Horsin’ Around in Lubbock

For those who are familiar with the traditions of Texas Tech University, there is none better than the Masked Rider, an official symbol of the Red Raiders since 1954.
Mounted on a solid black horse, the Masked Rider charges down the sidelines to lead the football team onto the field to begin each home game during the fall. The Masked Rider and horse make countless goodwill appearances at community events throughout the year. However, earlier this year, Texas Tech announced that after 10 years, the horse known as Fearless Champion, would be retiring.
As the official supermarket of Texas Tech and sponsor of the Masked Rider, The United Family was called upon to provide the horse for this iconic tradition. The topic of conversation quickly turned to how the new horse would be named.
“After talking with Texas Tech, we decided that it would be best for Texas Tech alumni and fans to suggest names for the new horse, with a secret committee of former masked riders and other Texas Tech stakeholders making the final selection,” said Nancy Sharp, corporate engagement director for The United Family. “Texas Tech agreed to our idea of opening it up to everyone and making a fun contest out of it.”
It wasn’t long before the Lubbock community and Red Raider Nation made their voices heard. Over the span 30 days, more than 10,000 name suggestions were submitted through the contest portal. The winner of the contest received a $500 gift card.
After the dust settled, one name stood at the top of heap — Centennial Champion, paying homage to Texas Tech’s upcoming 100th birthday.
Some of the honorable mentions that didn’t make the cut included Darth Raider, Horsey McHorseface and Patrick Mahorsey.
Thanks to the hard work of team members, The United Family is able to be involved in such unique ways with their communities all across Texas and New Mexico. So, thank you and go Centennial Champion!
