Edit or’s Letter Nice to meet you…

One of the best things about this job is the chance to meet so many people. I’ve interviewed over a hundred people for the People piece, from all walks of life. Every single one of them has been interesting to talk to, and I have liked them all. I often get told that the interview is the first thing readers turn to in the magazine, which is great to know. This month our interviewee is Karien White from Vets4Pets – originally from South Africa, Karien has lived in the UK since 2008. Her story about why she came to the UK is very romantic! Last month I mentioned the great service I had from Green Machine Computers, and this month we have a feature on two of the guys that have got a break from the company – Green Machine is a Social Enterprise giving training opportunities to a wide range of people including some who may not have got a chance elsewhere. Elsewhere you can read about a new law firm opening, the success of Marlborough and local Villages in competitions and our regular vet’s column, reminding of dangers to watch out for this winter. I hope you enjoy it!

Karien White

Karien White is one of the co-owners of Vets4Pets, based on Marlborough Business Park. Originally from South Africa, she lives with her husband Mark, their two sons, Ethan 6, and Luke, 4, and a small menagerie of pets. How long have you been in England, and what tempted you to move here? I like to think it is a romantic story – my husband Mark and I were first loves when we were young in South Africa; it didn’t work out then, and we went our separate ways. Ten years later we reconnected via Facebook (Mark was in England by this time), we got on well and he invited me to come and visit him for two weeks. I’d never been out of the country before! That went so well that I went home (I had a return ticket) and planned our wedding. Mark came home for our wedding three months later and we got married on 3 November 2008. I came to the UK to be with him, and now it’s our home with our two boys. What was it like growing up in South Africa? I had a wonderful childhood growing up there. I am from Cape Town which is very beautiful and had a great outdoor life. I’ve just come back from a month-long visit with the boys, it was great to spend so much time seeing family. I love my life here, but the one thing I do miss is seeing my family. What made you want to be a vet? It’s an interesting story – when I was 18 I had no idea what I wanted to do. I didn’t go to University, but spent a few years in the corporate world in various jobs from PA work, to finance. One Christmas Eve our big ginger cat came home with a nasty abscess. We took him to the vet, and I found the whole thing completely fascinating. I decided there and then that I wanted to be a vet – it was a real light bulb moment. I was 24 at the time, and applied and got into university to study Veterinary Medicine. I qualified in 2007, not long before moving to England. Did training in South Africa mean you got to treat some exotic animals? To be honest, it wasn’t a lot different to training in the UK. We did various rotations – sheep and goats, horses, cows, small animals. There was the odd unusual case – I did treat a lion once,

6

I really love dealing with clients. I enjoy doing consultations; operations etc are just a bonus.

and we had a few penguins and other seabirds. On one occasion I had to give a snake a vitamin injection! What is a typical day for you here? One of the great things about being a vet, is that there is no typical day. Every day brings different people and their animals, and I love the variety. Each day we will have consultations, and operations. At lunch times I will catch up on admin and test results, calling clients etc. We treat mostly dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters and guinea pigs, with an occasional exotic creature thrown in for good measure. For instance, we had a bearded dragon brought in the other day that someone found on the loose in Marlborough. We’re hoping to find its owner. We can have emergency cases at any time. We are open from 9.30 to 7pm, so it’s a pretty long day.

People You’ve recently invested in the business, and are now co-owner? Yes, that’s right, I started here as a locum when the practice opened about eighteen months ago. I joined as permanent staff in May. Matt and Mark who started the practice also run a couple of other branches, and they wanted someone to go into partnership with. My colleague, Chloe Malin, (Head Nurse) and I decided that we would like to take on the practice together, and we are now the majority shareholders in the business. We hit it off straight away, and psychometric tests done at head office showed that we are a great fit, with complementary skills. It’s all still new, but we are very excited to develop the business together. The next development of the business is the opening of a new room upstairs with its own entrance – this will be purely for cats, who can get very stressed when confronted with other animals. We intend to be an accredited cat friendly practice. We’ve also got a new vet starting soon, so we can manage the extra work. What do you enjoy most about being a vet? I really love dealing with clients. I enjoy doing consultations; operations etc are just a bonus. Pets are so important to people, and it’s essential to be empathetic. It’s very rewarding to be able to help pets get better, and therefore make owners happy. Even when a pet is at the end of its life, I like to think that we make it easier for owners by being understanding and

sympathetic, and helping them to make the right decision. You have lots of pets yourself? Yes, we have a dog, two cats, a 72-year old tortoise we sort of “inherited” from friends, and a free-range rabbit that lives under our shed. We also regularly look after an African Grey parrot, that prefers men to women! I’ve always had pets and other animals around the home. My father had racing pigeons, and when I was a child we had a chicken called Henny, who every morning would come and peck on the sliding door to be let in, then jump up on the sofa and lay an egg! Vets4Pets is a franchise – does that make it less personal? Not at all, as each branch is locally owned. Effectively you get the benefits of a big company whilst getting a personal service. The benefits of systems and economies of scale let us spend more time concentrating on what matters most, pets and their owners. Do you live in Marlborough? No, we are in the process of moving though. Initially we are going to rent while we find the right place to buy. The most important thing is that we find the right school for the boys, so we want to take our time finding the right home. What do you do in your spare time? I like to spend time with the family. I enjoy cooking and am very house proud. I also like gardening. As South Africans we love a braai (like a

barbeque, but burning wood), which traditionally can be cooked in in an outdoor or indoor space. English houses not so set up for it, so we often improvise in inclement weather by opening the garage door! As a family we enjoy swimming and going for bike rides. I’m looking forward to getting to know the area around Marlborough better. I’ve recently taken up running – I was inspired by a friend who completed the Swindon Half Marathon, and have committed to doing it next year. It’s going quite well – I surprised myself by being able to run 5k in about 30mins. What music do you enjoy? I love all sorts, except heavy metal! It depends what mood I’m in – on the drive home I have Classic FM on, I find it relaxing, whereas on the way to work I listen to Radio 1, which psyches me up for the day. I’ve only ever been to one concert – it was Westlife. I’m petite and would never be able to see, no matter how expensive the ticket! How about films? When I was younger I would go to the cinema weekly, but since having a family I don’t get the time. It tends to be with the kids to see films such as The Secret Life of Pets. (Very appropriate) I occasionally go to the theatre to see a play with a friend. Vets4Pets is based at Marlborough Business Park. You can contact them on 01672 529020

Marlborough Law opens its doors Solicitors Karen Salmon and Alex Atkins have recently joined forces to form Marlborough Law, a new legal services company based on Elcot Park in Marlborough. “Our aim is to be a local firm for local people,” says Karen, “We aim to provide a personal service for private individuals and small businesses. Clients can expect straighttalking, good advice and help at a reasonable cost.” The company sees an opportunity to help people, often by offering timely advice before issues can arise. Alex explains “For example, my experience with small businesses indicates that many of them could save themselves both time and money by taking legal advice early. When setting up a business, people tend to use an accountant but don’t think of the benefit of using a solicitor. We can advise on all types of business structure, contracts, employment issues, and negotiations - often a little investment up front can save major expenditure later” The company offers a wide range of services too including Family Law, Employment Law, Wills and Probate, Landlord and Tenant advice, Property Law and Commercial Matters. “We are both committed to offering a friendly, straight forward and efficient service, and find it very rewarding to help people resolve their legal problems.” says Karen, “We offer a no obligation free initial 30-minute consultation to establish how we can help and are also offering flexible payment plans to help spread costs. For anyone interested in finding out more we are holding an Open Day on Thursday 16 November, from 4pm. All are welcome” Marlborough Law is at Elcot Park, Marlborough, SN8 2BG. Great Bedwyn and Mildenhall celebrate Best Kept Village wins

Congratulations to both Great Bedwyn and Mildenhall (Minal), who have both won their categories in this year’s Council for the Protection of Rural England Best Kept Village Awards. Great Bedwyn went one better than last year’s second place to take the crown in the Large Village category (between 1001 and 3,500 residents), whilst Minal claimed the prize for Best Kept Medium Village (301 to 1000 residents). Judging was based on a written submission and a site visit focused primarily on communal buildings and public areas such as village greens, footpaths, car parks, noticeboards, bus shelters etc. The judges looked for evidence of a vibrant village which puts time and effort into its Clubs and Organisations and keeps litter and general untidiness to a minimum. Villages were presented with their awards on October 1 2017.

Marlborough wins Gold!

A huge well done to Marlborough for winning a coveted Gold award at the South West in Bloom ceremony in Torquay on Thursday, 5th October. Our Mayor, Cllr Mervyn Hall, was delighted to be called up to the stage to collect awards on behalf of the town. A huge well done to Anne Crawley, Chair of Marlborough in Bloom (MiB), who also won the award for the best portfolio. Anne and her volunteers at MiB have done a tremendous job in winning this accolade for the town. Congratulations as well to our own Town Council Grounds Team who have worked hard all year round on their huge contribution to this. There were also numerous top awards made to Marlborough’s Its Your Neighbourhood entrants – thank you for all of your efforts to help fly the flag for the town.

Refurbishment and redecoration is progressing well. The Town Council is delighted to have been awarded Big Lottery funding of more than

£9,000 for the project. We would also like to thank the Lions Club of Marlborough for its generous contribution – a £1,000 cheque handed over to our Mayor by the Club’s VicePresident, Mrs Debbie Wilson. We are now looking for funding to equip the building with furniture, white goods, kitchen utensils, sports equipment, a TV, IT equipment, etc. Please let us know if you would like to contribute towards the fund for this. We now have a page dedicated to the project on our website at www.marlborough-tc.gov.uk Here you will be able to keep up with progress at the building and also learn more about how you can cast votes for other funding awards we have applied for. All being well, we are aiming for a special opening event in December and to take bookings from early January onwards. All enquiries should be made to Sue Fry, Office Manager at the Town Council Offices.

Lifestyle

The Decline Of The Sunday Roast I was deeply saddened the other day when my son pronounced that he didn’t want any more Sunday roasts for a while. He fancied a change! Does he know how lucky he is? (For fear of sounding like my mother, I’ll stop there.) I did a little research into this, and we are by far in the minority. A survey that I found stated that only 2% of UK families now regularly sit down for a Sunday roast. Others have quick meals such as pasta, pizza or convenience food even. Sundays are a bit of a ritual in our house, particularly in the winter months. After my son’s rugby training or a match my husband starts the hours long task of pulling together a roast for the four of us. Although I bake a lot, the idea of getting a nutritious hot meal together of numerous components fills me with dread. My husband, on the other hand, likes nothing more than pottering around the kitchen and feeding us. His Sunday roasts are excellent. His mashed potato is second to none and carrots and sprouts are cooked to perfection, not to mention his Yorkshire puddings and gravy. I have to make an admission here however. I am a fuss pot when it comes to meals. I cannot bear pork. Neither the taste nor the smell (yes, even bacon) appeals to me. As for roast potatoes – forget it. Parsnips should be confined to the deepest possible pit never to return quite frankly. I appreciate that this limits the Sunday lunch menu a little but we still have chicken, lamb and beef as our staples. Oh, I’m not too keen on turkey either. My husband, like my dad and many more before them, takes great pride in sharpening his knives and carving the roast, a ritual in itself. Usually, by the time it reaches the table, the end has been carved off, known in our house as cook’s perks apparently. The “table” itself is an interesting point. Although I have recently reclaimed my dining room which, for years, became a play room, we gravitate to the island in the kitchen, perched in a row on our swivelling stools. We do however switch the TV off and communicate with each other. It might be nothing more than a chat about homework to be

20

done, getting ready for the school week and has anyone fed the cat, but at least we stop and talk. It is all too easy now to become like ships in the night, all grabbing something from the fridge at different times and eating “alone” in front of the TV, trays on our laps. The decline of the roast and the dining room leads sadly also to the decline in leftovers. How many children have had bubble and squeak, pies or curries eked out over the week. Very few I’d imagine. How many even know what bubble and squeak is! As a child, the Sunday roast was always an important part of the Sunday routine. Church in the morning, home for homework and then lunch mid afternoon around the dining table, occasionally with extended family, if not, my parents, myself and my sister. I fondly remember the smells and tastes today. That time was precious, even though we took it all for granted then. Always happy to compromise, whilst we won’t necessarily have a Sunday roast every week going forwards, I will be trying my hardest to ensure that it still remains a regular feature of our lives and I sincerely hope that this continues with my children’s families. You never know, they might even inherit the legendary gravy recipe. Fiona Kellow Fiona Kellow is a working mum of two. A tale of two Dans Over the past few years Green Machine Computers has established itself as the local specialist for recycling computer equipment, as well as offering good quality refurbished equipment and offering IT help for individuals and small businesses in the area. Perhaps not so well known is the fact that the company is a Social Enterprise that ploughs all its profits back into the business, with a focus on providing opportunities for people to train and obtain an IT qualification. These are often not your typical apprentice straight out of school.

have developed confidence through working here. Our approach is that anyone can learn IT to some degree if they have enthusiasm.

Dan Cook and Dan Baillieu are two of the people that have benefited from Green Machine’s approach to training opportunities.

Dan Baillieu is not your average apprentice either. An ex-army Warrant Officer, Dan has 23 years’ experience in the Royal Logistics Corps. Invalided out of the army after suffering injuries on active service, Dan initially came to Green Machine as a volunteer helper, and started his official apprenticeship in August.

Dan Cook is Operations Team Leader, responsible for managing the younger apprentices, and liaising with customers. “Before I joined Green Machine I was working at Subway in Marlborough, but was interested in working in the IT industry, having enjoyed it at school. I saw the opportunity at Green Machine and applied. “It has been a brilliant opportunity. Slightly different to other apprentices here, mine is in the sales/team leading area rather than technical skills. I have learned so much since I have been here, and had the chance to work across several areas. A couple of our apprentices have Aspergers or Autism, and it has been fantastic seeing how they

22

Dan Cook

“My apprenticeship has been great, and has led on to a permanent position as Operations Team Leader”

“I left the army in 2014, and have had ongoing medical issues including an operation in April this year. It was difficult for a while dealing with the change in circumstances as well as the health issues. One of the good things provided by the Army was a specialist careers advisor to help with the transition to civilian life – I met Green Machine’s founder Simon Crisp through her. We hit it off immediately, and coming to Green Machine has been fantastic as it has given me a role where I can make a real contribution”

Dan Baillieu

“My experience in the army covered a wide range of skills including people management, training, health and safety and policy. I have experience of working with young people and getting the best out of them. As Operations Manager at Green Machine, I can make a difference by working with Simon to bring in better systems and processes. I’m also doing an apprenticeship in IT skills, to get some qualifications to go with my self-taught knowledge” Managing Director Simon says “The business has grown well over the past few years. We are well known in the area for our green credentials, but also for our community involvement and our IT support and good value refurbished computers. As we’ve grown it has enabled us to offer opportunities to people that might not otherwise get the chance. We’ve found it a win-win in every case, as we’ve got back just as much as we have given.” Green Machine offer a great service. Contact them on 01672 520133,

A blooming Gold for Marlborough! After several years of Silver awards, and their elevation to the Champion of Champions class in the South West in Bloom Competition, this year Marlborough was awarded the top prize of a Gold award. As well as this amazing achievement, six of Marlborough’s “It’s Your Neighbourhood” entries received OUTSTANDING awards: Coopers Meadow, Marlborough College Gardens, Marlborough Community Orchard, The Merchants House Garden, Stonebridge Wild River Reserve, The Victorian Cemetery and The Waterfront Garden at Kennet Place. Jon Wheatley, Chairman of SouthWest in Bloom said,”The excellent water meadows and Victorian cemetery are fine examples of IYN projects which have major influence on the overall Bloom entry. The water meadows along the River Kennet demonstrate how with vision and leadership the involvement of volunteers can be used to great effect and have long term impact upon a town.”

On the overall award Jon said, “It was delight to walk around the many excellent horticultural and environment features that the Marlborough in Bloom group have developed over recent years. You are congratulated on your GOLD award and excellent standards that you have achieved throughout the year. There is a very strong commitment to improvement and it

36

was so interesting to see how the town council uses Bloom to deliver its collective services in most constructive manner which achieves many outcomes. Above all we were impressed by the whole team approach and commitment of all involved. You are a credit to the South West.” His final comment was, “You should be congratulated on your excellent Portfolio and your wonderful hospitality, you really make Bloom fun. One of the finest visits we have experienced.” The portfolio that the judges take away was also honoured with an award - The West Country Tourist Board Trophy for The Best Judge’s Portfolio. As this covers the whole of the South West – Cornwall, Devon, Wiltshire and South Gloucestershire – this is a major achievement. Marlborough in Bloom paid particular thanks to Susan Wightman at Libanus Press who produced an outstanding Portfolio with text by Anne Crawley and photographs by Richard Beale, Anna Forbes, Charlotte Hitchmough, Nicola Salt and Richard Shaw, Anne Crawley, Chairman of Marlborough in Bloom says: “It is wonderful that the dedication and love for our beautiful town has been recognised by these awards. Thanks must go to the huge number of people from the Grounds team at the Town Council to the individuals who joined in to make the whole thing possible. We will be presenting the certificates and trophies at the AGM on Tuesday 7th November at 6.30pm in the Town Hall together with a display of the work of our volunteers and of the award winning portfolio.” For more information on Marlborough in Bloom please contact Anne Crawley on 01672 512317, or visit the Marlborough in Bloom Facebook page or the website www.marlboroughinbloom.org.uk

Road Test

Suzuki Swift Many years ago I had a friend who was into amateur motorsport. He raced a souped up Citroen AX supermini but was always complaining that he was completely outclassed by the Suzuki Swifts. Very light with powerful fuel injected engines, they flew along and had very nimble handling but although the boy racers loved them, they never really gained traction with mainstream buyers. More than quarter of a century later, the Suzuki Swift is still with us and a new version has just been released. Will this one be good enough to tempt buyers away from the likes of the Corsa and Fiesta? The Swift has always had very perky styling and this version is no exception. It looks a bit like the original Mini, short bonnet, boxy cabin and a wheel at each corner. However, I think the stylists could have tried a bit harder; despite the appealing proportions, neither the front or rear end looks particularly attractive, though it looks the part from the side. Inside, there’s plenty of space for four adults, although the boot is a tad on the small side, and the whole thing feels properly screwed together. The dash is well laid out and a 7-inch touch screen for the infotainment system is standard on most models. There’s plenty of kit too, with aircon, Bluetooth connectivity, DAB radio and a leather steering wheel all standard equipment. However, once again there’s a lack of

38

attention to detail; shiny black plastic is everywhere, the switchgear is clunky and the seat fabric feels a little low rent. Tall drivers will also struggle to find a comfortable driving position. This new version is smaller than the car it replaces, although it is more spacious inside and it has a tiny 1.0 litre 3-cylinder turbocharged engine available that combines an impressive 110bhp with 61mpg. There’s also a normally aspirated 1.2 litre which is slower and less powerful but slightly more economical. With the 1.0 litre engine, the Swift weighs in at 900kg, astonishingly light for a 5-seat hatchback, and this is reflected in the driving experience. The little engine has plenty of low down grunt but is very free revving. Suzuki claim a 10 second 0-62 time but Auto Express recorded a time 2 seconds under that when they tested it; it certainly feels very peppy. The handling is agile and nimble and it’s just as much fun to zip around town in as it is on a twisty B road. Apart from slightly light steering, it is on a par with the class leading Ford Fiesta – praise indeed! There is a downside to all this featherweight agility though; the ride is anything but supple. At low speeds on

a bad road surface you get bounced around the cabin and the ride is overly firm in most situations. All this vibration translates into noise and it is not helped by excessive wind roar; this is not an especially refined little car. So, has the Swift managed to make the transition from boy racer material to mainstream supermini? Well, the good news is that the Swift is still great fun to drive and it performs and handles like a dream. When the 150bhp sports version arrives, it really will be a pocket rocket. This new version also has plenty of space and practicality together with good levels of standard equipment. However, that peppy little engine and all that equipment come at a price and it is no longer the bargain it once was, although it is still a lot cheaper than the Fiesta or VW Polo. On the downside, the styling detail and quality of the interior are not quite up to scratch and the jittery ride and poor refinement will put some buyers off. Still, it will be very reliable and should hold its value well; it’s a convincing alternative to the Skoda Fabia. Kit Johnson Car as tested Suzuki Swift 1.0 Boosterjet SZ-T £12,999 RRP

Vet’s Column

Winter Dangers As we’re nearing winter, we’ll soon have the pleasure of defrosting our cars! So, many of us will also be reaching for the antifreeze. Unfortunately, antifreeze often contains a liquid product called ‘ethylene glycol’, which is very toxic to domestic animals, and particularly cats. Ethylene glycol can be sweet-tasting, so cats will often readily lap it up. And only a small amount can be fatal, in particular, causing kidney damage, as well as low blood calcium levels. The sooner your pet receives veterinary treatment after exposure, the better their chance of survival. Your vet can administer a product called ‘ethanol’ that, when given early enough, may prevent the breakdown of ethylene glycol to the toxic product. Also, your vet can screen your pet’s blood and urine to assess their status, and administer other supportive treatments such as a drip. Unfortunately, once kidney damage has occurred, treatment is of limited benefit. To minimise the risk of antifreeze exposure: • Always keep antifreeze in clearly labelled and sealed containers; • Keep these containers away from pets and their environment; • Clean up any spills immediately; • And always dispose of antifreeze safely and responsibly. Sadly, there have been reports of deliberate antifreeze poisoning in cats across the country. The RSPCA* have issued a reminder that ‘antifreeze poisoning can cause animals pain, suffering and distress’ and that the ‘poisoning of a cat can constitute a criminal offence…with the maximum penalty for anyone found guilty of this offence of up to 6 months imprisonment and / or a fine of £20,000’. If you witness your pet ingesting antifreeze, or suspect that they might have, or if they show any of the following signs, contact your vet immediately: • lethargy / unexpected tiredness / coma; • vomiting / reduced appetite; • drunk / uncoordinated appearance; • seizures / fits;

40

• difficulty breathing / increased breathing rate / panting; • increased thirst; • increased urination (or, conversely, no urination). Other dangers Another potential hazard during the winter months is rock salt (the mixture of salt and grit). This can be problematic if ingested, which may occur if your pet licks their feet after walking through gritted snow. So it’s important to wipe their feet, legs and tummy after a walk, if rock salt has been spread. And if you suspect that your pet has ingested any, do contact your vet immediately. Apart from examining your pet, they may need to make your pet vomit, check the sodium levels in their blood, or consider other specific treatments, depending on your pet’s clinical condition. And one last reminder, with the approaching festive season, chocolate, grapes (and raisins, currants and sultanas), macadamia nuts, peanuts, onions (and garlic, leeks, shallots and chives), mistletoe, poinsettia and holly berries can all be toxic. So that also potentially includes cakes, mince pies and chocolate containing fruit, as well as onion gravy and some stuffing. If your pet ingests any of the products outlined above, or there are other products that you are unsure about, don’t hesitate to contact your vet. They will be able to confirm whether your pet needs to be seen, and how promptly. Generally, if a toxic ingestion has occurred, the more quickly a patient is seen by a vet, the better the chances of them recovering. Drove Vets
