2013: Most competitive season on record? With the introduction of the all-new COTF platform at the start of the V8 Supercar season, 2013 is shaping up to be the most competitive in the history of the category. After 31 races, 13 of the 28 regular drivers have picked up race victories, with nine of the 18 teams making their way to victory lane. Throw in five first-time winners (two being rookies), four different co-drivers winning the four enduros, and the fact that over the Gold Coast weekend the podium completely changed for both races, it has been a heck of a season! In 2012 only four drivers from two teams won all of the races.
It’s a new race record! Despite the new for 2013 V8 Supercar COTF tending to be slightly slower than the previous model car around the Mount Panorama circuit, Winterbottom and Richard’s victorious Bathurst race time of 6hrs 11mins 27sec was a new record for the 1000km race. The time eclipsed the 2010 mark set by Craig Lowndes/Mark Skaife by 1min 24sec, which bettered the previous quick race from 1991, when Jim Richards and Mark Skaife in a Nissan GT-R completed the race in 6hr 19min 14sec.This was the last race not to feature safety car intervention, which was first pressed into service at Bathurst in 1987. That 1991 race record in turn bettered the1984 mark set by Peter Brock and Larry Perkins by 4mins, with that particular race being the last for the Big Banger Group C cars on the Mountain.
Cop that Schumacher! John Bowe’s pole position at the recent Eastern Creek TCM round was the 80th of his illustrious career, equalling Michael Schumacher at 11th on the all-time pole winners list for all forms of motorsport. Topping the leader board is NASCAR legend Richard Petty, who has 123 poles to back up his 200 race victories, followed by fellow NASCAR ace David Pearson on 117, and sports car star Jeroen Bleekemolen (108), who raced in the V8 Supercar endurance races with Tekno Autosports. Other Australasian drivers on the list include21. Jim Richards- 66 poles =37. Peter Brock- 55 =39. Geoff Brabham- 54 =42. Jamie Whincup- 52 =67. Will Power- 46 =80. Craig Baird- 43

Will Davison is keeping his eyes on the V8 Supercar Championship prize, with the Phillip Island round crucial to his title chances. Following the endurance race portion of the season, Davison sits only 121 points off the Championship lead with four races remaining. Teamed with Steve Owen on the Gold Coast, the duo registered a pair of top-ten results, one of the only outfits to achieve the feat. “Well we are hanging in there in this championship chase. We missed an opportunity on the Gold Coast, but the strategy just didn’t work out for us,” said Davison.
“It was absolutely nuts out there in the chicanes, I’m glad to just get the car home! It was a big effort by everyone at FPR this weekend to build such a strong Ford Falcon. “I can’t thank Stevie Owen enough for his performance over the past three races. My head’s down now and this championship battle is on.” Davison’s season has been a picture of consistency, with only two finishes outside of the top-ten all year long. Two race victories in New Zealand and Townsville however were offset by a pair of failures to finish in the championship’s first visit to the USA in May.

Following the highest of highs at Bathurst, the final race of the 2013 Enduro Cup at the Gold Coast proved to be frustrating for Mark Winterbottom. Once again teamed with Steven Richards, the highlight of the weekend for the duo was a third place finish in the opening race of the weekend. Unfortunately the weekend unravelled during the Sunday race, when the ever present ripple strips took their toll on the car’s suspension, relegating the outfit to 18th at the chequered flag. Despite the setback, Winterbottom still remains a strong chance of capturing his maiden V8 Supercar Championship, trailing current points leader Craig Lowndes by 88 points with a total of 600 still up for grabs.
“What a weekend! Our usual dominance at Gold Coast did not translate in to the car of the future, we have some work to do on solving our issues, all in all we managed a third place and an 18th place after damage from the kerbs,” said Winterbottom. “We closed the championship gap slightly. It is well and truly alive.” So far in season 2013, Winterbottom has won three races, the big one at Bathurst, Winton and Hidden Valley, with eight further podium finishes to his credit. In recent times Winterbottom has been the bull in the points chase, clawing back a large haul of points following a DNF in the season opener at Adelaide, and a difficult four races at Pukekohe.

SALLY SET FOR TITLE SHOWDOWN John Bowe rounds out the trio of Doric Racers who are shooting for a title this weekend, with the Touring Car Masters season to come to a conclusion at Phillip Island. After sitting out the Sandown round, Bowe comes into the season finale trailing long-time rival Jim Richards by only 56 points with 180 still up for grabs, with the two Ford drivers set to take the battle right to the last lap. The most recent round supporting the Bathurst 1000 proved to be a frustrating affair for the historic touring fraternity. A crash on the opening lap of the first race saw the heat cut short, with the second race receiving a similar fate after a high speed accident on Conrod Straight between Andrew Miedecke and Glenn Seton. Victory in the final full points race however was enough for Bowe to claim the overall round win, his fifth success from the seven rounds to date. “It was great to finally get a race under our belt!” Said Bowe. “It’s such a great circuit, and I was having withdrawal symptoms from not getting many racing laps in. “I’m not quite sure how I won the round, but it was good to race with Jimmy (Richards) and Brett Youlden, who had his best drive to date.” Bowe has continued to be busy in recent times outside of ‘Mustang Sally’, claiming a third place finish aboard the Marenello Motorsport Ferrari 458 at the Australian GT finale recently at New Zealand’s Highlands Park.

For Team Honda Racing, the 2013 Australian Superbike Championship was filled with ups and downs, with Jamie Stauffer finishing the year in fourth overall, while rookie teammate Josh Hook placed fifth. Early season injury issues for Stauffer put the veteran behind the eight ball, although he bounced back strongly late in the year to be victorious at Hidden Valley. A highlight for Hook was his podium in the non-points MotoGP support race in October. “It was great to have the opportunity to race at Phillip Island again with such a huge crowd and the atmosphere was just amazing,” said Hook. “I couldn’t be happier to finish the MotoGP event with a third overall in Superbikes and I would like to thank the team for their efforts as they always put in 100%. “It was terrific to see so many people there to support the domestic teams and riders and particularly our sponsors who made the journey to the Island to encourage us. A big thank you to Honda Australia also for the fantastic support they provide throughout the season.” Stauffer however struggled with tyre grip issues at the season finale. “I enjoyed the MotoGP event very much although I’m a bit disappointed with not finishing on the podium,” said Stauffer. “My pace was good over the weekend, but sometimes it just doesn’t happen. I struggled with front end grip a bit early on and we did get on top of that, but the stars just didn’t align for me this weekend to finish on the podium. “Still, there were some great battles on track and it was a terrific event. I would like to thank the team for all their hard work and the sponsors for all their support throughout the year.” /Team-Honda-Racing

RACER REWIND
PHILLIP ISLAND 2012
22
The 2012 Phillip Island round saw Doric ambassador Will Davison go from the lowest of lows, to an incredible high, all within the space of 24 hours. In a pattern that was unfortunately repeated early in the season for the FPR driver, Davison was involved in an incident in the Saturday race, before bouncing back for victory on Sunday. Davison’s Saturday issue started with a spirited battle at the front of the pack, which resulted in the Falcon driver being forced off the track, and into eventual heavy contact with title rival Jamie Whincup. “I had a tight battle with Frosty and then on the restart I was shoved off by (Shane) van Gisbergen and it was all on from there, apparently,” said Davison. “He hit me at least four times which is really disappointing. Later in the lap I was moved wide by (Tim) Slade on a high speed part of the track which surprised me. There needs to be room left at those speeds. The impact broke the steering and after that I was a passenger in a ride which ended in a very nasty smash.” In fading light on Sunday, Davison stayed on track and claimed his sixth win from the first 11 races of the season. “Great day... we needed it after the disappointment yesterday,” said Davison. “The FPR boys gave me a great car and I just concentrated on staying out of trouble. It’s very satisfying and demonstrates we can bounce back when things went wrong.”

D N A L S I P I W L E L I I PH 0 PREV 36 The V8 Supercar Championship is somewhat diving into the unknown this weekend at the Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit, with the track receiving a full repave since the class last visited the venue. So far in 2013, every class that has visited the track has managed to lower lap records, however the improved grip the surface offers came at a price at the recent MotoGP meet, where the category’s control tyres shredded. To ensure no repeat performance for V8 Supercars, Dunlop recently held a private tyre test at the venue, with setup data being fed back to the teams. The long sweeping curves of the venue have always added extra strain on tyres, however with the new 18 inch Dunlops passing the long distance test at Bathurst with flying colours, it is hoped that the shorter races at Phillip Island should work in their favour. It will also be the first meet at the Island for the COTF platform, with the layout providing a freer flowing layout than many of the circuits visited to date this year.
