A Quick Primer on Playing Handball
Marko Vujosevic
A QUICK PRIMER ON PLAYING HANDBALL Handball is a fast-paced game that requires players to work cohesively as they dribble a ball up the court to score goals.
T
he aim of the game, which is played in two 30-minute periods, is to get the ball into an opponent’s goal as many times as possible. As such, players have to think fast and display agility and quick reflexes as they move, as they are only allowed to take three steps with the ball. While players are not allowed to kick the ball (other than the goalkeeper), the sport has been described as a cross between basketball and football. The fast pace means players take many shots, so it is not unusual to see games where each side scores more than 20 or 30 goals. A team of officials are typically on hand to ensure the game runs smoothly.
Benefits
Handball offers a range of benefits to players, including physical benefits such as upper body strength and all-round agility. Due to the sudden change of direction and pace, players tend to be very flexible, and their cardiovascular fitness also improves tremendously. From a mental perspective, the sport improves self-confidence and mental focus.
