Putting together the April issue is always a turbulent, yet ultimately satisfying experience. It comes on the heels of the Buyer’s Guide, so work begins early in the year. Coordinating all the stories is always a challenge, but keeping the secret of Speedboarder of the Year from the recipient is especially difficult.

As we crawl our way out of another winter and into spring, it always feels like we’re helping to remove the cobwebs in people’s minds. Of course, I can’t speak for those who live in warmer climates. I know it’s an endless summer.

But trust me when I say that the return of spring signals the end of the endless bummer of not being able to skate outside!

It’s not all print. I’ve also been working hard on getting the Vans Warped Tour Passport Program together. I am delighted to let you know that we are back on the tour. For those who are regular readers of The Fine Print, you know that I occasionally reference people who have made an impact. I met a number of terrific people in Munich at the ISPO trade show. Jeremy Sochin hails from Los Angeles but now makes his home in Switzerland. He runs a skate and snowboard shop called Number.One. It was extraordinary how well we hit it off. Jeremy, I will take you up on your offer to go snowboarding! Another remarkable person I met at the show was Coco Tâche-Berther. Coco publishes 7sky Magazine, and I was completely knocked out by the quality and vision of the publication. Coco takes the idea of action sports and doing good very seriously. She inspired me to think bigger. Coco also lives in Switzerland. So now I can officially announce that whenever I do decide to retire, I’ll be running between California, Switzerland and Toronto. Not sure how I’ll pay for that, but hey, that’s why I call it the Fine Print!

I was looking for a photo that I felt would best capture the feeling of pure skate stoke.

I wanted a photo that would inspire all those people who have been cooped up and are just getting over a bad dose of cabin fever. Finally, spring has arrived and it’s time to get out and ride! I didn’t have to look too far to find the shot I wanted.

Our Brazilian connection Rafael Fazano provided a treasure trove of brilliant photographs. We chose this one because it just oozes soul.

I am pleased to report that we’ve received an extraordinary response to our Longboarding for Peace initiative. In this issue you learn about our programs in Watts, Houston and San Diego. If these stories and photos inspire you, we invite you to step up and contact us. The only thing better than enjoying the stoke of longboarding is sharing it with others who might otherwise never get the opportunity.

Last May I had the distinct pleasure to meet Oscar Loreto Jr. Oscar was born with a congenital birth defect that prevented development of his hands and left leg. Despite these challenges, Oscar took up skateboarding at the age of 14. I know that his story will resonate deeply with you, and we are proud to publish it.

I am also pleased to introduce some brand new columns that I know you’ll find intriguing. Among the new contributors are Longboard Girls Crew and Andrew Yeung from longboardism.com. We’ve got some other surprises, too.

CRASH ’N’ FREEZE RACE CUP By Pierre Gamby For the second year, the two French associations Lyon Longskate Crew and La Familia, led by Brice Bombardier and Vincent Jordana, ran a winter championship called the Crash ’n’ Freeze Race Cup. The idea is very simple: four races throughout the winter, on easy and short downhill slopes with two hairpins. Races are run as outlaw; registration is only 3 euros, and the winner takes all the money. At the end of the four races, a series champion is rewarded.

This year, the winter Challenge has been a blast! Fifty-four riders came from all over France and Switzerland to race and have fun. The Crash ’n’ Freeze is always a good opportunity to meet friends and welcome newbies to the longboarding world.

The first stop of the Crash ’n’ Freeze Cup started in mid-November in Parilly Park (Lyon). Cold rain, a tight track and mud on the road gave a special taste to this race. Two-person heats were run all day, with “winpool” in the morning and finals during the afternoon. Vincent Jordana from La Familia won this first Challenge.

In mid-December we once again met at Champ-Sur-Drac (Grenoble area). Weather was freezing cold, but nothing could stop the riders. To add some extra fun, a fancy dressing contest, the Fulkit Trophy, was held on top of the racing. We saw penguins, pirates, panthers, Scottish folks, Pokemon, hooligans and others shredding! All day long we ran four-person heats, drinking mulled wine between the runs.

Vincent Jordana won the race for the second time in a row, followed by Philippe Dupuy and Vincent Bombastic. As soon as the finals were over, cops came to kick us out. We just smiled, as the event was just over!

The third stop of the series was in Mont Brouilly, in the middle of the Beaujolais vineyards. The road was fast, steep, wet and muddy. The second left-hand corner was a massive “carnage corner,” with more crashes than clean runs! The biggest challenge was to brake enough and choose a good line to stay on the board. Many challengers were out early in the race. Young rider Yanis Markarian took his first win, followed by Cedric Menez and Jean-Sebastien Dennebouy.

The last race of the Challenge was held in mid-February in Nantes-en-Ratier (Grenoble area). Conditions were very special, as there was a huge amount of fresh snow all around the place, making the landscape breathtaking. The sun was shining, the road was dry and the riders were more motivated than ever! The Swiss crew came in force. We all had many warm-up runs in the morning, racing friends for fun in a pure Crash ’n’ Freeze friendly spirit. Again runs were held in a four-person heat format with winpool qualifications. Nicolas Robert from Switzerland and Team 9.81/DTC made the best of the conditions to win the race, closely followed by Vincent Bombastic and Bruno Fuch.

The Crash ’n’ Freeze was a huge success this year. These easy-to-set races are an excellent way to promote longboarding: Chosen tracks are fun for every skill level; registration is cheap; it keeps riders entertained during the winter times; and it’s a perfect excuse to catch up with friends.

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN LONGBOARD DANCE?

Dancers from all over Europe came to participate.

Multiple disciplines were represented, including dance, trick and hippie jump – all of them held under the light show of a concert hall that is usually used for high-voltage ambience. Another big hall had a bright area for people of all levels to freely ride and meet.

In the Hippie Jump contest, Steffen Kstr from Germany and Donkey Town custom longboards had never ridden a skateboard before. The bar was set at 1.50m (4.92 ), and after multiple attempts he was not able to land it. As the host was announcing the end of the event, the crowd started to scream. Without telling anyone, Steffen made one last attempt – and made it!

During the preparation for the Dancing final, the Nose Manual contest was won by Luutse Brouwer from The Netherlands, riding for Simple and The Boardfather.

only the three best riders remained, all from different countries: Andrei Churakov from Belgium; Lotfi Lamaali from France; and Luutse Brouwer, the Dutch favorite.

These three are not used to competing with each other,

so that made the final extra exciting. After two 90second rounds, everyone was wondering who was going to be on the highest step on the podium. The judges had a difficult job because each style is really different and technically all three longboarders were impressive.

The final results of the Dancing contest were: 1. Lotfi Lamaali (FR) – Loaded, Orangatang 2. Andrei Churakov (BE) – Original 3. Luutse Brouwer (NL) – Simple, The Boardfather When the results of all the events were combined, the Netherlands and France were tied for the country title. So both countries had to select one rider for one best trick. It was not surprising these riders were Lotfi and Luutse. Lotfi Lamaali convincingly claimed the victory with his trick, and thereby France won the country contest – and the golden exchange trophy board!

ROAROCKIT SWAP MEET More than 300 people turned out for sixth annual Swap Meet in Toronto on March 24.

The board sports enthusiasts at WLC have carved out a niche organizing events specifically for women.

Last year saw the first event of this kind, a five-day longboarding event in sunny Slovenia, dedicated to the practice of skateboarding, from downhill to sliding to dancing. The camp was a tremendous success and sparked interest all around the world – a sign that there are plenty of women keen to get on board out there. The WLC crew aim to create a relaxed, noncompetitive and nonjudgmental atmosphere, giving participants the opportunity to explore their limits in a safe environment under experienced, hands-on guidance. The complete package caters to anybody from total beginner to the more seasoned rider and includes a daily yoga practice to round off a well-designed event schedule. Due to high demand, two camps will take place in 2013, this time in the beautiful surroundings of Alsace, France. The events will take place from May 12-17 and May 19-24, respectively. FREESTYLE: NOT IN KANSAS ANYMORE

I recently went to see the movie OZ the Great and Powerful and was momentarily stepped back in time, singing along with Munchkins and skipping down the yellow brick road. During the beginning B&W sequence, set in the dusty flatlands of Kansas, I remembered I had once lived in a small town in Arkansas called Pine Bluff, where the only hill in town was the delivery ramp at the post office. The world is full of similar cities that are as flat as a pancake, not offering much in the way of skating terrain, and yet one form of skateboarding is thriving: flatland freestyle. No, we’re definitely not in Kansas anymore, as freestyle has gone global. It’s alive and well in São Paulo, Brazil, and Schweinfurt, Germany, and it’s gaining popularity from Shizuoka, Japan, to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from Skokloster, Sweden, to Vancouver, Canada, and beyond.

Gone are the days of tic-tacs, end-overs and walking the dog. The sport of freestyle has evolved over the past 30 years, and Spain’s Kilian Martin and other like-minded skaters are moving freestyle into the future. Just visit YouTube and type in Kilian Martin’s name and prepare to be wowed. At last year’s World Freestyle Round-Up, independent filmmaker Brett Novak premiered his short film entitled Altered Route featuring Martin skating an abandoned water park; to date that video alone has been viewed more than 1.25 million times.

Another skater who sleeps and breathes skating is Günter Mokulys from Berlin, Germany. Just log onto his website (skateboardbusiness.de) and see what I mean. Talk about German precision! Günter has won the World Freestyle Championships nine times,

and like Kilian he is always Rene Shigueto. creating new, innovative Photo: Felipe Francisco moves. Then there’s Darryl Grogan from L.A. with his English handstands and a quiver full of rolling tricks, including lots of “impossible” variations that blow the mind. An up-and-coming amateur is Takashi Suzuki from Japan, whose smooth skating style makes every move look effortless. His talent of linking one trick to another is something most other skaters only dream about.

Now let’s head south of the equator to one of the hotbeds of freestyle skateboarding, São Paulo, Brazil. I have always had a special interest in Brazilian skaters; and in 1986, when I organized the Transworld Skateboard Championships at EXPO 86 in Vancouver, the Brazilian team camped out in my backyard. To be stuck on a plane for 14 hours and travel more than 6,800 miles on your own dime seems crazy, and yet Rene Shigueto (who finished third at last year’s World RoundUp) and the rest of the gang from Brazil are once again heading to Cloverdale, British Columbia, Canada, to compete in the 2nd Annual World Freestyle Round-Up. That’s right, it’s official: We are once again Rounding-Up the top pro and amateur freestyle skateboarders from around the globe to compete at the World Freestyle Round-Up. There’s $10,000 in prize money to be won, plus prizes for the amateur skaters and lots of trophies to be taken home as well. The four-day event will be held at the Cloverdale Rodeo & Country Fair, a few miles east of Vancouver, from May 1720, 2013. More than 77,000 people attended the annual Rodeo and Fair last year, making it an ideal high-profile location for this contest. If you missed all the action last year, be sure to be in attendance this year to watch Kilian, Günter, Darryl, Takashi, Rene and 30-plus other freestyle skaters. WE’RE THRILLED TO ANNOUNCE THAT from now on Longboard Girls Crew will have its own section in Concrete Wave. We will use this space to share what’s going on not only in the female longboard world but in the sports, arts and music world from our personal point of view. We may occasionally use it to make fun of things, mostly ourselves.

Before making fun of anyone, we want to take a minute to talk about the project we’re proudest to be involved in: Skateistan. For those of you who don’t know it, Skateistan is a

nonprofit organization that provides education think that? Katie Neilson recovered from her to children in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Cam- injury and killed it in the first race she attended bodia through skateboarding since 2007. in Puerto Rico some weeks ago. She’s a beast.

Skateistan is nonpolitical, independent and inclusive of all ethnicities, religions and social backgrounds. They provide access to education, focusing specially on girls and working children.

The documentary film Skateistan The Movie follows Skateistan and its founders through the year 2009, documenting their daily struggle to break down social, gender and ethnic barriers between the children of a war-torn country.

We feel honored to be able Afghan girls in Skateistan The Movie. to put together the premiere for Skateistan The Movie in Spain. The event will be on May 18, 2013, in Madrid. The chosen place is CaixaForum, a modern art gallery in the center of Madrid that was constructed by the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron from 2001 to 2007. It’s one of Madrid’s iconic art spaces. The sports website Loving Sports is covering most of the event expenses along with the CaixaForum Foundation. The event is also sponsored by Longboarding For Peace and co-hosted with Asiplanchaba, the Spanish female board sports association.

We always say that there is nothing bigger for us than having encouraged so many girls around the world to start skating. Now we can honestly say that being able to help or contribute in projects like this or Longboarding for Peace, where you actually know you’re contributing in making a change, is ridiculously rewarding. We’re getting together and hosting a longboarding clinic for girls. (Of course boys are welcome!) We’re having music, picnics, skate contests and loads of fun. Loaded Boards was kind enough to get their Uruguayan riders to Buenos Aires to make the South American girl stoke even bigger.

A QUESTION OF BALANCE ON AND OFF THE BOARD!

By SHARNA FLORENCE, Specialty Fitness Trainer & Leader s a specialty fitness trainer, my expertise lies in coaching the understanding and then the proper usage of your body from a strength and balance perspective.

I am confident that you are fully aware of how to stay on your boards, but if you can become a bit more conscious of your strength and balance off the board in day-to-day activities, you’ll be amazed at how you will feel when you get back on!

Here’s a quick visual way to think of your physical being (the one we so take for granted, until something happens): Picture your body as a skeleton. Our bone structure is both top- and bottom-heavy, held together in the middle by only a few vertebrae! This means that there are no bones across the entire front in the middle of your body (at your stomach).

So your lower back has a major job to hold it all together, and if your abs are not strong, you can experience lower back pain. (Fig. A)

PROBLEM: Your abs have to be “engaged” or “activated” to stabilize your lower back; if they’re not, your back takes on too much pressure.

PROBLEM: Most people are still doing crunches for the abs, which stretches the back muscles, weakening the back and straining the neck and shoulders in a position we don’t want to enhance. This results in rounded, forward shoulders. (Fig. B) SOLUTION: Strengthen your core. Core muscles are like the pilot of an airplane — the control center! Core consists of not just the abdominals, but the abs + back + obliques. All three are your core muscles. All three have to work together to keep your spinal cord safe and strong. This is a team effort. Since the nerves run down the center of your spine, you’d better be good to it and treat it with respect! The only way to strengthen your spine is really to maintain and strengthen it in its natural shape or “neutral position.” (Fig. C1 and C2)

PROBLEM: If your body is in poor posture, then you cannot properly activate your core and it can’t function properly.

SOLUTION: Move your skeleton into a better posture position; then your muscles will be able to activate better and strengthen your core in its entirety.

SOLUTION: When (a) your posture is better, then (b) you can actually strengthen your core properly, and then (c) you improve your balance!

Great posture starts with your head! You have to decide to want to adjust your habits. It’s very easy to slouch and “not think” about your every move.

REMEMBER THIS: We get better and better at things the more we do them. These are habits — good and bad ones!

Stand with your head, shoulders and butt against a wall, with your feet one step in front of the wall. Place your hand in the space between the wall and your lower back. Is there any space? There should be a slight curve. Now — laugh and feel your core tighten.

Step away from the wall, and keep that firm abdominal and back tightening (to maintain your neutral spine curve).

The key to this stance is to imagine that the wall is still behind you, and that you’re keeping your head, shoulders and butt against it all the time.

This is better posture. (Fig. D) You have that magic wall with you always.

Walk, sit, drive, ride, study, stand … all with your magic wall that’s with you everywhere you go.

You will start moving with better alignment over time, have less back pain and look more fit.

PROBLEM: Head-forward habits — when you text, work on your computer, walk with a knapsack, etc.

TRY THIS: Put your index finger on your earlobe and your thumb on the top of your shoulder. Do they line up?

Is your ear over your shoulder? Or are your ears in front of your shoulders? (Fig. E)

FACT: For every inch (2.5 cm) that your ears are in front of the center of your shoulders, your spine has to carry an extra 10 lbs. of pressure — from your head (it weighs on average 18 lbs!), down your neck, all the way down your spine!

That’s a lot of pulling and straining on your spinal cord.

SOLUTION: Think of this next time you carry a heavy knapsack on your shoulders and your head pushes forward, pulling your ears forward in front of your shoulders. Wear your knapsack on both shoulders (it’s not nerdy, and your neck and back will thank you later!) and open your chest, pulling your shoulder blades down your back, and rotate your shoulders open.

SOLUTION: When you use your phone, hold it up higher in front of you to keep you from looking down and bringing your head, neck and shoulders forward with you.

REMEMBER: The more you do something, the better you get at it — agreed? The more you practice your skills the better you get. So … the more you practice standing with better posture, the better it gets, and the more balance you’ll have.

Be a bit more conscious of your head over your butt. Remind yourself a few times every day, and it’ll start to become a more unconscious habit. CW Looking forward to enlightening you on “Opposition Strengthens” in the next issue!

“I don’t want to do an interview with you.”

— James Kelly Matt Kienzle: I wrote out a list of questions for my roommate, James Kelly. That’s the response I received. The interview was disguised as an online article for skatehousemedia.com, a website all of my roommates help run, including James. I don’t know why he declined the interview. If you know James, you know he is not particularly known for his work ethic. When I was living at Skatehouse, a big day for James was getting all of his laundry done and getting a shave and shower in. Don’t get me wrong, James is a good kid, but he gets paid to skate and does a damn good job at that.

I’ve spent the past couple years skating downhill all over the world with him. That means he is doing his job, right?

Jon Caften: When we set out to do this article, Matt, my fellow staff writer at Concrete Wave, was supposed to conduct the interview incognito. It made the most sense, right? They are roommates, after all. The

thing is, Matt has been traveling extensively and is currently in Japan doing a CW article on Ben Dub, Amané Kishida and Gabe Gwynne, and before that he was in New Zealand for the Intense D-Cents tour.

James, on the other hand, has been winning races and traveling on his own, so he had not been answering Matt’s questions in a timely manner. Matt and I were later to find out, as you read above, that James doesn’t necessarily give a s--- what Matt wants.

Roommates for sure.

Matt K: James does well at events, places well at races and stays up late at the party.

He is always a top contender no matter what the course is. Bricin “Striker” Lyons gave him the nickname “The American Dream.”

Jon C: A big endorsement, too! The Coast Longboarding local scene has so much talent in its pool that it has been possible for Canada to ignore the existence of downhill skaters from anywhere else in the world for virtually the entire 2000s.

Matt K: He is living it, though – the dream, that is. Flights are paid for and everything is lined up; James is there to knock ’em down. He is a paid skater, paid to skate. He’s comfortable. He’s got it made.

Jon C: Here is the thing, though: Matt has only been recently hired on at Concrete Wave, and he told James, of course. They are roommates after all. And the first words that came out of James’ mouth were, “Matt, you should tell Brooke to make me Speedboarder of the Year.” OK, James, here it is.

You’re Speedboarder of the Year – but only because you asked for it. Congratulations.

Matt K: “Speedboarder of the Year: James Kelly.” Has a weird ring to it. I laughed my ass off for a minute, because he had been doing next to nothing around the house because of a dislocated shoulder. I figured someone else had already been lined up before Caften even told me he was inked for the spot. I don’t know who else could deserve it, if we’re counting points; Switzer and Dalua already won so they’re out. But

f--- points. Good for James, He did pretty damn good on the racing circuit this year. More importantly, he’s been pushing what kids have been calling freeriding for years now.

“Freeriding,” that’s where the fun is at. I’m glad a racer didn’t take the title this year. I’ll keep James in the non-racer class until I’ve taken more runs with him on closed roads instead of open ones.

Jon C: In April 2008 an innocuous thread started on the Silverfish Longboarding forum that made sense to virtually nobody: “James Kelly: A Longboarding Phenom??? or a washed up hack.” For the next three years this thread was one of the most bizarre public displays of how a bunch of Internet trolls can build up and chew apart a skater’s meteoric career ... and then all of a sudden in 2011 it just stopped and went dead. The display became anything but innocuous. Of course we know that over the 12 months that followed James really did prove to the world of downhill skateboarding that he is a “phenom,” with multiple climbs to the top of the podium in racing, incredible video parts and a barrage of photos from all over the place that could be used in a textbook on style. Controversial racing etiquette aside, anyone who studies the flow and lines racers take realizes that James is in a world of his own. He seems far more comfortable than virtually everyone else on the hill.

Matt K: I’d put him in the longboard phenomenon category for sure. He’s a really competitive kid; you may have noticed from the several racing incidents he has had in the past couple years. He may seem very nonchalant, but he takes things seriously.

His recent history is pretty well known. James moved down to Los Angeles from Petaluma (Northern California) to work for Loaded/Orangatang. After a couple months of him working there, he and Louis Pilloni were put on payroll to skate. Since then, James has been a professional downhill skateboarder. The old Skatehouse was a small two-bedroom apartment where Louis, James and Brent “Dubes” Dubendorff all lived. When that lease ended, that same small space was inhabited by James, Louis, Max Dubler, Brian Peck, myself, Kody Noble and Pat Schep.

BEHIND EVERY SKATER, AT SOME POINT, WAS A SUPPORTIVE ADULT. That’s something you don’t often see or acknowledge while lost in the glossy pages of cool magazines. Well, those kids didn’t just start out that way. Here are some TRUE stories that explain what it’s like to raise skaters.

Almost daily, my teenage sons come home from school and go right to the Internet to ogle things like boards and bushings before they do their homework. Some days they tell me they’re going out for a skate because it’s too nice outside not to skate. It’s so bad that there are times when I wonder if there is something wrong with them and say things like, “Do you guys ever think about girls?” “Yeah, we do, Mom,” they reply, shuffling past me and onto the street. “We just don’t tell you!”

I am fully aware that there are worse obsessions my kids could have (computer games, XBox or just plain getting stoned), so I want to be clear that I’m not complaining. In fact, I’ve spent a significant amount of time as their accomplice and

am guilty of encouraging numerous activities that I am probably going to get in trouble for disclosing here and using my real name. So, as we know, skating is not a crime, but here are some offenses in the name of the sport: Guilty of reckless driving and endangering children After many months of perfecting their skills, my boys got bored with the hill in front of our house.

Without realizing it, I’d find myself scouting out new terrain for them as I drove to work. One place was a large office parking lot complete with speed bumps, ramps and light poles. One weekend morning when the lot was empty, I tied two ropes to the trunk of the car and we set off.

The boys headed downhill, jumping the speed bumps, slaloming through the light poles and racing each other on the ramps. Each time they cheered, “That was awesome!” At the bottom, they grabbed onto the ropes and I towed them back up — but not without whipping them back

and forth and zigzagging up the hill; perfecting the art of skitching. Going up turned out to be as much fun as going down. With great whoops of joy and encouragement from my rolling cargo, I was clearly having as much fun watching their shenanigans as they were. Luckily, the police never came, and they have since learned to push back up the hills on their own without ropes.

Guilty of intimidating and menacing youth My son Henry started skateboarding in parks when he was 5. During these formative years he also learned the unspoken rules of park etiquette and got along quite well with a motley assortment of amazing skaters. He taught me that it’s just not cool to talk or express my enthusiasm and that merely a nod or a tapping on my watch was sufficient to indicate it was time to go home.

set under the shadows of Interstate 95, and a stone’s throw from the airport and shipping terminals. FDR is loud. It booms constantly with the echoes of 18-wheelers and 747s. FDR is dirty and completely resplendent with some of the most outrageous graffiti around (“Bikers suck d—-!”

“Scum pay the toll!” “Viva Viagra!” “FDR or DIE”).

In the beginning I would only take Henry early in the morning when it was empty. As time went on he could hold his own when the older skaters showed up. Then one day he was “bullied” by some 20-somethings. I was perched on the side and couldn’t hear what the four kids were saying to him, but I saw my son shirking away as they pointed and yelled at him. Suddenly my Mommy instincts went into overdrive.

But wait! It’s not cool to interfere with your kid at FDR! What do I do? If I stayed out of the way and let these jerks push him around, would he lose his confidence to skate here? If I spoke up, would he be mad at me and accuse me of coddling him? I was intimidated by these guys, too.

I came to a quick resolution: Even though they were bigger than me, I was still 20 years older.

Even though they were acting cooler than me, I knew I had my own reserves of “cool” to harness.

So I faked being calm, although inside of me I was not. I faked being threatening, because the inside of me was not. I slid down into the bowl, and some voice that came from me said to the Head Jerk, “Hey! Did you tell my kid he can’t skate here?” The Jerk said, “Well, we just don’t want him to get hurt, and we’re filming each other.” So the Fake Cool Mom inside me said, “Dude, you were once little and skated here. He can skate here just fine! He’ll stay out of your way if you stay out of his. You got a problem with that?” And they walked away as I told Henry, “You just keep skating and stay out of their way.” And he did! He skated with confidence — the one I had faked but now owned.

Guilty of reckless endangerment of children and lying to police officers I was driving down Presidential Boulevard one day with my other son, Jack. This is a very busy four-lane thoroughfare that connects the suburbs to the city. It has tremendous curves and a steady decline that goes on for at least a mile.

“Wow”, Jack remarked. “ Do you think we could ever skate this?” I thought about it as cars zoomed by us and gave him my “when Hell freezes over” reply. He pushed the issue for the next few months every time we drove that route.

Eventually, my defenses wore down and I began to give it some serious thought. When would this busy road ever be clear? That’s easy — when no one was going to work or school or getting up early. “ OK,” I said, sort of as a joke, “there’s only one day, and it’s a slim chance at that: New Year’s Day at 6 in the morning — if the street is dry.”

The plot thickened.We would need a car behind us and a car in front to create a safe zone for the riders. The boys started scheming, and we soon were able to recruit our friend Bob and his son, Aidan. Bob was always game for my crazy exploits and shared my enthusiasm for adventure. When the weather forecast was clear and it looked like our escapade was actually going to happen, my husband volunteered to be the cameraman.

At 5:55 a.m. on Jan. 1, our excited and scared caravan approached the targeted hill. Presidential Boulevard was eerily quiet, and it felt surreal to be on the top of this typically busy road only to have it wide open to us. The boys were quickly putting on their gloves and helmets, since we were not sure how long our “fun” would last. I said, “We will get stopped by the police, you know. Are you guys prepared for that?” They nodded that they were. Bob and I were already giddy and cracked up when we rehearsed that our excuse to the police would be, “We were shooting a movie!”

We rolled out: me driving in front with the hazard lights on; my husband cramped in the back, camera on; the three boys skating; then Bob following with his lights and hazards on.

The boys sailed down the hill, totally pumped and in awe that we were actually pulling this off.

We passed no cars and decided to go for another run. Each run felt like stolen time, and we continued to gamble for one more. Within an hour we had done six runs and the sky was beginning to lighten. A few cars began driving on the road, and the two older boys felt that they had tempted fate enough and wanted to end on a good note. But Henry wanted to beat his speed and asked to do one last bomb, which we indulged. As he neared the last curve, lo and behold, a police car appeared, glimpsing what must have been a startling sight. “Oh, s—-, the cops,” said Jack. No sooner had he spoken than the police car screeched into a 180, flashed its lights and hit the siren, pulling all of us over.

The officer was aghast. He stammered at me, “This is so dangerous! This is a busy street!

There are cars going very fast here. Your children could get hurt!” Bob walked up and looked at the officer and with a straight face and said, “We were making a movie,” at which point Henry and I looked down at the ground to control our laughter. The officer continued his lecture and told us that there were parks available in the community for skateboarding, and we listened as if this was new information we hadn’t considered and apologized for our reckless activities.

At this point, skating is an intrinsic part of our family life. It brings us to new places and pushes my kids to become better people. In spite of some seemingly dangerous exploits, the joys it has given us are something I’m always happy to defend, even in the court of law. CW

WHY I DO WHAT I DO

By JASON SALFI Comet Skateboards I’M PASSIONATE ABOUT SKATEBOARDING. It gives me the sense that I can move forward, escape the status quo. It has taught me what it is like to envision something, practice it and make it happen — it feeds my need to make progress. As I skate, conventional social concerns fall away and I feel powerful. When we’re young, we’re told how the world works and how we must behave in it, until we find that we must break out in order to establish our own characters. I’m a natural-born rule-breaker — I skate to smash outmoded ways and usher in new ones.

A sense of urgency drives what I do at Comet Skateboards. Humans’ current path is not sustainable; it threatens the continued existence of a huge number of the planet’s species, including our own. The massive corporate and governmental systems we’ve developed are pushing us in the wrong direction. I know that we can do better. I do what I do because too many societies are in chaos, too many children are dying from drinking unsanitary water, too many people lack basic food and shelter. As skateboarders – as iconoclasts, artists and leaders that hold creativity, passion and the spirit of DIY in the highest regard — we can change this.

A conventional skateboard is made of internationally traded commodities: timber, metals, petroleum. These commodities are chemically altered, processed, transported and transformed into the vehicles that enable us to roll down the road happily. All this takes massive amounts of energy, industry, government and money. In this sense the typical skateboard is no different from any other consumer product.

If our industry is to thrive, we need to change and progress. With the support of our customers, we can develop a model to change the world that gives us a chance to thrive as humans, in health and coexistence with the planet’s other species.

Third-party verification shows that you are serious and not just paying lip service to an important movement. Anything short of that is status quo. I do what I do because it is time to bury the status quo and change the way we do business. I do what I do because 20 years from now, kids will look back and say: “Was there really a time when people made stuff that poisoned the earth and treated people unfairly to make money off of skateboarders?” CW

SHOP TEAM PROFILES Daddies Board Shop has been in the forefront of the global longboard scene for a long time. We wanted to know what they are doing to push the scene and how their team plays a part in it. We spoke with Daddies team manager Katie Neilson and her team.

DADDIES BOARD SHOP TEAM

LOCAL SKATE SHOPS play an important role in influencing both the local and the global longboard scene. The shops’ support does not end with the gear they supply; some of the most important work the shops do is in the support of their longboard teams. This fuels riders, and in turn these riders push the industry.

It’s every kid’s dream to one day be a part of the shop team. This is the first step in getting

skilled longboarders on the right track by accepting them into the center of the culture.

Shop teams do not come with little expense; owners sacrifice a lot to support these riders, sometimes with very little return. Let’s look behind the scenes at how and why a team is formed, and what kind of influence it has on the riders. This is the first in a series that takes a closer look at the shop team culture.

Katie, as the new dedicated team manager, what are some changes you are making this season? Do you have a goal or outlook in mind for the team?

Katie: Super stoked to be on board as the team manager. Daddies got a new owner a little while back, and he decided it was worthwhile to dedicate someone responsible for keeping track of the team. As for a vision, I guess I just want to build a truly international team that reflects all our energy at home. We all have a bit of a silly attitude when it comes to things around the shop, so I want to find some cool riders in different places that reflect that. I don’t know who, I guess just people I naturally collaborate with, people that skate hard, party like champs and have a good attitude. Between am and pro, I have made space for 30 riders; the lineup isn’t full and I’m in no rush to fill it. Reality is, I want to see what some of the existing riders are capable of this year.

Maybe some pros will become ams, maybe some ams will become pros; maybe I’ll discover the best skater in the universe hiding in a jungle somewhere — who knows. We have put a lot of cool systems in place that allow our riders to shoot for the stars this year, so the only thing I can do is lead by example in my own riding, stay on track with my own media submissions and see how it works out for everyone else. I can send reminders and suggestions, but it’s up to them to make it happen.

Daddies has always been great at supporting a wide range of riders and skill levels to keep pushing the sport. What are your different levels of the team?

Right now the team features a lot of ambassadors/flow riders that exist through hookups that the old owners gave them. They are all great, friendly people ranging from kids to adults, living in many different places around the world. They all have a voice in their community one way or another, and I wanted to make an effort to keep them involved as I took over. I’ve set aside anywhere from a discount to an equipment budget for each of them and provided a way they can earn more credits through media links on content that they’ve created. As for the Pro Team, they are generally all riders hooked up with other companies as well, most traveling internationally with the help of not only us but

their other supporters as well. We hook each of them up with a little bit of monthly cash to keep the water bill paid or whatever, a travel budget for the year, incentives to make some extra cash with media projects and some equipment from the shop if they end up needing it as well.

Most often shops sponsor kids in their local area; why does Daddies reach so far beyond their borders to sponsor people overseas?

Daddies hooks up a bunch of people in the local Portland area, but the reality is, we are an international company. We want an international community representing us.

What are some big events this season that the team will be attending?

We are hoping to look into throwing a signature event of our own this year, so that would be amazing if we could pull that off. We are super stoked about getting involved in something like a Daddies signature event, whether it be a race, freeride or slide jam — who knows. Otherwise, we are going to be everywhere! We will have riders on the World Cup schedule, riders at freerides up and down every coast and riders in outlaws on a dangerous road near you! This is also probably a good time to mention that we are going to be sponsoring 100 slide jams this year, so if you and your buddies are planning on throwing a jam, hit us up and we’ll send you some swag to pass out! How can a rider get on your team?

Well, people can always send something in to team@daddiesboardshop.com and it will make it to us, but I want to find some organic connections this year, take advantage of my

international situation and make sure that the help we are able to offer makes it into some really great hands. I will never ignore a bangin’ video, though; obviously I can’t meet every cool, deserving person in this world face to face.

Now to hear from the team. We spoke with Marisa Nuñez from Lima, Peru, and Ishtar Bäcklund from Stockholm, Sweden.

What is the most important part of being on the shop team?

Marisa: I think that the most important part is to represent them in the right way. As a team rider, you are responsible for your actions and the way you present yourself at events. Of course it’s just as important to have fun, but we need to remember we are professionals if we are supported by a big skate company like Daddies.

What did getting on the team mean for you?

Ishtar: Getting on the Daddies team was a confidence boost. Recognition for my riding and stoke makes me want to keep on doing what I love and get better at it. I ride for fun, for the love and joy. I never really cared about sponsorships when I started skating, I have always made sure to make my own happiness by working hard for the things I feel are worth working for. The help they support me with makes it easier to keep on skating and exploring the world. I’m so thankful! They are always stoked for all the things I want to do, and I’m stoked to be a part of the team.

What do you feel is your responsibility as a rider on the team?

Marisa: I feel like it’s my responsibility as a team rider to spread the skate stoke to other

girl riders as well as other riders in general.

Possibly try to make people who don’t know much about it understand that there is professionalism in our sport.

Have there been any challenges for you in working on an international level with longboarding?

Ishtar: Since I started skating I have always found my local shop to be my home. I love them for the support they gave me when I started; hanging out at the shop every day with the crew and just having fun was great! I miss them a lot. Since I started traveling, things of course changed; living on the road makes it hard to keep the same feeling with the crew that you share when you’re actually there with the mates.

Now that you’re on an international team but live so far from the rest of them, what is it like to connect with this new crew?

Ishtar: Because I don’t live in the States, I mostly meet my teammates at races. Once there, I love the vibe and connection that we share. For a weekend we can be somewhat of a crew. It’s kind of like an extra bond. The Daddies team has such a wild range of rad and talented skaters; being a part of this is so much fun! Meeting up in different parts of the world and hosting events with my teammates is something I really like.

It is clear that being on the Daddies Board Shop team means more than just a shop hookup; it is a family dynamic. These like-minded individuals come from different parts of the world, but one thing they all hold in common is their attitude and love for longboarding. CW

The Importance of

ATTITUDE THE LAST FEW YEARS OF LONGBOARDING, for the most part, have developed a fairly positive outlook on the way each rider decides to perceive the sport. Most companies have done a great job of inspiring riders of all ages and backgrounds to jump on a board and have fun with it. The way I see it, the image of longboarding itself was formed, and eventually molded, by an easygoing, positive attitude geared toward skating with your friends and riding the way that suits you best. Sadly, though, I’m starting to see a change in the way this new longboarding generation decides to act.

I’m not sure whether it’s the explosion in social networking, or if it’s just the way my generation is, but it seems as though a new passive-aggressive, competitive mindset is starting to take over. Suddenly kids are relentlessly scrutinizing videos, groups, companies, products and even riders more than ever. And they’re doing it all in a way that is public, yet detached. Now, don’t get me wrong, I think competition is great for any kind of progression, but I also think there is a time and a place for it.

Sitting at home on your computer engaged in a keyboard battle is not one of them.

What I seem to be noticing, now more than ever, is that kids are starting to pick sides. Certain companies, groups and riding styles are no longer being given a chance to earn respect. It seems like if you want to gain exposure or be liked by the community, you need to ride a certain way, on a certain setup. Otherwise your efforts will be mocked. The creativity that used to be so strong in the longboarding community is now being funneled through a more narrow view, and I think it can have a very negative impact on the growth of the sport.

My theory is that if the longboard community works on developing a wide range of riding styles, then the sport will appeal to a wider audience of people; this will eventually contribute to growth in every area of the sport. I can’t speak for everyone else, but I want this sport to keep growing. I want the

top riders to be recognized for their talent, for all companies to succeed, and for the sport to be more highly acknowledged around the world. I feel that the best way to do that is with a positive attitude focused on encouraging anyone who loves the sport. When you bring it back to the Adam and Adam videos, the Loaded Challenge series or the trick tips with Louis Pilloni, you’ll notice that they had this kind of attitude. It was how I got involved in longboarding, and I’m sure there are many others like me.

downsides to having a positive attitude, there are other advantages as well. What seems to be a big problem in my community is the issue of spots being banned. From what I’ve seen, this has created a lot of unrest and blame, and riders are starting to become worried that they might lose their favorite hills. Obviously, the best way to stop this from happening would be to keep your spots hidden and secret, but that can only last for so long. It’s almost inevitable that other riders will find your secret hill and want to ride it. This is a very delicate issue. It’s very hard to prove that a certain group of riders deserves to ride a spot while another doesn’t; and even if you can, there is nothing enforcing those rules.

Excluding certain riders and groups is just asking for trouble.

The only way to really secure a spot is to talk to your city council or government and help them change their perspective with regard to their image of skateboarding. This obviously cannot be done with a negative attitude. The only way a town is going to legalize spots is if they truly believe the people riding them are going to be safe and responsible. This means you need to respect the neighborhood you’re riding in and all the rules of the road. Always spot blind corners and be sure to stay in your lane. And don’t cause disturbances or provoke any kind of automotive interferences.

Even with that done, you may still face some problems. Some city councils are not willing to listen to teenage skateboarders, but this doesn’t mean you should act any differently. If you are riding in spots that are currently illegal, if anything, you need to try even harder not to disturb the neighborhood or provoke home owners to call you in. The best thing you can do in all these situations is to be respectful.

I hope that my generation can relate to what I’m saying and that we can start to shift our attitude and perspective back to how it used to be. While the sport continues to grow and new riders start occupying the hills, I can only ask that we give them the same opportunity to progress that I was given, while at the same time teaching them to ride safely with the community. I think there is room for improvement in many areas of the sport, and that we can realistically make those improvements by a collective change in attitude. CW

THE SOUND OF POLYURETHANE SKATE WHEELS roaring down the street, the sharp snap of a tail slapping the concrete, the sound of silence that follows an ollie down a staircase: These should all be music to my ears, but they aren’t. Instead, I stop, listen and then walk away deprived.

I’m 34 and haven’t skated for about three years. Yes, it’s sad, and there is no excuse. Still, hear me out. The last time I started to skate again after a two-year layoff, I learned that I can’t go hard anymore. Even though my mind was filled with the same size gaps and bluntslides, my body rejected them after bailing hard and paying the price. So here I stand, envious of the skaters making music to my ears.

I was determined to buy a longboard and bring it with me to the country where I am living for a year: Nicaragua. I did the research, literally and via the Internet. Still, I arrived in this developing country boardless.

When a person moves to another country, the list of things to bring is endless: peanut butter, toiletries, books, magazines, clothes, electronics, etc. Buying the supplies for a year out of the country also means dropping wads of dough, and that is why my longboard was bumped from the list. It was my own fault. My wife was dead set on buying me the longboard I had longingly been dreaming about for our anniversary, but I fought it.

“It’s too expensive and we need the money for Nicaragua,” I argued.

In the end I talked her out of it. And there I was, boardless in Nicaragua.

Even skating on the locals' front stoops isn't frowned upon.

THE REVELATION Nicaragua, a small country in the heart of Central America, is not known to be a skating mecca.

Still, the city we live in, Estelí, is painted with skating hot spots. It is only lacking the boards and skaters to skate them. I don’t know how many times I have gawked at a ledge, gap or staircase and said, “Look at this; it’s perfect. If I only had a board and some wax.” After taking note of super skate spots, I regretted my neglecting the one important factor, a board.

Why the neglect?

Was it because I was getting older and the last time I started skating my body had rebelled against the slams at the all-concrete skatepark?

It wasn’t only the sweet spots in this Third World country that bit into my skateboarding subconscious; it was also the culture. In Nicaragua there are rules and laws, but they are loosely enforced.

This is not a good thing. It means more noise, chaos, stealing and abuse of personal rights. At the same time it lends its hand to being a skater. Drunks sleep on the streets, or right in front of your door, people make as much noise as they like with no consequence, and cars, bicyclists and pedestrians follow only their own ideas. The point being: A skater could skate anywhere and not be kicked out.

Here skateboarding is not a crime. It’s not even a thought that has entered the local citizens’ minds. They are so tolerant that skating on their front steps would only provide them with some entertainment.

Skateboarding is NOT a crime in Nicaragua.

THE START And so it all began. I needed a board, and more specifically a longboard. One of the first problems I had to overcome is that I didn’t know a thing about longboards. I had never set foot on one. I thought it could not be much different than a standard-sized deck, the kind my feet felt right at home on.

I started searching on the Internet.

Where else would a guy look to find out more about longboards? I had been digging the stuff I saw in Concrete Wave, but I needed to learn more. I started by watching some YouTube videos, and man, skaters were doing some gnarly stuff on longboards.

I was particularly impressed with the videos of Jeremy Peckham, Keith Capizzi and Yancey Meyer.

Kickflips, heelflips, five-o’s ... they are all in my blood. There is no getting them out, whether I can pull the stuff off anymore or not. The videos helped me to decide that I wanted a deck on which I could do some of the standard tricks. It needed concave, a tail and a nose and couldn’t be too long. And I liked the looks of a pool deck more than the other longboards.

The question was, could I even get a longboard to Nicaragua? And how much was it going to cost?

I started checking out skate shops that would ship internationally. They are out there, but the choices are more limited. And the price of shipping at certain shops was insane. For example, one store wanted $300 just to ship a complete over here.

I ended up finding a decent deal. I officially placed my order for the Gravity 35” Pool Model. It was $153.00. Add $70.00 more for the shipping, and the grand total was $223.00.

THE WAIT So the board was ordered. The waiting brought me back to the days of sending an actual handwritten check to a place like California Cheap Skates and waiting what seemed like months to get my board and skate paraphernalia. During the wait I dreamed of the places I would skate. I would walk around town and constantly notice rad spots. If I only had my board, I thought. Again, YouTube came to the rescue. The flow of skate videos on the Internet is without end. I remember the days when all we had were videos like The Search for Animal Chin and Wheels of Fire on videocassette, and we wore those things out. Here is an official gracias to the Internet for providing skateboarding an endless stream of skate footage fodder.

Here in Nicaragua, we don’t have standard mail.

Stuff doesn’t get delivered directly to your house; instead you need to have a P.O. box at the post office and go check on it when you know something is on its way. After a couple of weeks I was checking the post office daily. Usually, boxes from the United States take about two weeks. But not my deck. After three weeks I thought it may have gotten lost or stolen. I tried to track it, but the tracking only worked until it left the USA. But finally, right when I was ready to give up, it showed up, one month and one day after it was ordered.

I was stoked that it came assembled. I took it out of the box and skated home, as the Nicaraguenses stared and shouted words of encouragement.

Dodging traffic can be challenging, but the drivers don't seem to mind.

THE LOCAL SCENE Where are all the locals? Ever since I’ve gotten my board I have not seen one local skater. It’s not like there are a load of them; I’m guessing in the realm of five to 10 at the most. From what I’ve seen, it’s mostly kids who have somehow gotten a board, most of them beat-to-death decks that possibly some tourist or foreigner left behind. I’ve had my eye out for the local skaters, and for reasons unknown they have gone underground.

Maybe they were not from here. In any case, I’m looking, and I feel they will show up sooner or later.

In my opinion, skating is going to take off in some of the cities of Nicaragua. One pro skater who was born in Nicaragua has been back to skate here, and even opened a skate shop in the capital city, Managua. A skatepark called the Surf Ranch has also opened in San Juan de Sur. Skating weaves itself right in with the Nicaraguan youth culture, and as mentioned, the skating here is not frowned upon in any way. If anything, it would be encouraged by everyone from the little shop owner to the cowboy on his horse.

THE SKATE SPOTS THE RIDE Riding on a longboard was not the same as riding a standard deck. When I first jumped on, I noticed how loose the trucks were and how quickly it turned. I’ve always skated with a tighter truck and was not used to being able to turn on a dime. On the way back from the post office I was wearing a pair of sandals, something that just doesn’t work for ollieing, or any other trick for that matter. Still, I couldn’t resist trying as I approached curbs and other obstacles, which are never-ending in this city.

I got home and put on some real shoes and hit the streets. Here in Estelí, there are a few types of streets.

The majority are a cobblestone paver type that will rattle your teeth out. You will also find some actual paved and smooth roads, and also good old dirt roads.

Many of the sidewalks are tiled, and this makes for a slippery surface, especially if wet. Thankfully, some of the paved roads are right by our house in the center of the city. I can go out the front door and roll away on a paved street. But the paved streets can end suddenly, so I’m especially on guard if I’m bombing a hill.

I got out on the streets and couldn’t believe how smooth a ride I had, how I could just fly. A few pushes and I was cruising down the street going at speeds to which I was not accustomed without truck wobbling.

I was riding just to ride. It was new, it was fun and it was skating.

Estelí is Nicaragua’s third-largest city, with a population of a little over 100,000. It is in the mountains, so it has its share of hills. With the hills come staircases, ledges and other skate spots. The local craftsmen shape all kinds of transitions up walls and the sides of ledges, providing a constant barrage of wall-riding availability. The home and shop owners get a kick out of seeing a weird foreigner trying to stick a wall ride and bail. It’s common to get a round of applause after sloppily sticking a 180 ollie or pop shove-it.

At one spot, we were asked to leave by a security guard. “It’s prohibited,” the guard said. I said that we needed a photo. The guard miraculously decided it was okay, seeing as we needed a photo.

I’m only at the beginning of discovering what is available to skate on.

THE DIFFERENCE Longboarding is skateboarding. I admit that when I was immersed in the skating scene of the ’90s and early 2000s, I thought longboarding was lame. I only admit to this so as to receive the pardon of all those longboarders out there. I was knocking what I did not know.

But now I am a convert. A longboard feels just as good under my feet as any other skate deck.

A longboard is ideal for the cracked and heaved streets of Nicaragua. Here it is common to come across open manhole covers, horse manure and streets that abruptly turn into cobblestone or worse. With these skate-wheel-squelching disasters, it pays to be riding a longboard and to have softer, larger wheels and quick-turning maneuverability.

STOKED TO JUST SKATE When we first were planning on moving over here, I had no idea that it would be an amazing place to skateboard. But it’s great to be in Nicaragua and have a deck. I won’t make the mistake again of showing up to a foreign country without a skateboard. The lesson has been learned: Be prepared to skate, and “to skate or not to skate” is not a question.

It feels natural to be rolling down the streets again, and to be the one creating the symphonic sound of skate wheels humming down the street. CW

IT ALL BEGAN ONE NIGHT IN 2012 at the Soho Beach House hotel in Miami Beach, Fla. I was at a gathering for a friend’s engagement when I overheard Joner Strauss talking with a bunch of our mutual friends about his most recent project. I initially tuned out the conversation because I assumed he was talking about another Board-Up Wakeboarding event, which I had attended in the past. But a particular word drew my attention back: “longboarding.”

Hearing how passionate Joner was about longboarding made me even more intrigued. After overhearing him respond to someone’s inquiry about what a longboard is, I immediately remembered skateboarding as a kid and thought about how much I would like to do it again. I recalled how I had given up on skateboarding when I was young because I couldn’t do all the tricks my friends could do; so I was glad to hear Joner mention that longboarding is more accessible than typical short-board skateboarding, since it is less focused on doing tricks and is more geared toward transport, cruising and exercise.

After asking Joner 101 questions about longboarding, I purchased a board, a Kryptonics pintail, at a local sporting goods store. I

was immediately intrigued with my first longboarding experience. At first I had to adjust to riding again, but I got the hang of it relatively quickly and began riding a few times a week after work and on the weekends. The more I rode, the more I began to notice some positive changes.

• I noticed an increase in my overall athletic abilities, which was reflected in the improvement of my skills as the quarterback for a competitive flag football team.

• I started to see longboarding as a way to spend more time outdoors and be present with the environment.

• I felt more joyous, energized, confident and centered.

• I felt more relaxed in both mind and body.

• I was able to challenge myself each time I rode — so I felt accomplished after every ride.

• And when I wasn’t longboarding, I was always thinking about it and wanting to be back on my board.

I started to wonder why all these changes were happening. Was this yet another new venture that I would begin but not finish? Or was this something that would stay in my life?

To give you some background about my occupation, I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist (CCH). I own a private practice in North Miami Beach, where I work with individuals, couples and families of various ages. Clients come to me for support with the hope of discovering solutions to problems with anxiety, stress, depression, terminal illness, grief and loss, pain management, substance abuse, physical and sexual abuse, insomnia, phobias, eating disorders, confidence, focus, relationships and more. As you can imagine, I have considerable responsibility in

my day-to-day work with clients.

My job is extremely rewarding and humbling, but it can also be tiring and stressful at times. I began riding at night to calm my mind and release any stress I had taken on throughout the workday. Once I realized how successful this was for me, I wanted to share with others what longboarding has to offer. I became curious about who else might have similar experiences. After searching the Internet and reading different forums and articles, I realized that tons of people had discovered how therapeutic and helpful longboarding could be.

I arranged to meet with Joner for lunch to discuss my discovery and hypothesis on longboarding and therapy. When I told him I thought there was something healing about longboarding, he agreed without hesitation. He explained that longboarding involves a “flow” and “stoke” that are absolutely healing, and he told me he had no doubt that others would love to share their healing experiences with me. We then spent an hour brainstorming ideas about the next step we would take, finally deciding to work together on developing something called “Longboard Therapy.”

Joner and I developed two components of Longboard Therapy: I searched for a way to include the action-oriented sport of longboarding as an intervention in my work with clients, and Joner continued to grow and expand the International Distance Skateboarding Association (IDSA). According to Joner, “The goal of the IDSA is to make sure that people see skateboarding as organized, safe and as a viable source of transportation, via events, clinics and races, with hopes of spreading the stoke to the community at large — to position longboarding as one of the most accessible sports around.”

Together, Joner and I are spreading the word that there is a healing aspect in longboarding and that the growing longboard community is entirely inclusive and welcoming.

Joner suggested that we conduct a series of interviews with people who could assist us in our endeavor. He set up our first interview phone conference with Don Tashman from Loaded Boards.

Don was generous and cooperative, sharing his appreciation of both components of Longboard Therapy and what they have to offer. He related to many of my therapeutic views on change and agreed with me about the importance of using both mind and body to create change. He also thanked Joner for all the hard work he had put into the community, calling him an innovator. Don shared many interesting perspectives and insights on flow, stoke, the expanding of stoke, the breaking down of fear and the long-term potential of the longboarding community. I was particularly enlightened when he shared his view on stoke, linking it to an idea he read in social psychologist Erich Fromm’s 1956 book The Art of Loving. Don explained, “Stoke is a feeling of a pure sensation that you want to share — because it is natural to want the best for another person without condition.” He said, “Stoke is a spark of infinity, and we all have the potential to be infinite. Stoke is challenging yourself in your own way while gaining a sense of control and pushing its boundary. It is very personal, so find your own flow.”

Although Don's personal story is a great one, this was clearly more than just an interview with a man who makes longboards.

This was a conversation with someone who truly believes that longboarding has infinite healing properties and who is extremely passionate about sharing this belief with others.

This conversation was exactly what I needed to begin formulating my ideas about the relationship between psychotherapy and longboarding.

Don’s ideas about the mind and body concepts of stoke and flow were very consistent with my therapeutic approach, which I call Solution Informed Mindful Therapy (SIMT). This approach adheres to the belief that clients have resources to discover solutions to their problems within themselves. It is based on the notion that the present moment has a great deal of healing to offer, and that linking both the conscious and unconscious mind can lead to holistic change.

After talking to Don and reflecting some more on my ideas, I created a plan to incorpo-

rate longboarding as an intervention with particular clients. In learning how to longboard, I came to understand that it involves developing balance, focusing intently on the task at hand in the present moment, learning to let go in order to become one with the board, learning to get back up after falling, and taking on new challenges that arise in the environment. This seemed to me like a parallel process to life, which requires learning how to balance different emotions, developing a relationship with the present moment, learning how to let go of things that are no longer relevant, taking cal-

culated risks toward making change and facing fears and challenges. I hypothesized that if these concepts were understood and practiced through a combination of longboarding and traditional talk therapy, it would lead my clients to improve in some of the following areas: • confidence • focus • a sense of physical and mental balance • resilience • patience • joy • the ability to address fears and challenges • the ability to deal with anger, stress and problematic behaviors.

My first Longboard Therapy client was Antonio*, a 47-year-old man who first sought counseling when his wife passed away after a yearlong struggle with cancer. My work with Antonio started with a few sessions in the office setting. We spoke about how he could examine the pain from his loss and — when he was ready — make one small change at a time in order to become more hopeful. When I described Longboard Therapy to Antonio, he let me know he wanted to try it out, since it would allow us to have our sessions outdoors. He had no prior experience with skateboarding, but he was eager to explore how the exercise of longboarding could help him move through his grief.

Antonio and I worked together for seven sessions, which I conducted in both the office and outdoor settings. In our last session together, Antonio shared with me that Longboard Therapy had helped him manage his emotions, release stress, focus on the present, accept his pain and sadness, begin the healing process and rediscover his love of sporting activities.

Since working with Antonio, I have conducted Longboard Therapy with several other clients of various ages, levels of longboarding experience and therapeutic issues. I typically begin Longboard Therapy sessions by leading the client through a mindfulness breathing meditation while we both stand on our boards on the grass. The intention behind this exercise is to help the client become one with the board and the surrounding environment. Once I’ve taught the client the fundamentals of longboarding, we take a series of silent rides, after which we sit together and discuss the experience. We talk about the small changes they notice in each of their rides and discuss how they can notice small changes in other areas of their lives. After more challenging rides, I lead the client in a discussion about facing fears and overcoming obstacles. The combination of traditional talk therapy with longboarding — a sport that involves getting centered, becoming focused and establishing a mind-body connection — helps clients experience and enact solutions in dynamic new ways. LONGBOARDING & AROMATHERAPY I first learned about aromatherapy last year. Simply stated, aromatherapy is the use of natural essential oils to alleviate muscular tension, pain and inflammation and help the nervous system adjust to stress. As I began to find out more about it, I realized that it had some excellent benefits for longboarders. A simple Internet search led me to Danielle Sade Sade, a local expert in aromatherapy who lives only five minutes away from me. Talk about a small world! I met up with Danielle in March and explained what life is like for longboarders: the amazing sense of balance and freedom that longboarding brings, along with the occasional bruise and road rash. She was intrigued about the world of longboarding as much as I was intrigued by her world of aromatherapy. I soon realized Danielle’s knowledge was much too good to keep bottled up. So I asked her to write something for Concrete Wave. I am hoping you’ll take the first steps and discover for yourself some of the incredible benefits of aromatherapy. — Ed.

Aromatherapy has a great impact on the whole mind and body equilibrium. Pure and natural essential oils come in small packages with great results. This makes them easy to carry around wherever you go. The following is a list of highly useful oils that you will find greatly enhances your experiences with longboarding … and beyond.

RECOMMENDED OILS Black Spruce: This essential oil comes from the pine family. It does wonders for muscular aches and pains and is great for adrenal fatigue.

Rosemary: This is a wonderful oil for circulation and stimulates the brain. It is very helpful to use prior to exercise to help prevent fatigue, boost energy and prevent muscle spasms. The cooling effect of this essential is very effective in pain relief.

Mobility Blend: This is a wonderful formulation

by Absolute Aromas that combines a range of essential oils to ease muscular aches and pains and help circulation. The blend comes in a readymade massage blend or a pure blend that may be added to baths, showers and massage treatments.

Aloe Vera Gel: A cool and soothing gel that absorbs quickly and provides an excellent base for essential oils and helps ease inflammation.

BEFORE A DAY OF LONGBOARDING Lavender: An athlete’s first aid oil. Lavender is an incredibly versatile oil; It can be used before, during and after a day of longboarding. It helps relieve muscle tension, eases pain if applied on muscle spasms or acute pain and is a great aid for bruises and sprains. Lavender also balances and calms emotions.

Sweet Marjoram: This oil should be used after a long day of longboarding to help calm the nerves, relieve aches and pains and promote a good night’s sleep.

For sluggish mornings: • Add a few drops of Black Spruce and Rosemary to your shower gel and shampoo. This is a great way to achieve that cool and refreshing feeling.

For balance and circulation: • Add a few drops of Lavender and massage your lower back. This helps stimulate circulation and is a great way to create balance.

• Add a few drops of Lavender to your skate shoes — it’s a great deodorizer. (The best after-shaves contain Lavender.)

AFTER A DAY OF LONGBOARDING For muscular aches and pains: • Add Mobility Massage to a bath, shower or sauna. This is an easy way to use this unique formulation that eases muscular aches and pains.

For sunburn: • Add 10 drops of Lavender to two tablespoons Aloe Vera Gel and spread on sunburn.

For bruises and scrapes: • Add a few drops of Lavender to disinfect and help ease trauma to the skin.

For stiff muscles and joints: • Add a few drops of Mobility Essential Oil to one tablespoon Aloe Vera Gel and massage on stiff joints and muscles.

For sleeping: • Add a few drops of Lavender and Sweet Marjoram in your bath. These two oils working together have a sedating and muscle-relaxing effect. CW

EthanLau

ETHAN LAU is a name that has been synonymous with style to the members of the global downhill skate community that starting traveling in the early 2000s. Not style in the sense of image or fashion or any garbage like that, but the Hawaiian spirit that Ethan carries with him – one of respect for his surroundings and the unity among the brotherhood of skaters. The natural world is so dominant in Hawaii, and those who’ve been there are immediately and acutely aware of how small their existence is to the vast power of the Pacific Ocean that surrounds the islands. Growing up in such a humbling situation will make an observer out of anyone. I would guess it is because island people can’t get away from each other that they learn to say less and stay true to their character through action; when I met Ethan he was quiet as hell but he skated with such control and determination that I could sense a burning fire inside. As you read, you will see Ethan takes time to sit and think. After a three-day racing event in my hometown, I once offered him a bed his last night before he was to fly home; rather than sleeping, he preferred to sit on the floor with his back against the wall and listen to music the whole night through while he waited for the next day to rise. I asked Matt Kienzle to try to get inside that aloof mind, and Matt claims it took a long time to get Ethan to even agree to answer these few questions. INTERVIEW BY MATT KIENZLE | PHOTOS: OLIVIER SÉGUIN-LEDUC I sat down with my good friend Ethan Lau for a long-overdue interview. While we talked mostly about mangoes, the goal was to talk about downhill skateboarding. Ethan was born in 1984 and raised on Oahu, the most populated of the Hawaiian Islands. He has been a downhill skateboarder for the past 15 years of his life. He is also one of the most inspiring characters I’ve met in this downhill skateboarding scene, and it’s mostly because of his roots. Hanging with Ethan is like going back in time; technology is obsolete and everything is yet to be discovered.

Matt K: So, Ethan, why did you get into skateboarding?

Ethan Lau: My dad being my dad, he really made me just want to be more free, I think. He was so into what he was into that he actually created this force field that astrally projected who I was becoming to the adverse side of the spectrum. I was looking for an escape, another form of a paintbrush. I didn’t know what it was or why it was, but skateboarding found me. It’s really introduced me to a lot of cool people and some cool external and internal places, for sure.

MK: How did you acquire your first skateboard?

EL: I stole the money from my pops because he accused me of stealing money. It wasn’t till after I got whupped that I knew where he hid his money. I figure if he thinks I stole some s---, I should at least live up to his visions.

Next day: money in hand, vessel under foot. It’s weird that his energy exposed me to what he didn’t want. What he didn’t want from me is what seeded my thought. At the time, my thoughts were centered around lilikoi flowers, Samoan crabs and trying to catch popuilos. Then a different orbit came into my thoughts with the skateboard. It totally turned me into the commuter as a younger kid. I could now go to the fishing store and go to all these different places; it was f---ing sweet.

What about skating downhill?

EL: My first experience in downhill skateboarding was probably in Kaneohe Bay when I was in middle school. I had a Gravity or a Bareback. And it was just barefoot around Lilipuna. I would just hit this golf cart path and these steep concrete driveways. I was just trying to get from A to B. It wasn’t about doing runs, it was about going somewhere and being weird.

MK: Barefoot?

EL: Barefoot, shoes, slippers … but mainly just barefoot, yeah.

MK: You still skate barefoot to this day. Any reason in particular?

EL: It’s another sense involved. When you take the packaging off your feet, it gives you an extended taste. Your feet are your antennas. Once you remove your shoes you are instantly a part of the earth; you get the earth’s energy and you get that electricity. If you go into a situation barefoot, you go into that situation with more awareness. It opens up all these pathways in your body.

For example, if you go on a hike with shoes, you will walk a straight line with hardly any movement. If you walk the same path barefoot, all these different points in your body become available.

MK: How did you get into downhill skateboarding?

EL: Well, my friend Todd Berry got me into it. He had a longboard and I wanted one because I wanted to glide. I was just like, f--- you, dude, I want one too. So I stole the money from my dad.

MK: When you were getting into downhill, who did you look up to?

EL: Brah, it was weird; there was no one to look up to. Until I met Justin [Lono] I didn’t know about anyone else. I wasn’t looking at videos on YouTube.

I was posting videos, but I wasn’t lurking videos like kids do now.

MK: When did you meet Justin Lono?

EL: Justin came later on in high school. My friend Todd was into it; I got into it with my friend Larry Kodama in middle school. We’d go up into Tantalus and Pacific Heights and all these different places.

He was doing his own thing. He was skating more like Darryl Freeman style. He had his frontside standies down back in the early 2000s. I remember me and him getting all artsy on some moonlit bombs. At that time, before we met Darryl, we were experimenting with a lot of different theories, wheels, gloves and hills. Once we met Darryl, he threw down some guidelines. He showed us his spaceship helmet and leathers, told us the standard … and me and Justin were just infinitely morphed by Darryl. In a good way, he was the elder. He gave us the deal on Kryptonics wheels, he took us skating … and Darryl was into park, transition and pool skateboarding, too. He was right in the neighborhood; it was good times.

MK: When did you start riding for Sector 9?

EL: Dude, like officially riding for Sector … maybe in Montreal after Top Challenge in 2007. They would give me wheels and let me tag along, and eventually I became part of the family.

MK: Surfing the mountain and bombing the wave?

EL: Surfing literally unlocks your skating and skating unlocks your surfing. It totally opens new doorways. If you skate pools, you look at the lip of the wave like a pool. You can get up that vert or you can take a line to get up to the lip. Especially if you bring bombing hills and pool skating into it. You can downhill in a pool; if you look at it in the right aspect, you can bomb the f--- out of a pool and do gnarly carve grinds like if you were skating downhill.

MK: Why do you choose backyard pools over skateparks?

EL: I think it has to do with the gravity. It’s just a desire to be in a place that wasn’t meant to be for what it is.

MK: What’s up with harvesting?

EL: For me, harvesting is the most highest-level s---.

I can’t even begin to explain the importance of real organics. Organic isn’t some sticker that you see at Whole Foods. Real organics is like: I’ma pick this fukka because it’s glowing, you know? That’s orbs. It’s almost next to seeing a unicorn. Like could you imagine seeing a glistening orb? Most people don’t know that in their yard they have a temple.

“Your feet are your antennas. Once you remove your shoes you are instantly a part of the earth; you get the earth’s energy and you get that electricity.”

MK: You mentioned moonlit bombs with Justin Lono.

Tell the readers about downhill skateboarding at night.

EL: The whole thing about bombing at night was that me and my friends could exist without having to be judged by anyone else. It was a different canvas for us.

We were more nocturnal people anyways. As I look back it’s a deeper meditation for me. I recall the jasmine, these nocturnal flowers letting us swim in their pollen; it’s just more of a spiritual thing, you know. You don’t have your eyes to give you form. Carving darkness was formlessness. No fool tucking; it was all a wind buffet for free.

MK: You’ve never even seen snow, right?

EL: Sometimes I wonder if snow even exists. I don’t have any desire to be cold. Snow is this mystical thing; it’s like petting a dragon. You know, is the dragon real?

Part of me wants to visit places with snow, but the other part knows my misery from past encounters with the cold. Calgary, 30 degrees was near fatal for me.

MK: Words of wisdom?

EL: I think skateboarders are not a mistake. It’s definitely a tribe of people who get together and get to experience some freak of nature possibilities — if it not be a pool, a ditch or some mountain that’s not made for us. But somehow we get to fully juice the lemon for all it’s worth. It boggles my mind. Skating taught me that bridges come in many forms, and not only physical bridges, but an internal net of bridges to spiritual planes. And I’m not talking God or aliens or anything … just love and its higher vibrations and euphoric consequences unfolding our lives, making us more like light.

We are very emotional creatures. When we are emotional I think we become more colder; our cells move slower, there’s less space in between ourselves, the chi flow gets blocked up by these walls of emotion. Love, on the other hand, creates movement of flowing chi, light spears beaming. That’s how skating, surfing and hiking make me feel. Everything is for a reason. Skateboarding and surfing really help me see more bridges.

MK: Any shout outs?

EL: I want to shout out all people, all the skaters helping out other skaters — people connecting with other people. Thanks for putting it out there. Setting that tone really promotes echoes of possibilities. CW

SLALOM RACING GREW all over the world in 2012. Although not reaching the huge numbers of participants in downhill or freeriding, more than 1,000 riders raced in ISSA-sanctioned races worldwide – the highest total recorded to date. Europe seems to have the most active slalom scenes, with France and the Czech Republic hosting many local races and getting junior riders involved. Australia hosted more than a dozen races, and Brazil is stepping up its slalom game too.

Germany’s Dominik Kowalski, Sweden’s Viking Hadestrand, Henrik Wadsten and Mikael Hadestrand, and Latvia’s Janis Kuzmins. Kathrin Sehl won the women’s overall title ahead of Russian newcomer Olesya Naumchik and veteran Lienite Skaraine from Latvia.

The highest-status race in North America was the Can/Am Slalom Championship, held in September in Antrim, New Hampshire, USA. Joe McLaren made a clean sweep of all three events, followed by Louis Ricard and Richy Carrasco in second and third overall, respectively.

With McLaren’s continuing domination, it’s no surprise that he finished as the world’s No. 1-ranked slalom racer for 2012. Kowalski’s strong placings at the Worlds and his dual wins at the European Championships made him 2012’s No. 2 overall racer, just barely ahead of Viking Hadestrand. Kuzmins finished the year ranked fourth overall, and Mikael Hadestrand charged into the No. 5 slot.

Italy’s Zaccaria Di Giorgio finished the year as the No. 1-ranked male Junior racer, and Raduska Podlahova as the No. 1-ranked female.

Congratulations to both riders! Look for lots of competition in the under-17 divisions in 2013.

Speaking of competitions: Both the World Championships and the European Championships are shaping up to be epic events. In early August, the UKSSA is gearing up for the European Championships at the Redbridge Cycling Center, aka Hog Hill, just outside London; and in October, the Texas Outlaws will be hosting the Worlds at the Hockley Soap Box Derby hill in Waller, Texas (near Houston). Both facilities are among the best in the world for slalom racing, with long, fast hills, smooth, grippy pavement and excellent amenities for racers.

TEXAS COLD FUSION SIZZLER MARCH 9-10, 2013 FOR THE PAST FEW YEARS, the Texas Cold Fusion Sizzler has consistently been one of the biggest and wildest slalom races in North America. The Texas Outlaws always throw a great race, not to mention one heck of a party.

This year, though, because the Outlaws are saving their big guns for the World Championships in October, the Sizzler was toned down a bit. Well, at least that was the plan ...

Still, more than 30 racers showed up at the Hockley Soap Box Derby hill about 40 miles northwest of Houston ... and so did the infamous Hockley tailwinds. In all three events, riders got blasted down the course by tailwinds of anywhere from 20-40 mph — and the hill was plenty fast already. Friends, there are few things in life that'll make you feel more alive than rocketing down the 9-foot-tall BAR (yep, that stands for Big-Ass Ramp) onto that butter-

smooth Hockley pavement and running a giant slalom course nearly a quarter-mile long with the wind giving you a huge push in the back — or blurring through the tight slalom at five cones per second at a verified 30+ mph. It'll make your eyes tear up — partly from the speed and partly from the raw excitement, with a touch of sheer terror thrown in.

Colorado legends George Pappas and Chris Barker showed why they’re both former world champions by placing first and second overall, respectively. Yours truly managed to take third, and Keith Hollien, Ryan Smith, Lou Statman and Keenan Thompson all laid down some smokin’ runs, too. We don’t have a ton of photos from this year’s race – but the one you see here should give you some idea of what things were like. If you skate slalom and haven’t been to Texas yet, get there; you’re missin’ out on a lot of fun. CW

I HAVE BEEN INVOLVED in Longboarding for Peace since it began back in July of last year. At first I was just handing out stickers and T-shirts and riding my board around. But as I stayed involved, I began to evolve. I started to really feel the power of this movement; I started to see how people were taking to Longboarding for Peace.

I meet around a thousand people a week working at our retail store, The Humble Hippie, in Ocean Beach, San Diego. At first Longboarding for Peace was just something that our good friend Mr. Brooke came up with, and I wanted to help my friend spread the word of his new idea, so I offered to pass out stickers and Tshirts for it. I even worked a few skate and surf events to spread the word and get people stoked for him. Well, as I started telling people about the mission we were on, I noticed how much everyone wanted to help. I mean everyone I talk to wants to help us somehow; I had everyone from old ladies to little babies sporting stickers and T-shirts.

Joy is something we as people all have within us. When we’re children, it seems easier to find joy in the simplest of things. I am guessing since

you’re reading Concrete Wave, you have found some joy in skateboarding, or you’re just starting to search for joy and happiness in hopes you will find it in longboarding.

As an owner of retail hippie stores for more than 12 years, I have met every kind of char-

acter you can imagine. I see some people who are living a life of happiness and fulfillment who in other people’s eyes are just getting by. I see people who are living on the streets smiling and laughing more than most of the people sitting in their BMWs at the stoplight in front of our store.

On The Pursuit Of Happiness Is A Long Arduous Road Be Prepared For Rainbows After The Volcano Explodes How Could You Appreciate This Good If You Didn’t Know Bad Even That’s Perception Like Who’s Better Mom Or Dad Stay Neutral In The Middle There is evil at both ends of the stick, so to speak.

Sure, the person living on the street could be miserable and unhappy just as easily as they are happy and joyful, just as the rich person in the fancy car chooses to be happy or unhappy. It is not things that really make us happy; it is a choice we make within ourselves.

As children none of us really care about being rich or poor; we only care about joy and happiness.

I grew up rough, tough, broke and happy. My parents didn’t have much of anything but time. I played with the kids in my same neighborhood; none of our families had much, but we all had fun.

When I was really young — 5, 6, 7 years old — I had a blast just playing in my yard, riding my bike up and down my street. At 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 years old I was having the time of my life playing tag and hideand-go-seek.

Joy and happiness are the freest things in the universe. Yet most of us choose to worry and stress.

Well, let me tell you this: Worry is like a rocking chair; it gives you something to do, but you never get anywhere. Today is the tomorrow we worried about yesterday. As a parent of three, I have learned that my kids don’t care if I am broke or rich; they just want me to be happy. Isn’t that what we all want: to be happy?

Children can have fun playing in the dirt, grass, snow, water or sand. We complicate joy and happiness with wealth and things. I have learned a lot just sitting and watching my kids play. I am sitting at the beach right now, I am flat-ass broke, I have no money, I drive a simple car, I live in a small apartment — and I am happy, and so are my kids.

I used to be the parent that was always trying to give my kids everything but my time. Now I just want to give my kids joy and happiness. I have found that as long as I am smiling and enjoying the life I am living, the more joy my life has. A big smile is worth more than anything. You can give it away all day every day and it doesn’t cost you a dime.

I try to live my life by one simple saying: Don’t

let the things you have to do keep you from doing the things you want to do. I could choose to sit around and worry about all kinds of things, like paying bills or world peace. This just creates stress.

If you really want to change the world, give the power to the people. We all have the choice each and every day: Are we going to be full of joy and happiness or worry and sadness? I choose to be happy, so therefore I am, and so are the people around me. I say spread as much good vibe as you can, no matter what evil or negative energy comes your way.

Longboarding for Peace is just a vessel. We can all jump on board and start getting joy and happiness. A lot of people have taken Longboarding For Peace and used it to spread the joy and happiness they get from longboarding to people all around the world. When I am asked what Longboarding for Peace is, I tell that person it’s really Longboarding for People. That’s what we are really doing: helping people find peace. The earth is at peace, the universe is at peace; it’s all of us who are riding around on this planet that’s turning at more than 1,000 mph and traveling through the galaxy at 60,000 mph who need to find peace. We are like the spit on a fast-pitch curveball. If that’s not humbling, I don’t know what is.

The next time you’re riding your board — it might be a shortboard, a longboard, a penny deck, a surfboard, a boogie board or a snowboard — and you find some joy and happiness, make sure you share it with the rest of us assholes that are strapped to this planet. We are all people, and I think a lot of us have forgotten what that means. I am a people, you’re a people; don’t you want to be a people, too? We are all people, so it’s time to make it personal. Laugh loud, smile big and help me spread good vibe all around this bad-ass planet we get to call home. I am from planet Earth; where in the hell are you from? Keep it real!

Beyond Boarders

“MY 10TH-GRADE GEOGRAPHY TEACHER WAS a d---,” says 26-year-old Oscar Loreto. “I don’t remember what he said verbatim, but it was something like, ‘What happened to you? What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be somewhere else?’

“He was referring to the special ed. class,” Oscar continues. “He didn’t even try to talk to me or anything. I didn’t expect that from an adult, much less a teacher. I’m not sure what my hands have to do with my brain, but sometimes people just get weirded out, I guess.”

The doctors call Oscar’s “condition” a congenital birth defect. When he was still in his mother’s womb, the amniotic bands wrapped around his limbs, preventing their development. The result: Oscar was born with no fingers on his left hand and half a thumb on his right. He was also born with no left leg from the knee down. He uses a specially designed prosthetic to walk, run, skate and everything in between.

“They started me off with a foot that was made for everyday walking,” Oscar says.

“Even running wasn’t a problem, but once I started skating and learning tricks and jumping off stuff, I broke tons of prosthetic

feet. The one I have now is finally perfect and doesn’t snap on tricks. I was gonna try to make a custom one, but by the time I met with SCOPe, the prosthetic company who sponsors me, they already designed one and I was the guinea pig. There’s a spring inside – basically like bushings that mimic ankle movements. But it took years to figure that out.”

But how does someone who’s missing 9 ½ fingers and a foot discover and excel at skateboarding; obtain a bachelor’s degree in film; get sponsored by Element, Swiftwick and SCOPe Orthotics and Prosthetics; skate in the X Games multiple times; and become special projects manager for Adaptive Action Sports, a nonprofit organization that aims to spread awareness and get people with permanent physical disabilities involved in action sports?

“I was pretty much an average kid,” Oscar says. “I’d always watch soccer games with my pops, and I played for a little bit as a kid. But when skateboarding randomly fell into my lap was one of those pivotal moments for me. My cousin was doing it, so I tried it and eventually kept going.

“Then one time I saw an ad of Jon Comer [professional skateboarder also missing a leg from the knee down] doing a kickflip in a magazine and his leg was coming off. That was the first time I’d ever seen anybody with one leg do anything that I really liked. I mean, I would go to the doctor’s office and see posters of a runner with one leg on the walls, so that kind of always inspired me, but seeing Comer in that ad was pretty tight.”

From there Oscar was hooked. He knew it wouldn’t be easy, but he figured out ways to learn tricks and skate by watching and asking other kids for help. He would apply their techniques but adjust them to meet his needs through years of trial and error.

“Skateboarding helped me feel more normal,” Oscar explains. “I found a new group of friends who accepted me because I was a skater. They didn’t care that I only had one leg or whatever. All along, though, my biggest struggle was always sharing how I was with the world. I would only wear pants and keep my hands in my pockets. For the most part it was a personal battle within myself to open up more and be able to deal with all the people staring or pointing at me at the mall. I realized that in order to be happy I needed to do what I do the best I can, accept that this is what God gave me and just roll with it. It wasn’t until I was about 16 or 17 that I realized I should just be open about it. It was liberating for sure.”

In 2005 Oscar met Amy Purdy and Daniel Gale, the cofounders of Adaptive Action Sports, at a prosthetics trade show. The three chatted and exchanged info, and Purdy and Gale invited Oscar to go on the AAS skate tour in 2007. He

was the first skater they recruited, and he competed as an AAS team skater for a few years.

As AAS grew, Oscar realized how swamped Purdy and Gale were and offered to step in and help out.

“I really wanted to see the skate side of AAS grow,” Oscar says. “I asked them to delegate work to me. I started off just making their videos of their events and promos, then in 2009 was voted onto the board of directors, and in 2011 became the special projects manager, where I oversee the skate programs and events and create new video marketing plans and shows for their website.”

“Oscar has been with AAS almost from day one,” says Gale, who now serves as executive director of AAS. “We met him at the first-ever Extremity Games, and from the first minute it was obvious he had an extra spark … the kind that most people just chase their whole lives. He has a charisma that you want to be around. Not only is he a kickass skater, videographer, friend and father, but he’s also an extremely selfless and giving person. He’s dedicated to helping others and had that drive long before he came on with AAS. This made him an obvious choice. His positive attitude is infectious, and when you skate with him it just makes you skate better. He’s dedicated to his sport, art and family. He’s a true friend and I love the guy. Plus, after his mom had the entire AAS team over and cooked us the best carne asada of our lives I knew we had to have him as part of the AAS family! We hope he sticks with AAS for many years to come.”

2012 was a great year for AAS and Oscar. Both gained more industry support than ever before thanks to help from

professional skaters, events like the Agenda trade show and organizations like IASC. They were able to raise some money, the skate team has grown, and collaborations with I Ride I Recycle, Long Beach Autism and a few other nonprofits are on the horizon.

“It’s not only amputees we should be addressing and helping and working with,” says Oscar, “but kids with cognitive disabilities as well. I feel that we should all unite and work together to grow outreach and awareness, not compete against each other for the same dollars.”

Oscar is also currently filming and editing the first fulllength adaptive skate video for AAS, and he and his friend Steven Ban are working on “Maps VM,” a new skate video magazine project.

Given the general disdain a good portion of the skateboarding community has for longboarders these days, how does a hardcore, lifelong street skater like Oscar (except for when he’s on his cruiser heading to the liquor store) end up with a cover and feature in Concrete Wave, and how does he feel about it?

“I’ve never really viewed longboarders as uncool or anything like that,” Oscar says. “I usually use a longboard to cruise to the store, and it’s a must to have my Element cruiser when I’m filming. This whole thing was actually pretty challenging because I don’t really consider myself a longboarder.

The photographer asked me to pick some spots, and I drew a blank. All I could think of was the riverbank to cruise on. I also never thought to take a longboard to the skatepark and try to ollie stairs or boardslide a rail until I checked out some of the longboarding magazines and saw they were skating street spots. So that was different, but fun.”

“I didn’t know that in longboarding,” he continues, “if you aren’t wearing a helmet people think you are the dumb one, whereas in street skating it’s considered uncool to wear a helmet. I actually had to reshoot photos because the first time I wasn’t wearing one, and then Concrete Wave decided they wanted me on the cover so we had to reshoot with a helmet.

“Also, longboards are great for adaptive athletes because they are bigger, and people who don’t know how to skate so well feel safer and more comfortable on them. Or take someone like Greg Shaw, who has no legs … a cruiser or longboard is beneficial for him because it’s so wide and has better wheels and bearings and rolls better. So longboarding is actually a really good way for adaptive individuals to get introduced to skateboarding or an organization like AAS.” You can help AAS by visiting www.adacs.org and donating or emailing them for ways you or your business can get involved.

“We apply for grants, but they are hard to get,” explains Oscar, “so it’s usually easier for us to get donations from

people or businesses. People tend to donate more when they realize there are veterans involved with AAS too. Sometimes prosthetic companies will hook up a kid who needs one and doesn’t have insurance because they are in it for the love of helping people. Others are more strict and go by the books and they’ll deny the kid.

“Having a professional skater endorse AAS would be a huge help to us growing our organization and spreading the word as well. That’s something we are still working on. I’d also love to see more companies helping out because I don’t think they know too much about this realm yet. But those who know us, they know that we’re just real skaters doing what we love, and it spreads in a very positive way.”

And positive Oscar is. “Throughout my whole life, whatever negative thought I have, I’d always try to convert it to a positive and use it to motivate me,” he says. “Skateboarding, regardless of what kind, has showed me that I can overcome challenges and achieve the goals I set for myself. My dad bounced when I was a kid, so I only knew him for a little bit, but it was my family just telling me, ‘Yeah, you’re different, but it doesn’t mean you still can’t do things and excel in life. Since you are different, make it a good different.’ With that instilled in me pretty young, it just helped me and always made me think of the dopeness that can come out of any situation.” CW Oscar with his daughter Alicia.

IT WAS AUGUST 2011 WHEN SURFERS from Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, started to take longboarding to the next level. They were the spark that ignited the longboard scene in this country of more than 250 million people. It’s an archipelago with world-class surf spots, yet surfing is not the country’s most popular sport.

In August 2011, during Ramadan, a Muslim holy month, when Indonesians were mostly fasting and the pace of life seemed slower, those surfers gathered to try a longboard. Gemala

Hanafiah, a pro surfer for Roxy, was given a Roxy cruiser, and she excitedly called out her fellow surfers to try it. It was an offer to feel the sensation of surfing on concrete, and it was an offer that most of them couldn’t refuse, because Jakarta is 100 miles away from the nearest surf spot. There were seven persons, mostly girls, with only one board! Later that day, word got around, and some fellow surfers who also owned longboards joined the session. It was undoubtedly the first fire that ignited this emerging scene.

Years before, way back in the ’70s, Indonesian skaters already skated those classic longboards, but since that time the scene was still mostly just skaters or surfers with nothing in between.

Old-school skaters were not encouraged to bring their boards back to the street because there were no crews, communities, events or anything else that related to longboards. But that finally changed. After the surfers started to skate longboards, the excitement went up to the executives of surf and skate brands, who are mostly skaters and surfers from the ’70s-’90s era. In the last quarter of 2011, the sport hbegan to make its scene. More people were joining in who previously rode solitary or only in a small group. At that time there were already several crews such as Jakarta Longboarders, LAKA Longboard (from Bandung, a city 100 miles from Jakarta) and Pancoran Crew, and also the newly formed Indo Longboard and Longboard Girls Crew Indonesia.

Most of the groups are city-based except Indo Longboard and Longboard Girls Crew Indonesia — especially Longboard Girls Crew Indonesia, who were affiliated with Longboard Girls Crew in Madrid, Spain. This also made them the ambassadors of longboarding in

Indonesia. Two of the founders, Yona Yu and Lissabrina Pasla, were among the girls who tried Gemala’s board back in August 2011.

LGCI gathered all-girls crews from other places and made a chapter in Bali with Raihatul Janah, aka Chemy, as the host. They also made the longboard scene more noticed by the media.

As Indonesia is still a developing country, extreme sports are not popular. Yet people are interested in watching skaters, surfers or BMX riders nailing some tricks. When girls do these kinds of stuff, it’s twice as interesting. Mainstream media start turning their attention to longboards. Mostly they cover the stories as “concrete surfing for city surfers.” From nationwide TV to fashion magazines, longboarding is getting more and more publicity.

The most significant impact of good publicity is sponsorship. The first longboard event, Jakarta Street Bomb, was held in January 2012. It was a work of almost all crews from Jakarta to Bandung. We didn’t know how many would attend this event, but as we started preparing it, sponsors were coming in. There were way more than our expectations. Quik-

silver, Roxy, DC Shoes, Freedom Dolly, Billabong, Power Balance and more brands were giving away free complete boards, skate shoes and T-shirts as prizes. TV crews were coming to cover the events. Jakarta Street Bomb 2012 has set the benchmark for longboard events. It was a milestone. Later in the same year, more events were held by the sponsors themselves.

After the sponsors started to take notice of this new emerging sport, longboarding went bigger. The pioneer longboard-specialized stores started to be established: LongboardINA Skate Shop, followed by Watermelon Boardshop later on. Youth festivals invited the crews to exhibit longboarding.

The commercial side of this scene will hopefully support a better standing ground for the sport. More events and sponsorships may result in more competitiveness and regeneration of not just casual riders but also athletes. This started in September 2012, when we finally managed to run the first downhill competition, Graveyard Downhill — so called because we held the race in a cemetery complex. This race was the first regional event with participants coming from neighboring countries such as Singapore and Malaysia. This may also be the birth of South East Asia regional series in the future.

As the sport went wide, there started to be more crews in other parts of the country.

Indonesia is the biggest archipelago in the world, consisting of more than 13,000 islands spanning almost 3,300 miles from east to west.

(That’s a greater distance than Miami to Vancouver — Ed.) The bigger and famous islands are Java, Borneo, Sumatra and Bali. This makes it quite a challenge to develop anything nationwide. So if anything happens in one certain part, it needs special attention to notice it. We try to connect ourselves through Facebook and Twitter. This makes us able to at least search for riders or crews that we haven’t yet gotten in touch with. Longboard media also starting in Indonesia, initiated by the Papan Panjang blog.

With all these social media, we’ve started to find more and more crews. In Surabaya, the eastern part of Java Island, Longboard J has come up with full support from Cosmic Clothes, a local skatewear brand. In Lombok, an island east of Bali, another new crew arose, Lombok Longboard Nature Crew. In Jakarta also a group of skaters started a new group called Daggers.

Another best thing is to do skate trips around Indonesia. We have lots of places with smooth pavement, long hills and little traffic that haven’t yet been discovered by us longboarders.

One example is the longboarders from Surabaya, who arranged a long tour for a year in which every month they had to go out of town to find the best views for longboarding down many hills in Indonesia. Those places included Central Java until Bali. As time went by, the enthusiasts of longboarding were increasing. When they were at Jogjakarta for skating downhill, approximately 20 people took part in sweeping down Mount Merapi. They plan to do the same thing in further places. Nevertheless, we are positive that if we keep on maintaining good management and sponsorship, we can do much crazier stuff on a longboard.

Most of the big cities on Java Island are not skateable. The unsmooth sidewalks and unorganized buildings force longboarders to find nice spots in the mountainous areas instead. In Malang, some spots are lean enough to allow us to be able to go downhill for a long distance

without sliding to decrease the speed. However, there are also hills in Malang which have high degrees of steepness within short distances of 100-200 meters. The hills around the Batu area are indeed ideal. The steeper the hill means the shorter the distances. Likewise, the leaner it is, the longer the distance. Mount Bromo is very steep — very different from Malang. This is caused by the height of that mountain, which is more than 2,500 meters. On Mount Bromo, we intentionally choose leaner hills to find longer distances to go downhill. The best part of this spot is the fantastic view of the mountain. When a longboarder from abroad comes to Indonesia, it is too bad if they do not try to longboard in Bali.

Besides the amazing beach view, some roads in Bali are quite quiet. You can easily find long steep downhill, short steep downhill, long lean downhill and short lean downhill for beginners.

For sure, those terrains have beautiful views.

On the other hand, Indonesia is also famous because of the high uncertainty of our social/political conditions. We have school fighting going on in some places, and teenagers that have negative behavior spreading around.

Our mission as the longboard community is to bring the longboard awesomeness to them — to let them try and feel the adrenaline we get by playing longboards and tell how we love our longboard to the bone. Hopefully, it can give them something positive to do and later we can have more talent to come and compete in international events.

The scene has grown organically right now: getting more riders, making more events, campaigning for skate safety, giving more business opportunities and also looking for more hills to shred. In Indonesia, with such huge differences between each place, we have the spirit of unity in diversity. For us longboarding will also be that way: the brotherhood/sisterhood of riders around the world, united by the sport that we all love, longboarding. CW

PEEDS WHEEL PROGRAM Gage is 3 years old and has been battling leukemia (a blood cancer) for the past three years. While he has been in the hospital, his parents have been exposed to the reality of how many kiddos are suffering and fighting cancers and diseases. The one thing that pulled them through was a reward at the end of a harsh treatment procedure.

So Gage’s parents decided to create the PEEDS wheel. It’s a new bright orange 70mm race wheel that will be used to generate funds that will directly purchase toys for kids.

The toys will be given to them by their doctors and nurses during children’s hospital visits. The PEEDS wheel is teamed up with Longboarding for Peace and will be sold through churchillmfg.com.

Joy and happiness are not just words we say; I practice what I preach. We decided to have a shoe drive to collect shoes for people in San Diego who needed them. The mission statement of Longboarding for Peace gave us our start: search, spark, stoke. We searched for a way to create some peace, joy and a little happiness in a few people’s lives. An idea sparked for a shoe drive, and then we just kept stoking it until we had 200 pairs of shoes to help those who need them.

When we started this I was only concerned with creating some joy and happiness in some strangers’ lives with some new kicks. What I did not realize was how much the people involved, including myself, would get from helping others. The joy and happiness that was created with this simple small shoe drive affected everyone involved in ways we never imagined. It’s hard to tell who is helping whom. Ask yourself this one question: What would happen if everyone did what you do? Help us spread some good vibe by doing something nice for someone who could use it.

To everyone who donated shoes, thank you for helping us kick evil’s ass.

RETURN TO JAFFA, ISRAEL

By Michael Brooke | Photos: Yahav Trudler After the ISPO trade show wrapped up in Munich, I traveled back to Tel Aviv, Israel, to meet up with workers at the Peres Center for Peace. It was a follow-up to the tour we had done in July 2012. On February 11, 2013, we organized a longboard session of about 30 Arab and Israeli children. Although these kids live close by each other, they never really get to hang out. Longboarding for Peace is there to forge these relationships.

You can’t get any more perfect than waves, concrete and peace combined in one location.

Longboarding for Peace:

HOUSTON, TEXAS Our core group of skaters loves every minute of the session!

ouston, Texas, has the highest number of millionaires per capita of any city in the USA. Yet 17% of the population lives below the poverty line. Those people mostly live in poorer neighborhoods, often called ghettos. Houston’s main ghettos are broken up into wards. The Fifth Ward is where world-renowned rappers the Geto Boys are from. It also happens to be where I grew up. Surrounded by drugs, prostitutes and gangs, we didn’t really have a lot of options. My best friend Andy and I got involved in drugs and gangs at an early age. We made all the wrong decisions and took all the wrong paths, all of which were leading to prison or death. The skateboard gave us an opportunity to escape our horrible surroundings. We could hop on a metro bus and go anywhere. We chose downtown.

Downtown Houston was like Disney World for skateboarders in the early ’90s. The police did not bother us, there were no gangsters, and the bad in our daily lives did not exist anymore.

It was great! I started skating in 1987 at the ripe old age of 10.

THE PIECE OF WOOD WITH FOUR WHEELS WAS MY TICKET OUT OF HELL. IT TOOK ME ACROSS THE COUNTRY, MADE ME SOME OF MY GREATEST FRIENDS AND LED ME TO A DECENT LIFE. was like a fish out of water. In his mind, skateboarding was the next best thing. He got me my first skateboard and taught me to jump off launch ramps, and my mother would tote me to the Skatepark of Houston any chance she had. We would sometimes go without other things in life, yet I never went without a board. My father would wear shoes with holes in the sole because he spent his shoe money to get me a board. So when I decided I was going to dedicate my life to the board, my parents were as supportive as if I told them I was going to Yale. When you grow up poor, the simple things in life can make all the difference. The piece of wood with four wheels was my ticket out of hell. It took me across the country, made me some of my greatest friends and led me to a decent life.

A few years ago I injured my back skating a rail. Not wanting to quit skating, but knowing I couldn’t jump down stairs anymore, I wasn’t sure what was going to happen. Then a friend introduced me to longboards. I chose the wrong style board and wheels, and in turn I did not have that much fun doing it. It did, however, keep me rolling. I was down for life.

After moving away from Houston for more than a decade, I moved back. I wanted to support the city that had given me so much. Needing a local shop, and being the kind of guy that only supports core shops, I got turned on to Carve Skate Shop. The guys running the shop were Neal Roberts and Sean Cook, two amazingly knowledgeable longboarders.

Neal helped me pick a board that suited my riding and what I wanted to do. It made a world of difference, and I fell in love with the longboard. At first it was just cruising and carving, then pumping and racing garages. Powersliding was natural to me since it was a fun trick we did in the late ’80s.

Having such a great time, I immersed myself in the longboard culture.

BY SOCIETY AT LARGE NOW HAVE A SENSE OF PURPOSE AND CREATIVITY. THEY UNDERSTAND THAT THEY CAN BE THEMSELVES.

One day as I was reading Concrete Wave, I came across an article on Longboarding for Peace. It was showing the great things they were doing and the stoke they were building. I knew I had to be a part of such a great movement.

Several emails and phone calls later, I was in. I was now part of L4P. And I knew the direction I wanted to go: Because I was from Houston and got started skating in Houston, and because Houston had poor kids in gangs, why not set up a branch of L4P here? Now L4P Houston is a reality.

I hooked up with the guys at Carve to see if they wanted to help. They were so down.

I also got in touch with Esteven Azcona at Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts (MECA), an arts center for underserved and underprivileged children.

They were more than excited to have us. My intent was to take longboarding to kids who were poor — I mean really poor; kids from neighborhoods rife with gangs and drugs — and give them something fun and creative to do. Something to take their minds off the troubles they faced in everyday life. I mean, a board with four wheels got me out, so maybe it could do the same for them.

I estimated that we might get 10 to 15 kids to sign up and try it, and figured maybe six to 10 of those would really dig it and keep coming back on a weekly basis. I was wrong.

Twenty-two kids, aged 2-16, came to the first session. Some of them were actual gang members – one of whom was 16 and covered in tattoos and already had a 2-year-old son.

Well, they enjoyed it so much that they kept coming back.

We are up to 38 kids now, and it grows by at least two to five kids each week. I have been told they are doing better in school and respecting authority due solely to the fact that they don’t want to get in trouble and have to miss our sessions. What a great response!

Companies like Loaded, Klever, Landyachtz and Restless donated more boards than I ever expected. These companies really believe in the cause and deserve our support and respect. Without them and others like Churchill Mfg., Crossroads, Big Myth, Sweet Spot, these Wheels and Abec 11, none of this would be possible.

These kids who had no real prospects and were basically written off by society at large now have a sense of purpose and creativity. They understand that they can be themselves. Even though we are longboarders, how we choose to ride is up to us and no one will judge us for it. It’s a good mirror for life. We are all humans, and how we choose to live and dress is our choice and no one should judge us for it – whether it be emo, punk, prep or anything else. These are the values I am trying to teach with L4P Houston. At L4P Houston we have had a wonderful outpouring of support, locals have come to teach, Carve has helped with helmets and time and MECA has given us a facility.

The program is growing every day and has a 100% retention rate. Not one single kid has dropped out or stopped coming. By the time you read this, we should be close to 50 strong. We have been doing slide clinics, board dancing and fundamentals like pumping, carving and stopping. The kids have grown not only as riders but also as people. It’s been absolutely fantastic and will continue to be – all thanks to the longboard and the longboard community.

I would like to thank all those involved, and I am sure I will forget some. But I am asking you to support these companies. Let them know you are supporting them because they support us. ISPO ARTIST SHOWCASE We met Nicolas Thomas doing a live painting of a lonely skateboarder.

THIS PAST FEBRUARY, Concrete Wave was fortunate to be a

part of ISPO, the largest sporting goods trade show in the world.

Held in Munich, the show is the equivalent of 14 trade shows that you’d find in the USA or Canada. It’s held at a former airport, and airplane hangars have been converted into cavernous display areas. In a word, it is simply MASSIVE. 108 CONCRETE WAVE SPRING 2013

Concrete Wave joined up with the good folks at 40inch Longboard Magazin, which is based in Germany. More than 60 different longboard companies were on display. Also on display were a number of truly world-class artists. We were completely blown away by the exhibit, which was curated by Spacejunk Art Centers. Of particular note was French artist Didier RA, who cobbles together bits and pieces to create fantastic sculptures that are truly mesmerizing.

Perhaps the most haunting artist we found was exReplacements drummer Chris Mars. We took a look at the artist statement from Chris and felt it was important to share: All art is political in some sense, be it through conformity, reflection, propaganda or rebellion. My paintings are rallies and trials, photographs of a moment when Truth was made public, and Mercy known.

Question why a villain is villainized, a victim martyred.

Ask why a group is demonized, and the motives for control. See for yourself what the truth looks like in your hands. Dig it up and hold it for a while. This work you see, it’s my Truth. But please don’t take my word for it. CW
