About Our Mission

CSUSB Outdoors’ mission is to provide the community with a diverse range of outdoor recreational and educational opportunities. We incorporate “Leave No Trace” and cultural and historical knowledge about the areas we visit. Participants will learn how to recreate safely in the great outdoors, develop an appreciation and understanding of our natural surroundings, experience personal growth and leadership development, learn teamwork and healthy communication skills, form new relationships, and of course . . . have fun!

Registration

Register for trips and programs in p erson at the CSUSB Student R ecreation and Wellness Center or at the Palm Desert Campus Administrative Offices (RG 203). All our trips are open to anyone 18 and over unless otherwise noted.

Trip Cost

CSUSB Student and SRWC members pay the lowest price. Others are priced a s followed: Faculty, Staff & Alumni Association Member/Affiliate/Community Member.

Includes

All trips include transportation, qualified leaders, activity instruction, all camping and entrance fees, and specialized equipment. Most of our trips include some meals, with the exception of travel meals while on the road. For more information about a specific trip, please refer to the trip information sheets on our website at camp.csusb.edu.

Cancellation and Transferring Policy

All trips must be paid in full at time of enrollment. To cancel your participation, you must contact (909) 537-BFIT. Failure to contact CSUSB Recreation & Wellness at least 72 hours in advance will result in a 100% loss of fees or a fee equal to the trip’s value. 72 hours to 7 days will result in a 25% cancellation fee or a fee equal to 25% of the trip’s value, minimum $10. Cancellations more than 7 days will result in a full transfer of fees or a refund minus a $10 processing fee. You will also be responsible for any non-refundable fees incurred due to your cancellation. Transferring trips/ programs constitutes a cancellation and is subject to the aforementioned policy. Transfers must occur at the time of trip cancellation. Trip values can be found on our website. All refunds are by check and take 4-6 weeks to process.

Camping Yosemite Waterfalls

April 28 - 30 // 12pm - 10pm Pre-Trip: Tuesday April 25 @ 5pm

Yosemite is home to countless waterfalls and the best time to see these falls is during the spring. We spend 2 nights tent camping in the valley and 2 days visiting 8 of the best waterfalls the park has to offer. Heights of the falls we will visit range from 2,425 ft. Yosemite Falls to 370 ft. Illilouette Fall. Shooting Star Drive-In

Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument spans nearly 1.9 million acres of America’s public lands. From its spectacular Grand Staircase of cliffs and terraces, to the wonders of the Escalante River Canyons, the Monument’s size and remote character offer a wide range of places to explore! Before the adventure is over, we will sit back and relax in a classic 1960’s car and watch a film at the Shooting Star Drive-in. Grand Canyon Camp & Explore

May 26 - 29 // 8am - 8pm Pre-Trip: Tuesday May 23 @ 5pm We’ve all seen images of the canyon on print or on screen but there is nothing like arriving at the rim to take it all in – the immensity, the depth, the atmosphere, and the light. During this 4-day, 3-night camping trip, we will be setting up camp at Mather Campground and taking a one day to hike to Plateau Point where you’ll have great views of the Colorado River that formed the towering canyons all around. $160 | CSUSB Student or SRWC Member $190 | Faculty, Staff, & Alumni Association Member $205 | Affiliate $320 | Community Member

Sequoia Camp & Cave

Muir Day Yosemite

June 18 - 20 // 8am - 10pm Pre-Trip: Monday June 12 @ 5pm Sunday night we will take it easy, set up camp and get some rest to energize for the following day. We will start our epic journey to catch the majestic sunrise from Glacier Point. Then, Sentinel Dome, Illilouette Fall, Nevada Fall, the top of Liberty Cap, Vernal Fall, the Mist Trail and the Merced River. On our saunter, we will be treated to wide sweeping views of the valley, including Half Dome and El Capitan. Yellowstone

You’re invited to discover the magic of the world’s first national park: Yellowstone! While visiting this great American landscape, you will be able to see natural geological features, as well as wildlife such as bears, bison, and moose. Yellowstone is home to one of America’s greatest natural wonders, Old Faithful Geyser, and many other geothermal features. Yosemite Tuolumne Meadows

August 25 - 28 // 8pm - 10pm Pre-Trip: Monday August 21 @ 5pm Tuolumne Meadows is a gentle, dome-studded meadow section of Yosemite National Park. Lying at 8,600 feet, Tuolumne Meadows is the gateway to Yosemite’s High Sierra, a stunning wilderness of flowery meadows and oceans of sparkling granite. Zion National Park

September 8 - 11 // 8am - 10pm Pre-Trip: Thursday August 31 @ 5pm

To experience Zion, we will camp out and hike among towering cliffs. During the trip, we’ll be canyoneering along the famous Zion Canyon Narrows on the Virgin River. If you’re up to the challenge, we’ll hike the famous Angels Landing Trail filled with switchbacks ascending over sheer cliffs with handrails chain-bolted into the rock face. Backpacking Joshua Tree

April 7 - 9 // 2pm - 10pm Pre-Trip: Tuesday April 4 @ 6pm Unique in its wonder, this desert land scape is known for its giant granite boulders, forest of Joshua trees, and its unmatchable sunset sky. As we make our way through the canyon the stillness will be met by birds and other animals scurrying away. Exiting the canyon, our horizon will expand as we see the vastness of Joshua Tree National Park. Cucamonga Backpacking -T.R.A.C.K.S.

In an effort to give back to the environment and community, CSUSB Outdoors is partnering with the San Gorgonio Wilderness Association, a non-profit group dedicated to protecting the San Bernardino National Forest to perform much need service in the Cucamonga Wilderness. This beautiful wilderness includes spectacular vistas, pines and bighorn sheep. On this 2 night backpacking trip we will enjoy the wilderness perform trail work, brushing, and graffiti or fire ring removal. Join us and give back to our local wilderness. $20 $53 $66 $80

Lost Coast

The Lost Coast is an untamed stretch of coastal land in Northern California. The stretch of coastal range received its name, “The Lost Coast,” because it was too difficult to continue the California’s Pacific Coast Highway through the region. The coastal landscape is filled with beautiful mountain ranges, steep cliffs, and flat beaches. We will begin our coastal journey at the Mattole Beach trailhead and backpack 25 miles over the span of four days and three nights, all while exploring the diverse landscape and beautiful view of the ocean. $150 | CSUSB Student or SRWC Member $180 | Faculty, Staff, & Alumni Association Member $195 | Affiliate $300 | Community Member

Zion Narrows

July 29 - August 1 // 8am - 10pm Pre-Trip: Monday July 24 @ 5pm Listed as one of the “Best Hikes Ever,” the top-down hike in the Narrows of Zion can only be described as memorable. The Narrows is a slot canyon with sheer cliffs rising a thousand feet above you. We will be camping on the banks of the Virgin River. Not only will we be spending a night in the Narrows but we will spend two more days exploring all the things this inspiring park has to offer. Yosemite - Half Dome

August 18 - 22 // 8am - 8pm Pre-Trip: Tuesday August 14 @ 5pm

Yosemite National Park is one of the first wilderness parks and one of the most popular in the United States. Yosemite is best known for its waterfalls, but within is its nearly 1,200 square miles, you can find deep valleys, grand meadows, ancient giant sequoias, a vast wilderness area, and much more. While there, we will be backpacking through the park for a total of three nights and four days, one of which we will summit the iconic Half Dome, 8,839 ft (2,964 m). Yosemite’s backcountry is your destination to escape into the wilderness for some amazing sights and experiences, so don’t miss out on this adventure filled trip! $150 | CSUSB Student or SRWC Member $180 | Faculty, Staff, & Alumni Association Member $195 | Affiliate $300 | Community Member

Palisades

August 29 - September 2 // 10am - 3pm Pre-Trip: Tuesday August 22 @5pm

This is one of the greatest backpacking trips in the Eastern Sierras. After spending a night acclimatizing we will backpack along Big Pine Creek to the legendary Palisades, the longest 13,000 – 14,000-foot peaks in the lower 48 states. We will travel 16 miles (3600’ elevation gain) over 3 days exploring several of the alpine lakes and the largest Glaciers in the Sierras. Trans - Zion Backpacking

September 6 - 12 // 8am - 10pm Pre-Trip: Wednesday August 30 @ 5pm

The “Trans-Zion” is a multi-day backpacking hike that travels from one corner of the park to the other. This trek is a strenuous and beautiful hike and involves a lot of elevation gains and drops over 5 days and 47 miles. This will be our longest backpacking trip ever! Hike of the Month Join CSUSB Outdoors on one of the featured Hike of the Month for a one day adventure to a spectacular local hiking destination. This is a great opportunity to take a “saunter,� as John Muir put it, and escape into the wilderness, if only for a day.

After hiking to the near top of the waterfalls, participants will learn to use rappelling gear and rappel right through San Antonio Falls. Urban Adventure

San Diego, known for its beaches, parks, warm climate, and beautiful landscape. Beyond the great things of San Diego, there are many communities that are in need for various reasons. Through the T.R.A.C.K.S. program, CSUSB Outdoors and students will be serving those in need over the weekend while staying in a hostel in San Diego. Along with the great project opportunities we will also explore San Diego and experience a great weekend among peers learning about the area’s culture.

We will have the opportunity to explore the area by kayak, by foot, surfboard and bike. The Monterey Hostel will serve as our home for 3 nights as we explore the area. San Francisco Urban Adventure

On this 3-night, 4-day trip we will explore the best the city has to offer by bike, by foot and by boat. Cultural Huntington Library

July 6 // 9am - 5pm The Huntington Library contains an extensive collection of rare books and manuscripts, some of which include historical documents about Abraham Lincoln, the manuscript of Benjamin Franklin’s autobiography, and is the only library in the world with the first two quartos of Hamlet. In addition to the library, the institution displays a rich art collection and many specialty gardens. Join us on this elegant visit to one of the most prestigious libraries in the United States.

First we’ll visit the Palm Springs Art Museum which features a sophisticated collection of art spanning from the 19th - 21st century. we will enjoy the rest of the night at Villagefest. Every Thursday evening, downtown Palm Springs transforms into a diverse array of artists, artisans, entertainers, and purveyors of fresh fruits and veggies, flowers, jewelry, snacks and sweets. LA Arboretum and Norton Simon

Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa in Malibu serves as a museum and educational center dedicated to the study of the arts and cultures of ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria. 8 Things to do in LA Before you Die

Los Angeles has it all! On this monumental day we will experience 8 “Bucket List” items that showcase the diversity, art, architecture and food of the City of Angels. Our day will start with a walk on some the Secret Stairs of Silver Lake and then head to the breathtaking Disney Concert Hall for a tour. We will lunch at Philippe the Original, the inventor of the French Dip Sandwich and we will make a withdrawal at the Sprinkles Cupcake ATM. Next we will check out the Watts Towers Art Center as we make our way to world famous Pink’s Hot Dogs for dinner. We will round out our day with a stop at the Griffith Observatory and a stop at the Chandelier Tree. Bring money for meals. Highlights include the Secret Stairs of LA, Disney Concert Hall, Watts Towers, Griffith Observatory and the Chandelier Tree. Broad and MOCA LA Museum

Experience an awesome adventure at two of LA’s most popular museums. The Museum of Contemporary Art, LA has one of the most compelling collections of contemporary art in the world, comprising roughly 7,000 objects, and has a diverse history of ground-breaking, historically-significant exhibitions. Then we will experience the Broad, LA’s new contemporary art museum, home to two thousand works of art, prominently pieces from postwar and contemporary. Specialty Venice Beach Bike - T.R.A.C.K.S.

Bungee Jump

April 23 // 6am - 8pm This trip is for the extreme thrill seeker within you! The day will start with a hike in the east fork of the San Gabriel River which will be crossed at different points. After trekking 4.5 miles we will arrive at the Bridge to Nowhere. Once we arrive at the bridge the time will be yours to take a leap and dry off those wet clothes you may have gotten from the river. Sandboarding and Bodyboarding

Pt. Mugu is located in the Santa Monica Mountains with rocky bluffs and natural sand dunes. We will climb to the top of the sand dunes and sand board down. Just imagine snowboarding but on sand dunes. After a few runs on the sand we will head to the beach for some body boarding. Kayaking Big Bear Lake Kayak

April 8 // 8am - 10pm

The city of Big Bear Lake is located in the San Bernardino mountain range at approximately 6,750 ft (2,060 m) with plenty of recreation activities and sights to fill a whole weekend. Surrounding the lake is a thriving forest full of pine trees such as the Ponderosa pine, Jeffrey pine, Sugar Pine, Lodgepole pine, and others. We will meet at the Student Recreation and Fitness Center at 8am to pack up the van. Then it’s a short 1 hour drive up the San Bernardino Mountains. Once there, we will explore the town and have lunch. Afterwards, we shall get ourselves situated for kayaking in Big Bear Lake! So Cal Surf Kayak Overnight

This trip is designed for the new or experienced surfer looking for a more relaxing experience than our one day trip. Our destination is Carlsbad State Beach, where we will set up camp and get a few waves in before relaxing by our camp fire and calling it a night. The next morning starts with breakfast and more time riding the waves. April 29 - 30 // 8am - 8pm Pre-Trip: Tuesday April 25 @ 6pm Prepare to set sail for adventure! Santa Barbara is Southern California at it’s finest. Also referred to as the American Riviera, Santa Barbara has beautiful beaches, majestic mountains, and colorful culture that makes Santa Barbara a premier destination. We will enjoy a night’s campout near the beach and kayak around Santa Barbara harbor for a fantastic view of this spectacular city. May 12 - 14 // 2pm - 10pm Pre-Trip: Tuesday May 9 @ 5pm Join us for a weekend of camping and ocean exploration along the Central Coast of California. After a night of camping and a lesson in Kayaking we will head into the waters of beautiful Morro Bay and the Pacific where an abundance of sea life awaits you. Highlights include arches, grottos, wildlife, and kelp forests. Our tour will also include a visit to the sand dunes of Morro Strand. This trip is designed for the beginner but enjoyed by the experienced!

Big Bear Lake is located in the San Bernardino Mountain range at approximately 6,750 ft. surrounded by a thriving forest full of pine trees, such as the Ponderosa Pine, Jeffrey Pine, and Sugar Pine. We will meet at the SRWC at 8am to pack up the van with the necessary gear for a successful trip. Before making the short one hour drive up the mountain to kayak on Big Bear Lake, we will first take part in a meaningful service project. Afterwards, we will get lunch and begin our kayak adventure on the beautiful Big Bear Lake. Before heading home, we will explore the town and have dinner (not included).

A river older than California itself, the Los Angeles River has more history to it than we could even imagine! After a morning drive we will take a journey few people have taken. We will explore a fun and peaceful stretch of the LA River, kayaking a total of 2.5 miles. It is one of the most exciting experiences LA has to offer. Kings River is a famous whitewater river located in the Sierra and Sequoia National Forests. Kings River originates high in the Southern Sierra and flows through Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks. We meet at the SRWC at 8am to load up the van and head up to Kings River Expedition Base Camp. We spend the night camping and wake up and head down the river on a whitewater rafting adventure. Snorkeling in La Jolla Cove is one of the most popular summertime activities in La Jolla. Our enthusiastic leaders will give you a shore lesson and help you catch some waves. Come and enjoy a day of surfing and playing Frisbee on the beach. Don’t feel like surfing? T.r.a.c.k.s. These trips are offered at a reduced rate, thanks to support from ASI, the office of Community Engagement, and Recreation and Wellness. Join a group of CSUSB Students on these volunteer service and community engagement trips! Students will have the opportunity to work with one another on service projects that are designed to examine issues of justice, diversity, and social responsibility in our community. Leadership Challenge Center The State of the art Leadership Challenge Center is designed to provide team-building, leadership development, and personal growth programs for CSUSB students, departments, clubs, businesses and the community. Adventure Leadership Program Develop your outdoor leadership skills through this interactive and exciting course. Participants will be learning both leadership and technical skills in classroom sessions and on outdoor trips. Technical skills include equipment, food preparation, logistics and clothing needs. Leadership topics include: decision making, critical thinking, informal interpretation, teaching skills, as well as leadership qualities and styles. The course includes three on campus workshops, two 1-day trips, a multi-day training trip and a 16 hour wilderness First Aid Course. All class sessions are required. Take this opportunity to expand your leadership abilities in the outdoors. This course is required to apply and interview to become a Volunteer CSUSB Adventure Leader.

Prerequisites:

In order to register for the Adventure Leader Program course, you must be CSUSB student, faculty or staff, have a CA Driver License, pass a background check, and have a minimum of a 2.0 GPA.
