2013 SEASON REVIEW Round 1 Adelaide Will Davison started the season on a strong note, finishing the opening leg of the Clipsal 500 with a second place finish. A sluggish pit stop cost Davison ground on Sunday, but a late race safety car allowed him to catch back up to the pack and be classified sixth. New car teething problems for Mark Winterbottom saw him record a DNF in the opening leg with transmission issues after starting from the front row. Like Davison, the Sunday race saw Winterbottom delayed in the pits, before rebounding to finish in fifth. Will Davison – 3rd, 240 points Mark Winterbottom – 15th, 111 points
Non-Championship Albert Park The Australian Grand Prix support races proved to be an extended test session, with the teams still coming to grips with the new-specification cars. Davison finished the weekend third on the podium, despite slipping down the leader board during the four races, with results of third, fourth, fifth and eighth. A series of issues over the event struck down Winterbottom, who recorded a best result for the weekend in race three, finishing seventh. Will Davison – 3rd, 240 points Mark Winterbottom – 15th, 111 points
WILL READY Round 2 Symmons Plains When the Championship hit Tasmania for the first 60/60 super sprint event of the season, Davison was in points collection mode. Results of sixth, fifth and sixth for the weekend saw the Doric ambassador leave the weekend second in the point standings. Winterbottom however was a man on a mission, with a third and a second place result coupled with a pole position for the final race, vaulting him nine places up the Championship point score. Will Davison – 2nd, 450 points Mark Winterbottom – 6th, 357 points
Round 3 Pukekohe A return to the freshly renovated Pukekohe circuit outside of Auckland saw Davison return to the winner’s circle, with victory in the Sunday morning race. Other weekend results of seventh, second and fifth saw him jump into the Championship lead after nine races. On the other side of the Pepsi Max Crew FPR pit bunker, Winterbottom had pace but no luck. A coming together with Jamie Whincup at the conclusion of the opening race was followed by punctures in two further races. Weekend results of 19th, 13th, 23rd and 24th dropped Winterbottom five spots in the standings.

Doric ambassador Will Davison was a man on a mission at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, with the Pepsi Max Crew FPR driver finding the sweet spot of the number six Ford Falcon after Sunday qualifying. Following a difficult opening race where Davison was spun out by Shane Van Gisbergen, a pair of tough Sunday morning qualifying sessions set the final two encounters up as a battle through the field. Results of eighth and sixth still give Davison a mathematical chance of snatching the title at Homebush if disasters strike down the leading trio. “I had two good races today and I enjoyed them but the damage was done in qualifying. We only got on the right track with setup after qualifying and we should’ve perhaps changed direction earlier but we persevered with things through Friday and Saturday when we were nowhere,” said Davison. “We went from 13th to eighth and 10th to sixth and while I enjoyed the races it was a pretty disastrous weekend for my championship. “I head to Homebush which is a track I love with a mathematical chance of the title. I think we will see more fireworks between the front guys. Hopefully I can just be out in front and you never know what is going to happen.”

Mark Winterbottom remains in the thick of the V8 Supercar title hunt, although ultimate race results eluded the 2013 Bathurst champ at Phillip Island. A pair of pole positions for the three races were converted into results of fifth, seventh and second. “Coming here I was quite nervous given the new track surface and I was comparing it to Texas where we struggled a bit,” said Winterbottom. “But when you qualify on pole twice and third I thought we would’ve come away with more points than we did. We have a quick car and if we use that to get good track position at Homebush we can keep clear of the trouble behind. “There was a lot of contact out there so thankfully the car finished okay and we came away from the weekend with some good points. I am going to have a big crack at Homebush and just go hard. At 124 points back it will be the least amount of pressure I’ve ever had heading into the title decider so we will see what comes out of it.”
Round 4 Barbagallo Raceway A puncture at the beginning of the opening race of the Perth weekend set the scene for Davison, who managed to fight back in the two Sunday races. Results of 14th, fifth and fourth provided an encouraging points haul from a tough weekend. Winterbottom however bounced back to form, with a pair of third place results in the opening two races, before a tardy pit stop in the final race resulted in a 12th place finish. Will Davison – 2nd, 893 points Mark Winterbottom – 9th, 666 points

Round 5 Texas V8 Supercar’s USA debut proved to be a frustrating affair for the Doric Racers. Following a fourth place result in the opening race, Davison rounded out the weekend with a ninth, a 12th and a DNF following contact with Scott McLaughlin. Winterbottom on the other hand experienced steady improvement over the course of the four races, with results of eighth, sixth, seventh and fifth. Carrying significant engine and weight penalties into the final round of the Touring Car Masters season, John Bowe was praying for rain to fall on the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. With the heavens opening during qualifying, Bowe snared the pole position by a massive 2.9 second margin. However, with conditions clearing for the three races, results of only seventh, third and fifth were achievable. Bowe finishes the season having won five of the eight rounds. “It was always going to be an uphill battle this weekend with the weight and the revs, but I really enjoyed some good racing,” said Bowe. “The season has been satisfying, I love driving these old style cars which have too much horsepower and not enough grip. We’ve picked up some good results along the way, which is pleasing.”
Round 6 Darwin Davison’s Hidden Valley weekend got off to an inauspicious start when a pile up at the start of the second leg of the 60/60 Saturday race eliminated the Doric Racer. A strong rebound on Sunday saw Davison finish in fourth and seventh places. Likewise, Winterbottom had a tough start to proceedings with a 22nd place finish in race one, following a pit lane penalty after coming into contact with team mate David Reynolds. Sunday however saw Winterbottom take his first race victory of the season, which was backed up with second place in the finale. Will Davison – 3rd, 1148 points Mark Winterbottom – 7th, 1079 points

Round 7 Townsville FPR’s strong mid-season form continued on the streets of Townsville, with Davison claiming the opening race victory. However, a change of car setup for Sunday resulted in a tenth place finish. For Winterbottom, second place on Saturday sealed a rare one-two result for the team, which was backed up with a fourth on Sunday, elevating the Falcon driver three places in the point standings. Will Davison – 3rd, 1376 points Mark Winterbottom – 4th, 1337 points

For Team Honda Racing, the 2013 Australian Superbike Championship was filled with ups and downs, with Jamie Stauffer finishing the year in fourth overall, while rookie teammate Josh Hook placed fifth. Early season injury issues for Stauffer put the veteran behind the eight ball, although he bounced back strongly late in the year to be victorious at Hidden Valley. A highlight for Hook was his podium in the non-points MotoGP support race in October. “It was great to have the opportunity to race at Phillip Island again with such a huge crowd and the atmosphere was just amazing,” said Hook. “I couldn’t be happier to finish the MotoGP event with a third overall in Superbikes and I would like to thank the team for their efforts as they always put in 100%. “It was terrific to see so many people there to support the domestic teams and riders and particularly our sponsors who made the journey to the Island to encourage us. A big thank you to Honda Australia also for the fantastic support they provide throughout the season.” Stauffer however struggled with tyre grip issues at the season finale. “I enjoyed the MotoGP event very much although I’m a bit disappointed with not finishing on the podium,” said Stauffer. “My pace was good over the weekend, but sometimes it just doesn’t happen. I struggled with front end grip a bit early on and we did get on top of that, but the stars just didn’t align for me this weekend to finish on the podium. “Still, there were some great battles on track and it was a terrific event. I would like to thank the team for all their hard work and the sponsors for all their support throughout the year.”
Round 8 Ipswich After finishing in sixth and ninth in the opening two races at Queensland Raceway, Davison found form for the final outing. Pole position was backed up with a second place result to rookie race winner Chaz Mostert. Winterbottom’s weekend was bookended by third place results, after a tough qualifying session for the second race gave a 14th place grid spot, which was converted into tenth at the chequered flag. Round 9 Winton In the final super sprint round prior to the season of endurance, Davison had a consistent weekend with results of sixth, seventh and sixth. However, with other leading drivers struggling on the tight and slippery layout, Davison was elevated to second in the point standings. Winterbottom also benefitted from the weekend results falling in his favour, with the Doric Racer elevated to third on the overall leader board. A fourth place in the 60/60 race was bettered with a strong victory in the Sunday morning heat. The fickle nature of the sport was on display in the last race, with a 19th starting position only improved to 17th at the chequered flag. Round 10 Sandown Davison showed that he was a force to be dealt with in the endurance races, with a third place finish when teamed with Steve Owen at the Sandown 500. After scoring pole position and resetting the lap record in the qualifying races, the pair were delayed in the pits early, before coming back through the field. Transmission issues in the closing stages added to the stress in the pits, however Davison was able to nurse the car to the finish while fending off Lee Holdsworth. A sluggish getaway for Winterbottom’s team mate Steven Richards forced a change of strategy, with the outfit pitting early. A sticking wheel nut late in the event forced another comeback drive through the field, which resulted in a sixth place finish.

Round 11 Bathurst Doric Racers win the Bathurst 1000! Winterbottom and Richards teamed to fend off an incredible late race challenge from Jamie Whincup to claim the first Bathurst crown for FPR and Doric. The duo were pacesetters throughout the event, with a flawless strategy seeing the duo come out in front after a clean green flag run through the final stints. The race also entered the record books for being the quickest ever. Davison and Owen meanwhile struggled for race pace, after being on the money in the lead up to the main event. Seventh place the chequered flag limited the points damage from the race. Will Davison – 4th, 2242 points Mark Winterbottom – 3rd, 2281 points

Round 13 Phillip Island After being spun out of the opening 60/60 race, Davison faced an uphill battle at Phillip Island. A tough pair of Sunday morning qualifying sessions followed, but Davison raced strongly in the twin 100km long races to finish in eighth and sixth respectively. Despite scoring two of the three pole positions for the weekend, Winterbottom could only convert his strong starting spots into a single podium finish. A controversial last corner coming together while going for the lead at the end of leg one of the opening race forced an eventual fifth place finish, which was backed up with a seventh and a second in the remaining races. Round 12 Gold Coast The final endurance event of the season on the Gold Coast once again saw Davison and Owen show consistency on the results sheets, picking up solid points on a weekend where most title front runners suffered setbacks. The two legs on the streets of Surfers Paradise netted the pair sixth and ninth place results. Will Davison – 4th, 2428 points Mark Winterbottom –3rd, 2461 points

The 2012 edition of the Sydney 500 proved to be a case of deja vu for Will Davison, with a tough Saturday race. However, unlike the 2011 running of the gruelling event, Davison bounced back brilliantly to win the final race of the season on Sunday. After starting second for the opening leg, Davison was running cautiously when his Ford Falcon snapped a steering arm, resulting in a 19th place finish. Once again qualifying on the front row on Sunday, Davison kicked free of the field to claim victory. “Today was not easy, so it was fantastic to win the final race of the season and to end the year on a high,” said Davison at the time. “To win at Homebush is special for me because I have come so close in the past. It was a great race and for once it was entirely straight forward so I managed to do everything I needed to. I am looking forward to a break and coming back even faster next year.”

Since 2009 the Homebush Street Circuit at Sydney Olympic Park has proven to be one of the toughest stops on the V8 Supercar calendar. The concrete canyon in its short life has proven to be a challenging location for the title decider. A highlight to date was the final round of 2010, where James Courtney and Jamie Whincup duelled in the pits, with the pit crews furiously repairing damage following a pile up caused by a torrential downpour. The wide pit straight funnels into a tight ninety degree left-hand opening corner, while the back section of the track is narrow, and features two tight chicanes split by a fast sweeper. A fast corner leads onto Dawn Fraser Avenue and past the Olympic stadium, before a left-right-right-left-left sequence returns cars around the train station and past the pits. Apart from the ever present concrete walls, tyre bundles and large ripple strips pose a major danger.
