SHE LOVES YOU, YEAH, YEAH, YEAH Forever to be known as The Cute One, Sir Paul McCartney made another trip down the aisle, this time with New York socialite Nancy Shevell. Paul’s youngest daughter Beatrice was the flower girl, and guests included Ringo Starr, George Harrison’s widow Olivia, Paul’s brother Michael, and Barbara Walters – a distant cousin to Nancy. Hopefully the third time’s the charm for our favourite Mop Top. He was divorced from Heather Mills and widowed by long-time love Linda McCartney.

THE DEMON KISSed THE BRIDE Not one to rush things, Gene Simmons finally proposed to his long-time girlfriend and mother of his grown children, Shannon Tweed, this past October. The pair was married at the Beverly Hills Hotel among guests such as Playboy founder, Hugh Hefner. The wedding party included the couple’s daughter Sophie and fellow Kiss bandmate Paul Stanley. We’re guessing that they wanted to rock ‘n’ roll all night … and party every day.

Married in the summer and separated by autumn, the extravagant wedding of Kim Kardashian to Kris Humphries made tabloid news everywhere.

Whether it was a big mistake made in poor judgement or a Hollywood hoax to score more publicity and perhaps a payday, only the ex-bride and groom know for sure. At least the bride looked fabulous in three different Vera Wang wedding dresses and a gorgeous jewelled headpiece as she was married before a celeb-studded crowd of over 400 guests.

PUT A RING ON IT According to a recent engagement and jewellery survey, one in four grooms spent more than he originally budgeted. On average, couples are spending just under $5,200 on the engagement ring.

Whether they completely designed the ring or made custom changes to an existing design, approximately two out of five grooms (41%) are choosing to add personal elements to the engagement ring.

And the ring isn’t such a secret anymore. The majority of brides in the study are at least somewhat involved in the ring selection (65%), with nearly a third (31%) “very involved” – meaning they shopped for and/or purchased the ring with their grooms.

The majority of grooms are taking tradition to heart when they propose.

In fact, 77% of grooms proposed on bended knee (compared with 70% in 2009) and 71% asked the bride’s parents for permission before popping the question.

While a proposal is always an intimate moment, they’re increasingly becoming public affairs. In 2009, 68% of grooms proposed privately, while that number dropped to just over half (57%) in 2011. Perhaps that’s why 43% of grooms meticulously planned the proposal down to the last detail and only 10% of grooms “winged” it.

PHOTOGRAPHER GETS THE LAST SHOT UK newspaper, The Daily Mail, reported that a wedding photographer in Sicily died after suggesting that a bride and groom pose with guns for a photo and a rifle was accidentally fired, shooting the photographer.

Calogero Scimea, 45, died at the scene.

Valentina Anitra, 22, and Ignazio Licodia, 25, were posing for photos before the wedding near Palermo, Sicily, when Scimea reportedly suggested using guns as props. The guns were apparently licenced for hunting use.

It seems police are having trouble piecing together exactly what happened because most witnesses are reluctant to talk. The wedding was reportedly cancelled after the tragic incident because the bride and groom were too distraught to continue with what was supposed to have been a joyous occasion.

VERSATILITY You can take advantage of a golf and country club for your wedding in a number of ways. In the summer months, competition for banquet halls heats up. Here the number of golf resorts in Ontario works in the bride’s favour as she hunts for a venue for that perfect date. And just as importantly, golf and country clubs are the ideal venue for virtually any size party, allowing you to scale your event and your budget accordingly. “We have space for a ceremony of any size and style,” says Elizabeth Carnegie, Catering & Events Coordinator for Kaneff Golf. “From a traditional ceremony with 20 guests all the way to 200. We can even accommodate ethnic ceremonies, for example, providing a wedding mandap for our Hindi guests as well as other observances.”

PICKING YOUR VENUE This step will take you the longest and may feel frustrating. But the time you spend now will pay off in the long run, since selecting the perfect venue means that a lot of the other decisions about the facility, the cuisine and the dining experience are almost done.

First you will need to decide if you’re having the entire wedding at the golf club or just the reception. For some, this is a decision they sometimes make after seeing what their options are because churches and temples can be just as hard to book as banquet halls. ORGANIZING THE DAY Once you’ve spent the time surveying your options and choosing the perfect golf and country club, it’s time to bring the strategy to life. You will want to pick the right location within your golf venue. Even if your plans are to spend the entire day outside, you will want to make sure you’ve looked at your indoor options in the event of rain; all the best weddings have a Plan B. The golf and country club staff is your expert at finalizing these finer points. At Cranberry Golf Resort for example, Wedding Sales Manager Chantelle Poulin works directly with the couple planning their special day. Explains Shane Bage, Marketing Manager, “By arranging the floor plan, the set-up, the food menu and timing, Chantelle makes sure they have everything they need. On the day of the event, Chantelle confirms that everything is going as planned and she is there in case the bride and groom have any concerns or lastminute requirements.”

IRONING OUT THE DETAILS Flowers, decorations and lighting are all important considerations as well and, again, this is where the golf and country club can really help with your decisions. With a variety of rooms and facilities, they can match your wedding size and budget with the right space, decorated to meet your expectations.

In most cases, the on-site planner will guide you through the process of working out the table configurations and arrangements, the seating plans and the menu (from hors d’oeuvres to midnight snacks and all the courses in between). Most resorts will let you sample potential menus and work with you to determine the right décor, mood, and experience for your guests. Many can also co-ordinate a wedding photographer, videographer, and even the entertainment. The staff is highly adept at taking care of your guests so you don’t have to.

Amber & Jin MODERN NEWLYWEDS RESPECT TRADITIONAL VALUES IN GRACEFUL ESTATE WEDDING

H

OW DO YOU MEET THE LOVE of your life? For Amber Chang and Jin Jin, they didn’t, at first! With a wide circle of mutual friends, the demure couple originally “met” on Facebook! Explains Amber, “Facebook suggested, ‘You may know this person as you both attend the University of Toronto and share the same hometown,’ so that’s how we made it onto each other’s friends list.” Soon they started chatting, and eventually met in person at a summer festival in Toronto’s Little Italy.

It was a group-sized first date. Jin says, “I sent Amber a message on Facebook, asking if she would like to come out for a drink with some of our friends. She agreed and it was a fun night with drinks, snacks and lots of laughter in a local bar.” Amber says he made a great first impression. “He was very kind, friendly and outgoing – just being himself – which made me felt very comfortable. Afterwards he offered to walk me home.” Amber admits that if it had been a movie, there might have been a goodnight kiss, but “it’s a Chinese thing” to want to take things very slowly.

The couple claim it was love at first sight.

Amber says, “When we met in person and talked, we looked into each other’s eyes and there was this sparkle between us. I felt butterflies in my stomach. Conversation flowed naturally, and even though it was our first meeting we seemed to have a lot to talk about.” Jin agreed, adding, “Amber is really cute, sweet and easy-going. We had chemistry right away!”

One Valentine’s Day, they went for dinner at Red Lobster. Jin prepared a little note and secretly inserted it into a fortune cookie. He had the chef put the cookie on the dessert they ordered.

Amber eventually dug out the note from the cookie to read her fortune: Would you like to marry me? I will always love you. Amber gave Jin a big yes and he happily put an engagement ring on her finger.

Having a formal garden wedding in the beautiful garden of Graydon Hall was a stroke of luck. The traditional home-like mansion was only available on one Saturday in June, which just happened to be their ideal wedding date (6 and 8 are Chinese lucky numbers). The couple says the location was easy for their friends to get to, and had a great website and photos, making their online research a breeze.

Amber appeared on a Juliet balcony that was adorned with a heart of flowers. Her softly flowing Mori Lee gown was complemented by a nine-footlong veil with a silver edge finish, and her silver platform heels had a playful rose accent at the toe.

The groom stood tall and smiling in his Hugo Boss tuxedo. Amber says she loves his smile. “He is loving, caring, protective, smart, optimistic, sincere, gentle ... to me, he is perfect.”

The couple may seem quiet, but actually, Amber says they have a goofy side too. “We tease each other and play like kids do. We make up our own words that no one else understands. These little things constantly remind us how happy we are together.”

Amber eventually dug out the note from the cookie to read her fortune: Would you like to marry me?

a real-life wedding This playfulness showed up in their wedding vows, with Amber professing “to tease and to cuddle” and “to load you with snacks and food as long as we both shall live” along with her more serious sentiments.

The both cried during their vows, especially when Jin said, “I take you to be my wedded wife, to be none other than yourself. I promise to stand by your side; to encourage you, and be open and honest with you; to laugh and to cry with; to nurture and to grow with you, throughout the seasons of life.”

After a welcoming peach and lemonade mocktail, seventy guests were seated for an elegant luncheon in grand style that included delicious selections of lobster gratin and seared tuna sashimi, roast beef with horseradish, chicken roulade with spinach and asiago cheese, served with potato gnocchi and grilled seasonal vegetables. “Simply amazing,” said Jin. The live music was provided by a classical string quartet.

The father of the bride had a few words of wisdom for Jin in his speech. He said he knew from experience that, “To make a marriage last, you have to be a man, be great in your job and do the dishes!”

To top off the special day, guests enjoyed a slice of the sixtiered white and silver wedding cake, with different flavours of mixed berry shortcake and dark chocolate mousse, served with fresh berries and ice cream. “Heavenly!” says Amber.

The newly married couple were grateful that both sets of parents travelled all the way from Beijing, China just to bless their marriage. To celebrate their new family the couple and their parents went on a trip together after the wedding. “We toured mostly in Ontario and Quebec, staying the longest in Toronto and the Thousand Islands, as it was the first time our parents visited here. We wanted them to know more about the place we live in – Canada is a gigantic, beautiful country – so we wanted to show them!”

NYC STYLE T-DOT TRENDSETTERS CAN FIND INSPIRATION FROM BIG APPLE BRIDES FOR A METROPOLITAN WEDDING WITH FLAIR

ew York City is synonymous with high fashion. Brides across the U.S. and Canada look to The Big Apple for the newest trends. Wedding Essentials spoke to insiders about what’s hot for the upcoming season, and one word came up again and again: individuality The New York bride wants to stand apart from her friends. Everyone wants a sexy gown, sophisticated décor and a fabulous honeymoon, but a Gotham girl wants a little more — those few unique elements which none of her girlfriends had at their weddings.

Canadian ladies can have a New York-style wedding easier than you might think!

THE GOWN Customizing the gown is the first step. Jennette Kruszka, Director of Marketing and Public Relations at Kleinfeld Bridal in New York, says that brides who attend their trunk shows often consult with the designers to customize a gown. Combining the bodice of one with the skirt of another and the fabric of yet another can result in a one-of-a-kind dress for a fraction of the cost of a designer original.

Kleinfeld has seen a huge increase in business with the popularity of the hit TV show, Say Yes to the Dress. Kruszka laughs, “I come into the store and the place is already packed before I’ve even had my coffee!” She says there’s also been an increase in Canadian customers. “One girl drove the ten hours from Toronto just to buy at the store!”

You don’t have to travel to Manhattan to get a custom look. Canada has many fashionable wedding gown designers, too numerous to name, who can offer you a wealth of choices to create your perfect gown. Discovering an emerging designer can help ensure you won’t see the same gown on any of your friends!

At New York’s International Bridal Fashion Week, the big trend for 2012 is texture — moulded, three-dimensional structure and cascading details like bows or flowers.

Feathers and tulle add fun and volume to the gowns. The corset bodice also makes a big comeback, adding texture with laces, boning and beading.

A new, ladylike vibe was in the air too. Lace sleeves, keyhole backs and illusion necklines wowed the crowds, influenced in part by Kate Middleton’s stunning Sarah Burton gown. Of the many gorgeous dresses floating down runways, perennial favourites were still visible: strapless gowns, sweetheart necklines and mermaid silhouettes are all top sellers.

You might choose a heavier satin for a winter wedding, or a light organza for summer, but the shape and details are what matter. Kruszka says, “Brides always come in saying, ‘I don’t want strapless. Everyone has strapless.’ And in the end, they walk out with a strapless gown.”

Lea-Ann Belter, a Canadian designer whose line is available across Canada, the USA and the UK, agrees that the style has become a bridal staple. “Strapless gowns started selling well in early 2000, and we thought it would last a few years, but now it seems that strapless is here to stay.” The majority of gowns in her newest line are also strapless.

Another fresh bridal fashion trend is colour. Several designers sent light-coloured gowns down the runway in a variety of off-white and gentle hues. Vera Wang surprised many by adding a black gown to the colour palette. Of course there were plenty of white dresses, but even the traditional white gown got an update with a boldly coloured sash or bejewelled belt.

The trend toward shorter lengths started a few years ago, and Belter comments that shorter designs “are getting a great response, and brides can showcase a fun, unusual shoe with it.”

New York boutique owner, Erica Chasto of The White Gown, says this fashion shows no sign of slowing. “Brides always explore the idea of a full-length gown first, but many end up with cocktail length.”

Chasto and Belter both agree that downtown clients are often artsy and eclectic. They lean toward simple silhouettes, made special with one unique detail and statement accessories. Big cities like New York and Toronto offer endless shopping possibilities, and Chasto says that accessorizing is part of the fun for any bride.

THE ACCESSORIES Bling is the thing. Beaded belts and a stunning necklace can make any gown unique. Brides are passing up the classic pearls for bolder pieces. Your neck, wrist and waist offer fantastic opportunities for customizing a gown, turning an off-the-rack beauty into your one-of-a-kind personal statement.

Not to mention the shoes! “Girls will reduce their dress budget so they can afford Louboutins,” laughs Chasto.

Kruszka adds that coloured shoes are still ontrend for next year. Whether they are your “something blue,” or they match your bridesmaids’ dresses, coloured shoes are in.

As for veils, let your hairstyle dictate what you wear. Not every bride chooses a traditional veil.

There’s a trend toward long, loose romantic hair, with a gorgeous headband across the top. Birdcage veils are still very popular, and they go great with a sweeping up-do.

Overall, bridal consultants encourage you to keep an open mind. Let your consultant guide you to choices you may not have considered. Kruszka says 95% of her customers walk out of the store with something completely different from what they expected to buy.

THE VENUE One way to personalize a ceremony is to have it in a non-traditional setting. Traditional venues in big cities can be expensive, get booked quickly and come with tight restrictions. New York brides delight in discovering unique venues.

There are several advantages to having your wedding outdoors, in a theatre, at a friend’s home or in a public space. It’s something no one else has done, they’re often less expensive, and they’re not booked up years in advance.

Toronto and New York City have plenty of bigcity similarities. If you’d like the feel of renting the famous Reading Room at the New York Public Library (at $50,000 for three hours), try booking the newest space at the Toronto Reference Library (for under $5,000). Want a small wedding party to gather in a chic café in Little Italy? Toronto can do that. How about a hip restaurant in Chinatown?

Check that box too.

No matter what your downtown city desire is – art gallery, museum, historical buildings or vintage, boutique hotels – you can find many venues in and around Toronto with that sexy cosmopolitan vibe.

For example, the AGO, ROM and CN Tower all have unique spaces for a reception, as do intimate downtown hotels like the Windsor Arms and Hazelton Hotel. Spend a little time wandering your city and use your imagination to unearth hidden venue gems.

The newest trend in NYC receptions is a cocktail hour before the ceremony. In a city known for its traffic jams and subway delays (sound familiar, Torontonians?), a cocktail hour before the ceremony gives guests some leeway in case of travel delays, and lets them spend more time with visiting family and friends.

For after the ceremony, entertainment stations are big for 2012. A game room, a photo booth or a karaoke machine gives you a reception as individual as you are. Include your favourite hobbies and activities in various locations around the reception.

Two stations are must-haves: the Welcome station and the Good Night station. Set the mood for the evening with an interactive guest book – where people can include a favourite poem or funny memory when they sign in. At the end of the night, send your guests off with swag bags of personalized goodies, like cookies with icing monograms, or samples of your favourite wine and chocolates.

THE FOOD Both formal dinners and buffet menus will always be in vogue, but serving tapas is an economical trend in New York. Let your guests mingle right from the start of the reception, as servers circulate with appetizers, small dishes and specialty cocktails all night long.

Food stations can also feature more elaborate selections, like a fondue fountain, candy counter or a wine-tasting table.

BEFORE AND AFTER There are two big trends for events surrounding your wedding day. The first is a combination bridal shower/bachelorette party. New Yorkers have friends and family scattered across the globe. Brides often combine the bridal shower and the bachelorette party into one big event the day before the wedding. This lets your guests travelling in from Nova Scotia or Vancouver attend all of your parties, instead of having to choose between events on different weekends.

The other trend is a delayed honeymoon.

More and more couples honeymoon weeks or months after the wedding. This takes advantage of off-season travel, and gives you time to rest up after the wedding!

The key to a unique wedding is to know who you are and know what you like. For your downtown wedding with NYC style, keep an eye on the coming trends, and then add your own unique twists. You’ll have a wedding that you and your guests won’t ever forget.  Wedding Essentials 2012 51

fter spying Adriana taking riding lessons on his parents’ horse farm, Adam was smitten right away and would visit each Thursday just to see her. Several months later, his family asked Adriana to join them for dinner to introduce her to Adam. They’ve been together ever since.

When hiking through the farm one evening, Adam “found” an abandoned guitar case by an old mill. Adriana insisted he leave it alone, but Adam took out the guitar and played “Never Let You Go”

by New Zealand band Evermore. Then he rummaged through the case and pulled out an engagement ring!

The natural setting of the proposal was reflected in their wedding décor. Adriana carried a wildflower bouquet as they were married in a quaint country church with stained glass windows and wooden pews. The celebration continued at the Ancaster Old Mill, which boasts original wooden beams and a large stone fireplace with a solarium and a waterfall. Guests mingled both indoors and out. The couple made their own centrepieces from cut logs, birch branches and mushroom birds in earthy colours of blue, brown and cream. Even the cake sprouted branches and birds! Guests were given favours of blue spruce saplings.

I love her because Adriana is adventurous, fun-loving and has the best sense of humour I’ve ever found in another person. And she will always give me the last pickle.

I love him because Adam’s passion, whether it is for a certain cause, his family, his music, or anything is inspiring and contagious.

Most importantly, he loves me unconditionally.

We laughed to see our very young ring bearer, Dezmond, laughing all day; from when he ran down the aisle to a dinky car placed at the front of the church, to his dancing at the reception.

I cried when Adam played the song he had written for me during our ceremony, and I could tell he was choked up from the moment I walked down the aisle until he took my hand from my father.

Sage advice from Adriana: “Don’t sweat the small stuff; it really doesn’t matter when the day actually comes.” And Adam says, “Chill out, it will make the day more fun!”

W

ith many people choosing to get married later in life, it has become commonplace for marriage to symbolize more than uniting your future lives together; it is also typically the literal combination of two households, furniture and all.

If you and your future spouse have both been living in your own apartments, the odds are that you also both own furniture. Your existing furnishings may fill a room, an apartment or even a large home. And those furnishings are likely of some monetary or emotional value to you.

The problem? Your darling husband-to-be feels the same way about his belongings!

You may find yourself in the fortunate state of having the exact same taste and style in your décor preferences.

If that is the case, you need only decide which pieces fill the various spaces in your new home.

But more likely, things are not quite that easy. You may have some delicate, feminine pieces inherited from a favourite family member and will not part with them.

In fact, they must be prominently displayed! He has a huge TV, surround sound system, and well-worn leather sofas that scream “bachelor!” Or there may be a huge library of books or collectables to consider if one of you feels they will only add clutter.

How do you combine what you have so that you both feel comfortable and at home in your new shared space without entering a battle zone?

START WITH THE BASICS Start by readjusting your outlook. Rather than thinking of the merger as a daunting and painful process, regard it as the exciting, fun experience that it should be.

Have an open and honest discussion about how you want your new shared space to look and feel. Review and assess what you both have in terms of functionality, comfort, need and scale.

Some pieces may be too large or small for the new space.

If it won’t fit through the doors, or would look dwarfed or overpowering in the room, why even consider it? Remove it from the list of pieces to move with you.

It may be that your partner will surprise you and say one or more of her furniture pieces are beyond their useful life and should not be included in the move. Or that he wants to start fresh and eliminate the mismatched hand-me-downs.

Once you have your list of potential items to move, you may both agree that bed #1 will be used in the master bedroom and that sofa #3 is the best choice for the family room.

Assess each room in a similar fashion. You may be surprised by how many items stand out as being ideal for one space or another and how quickly you’ll whittle down the list.

Edit and eliminate things you will not use and consider donating castaways in decent shape to The Furniture Bank or some other worthy foundation. Giving back to the community will make you feel good and will start your new home off with some great karma.

LEARN TO COMPROMISE There are times when you must assess what is most important to you and what you can and cannot live with – or without. Your spouse, hopefully, is included on that list!

Note that compromise is not telling him he can have a corner of the house to do with as he pleases to create a “man cave.” It is about communicating and working as a team to create your ideal home environment. So let go of any ego and stubbornness and be open to discussion and varying points of view.

If your partner will use the office space more than you, is there a need to insist the room be completed your way?

Admit it: you love the idea of having a home theatre system! So that huge flat screen is actually perfect. It just isn’t appropriate in the bedroom at the foot of your bed. Perhaps a section of the basement could be transformed into a fabulous media room/home theatre? That would leave the main floor available for a living room that encourages conversation and entertaining.

And those chairs might not be the nicest thing to look at, but they are comfortable and possess a certain charm and style about them that is irreplaceable. They would make a statement in that little reading nook ... .

Consider accent walls or accessories in bolder tones or patterns if one of you favours neutral and/or non-patterned schemes. Play with layering and adding in textures to create more depth.

The bottom line? Be realistic. Set your respective priorities in terms of functional spaces, must-haves, and nice-tohaves, and work together to plan and put it all together.

home & décor IN FACT, MIXING AND MATCHING STYLES TENDS TO ADD MORE CHARACTER AND PERSONALITY TO SPACES. WORK WITH WHAT YOU’VE GOT Embrace the unique pieces that come with your partner and that carry importance to him or her, especially if it is a family heirloom. Be open to exploring how pieces might fit and to recreating or repurposing furnishings so that they become something you both love and cherish.

Wood can be re-finished or painted to completely change the look of a piece. Swap the hardware for something new that melds with the rest of your home or your combined style. Remove cabinet doors or turn bookcases on their sides. Consider reupholstering seating to bring it back to life and make it “ours” instead of “yours.”

A huge trend right now is taking more traditionally-styled chairs, painting the frame in an unexpected colour or finish, and covering the seat with a modern fabric. The look is stunning! And it easily bridges time periods and helps marry convergent styles.

Look at things with fresh eyes and don’t feel you need to place an item in the bedroom just because it is part of your bedroom suite. That dresser might be the perfect statement piece for the front hallway! Let it double as valuable storage for hats, gloves, keys, and other miscellaneous items that will help keep things neatly in place.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO STICK TO ONE DESIGN STYLE In fact, mixing and matching styles tends to add more character and personality to spaces – your home will be uniquely yours and your partner’s rather than looking like a replica of a retail showroom floor.

If you look at many rooms designed by decorators or designers, you’ll notice that most are veering away from matched sets. The nightstands need not match the bed frame. Nightstands might not even be practical pieces for you based on your needs and the size of the space. Who says you can’t combine your leather headboard with mirrored storage cabinets for a look that reflects you both?

Remember: functionality is critical if your space is to function well! Pieces that function in harmony will naturally fit together.

A stately grandfather clock in the same room as modern seating? Why not? Create unity and visual flow through the use of colour, texture or even repetitive accessories. Take a chance and see how things look when paired together. And remember – if you don’t like it, move it to another space!

ASK FOR HELP If the process is too overwhelming or is causing strife between you and your beloved, call in a professional. Yes, a decorator or designer comes with a fee and you have wedding expenses, a honeymoon and a new mortgage to think about. But even one consultation can go a long way, especially if it keeps you both happy and on speaking terms!

Most design professionals are accustomed to mediating disputes between partners. It is their job to listen to what you both want and to blend the two together to create a fabulous, cohesive space you both love and where you feel at home.

FRESH EYES SEE MORE CLEARLY See what is available in your area and choose what works best for you. Perhaps the decorator walks you through the process of deciding what to keep and comes up with a floor plan that shows where everything will go before you even move in. All you would need to do is label boxes for each space and the move becomes a breeze.

Having someone else look at your combined furnishings can make it easier to see what works for you as a couple. Redesigning a space or moving furniture can change how you use the space more effectively. Sometimes even a simple colour consultation can help find the right backdrop to partner your furniture pieces successfully. You may be able to give your roomful of functional older pieces a renewed, cohesive look by adding accents such as rugs, curtains or artwork.

Take the time to sort through the basics and compromise with one another. he Canadian Forces pilot surprised Polina with a proposal at the dinner table on New Year’s Eve. Surrounded by knowing friends, Polina remained clueless as they made little jokes about “the question.” When she turned to Vadim and discovered him on one knee, Polina describes the feeling as surreal. “I think the time continuum slowed down when he opened a little turquoise box and asked if I would marry him.”

The bride and groom opted for an intimate wedding; inviting 35 close family and friends to witness the exchange of vows at Toronto City Hall, with a sunset cruise to follow. Lovely hydrangeas anchored the royal blue and cream table linens. Everyone played games while the DJ, a close friend, kept them dancing all night. Polina’s favourite memory is of their first dance, “You and I” by Michael Bublé, with the Toronto skyline twinkling in the background.

I love her because when she walks into any room, it lights up and everyone smiles. She is beautiful, smart, gentle and altruistic. In short, she is greater than life itself.

I love him because he is so thoughtful of me and others. There is always that sense of being a team in our relationship. He respects and loves me the way I am, despite my quirky ways, and that means the world to me.

We laughed when Vadim was saying his vows; he goofed up a line and everyone had a good laugh, even the officiant. We had a lot of funny moments when some guests had their share of hula-hoop contest mishaps.

We cried when Vadim’s mom was making a speech. I think everyone had a tear to shed by the time she was done, even Vadim.

Sage advice from Polina: “In the end, you will not remember all the small details that a lot of couples bicker about. You will remember the funny moments, the sweet moments. Make sure those memories are well captured.”

ogether they embody the image of “high school sweethearts.”

Matt and Kristen have been part of each other’s lives since seventh grade and grew up together. They started dating seriously after high school and they both knew this was it – they were in love.

Enroute to a weekend getaway, Matt decided to stop in Niagara Falls, the site of their very first trip together. By the light of the moonlight as it shimmered through the mist of the Falls, he asked Kristen to marry him.

Water was also an element at their wedding, when they selected the elegant waterfront venue, Atlantis, for their black-and-white themed reception. And later still, as they couple sat together at their sweetheart table, they could hear music drifting from the nearby Amphitheatre — David Gray was singing “Sail Away”— and it’s one of Kristen’s fondest memories of the evening.

The couple looked glamorous, and Kristen carried a special something old, her Oma’s hand-embroidered handkerchief. As they danced the night away, guests stopped to enjoy a late night snack of mini roti and McDonald’s cheeseburgers!

I love her because Kristen always puts me first, and because she loves me no matter what. I love her because I know she will be a great mom, and because she is so cute!

I love him because Matt makes me laugh, and he makes me feel like nothing terrible will ever happen because we have each other. He is so easy to love; he is kind and sweet and just amazing.

We laughed at the “kissing game” dances. To get us to kiss, guests had to make up and perform a dance. It was hilarious!

We cried more at the rehearsal dinner than at the wedding! On the day, we managed to keep our composure … for the most part.

Sage advice from the bride: “Enjoy every single minute of your big day – it goes by in a flash! And don’t sweat the planning. Everything will work out as it should.”

Keep in mind two important thoughts as you select your music: • Let the music reflect your own unique personality. This is your wedding. You don’t need to follow the current wedding trends or old wedding traditions. You don’t need to cave in to the wishes of others, either.

• Select the music that you love! What kind of music do you and your fiancé enjoy the most? What type of instrumentation do you like? What do you dance to? What music is on your iPod or mp3 player?

What does your favorite radio station play on your commute to and from work? What music do you never tire of hearing?

Have you selected a wedding theme? Here are some thematic ideas and examples of ways that music can accommodate them:  Music to reflect the things you enjoy— Use the music to paint a picture of the personalities of the two of you. For instance, if you are a fan of Disney movies, include Disney music within each event at your wedding.  Music to match your wedding location— Complement your wedding scene with your music choices. Getting married on the beach? You could choose ‘60s surfer tunes. If you are planning a destination wedding, select music that is popular in the location or use music that describes the scenery.

 Music to honour your religious background—The music that you grew up hearing in synagogue, singing in church, chanting in temple may have specific importance to you. If you’re exchanging vows inside a house of worship, you could weave sacred melodies throughout your ceremony. You can also carry this religious theme into your reception, including modern popular Christian songs, for instance.  Music to celebrate your ethnicity—Let the music highlight your heritage. Are you planning a traditional Scottish wedding, where the gentlemen will be wearing kilts?

Consider being led down the aisle by a bagpiper. Of course, the musicians can also dress according to your ethnic theme—think of the colour that a mariachi band adds to a Hispanic wedding.  Period music for a period wedding— Choose a time in history and design your entire wedding around that period. You and your guests can wear costumes of that era, dine on food that may have been eaten at that time, and listen to music that was fashionable then. Your musicians can visually fit into the theme as well—they can wear vintage costumes as they perform.

Popular themes include Victorian weddings, medieval Romeo and Juliet weddings, and Renaissance weddings.  Music for a holiday celebration—If you are getting married on or around a holiday—Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Fourth of July, Saint Patrick’s Day, or even Halloween—make your wedding music part of the festivities.  Music to reflect the season—There are many songs written about spring, summer, fall, and winter.  Song titles that mirror your wedding themes—What if blue is your main wedding colour? Use tunes with that colour in the title (“Blue Moon,” for example). If your theme revolves around roses, use tunes that include the word “rose” in the title (like “La Vie en Rose”).

Whatever your wedding theme, it’s almost a sure bet you can find a song title to match it.

By the way, there is no rule that says that you can’t mix and match these themes. Who says you can’t have a backyard barbecue following a formal Catholic wedding Mass?

Have fun and come up with some ideas that will make you say, “I can’t wait to hear the music at my wedding!” 

ou’ve just announced your exciting news to the whole world. And now, everyone – yes, everyone – wants to help you plan your big day. Ignoring calls and email will keep them at bay for only so long.

Ah, here they come now, knocking at your door to show you the season’s latest wedding creations, feeding you sample slabs of cake, and tossing a variety of flower petals for your inspection.

Everyone means well. But that doesn’t necessarily help you, does it? Like all experiences, the planning of your wedding can be thrilling, but it can also be filled with surprises, headaches, and challenges. The initial stages of planning a wedding are the most demanding.

But once you get your feet wet, you will start to feel comfortable in your new role. Before you know it, the church bells will be ringing.

FAMILY: INTRODUCING THE MOTHER OF THE BRIDE Nothing will make your mother happier than to hear you utter those memorable words: “I’m getting married!”

But in her excitement, Mom might forget to reveal the countless ways a wedding can engulf an innocent bride and rob her of her sanity. You may even discover your mother is at the centre of the frenzy, volunteering her opinions and advice on absolutely every detail and decision.

Of course your cousin will be a bridesmaid!

Fish? You can’t serve fish at a wedding.

DON’T TRY TO PLEASE EVERYONE Unless you’re planning to elope, weddings tend to snowball into big operations. Even if you’re as sensitive as Mother Theresa and as savvy a host as Martha Stewart, a bride cannot possibly meet everyone’s needs. Dr. Hill suggests you don’t even try. Here’s something your mother won’t tell you: Everyone who comes to your wedding is there for his or her own reasons. (Let’s hope one of those reasons is to wish you well.)

So what do you do? Sometimes the answer is to keep a wedding small, and invite only those who truly want to witness the ritual. But no matter the size of your wedding, the allimportant question to ask yourself is what does your wedding day mean to you and your groom? Of course you want everyone to have a good time, but maybe the mariachi band your mother-in-law hired doesn’t quite harmonize with your dream of a string quartet.

“Organize your wedding around the intrinsic meaning,” Hill says, “and if you make it about you and your partner, then a lot of other people’s priorities fall away; that thing about perfection falls away.”

NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO LAUNCH YOUR ONE-WOMAN SHOW There is nothing simple about throwing a wedding for 400 of your closest friends. So if your bank manager gives you the thumbs up, consider hiring a wedding planner who is a skilled negotiator, delegator, and problem

solver. “They know how to deal with other people,” says Hill, “so you can focus on what it is you really want.”

If the bank manager balks when sifting through your wedding budget, consider the support systems in your life. Short of running a background check on your future sister-inlaw, ask for help from only those you think will truly support your wishes. Not every offer of help is based on sound judgement or careful consideration of your needs. Always be clear and specific about the help you need and be certain that the friends and family you choose are up for the challenge. Your painfully shy sister may not thrive as the master of ceremonies, so spare her the agony and find another way to include her in the wedding.

WHAT TO DO WHEN MOM CAMPAIGNS TO BE YOUR WEDDING PLANNER Now is as good a time as any to start drawing boundaries. Ask yourself the big question: What about your wedding day really matters to you? Pick three things, maybe the strapless dress, the midnight dessert station, and the list of speakers, and then own these. The rest of the pie can be divided up as you see fit.

Know that everything will not be perfectly to your liking, and that’s okay because your three core areas are still safe. If you feel pressure from a friend or family member, say, your mother, Hill suggests you delegate a task that you are not particular about — just don’t advertise it that way. “If you don’t care what the centrepiece looks like, let her pick; let her or-

Even if you prioritize your to-do list and resolve to remain calm the day will not unfold exactly as planned. “There are so many aspects you can’t control,” says Hill, “every wedding has a hitch.” Even yours. So go ahead and ask the photographer to snap photos while you pose in the garden at the exact moment the sun starts to set, but if torrential rains shower upon you, you might want to consider learning how to go with the flow and take cozy, dramatic pictures under a nearby gazebo instead, or break out brightly coloured umbrellas, and smile.

For some brides, this is a steep learning curve, but ultimately, the bride sets the mood. If she freaks out because the flowers haven’t arrived at the hall, people will pick up on her reaction and feed off of it. Likewise, the bride who hikes up her train before marching into the kitchen to complain about the soup is going to raise a few eyebrows among the guests. The key is to tune out the distractions, even though “a wedding is nonstop busyness,” says Hill. Musicians tune their instruments, waiters circle the tables looking for empty plates — and one person after another swoops in with demands and distractions. If a bride allows herself to become side-tracked by all this activity, then it’s easy for the bride to forget the real reason why she is getting married.

WHEN IN DOUBT – SEEK OUT THE GROOM The calmest person in the vicinity of the church and hall is the good-looking guy in the tux — the guy you forgot to consult about the wedding plans. His stopwatch is set to go off two hours before boarding the plane to paradise. Says Hill: “Grooms are grounded; look at them; they know it’s not about the day, it’s about what comes after.” Try to keep your wedding in perspective and focus on your partner.

And when you finally see him, reach for his hand and don’t let him go. You are about to experience the most important revelation of them all. You will not hear any voices telling you that you made it. But you did. So hum that little Bobby McFerrin tune under your breath, and don’t worry. Be happy. 

CHAMPAGNE for Your Wedding ORIGIN Selecting the right effervescent is a must for your wedding as it is the first bottle to be opened, but not all bubbly is the same! While there are many quality sparkling wines produced around the world, true champagne only comes from Champagne, France.

CHAMPAGNE STYLES There are a variety of champagne styles available, from full- to light-bodied, vintage to rosé, as well as various levels of sweetness. One fun way of finding out which champagne is right for your wedding is to host a champagne-tasting party as a bridesmaids’ activity. Using half bottles is a great way to cut costs while exploring the diversity of champagne.

Levels of sweetness vary: Brut Natural (bone dry), Extra Brut (very dry), Brut (very dry to dry — most popular), Extra Sec (medium dry), Sec (medium sweet), Demi-Sec (sweet, considered a dessert wine) and Doux (luscious, considered a dessert wine) — keep this in mind when ordering.

Types of champagne include blanc de blancs, which is made entirely from the Chardonnay grape. These champagnes are light, elegant and refreshing.

A richer style is blanc de noir, made entirely from Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes. This champagne has a dark gold colour with the slightest tinge of pink.

And, finally, rosé champagne. The winemaker adds a small amount of Pinot Noir to base the wine blend.

SERVING • Champagne should be well-chilled. This can be done by placing the bottle in a bucket of ice and water for 30 minutes prior to serving.

• Use tall, tulip or flute glasses that catch and promote bubbles and concentrate its aromas, while improving the experience. Saucer-type glasses should not be used as they cause the bubbles to disappear rapidly and are awkward to hold.

very bride wants fantastic flowers, but a roomful of blooms can sometimes test your budget. If you’re considering making your own, we’ve got the styles and suggestions to help you do it right.

TRENDS Colour Florists everywhere are breathing a sigh of relief. The chocolate brown trend is finally over.

Brides are returning to more vivid colour choices, and florists such as Kate Seaver of Kate’s Garden in Markham have seen a huge interest in purple this year. “Purple, celadon green and pale pink has been a popular combination; we’ve seen less lavender and more of the deep purples with pale purple accents, with lots of green and white, definitely,” she says.

Some floral trends always seem to fall in line with the seasons. Fall weddings tend to get more harvest colours: orange, rust and gold. Winter weddings close to Christmas are typically red, green and white. February weddings often go with a Valentine palette of red, pink and white.

Spring and summer blooms offer brides a riot of seasonal colour choices, and it seems that bright hues will continue to rise in popularity, especially as dress designers are adding more colour to wedding gowns.

Says Seaver: “Despite what may be in the bridal magazines, we’re not seeing cascading or teardrop bouquets; my brides all want the rounded bouquets with button cuffs (button trim added to the ribbons tied around the stems). This style is still going strong.”

A modern way to add sparkle and personality to your flowers is by using floral jewellery, in shapes like dragonflies or butterflies for example, that you can pin onto the ribbon or magnetically click onto vases.

Blooms Flower choice depends on the season, but typically roses and hydrangeas continue to be very popular with brides. Calla lilies also continue to be in high demand. Seaver notes that they work well in tall, rectangular vases for centrepieces, giving a hip, modern look and clean lines. This trend is holding, and florists are using other varieties of lilies as well.

SAVINGS TRICKS Stay Seasonal Florists know that sometimes brides have their hearts set on something, but a flower out of season can cost nearly triple the price and they don’t perform as well. Seaver explains, “Even if you try and get a flower like a peony two weeks after the season (they dry up by end of June), if your wedding is in July you can expect to pay double or triple to have them shipped in from Holland.” Use what’s available locally and save yourself the extra expense.

Triple duty Florists who have a bride on a budget get creative to fully utilize every item. Seaver calls it “triple-duty.” She may suggest that her bride buy two beautiful urns, and then fill them with live plants as opposed to a cut flower arrangement. “We’ll do a beautiful grass, and mums and willow branches and pansies and all that good stuff, and the urns will be used to delineate the sacred place for the ceremony.” Afterward, they are brought to the reception and used at the entrance or by the head table. Outdoor venues It depends on the setting, but a bride can cut floral costs by having an outdoor wedding.

Seaver says, “If they choose a country club setting, obviously the country clubs and golf courses really do a lot of work to try and make their grounds spectacular. So often I try to encourage brides to use what’s available; see if you can move some of the pots around, so to speak, so that you’re benefitting from what they offer.” Hopefully a bride can reduce some flower expenses with an outdoor wedding because you can take advantage of the existing gardens and floral settings.

Head table The Head Table is getting an easy, cost-saving new look. According to Seaver, brides aren’t buying traditional head table arrangements as they used to do. “Most modern brides are getting nice little 8” vases and having the bridesmaids use them to put their bouquets in – it’s a fantastic look, it fills up the head table beautifully, it makes those flowers perform well, and it’s a cost saver for them.” It’s a fashion trend that’s practical and makes sense to have your flowers serve multiple purposes.

Some flower shops offer workshops that can teach you to make your own bouquets and centrepieces. Kate’s Garden also extends the opportunity for a group to come together with a professional to prepare the flowers for the wedding on the day before. Called a Posse Workshop, the bridal party (often armed with muffins and mimosas) will spend the morning together cutting, trimming and creating beautiful arrangements.

The savings to a wedding budget can be pretty impressive! Seaver estimates that brides can shave up to 30% off their original floral costs by going the almost-do-it-yourself route.

Posse Workshops work best with a small bridal party (5 to 7 women) with two professional florists and an assistant working with them. Women learn how to prepare, trim, defoliate and assemble the flowers. Seaver stresses that the flowers look professionally done, “Because let’s face it, it’s our reputation too, so we make certain it doesn’t leave the studio unless it looks absolutely prime.” And the bride still gets bragging rights to say, “I did my own flowers.”  Wedding Essentials 2012 85

hen that wedding march begins, a bride knows it’s time to face the music – and a good number of her family and friends as well. With all eyes on her, every bride needs to look as good as she feels; and this includes the perfect dress, the perfect jewellery and perfect skin.

A healthy complexion can be hard to come by if you suffer from rosacea. Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that affects more than two million Canadians, mainly women, but also men in the 30 to 50 year age category.

Symptoms include red and inflamed skin around the cheeks, nose and forehead. Because of the closeness in appearance, it is often misdiagnosed as adult acne.

Dr. Jason Rivers, an experienced dermatologist at Pacific Dermaesthetics in Vancouver, works with rosacea patients on a daily basis.

“Rosacea may be hard to hide from,” says Rivers. “And it can be psychologically devastating. Unfortunately, it can worsen over time.”

Besides redness, another common side effect is embarrassment. Rivers has seen many patients experience stigmatization, lowered self-esteem and a feeling that their condition marginalizes them from society.

“We don’t know what causes rosacea, but most people who suffer from it also have sensitive skin,” says Rivers. “It is more common for fair-skinned people, and people of northern European descent are vulnerable.”

Although there is no known cure for rosacea, symptoms can be relieved and controlled. Here are some ways to reduce outbreaks and face the world with a smile.

KEEP OUT OF THE SUN. Avoid excessive exposure; heat aggravates rosacea and can cause flare ups. Try to stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. In general, patients with rosacea may find it’s easier to avoid the sun and seek shade or by using protective coverings such as wide-brimmed hats. It may feel annoying, but the precautions you take will help avoid damage from the sun as well as minimize common symptoms.

AVOID ALCOHOL. Everyone likes to have a drink or two at a wedding – that includes the bride and groom – but if you’re suffering from rosacea, drinking should be the last thing on your list. Instead, take in a lot of water; it’s helpful to drink up to 12 glasses daily. If you want to drink coffee, tea or a pop, it’s best to chill it in the refrigerator first.

RELAX. Do whatever you can to de-stress before your big day: yoga, a workout, your favourite hobby, reading or meditation.

SPICE UP YOUR WEDDING NIGHT, NOT YOUR CATERING. Hot sauces, peppers (including black pepper), spicy seasonings, along with vegetables commonly found in spicy meals like tomatoes, avocados, citrus fruits, meat marinades and even cheese are some of the worst offenders. Instead, stock up on whole grains, seeds, nuts and plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit.

KEEP YOUR SKIN FRESH AND HYDRATED. Drinking lots of water and eating fresh, healthy foods are always helpful.

Consider cool water washes and the use of moisturizers to improve the water retention of the skin. Of course sunscreen of at least 30 SPF is essential. Try to avoid using chemical sunscreens; chemical sunscreens avoid sun rays, causing skin to retain more heat, aggravating rosacea flare-ups. Follow the same guidelines when it comes to make-up as well.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT PRODUCTS. The doctor recommends products that contain no dyes or allergens.

Some traditional oral antibiotics that are commonly used to treat rosacea can make your skin more sensitive to sun. A gentle skin care line is the way to go. Dr. Rivers suggests finding a product that contains thujaplicin, which is derived from the western red cedar tree. It’s been proven to have natural antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and anti-oxidant effects.  Wedding Essentials 2012 89

OST CANADIANS KNOW THEY CAN get much of what they need at their local Canadian Tire store. Christmas lights, ice skates and auto parts, of course. But love? Apparently you can find that too, if you are Samantha Perri and Mike Hranyczny.

At the tender ages of 16, both were working part-time for the Mississauga store. Mike developed a crush on his coworker, and asked a mutual friend to pass on his phone number. When Samantha called to invite him to see a movie, he said yes immediately. According to Mike, “We’ve been together ever since!”

“Most important phone call of my life,” chimes in Samantha with a laugh.

The romance grew and blossomed over the next few years.

Samantha was in a French Lit class in university, listening to the girls around her complaining about how their boyfriends were treating them. Says Samantha, “I thought, thank God I don’t have those problems. Right then I realized I loved Mike, and I knew he’d be the one I’d marry.”

Mike knew this was the woman of his dreams. He found the opportunity to declare his love when Samantha took a trip with some family to Italy. He decided to meet her there partway through her stay. He explains, “After a few days, I suggested we go to Paris for the weekend, since I’d never been. Sam agreed but she had no idea I was preparing to pop the question.”

I thought, thank God I’don’t have those problems. Right then I realized I loved Mike, and I knew he’d be the one I ’d marry.

They had a good time sight-seeing, but then the weather turned and it began to rain. Even so, she gamely agreed to go to the Eiffel Tower with him. They got soaked but soon forgot all about the weather. As they were nestled in a cozy corner of the top level on that cold and rainy afternoon, Mike proposed to his long-time girlfriend. Her response? “I took the ring from his hand, put it on and said, ‘Yes, yes, yes!’”

While Samantha is Italian and Mike is Ukrainian, they are bonded despite a few cultural differences. “Mike is everything I have ever wanted in a man. He is loving, sensitive, intelligent and he makes me feel great about myself. We share the same values and goals. I am honoured to share my life with him.”

And as for Mike, Samantha agreeing to marry him was a moment he’ll always cherish. “Samantha knows me and understands me like no one else. She believes in my dreams and cares about my feelings. She makes me laugh so hard, and has a way of bringing out the very best in me. She’s my very best friend, and my soul mate. I love her with all my heart.”

It took nearly a year and a half to plan their perfect wedding, with lots of parties along the way. Samantha’s family threw her a shower at the same venue as the reception would be. Samantha loved it, saying, “The theme to the whole event was An Afternoon in Paris – guests even dressed in theme colours of black and white, while I wore a crimson cocktail dress.” Instead of the traditional shower games, they continued with the Parisian theme and had a caricaturist, a strolling musician, French food, décor and music.

Mike enjoyed his time with his friends at a stag party, and later, a bachelor party the night before the wedding. “But,” explains Mike, “No one can remember many details from either event!”

The wedding day finally came and was attended by more than 120 invited guests, friends and family. Samantha awoke that morning completely calm and refreshed. She laughs, “In fact, my sister had the jitters and I had to calm her down!”

The formal ceremony, at Saints Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church in Mississauga, included the exchange of vows and of wedding rings. Mike’s ring is custom made; Samantha’s is an interpretation of a Tiffany design she likes, with the band made from an antique setting.

The bride wore a silk and taffeta strapless dress [AmandaLina’s Sposa Boutique] with a cathedral-length veil for the walk down the aisle. Samantha’s bouquet [Carisma Florists] held creamy white roses and ten Calla lilies (one for each year together). She wore purple ostrich feathers in her hair, and the crystal jewellery accessories were a gift from her parents.

The wedding colours were dark purple and white, so the lilies were white with a gorgeous deep purple centre. The bridesmaids carried roses and the men’s boutonnières were backed by a purple ostrich feather to match Samantha’s.

With the wedding ceremony complete, happy guests headed over to the reception at the Mississauga Convention Centre, with the bride and groom travelling in a cream stretch Navigator [Prism Limo].

The couple had reserved a salon in the hall with a walkout patio and garden. During the antipasto/cocktail portion of the evening, guests were able to take advantage of an indoor or outdoor setting.

Sam describes how they blended both cultures easily. “In order to celebrate Mike’s Ukrainian heritage, we had traditional Kozak dancers perform, and had our parents involved in a traditional Ukrainian bread ceremony – where our parents present the bride and groom with salt, vodka and bread.

Legend has it that whoever breaks the biggest piece of bread will rule the house! Mike’s piece was bigger!” And to celebrate Samantha’s Italian heritage, they enjoyed a six-course Italian meal while a family friend played traditional Italian folk songs on the accordion, accompanied by a violinist.

Inside the hall, the tables were dressed in eggplant satins and purple organza, with white Dendrobium orchids and willows standing tall in 16” Eiffel Tower vases. White rose petals and tea lights made the head and cake tables shine.

Mike and Samantha mixed up the reception with live music and a DJ [S4 Sound Sensation] “People tossed rose petals in the air as celebration, and my grandmother even knocked us out of the centre of the circle to show us her moves!” laughs Samantha. The live band was a family affair with the bride’s dad on drums and her Godfather played saxophone and sang.

During speeches, the groom got emotional, surprising his bride. “During his speech he began to talk about me and started crying. I was shocked. I asked him, “Are you crying?”

He said, “Yeah, I can’t stop, I don’t know why!”

Rounding out the evening was the sweets table, complete with a chocolate fountain and featuring the wedding cake [Just Temptations]. It was three round tiers decorated in white fondant with a dot pattern and cascading fresh purple and white orchids, topped with the couple’s initials.

People tossed rose petals in the air as celebration, and my grandmother even knocked us out of the centre of the circle to show us her moves!

After their lovely wedding and a honeymoon in Aruba, the young couple look back on their day with happy memories. Asked if she received any good advice, Samantha told us, “In my parents’ speech they said we must always make each other happy, and to never forget how much we love each other.”

The first step in figuring out where to start when buying a property is to know what you can spend! Visit your bank or speak to a mortgage broker to get a preapproval, or at the very least a ballpark idea of what you can afford. Having the finances in order before making an offer is a great way to remain competitive if you are faced with a multiple offer situation. Since you will be buying together, presumably for the first time, it is a good idea to have an honest chat about your individual financial situations. DON’T EXPECT TO AGREE ON EVERY PROPERTY. When you start looking at homes or condos, it will be such an exciting time, but the perfect house is not going to magically appear. Although your goal is to find a house or condo for you both to live in happily ever after (or for the next few years at least), you both probably have different ideas about what you want. You may want a great yard for planting a garden and a great sitting room to curl up with a good book whereas he just wants a “man-cave” in the basement where he can have his own space to hang with his guys. You will both probably notice and like or dislike different aspects of the same house but in the end, the house that is the best fit is the one that has the greatest combination of those things that you both want. And don’t forget to see the potential!

WIDEN YOUR NET. If you are not finding what you want in the neighbourhood of your dreams, don’t be afraid to look outside those boundaries and keep an open mind. A good realtor can always show you options that you may never have thought about or known about but which may be perfect for you!

There are so many great neighbourhoods but at the moment there is a shortage of inventory in most of those hot ‘hoods! Be prepared to spend time looking at places, getting to know areas and making offers. BE FLEXIBLE. Everybody wants a perfect home but, unless you have an infinite budget, chances are you won’t get everything you want in your first home. AVOID LOOKING TOO LONG. The house-hunting game can be lots of fun, but it’s easy to get caught up. Try to avoid getting stuck looking at homes for months on end as it can just lead to frustration. DON’T GET IN OVER YOUR HEAD. Buying a new home and fixing it up to your standards can be tons of fun. If this is something that interests you, don’t start off with a giant project. Look for homes that need cosmetic upgrades, such as a new kitchen or hardwood floors. Many older homes can have serious problems and before you know it you’re fixing the foundation or upgrading the wiring. You’ve just gotten married, which was probably stressful enough, so why add to it with major home renovations?

Now is your time to relax.

GET A HOME INSPECTION! Home inspections typically cost a few hundred dollars, but can help save you potentially thousands. A good home inspector will walk you through your home and point out any red flags that could end up costing big money in the long run. If you’re not sure where to look for an inspector, ask your realtor for some recommendations; chances are they’ll have a great home inspector up their sleeve!

ASK QUESTIONS! A good realtor should have the answers you need. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice.

“What is your opinion of this area?” “What programmes are available to me as a first time-home buyer and how can I take advantage of them?” Satisfy yourself that your realtor understands your needs and is prepared to spend quality time with you to view homes within your price bracket.

Be sure that your realtor has qualified mortgage consultants to assist you in your pre-approval and have a commitment from the bank prior to viewing homes.

TAKE NOTES AND PHOTOS. While viewing homes, take notes — and be specific! It’s easy to forget which home had the features you liked. Which one had the real fireplace? Do you remember? Write down the points that you are looking for and are important to you. Take your time, don’t rush! This is one of the most important decisions you will make as a couple in your lifetime.

BE A TOURIST. When you find “the perfect one” and are prepared to make an offer, be sure to be an informed buyer! Ask your agent to prepare a list of recent sales so you can compare features of each property. Find information on the neighbourhood and surrounding area, such as location of public transit, parks.

A

ccording to Brian, Jordan walked into his heart the day she walked into the coffee shop where he worked.

After becoming friends, he convinced her to ride with him on his motorcycle, and they soon were inseparable.

The couple’s wedding planning was pretty unusual. Once engaged, they started a blog, calling it a social media experiment in kindness. Explains Jordan, “We simply asked friends and family to help us put together our wedding free of charge, by lending, trading or donating items.” It caught on.

Before they knew it, news spread and products and services were being crafted, donated or traded by friends, strangers, businesses and artisans. “We gave all helpers a shout-out on our blog, so many of the indie businesses who donated were excited to have the promotion!

The sense of community was strongly felt. “The room was full of so much love. It was wonderful to feel surrounded by friends — old and new! — who were there in person or in spirit, through their contributions to our day,” Jordan says.

I love her because of her unwillingness to give up, her ability to succeed at everything she tries, and her love that she shares with everyone.

I love him because Brian is so fun, adventurous and funny. He has the most beautiful face, and such a tender heart. I love his willingness to embark on any adventure.

We laughed when I put Brian’s ring on the wrong hand during the ceremony. He whispered to tell me the mistake, but the ring was stuck. We both kept giggling about it, until we kissed and ran down the aisle.

We cried the whole day! Brian cried the worst during my speech. I surprised him with a slide show of friends, blog fans, and strangers on the street, each holding up big signs saying why I love Brian.

hen engaged couple Juliana Park and Ben Lee told their photographer that they had a quirky idea for a photo session, they weren’t kidding.

Up-and-coming Los Angeles photographer Amanda Rynda jumped at the chance to do something different. “Quirky is right up my alley so I knew we’d have a great time pulling this idea together,” says Rynda about the project. So when the couple said they wanted a zombie to crash their romantic picnic, Rynda was on it like a zombie on brains, so to speak.

The couple convinced their friend Jason Boesch to play the decomposing villain, and the stage was set. The idyllic location and lighting gives a nostalgic feeling to the scene, and the tranquil couple seem to only have eyes for each other. Notice how the lighting changes as the photo story develops; when the zombie charges, the photos are infused with red tones like a horror movie. The photos could almost be individual frames of a film sequence and Rynda has done a clever job telling her unusual love story.

The photos have gone viral, surprising Rynda. “I was overwhelmed — in a good way — with the public’s reaction. I’ve even started to see other photographers shooting zombie sessions and crediting me as the source of their inspiration!”

Looking for something different for your own engagement photos? Use your imagination and think about what might reflect your personalities. Is there a location you love, like an abandoned house or an amusement park?

Shoot your photos there. Do you love sports or video games or even knitting? Find some new ways to incorporate your interests through props or themes. You don’t have to be a model, you just have to have fun and show off your goofy, romantic side. 

A spinning class will burn tons of calories in a short period of time! A 45-minute class can burn up to 358 calories (based on a 150pound female). This is a great muscle-toning class also, working almost all the muscles of the body including hamstrings, gluteal muscles and calves in your lower body, and your abdominals which hold you upright so the rest of your body can function.

When you ride “off saddle” you also activate your upper body (biceps, triceps and shoulder and back muscles) to help keep you pedalling.

Your dog needs exercise, too. Let your buddy help you out in your quest to lose the extra pounds. Research shows that not only humans but also pets (specifically dogs and cats) are becoming obese. Taking your dog or cat for a brisk walk will burn calories for both of you! It is also a bonding experience.

You can look for outdoor boot camps for you and your dog at your closest recreation centre; where you participate in activities like running drills, squats, sit-ups and other core stability, strength training and cardiovascular exercises with other owners and pets.

TAKE A DIP Swimming is one of the best ways to burn calories, firm muscles and do it all without any stress on your joints. Water provides hydrostatic pressure, which means it compresses capillaries and assists venous flow return throughout the body. This will help decrease swelling and water retention and promote blood circulation throughout the body.

Water will also provide three-dimensional resistance. The harder you push and pull in the water, the greater the workout in the least amount of time.

A Zumba class, for example, can burn anywhere from 500-1000 calories per hour.

Using an interval training format with easy dance steps, and no need for a partner, you’ll think you’re at a party and won’t feel like you’re exercising.

BOX IT OUT Whether it’s called kick boxing, cardio boxing or Muay Thai boxing, boxing is an incredible form of exercise! Boxing will tone and condition your body through a great aerobic and anaerobic workout. It will help relieve stress and tension

Soft drinks are full of empty calories and other bad things. If you are a daily soda junkie, by cutting it out for a few months, you may see a dramatic reduction in your waist and dress size.

WHAT TO EXPECT The El Dorado Maroma and the El Dorado Royale are two locations that are geared for adults only (age 16+), and while the former is decidedly smaller and the latter much larger, they both cater to quiet and intimacy. The Azul branch of resorts is geared more to families and is a beautiful choice if you have younger family members in your party, with a relaxed yet upscale vibe and amenities for children.

The El Dorado Maroma is expanding again soon with several new luxury seaside suites, opening in early 2012. The El Dorado Royale has a range of suites and features a sister property, the Casitas, that suggests we may need a new definition for the word “luxury.”

All Karisma Hotels share some similar features and facilities; there are swim-up pool bars, large and small; a number of restaurants, both casual and formal; daily and nightly entertainment like yoga and exercise, lively performances, as well as music and dancing for every taste. A make-up artist will also offer trial sessions where you can try out several different looks, see which ones you like, get an idea of how long the make-up lasts, as well as get a feel for your artist. Missing the chance to sample your makeup options before the wedding is taking an unnecessary gamble on a day as important as this.

Next, you want to look at your regular make-up routine. Do you usually keep things natural and low-maintenance, or are you a fan of all-out glamour? You want to be sure to adapt your wedding day make-up to how you usually look. Ideally you will look like a glowing version of yourself, not someone else. If you aren’t used to a bright red lip shade, this may not be the time to test it out.

UPCOMING TRENDS Nude make-up is making a comeback in a big way. This is an ideal look for your wedding as it lets your natural beauty shine through. Soft, creamy shades or beige and camel for eyes, soft pinks and corals for lips, and barely a touch of rosy blush allow you to achieve this look. Just be sure to use formulas with a bit of a sheen or shimmer to prevent you from looking pale and your features from looking flat. Shimmer will give these shades light and draw attention to your face.

Soft smoky eyes are also a big trend for bridal make-up. Using softer shades of pale browns, greys, navy, or even purple gives you the effect of a smoky eye without looking too heavy. Pair these with a softer lip to avoid make-up overload.

Another great trend for the upcoming season is an overall matte skin with a bright, matte lip shade of fuchsia, red, and pink if you are craving some colour. Use a mattifying foundation and pressed powder. Keep lips in check and make your colour last by priming the lips with a concealer, and using a matching lip liner to fill lips in completely before applying colour.

LOOKING HOT You also want to take the season into account.

In warmer climates, you want to beat the humidity and prevent shine by using mattifying products and staying away from anything oilbased, which can slide off and crease.

Eye primer is a must to keep shadow in place, and even though your mascara and liner should be waterproof, you want to make sure yours will last through high humidity just in case.

If your location is truly tropical, you may want to forego powders altogether as they can smear. Try a light tinted moisturizer mixed with a mattifying gel to even skin out, a cream blush, and follow with waterproof eye makeup and a gloss.

Warmer climates are a perfect time to play up a tan with gorgeous shades of gold, bronze

and shimmering corals. If you’re on the paler side, don’t use this as a reason to sit in the sun or a tanning bed; you’ll gain some colour, but your skin will show damage on your wedding day. Self-tanner is always the way to go. If you are worried about self-tanning disasters, go to a professional for a worry-free spray tan.

FEELING COOL If your wedding is taking place in colder climates, you want to take inventory of your skincare routine. If your skin is dry or flaky, your make-up will grab onto these areas and appear splotchy. If you have these problems, consider consulting with a dermatologist for products to keep your skin soft and glowing.

An at-home remedy is to exfoliate regularly and use a rich cream to keep skin supple.

Your make-up will glide on smoothly and allow powder to sit seamlessly on the skin.

Don’t forget your lips: winter winds can cause chapping that will show through your lipstick. Exfoliate using a washcloth or a clean toothbrush.

In winter, embrace cooler shades of blues, purples and shimmering whites to look like a stunning winter bride.

auren learned something important at Sallie and Max’s wedding: You never want to be the first one of your friends to get married. If you are, just resign yourself to the fact that your wedding will be a shit show.

Most people are still single, open bars are a novelty, and no matter how elegant the wedding was planned to be, it will wind up looking like a scene out of Girls Gone Wild.

They almost didn’t make it to the actual ceremony, because Lauren was throwing up all morning. “Please wait for me, you guys,” she kept saying before she ran back to the bathroom. “I’ll be ready in just a minute.”

They had five friends in town for the wedding, camped out all over the apartment on couches and air mattresses. When their guests had arrived the night before, they’d done their best to be good hostesses and show them a fun night, but had ended up staying out way too late. It was all they could do to shower and put on clean dresses.

“Is this going to be a long mass?” their friend Mary asked. She had gotten ready and then lain down on the couch to take a nap in her dress.

“You’re going to get wrinkled,” Ellen told her.

“I really don’t care,” Mary said. She kept her eyes closed.

Ellen was the only one who seemed to be excited about the wedding. She hadn’t stayed out too late the night before, and she was ready on time, looking fresh and ironed. She sat on the edge of one of the couches with her ankles crossed and watched as the rest of them scrambled to get ready.

The wedding was a mess. Everyone stampeded the bar and ordered tequila shots until the bride’s father demanded that the bartenders stop serving them. Their friend Isabella was one of the bridesmaids, and she informed them that the bride’s mother had been crying all morning. “She kept saying, ‘I can’t believe this is how it’s happening,’ ” Isabella said. “It was awful.”

Their friend Joe threw up on the dance floor and it had to be cleared and cleaned before anyone could continue dancing. One of the bridesmaids was found passed out in the bridal suite and had to be sent home. People made out in corners, girls fell down and ripped their dresses, and finally the band stopped playing and everyone was kicked out and decided to go to Life’s Too Short. Shannon kept slurring, “Their lives are ruined, you know. Their lives are ruined.” 
