From the Editor! Hi Everyone. Welcome to the Summer edition of the Weather Report and the last issue for 2013. Gosh hasn’t the year gone fast. I was talking with a mate recently and we both agreed that even though the year passes with exactly the same speed every year it just seems to go faster as you get older! We have had another great year at WeatherSafe WA. Some exciting new and interesting projects, lots of SlideTrack patio blinds, heaps of shade structures and loads of new customers have joined the WeatherSafe Tribe! So to each and every one of you, new and old, I thank you for your kind patronage throughout 2013 and I wish you all the very best for Christmas and the New Year. Now I’m a bit new at the Facebook thing but we now have our own WeatherSafe WA Facebook Fan page. I would love it if you could ‘like’ our page as it is a social way for us to keep in touch with our customers and let you know what we are up to with our promotions and competitions we are always running. As an incentive we have five $40 vouchers for a meal at the Eaton Tavern to give away to five random people who like our page in the next couple of weeks. We will be running an awesome Australia Day competition through Facebook so make sure to ‘like’ us to get that info.
Well the best thing about summer is the beach .My wife, daughters and I love swimming and surfing at the many beautiful beaches that we are blessed with here on the west coast. So I urge all of you, as I do with my girls, to be extra careful out in the sun this summer and make sure to cover up, slap on the sunscreen and slip on a hat this summer. Why don’t you drop into WeatherSafe this summer and grab one of our great broad rimmed hats to keep you protected through summer. Just mention to the girls that you read the newsletter and Mark said I could have a hat! OK have a great Christmas. We are closing at 1pm on Friday 20th December for our Xmas break and reopening on Monday 6th January. I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year. Regards,
Mark Lewis Mark Lewis General Manager
Don’t Be Scared To Use Some Colour Recently we made some awesome shade sails for a very popular restaurant/ tavern down south .This very popular establishment has a lot of colourful and funky furniture and art .The shade sails chosen were a cream colour and although they looked fantastic and made the outdoor area a lot more comfortable to dine under, I couldn’t help but wonder what a statement it would make with bright ,vibrant colours showcasing the venue. If you are looking to build a shade sail at your place or business don’t be scared to add some colour and make a statement. These days there are lots of bright and exciting colours available that can really liven up your outdoor areas as well as providing well needed shade and comfort. Instead of dark green, try Lime fizz. Change beige to Mellow Yellow. Don’t use terracotta, use Sherbet. Why use dark blue when you can brighten up the place with Jazzberry! Not only are they cool and exciting colours but they have really ‘groovy’ names! We have a huge range of shadecloth choices for you to choose from and rest assured if you’re not feeling so adventurous there are plenty of soft tones and ‘quiet’ colours available so you won’t attract attention! Check out these recent shade sails we installed at the South West Sports Centre.

Coming Soon To WeatherSafeWA There is something impossibly alluring about Bali huts ,maybe it’s the natural raw beauty of the structures , perhaps the serenity they seem to command , or the romantic feelings they conjure up .Either way Bali Huts seem to make you want to throw on a sarong, kick back and enjoy a tropical cocktail or two! . So when the opportunity arose to supply the South West with Bali Huts, I naturally jumped on it! Bali Huts, as the name suggests, have traditionally been used by Balinese to provide protection from the sun and a place to relax. Bali Huts are a great way to create a little bit of a tropical paradise in your backyard and give you that “always on holiday” feel .Perfect for alfresco dining, pool retreat or spa surround, these structures provide a natural living outdoor area. Adding ambience to any space, the huts with their thatched roofs, also offer excellent insulating properties ,helping to keep you around 10 degrees cooler than other types of roofing in the hot summer months, as well as retaining warmth in the cooler seasons. Currently the guys are busy creating a display area for the huts at our WeatherSafe site on Richter Rd which we hope to have completed soon. But in the meantime, if you’re dying to know more, shoot off an email or pick up the phone and we would be happy to send out a brochure. Well that’s all for now, we will keep you updated on our progress on our website, weathersafe.com.au and our FB page …. now where’s my sarong and Pina Colada ?

Joyce’s Cooking Corner “Berry Christmas” Pavlova Ho ho ho! It’s that time of year again, and with it comes an assortment of festive goodies to indulge in. So for this edition I would love to share with you one of my favourite Christmas deserts, a delicious “Berry Christmas” pavlova. As well as looking festive, it tastes sensational! This is what you’ll need: • • • • • • • •
6 egg whites 1 1/2 cups (315g) caster sugar 2 teaspoons white vinegar 1 tablespoon cornflour 300ml thickened cream Mixed berries ( frozen will do ) Icing sugar A few sprigs of mint for garnish
Method 1. If you have frozen berries- make sure they are defrosted before using 2. Preheat oven to 120°C. Trace a 20cm circle onto a piece of baking paper. Line an oven tray with the baking paper. 3. Whisk the egg whites with a mixer in a clean, dry bowl until soft peaks form. Gradually add sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating well until thick and glossy, and the sugar is dissolved. 4. Add the vinegar and cornflour and fold with a large metal spoon until just combined. Spoon the mixture onto the prepared tray. Using the traced circle as a guide, use a spatula to shape into a 20cm disc. Bake for 1 1/2 hours or until dry to the touch. Turn off oven and leave, with the door ajar, to cool completely. 5. Use an electric mixer to whisk cream in a bowl until soft peaks form. Transfer pavlova to a serving plate. Top with cream, berries . Garnish with mint leaves and dust with icing sugar. 6. Remove from pan and let cool on a wire rack. Store loosely covered (If they last long enough for storage!) Merry Christmas everybody!

Gardening Tips With Kylie Gardening Tips from Our Resident Green Thumb Finally, summer has arrived and apparently , we are in for a long, hot one. Apart from winning a major lottery, this is the best news sun worshippers and beach goers (myself included) have heard! Not so for our gardens that will be in need of extra attention and pampering during our blistering hot summers.
Mulch, Mulch, Mulch! Ok so we all know that Australia has one of the driest climates on earth and with climate change according to the experts, this is set to worsen with longer, hotter summers .With increasing stress on our water resources it is vital that we conserve water .One way we can do this is with mulch! Yes “mulch” is pretty much on the tip of every gardener’s green thumb and is singularly the most effective way in preventing water loss ! Mulch is readily available from commercial garden suppliers , or alternatively - make your own as I do! Now you can buy a compost bin or build a 1 metre x 1metre enclosure with chicken wire .I like to avoid the fuss and use a patch of dirt in the yard. So here’s some goodies you can add to the compost pile (with no particular quantities) Shredded newspaper or cardboard •
Leaves – need to be chopped or you can crunch them up by hand
•
Grass clippings and small twigs
•
Fruits and vegetables
•
Egg shells, ground coffee bean and tea bags
•
Fireplace ash
A useful tip -don’t use meat /fish or cheese products as you may find animals foraging through the heap! ! If you happen to have chooks, a sheep or stray cow roaming around chuck in some of their poo. Rule of the green thumb- do not use poo from a carnivorous animal! Ok so start by using a layer of shredded newspaper , cardboard or leaves topped with a bit of nitrogen-rich “green” materials, such as grass clippings, plant-based kitchen waste (vegetable peelings and fruit rinds) .Top this with a few shovels full of garden soil followed by more newspaper, plant cuttings , leaves , small twigs. Repeat this till your mound is about a metre or so high. After a few weeks, turn the pile with a pitchfork working the outside into the centre . You should see steam rising, which means the ingredients are breaking down. Be sure to keep the pile moist not soggy . Gradually, you will see the pile turn into a rich, crumbly, nutrition loaded compost ready to spread over your appreciative garden . Ok so that it from me, have a safe and happy Christmas and happy gardening!

WaterProof Ute Canopies. Our new impulse welder continues to astound us with its ability to weld canvas. It is quite amazing and we have really put these welds to the test to see what they can handle. We tied a piece of canvas with a welded join down the middle onto the back of one of our utes and took it for a trip down to Busselton. We let it flap like crazy down and back again and the join held perfectly. We are now confidently welding all the canvas joins on our ute canopies to ensure an almost invisible seam that is totally leak proof and water tight! We have also discovered a waterproof zip. It is a bit dearer than normal zip but we have given it the ‘hose test’, a very high tech piece of R&D, where we squirted the hose at the zip to see just how waterproof it really is. We are pleased to announce that its waterproof qualities are very good and are now offering it as an option for all our ute canopies. So together with sealed roof rack holders, our unique hold down straps at the front and the reliable stayput tonneau loops WeatherSafe ute canopies are without doubt the best quality ute canopy available.
