WEDDINGS CAN BE WILD, WONDERFUL OR WACKY. HERE ARE JUST A FEW.
WEDDINGS WILL BRAD AND ANGELINA SAY “OUI” AT FRENCH ESTATE? Brad and Angelina like to keep the world guessing. News spread like wildfire when Angie was spotted in April sporting a diamond ring on her left hand that has been estimated at nearly 10 carats. The couple’s engagement was confirmed by Brad’s PR rep and the media has been buzzing about wedding possibilities ever since. With the couple frequently travelling abroad, location choices could be as different as Africa or New Orleans. But it seems there’s been much construction going on at their French residence that could certainly accommodate many guests and a lavish wedding on site. With a small chapel already built, and the availability of a pool, vineyard and over 30 bedrooms, it seems the Jolie-Pitts are getting ready for company. At time of press, the exact details have been top-secret, but one good guess is that Brad and Angelina won’t have to look far to find their flower girls and ring bearers … Pitt says their six children have been bombarding their parents with requests for Mom and Dad to get married.
GROOM ARRESTED When UK couple Julie and John Dalton planned a blowout ‘80s-themed wedding bash that cost most of their life savings, they did not count on the 15 police officers, dog, and helicopter that dropped in. The groom had become unruly over an argument about a song choice with the DJ. Hotel staff called the police, who threatened to use a Taser on him if he didn’t calm down. Subsequently, John was taken away in handcuffs and arrested. The Sun UK reported that the groom arrived back at the hotel the next morning after being released to find all the guests leaving, and called the disaster “heartbreaking.” His wife Julie said, “I will never forget the sight of him being led away in handcuffs like a criminal on our wedding day. It was dreadful.”

WHITE WEDDING It was a first for the North Pole when Norwegian explorer Borge Ousland chose the remote location as the unique site for his wedding to his bride Helge. Also attending were 30 guests and the pastor who arrived first at the Russian Barneo ice base and then took a helicopter to the North Pole. According to Russian press site, RIA Novosti, after the traditional Lutheran ceremony the couple and guests enjoyed champagne and fireworks. They were surprised by a new well-wisher when British explorer Mark Wood was ski-trekking past the group. He reportedly stopped long enough for a glass of champagne with the couple.

ROYAL WEDDING CRASHER Frances and John Canning had the surprise of their lives just moments after taking their wedding vows at the Manchester Town Hall in England. The Queen of England and the Duke of Edinburgh greeted the shocked couple by name, shook hands and chatted for a few moments. The royal couple had been attending a lunch in the same location and had been notified of the wedding earlier, so they took the opportunity to offer congratulations to the newlyweds. While surprised, the bride did appear to manage a graceful curtsey to her Majesty. The Daily Mail reported that the Cannings were aware the Queen might be in the same building that day, but, said Frances, “We never dreamt we would be able to meet her. Photo courtesy of NASA/Bill Ingalls

cottage bonfire fuelled the flames of their first meeting before this couple headed off to separate universities. A long-distance relationship developed to the point where long car trips between Ottawa and Toronto became common every weekend. Recreating elements of their first date, the couple took their small wedding party out for pizza, bowling and midway rides in Niagara Falls before the wedding to get know each other better. Cailey was stunning in her strapless ivory gown with her hair simply swept into a classic up-do. The ceremony and reception was at the Prince of Wales Hotel, where guests cozied up to a traditional, long harvest table decorated with seasonal garlands with accents of plum, ivory and charcoal. After a sumptuous meal of beef tenderloin, the couple surprised guests with a ride in an elegant horse and carriage. Later they returned for an evening of warm drinks, camaraderie and cake. I love her because Cailey is extremely caring and thoughtful in everything she does. She has the perfect sense of humour! Also, she is the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen; I cannot imagine being with anyone else. I love him because Stephen’s always supportive of me, no matter what the situation. He’s funny, sweet, and by far my best friend. We share a lot of common interests like travelling and home renovations, so there’s never a dull moment!

We laughed when we learned that the gazebo where our romantic photos were taken was actually a movie prop from a murder scene in a horror movie filmed in the town years ago! We cried … not that much, actually! Neither of us is the teary type, but it was difficult to keep my composure when walking down the aisle with my dad. Our moms did a lot of crying for us, though! Sage advice from Cailey: “Stay relaxed. If you’re happy and comfortable you won’t even notice if something goes wrong. Our location made everything easy, providing a wedding planner so when we arrived in Niagara all that was left for us to do was to enjoy ourselves.”

WHAT KIND OF BRIDE ARE YOU? Your dress style and personality will influence the look you want to achieve. Are you fun and flirty, classic and sophisticated, innocent and wholesome, or downright sexy and glamourous? Knowing the image you want to project will influence not only your hair but also your entire wedding vibe. Is it an informal daytime reception or a black-tie evening that calls for drama and flair? Your hair should be in keeping with the formality of the event. Will your ceremony be indoors or out? Wind and humidity can affect a bride’s hair, so make sure your stylist is armed to protect your ‘do. Does your wedding have a theme that can be reflected by your hairstyle? Appropriate accessories can be added to incorporate lace for a vintage theme, for example, or a fabric rose for a floral theme, a sparkly snowflake pin for a winter theme, et cetera.

Shear Heaven Salon & Day Spa and a stylist for 28 years, agrees. “Brides want to look like themselves, just slightly more dressed up. In past years, all the brides wanted their hair up, with big, bouffant-like hairstyles. Now it’s much softer. I’m getting lots of requests for ‘beach hair’ – gentle waves that are unstructured and messy.” Depending on the age of the bride, the 20somethings may want a more casual, loose look, while brides in their 30s sometimes request a relaxed version of a classic up-do that conveys a more elegant feeling. “However,” Cutra says, “There are no cookie-cutter brides anymore. Brides used to all have a similar look, but now anything goes.” Caron adds, “In the end, it really just comes down to whatever makes the bride happy.”

hair HAIR ACCESSORIES Veils – Is the veil dead? Not by a long shot, although the lengths and styles may vary wildly. Cutra says she still sees all kinds, from floorlength, lace-trimmed veils worth thousands of dollars to little birdcage fascinators. And Caron claims about half of her brides still wear some version of a veil, “But there are just so many new styles and trends for bridal hair accessories that women have more options to choose from.” A quick and easy way a bride can change up her look is to remove the veil later in the evening and add a small, sparkly accessory in its place.
Photo: Flirt Photography | flirtphotography.ca
Clips – A little “hair bling” like a crystal-covered barrette or comb is a rising trend with both short and long bridal hair. Choose an accent piece that is similar to other items you will be wearing and can play off your earrings or bracelet. A little Swarovski crystal can go a long way, so don’t go overboard with a big necklace, big earrings and a beaded belt too. The long and loose hair trend goes well with a vintage or bohemian style, so the addition of a playful hair clip may be the ideal accessory for those brides.
20 Wedding Essentials 2012
Headbands – An elegant and simple accessory is the modern headband. Usually beaded or dressed up with some detail, a headband can keep a bride’s hair in place and away from her face for photos. It helps the bride feel more comfortable; she doesn’t have to worry about her hairstyle falling apart. Adding something unique to the hair makes it bridal and brings more attention to the bride’s face. Custom fascinators – Brides love to customize. Caron says, “If you have something in your mind, but you can’t find it anywhere, you can go with a local designer and you can really get that unique piece that you’re seeking.” David Dunkley, owner of KC’s Hats, knows all about personalizing design. As a milliner who was trained by the royal hat-makers to the late Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, David brings an original mix of historical tradition and modern flavour to his bespoke hats, headpieces and fascinators. While this trend is not for everyone, it’s growing rapidly, with thanks to a certain Duchess of Cambridge. “Without question, the royal wedding has changed our industry. Before Kate, they [fascinators] were certainly popular, but since the wedding the phenomenon is out of this world.” Using high-end luxury fabrics and materials, David loves to create custom pieces for the confident bride who dreams of an original, dramatic look.

John CHILDHOOD SWEETHEARTS TIE THE KNOT WITH LOVE AND LAUGHTER
T
OGETHER SINCE THEIR TEENS, Samantha Phillips and John DeRosa met in high school. A decade later they are still crazy about each other.
YOUNG LOVE John recalls their first date with affection. “To this day I still remember what she wore; she looked hot!” He took Sam to watch him play hockey, and remembers she was very shy on the ride to the rink. Later she warmed up and snuggled up to him on the way home. “Samantha said she enjoyed watching me play and always tells me how sexy she thinks I am in my hockey equipment, even to this day.” Their love matured through the years. John says, “Since we started dating young we can definitely say that puppy love was immediate. Then it grew to real love and we have grown and experienced the many different stages of what it means to be in love. Like every relationship, it has ups and downs, and I have done everything in my power to keep Sam in my arms.”

THE PROPOSAL In August, 2010 the couple went camping at Algonquin Park, one of their favorite places. A few days in, Sam suggested that they walk the Mizzy Lake Trail, an estimated seven-hour hike. To her surprise John agreed, but later found out that the reason he said yes so easily was so his brother could drive the four hours to Algonquin Park to hide her ring in their tent! “That long hike was the perfect excuse to be away from the campsite long enough for his plan to come together.” Returning later, starving and exhausted, they cooked a quick meal and then went to sit in view of beautiful Coon Lake. As the sun set, John made an excuse to go back to the tent. When he returned, he told Samantha how much she meant to him. “He told me there was no one he would rather have sitting beside him, and that he loved me more than words could ever explain. Just as the sun set perfectly over the lake, he got to one knee and asked if I would marry him! In tears, the only reply I could get out was, ‘Of course I will!’” How did John know that Sam was the one for him? “Easy,” he says. “She knows me like the back of her hand; she has been there through thick and thin. She has a quirky humour that makes me laugh. We have so much in common, from music to sports, but what made me really fall in love are her big blue eyes and her sexy butt!” Being able to laugh together is important to Sam as well. Asked about some of John’s best qualities, she says, “He can make me laugh no matter what situation I find myself in. He is able to find all the right words when I need to hear them most. I love his charm and cockiness and the fact that he has the most addictive smile.”

a real-life wedding FUN AND GAMES The months leading up to the wedding were filled with friends and family. Samantha enjoyed a peacock-themed bridal shower, decorated with lots of feathers and décor in royal blue and emerald green. Nearly 100 ladies attended, and one game they played was making Sam answer questions about her fiancé. Laughs Sam, “For every question I got wrong, a piece of grape gum was shoved into my mouth. Just so you know, grape is my least favourite flavour! Thank God I knew so much about John.” The bachelorette party was a weekend at Blue Mountain in Collingwood. Fifteen girls wasted no time, heading out to dinner and then to dancing at a busy bar. The bride was decked out in standard bachelorette wear (a veil, tiara, etc.) and she was given a scavenger list of very flirty items to acquire. After a late night, the next day was spent relaxing at Le Scandinave Spa. Sam raves, “An amazingly beautiful place that every person should experience! Hot springs, cold pools, a sauna, a steam room … breathtaking!” Not to be left out, John invited his friends for a golf getaway and some casino time in Niagara Falls. The first night out they “somehow” ended up at a club in St Catherines. John recalls, “We had a great night where the boys had fun dancing up a storm and drinking. We tore up that dance floor. We followed that with singing in the streets with a street musician and topped the night off in the casino.” The next day was a round of golf and, later, dinner at an all-meat Brazilian restaurant and a little more gambling.
The best thing, more than anything else, was seeing her smile and the sparkle in Sam’s eye. It moved me and reminded me just how much I really do love her. 24 Wedding Essentials 2012
THE BIG DAY At the gothic-looking Metropolitan United Church, the couple exchanged white gold rings engraved with the wedding date and the word aishiteru (“I love you” in Japanese). The vows included promises to be each other’s “partner in parenthood, ally in conflict, comrade in adventure and accomplice in mischief.” The bride wore an A-line dress with a sweetheart top and a corset closure at the back by Maggie Sottero (Angelina). Simple beaded embellishments at the neckline and down the side enhanced the diamond white dress with a long bustled train. Her bobbed hair was adorned with a custom bird cage veil and fascinator with crystals and feathers. Sam carried a handtied bouquet of mixed flowers and Calla lilies – some black, some white with purple throats. When asked if she carried something traditional, she replied, “I did make sure that I had something blue on me, and that was my belly button ring!” John says that seeing Samantha walk down the aisle “completely shocked me because she looked amazingly beautiful.” He sweetly adds, “The best thing, more than anything else, was seeing the smile and sparkle in Sam’s eye. It moved me and reminded me just how much I really do love her.” Sam admits to getting teary when reading her vows. “I knew that each and every word that I was reading to him had never been truer. They describe exactly who we are perfectly.”
We have so much in common, from music to sports, but what made me really fall in love are her big blue eyes and her sexy butt.

a real-life wedding READY TO ROCK The reception was held at the Eglinton Grand, a converted classic movie theatre. Upon arrival, the guests signed vintage vinyl records, and classic rock music was played for much of the evening. The couple even used their engagement photos as movie posters at the entrance to the theatre. John’s fondest memory of the night was when they were first announced, walking in with “Kickstart My Heart” by Mötley Crüe blasting. “When you walk into a room filled with 200 of your closest friends and family cheering, how can you not feel so loved?” The gourmet dinner included antipasto, vodka-infused fusilli, and entrees of filet mignon, chicken and lamb. While Sam says the food was incredible, she admits that, “the late-night chocolate fountain and dessert table were a major highlight of the night as well!” After the wedding, the two enjoyed an elaborate honeymoon in Costa Rica, experiencing everything from volcanoes to beaches. Says Sam: “We did excursions such as a safari float tour; a hanging bridges hike; a waterfall and volcano hike; a sunrise sailing tour; we visited the Eco Termales (hot springs); and we took a tour of Manuel Antonio National Park and saw wildlife and exotic animals. We even got to watch the sea turtles come onto the beach to lay eggs. Jaclyn Bryan MIXING FAITHS AND FAMILY CULTURES MADE THIS DISTINCTIVE WEDDING FUN FOR ALL
I
N A BATTLE BETWEEN YOUR HEART and your head, it seems that love wins out every time. Or so it was with Jaclyn Chin and Bryan Waxman, both students starting their first year at the University of Toronto’s dental school. The two were in the same class together and Jaclyn admits there was chemistry the first day they met. “Even though we both swore we wouldn’t date someone in our class ... well, we both failed!” Their first date was at a nearby Swiss Chalet, however, Jaclyn points out that she wasn’t too sure if it was actually a first date! “We tried really hard not to date in the beginning. We thought it would be a bad idea to start seeing someone in class; if things went wrong, we would be stuck with each other for four more years!” Bryan recalls they had dinner and hung out. “I think we just felt a deep connection with each other because we would talk every night and that developed naturally into a relationship. We both have the same goals and values in life.” The couple agrees they knew they had something special early on, and they share interests in musicals, concerts, travel and spending time with friends and family.

At the end of the question trail was a bouquet of flowers, and Bryan on one knee, holding a ring! THE PROPOSAL A few short years later, Jaclyn and Bryan had fallen very much in love and began sharing an apartment. During their last year of school, Jaclyn came home to a surprise. “I had been out for dinner with my instructors and classmates. When I arrived home, there was a note on our door. It said there would be a quiz and, if I answered correctly, there would be a prize at the end.” She walked in to find Calla lilies and champagne in a darkened, candle-lit apartment. Jaclyn then saw a quiz card, and had to answer questions about their dating history before proceeding to the next. She recalls, “Bryan was hiding in the bedroom and he’d tell me if I answered correctly. At the end of the question trail was a bouquet of flowers and Bryan, on one knee, holding a ring!” Bryan knew Jaclyn was the one for him, he says, because, “She is funny, beautiful and smart. Most of all, she can put up with me for prolonged periods of time, which is no easy chore.” Jaclyn is quick to answer why she said yes to Bryan’s proposal. “He is smart, kind, outgoing, hilarious, handsome, and always focuses on the positive aspects of life.”
THE ENGAGEMENT Soon after their engagement, Bryan had to leave for work in New York and was there for nearly two years while Jaclyn made wedding plans. That was a big change – from being in school together every day to being apart most of the time. Bryan participated in decisions and meetings via Skype and e-mail. When he could come home they visited the venue and met with the band. Jaclyn says she couldn’t have done it without support. “My mom was a huge help, and was with me during the whole process. We also had a great event team from Treasured Moments Event Planning, which made everything go more smoothly.” Jaclyn’s bachelorette party was hosted by some of her family and friends. She didn’t know what to expect. “I was picked up at home on a Saturday afternoon and blindfolded.” The first stop was at Flirty Girl Fitness, a pole-dancing studio for some lessons and laughs. “I was decked out in feather boas and a veil tiara and we learned some sassy moves and spins.” The next stop took them to her cousin’s condo where a feast had been set up in the party room. After dinner, a limo picked the group up and took them to a club in downtown Toronto. Later still, they grabbed some food at a latenight diner. “We had a great time!” she recalls. When asked about his bachelor party, however, Bryan was a little more concise. “My bachelor party was in Montreal with my closest friends … enough said.” Leaves a lot to the imagination, doesn’t it? THE WEDDING Finally the wedding day arrived, and Bryan and Jaclyn wanted to bring their Jewish, Trinidadian and Chinese cultures together in a way that would be inclusive to their 325 guests. “We focused on making it a really fun and stress-free night for everyone,” explains Bryan. Guests arrived at the Markham Event Centre to enjoy cocktails, Carib beer and Trinidadian music. The couple decided they wanted to have everyone seated at their tables, with cocktails and food, for the actual ceremony. Jaclyn says, “That way they didn’t have to wait in-between the ceremony and reception, and they were able to settle in and relax.” So guests were seated at their dinner tables, except for immediate family who were seated along the aisle, for the ceremony. The bride walked in to the song “Wonderful Tonight” played on the steel pan. The ceremony was conducted under a chuppah and included a lovely candle-lighting ceremony passed down through generations. The grandparents lit candles for the couple’s parents, the parents lit candles for the bride and groom, and then the bride and groom lit a unity candle together. Jaclyn’s first dress was a strapless, mermaid-style Amsale gown made of white royal duchess satin, with a sweetheart neckline and a ruched, asymmetrical bodice. Following the ceremony, the celebration kicked off with a hora (traditional Jewish dance) and dinner was an eightcourse, Chinese banquet-style meal that consisted of seafood, beef and chicken. Funny and moving speeches were made by all parents and the wedding couple. Jaclyn’s father made a speech that, she says, may be “the funniest speech in wedding history! He included jabs at the groom, and integrated our three cultures (Jewish, Chinese, Trinidadian). We should post it on YouTube!”

I was decked out in feather boas and a veil tiara and we learned some sassy moves and spins. The bride and groom’s first dance was to the quirky Adam Sandler song, “Grow Old with You.” Jaclyn and her father danced to “Isn’t She Lovely?” by Stevie Wonder, and Bryan and his mother’s dance was “Sunrise, Sunset” from Fiddler on the Roof. Live music from the Rhythm Revival Band kept the guests dancing all night. Halfway through the night, the bride changed into a traditional Chinese dress called a cheongsam. It was a halterstyle gown of embroidered red silk with a Mandarin collar. Jaclyn looked fabulous in the slim-fitting dress with thighhigh slits up both legs. A Chinese tea ceremony was held on the dance floor. (In a tea ceremony, the couple kneels in front of their elders and offers tea as a sign of respect and gratitude. In return, the elders give money or gold jewellery as gifts.) All grandparents and parents participated. A donation was made to a dental charity in lieu of wedding favours.

THE NEXT STEP After a spectacular honeymoon in Kauai and Maui, Hawaii, (“Paradise,” says Jaclyn. “We couldn’t imagine going anywhere else!”) the couple are now settling into domestic life in Toronto. “We’re trying to stay young before kids and enjoy the city life. We are renting a condo for now but are excited to find a house and start a family in the near future.” Looking back at their wedding they agree they are lucky to have such close family. “We are both blessed to have families who encouraged us from Day One to be ourselves, and to love and respect others always.”

All Aboard! CELEBRATING YOUR FIRST ANNIVERSARY
B
rides invest time searching for the perfect wedding dress, and then fall in love with the one they wish they could wear all the time. Once the big day is done and the dress is cleaned and packed away, most women don’t think about putting it on again. But why not? For bride Tina Romaneh it happened unexpectedly, the morning after her wedding to husband Andrew. She explains, “We awoke in our Toronto hotel room and realized we had failed to pack an overnight bag. All we had with us were the wedding clothes we arrived in and a debit card!” Hungry, they ventured out for breakfast at a popular breakfast hub, where strangers congratulated them and sent coffee to their table. “We had such fun being out in our wedding clothes that we decided to make it an anniversary tradition to go to dinner dressed in them every year!”
50 Wedding Essentials 2012
For their first anniversary, they wanted something special. Tina admits that she was “super excited” to wear her couture Enzoani gown again, and her husband donned his Diesel jacket and Hugo Boss pants. Their photographer discovered the perfect venue at the Orangeville train station, home of The Credit Valley Explorer scenic train line. Styled on location by The Wedding Decorators.ca, they created a rustic, vintage look that evoked a sense of old-world charm. They finished the shoot at a nearby location on the docks of Island Lake. Tina was very happy with the outcome and especially proud of the more impatient model, her dog Prince. “He came out looking like a gentleman in his tuxedo!” While the temperature was quite cold during the shoot, the couple was warmed by the experience and by the memories it brought back to them of their wedding day. Why not break out your own gown for an anniversary celebration of your own? Mark the success of your first year with a photo session at a special location … the place you first met, or the location of your first date, or any place fun and romantic that reminds you why you fell in love in the first place!

WHAT’S YOUR STYLE? Consider the style of photography that most appeals to you and your fiancé, and then take the time to search for the right photographer who will not only be able to provide that style, but is also someone with whom you can get along! It can be a long trip if you have a conflict of personalities. If you are a type-A, highly organized person, you’ll want a photographer who likes to plan and can work with your detailed agenda. If you are relaxed and spontaneous, your photographer should be up for anything whenever you are. Common wedding photography styles are photojournalism, candid and traditional. Each one of these styles offers the couple a completely different perspective of their day. Once you’ve reviewed several photographers’ portfolios, you’ll have a good idea of the kind of camerawork you like best.
WHAT’S YOUR PLAN B? Planning a destination wedding is different from a local wedding; there are certain things that will be beyond your control. The local weather is not always as predictable as you would like it to be. Planning ahead of time includes researching the average temperatures and weather patterns for your location during your time of travel. Planning will help you avoid monsoon season and allow your resort coordinator to make alternate choices for bad weather in advance, like choosing secondary locations for the ceremony, pictures and reception. Another common challenge is lost luggage. An easy way to make this less painful is to spread your belongings across two or more pieces of luggage; this way if you lose one bag you still have some belongings in the other. Brides and bridesmaids should bring their dresses as carry-on pieces. What are the types of flowers in bloom at the time of your wedding in that country? You can be disappointed when you’re counting on tropical flowers but the only blooms available are roses or Calla lilies; both flowers are beautiful but may not be what you have in mind. A little homework goes a long way.
DESTINATION WEDDINGS CAN BE A LOT OF FUN, AND EXTREMELY EASY TO PLAN IF YOU THINK THINGS THROUGH CAREFULLY AND RESEARCH THE LOCATION AND VENUE WELL. Wedding Essentials 2012 63
photography WHEN SCHEDULING YOUR DAY, KEEP IN MIND YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER WILL NEED ADEQUATE TIME WITH YOU AFTER THE CEREMONY, AND WILL REQUIRE ENOUGH LIGHT TO PROVIDE YOU WITH THE BEAUTIFUL WORK YOU EXPECT.
KNOW THE DETAILS Consider visiting the resort a year early, if time permits. You can preview the venues, meet the wedding planner, and review the wedding package options and services available. This is not always possible, of course, so ensuring you develop a relationship with your resort planner is key. Email is the best way to communicate, while it also ensures you have a record of what was said and agreed by the resort planner. Stay informed and connected to avoid surprises or disappointment. Destination weddings are popular in the winter months, when the sun sets earlier in the evening. When scheduling your day, keep in mind your photographer will need adequate time with you after the ceremony, and will require enough light to provide you with the beautiful work you expect. Colours and themes should reflect your personalities and the destination. For vivid photos, consider colours that complement the resort grounds. Caribbean destinations are lush and green, and who can forget that turquoise water? Think about oranges, purples, pinks and reds – these pop in tropical backgrounds and make for some awesome photos. Discuss with your photographer the amount of coverage you’d like. Take into account the wedding day, rehearsal dinner, a trash-the-dress session, and any sport or adventure coverage: all of this should be agreed in advance to eliminate any confusion and stress.
64 Wedding Essentials 2012
Wedding day coverage should be all day. Unlike local weddings, destination weddings are unique in this sense, and since you are so far from home you should definitely have all the coverage you deserve.
PLAN YOUR SHOTS When you think of your wedding, do particular images come to mind? Jumping in the ocean, walking hand-in-hand down the beach, or the breeze playfully tugging at your veil and dress? If you can provide your photographer with a list of shots you’d like to try, you can better translate your overall vision and get the vibe you want. Of course, a seasoned professional should also have a list of “do not miss” shots in his arsenal. You’ll want to take advantage of the natural scenery as much as you can. Ask for suggestions from your onsite consultant who may know the hidden places that photograph really well. Don’t forget the traditional shots that go with every wedding. Getting dressed, a moment with your parents, wiping away a happy tear, signing the register, tossing the bouquet … the classic images are just as important to telling your wedding story as the beach shots. >>pg.68

BONUS PHOTOGRAPHY SESSIONS Rehearsal Dinner This is a great time for your photographer to break the ice with everyone, as it’s often the first time he or she gets to meet your guests. Dinner can be an emotional event since it’s when the most toasts are given, and everyone is more relaxed then during the wedding. Having your photographer shooting now will make everyone less camera-shy on the big day.
Trash-the-Dress Sessions Contrary to popular opinion, these sessions usually do not damage your dress. It is another opportunity to wear your dress again, and have some exciting photos taken that you might not be able to do on the wedding day. Because trash-the-dress photos are done after the wedding, the nervousness is gone and photos turn out quite playful and natural.
Honeymoon/ Vacation-Style Photos Plan to laze on the beach in your teeny bikini sipping umbrella drinks all day after the wedding? Get your photographer to take some unobtrusive shots of you and your honey taking it easy and getting cozy in a hammock or beach lounger.
Water or Day Adventures If you and your husband are into water sports, this is a great opportunity to get professional images of you enjoying your favorite adventure, whether it’s snorkelling, scuba-diving, parasailing, or other activity. Tell your photographer well in advance so they can arrange to bring the necessary equipment (for example, waterproof camera covers), which will allow them to capture all of the fun.
68 Wedding Essentials 2012
WHO PAYS FOR WHAT? Standard practice is for the wedding couple to provide the airfare and accommodation for the travelling photographer(s), just like your other guests. Many travel agencies offer one free ticket for every twenty you book. Once you have your guest list confirmed, you will know if you are getting a free ticket, and so it’s an affordable way to arrange your photographer’s flight. If your resort is all-inclusive, you don’t have to worry about food or beverages. Your additional costs should only be the service package(s) you have selected from your photographer. Professionals have insurance for their gear so you should not have to worry about that. It is best to address all these points with your photographer before signing the contract, as not all photographers have the same way of dealing with destinations.
HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE Hiring a photographer for your destination wedding has its benefits. You will have had a chance to meet and review their work, and will be aware of what you can expect to see when you pick up your images and albums back home. The fact that they are local is an added bonus, as you will be able to meet again and review additional services you may require. Hiring a photographer on location means you’ll have little time to review their work, and you may have no idea what their style is or what to expect. Once you get back home, the process of selecting your images by email only may cause some frustration. Do check with your resort, not all allow you to bring in your own photographer. Destination weddings can be a lot of fun, and extremely easy to plan if you think things through carefully and research the location and venue well. Choosing a photographer is a huge job, but once your day is over you will be thankful you took the time to choose the right photographer for you. Cris De Sousa is one-half of the wedding photography team of BPhotographed and loves to combine work and travel wherever possible.

choing that Motown classic tune, “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” the word is out that winery weddings hit the right note. There’s no denying the seduction of vineyards. The ambience of earthiness, abundance and simple elegance makes a winery wedding unique. Bridal couples love the vast selection of locales, food, beverage and experiences that will leave lasting memories for everyone lucky enough to attend.
WINE GIFT IDEAS A winery wedding invitation is sure to set guests thinking about purchasing a wedding gift for you with a vineyard theme. Some suggestions for a gift registry: Wine Gift Registry. SOPHISTICATED SETTINGS A vineyard wedding can gracefully span the spectrum from rustic or casual to elegant and refined. The vineyard atmosphere changes dramatically from season to season, providing brides with options for spectacular spring, summer, fall or even winter weddings. Ontario wine country is proving a central point for weddings where guests are scattered around the globe. The added attractions of the Niagara Falls region and the urban delights of Toronto ensure that many guests become tourists for a few days after the ceremonies. Couples appreciate the tranquility of a vineyard, a quiet oasis away from city hustle and bustle that encourages everyone to relax and enjoy a memorable day. Add to that world-renowned local wines and brilliant menu choices showcasing local ingredients and you can create a wedding experience nonpareil. Vineyard weddings speak to romance and hope for the future. “There is a sense of growth and romance about vineyards and wine. Like wine that gets better with age, there is a sense of something starting here and going forward that matures with even more beauty,” notes Helen Young, owner of Inn on the Twenty, associated with Cave Spring Cellars in Jordan. Rhonda Robinson, wedding consultant at Willow Springs Winery near Stouffville, has observed that more couples are looking for out-of-the-box wedding experiences and many are opting for more casual celebrations. At Legends Estates Winery in Beamsville,
events coordinator Katie Jones believes that couples choosing vineyard weddings are passionate about food and wine, and wineries can deliver the best of both with their worldclass wines and dishes prepared with fresh, local ingredients.
ARRIVING IN STYLE Because of the acreage involved at most wineries, you have lots of options from helicopter to horse and carriage to make a grand entrance or exit. London cabs, double-decker buses or vintage Rolls-Royce Silver Clouds can provide transportation with flair. At Willow Springs Winery, one groom paddled his canoe across the pond to meet his bride at the gazebo near the large willow tree, against a backdrop of the impressive Oak Ridges Moraine.
A VARIETY OF WINES AND WEDDINGS What surprises couples is the diverse range of vineyard wedding experiences. Is a carriage house wedding your dream? Vineland Estates Winery occupies a 1840s Mennonite homestead, complete with landmark tower and charming stone carriage house. Did you fall in love with the old movie classic, Doctor Zhivago? Does your wedding fantasy include a romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride over white fields, with your wedding outfit accented by fur muff and wrap? After the outdoor winter wedding, visit an indoor ice bar. Shelley Traver, sales & events manager at Rockway Glen Golf Course & Estate Winery in St. Catharines helped make that dream come true for a lucky couple.

Thinking rustic? At Ravine Vineyard Winery, St. Davids, canvas draping and wooden harvest tables can set the stage for a countrychic affair that includes wood-oven roasted suckling pig. Add sparks with a bonfire later on and treat guests with a s’mores station. Is a French Château your style? Consider Château des Charmes near Niagara-on-theLake. The château is one-of-a-kind in Canada and with six generations of winemaking experience in Algeria, France and now NOTL, the Bosc family knows a thing or two about wine. A marquee tent covers the Vineyard Courtyard, surrounded by exquisite rose gardens and vineyards. The Grange of Prince Edward Vineyards and Estate Winery near Hillier has a decidedly
old-world feel, a Loyalist version of a French wine estate. A stone patio with the backdrop of a barn and vineyard landscape provides an ideal setting for intimate al fresco wedding dinners that feature food from local producers. Want the flavour of Under the Tuscan Sun? Casa-Dea Estates Winery, Wellington, specializes in cucina Italiana. Waterfalls that emerge from oak wine barrels fall into ponds dotted with water lilies and a giant chess set offer great photo ops.
THINGS TO CONSIDER • Weather. Chances are your wedding day will be sunny, but what if the weather doesn’t co-operate? Check out indoor or protected options.
Chateau Des Charmes Winery
72 Wedding Essentials 2012
• Temperature. It can be hot in the sun. Consider providing cold, bottled water and fans to guests. • Comfort. No matter how elegant the occasion, nature is bound to call. Ask the winery about the washroom facilities. Perhaps luxury trailer washrooms are on site. Think porcelain fixtures, stainless steel sinks, hot and cold running water and mirrors. • Terrain. Legends Estates Winery supplies brides with postcards to send their guests giving suggestions on attending a vineyard wedding, including wearing flat shoes for the outdoor ceremony and changing to heels for the reception. • Beverages. Naturally at a vineyard wedding, wine is the beverage of choice but check if you are also permitted to offer other alcoholic beverages to your guests. • Accommodation. While some wineries have an inn on site, many have arrangements with nearby hotels for guest accommodation. As of this year, Willow Springs Winery is providing another option, a fivebedroom villa in the vineyard, which is ideal for key wedding participants. • Transportation. There is the possibility that a few guests may enjoy their wine sampling a little too much. Ensure you have designated drivers or safe shuttle transport so your guests don’t have to drive back to their hotels.
FAVOUR YOUR GUESTS Surprise your guests with special favours that relate to a winery theme. • Ice wine truffles, boxed. Can you imagine anything more decadent? • Wine jellies. These jellies accent cheeses or pâtés and crackers. Packaged in your wedding colours in organza drawstring bags with decorations of tiny grapes or grapevine, the favours could do doubleduty incorporated into table centerpieces. Wine drizzles or glazes or vinegar jellies are other gourmet delights. • Oils and Vinegars. The vineyards of Niagara produce world-class vinegars and grapeseed oils for the discerning palate. Flavour-infused wine vinegars like Vidal maple or cucumber Sauvignon Blanc paired with an elegant bottle of grapeseed oil make special treats. • Wine. Many wineries will private label your wine for you, complete with photograph, names and wedding date. • Accessories. Corkscrews, carafes or other wine paraphernalia, including wine charms that echo your wedding theme and colours.
GO GRAPE! There are hosts of opportunities to get creative with a vineyard wedding. Grapevine arches are popular for this setting. Scatter flower petals and tiny grape leaves for an outdoor aisle runner. Use grapevine cuttings to trail along the head table or for accents in floral arrangements. Instead of numbering reception tables, what about naming them each for a variety of grape? Think Riesling, Cabernet, Gamay, Merlot, Zinfandel. You could also go with famous wine regions of the world, like Champagne, Niagara, Prince Edward County, Napa, Paarl, Burgundy, Chianti, Mosel. Corks are a quintessential wine symbol. Use them for place card holders or trivets that double as centerpiece bases holding clear vases filled with corks and flowers or fruit. What about using corks to make a moneybox? Or, glue corks in a crosshatch pattern to a large frame for the table-seating chart or photo of the bride and groom. Echo vineyard shades of greens and purples and rusts in linens and décor. In Ontario, you don’t have to go far to unearth a world of choices for your ideal wedding location. Discover for yourself what unique experiences local wineries can offer. Wedding Essentials 2012 73

DREADING to WEDDING LOSING YOUR MIND OVER ALL THE WEDDING DETAILS? HERE ARE SOME WAYS TO KEEP ON TOP OF THE PLANNING CHAOS
KEEP YOUR COOL Lean on a best friend (or a planner). Appoint someone else to execute your plans on the day so you can relax. Keep it in perspective. Stay focused on why you’re getting married. Nothing else really matters. Planners say that brides are usually only nervous until the moment they head down the aisle — after that they relax and enjoy their day. Visualize. What will you look like? Envision yourself, the flowers, the decorated venues — imagine the scene around you. That’s your wedding vision and when you stay focused on it, you can concentrate on what is important to you. Trust your vendors. Brides worry, but in the end it all comes together. If you’ve done your research, hired experienced profession-
74 Wedding Essentials 2012
als, and covered all the bases, you can usually trust the vendors’ expertise. Breathe. Once the big day comes, the work is all done, so sit back and enjoy it. Some brides miss the sweet moments of their day by stressing over the details that are already in place. Pick a photographer whose work you really love, so that you’ll still enjoy your wedding photos ten years down the road. Fib a little! If you are getting married on the fifteenth of the month, tell the bridal salon the date is the first. That way, if something goes wrong, needs alteration, or gets delayed, you’ve bought yourself some time.
BE ORGANIZED Plan early. Make a checklist, grab one from a magazine (such as our own Bride’s Survival Guide) or online site and get started. Often a
list will give you new ideas for planning you had not considered. Keep a bridal binder. Store ideas for flowers, dresses, photos, contracts, receipts — everything! Every wedding planner will tell you to make notes, track your thoughts and manage the information collected from vendors, magazines and bridal shows. Get the seating plan done! Send your invitations out early so you can get them back early. Find out exactly how many people are attending your wedding. When you know the real number, you will know how much of everything else you need, and your budget and planning can all fall into place. Stay on top of your paperwork. File contracts right away. Update your budget list as soon as you buy something so you know how much you have left to spend. Don’t procrasti-
nate or you’ll be swamped and confused. Have a back-up plan! Plan ahead to find back-ups if you need them. Have a list of “second choices” ready in case of sudden problems with your car service, florist, photographer, and band or deejay. Ask your top picks in advance what happens if somebody gets sick or can’t make your wedding. Double check. One month before the wedding, get together with your planner or point person. Go through every single detail and compare it with each service or item you have purchased. Many brides change their minds so often they can’t remember it all. By going over the contracts and minutiae, a clear picture will emerge and you won’t have any surprises or misunderstandings.
STAY ON BUDGET Stick to the plan. Be diligent. Get quotes so you have some idea of real costs before setting the final budget. If your dress budget is $2,000 and you end up spending $4,000 you are not sticking to the plan. Pick a favourite. Choose which aspect of your wedding is most important to you. Decide that you don’t care for a limo with all the bells and whistles because you’d rather put your money into a fantastic cake. Or perhaps you’ll have lots of flowers but will cut out the wedding favours. You do not have to invite everybody you know. Scale down your guest list. It’s your largest expense. Prioritize. For example, you need flowers. Divide it up. You must have a bridal bouquet and the groom must have a boutonniere. The bridesmaids and centrepieces come next. Then when you’ve reached your budget, you already have the flower essentials. You may not be able to afford corsages for all the aunts but you’ve wisely spent your money on your priorities. Don’t assume that money will come in from other sources – parents, gifts, etc. Stick to your budget. A couple should know in advance what they have and what they can pay for. If mom and dad are going to contribute, that’s a bonus, not a budget. Be creative. Luckily, personal style can help you save money. When it comes to decorating, for example, candles are less expensive than flowers. Try using antique candelabras from local thrift stores and find ways to create a different look for each table at a small cost. Use feathers, shells, sand, branches, leaves or fruit in centerpieces for a frugal and colourful alternative (or addition) to flowers. Wedding Essentials 2012 75

Better or Worse GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB WEDDINGS OFFER GREAT VIEWS AND VALUE

ne of the many allures of golf is the breathtaking scenery and panoramic vistas that define today’s modern golf courses. From the sport’s humble beginnings in the craggy rock and heather-strewn hills and dales of 15th century Scotland, contemporary golf course design has arguably become one of the world’s respected applied arts. Combining the natural beauty of the environment with inspiring landscape architecture, today’s golf and country clubs have become virtual Gardens of Eden that can be as much of a draw as the challenges of the game. So it should come as no surprise to hear that more weddings are being planned at golf and country clubs than ever before. And in Ontario, we are blessed with more than 800 courses to choose from.

TOWN AND COUNTRY “The appeal of a golf course is that it is usually located centrally, completely surrounded by green space. Whether you are a golfer or not, most golf courses have stunning gardens and great views of green, trees and plenty of landscape architecture,” says Gloria Cooper, Marketing Manager for Deer Creek Golf Clubs. “You may be only minutes from major highways and transportation corridors, but you would feel as if you were hours away from anything.” It’s that combination of breath-taking green space, indoor and outdoor venues and top-notch dining experiences that puts the golf and country club venue at the top of the list for many wedding couples. Says Wooden Sticks Event Co-ordinator, Heather Cotie, “Everything is at the same location, making it easy on the guests, the bride and groom and the environment! We offer on-site ceremonies with a rain location, cocktail receptions both on our patio and in our tented pavilion.” Many golf and country clubs offer full 360° service; catering and fine dining, entertainment, accommodations – and even golf. Some have certified wedding planners and co-ordinators who will help you build a custom wedding experience, and most have all-inclusive packages that take some of the planning stress off your shoulders. But across the board, they all have something to meet individual tastes and budget. Photos courtesy of Deer Creek Golf Resort

VERSATILITY You can take advantage of a golf and country club for your wedding in a number of ways. In the summer months, competition for banquet halls heats up. Here the number of golf resorts in Ontario works in the bride’s favour as she hunts for a venue for that perfect date. And just as importantly, golf and country clubs are the ideal venue for virtually any size party, allowing you to scale your event and your budget accordingly. “We have space for a ceremony of any size and style,” says Elizabeth Carnegie, Catering & Events Coordinator for Kaneff Golf. “From a traditional ceremony with 20 guests all the way to 200. We can even accommodate ethnic ceremonies, for example, providing a wedding mandap for our Hindi guests as well as other observances.” Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, many brides and grooms treat their golf and country club experience as a versatile one-stop shop. Couples are not only planning their weddings at golf and country clubs, but they sometimes hold engagement parties, showers, Stag and Doe events or rehearsal dinners all at the same location; this is something that is not always possible at other venues. One-stop shopping affords ease and simplicity, not only in the planning and budgeting of a wedding, but also in knowing that the facility has everything a couple wants under one roof.
PICKING YOUR VENUE This step will take you the longest and may feel frustrating. But the time you spend now will pay off in the long run, since selecting the perfect venue means that a lot of the other decisions about the facility, the cuisine and the dining experience are almost done. First you will need to decide if you’re having the entire wedding at the golf club or just the reception. For some, this is a decision they sometimes make after seeing what their options are because churches and temples can be just as hard to book as banquet halls. And this is one of the first places a golf resort can help you; many of the locations Wedding Essentials spoke with offer planning and consulting services that start with the where. venues TODAY’S GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUBS HAVE BECOME VIRTUAL GARDENS OF EDEN THAT CAN BE AS MUCH OF A DRAW AS THE CHALLENGES OF THE GAME.
ORGANIZING THE DAY Once you’ve spent the time surveying your options and choosing the perfect golf and country club, it’s time to bring the strategy to life. You will want to pick the right location within your golf venue. Even if your plans are to spend the entire day outside, you will want to make sure you’ve looked at your indoor options in the event of rain; all the best weddings have a Plan B. The golf and country club staff is your expert at finalizing these finer points. At Cranberry Golf Resort for example, Wedding Sales Manager Chantelle Poulin works directly with the couple planning their special day. Explains Shane Bage, Marketing Manager, “By arranging the floor plan, the set-up, the food menu and timing, Chantelle makes sure they have everything they need. On the day of the event, Chantelle confirms that everything is going as planned and she is there in case the bride and groom have any concerns or lastminute requirements.”
IRONING OUT THE DETAILS Flowers, decorations and lighting are all important considerations as well and, again, this is where the golf and country club can really help with your decisions. With a variety of rooms and facilities, they can match your wedding size and budget with the right space, decorated to meet your expectations. In most cases, the on-site planner will guide you through the process of working out the table configurations and arrangements, the seating plans and the menu (from hors d’oeuvres to midnight snacks and all the courses in between). Most resorts will let you sample potential menus and work with you to determine the right décor, mood, and experience for your guests. Many can also co-ordinate a wedding photographer, videographer, and even the entertainment. The staff is highly adept at taking care of your guests so you don’t have to. Choosing a golf venue means you can rely on the experts who landscape beautiful grounds, cater delicious meals and host exciting special events on a daily basis. So while you may be new to planning a wedding, for the experts at Ontario’s golf and country clubs, it’s par for the course. Cranberry Golf Resort. Photos: Isis Photography

SHORT LENGTHS If you’ve got gorgeous gams, the short and sassy dresses may be for you. Step beyond the traditional and make a style statement that is modern and refreshing. One of the benefits of a shorter-length gown is the ability to show off your fabulous wedding shoes! Perfect for both a non-traditional ceremony and an evening of dancing, a short dress can also be the “second dress” option for brides who prefer to change midway through their evening. The short length is ideal for a destination wedding either on a warm beach or in Vegas. It may also be easier and more compact to pack for travel.

BRIGHT COLOURS Vera Wang challenged traditional wedding conventions by introducing a black wedding gown in her 2012 collection. In the recent 2013 NYC bridal show she wowed the crowds again with visions in red. Other designers are also hopping on the trend. The vivid colour has long been a traditional choice for Chinese brides, but the rosy glow it gives may appeal to many bold brides. Gentle colours from pale cream to light blush to ice blue have been sighted lately, and it’s become more common to add a black or coloured sash, belt or accent to bring contrast to a white gown.

LACE Ladylike lace is back with a vengeance, thanks in part to the influence of the fashion-forward Duchess of Cambridge, whose elegant Sarah Burton gown gave her a demure, romantic look perfect for a future queen. Lace is versatile and can be used many ways: to create an illusion neckline; to give a sexy yet subdued peek-a-boo back; to create a sheer sleeve; or as an added layer that gives the gown depth. If you want a wedding with vintage style, choosing a modern silhouette with lace accents will give you a timeless elegance making you look as graceful as a true princess – not the animated kind.

3-D EMBELLISHMENTS Modern dresses are exploding with details that practically jump off the dress. If you are looking for a gown that is a showstopper, designers are offering a variety of dynamic choices. Airy, extravagant gowns floated down runways in cascades of fabric, tulle and whimsical details from feathers to flowers. A little movement can set these dresses off in a wave of motion as the details cascade, flutter and dance their way to the centre of attention. Confident brides can make their walk down the aisle even more dramatic in a dress with lots of texture and unique personality.

SLEEVES AND STRAPS Strapless dresses have been dominating the bridal market for years, but it may be time to them to move aside as designers and brides alike are welcoming the return of other classic styles. Not every bride feels comfortable exposing her arms or décolleté. A little capped sleeve is a good solution, offering a hint of modesty without covering the arms completely. Look elegant, allows for foundation undergarments, and feel comfortable. The Greek goddesses are back with stunning one-shoulder straps. Simple or adorned with fabric flowers, this style adds visual height to every bride, elongating the neck and accentuating a pretty up-do. One shoulder gowns are always popular on red-carpet celebrities because it is such a flattering look. Monique Lhuillier 2013 Collection

PEPLUM SKIRTS A nod of acknowledgement has to go to the newest fashion trend that hasn’t been seen for quite some time. Catching media attention at last year’s Academy awards, celebrities such as Tina Fey and Michelle Williams wore the style, and the peplum front has made a surprising appearance in bridal gowns. It’s certainly a modern look, mixing a dash of 1980s glamour and 1950s demure drama (think Jackie Kennedy); the style demands attention. With volume at the hip and cinching the waist snugly, the feminine peplum gives curves where none may exist and can hide trouble spots too.

SPARKLE AND SHINE Every bride wants to dazzle on her wedding day, so dresses that gleam and twinkle with crystals continue to be very popular. Fine details like beading, sequins and crystals reflect off every surface and make a bride look radiant and light-kissed. A white dress becomes even whiter with a little extra sparkle, so if you are a bride who wants all eyes on her, this glittering style will do the job. Works well in ballrooms with lots of lighting, or a bride can glow and glimmer softly with a low-light, candle-filled reception. It’s also a lovely effect for winter brides. Amy & Jason T
ransforming from workout partners to life partners only took five short years! Jason was a trainer at the gym where Amy belonged. After working out together, they developed a friendship that took another step when Jason asked her out. They started dating, and it didn’t take long before Amy says they “became inseparable.” So when Jason proposed on bended knee at a favourite restaurant, Amy quickly agreed, to a round of applause and celebratory drinks on the house. A destination wedding allowed close friends and family to join them for a week of celebration in a place the couple loved. As the ukulele sounds of Kamakawiwo’ole’s “Over the Rainbow” filled the air, Amy walked down the pink rose-strewn aisle with her parents to a gazebo where their friends, family and Jason awaited them. The couple wrote and read their own vows. Amy wore a flowing Maggie Sottero gown, with a “borrowed” flower in her hair from a friend’s wedding, and her “something old” was her mother’s diamond bracelet.

I love her because she has the greatest smile! She’s got a big heart; she’s very generous and is always caring about others. That’s how I know she’ll be an excellent mom some day! I love him because underneath his tough exterior he is very sensitive! Jason is always calm and patient, and he knows how to make me feel special, even when I’m having my worst days. We laughed as much as we cried, especially during the speeches. There were so many funny stories told by family and friends! We cried the whole time! When I (Amy) started walking down the aisle with my parents, I cried. When Jason saw me coming toward him, he cried. I could barely read my vows because I kept crying. The speeches were filled with tears from everybody. It seemed no one could keep it together! Sage advice from the father of the bride, who wisely told the young couple: “Marriage is not 50/50. It is 100/100.”

LOVE NEST BY CHRISTINA MOGK
90 Wedding Essentials 2012
WHEN IT COMES TO LIVING IN SMALL SPACES, EVERY SQUARE FOOT COUNTS. HOW CAN YOU MAXIMIZE YOUR SPACE WITHOUT SACRIFICING YOUR SENSE OF STYLE?
M
any first-time homeowners quickly realize the money they’ve saved for a house is not quite enough to purchase their dream home. Sacrifices are made and this often translates into less space than we would like.
BE PURPOSEFUL! Versatile, multi-functional furniture creates both flexibility and order, and can often double as storage; a crucial thing in a small space! Storage ottomans can be placed at the foot of the bed and hide extra linens. They can also be used as extra seating in the dining and/or living areas. Placing one or more beneath a glass console table will create a welcoming foyer. A pull-out sofa or daybed that can act as a bed for overnight guests can be a saviour, taking up little space when not in use. Decorate rooms with functional but pretty baskets and boxes that can be used to store any number of unsightly items: loose cords, magazines or even pet toys. Modular pieces provide custom solutions for even the smallest spaces. Armless sectional pieces, for example, can be easily moved around to create unique seating arrangements, as required. If your dining room/area is small, consider a table that expands in size, from a romantic dinner for two to a size suitable for dinner parties, rather than a huge table that consumes the room. Hiding your storage in plain view maximizes your space. Select a bed that features deep drawers and/or headboard storage. Opt for tables that offer drawers so that you can hide paperwork and electronic remotes. Don’t forget that shelving and other storage components can be combined in any room to capitalize on vertical real estate. Built-ins are another great solution and can be made to look as if they are part of the wall with the use of push-touch closures.
LET IT FLOAT! Cramming everything you can imagine into a room will only make it feel cluttered and may impede traffic flow. A crowded nest does not inspire love and togetherness; it increases stress and frustration. Spread your furniture out and don’t assume the only option is to place every piece tightly against a wall. Creating special areas or zones will help add volume to the space and create visual unity. To introduce negative space, choose seating with legs rather than skirts, and tables and shelves which do not extend directly to the floor. Though the pieces occupy the same footprint, being able to see the floor beneath the pieces gives the illusion of space and airiness.
PAINT! One of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to decorate is paint. While cool colours and lighter tints generally make rooms look larger, you are not relegated to

home & décor OPT FOR A MORE MONOCHROMATIC SCHEME, USING SIMILAR TONES ON WALLS, WINDOW TREATMENTS AND LARGE PIECES OF FURNITURE. pastels and neutrals. Be bold and vibrant if it feels comfortable, even if just as an accent wall. The important thing is that you create a visual flow from room to room, using tones of the same shade. Opt for a more monochromatic scheme, using similar tones on walls, window treatments and large pieces of furniture. Minimizing the contrast keeps the eye flowing in an uninterrupted manner. This will visually decrease the mass of the furniture and increase the volume of the room. Introducing a variety of textures will add even more depth and interest. Don’t forget the fifth wall: the ceiling. Particularly if you are in a newer condo or loft, most of which feature higher than eightfoot ceilings, this surface represents an opportunity to add a splash of colour and create some drama.
LIGHTEN UP! Why do so many smaller homes feature large windows these days? Lighting makes a huge difference to a space, especially natural light, which will make the space feel brighter and more spacious. But this is helpful only during the day. At night, provide yourself the option of brightening your spaces in the same way. Adding ceiling lights is not always a viable option, particularly if you are dealing with concrete ceilings. Hanging lights, such as swags or even Christmas twinkle lights, might work in some spaces. The failsafe is to make full use of task lighting: floor and table lamps, under-cabinet lighting, even wall sconces (which come in both hard-wired and wireless options). If you can put your lights on dimmers, their utility will increase. Also consider choosing bulbs that offer a more natural light, such as full spectrum lighting. Mirrors and reflective surfaces such as metal, crystal, highgloss surfaces, or iridescent wallpapers can be a designer’s best friend when it comes to visually expanding a space, as they amplify the available light. Do not be afraid to use them!
SIMPLICITY. FLEXIBILITY. VERSATILITY. Add these words to your small space lexicon. Functional space is critical to making a room feel larger. At the same time, focus on the benefits of having a smaller space by finding the natural character of the room so that you can draw your guests in. Embrace the coziness and the opportunity to be that much closer to your husband or wife! Most of all, be open, creative and have fun! SIXPENCE in Her Shoe. THE OFT-FORGOTTEN LINE OF THE POEM FOR BRIDES ENSURES GOOD LUCK AND PROSPERITY Photos courtesy of SilverSixpence.com

ot something in your shoe? If it’s your wedding day, that’s good news. Since the age of Queen Victoria, many a bride from Britain and other Commonwealth countries (like Canada) has followed the longstanding tradition of placing a sixpence in the left shoe for good luck on her wedding day. The complete poem reads, “Something old, something new, Something borrowed, something blue, And a sixpence in her shoe.” Modern brides like to tick off the first four on the list but often forget about the last. What do they all mean, anyway? Something old symbolizes continuity, especially with family. By carrying a token from your mother or grandmother, you are creating a link between their lives and yours.

AND THE SIXPENCE? IT’S A SMALL SILVER COIN MINTED FROM THE 1800S IN ENGLAND CONTINUALLY THROUGH THE DECADES UNTIL 1967. IT WAS WORTH SIX PENNIES.
Something new carries with it the optimism of a fresh life. You and your husband will be beginning a journey together and something new represents that bright future. Something borrowed is an item loaned to the bride from a happily married friend or family member. It is significant because it embodies the hope that the lender’s good fortune in marriage will rub off on the new couple. Something blue is a nod back to history, when the colour symbolized love, purity and fidelity. Blue was a common colour for wedding dresses. Since the Virgin Mary was often depicted in blue, a bride who was pure would usually wear an item of blue, sometimes a ribbon woven into her hemline. And the sixpence? It’s a small silver coin minted from the 1800s in England continually through the decades until 1967. It was worth six pennies. Over the years, the coins have proudly worn the crowned heads of Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, King George V, King George VI, and Queen Elizabeth II. Originally minted in pure silver, they were eventually produced at only 50% silver, and finally had none at all after 1946. Often difficult to find now, a real silver sixpence can be a cherished gift to a bride about to take her long walk to the altar. Online vendors like SilverSixpence.com sell a variety of affordable pieces from a range of years, some first minted more than 100 years ago. Or you can opt for a sixpence pendant or anklet. Of course if you can’t find your own original sixpence, any silver coin will do. For a modern take on the tradition, why not carry the silver coin from the Royal Canadian Mint that has the engraved images of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge? It’s sure to bring extra good luck with the young Royals secretly “attending” your wedding. So after you’ve remembered your other somethings don’t forget to add a lucky coin. You’ll be following in the footsteps of more than a century’s worth of happy brides! Wedding Essentials 2012 95

THE FOODS WE EAT GIVE US ENERGY AND INCREASE VITALITY BY PROVIDING THE NUTRIENTS THE BODY NEEDS, WORKING THEIR MAGIC FROM THE INSIDE OUT. FIND OUT WHAT YOU SHOULD BE EATING TO GIVE YOU THAT GORGEOUS BRIDAL GLOW! BY CATHARINE FAIRWEATHER
SUPERFOODS to Help You Look and Feel Great! ACAI BERRIES Native to Central and South America, acai berries contain antioxidants that protect cells from free radical damage, which can lead to aging of healthy skin cells. They are also high in amino acids and essential fatty acids that help to keep skin healthy. These powerful super fruits are high in B, C and E vitamins — all of which promote healthy skin and hair. Can be eaten fresh, frozen or dried and taste great when added to salads or smoothies. Caution for those with pollen allergies.
BLUEBERRIES Another fruit loaded with antioxidants, these local favourites are high in vitamin C, which aids in the formation of collagen. Collagen is an essential protein for healthy skin and muscle tissue. Blueberries are also high in manganese, which helps convert proteins, carbohydrates and fats in food into vital energy for the body. Eat fresh on your cereal or add frozen to a morning or midday smoothie.
GREEN AND WHITE TEAS Both types of tea are full of powerful antioxidants that are more potent than vitamins C and E at halting free-radical damage to cells. This slows the aging process and may help prevent wrinkles, leaving the skin supple, softer and younger-looking. An added benefit is its link to weight loss in those who consume three glasses of naturally decaffeinated tea daily.

KIWI FRUIT
POMEGRANATE
These pretty gems, commonly grown in New Zealand, are packed with nutrients such as vitamins C and E along with calcium, iron, magnesium and zinc that are vital to healthy skin, hair, nails and teeth. They are high in fibre and phytonutrients that help repair damage to DNA and support a healthy immune system, leaving you looking and feeling more energized. Delicious by themselves, try adding to a fruit salad or mixed with Greek yogurt for variety.
This miracle fruit is loaded with antioxidants that help prevent skin aging and may be a remedy for skin damage caused by the sun. Their antioxidants aid in extending the life of fibroblasts — cells that produce elastin and collagen — that are responsible for your skin’s tone and elasticity. Enjoy a ½ cup serving of juice or fresh fruit 2 to 3 times per week.
OYSTERS
Named chisaya mama, the “mother of all grains,” by the Incas, quinoa is not so much a grain as a seed. Its medicinal qualities come from high-quality protein content, especially lysine, which helps tissue growth and repair. The magnesium it contains also protects cells from free-radical damage. All of these aspects make it a good source of nutrients essential for health skin, hair and nails. Great in salads combined with fresh veggies, or can be used instead of rice. Note: be sure to rinse thoroughly.
QUINOA Oysters are high in zinc and proteins that help maintain collagen levels in the skin, leading to more elasticity and slowing premature wrinkling. Oysters are high in tyrosine, an amino acid, valuable in stabilizing mood and adapting to stress. Indulge once or twice a week as part of your balanced diet.
PAPAYA Also known as the “fruit of the angels,” papaya is low in sodium and high in vitamins A, C and E. Antioxidants contained in the fruit help whiten and moisturize the skin. Papaya also contains the digestive enzyme papain, which aids in digestion, lowers inflammation and helps lessen belly bloat. It can be taken daily as a digestive enzyme supplement or eaten a few times per week.

hen Chantell and Adam realized they were in love, it seems they were the last to know! “It was one of those stories where everyone sees it but us,” laughs Chantell. “We’d been best friends for a long time, but one day we just knew — like a lightbulb went off above our heads.” Adam proposed on a quiet, moonlit beach. He had been carrying the ring everywhere, nervously waiting for the right moment. On one knee, he explained, “I realized from your smile and how you look at me that everywhere and anytime is perfect as long as I am with you. Will you marry me?” Chantell was shocked but finally recovered enough to agree happily. Their two-day, two-cultures wedding meant a week of celebrating and bringing their worlds together. Worried about culture clash, they found instead that, “Everyone did have one thing in common: they loved us no matter what, and with that love they loved one another.”

I love her because Chantell’s intellect only enhances her beauty through the well-poised and deep conversations we have. She is my everything; I could not imagine a life without her. And, she makes great cupcakes! I love him because Adam’s such an amazing, inspiring hard worker and incredibly gorgeous man. He loves me with his whole heart, and is not embarrassed to show it. He is the kindest, sincerest man I’ve ever known. I’m a lucky woman to have him. We laughed when a friend spoke about the keys to a happy marriage and ended it with, “Remember, a happy wife means a happy life!” It was funny to see all the wives and women poking, nudging or giving a knowing look to their guys. We cried during the heartfelt speech from Chantell’s mom. She didn’t leave a dry eye in the house! Even people we had never seen cry before were asking for tissues! Sage advice from Adam’s mother: “Always spend your money and time on creating memories and experiences, not buying stuff. Remember this and you will always have an enriched and valued life.” Sat. A Family AFFAIR A
wedding is a celebration of love and life; of friends and family. After all, your union is the bringing together of two strangers to become one family. The presence of children at your wedding is a joyful reminder to everyone that life is full of wonder and excitement. And making children a part of your wedding is a long-standing way to involve your entire family on your special day that is both meaningful and heart-warming. Success lies in what roles you choose to fill with children and the direction you give them –traditionally, children have filled two important roles: the Flower Girl and the Ring Bearer, both time-honoured and important positions within your bridal party.
THE FLOWER GIRL
Little girls can lend just the right degree of levity to a wedding with their sweet innocence and honest joy at being included in such an important event. Normally, one or two flower girls will participate; you don’t want them upstaging the bridal party. It’s very important to pick little girls who can handle the event – and that is a delicate balance; you don’t want children so young that they’ll be too scared to walk down the aisle or who will dissolve in tears, but equally you don’t want a child so confident that she won’t give up the limelight and lingers in the aisle doing pirouettes. Be fair but firm in this decision. You want everyone to enjoy the day and some really
small tots may not be up to being flower girls. Depending on the children, a good age range is from four to eight. The parents of the flower girl or girls need to make sure the children get a good rest the night before the ceremony. They also are responsible for their clothes. You will provide the basket of flowers — generally a tiny nosegay, baby roses or small bouquet. The flower girl is expected to walk immediately in front of you and your father in the processional, holding a basket of flowers. It used to be customary for girls to strew rose petals along the way up the aisle but this has proven to be unsafe for both brides and guests; and some churches may have rules against it. If she is mature enough, the flower girl may stand next to the maid of honour during the ceremony and follow you and the groom down the aisle afterwards. If the flower girl is too young to stand during the ceremony, she can stand at the front with the wedding party until the bride arrives at the groom’s side and the ceremony begins. Then she can quietly go and sit in the front pew with the bride’s parents or her own. At the reception, the flower girls can participate in the receiving line.
THE RING BEARER Traditionally the ring bearer has been a boy, but today girls also perform this ceremonial task. If your choice is to have a female do the job, she should be dressed like a flower girl. Selecting your ring bearer is similar to selecting your flower girl: make sure to choose a child who possesses the maturity to cope with the processional. The ring bearer’s parents are responsible for the child’s outfit and need to ensure that he or she is well-rested. The ring bearer’s job is to carry a cushion with two fake rings attached to it (the best man will have the real rings). He walks down the aisle in front of the flower girl or beside her and — if he is mature enough — stands with the wedding party during the ceremony. Alternatively, he can stay at the front until the bride and groom meet and then sit in the first pew or join his parents. If he sits during the ceremony he should not rejoin the recessional. The ring bearer can participate in the receiving line but should sit with his parents at the reception. Involving children in your wedding party is a great way to bring light-heartedness and whimsy to an event that really should feel just as much like a party as it does a solemn occasion. WHAT YOU PUT IN YOUR BODY CAN BE JUST AS IMPORTANT AS WHAT YOU PUT ON YOUR BODY. HERE ARE SOME QUICK TIPS FOR AMAZING SKIN. WATER DAILY Keeping your body fully hydrated will plump up your skin, making it soft, fresh and young-looking. Drinking lots of water will also flush out toxins in your body, including some fat, making you feel and look stronger and healthier. By substituting water for other caffeinated beverage favourites, you are reducing your caloric intake as well as the harmful chemicals and caffeine you used to ingest daily. You may even see your headaches disappear and your moods improve!
SLEEP IN
Wedding planning can give you some sleepless nights, we know! But you must do everything you can to ensure you are well-rested and getting an optimal amount of sleep each night. There is some truth in “getting your beauty sleep.” Try for at least six hours a night, preferably eight. A good night’s sleep can give you the fresh, revitalized skin you want to be able to face your day. Put yourself to bed half an hour earlier, to put your body in the mood for relaxation and rest. By sticking to a consistent bedtime schedule, you can ensure your body knows when it is bedtime.

Planning your
DESTINATION WEDDING NAVIGATE THE ROUGH WATERS OF WEDDING PLANNING TO REACH YOUR DREAM DESTINATION! BY JO-ANNE CRAINE
Y
ou’re engaged – congratulations! Your immediate future will now revolve around making an insane number of decisions. One of those will be finding the perfect location for your wedding. Many couples are embracing the growing popularity of destination weddings as a viable and exotic option. Creating one of the most memorable events in your life takes much consideration and detailed planning, and a destination wedding is no exception. The logistics of coordinating a variety of flights and dates can be complicated, but well worth the effort, as you create an unforgettable wedding with your closest friends and family in an exotic, romantic location. Fortunately, both travel agents and resort hotels are stepping up to assist couples in planning the perfect celebration away from home. The range and quality of wedding services being offered by providers has grown exponentially in response to high demand, and they are more willing than ever to meet the specific needs of wedding couples.
WHY CHOOSE A DESTINATION WEDDING? Typically, travel experts say that young couples who consider themselves a little non-traditional are often drawn to select a destination wedding. Megan Crouse, managing director of DestinationWeddings.com Canada explains, “Engaged couples Azul Beach Hotel – Beach Wedding Gazebo
106 Wedding Essentials 2012
are beginning professional careers and need to consider their finances when budgeting for their wedding, especially if they wish to pay for it themselves. So, a combined wedding and honeymoon is an appealing and economical way to have the wedding of their dreams.” The couple who loves to travel, who enjoys something different, and who wants a celebration that lasts a week rather than just one day are the kinds of people who increasingly choose a destination wedding. If you are taking a honeymoon anyway, why not add a few days and include a stress-free wedding?
SELECTING A LOCATION The world is a big place – how will you choose where to go? Before you blindly spin the globe and pick a spot, you may want to sit down with an expert. Crouse says, “Brides often don’t have a specific destination in mind when they seek help. Our travel specialists help them envision their day in order to select the destination and location that would best bring this vision to life.” Seasoned travel consultants, such as Heather Easton of Helen Thompson Travel, have visited a vast array of locations and resorts and are able to make first-hand recommendations because of that experience. “To narrow down choices, we begin with a basic budget and estimated number of guests. From there I want to know what they see in their heads to understand what their image of ‘perfect’ really is.” Don’t be surprised when your travel expert asks you to close your eyes and visualize yourself walking down the aisle. Smart agents will ask you to describe your ideal surroundings – are you on the warm sand; can you hear the waves of a lake lapping against a dock; do you see a garden of flowers or majestic mountains in the background? Not all destination weddings are in tropical locales. If you have an active group of guests who like to golf, shop or do other activities, this should be taken into consideration to help everyone have a good time. Your guests will thank you for it.

Tropical Wedding in Jamaica.
PLANNING FROM HOME You’ve chosen your dream destination and picked a few top resorts. You have confirmed that your wedding guests are supportive, willing and financially able to attend. It’s time to consult with your travel specialist to finalize the booking and nail down the details: Is the date available? If there’s no room on your chosen date, you need to either find a new hotel or a new wedding date. What ceremony times are available? Easton says, “Be sure to book your ceremony with the hotel before you book your trip. Just because you have a room reservation does not mean that they will guarantee you a wedding ceremony! Hotels often book the ceremonies one or even two years in advance.” Is the resort family-friendly or adults only? This is important to know if you have younger family members joining the party. What are the residency requirements? Most Caribbean islands require couples to be in residence for several business days prior to getting married. Sandals’ director of sales and marketing, Maureen Barnes-Smith, says, “Brides need to be aware of the residency requirements, and some couples don’t consider it; they think, ‘I’m flying to Jamaica on Thursday and I’m going to get married on Saturday. That doesn’t usually work.’” Some countries such as Mexico require blood tests for legal ceremonies. This may make you think twice – some couples consider getting a “secret” legal marriage license at home before they leave, and having a symbolic service on location. Are the seasonal temperatures and weather right for your needs? Can you handle 40-degree temperatures in full hair and make-up? Do check to see that your great deal wasn’t because it’s the rainy season. How many rooms will you need? Confirm your group’s numbers as early as possible. Easton warns, “Sometimes friends and family are not able to attend due to financial or medical reasons. People may want to come but can’t get the time off. Often, couples expect more people to attend their destination wedding than actually do.” While this may be disappointing, try not to take it personally. Are there upgrades or group discounts? Crouse notes that wedding groups are getting larger. And there can be benefits to that. Barnes-Smith says that when you book rooms of five or more at Sandals, you are eligible for extra inclusions like a rehearsal dinner, cocktail reception, or special rate pricing. Most hotels and resorts will offer some sort of group rate reward — so be sure to ask.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

Once the essential components are in place, you can begin preplanning the wedding itself. Much of this can be done from home, with the online support and guidance of your resort wedding coordinator or bridal concierge. Many hotels offer a selection of packages; the Palaces Resorts have the Colin Cowie wedding designs, and Sandals has Martha Stewart themes. New this summer, Sandals lets you mix elements and colours with customizable “WeddingMoons” themes, giving couples flexibility for a unique experience.

travel Initially, it’s best to work with your travel expert and the destination wedding coordinator in tandem, ensuring you have filled out any paperwork properly and feel comfortable enough to communicate directly with the on-location planner. You will need to set up a meeting upon arrival to review details. If you are using suppliers from outside the resort, confirm they are certified by their service industry regulations. Cultural or religious elements need to be addressed early. Certain hotels and chains pay attention to the growing number of ethnic couples and can facilitate needs for Hindu or Sikh weddings, or a Chinese Tea Ceremony, for example. Make sure they are receptive to your requests. Additionally, brides may need to take special dietary needs into consideration and think about mobility issues for older guests in their group. Know the rules. Some hotels don’t allow you to bring your own photographer from home. Or allow you to bring an elephant onto the site: last year a DestinationWedding.com agent had a request for an elephant for a Sikh wedding in Mexico. The agent found a supplier, helped negotiate a price, but then learned that the hotel wouldn’t allow an elephant on the premises, and they substituted a horse instead. It all turned out well thanks to expert planning: what could have been a last-minute crisis was averted and the game plan was revised to everyone’s satisfaction. WHEN YOU ARRIVE Once you’ve checked in, confirm your meeting date and time with your wedding consultant. Expect to be shown the physical samples of flowers, cake, and fabrics previously discussed and confirm final selections. Do a walk-around of the potential locations, going through the finer details. Try to set up a meeting with your photographer, and discuss optimal times of day for photos in various locations. You may want to consider a test shoot with him or her early in the week. Barnes-Smith reminds brides, “This is the time to set up appointments for the spa or salon for hair, make-up and other services like a massage or pedicure if desired. Some wedding packages may include a free spa treatment.”
RELAX! With all the decisions made, it’s time to walk down that aisle and prepare to party! Don’t forget to sneak in some alone time away from your group – sometimes the bride and groom can escape to a sister hotel in the same location, or often the couple may stay an extra week after the group goes home. Try to give yourself that private honeymoon time. Crouse says when done right, the process can seem too easy when compared to arranging a traditional wedding at home. “Because destination wedding planning is relatively stress-free, brides feel that they must be forgetting something!” We know it will be a celebration you’ll never forget. oe and Rachel love to travel, so it was not unusual when he surprised her one Valentine’s Day with tickets for a “birthday” trip to Hawaii. Things got more romantic, however, when they took a Catamaran cruise along the beautiful Oahu coast. As the sun was setting, he tapped Rachel’s shoulder. When she turned, Joe was down on one knee, asking her to be his wife in front of everyone on the sailboat! Rachel says, “Of course I said ‘YES!’ and I was the happiest I have ever been in my life!” During the traditional Catholic mass, Rachel looked graceful in her Lazaro gown and carried a special rosary from her mother, which was tied into her bouquet along with a blue Scottish Celtic Tartan from her family’s clan. The reception venue glittered with candlelight and was inspired by a romantic Venetian theme in silver, white, and baby pink.

I love her because from the minute I met her, I was in love with her bubbly charm. Her warmth had me hooked from day one. Rachel’s smile was the first thing amongst many I fell in love with. She puts family first and I knew she would be an amazing wife, and one day an incredible mother! I love him because Joe doesn’t realize how highly people think of him, and that is the most attractive part of him. He is full of class and thinks of everyone else before himself. He is respectful, polite and endearing to everyone he meets. We laughed the most at the speeches. Both of our brothers’ speeches had us and the guests laughing. We cried at the church and especially when I (Joe) was standing with my parents, watching Rachel walk down the aisle with her father. Sage advice from Rachel: “Try to create a 15-minute window for you and your new husband to slip away from everyone else to reflect on the vows you just made, whether it is in a bridal suite, the car ride, anywhere – as long as you have a little time to enjoy each other.”
