About Our Mission

CSUSB Outdoors’ mission is to provide the community with a diverse range of outdoor recreational and educational opportunities. We incorporate “Leave No Trace” and cultural/ historical knowledge about the areas we visit. Participants will learn how to recreate safely in the great outdoors, develop an appreciation and understanding of our natural surroundings, experience personal growth and leadership development, learn teamwork and healthy communication skills, form new relationships, and of course . . . have fun!

Register for trips and programs in person at the CSUSB Student Recreation and Fitness Center. All our trips are open to anyone 18 and over unless otherwise noted.

Trip Cost

CSUSB students and SRFC members pay the lowest price. Others are priced as followed: Faculty, Staff & Alumni Association members/Affiliate/Community Members.

Includes

All trips include transportation, qualified leaders, activity instruction, all camping and entrance fees, and specialized equipment. Most of our trips include some meals, with the exception of travel meals while on the road. For more information about a specific trip, please refer to the trip information sheets on our website at camp.csusb.edu.

Cancellation and Transfering Policy

All trips must be paid in full at time of enrollment. To cancel your participation, you must contact (909) 537-BFIT. Failure to contact CSUSB Recreational Sports at least 72 hours in advance will result in a 100% loss of fees or a fee equal to the trip’s value. 72 hours to 7 days will result in a 25% cancellation fee or a fee equal to 25% of the trip’s value, minimum $10. Cancellations more than 7 days will result in a full transfer of fees or a refund minus a $10 processing fee. You will also be responsible for any non-refundable fees incurred due to your cancellation. Transferring trips/ programs constitutes a cancellation and is subject to the aforementioned policy. Transfers must occur at the time of trip cancellation. Trip values can be found on our website. All refunds are by check and take 4-6 weeks to process.

Family Outings*

A few specified trips are open to youth 15 and over when accompanied by an adult. All participants must be in a dequate physical fitness.

Camping Yosemite Camping

Yosemite National Park is one of the first wilderness parks and most popular in the United States. Yosemite is best known for its waterfalls, but within its nearly 1,200 square miles you can find deep valleys, grand meadows, ancient giant sequoias, a vast wilderness area, and much more. While there, we will be camping in the park and taking side trips to view the thousand foot granite walls, some of which include the famous El Capitan, exploring the valley and taking in the scenery. Anacapa Island Camping

12 miles off the coast of California beholds the gorgeous Channel Islands, a collection of isolated and preserved nature. Over the weekend we will be exploring the eastern Anacapa Island, viewing some of Southern California’s best ocean views, sunsets, and sunrises. This cliff lined island features the unique Arch Rock, a historical lighthouse, extensive wildlife, and just seven campsites. Come to Anacapa Island for an exciting yet relaxing weekend on the Pacific. Grand Canyon Camping

We’ve all seen images of the canyon on print or on screen but there is nothing like arriving at the rim to take it all in – the immensity, the depth, the atmosphere, and the light. During this three day, two night camping trip, we will be setting up camp at Mather Campground and taking a one day to hike to Plateau Point where you’ll have great views of the Colorado River that formed the towering canyons all around. Anza Borrego Mud Caves

Join CSUSB Outdoors while we explore Anza Borrego Desert’s relaxing natural hot springs, Kumeyaay pictographs and the famous mud caves. Zion Camping

To experience Zion, we will camp out and hike among its towering cliffs. During the trip, we’ll be canyoneering along the famous Zion Canyon Narrows on The Virgin River. If you’re up to the challenge we’ll hike the famous Angels Landing Trail filled with switchbacks ascending over sheer cliffs with chains bolted into the rock face to serve as handrails. Yosemite Winter Exploration

This is an excellent chance to visit California’s most popular park in its winter glory, without the crowds. We will set up base camp in our HEATED tent cabins in Curry Village and take side trips to visit waterfalls, snowshoe among the giant sequoias, explore the valley, and take in some scenic vistas Yosemite is a winter wonderland! Joshua Tree Camping

Exploring Joshua Tree National Park will give you two extreme experiences. Over our two day visit, we will see a vast number of hills of Creosote and Joshua trees of all sizes. In addition, we will see enormous boulders that seem as if they were placed there by some outside force. After setting up camp, cooking dinner, and watching the beautiful sunset behind the mountains, it will turn dark and the stars will illuminate giving the best view of the constellations. Sequoia Winter Exploration

Sequoia National Park is home of THE largest tree in the world, General Sherman. Similar to Yosemite, Sequoia National Park is hidden high up in the Sierra Nevada and covered in granite peaks, domes, rivers, lakes, and trees. Our time will be spent exploring Sequoia in all its winter glory by snowshoes and cross country skis. We will be staying two night at the heated Wuksachi Lodge. Experience a true mountainous winter in Sequoia National Park on our Sequoia Winter Exploration. Mojave Camping

Mojave National Preserve is one of California’s newest National Preserves. On this two day, one night trip we will explore lava tubes, summit the 650’ high Kelso Dunes, and hike the “Hole-in-the-Wall” Trail. We will be traveling by foot and car by day, and nights will be filled with warm campfires and s’mores. Death Valley Camping

Death Valley National Park is a place filled with great beauty and natural wonderments. We will camp and explore the dramatic colors of the desert landscape as well as the historical features of the park. We plan to visit Badwater, the lowest point in the western hemisphere at 282 feet below sea level, explore the lunar landscape of Zabriskie Point, play on the sand dunes, tour the famous Scotty’s Castle, and much more. Catalina Camping

Join us as we ferry over to Catalina Island for five wonderful days of service and exploration. We will have the opportunity to snorkel, kayak, hike and swim in the amazing coves around Catalina Island. We will also be learning about and helping our hosts preserve the natural grounds of this fragile ecosystem by learning to compost, repair trails, remove invasive plants, and many other useful projects. Our meals will be provided by the camp’s food service and we will be staying in cabins just a few feet from the ocean. This is the best deal you’ll find for Catalina! Climbing Trips San Antonio Falls Canyoneering

Enjoy the views of San Antonio Canyon from a new perspective while descending four 80 foot waterfalls. After hiking to the near top of the waterfalls, participants will learn to use rappelling gear and rappel right through San Antonio Falls. This trip is great for a true adventurer or beginning adrenaline junkie. Intro to Climbing

Join CSUSB Outdoors as we travel to some of the area’s best spots to climb. We visit sites with routes appropriate for beginners and more advanced climbers. We will cover the basics of climbing: knot tying, belaying, general equipment use, and basic climbing technique. Prepare for this trip by getting some climbs in on the SRFC Climbing Wall.

Bishop Climbing

During this amazing trip, we will travel up to the scenic Sierra Nevada and explore two of California’s climbing gems: Alabama Hills in Lone Pine and Happy Boulders in Bishop. With over 2,000 boulder problems to choose from on two principle rock types such as the pocketed Bishop tuff to the crimpier frictiony quartz monzonite. We shall climb our hearts out for the weekend until our bodies are content before our drive back to the SRFC Sunday night. Trip includes transportation, climbing gear, most meals, and leaders. Pinacles Climbing Weekend

Rising out of the chaparral-covered Gabilan Mountains, east of central California’s Salinas Valley, are the spectacular remains of an ancient volcano. Massive monoliths, spires, sheer-walled canyons and talus passages define millions of years of erosion, faulting and tectonic plate movement. These are the unique characteristics of Pinnacles National Park, the newest national park in the country! Climbing in Pinnacles has long attracted climbers from all over the world due to its rock spires and crags found all throughout the region. Join us as we explore the area and set our own climbing anchors to these rock formations. Join CSUSB Outdoors on one of the featured Hike of the Month for a one day adventure to a spectacular local hiking destination. This is a great opportunity to take a “saunter,” as John Muir put it, and escape into the wilderness, if only for a day. BACKPACKING Zion Backpacking

Zion allows you to follow the paths where ancient native people and pioneers once walked the land. With massive red sandstone cliffs that soar into a brilliant blue sky, you can expect unforgettable views from every direction you look. Our backpacking trip will take place in the northwest section of Zion National Park where we will enter the backcountry via the La Verkin Creek Trail and make our way into the Kolob Canyons. Our destination will be Kolob Arch, which is arguably one of the longest spanning freestanding arches in the world measuring at 287.4 feet (87.6 meters). Don’t miss out on this adventure packed trip! Grand Canyon Winter Backpacking

The Grand Canyon is one of the most visited national parks in the United States, but most people only get to see it from the rim of the canyon. Enjoy four days in the canyon backpacking under the snow covered rim. Snow generally doesn’t fall into the canyon itself but makes for gorgeous views from inside. Possible snowy conditions together with backpacking make this a great and unforgettable experience! The Grand Canyon is known for its extremities, towering walls and immense length. Within those miles of the Grand Canyon are hidden gems including Havasupai. Spend your spring break backpacking and exploring a wonder of the world. Highlights of this trip include backpacking through Havasu Canyon, enjoying multiple falls including Mooney Falls and Havasu Falls, swimming in turquoise colored waters, and sleeping under a blanket of stars. Kayaking Pismo Beach Kayak

Big Bear Lake Kayak

We will head to Pismo Beach along the Central Coast of California for a weekend of camping and ocean exploration. After a night of camping and a lesson, we will head for the Pacific. Depending on the conditions, we will explore the arches, caves, and rock gardens off Shell Beach, which are only accessible from the water or launch from historic Port San Luis where we’ll venture along spectacular coast of San Luis Obispo Bay and San Luis Obispo Creek Estuary. This trip is designed for the beginner but enjoyed by the experienced.

Big Bear Lake is located in the San Bernardino mountain range at approximately 6,750 ft. surrounded by a thriving forest full of pine trees such as the Ponderosa Pine, Jeffrey Pine, and Sugar Pine. We will meet at the SRFC at 8am to pack up the van with the necessary gear for a successful trip. It’s a short one hour drive up the mountains and once there, we will kayak on Big Bear Lake! Afterwards, we will get lunch and then explore the town. We will stop for dinner before heading home (not included).

Kayaking the Black Canyon of the Colorado River below Hover Dam is awesome! It’s the perfect kayaking adventure in Black Canyon. The lower Colorado River is moving flat water with no rapids - just beautiful green waters. It is perfect for beginner and seasoned paddlers alike. Our kayaks will take us between towering cliffs and looming canyon walls as we navigate the flat moving water of the river. Kick off the holiday with an enjoyable kayak paddle! We will first grab a bite to eat then head out into Huntington Harbor for a nighttime paddle. We will then enjoy the dazzling holiday light displays of the lavish homes that line the canal while warming up with hot cocoa and caroling. Santa Monica Urban Adventure

Santa Monica is the end of Route 66 but the beginning of an adventure of a lifetime. The Santa Monica Hostel will serve as our base of operation on this urban adventure. We will visit the 100 year old iconic Santa Monica Pier, which includes a solar powered Ferris wheel and the Heal the Bay Aquarium. A short bike trip to the pier will bring you to the world famous Venice Beach! At night, we will discover the Third Street Promenade, a premier shopping center which attracts crowds from all over Southern California but still has the laid back feel of the beach. TRACKS Funding for TRACKS Service Trips is provided by ASI, the Office of Community Engagement, and Recreational Sports. Students can attend ONE FREE TRACKS monthly or weekend trip per calendar year.

Join a group of CSUSB Students on these volunteer service and community engagement trips! Students will have the opportunity to work with one another on service projects that are designed to examine issues of justice, diversity, and social responsibility in our community. In addition to the 2-4 hours of service work, our trips will include fun recreational activities. These monthly and weekend trips are FREE and open to CSUSB Students only. The objective of the TRACKS Alternative Break program is to involve students in service projects to learn about a community they would typically not know about. The goal is for students to take the intensity of the program/experience and transfer the lessons learned to their own community upon their return. Cultural CA Science Center Day of the Dead Downtown LA

If you are looking for a cultural experience you’ll find it in Downtown L.A. We will begin our tour on Olvera Street, the birthplace of the City of Los Angeles, otherwise known as EI Pueblo Historic Monument. This colorful village features 27 historic buildings and a traditional Mexican style plaza. We will then head over the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) stopping at the Grand Central Market for lunch. MOCA is the only museum in Los Angeles devoted exclusively to contemporary art. It houses one of the nation’s most renowned permanent collections.

CicLAvia is a car-free street event that offers miles of road for participants to explore. CicLAvia makes the streets safe for people to walk, skate, play and ride a bike. Coffin Creek Haunt

The Coffin Creek Haunt is something all of the Inland Empirians should experience. This Corona house and creek is home to what used to be 13 coffins that were lifted during severe flooding in the 1930’s. Remains from some coffins were never found and authorities had to call off the search when things got too creepy in the nearby woods. You will partake in one of 5 haunted attractions. This rewarding hike offers spectacular views of nature and wildlife. We will board the Palm Springs Tram and head up to the top of the mountain. At the top we will strap on our snowshoes and hike along the trail, breaking around noon for a leisurely lunch. Tram ticket, snowshoes, leader, transportation, and lunch are included.

Come enjoy the serenity of the San Jacinto Mountains as we snowshoe under a full moon! This rewarding adventure offers a trip out of the ordinary. At the top of the mountain we will strap on our snowshoes and hike along the trail. Snowshoeing is both a great workout and an awesome way to experience nature. For dinner we will stop at a local restaurant (remember to bring money) and reminisce about the night in the snow covered mountains.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT COURSE Develop your outdoor leadership skills through this interactive and exciting course. Participants will be learning both leadership and technical skills in classroom sessions and on outdoors trips.

Technical skills include: equipment, food preparation, logistics and clothing needs. Leadership topics include: decision making, critical thinking, informal interpretation, teaching skills, leadership qualities and styles. The course includes 4 on campus workshops, 2 one-day trips, a multi-day training trip and a 16 hour Wilderness First Aid Course. All class sessions are required. Take this opportunity to expand your leadership abilities in the outdoors. This course is required to apply and interview to become a Volunteer CSUSB Outdoors Leader.
