A Brief History of Handball
Handball is one of the oldest ball games in the world, and is believed to have been played in the baths of Ancient Rome. An incarnation of the sport called pelota later became popular in France and Spain. Handball was adopted in the UK in the 16th century, where it was known as fives. The modern game’s immediate forerunner was a version developed in Ireland, where competitors have enjoyed the sport for around 1,000 years. In the 1850s, town and country championships were played across Ireland using hard, leather-clad balls. The Irish took the game with them when they emigrated, introducing it to the United States in the 1880s. Phil Casey is credited with creating the first walled handball court in America, in Brooklyn, New York. Today, handball is mainly played in the US, Canada and Ireland, with some interest in Argentina, Mexico, France, Australia and New Zealand. International competition in the sport has been stimulated in recent years through global events presented by the United States and Canada.
