Edit or’s Letter

How organised are you? Do you ever wish that you could wave a magic wand and all your organising problems would disappear? Piles of paperwork, all the books/ toys/CDs/clothes/_____(fill in your own blank), or office admin problems would become a thing of the past. My desk would be clear, and there would be no backlog of financial tasks waiting to be completed. The loft would be empty, and people might actually be able to sleep in the spare room! Sammy Ryan our interviewee is probably the nearest thing to a magic wand you will find – her business is to help people get organised, whether home, office or life. Sammy is brave enough to have organised a conference for 200 other organisers, and is practiced at digging people out of the holes they find themselves in. You can read all about her on pages 6/7. There’s also a piece from her about being organised should the worst happen – we all know we should have a will, but have you thought about bank accounts, pensions, life insurances - would your nearest and dearest be able to manage your affairs should something happen to you? Food for thought. See the article on page 17 for things you should consider. Hope you enjoy the magazine this month,

Sammy Ryan Sammy Ryan runs a professional organising company, Strictly Organised. She lives in Lockeridge near Marlborough. Tell us about yourself I grew up in Wales and London. and moved with my family to this area when I was 15. I stayed to do my A levels, then went off to London. By the time I was 20 I was living in New York, then Philadelphia. I had an amazing time, but after a while work brought me back to the UK. I spent several years in London, firstly working in personnel for one of the big advertising agencies, and after that I worked for a model agency as a booker. I oversaw the extras division – supplying actors mostly for commercials, TV and films. By 1992, I’d had enough of living in a big city and returned to Wiltshire, one of the main reasons being that I had the opportunity to ride to a fairly high standard, which was just not possible in London. I set up my own IT business working for small businesses and teaching people at home. I’d picked up skills in databases, networks and could even build a computer. IT support was in its infancy in those days, so I was in a good position. After that I got a bit side-tracked and helped a friend set up a business providing vocational training and apprenticeships to the equine industry. I helped build it up to an award winning, Ofsted Grade 1 ‘Outstanding’ training provider. After a while though I realised that I wanted to work for myself again, so started look for a new challenge. How did Strictly Organised happen? I went to a Triathlon Training camp in France, where I met Kirsty Newland. We hit it off in the evenings over wine and biscuits(!). She, like me, was looking to find something new, so we decided it might make sense to do something together. Researching ideas, I came across the concept of Professional Organising and to cut a long story short Strictly Organised was born. After several years, Kirsty decided to take a different direction, but I continued with the business as we had established a client base, and I could see that the business was developing well. So, what is Professional Organising? It’s helping people organise areas where they feel overwhelmed, unconfident or in some cases

6

There is such a wide variety of work and people, every day is different, which I love. ashamed of different areas of their lives – be that in their home, their office or their life. It can involve de-cluttering but involves so much more as I can be sorting paperwork and technology out one day and helping someone move house another; and can include liaising with other professionals such as accountants and solicitors on my clients’ behalf. What about it appealed to you? I was drawn to it as I could see how it fit with my skill base, using technology and streamlining processes. However, the most important thing was working with people – providing support and solutions in a practical and empathetic way whilst they were facing some life changing events. Who is your typical client? I’m not sure there is such a thing as a typical client, but they tend to fall into one of three groups. Firstly, people who may be experiencing a change of circumstances. Whether that be because of death, illness, moving house, new family or new career. Often, a partner has died, and the remaining spouse lacks confidence and knowledge and needs help with areas that their partner dealt with such as the family finances. I can help with as little or as much as they need, and often draw on my own local connections to help them with the right support moving forwards.

People These can be very rewarding clients to work for, as it often involves the entire family – it is good to see what a genuine difference the help I offer can make. Secondly, I work for families, typically with young children. Often, they have their own businesses, and just haven’t got enough hours in the day. Maybe the house has got too much to deal with and they just need help knowing where to start and how to approach the problem. It doesn’t have to be too costly for them – often I will go in for a morning to work through the issues with them and work out a plan of action. Fresh eyes and a little expertise can make a big difference. Thirdly, what I would call Solopreneurs, people trying to do everything in their business, who just need a bit of extra help. I might help them streamline their processes – introducing online accounting systems and showing how cloud technology can help them. There is such a wide variety of work and people, every day is different, which I love. You’re on the board of the professional body for Professional Organisers Yes – APDO, The Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers. It has grown massively over the past few years as people have recognised the value of what we do, and the benefit of belonging to a professional body with a code of ethics and standards. I recently organised the annual conference which saw 200 attendees, and speakers from the UK and abroad. (Quite pressured organising a conference for organisers!) What do you enjoy most about your business? I love solving people’s

problems, walking in and making a difference. I like that clients can put their trust in me, knowing that I won’t be judgmental about anything. Sometimes I can almost see the weight lifting off someone’s shoulders. Anything you find difficult? People tend to have pre-conceived notions about what a professional organiser does, based on TV programmes that often give a simplistic and narrow impression – it’s not just sorting out your cupboards! I think this perception is changing as more and more people use the services of a professional and talk to their friends about it. Do you practice what you preach? On the whole! I wouldn’t be any good at my job if I hadn’t been through my own organising journey! When I am busy my office space can take second priority to other tasks. I do have regular sessions to deal with my own clutter, as I find I need to be organised myself to be able to organise others. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I have a dog called Stanley, he is a Lancashire Heeler (a rare breed descended from Welsh Corgis and Manchester Terriers). Originally bred to herd cattle, they have a lovely temperament. My sister used to have one, and when I decided to get a dog, I got Stanley from Lancashire Heeler rescue. He likes a lot of attention, and I take him to dog training every week, which we both enjoy. He has a Gold Good Citizen Award from The Kennel Club – although he doesn’t always behave like it! He comes to visit clients with me sometimes, they love him.

to the Tedworth Pony Club, which is great fun and very rewarding. I enjoy travelling around the country and to America to visit friends. I holiday every year down in Cornwall with a bunch of my London friends – we’ve been holidaying together for about 25 years. I also love to cook – some of my friends are professional chefs, so I’ve picked things up from them. I batch cook every weekend, so when I come home stressed from a day’s work, I have something tasty and healthy to eat. Otherwise I would probably live on takeaways! I’ve recently joined the Marlborough Food Assembly, where you can buy fresh produce direct from the producer online, then go and pick it up at a regular time each week. It’s in its infancy, but I’m sure it will develop. Do you enjoy eating out? I like going out with friends to the local pubs. The Who’d A Thought It has been refurbished recently and is definitely worth a visit. What are you reading at the moment? For professional purposes I am reading “New Order – a decluttering handbook for creative folks”. To relax in the evening before bed I am enjoying the Adventures of Rolo books by local author Debi Evans. Although they are technically written for children, there’s plenty in them for adults to enjoy! I also enjoy crime novels, as long as they are not too gory! Will you open your Garden this Summer? Do you have an interesting or attractive garden? Julia’s House, the Dorset and Wiltshire children’s hospice charity is appealing for people to open their gardens this spring/ summer to help raise funds for essential care for Julia’s House families. Now is the perfect time to start planting and preparing. Inviting friends and family to a special ‘open garden’ event can be a really rewarding way for gardeners to enjoy their hard work, beautiful plants and landscapes while sharing it with others too. Asking for entry donations, selling plants, cuttings, grown vegetables, cakes or holding raffles are just some ways funds can be raised from holding an Open Garden event. Community fundraiser, Sarah Agnew, says “Gardens can be any size or style, from cottage garden to urban retreat. Unusual designs, quirky features or interesting planting are always very popular. But it’s your event and your garden and you can make it your own. We’d just like to plant the seed in your mind to consider if you’d be willing to get involved. Even a small amount of funds raised can make a huge difference to our care.” If you are keen to open your garden for Julia’s House or would like more information contact community fundraiser Alicia on 01202 644220 or email: community@juliashouse.org

St Mary’s at Stonebridge In late March, Action for the River Kennet ran a river studies morning for fifty-four Marlborough St Mary’s student at Stonebridge Wild River Reserve. During the river studies session they

10

taught the children how to test for nitrate and phosphate in the wetland and the river, teachers helped them carry out measuring flow rates and the most popular activity was getting into waders to carry out kick sampling to catch freshwater invertebrates and then learn how to identify them. ARK combined the event with thanking Drove vets, who kindly sponsored a new bin at the reserve. ARK are really keen for dog owners and walkers to bag it and bin it and strongly support the town wide campaign being run by Marlborough Town Council and Droves. As well as having a legal responsibility to clear up after their dog/s ARK wants all dog owners/walkers to realise the potential consequences for other dogs and particularly children who come into contact with dog poo. Drove have put together an excellent flyer with information on the subject, which ARK will be handing out.

Farewell to our Mayor Emergency Planning

At our Mayor Making ceremony on 14 May, Cllr Mervyn Hall passes his mayoral role and chairmanship of the Town Council onto his successor. The last year has been an incredibly busy one and your Mayor has attended more than 110 civic events in the town and further afield where he has represented Marlborough admirably. He has headed up a new council which has achieved a great deal including the taking on and refurbishment of the public toilets and the Community & Youth Centre as well as being Chairman of the Steering Group producing the Marlborough Area Neighbourhood Plan. He represents the Town Council at an official level where he regularly puts forward a clear, rational argument on Marlborough’s behalf. He has also worked hard for his chosen charities, Julia’s House and Home Start Kennet alongside supporting various local community and voluntary organisations and building on our close links with the 4th Military Intelligence Battalion. Our thanks go to him and his supportive Mayoress and wife, Cath. A job very well done.

The Town Council is currently working on a review of its Emergency Plan which covers flooding, snow, loss of utilities, pandemic flu, animal health, etc. Whilst the Emergency Services do an excellent job (as we all witnessed during extreme weather conditions), it’s clear that we need to be ready at a local level to deal with some things. Perhaps you would be happy to put your name down on a list of community volunteers in your neighbourhood or have a 4x4 vehicle so could help out in snowy conditions or can bring some expertise to our Working Party. If you are interested in helping your community with this, please contact the Town Council offices.

Town Council Grant Scheme

The 2018/19 Grant Scheme is now open. In the last year, grants have been awarded to Alzheimer’s Support, Macmillan Marlborough, Marlborough St Mary’s CE VC Primary School, Greatwood

Great British Spring Clean

The snow put off our first litter picking weekend, but the Town Council, Marlborough in Bloom and volunteers were able to join forces on 16th and 17th March to help clear up round the town. Main areas covered were Salisbury Road, the Recreation Ground and the Barton Park area. Many thanks to those who turned out to help.

A bit of crafty relaxation.. I recently stumbled across a new TV show on BBC 4, MAKE! Craft Britain, which was right up my street as it was based on all things crafty. One of the key revelations for me was that, whereas my attempts at yoga and mindfulness took me some way to being relaxed, my ultimate therapy from the intense day job of family Law is to craft. The problem that I have is that I want to try all of the crafts. This ultimately means that, around my house, there are many new or partially started craft projects. My “knit your own giant wall mounted stag’s head” remains incomplete as I got stuck on the stitches needed for the nose, so my attention waned, and I put it away. It will look fabulous on the wall when it’s finally finished! I watched rag cushion making on the TV show and immediately rushed to buy myself a kit. I need multiple strips of fabric, so I now need to raid wardrobes for unused tee shirts in the hope that I can find one of every shade of the rainbow without my family noticing that they have gone missing. That mission may take some time so the kit sits, gathering dust, behind the sofa for now. I also want to give silver clay jewellery and stained glass a go, as well as to be able to perfect making a pot on a potter’s wheel. I tried this years ago when I was a trainee solicitor, at evening classes, but never quite got the hang of the whole centring the clay lark and often ended the session with a face covered in clay. What I absolutely loved however was that the glazes never resembled the substances painted onto the pre-fired pots and the element of surprise was so exciting each week to see if our primitive pots had survived the kiln, free of rogue air bubbles, and if so, how beautiful the glazes were. Raku firing was particularly amazing as the process is more primitive and the metallic hues on the pots were outstanding. I love to give my creative efforts away, very rarely keeping them for myself, although my poor parents probably hoped that the gifts

14

of clay thumb pots would stop at primary age rather than into my twenties, thirties and forties. You never know, when I become the “Van Gogh” equivalent of crafts, my parents will be able to flog their “early Kellows” for millions and jet off for retirement in the Bahamas. One can always dream. My mother in law loves creative writing. She is often one of the first critics of my “Marlborough Town and Country” musings. She recently won a prize for one of her own poems, so her feedback is always welcome. She recently set me the challenge to write some “flash fiction”. Not sure what this was, she told me that it could be whatever I wanted. So, up for the challenge and, presented with a picture of a boy diving from a rock, I wrote two pieces. The first a rather dark and uncharacteristic piece and the second, a more sentimental short poem reflecting family memories on the beautiful island of Herm. I nervously await her critique now. Interestingly, the creative writing juices flowed whilst I was baking. Keeping occupied and chilled whilst my scones browned off nicely. The Big Painting Challenge has now started on early Sunday evenings on BBC 1. I am, of course, a devotee and fancy giving it a go. How hard can it be after all? I just need to get myself some paints, brushes, canvases and an easel and off we go....! Fiona Kellow Fiona Kellow is a working mum of two. When she isn’t running around after her family she is a Partner at Thrings Solicitors, specialising in family law.

Putting your affairs in order – an act of true love? It is never the easiest of topics to consider but if you die without organising your affairs, the impact on your family can be both stressful and potentially heart-breaking. How do you avoid this? The answer is simple – the ‘death’ file. Not the most elegant of names but in our ever more complicated lives is something I am increasingly helping people with. So, where to start? WILLS - Do your will and and keep it up to date. No will? Your estate is governed by intestate rules which means it could go to an unintended beneficiary leaving your nearest and dearest with no money, unable to manage your affairs, and the loss of joint assets. An out of date will might result in similar outcomes. FINANCIAL ACCOUNTS - Have clear instructions on how your finances work. What accounts you have and how your income and expenditure is managed. Set up a joint bank account to pay important bills, so basic living arrangements continue as normal. All your sole accounts will be frozen and, apart from funeral and estate expenses, funds may not become available until after probate has been granted.

Joint accounts automatically are moved into the other person’s name. DOCUMENTS, AFFAIRS AND PASSWORDS - Make it easy to find your important papers. Create one document which signposts where to find birth certificate, NI number, tax reference numbers etc. List key information and contacts such as memberships, subscriptions, mobile phone contracts, dentist and opticians. This makes it easier to know who to inform. Make sure someone can access your passwords. LastPass is an example of an online vault service where you could store all your information under one master password. COMMUNICATION - Make sure your accountant, solicitor, executors and lasting power of attorney (LPAs) know how to contact each other. Even better arrange a meeting to discuss your wishes. Tell your family what you have put in place. None of us know when our time is up but by organising your ‘death’ file you can show those you cherish how much you care. Sammy Ryan, Strictly Organised

Finance

Four key questions to ask when choosing a financial adviser Having been involved in financial services for close on 30 years I have come across some very good and some very poor examples of financial advice and I thought that it would be a good idea to set out for you just four key questions to ask of firms when you are looking for a financial adviser 1) Are you and your firm regulated to provide the advice I need? All firms representing themselves as providers of financial advice must be regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). This is something that is relatively easy to check by running a search for them on the FCA register at the website register.fca.org.uk. I am afraid however that just checking that they are on the register is not sufficient as you need to check that the permissions the firm has are appropriate to your needs; for example, a firm that just has consumer credit and mortgage permissions will not be able to advise on pensions and investments. Beware of seeking help from unregulated firms as you will not have the protection of the Financial Ombudsman Service or the Financial Services Compensation Scheme if things go wrong. 2) Are you an Independent or Restricted adviser? Independent advisers have access to the whole of the marketplace; they must give due consideration to all available options and provide advice on all aspects of investment advice. On the other hand, Restricted advisers will be limited in the advice they can provide, either by the aspects they can advise on or by the range of providers products that are available to them. The regulators require that advisers are either one or the other, there is no part Restricted, part Independent. Whilst all advisers have a responsibility to only advise on products that are suitable to ones needs, the ability to source the most suitable financial solutions from across all providers means that you are likely to get better value from Independent advice than the one-size-fits-all solution that many Restricted firms will offer. 3) Are you suitably qualified and experienced? Do ask what the experience and qualifications of the adviser are, do not just assume.

24

All regulated advisers are subject to minimum qualification levels and for straightforward mortgage, pension or investment advice, the minimum qualification may well be suitable. For more complex advice such as tax planning and trust work, complex pensions or more detailed investment work, then using a Chartered Financial Planner may be more suitable. Looking for firms with more than one adviser and with a range of in-house specialists to call on when required may be a good strategy to employ. 4) Will you agree fixed fees or are the advice charges contingent on a sale? Sound financial planning is often about ensuring that existing arrangements remain suitable but advisory firms that only charge a percentage fee on the sale of a product will need to sell you something to earn; no sale-no fee is certainly not the way to go when it comes to financial advice. Fixed fees can be relatively affordable and it pays to shop around. Make sure that you get quotations in ÂŁvalue rather than in percentage terms as it will be easier to compare charges and do not be embarrassed to ask for more clarity over potential charges if you do not understand. Road Test

Fiat Tipo Virtually every car that is released at the moment seems to be some sort of crossover or SUV, whether it’s a compact lifestyle vehicle or a gargantuan luxury off-roader. Although the car buying public can’t seem to get enough of them, I’m not a big fan. So, when I noticed that Fiat are heavily promoting their Tipo family hatchback, it made a refreshing change and I headed over to my local Fiat dealership to give one a whirl. The Tipo first put in an appearance in 1988 when it offered a roomier but rather clunky looking alternative to the Ford Escort. In 1995 it was replaced by the far more stylish Bravo and was thought of no more until 2016 when Fiat decided to revive the name in Europe. The new version retains the boxy proportions of the original which makes for plenty of interior space but, sadly, does little for the looks. The car looks too tall and ungainly and the stylists have overcompensated with a multitude of creases and edges. Compared to the pretty Vauxhall Astra or the classic proportions of the VW Golf, it really doesn’t cut the mustard. Climb inside and the plastics are low rent, the dash cluttered and the dials overly fussy. On the plus side, there’s plenty of space both front and rear and equipment levels are good, particularly if you go for top of the range Lounge spec, which throws in satnav with live services, a reversing camera and assorted other goodies. However, the 5 inch infotainment touchscreen is too small and so are the menu icons. There are just two engines on offer, a 1.4 litre petrol and a 1.6 litre diesel. The turbocharged petrol and the diesel both produce 118bhp, but the diesel has better lowdown grunt and is much more economical. I drove the petrol version and found it decidedly lacklustre. Although the Tipo can supposedly hit 62mph in under 10 seconds, it’s hard work getting there, and the notchy, imprecise gearbox doesn’t encourage you to work it through the gears. The engine is at least reasonably refined, but the excessive wind noise makes it a poor motorway cruiser. An average 35mpg wasn’t too impressive either. The handling is poor in every respect; it’s reluctant to turn in, rolls too much in the corners and doesn’t have enough grip.

26

The steering is vague and lacking in feedback at speed but, bizarrely, is too heavy at low speeds. Okay, there’s a “City” button that makes the steering ultra-light for parking, but it shouldn’t be necessary. Don’t think that the soft suspension makes for a comfortable ride either, it crashes into every pothole and the body vibrates even on good road surfaces, suggesting a lack of rigidity in the monocoque. The family hatch segment is one of the mainstays for the volume manufacturers. Competition is fierce and you need to have a good offering to stand a chance of succeeding. To be honest, I can’t understand why Fiat are even bothering with the Tipo. It is inferior to the Focus, Golf and Astra in almost every respect and Fiat are having considerable success in this sector with the quirky and surprisingly appealing 500L. The answer may lie in the price. With an entry level model costing just £13,800, the Tipo is considerably cheaper than a Corsa or Fiesta, let alone a Focus or Astra. Even so, if you opt for the diesel and the Lounge trim, you’re suddenly in the same price range as the major players and no one in their right mind would choose a Tipo over an Astra for the same money. The truth is that Fiat shift a lot of Tipos in South America where price, space and equipment levels take precedence over styling and driving dynamics. Fiat probably figure they may as well market them in the UK, but that doesn’t mean that you might as well buy one. Kit Johnson Car as tested Fiat Tipo 1.4 T-Jet Easy Plus £15,800 RRP

Vet’s Column

Are you thinking about getting a New Pet? Spring is finally here and after a long winter many families are thinking about bringing a new furry member into the family. If you’re thinking about getting a new pet, it is a fun change, but bear in mind that there are a few things to think about first, to be ensured that you get a pet from a reputable source and that you are ready for what you are about to undertake. It’s definitely advisable to seek advice before you get your new pet. Firstly, all pets need a safe and comfy bed, an exercise area, a toilet area and suitable food specific for its individual needs. Think about what type of pet would be most suitable to your lifestyle and the accommodation and facilities which you would be able to provide. For example, the size of your house and garden, the time you could spend with the pet and exercise you’d be able to offer. Depending on the answers to these questions, it may be apparent that you would be most suited to a certain pet. When you have decided what animal would suit you best and you go to pick up your new pet it is certainly advisable for any species of animal, to speak to a vet for advice. It is easier going to collect your pet prepared with what you should be expecting and with what you will be required to do when you get home. Also book in for a health check as soon as possible. It is recommended to reduce the stress of moving to a new home by continuing the same food as they are used to (hopefully

28

you can get a sample of this from the breeder) and by ensuring that you have provided a safe, warm and comfy bed. The food can be changed if you prefer but it is important to do this gradually. All pets perceive ‘change in routine’ as a stressful event and for example, a new puppy will certainly see coming away from the house and litter they are used to as a big change for them. When your pet is young, inquisitive and keen to learn is the best time to socialise. This will make a well rounded, well handled and tolerant pet. If you have a dog, have a look into local classes available. Insurance is something also to think about as all pets are expensive with feeding, housing and preventative medicine requirements. Insurance won’t help with these costs but if the worst happened and your pet became unfortunately injured, vet costs can sometimes be an unpredictable necessity. If you’re new to keeping animals or if you have had pets before, remember that a new pet is always a new start. If you have pets or children already then the adjustment period may require some more thought. But if you feel that it will be right for you, then a new pet can bring a lot of enjoyment and fun into a household. Drove Vets
