WILL DAVISON CELEBRATES ON THE STREETS OF TOWNSVILLE <<
Will Davison scored his first podium for the Erebus Mercedes Benz team in the last V8 Supercar Championship round in Townsville. The stellar result, coupled with a productive test day last week and new engine package upgrades, give Davison high hopes for more strong results this weekend at Ipswich. “I’ve been a part of a few teams, raced in different categories and seen a lot of motorsport all over the world, so I know it’s the little moments like we had at Townsville that are special.” I think we proved to everyone that we’re coming. We’re catching up fast and with new bits for the cars coming every day, we’re just getting better and better. Things don’t always go your way and you don’t always get the opportunity to show what you’re made of, so making the most of that chance up north was really important for me and everyone at Erebus. We just have to keep ticking those boxes and reaching our goals. It was a huge effort to take that podium; a perfect race. I hope the whole team is as proud as I am and I can’t wait to do it all over again!” Davison completed a test day with the team at Queensland Raceway just last week. He and enduro co-driver Alex Davison both had stints in the #9 Mercedes Benz. The test puts the team in an excellent starting position for the event this weekend.

IS 2014 THE SEASON FOR FROSTY? >>
Nothing can hold Mark Winterbottom back in 2014. The current points leader heads into the next round of the 2014 championship with a 96 point lead over reigning champion and fierce rival Jamie Whincup. Fighting back in a disappointing round at Townsville to score an impressive haul of points and now buoyed by a successful test day with the factory Ford team, Winterbottom has every reason to be confident about this weekend. With an impressive 10 podium places and finishing in the top 10 in 19 of the 22 races so far this year, Winterbottom is the man that 24 other drivers want to beat this weekend. But while Winterbottom’s race form has been nothing short of brilliant, FPR’s qualifying performances have left the team wanting. “We are struggling in qualifying,” Winterbottom told V8supercars.com.au. “I think aerodynamics plays a part in qualifying. In some circuits we have been deficient in a straight line. “We are not using the tyre enough either. Which is why we are very good on softs, because we can just drive all day on them.” But after a productive test day at Winton last week, the squad is confident it has unlocked its qualifying pace. “If you are at the front you are clear of all the action,” says Winterbottom. “It would make it a lot easier, driving in the pack is a lot of risk. “If we can qualify at the front then our championship looks really good.”

Chaz Mostert is heading into the eighth round of the 2014 V8 Supercar Championship with his eyes firmly the prize. The 22-year-old had a rough start to the year following his call up to the Ford factory team. But it seems he has now well and truly found his feet, not only at ease in the new squad, but making tracks at the front of the field. And Mostert wants to continue his streak of impressive performances, aiming to finish the season in the top five. At the last round in Townsville, Mostert had what he describes as the best drive of his career, holding off immense pressure from Craig Lowndes for 30 laps to claim fifth
in Race 21. And now he has every right to be confident heading into the Ipswich round, where last year he claimed his first V8 Supercars race win. “Now we go to Queensland Raceway where we had a win last year, and it’s the home crowd for me as well so it’s going to be fantastic,” Mostert told V8supercars.com.au “There’s still a long way to go, we have enduros and heaps of stuff to go, so you just never know where you’ll end up. But still, the main goal is to get into that top five. “If we can’t do that, staying in the top 10 is definitely where I want to be for my first full year in the Championship.”
12 >> Doric Racer >> QLD Raceway 2014 John Bowe is once again proving why he is the master of the touring car scene in Australia. The motor racing legend is leading the Touring Car Masters championship after three successful rounds in 2014. Bowe has won all three rounds so far, taking a swag of race wins along the way. In the last round at Darwin Bowe won two of the three races, extending his championship lead over rival Jim Richards. “I’ve had a really enjoyable season because I decided I wouldn’t be involved in the politics anymore,” said Bowe. “I decided letting the politics affect me was hurting my racing so I’ve made a conscious effort to stay away from it this year and I’m having really great time. “I’ve had a few wins and I’m leading the championship, so that side of it is going really well too. “Our next race is Eastern Creek with the V8s, which I’m really looking forward to.” “The level of competition has really come up this year. It makes for great racing. There are quite a few guys that are running at the front, giving it a good shake. “It’s tough racing out there and is a lot of fun.”

2012 brought much success for Doric Racers, in everything from Supercars to Superbikes. Will Davison was an early front runner in the title chase in the V8 Supercar Championship, finishing on all but one of the first 9 podiums. He finished with 17 podiums to his name that year, eight of them wins. But some inconsistent results through the middle of the year hurt his campaign, and saw him finish fourth in the championship. While he took just three wins over the course of the year, FPR Teammate Mark Winterbottom, crept through to third place in the championship with amazing consistency. John Bowe was back to fly the flag for Doric in the Touring Car Masters series. The reigning champion again stole the show, with 14 race wins over the course of the year in his 1969 Ford Mustang. He finished the year over 100 points clear of his closest rival. Doric continued to throw its support behind Team Motologic riders Jamie Stauffer and Wayne Maxwell in the 2012 Australian Superbike Championship. Maxwell went head to head with Josh Waters for the title, the pair sharing blow for blow on track throughout the season. In the end, Maxwell came up just 13.5 points short of the crown.

Now past the half-way point in the V8 Supercar championship, the title fight is really heating up. Staying north in Queensland for round eight on the calendar, the championship heads to Ipswich, the home of Queensland Raceway. Dubbed the ‘Paperclip’ for its unique design and lack of elevation, Queensland Raceway is the home test track for many V8 teams, including Will Davison’s Erebus Motorsport. While the circuit looks simple, it demands perfection and the tensions are high as the championship fight is pushed into overdrive. Queensland Raceway has proven fruitful for Doric racers in the past, with all three V8 drivers having wins on the board.
Will Davison, who holds the qualifying lap record at the circuit, has twice been on pole at the Ipswich track and has also scored one win; a tally he will be looking to build on this weekend off the back of a strong round in Townsville. Ford Performance Racing’s Mark Winterbottom has scored two wins at the circuit in the past, while Chaz Mostert scored his debut V8 win at Queensland Raceway just last year. Heading into the round, the top six in the Championship standings are separated by just 282 points. But with 11 different drivers have taken wins this year and three races on offer this weekend, the championship points table is set for yet another shake up.

Ipswich was an important round for Doric racers last year. Off the back of a win at Townsville Will Davison was desperate to keep his championship hopes alive with more strong drives at Queensland Raceway. Mark Winterbottom was also keen to continue an impressive streak of top five finishes which he’d started two rounds earlier in Darwin. But it was FPR’s fierce title rivals who returned to form at Ipswich after failing to score a single podium finish at Townsville. Jamie Whincup brought the first blow, taking the win from pole position for the first race. On-track contact between Whincup’s Triple Eight teammate Craig Lowndes and Winterbottom saw the Ford driver suffer with
lost positions. More drama on track saw a number of drivers topple down the scoresheet, including FPR Protégé Chaz Mostert, who was driving in his fifth event with Dick Johnson Racing. Winterbottom fought back to third place, behind V8 rookie Scott McLaughlin in second.. Whincup again took pole for the second race, but this time was beaten to the flag by McLaughlin, with Holden driver James Courtney coming in third. The final race was peppered with tyre problems for many drivers. But Chaz Mostert was not one of them, taking the win from second place on the grid. Pole-sitter Will Davison came in second ahead of Winterbottom.
