Doric racer Will Davison heads into the V8 Supercar Championship weekend in Perth full of confidence after recording his first win of the season in New Zealand last month. In a wild weekend of racing at the revamped Pukekohe Park Raceway, Davison had success in the third race, which was also the first victory for Ford in the new Car of the Future era. The big points haul across the Tasman has seen the Pepsi Max Crew FPR driver take a 31 point series lead over defending Champion Jamie Whincup. “We have made good inroads with the car, which is the main thing at this early point

in the year,” Will Davison said. “We are racing hard and smart and that is proving to be the right thing, but the main focus remains improving the car in all areas.” Davison is hoping to continue his impressive form this weekend, which has seen him finish on the podium in three out of nine races this year. “I am looking forward to heading back to Perth because I had great success at Barbagallo Raceway last year with two victories. “The race for this year’s V8 Supercar title is just heating up, so every point is going to be crucial at this early stage.”

7

Mark Winterbottom’s frustrating start to the 2013 V8 Supercar Championship continued in Auckland, New Zealand last month. A 13th place finish was the best result for the Pepsi Max Crew FPR driver in the four races across the Tasman, despite good speed from his Ford Falcon. Tyre issues in two of the weekend’s races and contact with Jamie Whincup’s race car during Sunday’s opening race, saw Winterbottom slip down the field and out of podium contention. “I have never had a weekend like I did in Auckland, in my career. I don’t know how to view it because my car was so quick

there and without that, we wouldn’t have had much to show,” Mark Winterbottom said. Winterbottom is only nine points outside the top 10 on the V8 Supercar Championship table and knows success in Perth this weekend will be crucial to his title aspirations. “I need to ensure that we can use our speed in Perth and get good results because it’s one of the closest V8 Supercar seasons I can remember. “After getting a race win at Barbagallo Raceway last year, I am confident I can get back inside the top 10 this weekend.”

John Bowe is hoping to extend his unbeaten start to the 2013 Touring Car Masters Series at Barbagallo Raceway in Perth this weekend. The Doric racer dominated the first round of the series at Sydney Motorsport Park in March aboard his Ford Mustang, winning all three races and recording a commanding series lead. “I’m extremely pleased, and to start the series with three race wins is an excellent result. In any motorsport competition good people, good engines and good teamwork make it happen, and we have got all of that this year,” John Bowe said. “My car ‘Mustang Sally’ is better than it has ever been and it’s nice to know that you have good gear under you.” This weekend will be the first time a round of the Touring Car Masters Series will be held in the west in two years. Bowe is looking forward to returning to Barbagallo Raceway and knows he will have a fight on his hands to remain the series leader. “It’s going to be a tough weekend in Perth because a couple of strong rivals will return and they will bring fast new race cars. However I am up for the challenge and I know with my great team behind me, I can finish at the top of the field.”

UP&DOWN AT SYMMONS

12

Doric Team Honda Racing riders had a mixed start to the 2013 Australian Superbike Championship in Tasmania last month. In the opening round at Symmons Plains, Jamie Stauffer just missed out on a podium after he finished fourth in both of the weekend’s races. “It wasn’t the start to the season I was hoping for in Tasmania. Trouble in the Superpole made us miss the third session and that meant I couldn’t start from the front row,” Jamie Stauffer said “I got really good starts in both races and was pretty consistent for a while, however my pace wasn’t quite there. Hopefully I can find the extra speed before the next round in Queensland in June.” Team mate Josh Hook was also unlucky not to finish on the podium in Tasmania. He recorded two fifth place finishes despite an early crash. “The crash in the opening race at Symmons Plains was unfortunate because I was feeling really good on my Honda CBR1000RR and thought I could battle for a podium,” Josh Hook said. “Overall I was pretty happy with my performance in Tasmania and to end the weekend in the top five has given me a lot of confidence heading into the next round.” Round three of the Australian Superbike Championship will be held at Queensland Raceway from June 14 to 16.

RACER REWIND

TRADING POST CHALLENGE 2012 22

The 2012 V8 Supercar Championship weekend at the redeveloped Barbagallo Raceway in Perth, was a memorable one for Doric racers. Will Davison recorded two race wins in the west, as he continued his impressive start to last year’s season. What was more amazing is the two race victories came the day after Davison’s Ford Falcon suffered major suspension damage, after contact with Garth Tander’s race car forced him to finish at the back of the field. Davison praised the efforts of the FPR team to get his car repaired and so competitive for the final two races after a horror start to the weekend. FPR team mate Mark ‘Frosty’ Winterbottom also had a memorable weekend across the Nullarbor in 2012. Frosty won the opening race of the weekend and finished on the podium in the other two races. The impressive results helped Winterbottom move into third position in the Championship standings behind Davison. In the Australian Superbike Championship, Doric rider Jamie Stauffer had a tough weekend at Barbagallo Raceway and just missed out on a podium in the final race in Perth.

23

This weekend the V8 Supercars head west to Barbagallo Raceway in Perth for round four of the Championship. The tough and tight 2.42 kilometre circuit has proven to be a successful one for Doric racers, with Will Davison and Mark Winterbottom winning six out of the last 11 races on this track. Both drivers will be looking for another race win in Perth this weekend and could prove hard to beat, if they can continue to get good speed from their Ford Falcons. However the Pepsi Max Crew FPR team mates need to watch out for

24

Craig Lowndes, who has dominated the Perth track over the past decade. The multiple Bathurst winner has recorded 13 race victories at Barbagallo Raceway, which is nine more than any other current V8 Supercar driver. In the Touring Car Masters Series, Doric racer John Bowe will be the favourite this weekend in Perth after his dominant performance in the last round. Bowe is in some of the best form of his career and after his unbeaten start to the season, could prove unstoppable at Barbagallo Raceway.

Weekend Format- 60/60 Super Sprint on Saturday with a rolling start, two sprint races Sunday with a pair of qualifying sessions Seven turns, 2.411km long First race meeting was held in March 1969 The circuit hosted the 1979 Australian Grand Prix
