uly’s Division Council Meeting (DCM) on Saturday the 14th was a slightly different DCM. First, the division board discussed the four key values: leadership, character building, inclusiveness and caring. In addition to that, we were introduced to East Los Angeles College’s Circle K president and trustee along with division 10 south’s new fundraising coordinators, spirit coordinators, and multiple Kiwanis advisors. Congratulations Ryan Chan on fundraising coordinator! Afterwards, we went outside to practice and learn new cheers in preparation for Region Picnic. Lastly, we had a movie fundraiser/social showing High School Musical, allowing us to enjoy ourselves after the DCM while supporting Key Club.

or years, California has been battling a long term quandary, the infamous drought. It may not be a malevolent murderer on the loose, but it is nonetheless, no laughing matter. To combat the drought, key clubbers from Mark Keppel High School volunteered in the Monterey Park Community Beautification Day at Edison Trails Park on June 20th. Volunteers helped plant drought tolerant herbs, spread seeds, and shovel mulch along the trail and trees. Not only were we able to beautify our local community but, we were lucky enough to be joined by local councilmen and firefighters. Zhuo Zhou remarks, “My favorite part of the event was that I was able to help out to make the city look better! Thank you Key club for giving me this opportunity because I really enjoyed [it]!

t the Home of Angels Swim event, we helped with assisting those with special needs (referred to as an “angel”) enjoy a day in the water, which they usually don’t get the chance to do often. We helped by supervising the angels, swimming with them and giving them food. The annual swim day was held at Granada Park, Alhambra on Friday the 26th. Volunteers enter the pool and are partnered with an angel. We had fun watching over and playing with the angels with the other volunteers. This event is really special because volunteers get a chance to make a difference in an angel’s life and connect with him or her. I [Jessenia] was tasked with watching two siblings: an angel, a young boy, and his little sister. At first my angel would not speak to me,but as we continued to swim he soon learned to trust me which allowed him to speak to me and let me teach him how to swim properly. I also observed the other volunteers and their angels; it was beautiful to see how we all were able to have so much fun and make a difference in these angel’s life. This event was in partnership with Home of Angels and Project Neo. Both are non-profit organizations dedicated to either helping special needs people or after school tutoring and mentoring. Overall, this year’s Swim Day was successful! Thanks to the volunteers, there will be another swim day in August!

Region Picnic

“ hana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten”, quotes Lilo from Lilo and Stitch. On Saturday, June 20th, key clubbers from division 10 south were able to connect with their lionfish “ohana” at the annual region 13 picnic. Members from division 35 east, 35 west, 10 north, and 15 gathered at Country Wood Park to celebrate the beginning of the new term and bond. The day consisted of thrilling icebreakers, pieing of lieutenant governors, and spirit battling. Key clubbers competed in scavenger hunts, singing games, and much more. Besides connecting with our region, clubs were able to fundraise; Mark Keppel High School key club sold delicious spam musubi to raise money for club funds. Stephanie Yin noted that she enjoyed the “fun games and [selling] spam musubi”. Overall region picnic was a memorable and fun event, regardless of the sore throats and sunburns.

“

My favorite part of region picnic was definitely being able to bond through icebreakers and cheering. All in all, the interaction between everyone was definitely the highlight of the day because it allowed us to feel united as Key Clubbers. -Andy Lau 16
