I would like to welcome all visitors and music lovers from all over the world here in Maastricht. The people of this city are proud that André Rieu is our most famous inhabitant. He is the perfect example of the charisma of the city of Maastricht felt worldwide. And André speaks with love and proud about his city during his tours all over the world. We are very thankfull for all his efforts. The people of Maastricht have been internationally oriented from time immemorial. We stay humble, for our city is only modest in size. But this small area exhibits our organised, social and pleasant qualities. It is a small

diamond among metropolises, but one that sparkles with great appeal. Maastricht is a historic city with a modern face and a bright future: a real star among cities. And the center of the Euregio with cities , as Liege, Aachen and Hasselt. An extraordinary city that combines its monumental setting with youth and ideas. A true European city with metropolitan flair that encourages exciting encounters, especially during the André Rieu concerts. As a hotspot on crossroads between cities and countries in Northwestern Europe, it’s also a centre for a broad international community, supported by excellent educational institutes: the University of Maastricht, Zuyd University for Applied Sciences, Maastricht School of Management and many other international institutes. May you enjoy all the delights of staying in our city, be it now or sometime again in the future. Thank you for being here in Maastricht, and I wish you a great time in our city and during the concert of André Rieu. O. Hoes Mayor of Maastricht -5

9 years of Vrijthof-concerts

A

ndrĂŠ Rieu had been thinking about giving concerts at the Vrijthof in the centre of his hometown Maastricht for a while, but it took quite some time to organise the events the way he had pictured them. He needed the assistance of the municipality and the entrepreneurs at the Vrijthof, who had to give ‘their square’ to their most famous inhabitant for a couple of nights. In 2005, everything was arranged to start a remarkable tradition.

Musical Instruments

Experience the Sound of Quality

Proud supplier of André Rieu and his Johann Strauss Orchestra 2005 During the first concerts, André Rieu is already in luck with the weather. The sun shines brightly during the first three concerts. When Rieu enters through the crowd, everyone knows that it is going to be a great night. Benny Neyman, a famous singer from Maastricht, was asked to perform and he, Rieu and the orchestra play ‘Tribute to Maastricht’ together. Everyone agrees that this is the perfect start of what will turn out to be a long tradition. 2006 The second year, it is already more successful: Rieu plays five concerts in 2006 and the outdoor cafés are fuller. This time, Rieu spares no expense and flies in an entire choir from New York. The Harlem Gospel Singers make everyone at the Vrijthof dance. Even Rieu cannot help but dance on stage during ‘Oh When the Saints’. Aziëstraat 17-19

2007 Concert band Sainte Cécile is once again the festive support act. Musically, Rieu takes it to the next level by surprising everyone with beautiful music and surprising soloists. With Russian trio St. Petersburg, Rieu manages to get the entire square of people on their feet again. And everyone certainly gets their money’s worth with soloists Carmen Monarcha, Carla Maffioletti and the Platin Tenors. 2008 When night falls at the Vrijthof, male voice choir Mastreechter Staar suddenly enters with burning torches while singing ‘Conquest of Paradise’. It is the spectacular beginning of a beautiful concert. Soloist Mirusia Louwerse also performs at the Vrijthof for the first time and leaves a lasting impression with her beautiful voice.

2009 More than 450 wind instruments players from all over the Netherlands are one of this year’s highlights. With Rieu and the soloists, they play the exciting 'Pini Di Roma' and ‘Parade of the Charioteers’, the well-known theme song from the movie Ben Hur, among others.

Keep the music playing In time each violin will loose its strings. No reason to stop playing of course: repair is a matter of minutes. And just like a violin looses its strings most men and women will suffer from a greater or lesser extend of hair loss. So it’s good to know that Hair Science Institute has developed a unique method for hair multiplication: Hair Stem Cell Transplantation®. Without pain, blood or scars your own hair will produce new hair. Are you suffering from hair loss or even baldness? Just call us or send an email for a free consultation with one of our doctors. We guarantee: it will bring back the music in your life. T +31 (0)43 601 81 01 / info@hasci.com / www.hasci.com

2010 Rieu has invited the SouthAfrican soloists who he worked with on tour to join him on stage this year during the concerts at the Vrijthof: the fantastic young soprano Kimmy Skota from Cape Town, the Bloemfontein Children’s Choir and the children of the Houtbay Music Project give a South-African touch to the Vrijthof. 2011 Rieu brings in two fantastic guest choirs: the Harlem Gospel Choir and the Soweto Gospel Choir – and one very special guest: Academy Award-winning actor Sir Anthony Hopkins! The Hollywood star is a great admirer of André Rieu and wrote a waltz called ‘And the Waltz Goes On’, inspired by Rieu. In Maastricht, Rieu plays the composition for this large an audience for the first time. When Mirusia flies over the Vrijthof as Mary Poppins, everyone stares open-mouthed at the sky.

2012 This year is all about the 25th anniversary of Rieu and his Johann Strauss orchestra. A number of highlights from his career are reproduced: Frédéric Jenniges with his zither, Carla Maffioletti with her perfect aria ‘Mein Herr Marquis’, the Mastreechter Staar, the Platin Tenors, the charming Carmen Monarcha with ‘Habanera’, Kimmy Skota with the emotional ‘Casta Diva’ and a reunion with our Russian friends from St. Petersburg. 2013 Rieu starts this year with a musical tribute to the new Dutch King and Queen. He has also invited a number of his musical friends from all over the world. He plays the beautiful ‘Adios Nonino’ with Carlos Buono, the entire square of people sings along with Jermaine Jackson and Trini Lopez gets everyone dancing in their chairs with his classic ‘La Bamba’!

Favourite spots André Rieu

Buitengoed Slavante

Restaurant: Buitengoed Slavante (10 min by car) with view of the Maas. Try Pannekoeken or black pudding (Blutwurst) with apples. Also the stylish Restaurant Chateau Neercanne for ‘haute cuisine’. Or if you like it a little more relaxed you should try our regional specialty ‘Zoervleis’ with Pommes in one of the many lovely restaurants in the city centre. Hotel: High Class; Kruisherenhotel. It used to be a church and is now a beautiful hotel. (www.designhotels.com/ kruisheren).

Vrijthof

Favourite spot: Vrijthof, because you can really breathe the flair of this beautiful city here. People can relax in front of the beautiful Patrician houses and the view of the Servatius Basilica is so beautiful. Maastricht has about 40 churches. But my favorite is the Basiliek van Onze-Lieve-Vrouw at the Onze Lieve Vrouweplein.

20 -

Chateau Neercanne

Café: ‘In Den Ouden Vogelstruys’. It's the oldest Café in Maastricht. I love to have some apple cake there, a Limburg specialty.

In Den Ouden Vogelstruys

Shopping: Actually, I almost never go shopping. I just don’t have the time to do it. I will go once a year and buy everything I need on one single day within two hours (laughs). But you will find so many beautiful little creative shops in the city center around the Vrijthof. Just take your time to stroll around and you will find gifts for your friends and family, antiques, clothes and souvenirs. You will find lots of exclusive shops in and around the Stokstraat and also in the Wyck-area at the other side of the river.

maastricht and andrĂŠ's music

What does Maastrichts mean for you and your Music? I was born in Maastricht and I have lived in this beautiful city ever since. Although we travel the whole world and I have seen London, Paris, New York, Buenos Aires, Sydney and many more. I would never leave my hometown to live in one of those cities instead although they are exciting and beautiful. But Maastricht is such a quiet paced city, with lots of trees, the buildings are old and beautiful and full of history. Here I was able to develop my musicianship, to learn 22 -

and concentrate fully on what I do. And when we get back from touring the world, this is where I can relax. If you are surrounded by architectural beauty it is easy to make the music we do. Roman settlement Around the beginning of the Common Era, the Romans drove the Celts out of Maastricht and built a bridge over the Meuse. ‘Maastricht’ comes from the Latin ‘Mosae Trajectum’, meaning ‘ford over the Meuse’. Religious centre 380 Bishop Servatius moves the episcopal see from Tongeren to Maastricht. In the Middle Ages, his grave is a popular pilgrimage site. 1204 Maastricht is granted medieval city rights. During the Middle Ages Maastricht comes under the joint sovereignty of the dukes of Brabant and the prince-bishops of Liège.

General Dibbets succeeds in keeping Maastricht in Dutch hands during the Belgian Revolution of 1830. Early industrial city 1830 Industrialization comes to the Netherlands and to Maastricht first, when Petrus Regout, a glass and pottery manufacturer in Maastricht, purchases the first steam engine.

Visiting Maastricht Helpoort

I

t's all in the mix! No matter what you do, in Maastricht culture is always an experience. You are submerged in a blend of shapes and styles, colors and fragrances. The past and the present are intertwined in the countless imposing monuments and modern architecture. Its cultural palette gives Maastricht a unique character; mysterious and provocative with its underground cultural treasures and characteristic towers, and dynamic and extroverted with its lively festivals, expositions, and breathtaking performances. Whatever your taste, Maastricht is guaranteed to tickle your senses.

32 -

Monuments There are certain sights you just have to see when you visit Maastricht. Don’t miss the Helpoort, the oldest city gate in the Netherlands, which was built by Henry I of Brabant in 1229 as part of the city’s fortifications. Now it houses an exhibition on Maastricht’s fortifications. The City Hall on the Markt Square is also part of Maastricht’s heritage, built in 1659-1664 by the architect Pieter Post. The tower dates from 1684 and houses a carillon with 49 bells still played regularly by the City's official carillon player. The much-needed city’s fortifications include the pentagonal Fort St. Pieter, on the northern edge of St. Pietersberg hill, dating from 1701-1702. You should also visit the Museum aan het Vrijthof, in the 14th-century home of the Duke of Brabant. It now houses the Museum, the splendid Grand Café Soiron, and a Museum shop. Another historic building is the Dinghuis, on the corner of Kleine

Staat and Grote Staat. The Dutch word ‘staat’ in these street names means ‘the place where municipal authority is located’. The name ‘Dinghuis’ comes from the Dutch ‘dingen’, which means ‘to administer judgement’. This building was the courthouse until around 1650. These days, it houses the Maastricht Tourist Board. Subterranean surprises
Much of Maastricht’s cultural heritage is not visible to the eye, as there are almost as many cultural treasures below ground as above ground.
The Derlon Hotel’s cellar houses a museum with Roman artefacts from the second, third, and fourth centuries. Another underground museum, Schuilen in Maastricht, is located one of the galleries of the Kazematten underground bunker complex. This museum is devoted to the shelters created in Maastricht during World War II and the Cold War. The Du Moulin Line and the Kazematten, a network of tunnels and mineshafts used in defending the city during times of siege between 1575 and 1825, can also be seen, still surrounding Maastricht. - 33

Dominican Church

Basilica of Onze Lieve Vrouwe

Maastrichts treasures
The core of the medieval transept basilica of St Servatius dates from around AD 1000 and was built above the grave of St Servatius (St. Servaas). Maastricht keeps its greatest relics in the basilica’s treasury: the chest reliquary (Noodkist), the goblet, and the bust of St Servatius. The collection includes precious metals, ivory, silks, paintings, and statues. Religues culture Maastricht has been a ‘tourist’ destination since the Middle Ages. Pilgrims flocked to the city to visit the grave of St Servatius in the St Servaas Basilica. Over fifty churches, chapels, monasteries, and convents take part in the annual religious processions through the city, showing that religion is still a vibrant part of Maastricht’s culture. The treasury of the basilica of Onze Lieve Vrouwe is no less magnificent. It contains religious art and articles including richly embroidered liturgical garments, relics, processional banners, liturgical silver, and statues. The

Gothic St. Janskerk is also part of the city’s rich religious heritage. Originally a Roman Catholic parish church, it was converted into a Protestant church in 1632. It has a very special pulpit, beautiful gravestones and wall paintings, and the monumental Binvignat organ. The people of Maastricht are highly inventive, particularly in preserving their heritage. Over the years, many churches, monasteries, and convents have been threatened with closing. They have them from destruction by receiving a new use. The fifteenth-century Kruisherenklooster (Monastery of the Crosiers) and its church is a perfect example of this. The entire complex was transformed into a luxurious design hotel with respect for its history by renowned hôtelier Camille Oostwegel. The thirteenth-century former Dominican church and monastery have also been repurposed. After thorough restoration work, it now houses Boekhandel Dominicanen, 'one of the world's most beautiful bookshops' (according to UK quality newspaper The Guardian). - 35

Maastricht: a shopping paradise

Kiki Niesten

Just as Parisiennes are praised all over the world for their excellent sense of fashion and style, residents of Maastricht are known throughout the country for their good taste and savoir vivre. We in Maastricht believe it is a mini-version of Paris. We stroll down streets filled with authentic shops, including both smaller trendy labels and high-end fashion. Our favourite shopping route starts on Stokstraat, close to Onze Lieve Vrouweplein with bustling outdoor cafés. It is spring: brightly coloured Marc Jacobs dresses provide a cheerful contrast to the white interior of boutique Aim (no. 59). All the shops on Stokstraat are located in these kinds of beautiful eighteenth-century buildings. For fashion lovers, Kiki Niesten’s exclusive boutique (no. 28-32) is reason enough to visit Maastricht. Her magnificent collection of labels such as Prada, Lanvin, Céline and Azzedine Alaïa has women tingling with excitement. And not just in Maastricht, but in the entire country! The owner likes simple, timeless styles, but also has all the must-haves

of this season – Prada’s Geisha shoes, Céline’s Luggage Bags. New to this street is spectacular diorama-like shop Shoebaloo (no. 25). The outward appearance of the shop deceives: the inside might make you a little dizzy from its reflecting relief-surfaced walls. At least it matches the shoes they sell: glitter and glamour, red killer heels by Alexander Wang. On the other side of the street you’ll find classic values such as the shop of high-end jeweller Leon Martens (no. 24) and the charming Steiner (no. 2), especially for antique jewellery, watches and accessories. On the other side, in the Maastrichter Brugstraat, you’ll find Willy Vossen’s Jewel and Time, a renowned jeweller in the top segment.

On Smedenstraat, our shopping gentlemen will find beautiful clothing by labels including Zegna, Ralph Lauren and Brioni at Montulet, where the friendly staff speaks Dutch with a French accent. Across the street, at the nice new shop Woolrich, you’ll find tougher but modern clothing. And Marina Rinaldi offers fashionable and elegant clothing for ladies in plus sizes. On Havenstraat, Pauw is a popular women’s clothing shop with timeless fashion. On the corner of Havenstraat and Plankstraat, you’ll see the blue awnings of Shoes & Shirts on both sides of the street. This shop is an absolute must for every gentleman with an appreciation for traditionally made shirts and shoes. Loyal international customers who come to Maastricht for the fair always stop by Shoes & Shirts. A pleasant surprise awaits: the collection of exclusive accessories has been considerably expanded as a second shop has recently been opened across the street. If the ladies find that it’s all taking a bit too long in there: just down the street, on Plankstraat, is Natan (no. 10), a shop that carries all three collections of Dutch fashion icon

Queen Máxima’s favourite brand. It is diagonally across the street from MarcCain, a German brand with exclusive designer fashion for women. From Plankstraat, you can cross over Onze Lieve Vrouweplein to Bredestraat for PL-Line (no. 7a-9). This boutique has city and casual wear for men by popular labels such as Comme des Garçons, Prada and Tom Ford For women, they have Tom Ford, Victoria Beckham and bags by Saint Laurent, among others. The corner of Bredestraat and Minckelerstraat is home to MaxMara. We definitely recommend going this way for Kymyka (no. 7), a true shoe and bag heaven with Louboutin heels with their shiny red sole as key item. A few meters down the street, gift and home accessories shop Conflict sells lovely Dutch design items that will even fit in your hand bag.

On Amorsplein you will come across yet another gorgeous shoe shop: Kinsjasa Shoes (no. 15). It has been a household name among locals for years because of the ever stylish collections by brands such as l’Autre Chose, APC and Isabel Marant – and yes, they also have her immensely popular wedge sneakers. Clothes of these labels are sold on Heggenstraat, a street right off the square. Muchachas (no. 16) radiates Parisian chic through a perfect combination of good basics and more unique fashion items and accessories to brighten up your day. The ‘opposite side’ of the Meuse, the Wyck area, is up-and-coming and accessible via the old Roman St. Servaasbrug or via the new Hoge Brug. Rechtstraat offers mainly atmospheric specialist shops, galleries and boutiques and on Stationsstraat you will also find several gorgeous shops. First of all, there’s the main shop of Leon Martens (no. 39-41), which is seen as the best and most exclusive jeweller of the country and has almost all high-end brands of watches and jewellery. Hermès is located next door (no. 43) and across the street you’ll see the luminous spectacle shop Mestrini Occhiali that sells high-quality glasses from labels such as Chanel, Bulgari and Cartier. On the other side of Stationsstraat are two more stylish men’s fashion shops: May Fair and Van Overeem en Van Wissen. But before you go FRED DE LA BRETONIERE – SHOES & BAGS – BREDESTRAAT 24 , 6211 HC MAASTRICHT

in, first have a look at Maastricht’s first concept store: CHIQ. Shopping here is a true experience since it offers a wide range of products, from fashion (prêt-à-porter and haute couture), entertainment, bijouterie, lifestyle to even food&drinks! What’s more: you can park right in front of the store, which will come in handy while loading in all your shoppings. In the Wycker Brugstraat you will find on your left hand a modern shop called Stijl, of which its owner Chantal Peeters selects every season the best of minimal, innovative Scandinavian fashion. Last summer Stijl organized its first fashion show, which was a big success and attracted lots of opinion leaders and fashionistas.

Bonnefanten Museum Since its opening, the Bonnefanten Museum has been a wonderful addition to Maastricht’s skyline. Its collection comprises contemporary art and medieval craftworks, sculptures and altarpieces. In ‘Beating around the bush. Episode One’ these contemporary art collections are interspersed with installations by Istvan Csákány and Mark Manders and video art by Camille Henrot. In Weltsichten, you will see the various forms landscape can take in the arts from the 15th century till today with surprising encounters with many other art movements, from early European painting to contemporary photography and video art. Thermae 2000

Highlights around Maastricht Thermae 2000 The small town of Valkenburg aan de Geul is a special place when it comes to spa offers - it's been an official resort of the Netherlands since 1987. Ever since 1987, when high above on the Cauberg, the source of the ‘40,000-year-young’ medical mineral water has been discovered, Valkenburg has been allowed to use the add-on ‘healing spa’ before its name. In 1998, on the summit of the mountain Cauberg, immediately beside the ultramodern Holland Casino, as a supplement to the spa complex Thermae 2OOO, a health resort park was established that boasts vast gardens. There, you can let yourself float about calmly in the big heated pool and also try

out quite different treatments for example the Tuli sauna with its open wooden fire or the Rassul baths and, in doing so, keep enjoying the splendid panorama. Château St.Gerlach Perfect chilling is available in the environment of the Château St. Gerlach, from where you can set out to a walk in the wonderful nature reserve of Ingendael. Naturally, the Château St. Gerlach also offers you an atmospheric setting for a romantic dinner and a restful night on the former farm of the estate. Famous guests as president Bush jr, Bruce Springsteen and lately The Rolling Stones chose Château St. Gerlach as their favourite hotel.

South-Limburg: More than just a short break

A short break in South Limburg - you have to be an early riser for this because there is so much to do and experience. Decision-making may be difficult at times. Exciting marl caves in Valkenburg and the labyrinth on the Vaalserberg, magical theme parks, zoos like the GaiaZOO in Kerkrade, where the animals can even partly run free, flowering gardens and spacious parks, stunning culture and monuments, water sports on the River Meuse and skiing in Europe’s largest indoor ski arena and, and, and … Museums, galleries and studios History and culture are there in South Limburg in abundance. For centuries, the area had been a bone of contention of emperors, kings and bishops, evidence of which can be found today in the numerous museums and galleries. Visit South Limburg and discover art, history and culture, to experience up close and personal and to participate in. For details, please also see our website www.southlimburg.com. Land of castles and fortresses Of the hundreds of castles and palaces that have shaped its landscape in earlier times, South Limburg still boasts a lot of them that have been very carefully restored. Thus, it is possible for the ‘common people ’to visit those‘ noble fortresses’. Just come and explore the beautiful castles and palaces that adorn the landscape.

Marl caves and grottos South Limburg is largely dominated by clay mining. Especially around the Valkenburg area, you can find the 250-kilometer-long underground passages that have made it famous. The caves are also used to reconstruct a bygone age - a copy of a coal mine and a reconstruction of the Roman catacombs, for instance. But there are also many other activities to be enjoyed, such as underground Christmas markets, survival and cycling tours and mountain bike rides are all being held here, offering visitors the unique South Limburg experience.

Euregio –Pleasure, European diversity style This southernmost part of Limburg is surrounded on all sides by foreign countries - Belgium and Germany. The cities of Aachen, Liege and Hasselt are just a stone’s throw away from each other and we would like to invite you to take a trip there. Further information on this is available on our website www.southlimburg.com.

Hill country The hill country (Heuvelland) comprises a northern and a southern part. In the northern hill country (Heuvelland Noord), you will find the foothills of the Ardennes, which lend the region its slightly hilly character. The landscape of the southern hill country (Heuvelland Zuid) is marked by nostalgic small villages and towns amongst lush green grazing pastures and gloriously colorful high stem orchards. The creeks of Geul and Gulp which have formed the landscape centuries ago, quietly make their way through the region these days. In addition, you also have the border triangle here, and the highest point of the Netherlands, the Vaalserberg (322.5 m). In 2005, the hill country got its title ‘5 star landscape’ and therefore is part of the most beautiful areas of the Netherlands. In addition, you will find some Natura 2000 nature reserves in the hill country, for example the Geultal (Geuldal). Here, you'll have ideal surroundings for hiking and riding a bike.

Marc Rieu is André and Marjorie Rieu’s eldest son. He was born on 1 November 1978 in Maastricht. He is an artistic talent as well, but instead of music, he concerns himself with the visual arts. He has always been interested in art; as a toddler, he took the catalogues from his parents’ bookshelves to look at all the beautiful pictures. In 1990 – the year of Vincent van Gogh – he decided he wanted to learn more about art. He started studying Art History and Archaeology in Nijmegen and in 2006, he graduated with a thesis on the Romantic period. He also attended several art

classes, as he was intrigued by practicing the art of painting as well. He has been a full-time painter for several years now, and is mainly interested in the representation of landscapes. He calls himself a suggestive illusionist. His paintings are suggestive (dreamy, romantic) and he enchants reality with his brush serving as a wand, hence the phrase “suggestive illusionism”. Since 2010, he has displayed his paintings at his father’s July concerts at Theater aan het Vrijthof. So far, this has been received

ocus on the city’s international quality. Maastricht is perhaps the most international city in the Netherlands. Not only because of its location, in the centre of Europe with borders along Belgium and Germany, but also because of the city’s focus on these foreign countries. The city has come into contact with many cultures over the years, partly due to the French and Spanish conquests. It is a city that today is known across the globe for the establishment of the Euro, among other things. It therefore comes as no surprise that the Kingdom’s Bicentenary celebrations in Maastricht will have a mainly international focus.

It has only been 200 years since the French retreated from the Netherlands and it in turn became an independent Kingdom. In effect, that was only a short time ago. In the country’s journey toward independence, it was by no means certain whether Limburg would become part of that kingdom, as the region had stronger ties with Belgium.

www.johnmullins.nl

Limburg has had a turbulent history, in which its capital Maastricht has played a distinct role. But the toilsome rapprochement between Limburg and the rest of the country is a thing of the past. Today, there is room for friendship among all, although Limburg has still remained somewhat exotic in comparison. The Kingdom’s Bicentenary celebrations, held on 30 August 2014 in Maastricht, will also proudly celebrate the achievements of democracy, freedom and active citizenship. A committee of patronage has been formed with the aim to focus mainly on the international dimension of Maastricht and the Kingdom. It is no coincidence that Maastricht will be underlining the international component during these large-scale celebrations. After all, Maastricht brought forth the European monetary union with the Maastricht Treaty in 1992. In addition, many internationally famous events like TEFAF, Preuvenemint and André Rieu’s concerts, attended by tens of

thousands of fans from all four corners of the earth underscore Maastricht’s international allure. Maastricht University and Zuyd University of Applied Sciences also maintain a solid reputation worldwide. Maastricht has become a byword for all things international. “A committee has been set up of people with a personal connection to the city who are more than involved in terms of the international dimension,” the mayor states. Former Minister and current director of the International Energy Agency Maria van der Hoeven is chair of the Maastricht committee. A great blend of international professionals in all areas, who are passionate about our city.” The committee includes Camiel Eurlings (CEO of KLM), Ralph Hamers (CEO for ING Bank) and Camille Oostwegel (owner of Château-hotels). The Province of Limburg will also be included in the celebrations as well, as well as its border region. www.200jaarkoninkrijk.nl

Orchestra band Sainte Cécile warms up the audience

76 -

Every year, orchestra Sainte Cécile from Eijsden plays at the Vrijthof before André Rieu’s concerts. More than a hundred musicians walk down the square and past the sidewalk cafés and create a great atmosphere. Rieu invites this orchestra band for a reason: only the best is good enough. Sainte Cécile won the

World Music Contest in Kerkrade in the world division for the second time in 2013 and was crowned champion of the Netherlands many times. It can rightfully be said that it is the best orchestra band. At the Vrijthof, they mainly play military marches originating in French-speaking Belgium.
