CSUSB Adventure

Offers something for everyone! Our trips are designed for the beginner and enjoyed by the experienced adventurer. Trips are planned and led by qualified CSUSB student leaders.

Who Can Participate?

SRWC Members are able to register for trips online at adventure.csusb.edu or in person at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center on the San Bernardino Campus. Current Non-fee paying faculty, staff, retired/ emeritus faculty/staff, continuing students, visiting faculty, and CSUSB Alumni Association Members, Affiliates, and Sponsored Guest can register for trips in person at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center on the San Bernardino Campus.

Activity Level

Although no experience is required to participate some trips require more physical fitness than others. Our trips are divided into 4 levels of difficulty. Please see our website for specific trip difficulty levels.

Located between Running Springs and Big Bear, Snow Valley offers an escape from the much busier slopes of Bear Mountain and Snow Summit. We will leave campus at 730am for a short drive up the hill and gear up. We will start with a lesson for those that need it and spend the day on the slopes. This trip is perfect for both beginners who need a bit more instruction and those of us who think we are Shaun White and are ready to hit up the terrain park. We will be arriving back at campus around 600pm. Come enjoy the serene beauty of the San Jacinto Mountains through snowshoeing. This rewarding hike offers spectacular views of nature and wildlife. We depart from campus at 800 am and drive up to a winter wonderland. Once there we will board the Palm Springs Tram and head up to the top of the Mountain. At the top we will strap on our snowshoes and hike along the trail, breaking around noon for a leisurely lunch. Tram ticket, snow shoes, leaders, transportation and lunch are included. Yosemite National Park is one of the first wilderness parks and most popular in the United States. Yosemite is best known for its waterfalls, but within it’s nearly 1,200 square miles you can find deep valleys, grand meadows, ancient giant sequoias, a vast wilderness area, and much more. While there, we will be snowshoeing and hiking through the park. Each night we will stay at the cozy Yosemite Bug Resort.

Death Valley National Park is a place filled with great beauty and natural wonderments! We will camp and explore the dramatic colors of the desert landscape as well as the historical features of the park. We plan to visit Badwater, the lowest point in the western hemisphere at 282 feet below sea level as well as explore the lunar landscape of Zabriskie Point, play on the sand dunes, and much more.

Mojave Camp and Explore

On this two-day trip we will explore lava tubes, summit the 650’ high Kelso Dunes, explore Mitchell Caverns, and hike the “Hole-in-the-Wall” Trail. We will be traveling by foot and car by day and night will be filled with warm campfires and s’mores. Ensenada Service Adventure

Catalina Island Service Adventure

Make a difference in the world this spring break! Travel with CSUSB to Ensenada Mexico, a beautiful city on the west coast of Mexico for week of service, learning and exploration. Our time will be spent volunteering and assisting the community and when not working on service projects we will experience the local cuisine and culture of this fantastic region. We will stay 4 night at Rancho El Refugio, situated in a farming community in the hills overlooking Ensenada. Highlights of the trip include; volunteering in the community, ocean kayaking, exploring local community, shopping, and enjoying local cuisine.

Join us as we ferry over to Catalina Island for 5 wonderful days of service and exploration. We will have the opportunity to snorkel, kayak, hike and swim in the amazing coves around Catalina Island. We will also be learning about and helping our hosts preserve the natural grounds of this fragile ecosystem by learning to compost, repair trails, remove invasive plants and many other useful projects. Participants will be putting in approximately 25 hours of manual community service during their one week stay.

Zion allows you to follow the paths where ancient native people and pioneers once walked the land. With massive sandstone cliffs of cream, pink, and red that soar into a brilliant blue sky, you are guaranteed a week to remember. Our days will consist of, hiking the Hidden Canyon Trail, Kayenta Trail and the Upper Emerald pools! No trip to Zion would be complete without a visit to the famous Angels Landing trail filled with switchbacks ascending over sheer cliffs with chains bolted on the rock face to serve as handrails. Zion’s unique array of plants and animals will enchant you as you absorb the rich history of the past and enjoy the excitement of present day adventures.

Flagstaff Arizona Urban Adventure 5/22-5/25 Fri 12:00pm-Mon 7:00pm Activity: 2 Sign Up/Pre Trip: 5/13, 6:00pm Come with us on this urban adventure to explore one of the great cities of the American Southwest. We will learn about the culture, heritage, and nature of this historical city. Resting right on Route 66, this north-central Arizona settlement is encircled by the Coconino national forest. Surrounded by one of the largest pine forests on earth, Flagstaff features many fascinating attractions such as the Sunset Crater Volcano, Walnut National Monument, and Native American ruins. It is also an astronomical centre, home to the Lowell Observatory (the site of the Pluto discovery) and the meteor crater used as training ground for the astronauts that went to the moon.

Yosemite National Park is one of the first wilderness parks and the most popular in the United States. Yosemite is best known for its waterfalls, but within its 1,200 square miles of wild lands you will find deep valleys, grand meadows, ancient giant sequoias, and much more. While there, we will be camping in the valley and taking side trips to view the thousand foot granite walls, some of which include the famous El Capitan, exploring the valley and taking in the scenery.

Sequoia National Park is home to deep canyons, caverns, mountains and the world’s largest trees, giving us plenty to see and explore! Join us on this three-day, two night adventure as we explore some of the best this area has to offer including Crystal Caves, Morro Rock and General Sherman, the biggest tree in the world.

Words alone fail to describe the magnificent landscape of Grand Canyon, which has awed and inspired generations of beholders who are fortunate to witness nature and its effect at their grandest scale. During this four-day, three night camping trip, we will stay at Mather Campground, attend a ranger presentation, hike to Plateau Point, watch sunrise from Desert View and to take in the full view of the Colorado River.

This trip will feature John Muir’s One-Day Excursion, a full day (16+ hours of hiking) of seeing the best Yosemite has to offer. Our first night we will take it easy, set up camp and get some rest to energize for the following day. We will start our epic journey at 4am to catch the majestic sunrise. Then journey to; Glacier Point, Sentinel Dome, Illilouette Fall, Nevada Fall, the top of Liberty Cap, Vernal Fall, the Mist Trail and the Merced River. San Jacinto Backpack

Mount San Jacinto is the second highest most prominent mountain in Southern California. It is home to magnificent granite rock faces, alpine forests, and wildflower covered meadows. Our journey begins with a ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. After a short 2 mile hike we will set up camp. After a good night’s rest we will attempt to summit before packing up camp and return to CSUSB.

Yosemite Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in North America with a total drop of 2,425 feet. That’s as tall as the Sears Tower plus Eiffel Tower combined! Within Yosemite’s nearly 1,200 square miles you can find deep valleys, grand meadows, ancient giant sequoias, a vast wilderness area, and much more. After a night of camping we will explore the Valley some before backpacking up the north rim to campout near the top of the great falls.

Lost Coast Backpack

6/24-6/29 Wed 8:00am-Sun 10:00pm Activity: 4 Sign Up/Pre Trip: 6/17, 6:00pm A 25-mile backpacking (packs 40+ lbs.) adventure through the untamed stretch of coastal land on the infamous Lost Coast Trail in Northern California. We will explore the coastal landscape backpacking on sands of the beach and the grasslands of the steep cliffs. Along with the beautiful landscape, there is admirable wildlife of sea lions, mountain lions, deer, Roosevelt Elk and more. Come paddle one of the most gorgeous stretches of coastline in Southern California. On this scenic ocean tour of Palos Verdes you will experience warm sunny coves, craggy headlands, views of Catalina Island and forests of giant kelp teeming with sea life. You will have the chance to see dolphins, seals, pelicans, bright orange garibaldi and several other marine animals.

Kayaking the Black Canyon of the Colorado River below Hover Dam is the perfect kayaking adventure. The lower Colorado River is moving flat water with no rapids - just beautiful green waters. It is perfect for beginner and seasoned paddlers alike. We will explore side canyons, hot springs and campout a night on the river’s edge. One of our most popular destinations!

What better way to spend the weekend then camping and kayaking along the Central Coast of California. After a night of camping and a kayak lesson we will head into the waters of beautiful Morro Bay where an abundance of sea life awaits. SoCal Surf

La Jolla Snorkel and Hike

SoCal is a prime location for surfing. If you have ever wanted to learn to surf, this is the trip for you! Our enthusiastic leaders will give you a shore lesson and help you catch some waves. Come and enjoy a day surfing and playing Frisbee on the beach. There will also be plenty of time to play in the sand, join a game of beach volleyball or stroll along the coast line.

Cool down and head to the beaches of La Jolla with CSUSB Adventure where you can swim, snorkel and enjoy the wildlife. Snorkelers will see lots of garibaldi, the California state fish, as well as half-moon, yellow tails, sardines, rockfish and even some friendly leopard sharks. After exploring the shallow seabed, we will head to Torrey Pines State Reserve to explore the high broken cliffs and deep ravines overlooking the ocean.

Kings River Whitewater Raft and Camp

We meet at the SRWC at 8am to load up the van and head up to Kings River Expedition Base Camp to spend the night camping under the stars. After a heart riverside breakfast we will gear up and head down 8-10 miles of Class 3 whitewater awesomeness. No experience is required, as instruction will be provided. The Middle Fork of the American is the perfect mix of thrills and amazing scenery. This Class IV river is ideal for the thrillseekers, experienced rafters or athletic beginners. With 18 miles of whitewater this adventure is sure to thrill. Experience the unique tunnel chute rapid; a tunnel blasted through the mountain back in the gold mining era. We will camp 2 nights right on the South Fork American River in Lotus, CA and visit the Marshall Gold Discovery State Park where the California Gold Rush began. Whale Watch

The whales travel 10,000-12,000 miles round trip every year between their winter calving lagoons in the warm waters of Mexico and their summer feeding grounds in the cold Arctic seas. After our “three hour tour” we’ll have a picnic lunch at the beach. Trip includes transportation, boat ticket, leaders, lunch and fun. During this amazing trip we will travel up to the scenic Sierra Nevada Mountains where we will explore two of California’s climbing gems: Alabama Hills in Lone Pine and Happy Boulders in Bishop. With over 2000 boulder problems to choose from on two principle rock type such as the pocketed Bishop tuff to the crimpier frictiony quartz monzonite. We shall climb our hearts out or for the weekend until our bodies are content before our drive back to the CSUSB Sunday night. Trip includes transportation, climbing gear, most meals, and leaders.

Activity: 2 Sign Up/Pre Trip: 48 Hours Prior to Program Challenge yourself to reach new heights on the CSUSB Leadership Challenge Center (LCC). We will have various teambuilding and climbing challenges for all abilities. Ride the zip line, jump for the trapeze or walk across a balance bean 30 feet in the air. We start with a visit the Palm Springs Art Museum, which features a sophisticated collection of art spanning the 19th - 21st century and will enjoy the rest of the night at VillageFest. Getty Villa Museum Activity: 1 Sign Up Deadline: 4/17, 6:00pm

Get a feel for Los Angeles as we explore Downtown Los Angeles (DTLA)! We will start at the historic Union Station, the last of the great train stations and then head to Olvera Street known as the birthplace of LA. We will also explore Chinatown, The Broad Museum, ride Angels Flight Funicular, eat at Grand Central Market, browse The Last Bookstore and end the day with a view from the OUE Skyspace.

Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center in Los Angeles is home to a variety of European paintings, drawings, sculptures, illuminated manuscripts, decorative arts, and European and American photographs. It is located on a hilltop with a perfect panoramic view of the entire city of Santa Monica, from coastal beaches to the city scape itself.

The Huntington Library contains an extensive collection of rare books and manuscripts, some of which include historical documents about Abraham Lincoln, the manuscript of Benjamin Franklin’s autobiography, and is the only library in the world with the first two quartos of Hamlet. In addition to the library, the institution displays an art collection and botanical gardens. Join us on this eloquent visit to one of the most prestigious libraries in the United States. The J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa in Malibu serves as a museum and educational center dedicated to the study of the arts and cultures of ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria. With its location along the Pacific Coast Highway, the whole premise is full of unique sights, from the gardens inside the Rome influenced architectural buildings, to the views of the beach. ADVENTURE LEADERSHIP PROGRAM (ALP) Develop your outdoor leadership skills through this interactive and exciting course. Participants will be learning both leadership and technical skills in classroom sessions and on adventure trips. Technical skills include equipment, food preparation, logistics and clothing needs. Leadership topics include decision making, critical thinking, informal interpretation, teaching skills, leadership qualities and styles. Take this opportunity to expand your leadership abilities.

Prerequistes:

-Must be a CSUSB student, faculty or staff -Have a CA Driver License -Pass a background check -Have a minimum of a 2.0 GPA

This course is required to apply and interview to become a Volunteer CSUSB Adventure Leader.
