europe and one of the treaty’s signatories: ‘Maastricht is there forever!’

E M xcellent entrepreneurship in Maastricht Determining the value of something is the first step in its recognition and conservation, according to Flemish conservationist and social entrepreneur Ignace Schops. ‘Artists like Michelangelo and Van Gogh had no idea how valuable their work would one day become. That value is determined by people. And value, after all, is in the eye of the beholder.’ As an entrepreneur with a passion for nature, Schops (52) – one of the speakers at an assembly on excel-

Geometric figure According to urban planner and former chief Government Architect Jo Coenen, an Internationale Bauausstellung (International Architecture Exhibition, IBA) serves as a catalyst for transforming the physical and cultural landscape of an area. This phenomenon emerged in Germany more than a century ago as an exhibition on modernist architecture and has since developed into an intensive urban design approach adopted and propagated by such architects as Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius, and Le Corbusier. In Parkstad – an urban area in South Limburg surrounded by an
undulating landscape of green hills – IBA was commissioned to improve regional orientation, address property vacancy in the city centre, and increase the visibility of green areas. IBA is looking for innovative, future-proof projects that will be of lasting importance to the development of a town, city or region. IBA does not do any construction work itself it manages processes. It is laying the foundations for a new orientation towards the future which will drive social change. Put simply, IBA helps to improve a town, city or region. IBA gives them a boost.

Every summer, world-class theatre companies travel to Heerlen for Cultura Nova and every four years, the WMC world festival for wind music is held in the former mining town of Kerkrade. Modern expressions of art and culture are high on this region’s agenda. Parkstad is a breeding ground for young, creative industry, for street art and for urban art. In 2020, the IBA period will conclude with an exhibition of the realised projects. Cultural projects have a prominent position during this period: these form the fertile soil in which the area blossoms. Recreation and tourism are the primary economic drivers of this for-
mer mining region. In early 2016, Parkstad won a prestigious internaVÉRONIQUE BAMPS /STAND 274 tional award as the best tourist desNecklace tination in the world. In early 2017, R.H. The first double-decker tunnel in Europe Leading straight to TEFAF!
V.l.n.r.: John Aarts, Melanie Schultz van Haegen, Annemarie Penn-te Strake, Louis Prompers en Theo Bovens.
Visitors travelling by car to the TEFAF art fair at MECC Maastricht will immediately notice the change when they arrive: instead of driving past the tunnel, they will get to travel through it this year. The biggest intersection in the Maastricht region has been structurally improved and is the first double-decker tunnel in Europe to allow both cars and lorries to pass through all four tubes. The two bottom tubes are intended for traffic that does not have to enter the city of Maastricht, travelling in the direction of Eindhoven towards Liège and vice versa. The upper four tubes are intended for local traffic. Work is currently underway to prepare the remaining connections for use, with the intention of getting the entire traffic system up and running by the summer. The tunnel will then be officially opened by King Willem-Alexander, after which work will begin
to create a green zone above the tunnel tubes to significantly improve the residential and business climate in the region. E. H.
