According to the results of a recent survey made to the locals, the places that are dearest to Helsinki residents include popular historical spots such as Senate Square, Suomenlinna and Kaivopuisto Park, but also many lesser-known areas such as quiet seaside districts, peaceful suburban streets and people’s own homes are important. The exhibition presents these favorite places in the context of Helsinki’s past, making these beloved locations even more fascinating by giving them historical depth. Music! Echoes from the past of a city Exhibition Music! Echoes from the past of a city at Hakasalmi Villa showcases the history of music in an entirely new way: by giving centre stage to music lovers, listeners and enthusiasts, who have also taken an active part in the creation of the exhibition. For the duration of the Music! exhibition, the hall of Hakasalmi Villa, which used to serve as the parlour of Aurora Karamzin, will be repurposed to serve as a concert venue.

The public attractions of Luomus take the visitor from the diverse exhibitions of the Natural History Museum to the green oasis of the Botanic Gardens. The Helsinki Observatory functions as a visitor centre that opens new perspectives on both current research on the universe and the history of astronomy. The Observatory uses the latest technology to present historical items. Exhibitions seek to illustrate and visualise information and to engage and offer insight to visitors. The aim is to provide visitors with an overview of the structure of the solar system and the universe as well as phenomena that can be observed in our sky, and to present both historical and cutting-edge research in astronomy. Completed in 1834 as a result of collaboration between architect C.L. Engel and Professor of Astronomy F.W. Argelander, the observatory building of the University of Helsinki led the way with its ingenious solutions that were soon copied throughout the world. The Observatory currently displays a wide range of original observation instruments, such as the large transit instrument, the meridian circle and the Argelander refractor. The Helsinki Observatory on the Tähtitorninmäki Hill is part of the Helsinki University Museum. The building accommodates not only the visitor centre known as the Centre for Astronomy, but also the offices of Ursa and the University’s Almanac Office.
At the Natural History Museum you can dive into the Gulf of Bothnia, look the king of the forest stright in the eye, explore the wonders of dinosaurs and evolution, observe how a pack of lions guard their prey and be amazed by the huge size of the humpback whale. Hvitträsk, Kirkkonummi Hvitträsk was built between 1901-1903 by architects Herman Gesellius, Armas Lindgren and Eliel Saarinen. The main building, designed in National Romantic style, built of logs and natural stone, was both a common studio and a home for Eliel Saarinen and Armas Lindgren for some years after it was completed. During that time, Gesellius lived in the courtyard building and later moved into the north-wing of the main building after Lindgren relocated in Helsinki. During the early decades, the main building served as both an architectural office and as a cultural home. It was visited by such esteemed figures as Jean Sibelius, Axel Gallen-Kallela and Maksim Gorki. The office’s staff also lived at Hvitträsk, and this is where the plans were drawn up for the Helsinki Railway Station, the National Museum of Finland and the monumental Munkkiniemi-Haaga project, among other grand works. Hvitträsk is also the boyhood home for world famous architect Eero Saarinen, who made his reputation primarily in the United States designing buildings and monuments such as the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri.

LOVIISA Loviisa and Jean Sibelius The 150th anniversary of the great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (December 8th 1865–September 20th 1957) is celebrated all over Finland in 2015 – including of course in Loviisa, where he in his youth spent his summers at his grandmother’s and aunt’s place. The sun, the sea, summer and light filled him with impressions that were to inspire him for the rest of his life. In Loviisa he composed the Kullervo symphony in 1892. The main event of the jubilee in Loviisa is the Loviisa Sibelius Festival on September 10th to 12th 2015, which focuses on high class chamber music. During the Loviisa Sibelius Festival we will among others hear Jean Sibelius’ masterpiece, the Kullervo symphony. The symphony is performed by the Lohja City Orchestra, conducted by Esa Heikkilä. The soloists are the siblings Johanna Rusanen-Kartano, soprano, and Ville Rusanen, baritone. Cellist Jan-Erik Gustafsson is artistic director of the chamber music festival. The Loviisa Town Museum celebrates the maestro with the exhibition Young Jean Sibelius. The exhibition is open from June 10th to September 27th. Guided tours, concerts and dance performances are also organized during the jubilee year. The Sibelius theme can also be noticed in the summer events, as well as in the menus of the restaurants and cafés.

Come celebrate at Tuusula Lake Over hundred years ago some outstanding Finnish artists settled on shores of Tuusula Lake. In 1897, one of the first settlers was author Juhani Aho and his painter wife Venny Soldan-Brofelt. Soon thereafter, painter Eero Järnefelt and his actress wife Saimi built a house in Suviranta. Painter Pekka Halonen along with his wife Maija built their house in Halosenniemi. Poet J. H. Erkko also built a house in Erkkola. The final artist’s home was built in 1904 for Jean and Aino Sibelius in Ainola. The artist community of Tuusula Lake was born. The development of the cultural identity of Finland as a whole, has been greatly influenced by this artist community. That is why we are inviting everyone to celebrate 150th anniversary of Jean Sibelius and Pekka Halonen. The homes of these artists (Ainola and Halosenniemi) are naturally the main focus of the celebrations and grand events. In this Anniversary year, there are many activities all around Tuusula Lake. There are exhibitions, concerts, theatres, and other activities. Something for everyone! Common ideals, a love for nature and their predominant Finnishness kept this artist community tightly together. It became very unique, not alone in Finland, but in the whole world. We are very proud to introduce it to our foreign guests. Text writer: Tarja Vuokkovaara (Finnish)

Photo: The castle of Kastelholm
ÅLAND The castle of Kastelholm The castle, which originally was used as a defence stronghold, was founded in the end of the 1300’s. The stronghold was then rebuilt at different times until the 1600’s when it had become a castle with mainly an administrative function. At the end of the 1600’s the castle was left to dilapidate. The castle has now been restored and is open for visitors.
Bomarsunds Fästningsruiner. The fortress of Bomarsund was built during the years 1832-1854. Åland was Russian at the time and the fortress was intended for the Russian contingents on the islands. The establishment was calculated for 5000 men, which by Åland standards was an enormous building project. It had a big impact on the Åland society and still today the expression “the Bomarsund era” remains. The ruins of the fortress is now one of Åland’s most remarkable historical monument.

SOUTHWEST FINLAND LUOSTARINMÄKI HANDICRAFTS MUSEUM The Luostarinmäki Handicrafts Museum is a unique outdoor museum. The museum is located in the only whole wooden area surviving the Great Fire in 1827. The houses, many of them dating to the 18th century, lie on their original building sites. Today, Luostarinmäki serves as Turku’s handicrafts history museum. Over 30 workshops from different fields of craftsmanship display the City’s handicrafts history and craftsmen’s dwellings. It will offer you an extraordinary experience in an original pre-industrial environment. During the summer season, craftsmen are working in the museum’s workshops. The highlight of the year are the Handicrafts Days in August. During the event you will see masters and journeymen of different professions gathered at the museum. The shops, a post office and a cafeteria serve customers during the museum opening times. The Handicrafts Museum is an internationally renowned tourism attraction. In 1984, the museum was awarded the “Golden Apple” prize by FIJET, the tourism industry writers and reporters association.

Other esker islands are Papinsaari, Huhtsaari and Hietasaari. Harjusaari has numerous beaches and lagoon-like coves which are popular with hikers, boaters and canoers. Pulkkilanharju acts as a south-eastern gateway to the park. A nature path winds its way to the park from the Karisalmi resting place.

TAMPERE REGION TAKE A MUSEUM ADVENTURE! What is Museum Compass of Tampere Region Museum Compass will guide you easily to any museum in Tampere Region. Museum Compass is a shared museum portal of the museums of Tampere Region from which you can find museums and their basic information in an easy and fun way. You can search for the museums by using themes, towns or key words. Every museum has its own information page where the museum is introduced with a short text and photographs. In addition, the page offers information on contact details, opening hours, entrance fees and accessibility. Using the map provided in the information page you can effortlessly find your way to the museum of your choice. Museum Compass was opened in November 2010. It is part of a two-year Museums Online – project of the Pirkanmaa Provincial Museum, enabled by the development grant provided by the Council of Tampere Region. Pirkanmaa Provincial Museum is in charge of the design of the portal and regular updates. Museums have been divided into themes so that everyone can easily find a museum that particularly interests them. There are 15 themes and they have been created in the way that each theme has at least 4 museums. The museums have been able to choose 1-3 themes that are most suitable to their collections and exhibitions. Naturally almost every museum narrates, in addition to the themes they have chosen, of local history of their area. www.museokompassi.fi

time. In addition to these, the Museum offers changing exhibitions with themes related to cultural history. Displays of art are also on the Museum’s programme. Kontti is a learning and workshop space open to the public and you will find the museum shop Vakka on the first floor of the museum. LANGINKOSKI IMPERIAL FISHING LODGE MUSEUM Natural environment surrounding the Imperial Fishing Lodge
Tsar Alexander III visited the Langinkoski Rapids in the summer of 1887 with his wife, Princess Dagmar of Denmark. During this visit, the emperor couple expressed their wish to have a fishing lodge built by the rapids. The Finns were quick to realise the wish and the opening party for the imperial fishing lodge was organised in the summer of 1889. Enjoy a break in the old summer café. It is located on the cliff at the end of Keisarinmajantie road beside the car park. You can spend a refreshing break in the café listening to the soothing sounds of the Langinkoski rapids.
The artefacts in the lodge are original and almost entirely of Finnish making. The lodge has been restored to its original state. The fishing lodge of the Russian Tsar Alexander III and Empress Dagmar – later known as Maria Feodorovna – in the Langinkoski conservation area is the only building of the Tsar that has been preserved outside the Russian borders. The entire area in Langinkoski is steeped in history and there is still an imperial ambiance to the lodge.

SOUTH-KARELIA Barefoot at the Fortress of Lappeenranta South Karelia Museum and South-Karelia Art Museum are located at the Fortress of Lappeenranta in warehouses that were built in 18th and 19th centuries. In the spring 2015 at the museums of the Fortress of Lappeenranta we shall enter barefoot the Karelian Isthmus. Barefoot: 10 Lives in the Karelian Isthmus is a joint exhibition situated in both the South Karelia Museum and South Karelia Art Museum. The exhibition is constructed round ten narrators and all of them are real people. Barefoot is a new way of looking at the early 20th century Isthmus. With an open mind, delicately, with no prejudices. All ten narrators bring their own perspective on the Isthmus. It has a history that belongs to all Finnish people, not only those whose family lived there.
Rautio_1919
Barefoot exhibition is complemented by the permanent exhibition Three Karelian Towns of South Karelia museum. This exhibition relates the central chapters in the history of Lappeenranta, Vyborg, and Käkisalmi (Priozersk), which has been affected by their location along accessible routes on the border of East and West. Like many border towns, multiculturalism has been the defining aspect of these three cities as well. There is also a famous miniature model of the town of Vyborg in the permanent exhibition. It presents Vyborg as it was on September 2, 1939. There is also a mini exhibition for children and a play area with Pekka – the toy barge. NORTH KARELIA The North Karelian Museum is located at the very centre of Joensuu, in the culture and tourist centre Carelicum. The Museum’s mission statement: ”At the same time as providing local residents with an entertaining glance into the history of the town and surrounding area, the museum also raises the profile of the town’s cultural centre in the eyes of locals and tourists alike.” As stated in Joensuu in the year of Finland’s independence 1917. Today, the museum continues on the road paved nearly a century ago. The North Karelian Museum exhibits and records the cultural history of the region of North Karelia. The aspects of Karelian culture covered by the museum also include the folk culture of Ladoga Karelia until the first decades of the 20th century. The exhibitions are visited by a significant number of locals and tourists each year. Travels in Karelia is the current permanent exhibit at the North Karelian Museum. Its main themes are Karelian history and folk culture. Some favourites with our visitors include: Old maps of Karelia and skilfully-crafted miniature replicas of Karelian buildings.
Culture and tourist centre Carelicum in the middle of Joensuu
It is a modern centre for cultural events and information, where you can find out what has happened around here before and what is going on now.
And there is a lot more on offer, besides: remembering evacuees, the splendour of manor houses, industrial past and present, stories from Joensuu, what it means to be a Finn, sauna culture, what can never be forgotten.
”No shore more dear” 6th May - 18th October
The thematic exhibit for 2015 presents the rivers and lakes of Northern Karelia. The exhibit highlights the diverse nature of the region, as well as the importance of the region’s waterways to its development. Suitable for the whole family, the exhibit contains lots of interesting facts about fish, aquatic vegetation, shipping lanes, as well as fun information about all sorts of water-based games and pastimes in Northern Karelia. The region’s main contributory, the River Pielisjoki, deservedly gets a lot of attention in the exhibit. However, plenty of other rivers and lakes reveal their secrets, too. After all, Northern Karelia has an abundance of beautiful waterways. There are also a few watery fairy tale friends to meet along the way, such as Vetehinen and Vellamo, the lady of the lake.

SOUTH SAVO
Riihisaari – Lake Saimaa Nature and Culture Centre Riihisaari is home to the exhibitions of Savonlinna Provincial Museum and the Saimaa Nature Exhibition centre run by Metsähallitus which also provides hiking information. The Provincial Museum concentrates on the history of South Savo and particularly on preserving, studying and presenting the history of sailing on Lake Saimaa. During the summer the unique steamships moored at the museum are open to visitors. Museum Ships Steam schooner s/s Salama ”Salama” was built in 1874 by the Vyborg Workshop, in the transition period from sail to steam. In the evening of 13 September 1898 ”Salama” was on a return voyage from St.Petersburg when the passenger steamer ”Ilmari” rammed her starboard beam near Puumala, south from Savonlinna. The crew and the passengers were rescued, but the ship sank in a depth of 30 meters. Attempts to raise her were unsuccessful and so ”Salama” was left in her watery grave for 73 years. After her mast had been caught in the winch rope of a passing tugboat lumber company Enso-Gutzeit decided to test its salvage gear and raised ”Salama” in 1971. She was restored as a museum ship and opened to the public. In the cargo hold there is an exhibition about the story of ”Salama” herself. Steam barge s/s Mikko Wooden steam barges such as ”Mikko” were a typical sight on Lake Saimaa from the beginning of the 20th century to the 1960s. They were nicknamed as `tar steamers`because of their tarred sides. They carried mainly timber and firewood on Lake Saimaa and to St. Petersburg, Helsinki and Stockholm. ”Mikko” was built in 1914 by the Savonlinna Workshop, and owned by Enso-Gutzeit and it was in regular service until 1967. The company donated the ship to the town of Savonlinna in 1970. The wood-fired steam engines of ”Savonlinna” and ”Mikko” are still intact. Every year both ships make excursions on special occasions.

KASKINEN AN OLD WOODEN TOWN Kaskinen is one of those rare gems, a pristine treasure off the well-worn path. Once you find it, you’ll wish you’d always know this secret. The sea hugs this perfectly preserved eighteen-century wooden town from all sides. Arriving here felt like entering a muchloved children’s book by Astrid Lindgren or Tove Jansson. With its grid-style street plan, Kaskinen resembles Manhattan, but this town was designed by the order of King Gustav III of Sweden in the mid-18th century. To day its protected by the Finnish National Board of Antiquities

CENTRAL OSTROBOTHNIA FIND THE SPIRIT OF CENTRAL OSTROBOTHNIA Central Ostrobothnia’s landscape, with its open fields and river valleys, is largely influenced by its agriculture. The landscape has also been influenced by fast rising land from the sea, which has caused the seashores to move further to the west. The cultural heritage of Central Ostrobothnia includes skilful wood construction. It can been seen from old houses, as well as from sheds and public buildings such as churches and vicarages. The golden age of the tar industry (1700’s - early 1800’s) brought wealth and prosperity to the area, which can still be seen from the high-quality construction of its historic buildings. Housing stock, even compared with the whole country, is very unique and old. Over the centuries, housing has been concentrated by rivers flowing through the province and by coastal trade centres. Many construction innovations have spread along the rivers flowing through the province. The oldest building, built in 1494 is Kaarlela’s Stone Church in Kokkola. The spirit of Central Ostrobothnia can besensed in its local historic museums and numerous events organised in the area throughout the year. The route to Central Ostrobothnia’s rich cultural heritage can be found through Genius Loci website. (http://geniusloci.chydenius.fi) The website introduces visitors as well as local residents to interesting and exciting destinations for independent travelling and adventures in the historical Central Ostrobothnia. The spirit of the province is enriched by historical facts, legends and stories. No matter whether your tour is virtual or physical.

The Havula Villa is one of the most interesting tourist attractions in Kalajoki. It was built by the sawmill manager Oskari Santaholma in 1912. The city of Kalajoki bought the Estate, along with its contents, from the Sasntaholma family in 1992. It was opened to the public after extensive renovations in 1997. In Havula one can become acquainted with both the Santaholma family and their house, witch is a good example of a wealthy bourgeois home with original interiors dating from 1910-30’s.

KAINUU
Kainuu Museum In February 1930, the Kainuu Museum began by the establishing a Provincial Museum Association. At that time, old objects related to the tar combustion and agricultural industries were acquired. Today the museum which is also the provincial museum of the Kainuu region, has about 21,000 items and 360,000 photographs . Kainuu has a long history, the earliest settlements came around 10,000 years ago, as soon as the ice age ended. From the 1500’s, new settlements were established on slash and burn cultivation. Hunting and fishing provided important extra food and income until the beginning of the 1900’s. Similarly, many residents of Kainuu received significant revenues from tar production. Tar barrels were brought by boat to the traders in Oulu, and from there Kainuu tar was sold via Stockholm to various parts of Europe.
Study Tourism Industry in Vuokatti
In the 1800’s, the earliest industry in the region was steel milling. A major change occurred in the early 1900’s, when the railway provided the industry with better operating conditions. The sawmilling and paper industries gave work to thousands of people in Kainuu as lumberjacks, timber rafters and factory workers.

Kajaani City developed around Kajaani Castle (built in the 1600’s) into an urban center of commerce and administration. Prominent figures associated with Kainuu are for example, District Doctor Elias Lönnrot and writers Eino Leino and Ilmari Kianto. President Kekkonen was also from Kainuu.

Impressive EXHIBITIONS
“Thousands of years in the north - the eternal marks in history”
The Regional Museum’s permanent exhibition Northern Ways presents the survival story of man and nature in the North in an open-minded way. The themes dealt with in different exhibition halls traverse time from ancient history to the present, examining the causes and consequences of individual and public cultural developments. On display are hundreds of cultural artefacts, as well as examples of the most characteristic flora and fauna of Lapland. The Regional Museum of Lapland also presents Sami culture in many ways. In addition, an important part of the exhibitions are peasant culture, forest working culture and fishing. The most moving part of the whole exhibition is probably the two models of the market town Rovaniemi. The first picturing it in 1939 and the second presents its destruction after the Second World War, in 1944. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the Arktikum has a number of interesting special exhibitions every year. Provincial Museum of Lapland Arktikum Pohjoisranta 4 FI-96200 Rovaniemi
