Relay for Life Tie, twist, lift and repeat. Key clubbers building tents repeated those actions multiple times to help set up for Relay for Life. Relay for Life is a nonprofit organization associated with the American Cancer Society that is dedicated to honoring cancer survivors and lost loved ones along with fighting against the disease. Every year, relays are held at communities across the world to help fundraise to fight back cancer. On Friday April 10th, volunteers helped set up for the event by constructing tents, rearranging tables/chairs, putting up signs, organizing brochures and setting up goodies. Volunteer Brandon Lo remarks, “It was very exhausting to set up, but it was for a good cause.” It took trial after trial until the place was set to go, but once it was it was stunning. On Saturday April 11th, the actual event took place at the baseball and grass area of Barnes Park. Volunteers made cards, walked, played, and cheered on the participants. Could their possibly a better way to spend a Saturday than by this? Also, key club president Stephanie Yin received a certificate of appreciation! Can we get a “Oh Yeah”? Overall, this volunteer event was memorable and certainly one for the books.

LA Walk for Kids Just in- Olaf, Elsa, Anna, and beetle headbands are in! Well, at least for key clubbers volunteering at the LA Walk for Kids. On April 10th, volunteers gathered at Exposition Park for the annual Los Angeles Walk for Kids hosted by the Los Angeles Ronald McDonald House Charity. Ronald McDonald House Charities are dedicated to enhancing the health and well-being of children and families across Southern California. The Ronald McDonald House provides a “home away from home for families of seriously ill children. So, how does walking in tutus and Olaf balloon hats exactly help? The 3.1 mile walk is designed to raise money and spread awareness for the services and programs. Volunteers sported fun kid friendly headbands as they guided walkers near the Rose Garden around the route. Key clubbers demonstrated their amazing sign twirling and pointing as they directed the walkers. Besides guiding the walkers, volunteers also pumped up the crowd with cheers and chants. S-u-p-e-r superstars are what you are!

Track and Field Meet GOOO AZTECS! On April 23rd, Mark Keppel High School hosted a rigorous track and field meet against Schurr High School. Athletes, students, and volunteers crowded the field on a cold, yet sunny Thursday afternoon to support their school. Volunteers helped by setting up hurdles, recording scores, cheering on teammates, and other activities. What could possibly be better than showing school spirit while also dedicating your time to service? Sophomore Kristina Kasfy said, “It was really freezing but overall it was amazing. It was fun helping while cheering the runners on.” Even Keppel athletes competing were also able to take the time out of their busy schedules to volunteer. Sophomore and competitor Jackie Duong noted, “It was a bit of nerve wracking event but was pretty fun to watch others compete. This event helped others know what track is about.” Senior Amber Ho remarks, “When I saw that Key Club was offering volunteering to help at the track & field meet, I jumped at the opportunity. I would be able to help while seeing my old friends and the service would be so close!” While Amber Ho “jumped at the opportunity”, athletes literally jumped... in the long jump event that is. Volunteers helping out with the long jump event recorded scores, measured distances, and prepared the sand pit between jumps. Whether or not we won or lost, this service was definitely exciting and unforgettable.
