From the Editor! Welcome to the Spring edition of the Weather Report our favourite time of the year. Lots of things happen in Spring and perhaps the best thing is that the days start to get a bit longer and a bit warmer after our winter hibernation. I’m looking forward to the AFL grand final and the Melbourne Spring racing carnival – the Melbourne Cup especially. Here at WeatherSafe WA we have had a busy winter mainly supplying our Slidetrack blinds, making outdoor patios, verandas and alfresco areas that couldn’t normally be used during the winter months nice and cosy and useable. You know these blinds are great all year round so we are looking at giving our customers the best possible deals on patio blinds during the Spring months. Spring is also a time to start thinking about putting your Shadesails back up if you have taken them down over winter. We normally start at the end of September and spend a month reinstalling our customers sails that we removed in Autumn. More about that later in the newsletter.
1...2...3...What! 4c Per Second! There is an advertising blitz on Australian TV to use 1234 phone directory assistance. It’s a very expensive tool to use. Sensis, as you may or may not know, is a subsidiary of Telstra. The 1234 number is replacing the Telstra 12456 directory assistance number, but this time with outrageous costs attached: 40c to call the number, then 4c A SECOND!
Anyway have an enjoyable Spring!
By law, Telstra have to provide a FREE directory assistance number,because they are still majority owned by the government. They choose however not to pass this number on to the public.

Donnybrook Sound Shell Opening Concert is a Huge Success After several months of planning, the portable sound shell designed by Dave Doherty from Marindi Fabrications and the WeatherSafe team, had its grand opening at ‘The Amphitheatre’ in Donnybrook Commissioned by the Donnybrook / Balingup Shire, the sound shell has been designed to be easily dismantled and transported to almost any venue in the shire. Opening night attracted a crowd of over a thousand music lovers who enjoyed the sounds of local and metro artists. “The Sound shell sits neatly in front of our Amphitheatre and will become a focal point for many community cultural and musical functions. It will breathe new life into the town.” Shire President Steve Dilley said. “It’s a credit to the foresight of the shire councilors and a great asset for all the people of the Donnybrook / Balingup Shire”
Industry Association Changes Name WeatherSafe WA has been a member of the ‘Australian Canvas and Synthetic Products Association’ ACASPA since our inception back in 1975. Knowing the value of changing your name to something that conjures an image of what it is that you actually do, like we have done recently, WeatherSafe applauds the association on changing its name to The Specialised Textiles Association. STA provides support to all its members in the form of business advice and accreditation as well as conducting an annual Trade exhibition and Awards for Excellence night. So how does this benefit our customers? As members we are bound to abide by the Associations code of ethics which stands most member businesses head and shoulders above non-member competitors as far as providing ethical goods and services and ensuring high standards of workmanship and customer service are always provided ASSOCIATION to our customers.

Annual Shade Sail Service Did you know that WeatherSafe has an annual remove store and reinstall service for all our clients with shadesails? Although most WeatherSafe SunBan shade sails and shade structures are suitable to remain up all year, some shadesails just should be taken down at the end of Autumn and reinstalled in Spring. We do this for several reasons but mainly to let the light in during those dreary winter months or because they are very big and are susceptible to storm damage in high winds. Whatever the reason, we offer a service where we take the sails down, check them over and service them where necessary, store them over winter and put them back up during Spring. We charge on an hourly basis for the first service and then we hold that charge for the next three years. If you buy a new shadesail from us this summer we will do the first years’ service for free. City Of Bunbury Athletics Stadium The new Athletics Stadium at Hay Park Bunbury was recently opened by the Minister for Sport and Recreation Terry Waldron. It was commissioned by the City of Bunbury at a total cost of $3.67m and Bunbury CEO Greg Trevaskis was instrumental in obtaining funding for the project, $2m from the Federal Government and $1.67 from the State Government. The track is constructed to IAAF standards so could conceivably hold state and national meets though there is not enough lanes or seating to hold an international event. The surface is the same as the Beijing Birdsnest and the line marking has been calibrated to the millimetre. It is the most state of the art track outside of any metro area in Australia. WeatherSafe WA was fortunate to win the contract to supply a 98m Cantilever shade structure along the 100m sprint lane.
Mick Malthouse Visits Bunbury I was lucky enough to meet Mick Malthouse at a recent morning breakfast seminar held by Bankwest. Mick spoke about teamwork and leadership as well as telling a few stories about his time with Collingwood and the West Coast Eagles. He refused to elaborate on a couple of pointy questions about his relationship with Eddie Maguire though! Thanks to Peter and the team at Bankwest Bunbury for their kind invitation

ECONOMICS Suppose, that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this: • • • • • • •
The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing. The fifth would pay $1. The sixth would pay $3. The seventh would pay $7. The eighth would pay $12. The ninth would pay $18. The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.
So, that’s what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. “Since you are all such good customers,” he said, “I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20.” Drinks for the ten now cost just $80. The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would
get his ‘fair share?’ They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody’s share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay. And so: • • • • • •
The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings). The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33% savings). The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7 (28% savings). The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings). The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings). The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).
Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But once outside the bar, the men began to compare their savings. “I only got a dollar out of the $20 declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man, “but he got $10!”
“Yeah, that’s right,” exclaimed the fifth man. “I only saved a dollar, too. It’s unfair that he got ten times more than I!” “That’s true!!” shouted the seventh man. “Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!” “Wait a minute,” yelled the first four men in unison. “We didn’t get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!” The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up. The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn’t have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill! And that, ladies and gentlemen, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

The lesson here is that a shadesail must be engineered to be able to handle any weather situations. One of these sails used under engineered poles and they snapped when under tension in strong winds. They also used a cheap shadecloth. All this adds up to a cheap sail at the time of purchase but a real headache and expensive lesson in the long term. WeatherSafe Wins National & International Awards WeatherSafe WA has been awarded Certificates of Excellence in recent industry awards both here in Australia and the USA. The team won the Award for the Basketball Structure installed at the tiny Aboriginal community in Punmu, approx. 450kms south of Port Headland in the Great Sandy Desert. The project was a very rewarding experience for not only the WeatherSafe crew that erected the structure but for the Margaret River Rotary Club, who helped fund the project and of course for the residents of the community.

The structure that won the award is a 25m wide by 36 m long BarrelVault with nine side sails depicting the Aboriginal Flag in Punmu 120kms east of Telfer.
WeatherSafe WizKids WeatherSafe WA sponsors a segment on our local radio station every Wednesday morning, the WeatherSafe WizKids. This is where local school kids come into the radio station and read out the weather report for the week. This has been a great hit with all the local schools and kids are lining up to read the weather live on the radio during the Radio West ‘Cliff & Nae’ morning show.
