Editor’s Letter Thank you very much!

When I was a child National Health spectacles were horrendous black rimmed monstrosities that guaranteed name-calling in class. My parents were kind to me and invested in fashionable frames that I felt comfortable and more importantly confident in. On a recent visit to Specsavers with my daughter who is seventeen and having to get glasses for the first time, I was impressed by their offer for those entitled to an NHS voucher (which she is as she is in full time education). Even though the voucher is only worth around £35, we were able to get a stylish pair of designer glasses usually priced at £149, for only £65, under Specsavers’ special offer (and if she had chosen cheaper frames they would have cost even less). It occurred to me that we are quick to complain and tell all our friends when we receive poor service, but don’t often share great service as widely. (And the service was great as well as the price). So well done Specsavers, and thank you! I believe that service is generally at its best when the people serving you have a strong connection to the business they are working in. Specsavers is a franchise, and therefore owned by the people running the branch – effectively an independent local business under the umbrella of a national chain. Marlborough is lucky to have a higher proportion than average of independents – I think it’s really important to support them as they give the town its personality and put money back into the local economy. A good example of an independent business is MimO, run in The Ropeworks by Sally Ballard. She’s our interviewee this month, you can read about her and her new venture – Made @ MimO, a place to learn creative courses in the heart of Marlborough. There’s all our regulars too, and a new feature “A day in the life of..”, this month it’s dog behaviourist Lez Graham. Hope you enjoy….

People

Sally Ballard Sally Ballard runs MimO, a vintage furniture and home shop, and Made@ MimO, a creative studio that hosts a range of arts courses. She lives in Marlborough, and has two sons, Alex, 22 and Will, 19, and a very friendly black Labrador called Monty. Are you from Marlborough originally? No, although I’ve been in the area for a long time now – I lived in Ramsbury for nearly 16 years, and moved to Marlborough last year. My family are in Oxford, where I grew up. Before moving to Ramsbury I had moved around a lot – I probably moved house about 15 times in 25 years! Tell us a bit about your background When my children were younger I was a full time mum. Before they came along I worked in Interior Design, I set up the design side for an antiques shop called Reindeer Interiors in Northamptonshire. (I was living in Woburn at the time). I really enjoyed the Project Management side of it, which was challenging but rewarding. I learnt a lot about furniture, and developed a good eye for design. After moving to Burford in the Cotwolds I ran an interior design shop called Arcadia in nearby Chipping Norton. How did MimO come about? I’ve always been interested in collecting things and had accumulated quite a lot of stuff over the years. I was wandering around The Ropeworks not long after Eric’s Attic opened, and got talking to Gary who runs it. He offered to let me sell my stuff from there in return for helping out in the shop, which worked

6

quite well for me. After a while a space that later became MimO became available, and I took it on as my own shop. What will you find at MimO? It’s where you’d come to find country furniture, old pine, painted furniture and quirky decorative items. I am learning upholstery as well, and re-inventing furniture from its original purpose. I have a particular love of unusual lighting and have a storeroom full of projects waiting to happen! Stock is changing all the time but some of the things in the shop at the moment include a modernist Danish day-bed, a deep blue Victorian velvet chesterfield and some original aluminium baker’s tins doubling as planters! Where do you find your stock? In a variety of ways – through auctions such as Jubilee Auctions in Pewsey (I often go with a friend as we stop each other getting carried away), antique fairs and even car boot sales. Quite often people come in with things to sell, and I often source things that I know people are looking for – I have an enquiries book so I can keep an eye out for things people want.

What prompted you to set up Made@ MimO? I have had the idea of setting up a place for people to come and learn creative subjects for a long time – I just didn’t have the space! When the room next to mine in the Ropeworks became available it was the perfect opportunity. I am still developing the business and finding new tutors, it’s very absorbing! How is it going? It’s brilliant! I’m still on a steep learning curve, as there are many things to consider that you only learn by doing. You could say that I started at the wrong time (last summer) as many people were on holiday – but it meant that we could ease ourselves in gently without being too busy to start off with. What type of courses are you running? They are all creative – from photography, to artistic journaling, dressmaking to creative writing and floristry and millinery. The idea is to create a welcoming space where people can come and relax, meet new people and learn a new skill. We’ve had some fabulous courses with really interesting people – both the tutors and the attendees. I took part in Mavis Cheek’s Creative Writing

People course, which as I had never done anything like it before was a bit daunting – but it was a wonderful group that quickly gelled, and we all had great fun exploring our sometimes unknown writing talents! It was really stimulating. Are you still developing the courses? All the time – I’m always interested to talk to anyone with skills that they might want to share with others. At the moment I am keen to find someone to teach basic sewing skills and various art techniques, but I am always open to ideas. I have a fabulous designer/ dressmaker on board and would like to develop Marlborough’s very own Sewing Bee! I am developing ideas for hen party workshops and drop in days which will be announced soon and also,in time, I plan to do activities for children and possibly children’s craft parties etc. What do you enjoy most about your job? Definitely the interaction with people. With MimO, I’ve always enjoyed meeting people who come in to buy or sell. Chatting to someone knowledgeable about antiques and furniture, or finding something that someone has been after for ages is very rewarding. Made @ MimO has added a whole new dimension, as I really enjoy working with creative people. It’s been hard work pulling all the courses together, but seeing it all come together with people sat round the table having a great time is what makes it all worthwhile! And what do you enjoy least? Unforeseen circumstances, which thankfully don’t happen very often. For instance recently a course had to be cancelled because the tutor was taken ill – I don’t like having to let people down.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I have a good network of friends that I enjoy meeting up with. I’m quite partial to the quiz night in the Wellington which is fun. I enjoy walking the dog, who likes getting as muddy as possible! Although you could say its work I love going to auctions and antique fairs. You meet a lot of fascinating characters, and I’ve learnt a lot through going. I enjoy painting and re-inventing furniture and experimenting with different art techniques. Starting Made @ MimO has inspired me to try new things. I enjoy visiting Oxford as I still have family and friends there, and my son Alex is studying at Oxford Brookes University. It’s been interesting seeing the city from his point of view. What do you like most about Marlborough? It’s great to be within walking distance of everything, with the best aspects of a town and the countryside. Also, I’ve got to say the Ropeworks is a fantastic place. The businesses here all work together and help each other out. Brothers Marcus and Nick run Ropeworks Antiques, selling beautiful antique furniture; they also run Marlborough Teak selling garden furniture from the courtyard and on the Saturday market; Gary, who owns Eric’s Attic sells a mix of furniture and bits and pieces and Krumbz café is a godsend, as it sells fabulous sandwiches, cakes and coffee. It’s a fantastic atmosphere here, and the dogs are quite an attraction too as they are so friendly! Ever since the flood wall has been built along the River at Kennet Place, the area has become a bit of a magnet for locals and visitors. The residents and businesses (mainly Val Compton! ) have planted up the grass verge and planters (even a bicycle) next to the river with lovely seasonal flowers, making it a really welcoming place

to come and have a wander, or a coffee, whilst admiring the surroundings and wildlife. It’s delightful, especially in the Spring and Summer when the cafe has tables outside overlooking the river. Where do you like to eat out? Apart from the delicious food at Krumbz, for evenings out I enjoy Coles, or The Palm and a bit further out The Bell at Ramsbury, or on Summer evenings a drink outside The Blue Boar in Aldbourne. Or more often just dinner and chat at home with friends, which I enjoy just as much. What do you enjoy reading? Although I don’t get much time, I enjoy authors like Kate Atkinson, Edna O’Brien, Sebastien Barry and Roddy Doyle. I also love Barbara Trapido; I’m reading one of hers - Sex and Stravinsky, at the moment. I like classic literature too. And listening? Although I love music I am ashamed to say I don’t know what’s current and still love old favourites! Although I do love female singer songwriters like Bjork, Sinead O’Connor, Kate Bush and Suzanne Vega. I share a passion for Bob Dylan with my son who re-introduced me to him. (He’s the biggest music fan in our family, with an impressive vinyl collection and a music blog.) I’m more likely to be found listening to Radio 4 – I love their comedy programmes and things like The Moral Maze. Watching? I don’t go to the cinema as often as I’d like, though occasionally watch films when the boys are with me at home. I like a good drama, satirical shows and comedy. I like visiting art exhibitions and galleries when I get the chance; which isn’t often! Get in the swing with Marlborough Big Band The Marlborough Big Band was set up just over two years ago and plays a range of music mainly swing and jazz from 1930’s up to the present day. With members ranging in age from 14 to 60+, it’s truly open to all. The band is currently looking for new players, especially trumpets and trombones.

The only qualifications you need to join the band are to be able to read music and play your instrument to at least grade 3 level. Instruments in the band include saxophone, trumpets, trombones, guitars and drums. Rehearsals are every Friday evening at the Bear Hotel, Marlborough between 6.30 to 8.30pm. The band have performed at Marlborough Jazz Festival amongst other events such as a book launch and a charity concert at St Peter’s Church. The bands conductor Mick Allport says “The band is progressing well but we are always on the lookout for new players. At the moment we are searching for trumpet and trombone players in particular but all are welcome whatever their age. There are no stars, just a group of like-minded

10

musicians who enjoy playing music and having fun.” The Marlborough Big Band, is a community band for all ages and is linked to On Track Music Services Ltd, a registered charity, helping disadvantaged young people become involved in music. The charity aims to help with provision of instruments, music and tuition. To find out more contact 07973 213271 or 07580 237398

Bee Pewsey Project Is Causing Quite A Buzz

A local community group has pledged to help protect and promote pollinator populations across the Vale of Pewsey.

The Pewsey Environment Action Team (PEAT), with support from beekeeping expert Justin Rigg, has launched a pilot initiative to establish a network of community hives, focusing on bee breeding, to try and increase numbers of the vital pollinator in the area. According to the recently published National Pollinator

Strategy, habitat loss, pests and diseases, climate change and changes in agricultural practices have all resulted in a decline of pollinators, something which has a direct impact on the state of the countryside and the UK food industry. Bee Pewsey hopes to play its part in changing that through the pilot project here in Wiltshire. Having secured North Wessex AONB funding and been donated land by St Francis School, the first Bee Pewsey hives will be delivered in April 2015. Bees will then arrive in May, and be tended to by a team of trained Bee Pewsey volunteers, before being divided and sold to neighbouring parishes next season. But, it’s not just bees that are at threat. Other wild pollinators, including butterflies and hoverflies, are dwindling, too. That is why the Bee Pewsey project will also be looking out for these species, through wildlife-focused planting and awareness-raising open days. Emma Pritchard, Bee Pewsey co-ordinator, says: “Great thanks are due to North Wessex Downs AONB, and the management and ground staff at St Francis school, whose generous support of the project has made it possible. We look forward to working together with the local community to help bee and other wild pollinator populations recover, and hopefully thrive, across the Vale of Pewsey.” For more information about Bee Pewsey, and to get involved, please contact Emma Pritchard on emmalpritchard@gmail.com

The New Greyhound

Festival returns to the common

Following on from last year’s successful event, the Marlborough Food & Drink Festival will be returning to The Common over the weekend of 16/17 May. It will showcase the very best of local and national food, wine and real ale, giving a chance to sample, learn, enjoy and generally celebrate food. There will be cooking demonstrations, wine tasting and a music stage. It’s not a rock concert, more of a picnic in the park and plenty for children to enjoy too with Punch & Judy and street theatre. Community Covenant

Calling all budding lepidopterists ARK’s very successful Moth Nights are returning soon. These free events are for all the family to get up close and learn about the amazing diversity of moths in our local area. No need to book. Meet at the Scrub Habitat Area in Stonebridge Meadow – the meadow jointly owned by the Town Council and ARK. Best to enter by the Football Club access in Elcot Lane then turn right. Warm clothing, sensible footwear and a torch are essential.

During the visit of HRH The Duke of Kent on 27th October 2014, a Community Covenant was signed between Marlborough and the 4th Military Intelligence Battalion.

Community Covenant meeting

This helped to seal the strong bond that has grown

between 4MI and the town. To ensure that this continues, representatives of those signatories to the document – the Town Council, 4MI, St John’s, Marlborough College, the Royal British Legion and the Sports Forum - met up in mid-March to discuss collaborative projects and links. All will be working towards projects to continue the commitment to support the military and our community.

Local Council Tax Your local tax pays towards services provided by Wiltshire Council, Wiltshire Police Authority, Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service and the Town Council. The proportion which pays for the running of the Town Council, known as the precept, is by far the smallest at around 10% of your overall bill. Councillors have a duty to provide value for money services and have raised the precept by only 2.2% for 2015/16. For a Band D property this equates to an increase of £3.20 per year, 26p per month or 6p per week.

Comments and enquiries to the council are always welcome, you can contact us on:Tel: 01672 512487 Email: enquiries@marlboroughtowncouncil.gov.uk Web: www.marlboroughtowncouncil.gov.uk

A day in the life of…

Lez Graham Lez Graham is a Canine Behaviour Practitioner and Gundog Trainer, based in Collingbourne Kingston near Marlborough. I tend to get up around 6am; in the winter I check my emails, social media etc, then take the dogs (Ziggy, Dante and Spud) for a walk. (When it gets lighter earlier, I’ll take the dogs for a walk first). After the walk, I’ll have breakfast, usually a bowl of porridge with coconut milk and nuts, or rye bread with almond butter and a banana. For a while now I have been gluten and dairy free, and feel much better for it. I don’t really have a typical day – Mondays will usually be my behaviour consult day. Most tend to be problems with aggressive dogs – either to people or other dogs. I’ll spend 2 ½ to 3 hours with an owner, of which the majority of the time is spent with the owner, and maybe half an hour with the dog. I can usually help the owner sort out their problems with just one visit and report. On Wednesdays and Friday mornings I run my Gundog Training classes, these are aimed at the gundog breeds, from purely pet dogs to working gundogs, particularly those that live in a home with their owners rather than outside in a kennel. My books were prompted by not having enough time to train everyone, so I wrote them to help people do it themselves. Each of the three books now come with

16

a DVD to show how it’s done. I’ve been thrilled with how successful they’ve been – although I do spend quite a bit of time fulfilling Amazon orders!

of products with Gencon (The Lez Graham range was recently launched at Crufts), making videos for my YouTube channel etc. I’m quite busy!

Thursdays I try and keep for writing, I am planning a new book (or maybe books!) that will deal with having a dog right from puppyhood through to old age and death. (I’m particularly keen to include a chapter on dealing with the loss of a dog)

Most days I grab something quick for lunch – egg on toast, nuts, leftovers, and for dinner I have developed the habit of batch cooking and freezing meals, so it’s simple to rustle something up when my husband gets back around 7pm

Tuesdays I try and keep for everything else, and a bit of me time. To relax I am learning to play the piano – I’ve never played before, and couldn’t read music when I started. It’s like learning a new language! Around all this I fit in everything else – marketing my business, developing new ideas, training other trainers, developing a range

To relax we like to watch TV – we have become box set bingers! We’ve been through Ripper St, Breaking Bad, Dexter to name a few. Weekends we like to chill out. Our son is at university and we enjoy seeing him when he gets chance to come home. To find out more about Lez and Trained for Life, visit her website www.trainedforlife.co.uk

Who can you Trust? Once an exclusive reserve of the landed gentry Trusts - are increasingly being recommended to regular families and people with assets they wish to pass on. With the phenomenal rise in house prices over the last few decades a simple rule is that if you own a home, you should be considering a Trust. These legal arrangements have been with us since the 12th Century – and most capital, including savings and property can be held in Trust. In England and Wales Trusts can last for up to 125 years. They are able to help protect

your partner, your children, grandchildren and even great grandchildren from losing an inheritance to threats such as Re- marriage, Divorce, Bankruptcy, Long Term Care Costs and Generational Inheritance Tax (IHT). Consider that IHT is currently 40% and payable on any assets an individual has over ÂŁ325,000. One of the keys is to start a Trust as far back as possible. You might want to ask your parents if they have considered setting one up, many have not. Farsight Wills are award winning specialists in providing Wills, Trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney. Children in the Middle Divorce, or separation, isn’t easy on any party to the proceedings and least of all the children. Whilst being a child of divorced parents does not carry the stigma it did 25 years ago, it is still dreadfully hard for children – no matter what age. When a couple tell friends and family they are to separate, or divorce, many children, unsurprisingly, initially think it is their fault. “Was I too naughty? Did I stay out too late? Are they fighting because I got into trouble at school?” These and many other self -doubting thoughts go through children’s minds. Often, the next stage is anger – children become angry because they think their way of life is about to change for the worse and, sadly, many times it is. They become withdrawn, quiet and, often, get into trouble to get their estranged parents attention. Confusion and a sense of being torn between parents can set in when parents try to work out such arrangements as school pickups, tea, shopping, swimming lessons, haircuts, school uniform shopping, school events, parents evening. Children can feel emotionally pulled because they may not want

34

to go to a certain event with one parent, but feel bad that they do not want to. Here at DGR Law we are parents, as well as lawyers, and see many divorced families struggling to make their children still feel loved. We work with clients to ensure that they understand and appreciate it is hard for children. Clients going through a divorce are often consumed with guilt, anger or confusion and they can sometimes forget that children are stuck in the middle. When a divorce petition is completed and issued to Court there must be a Statement of Arrangements for children who are either under 16, or over 16 but under 18 if they are receiving education or training for a trade. This contains home and property details, education needs, childcare, maintenance, contact arrangements and children’s health. This statement is often a contentious document with each parent having a different opinion on the future of their children. If this document cannot be agreed it does mean that one parent could apply for a Child Arrangements Order, which means a Hearing in front of a District Judge. The new Child Arrangements Programme introduced in April last year has removed the terms “Residence” and “Contact” and replaced them with “Agreed Arrangements” and “Undertakings”. This allows Family Judges to work with the families and their respective solicitors to agree much more than just where

the children will live. The Order includes undertakings that parents must make to look after and provide for their children, as separated, or divorced people. Family Judges in our area are now recommending that parents in these circumstances attend a Separated Parents Course, not to learn how to be separated, but to learn how to interact with each other and make workable arrangements for all parties in the family. This is an extremely useful course and we do encourage any Clients going through a divorce to consider this. Your law firm should be committed to making the divorce process as simple as possible, with children always at the forefront of our thoughts and efforts. Gardening

April in the Garden April brings longer, warmer and brighter days and our gardens starts to burst into life with plants growing at an increasingly fast rate. Unfortunately the rate at which weeds grow also speeds up so weed regularly to help reduce the amount of weeds that grow back each year. There will also be an increase in populations of pests and disease. Deal with these as soon as you spot them. Child and animal friendly slug pellets and aphid treatments are readily available in garden centres. Roses should be sprayed with fungicide to prevent blackspot. Prune early flowering shrubs like forsythia and Chaenomeles and tie in climbers as they grow. Tall growing perennials will need staking and climbers tied in as they grow to keep them tidy and prevent any damage in heavy rain or windy days. Clear spring bedding as it fades and remove faded blooms from spring bulbs leaving the leaves to die back naturally. Summer flowering bulbs can be planted in containers and borders towards the end of April adding a lovely splash of colour to your garden.

Tidy last year’s growth from perennials and grasses to reveal new growth. If you have a greenhouse, hanging baskets and pots can be planted up early, ready to take out into the garden when all danger of frost has passed. Make sure your greenhouse is ventilated on sunny days. Container grown plants can be planted, just water regularly in dry weather.

a heated propagator and in the greenhouse sow squashes, sweetcorn, leeks and courgettes. Outside potatoes and onion sets can be planted. Seeds that can be sown include herbs, lettuce, beetroot, peas, radish, spring onions, broccoli, cabbages and cauliflowers. Keep sowings watered and thin out to produce better crops.

Sow hardy annuals straight into borders and towards the end of April many half-hardy annuals can be sown outdoors. Perennials that have outgrown their space or have started to die back in the middle can be dug up and divided. Dig up the plant, detach clumps from the outside including some roots in each division and discard the centre. Replant in soil revitalised with compost or pot up ready to give away.

Start to mow the lawn weekly with blades set high and redefine the edges with a lawn edger. Also apply a lawn feed, weed and moss killer following the manufacturer’s instructions. Any paved or decked areas should be brushed over with a stiff broom and washed down to brighten them up. Keep bird feeders topped up and ensure birds have access to fresh water spring is a busy time of year for our wildlife!

In the vegetable garden tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers can be sown in
