Edit or’s Letter Happy Christmas!
Having worked for a large retailer I am not one of those who minds Christmas decorations in November (after the fifth mind you), but I agree with our columnist Fiona, that December is when we can really start getting into the spirit. I also agree with her that everyone has their own Christmas traditions – she bakes a gingerbread house, I make a chocolate roulade log; she listens to Enya’s Christmas Album, I plump for The Best Christmas Album in the World Ever! (sorry). Some traditions are shared - I too have played “Turkey Bingo” (see page 16 for explanation) without realising it. The main tradition most of us share is getting together with our families, sometimes chaotic, but overall one of the best bits of Christmas – even when it involves braving the traffic on the M6 to visit family in the North! I hope you will be with family and friends this year, and wish you an enjoyable and peaceful Christmas and a very Happy New Year. Enjoy the magazine this month

Liz McIndoe Liz McIndoe is the Founder and Principal of Marlborough Dance Studios. She lives in Ramsbury and has two children and four grandchildren. Did you always want to be a dancer? Oh yes, my mother took me to dance lessons from the age of three, and by the time I was eight or nine it was all I wanted to do – be a dancer and go to ballet school. Did you achieve that ambition? Yes, although not in the way I might have imagined when I was eight! I went to a performing arts school called Bush Davies, which had an excellent reputation for dance training. I was told in no uncertain terms when I was 15 that I would not make it as a classical ballet dancer (which sounds harsh, but I believe was the right thing to do), but still wanted to make my living from dancing. I left school at 17 to join a dance company in variety theatre. My first job was a Summer Season in Morecambe followed by Pantomime in Manchester. Soon after that I became a member of The Tiller Girls, which at the time was one of the most famous dance companies in the country – famous for their high kicking routines. It must have been a culture shock leaving school straight into performing? It was definitely a whole new education, and a real adventure. In those days (the 1960s) girls were looked after by the company, you couldn’t just do what you liked. In The Tiller Girls there was a head

Even so, we all had a wonderful time, and grew very close to each other. There was such a great camaraderie that I am still friends with many of the women I met there, and the Tiller Girls has an annual reunion which is great fun. My first job with them was a six week run at the London Palladium, which I have to say were some of the best weeks of my life! Was it hard work? Absolutely, but we all loved it. I did two Summer Seasons in Blackpool (which lasted from March to October) and we did two, sometimes three shows a day. Blackpool was at the peak of its popularity, and it was like one long party. (A well behaved one I hasten to add!) Whilst in Blackpool we did Billy Cotton’s Band Show,
a TV show at the BBC. We rehearsed in Blackpool, then were sent off on a Saturday to catch the night train to London. We’d rehearse all day Sunday, with the show in the evening, then have to travel back for a show in Blackpool the next day. Exhausting, but great fun. You met your husband then didn’t you, it sounds very romantic? I suppose it was. He came to see the show in Blackpool, (from Scotland) and afterwards phoned to ask to take me out. The Head Girl took all the phone calls (we weren’t allowed to speak to random men who phoned up). She refused that time, and the next, and the next. This went on for a few weeks, until he finally wore her down. We were due to be performing in Glasgow, and he asked if

People he could take me for lunch. She was so fed up of his persistence, she suggested I should go (even though I’d never met him and didn’t even know what he looked like), as she reasoned not much harm could come of lunch. We hit it off, and were engaged six weeks later. We married in 1969, and had well over 40 years together. Sadly, he died a couple of years ago. How did you come to start your dance school? I gave up dancing a year before starting a family. We moved to this area in 1972, and my daughter was born a year later. The school was founded in 1974, and started in a very small way in the village with about 10 pupils across two classes. It grew from there, with classes in Hungerford, Marlborough and Pewsey over the years. Most of the classes are held at the dance studio at St John’s with the younger children attending classes at St Mary’s, Marlborough, Pewsey and Hungerford and I coach for exams in Ramsbury. What classes are taught? We teach the syllabus of the Royal Academy of Dance, and the children take their exams. We start with little ones of three and go up to eighteen. We’re quite a traditional school - the children call me Miss Liz, and they learn some good social skills as well as dance. All our teachers are registered with the Royal Academy, which means parents can be confident of their ability and that they are qualified to teach.
Why do you think dance is good for children? Obviously, the main reason is that they enjoy it, and like any form of exercise it is good for their health. Also though, I think it gives them confidence. The exams (which they take from the age of six) give them a sense of achievement and they feel good about themselves. They also learn that to do well you have to work hard and put effort in, which is a good lesson for us all I think! Do you still do any dance yourself? I still coach for exams and take a few classes, but don’t dance as such. I injured my back whilst dancing (probably wear and tear) so had to stop. I’m very lucky to have worked for my whole life doing something I love. My husband was a huge support in that. Some of your pupils have gone on to be successful dancers? Yes they have, although most come along for fun. Past pupils have gained places at Rambert, Royal Ballet School, R.B.S Junior Associates, Laban, and R.A.D Degree Courses. What do you enjoy the most? I get tremendous satisfaction seeing the children enjoying the dancing and achieving their grades. I also enjoy seeing previous pupils come along with their own children. We’re probably on the third generation now. And your least favourite? Admin – bits of paper are neverending!
I get tremendous satisfaction seeing the children enjoying their dancing and achieving their grades.
What do you enjoy in your spare time? I am learning Spanish – slowly! When my husband retired we bought a little place in Spain and had some great times. I still spend quite a lot of time there, and it’s nice to know some of the language – I’m getting better all the time. I like to spend time with my family, they come out to Spain in the Summer – the grandchildren love it. I love going to the theatre, though I prefer musical theatre to classical ballet I have to admit – probably my variety background. I like to do a bit of volunteering, and am a driver for the local Link scheme and Meals on Wheels. I’ve agreed to do the choreography for the next village production, which is Oliver! I’ve not worked with the Ravensbury Players before, so am looking forward to it – if a bit nervous! Do you enjoy eating out locally? Yes I do. I have an old friend from when I was very young, and we go out for a meal quite regularly. One of my favourites is The Palm, the food is excellent, and the service is wonderful – they make you feel like the Queen. I’d recommend it. Are you a reader? I love to read, and I read a lot. I do have the tendency of reading a book, enjoying it and then not long after forgetting what it was about. I like authors like Victoria Hislop and Santa Montefiore What are you doing for Christmas this year? Thanks a Million! WILTSHIRE Air Ambulance’s Lottery and Superdraw have achieved a major milestone – by generating £1 million in income. In addition, the number of people playing the charity’s award-winning lotteries - just over 35,500 - is an all-time high. As well as raising money to keep the charity’s helicopter flying and saving lives, members who play the Superdraw can win up to £25,000. One of the latest winners of the Superdraw, Sharon PottingerJones, of Highworth, near Swindon, scooped £22,439, less than four months after she joined. She has made a donation from her winnings to Wiltshire Air Ambulance (WAA). Mrs Pottinger-Jones said: “Wiltshire Air Ambulance is such a good cause. It serves the county and one day any of us might need it. I couldn’t believe I had won the Superdraw prize, I would encourage people to take part.” Rebecca de la Bedoyere, Senior Fundraising Manager at WAA, said: “We’d like to thank Sharon for making a donation from her Superdraw winnings to Wiltshire Air Ambulance. Our lotteries are our biggest, single source of income and it’s incredible to think that, simply by signing up and paying from £1 a week, our lottery members are raising enough to cover almost a third of our running costs.

We’d like to say a huge thank you to all our lottery members for their support and also to the lottery canvassers who work hard to spread the word about our award-winning lotteries. “We’d love even more people to sign up, as it really gives us a secure, reliable income that enables us to keep flying and saving lives – and of course everyone who joins is in with a chance of winning!” Each chance in WAA’s regular lottery costs £1 a week and it has a top prize of £1,000 a week. Each chance in the Superdraw costs an additional £1 a week. Players of WAA’s lotteries must be 16 years of age or over. For more information about the lotteries go to

The New Greyhound
Armistice Day At 11am on Friday, 11th November, everything came to a halt in the High Street as a siren marked the start of a 2 minutes silence with the last post sounded, like last year, by accomplished local trumpet player, Basil King. The Mayor and Councillors stood on the steps of the Town Hall alongside the Head Boy, Alex Williams and Head Girl, Anna Gent from St John’s Academy, surrounded by their fellow pupils. All stayed silent to commemorate the armistice between the Allies of World War I and Germany which was signed at eleven o’clock in the morning on the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918. Then the Mayor, an officer from the 4th Military Intelligence Battalion, a representative from the Royal British Legion and the Head Boy and Girl laid wreaths at the 7th Wiltshire Regiment War Memorial at London Road. Another very moving occasion.
Tee Time!
This year on Thursday, 13th October, the annual golf match between the Town Council and Marlborough Golf Club was won by the home team. In spite of valiant efforts by the Town Council side, ably captained by Senior Groundsman, Ryan Atcherley, we conceded defeat. Our thanks go to Ryan, Nigel Weatherly, Mike Tupman, Aaron Presley and the players
from the 4th Military Battalion who made up our team. The Mayor handed over the Rose Bowl Trophy to the Golf Club passing congratulations to the Marlborough Team Captain for his team’s great performance. Our thanks go to the Club in particular Captain Trish King and to Alan Pryor for their hospitality in again hosting this event.
Grants to Local Groups In October, our Mayor presented cheques to two local, very worthy organisations - the Jubilee Centre and Manton Pre-School. These funds were awarded under the Town Council’s Small Grants Scheme which makes grants to local community and voluntary groups. The Mayor went along to the Jubilee Centre in the High Street to hand over a cheque for £1,116 to the leader of the centre, dynamic Carole Walker and her hard working team. The money will be used for providing afternoon entertainment various speakers, a visit by the Mobile History Museum, Music for Health sessions and more. Then it was a visit to the Pre-School in Manton where he met staff, committee members and their delightful pupils. Based in the Village Hall, this successful Pre-School has been running for over 40 years. The award of £300 will help to buy toys and outside equipment for this busy group of young children. More information about the

Town Councillors and staff wish all readers a very happy Christmas. Lifestyle
It’s all in the preparation Assuming my daughter gets back from her school ski trip on time on Christmas Eve, snow and ferries permitting, we will be spending Christmas this year with my in-laws. There will be ten of us for dinner, ages ranging from 5 to 78. My father-in-law’s music room becomes dining room, with two makeshift tables set up to accommodate all of us and the feast prepared singlehandedly (at her insistence) by my lovely ma-in-law. Whilst I love her meal, it prevents my husband and me from playing our new game which we have created over the past few years, when catering for Christmas. One year, when shocked at the rising price of turkey (not my favourite anyway), I suggested that we should play “Turkey Bingo”. A simple concept involving holding one’s nerve and waiting until as late as possible to buy a turkey. After all, the shops always have too many (hopefully...) and they need to clear stocks on Christmas Eve. In year one, the task was left to my husband and the children but they failed and couldn’t find one. I did however, and it was one of the nicest, most moist and reasonably priced turkeys that we have had for years. I can’t persuade ma-in-law to “risk it”, so there won’t be any Turkey Bingo this year. These traditions, old and new, before the day itself are often to be treasured. Christmas day is akin to your wedding day – you know that you are having a lovely time but, before you know it, it’s over in a blur of food, wrapping paper and noise. Call me a misery, but Christmas time should really not officially start until 1 December. I don’t want to see Christmas adverts on 4 November, nor do I need to know how many “sleeps” are left. Strictly is only half way
18
through and I’m a Celebrity hasn’t even started yet, for goodness sake. I’m just not ready for it, although have now felt the urge to start in order to keep up with everyone else. Mum, if you’re reading, yes, I know that you’ve bought, wrapped and labelled everything. You have told me several times now…. As I say, post 1 December, I am full of Christmas spirit. The sweet sherry comes out of the garage and the mince pies start to be baked. My Mum always regaled us with her favourite album “Non-stop Roller Christmas Disco!” Oh yes, you had to hear it to believe it. Now it’s my turn. I plump for a bit of Brat Pack, Doris Day, Enya’s Christmas album or traditional carols, depending on my mood and what I happen to be baking. One of my favourite Christmas bakes is the gingerbread house. I make two, one for my children and one for my friend’s children. I do, however, find it slightly difficult to let go and let the children decorate them. As well as covering every corner of the kitchen in icing and chocolate buttons, I have to resist the urge to take over the decoration itself. The end product is always beautiful (except for the year that I left the tinned peaches inside before putting the roof on. Whilst a tin is a great support for a wall as it sets in place, it should then be removed!) Although my children are now at senior school, they still want to do this and I dread the day that it stops. I shall have to find some other children to decorate with. I also like to dress up for an evening out or party, so the office Christmas “do” is a great
chance to relax and socialise with colleagues, whilst donning our glad rags. The typical “lawyer uniform” of dark suits can be a little dull, so it’s great to see the sparkly dresses and shoes that my colleagues wear away from work. Then again, what’s better than a cosy pyjama day in front of the fire with my family watching a classic family movie? Although “It’s a Wonderful Life” is fantastic, for me, it has to be Elf. Every time he falls out of the Christmas tree I can’t help collapsing with laughter. Simple, slapstick family fun. Just brilliant. Whatever your tastes and wherever you celebrate the festive season, I wish all of you a wonderful Christmas and a very happy and healthy New Year. Fiona Kellow Fiona Kellow is a working mum of two. Christmas: Not always a Season of Joy! Oh Bah Humbug some of our avid readers would say! Definitely not the case here, the DGR Law office will be full of Christmas Cheer and indeed the Salmon House will be covered in lights and inflatable Father Christmas, polar bear statues and dancing penguins. However, before all the festivities start the DGR Family department will be busy trying to help our Clients in the Separated Parents Programme sort out the arrangements for Christmas and New Year. Being the child of separated parents is not always, double presents, double the fun. It can often be a tense time while parents argue about who will have the children on Christmas day, who will drive the children to which grandparent, who will buy the main large presents, who has the money to buy the large presents, is the choice of present acceptable to both parents, whose New Year’s eve party will the children be going to etc etc etc. That is why we ask parents to start thinking about arrangements for the Children now before time runs out and stress levels are at an all-time high.
Having been involved in many Children Arrangement proceedings in the Family Courts in Swindon, Chippenham and Bath it is fairly clear that the current family judges look to alternate Christmas and New Year between parents. That means one parent has the Children from Christmas Eve or 23rd December to the 29th/ 30th December and the other parent has the Children from 29th / 30th December until the day before school returns one year and the opposite happens the following year. This all seems rather civilised and organised however separated parents become extremely anxious about not seeing their children opening their presents on Christmas Day and become defensive when trying to come to an agreement. We would encourage parents who feel like this to stop and take a deep breath and think about the children. Children, at Christmas, like fun, attention, games, laughter and sweets. They like presents of course but they also like to spend time with their parents who have often worked all year and now have a couple of weeks or 10 days off to have a rest and some fun. For some children they are too young to know that Christmas Day is December 25th, they only know that it’s the day they open presents and are made to eat brussels sprouts and an old lady comes on the television to talk to everyone before more fun is had. We, at DGR Law, would advise our Separated Parents this year to plan early, think ahead and make every day whichever day they spend

Can you help?
We would also like to remember the unfortunate families that DGR Law Family Department support at the Swindon Women’s Aid. This time of year is our busiest time for referrals for both shelter for families and outreach help. Many of the families we support won’t be having such a nice time at Christmas with no money, no possessions, no presents and not even a toothbrush. If any of our kind readers have any spare presents such as gifts for Mums and teenagers – perfume/make up sets, PJs, Slippers, clothes various sizes, Vouchers, Dvds, please bring to the DGR Law offices on Friday December 9th after 1pm and have a mulled wine and a mince pie. May we take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Vet’s Column
Pets at Christmas Paws up anyone who eats way too much on Christmas Day, then spends Boxing Day paying the price? Mine are both up! Still it’s only once a year and it’s a great time to get together and overindulge. Whereas too much food and drink makes us unwell and sluggish, the effects could be much more serious for your pet. The result of overfeeding your dog Christmas leftovers may be limited to some stomach pain and diarrhoea, but may have more serious consequences in some. Chicken, turkey or other small bones can splinter in the throat. An excess of fatty foods can cause inflammation of the pancreas which can be very painful and make your pet extremely unwell. This can usually be treated with intravenous fluids and medication, but can be very serious in some dogs. Some dogs are prone to stomach bloat ( a large build up of gas in the stomach) and this may be brought on by feeding larger than usual meals which again can be extremely serious, especially if the stomach becomes twisted. If your dog shows any symptoms of retching, vomiting, enlargement of the stomach or stomach pain they should be checked by your vet as soon as possible. Many dogs, like us, love chocolate, unfortunately their liver is unable to process a chemical in chocolate and cocoa called theobromine. The theobromine passes into the blood stream very quickly and as it is not broken down continues to circulate in the dog’s body causing the heart to beat rapidly. The darker

The dog may vomit, have muscle tremors, hyperactivity or fit which could lead to death. There is no specific antidote for chocolate poisoning, but if you suspect your dog has eaten chocolate contact your veterinary surgery immediately as quick veterinary treatment could save your dog’s life. Prevention is always best, avoid feeding your dog or cat chocolate as treats (and make sure your children know not to as well). Any chocolate presents should be wrapped and kept in cupboards out of reach, not left under the tree. Any chocolate decorations on the tree should be on the high branches out of reach. Other treats to avoid giving your dog are raisins or grapes which may cause renal failure in some dogs and macadamia nuts which can also be poisonous. Yew tree, holly, mistletoe and lilies are toxic if eaten, so these
should be kept out of reach of pets too. The Christmas tree can be hazardous for pets too, cover up wires from fairy lights so they cannot be chewed and burn or electrocute your pet. Fallen tree needles can be sharp and stick into your pet’s paws. Make sure your tree is well anchored so it cannot be knocked over. Christmas decorations should preferably be unbreakable and not too small, young pets and cats can be particularly interested in decorations so avoid any tinsel or ribbon which may be swallowed and cause blockages in the gut. And remember Christmas can be a sad and stressful time for many pets with extra people and noise so make sure they have a safe haven to escape to when things get too busy! I hope you and your pets have a happy and healthy Christmas and New Year. Always remember, if you have any concerns about your pet, please contact your Vet.
