Editor’s Letter It’s Christmas time…

Are you in the love it or hate it camp? Or are you like me, love some things, hate others. My dislike is mostly reserved for timings – I couldn’t believe that M&S had all their Christmas decorations up in the October half term, and Christmas ads were already on the TV October is not Christmas!!!! Even Christmas TV ads in early November are annoying – including the John Lewis one (not sure I get that one this year?). However, I’m quite happy to see Christmas lights and decorations up in shops nearer the end of November, and by the beginning of December I’m starting to feel rather Christmassy. I enjoy the lead up, even stressing about what Christmas presents to buy for everyone. I agree it is probably too commercial (but let’s face it the economy would collapse if Christmas was cancelled), but I also think that people are generally in a better mood around Christmas time, even the shop assistants dealing with the Christmas rush. The best thing about Christmas of course, whether you are religious or not, is spending time with family. The period from Christmas Eve through to New Year is my favourite time of the year, even though travelling up and down the M6 is a nightmare, it’s worth it when we get where we’re going. Whether you love it or hate it, I hope you get to spend Christmas with the ones you love, Enjoy the magazine this month,

Annabel Czyba Annabel Czyba runs the Merchant’s House Shop in Marlborough, she is also a consultant with House of Colour. She has a grown up daughter, Isabel, and lives in Wroughton. What’s your connection to Marlborough? I was born in Wexcombe, on a farm which my brother and nephew still farm today. I went to Kingsbury Hill House School in Marlborough, until I left for boarding school in Somerset. I have worked in Marlborough on and off over the years too, including twice at The Merchant’s House Shop. You’ve also spent a lot of time away from the area. I trained as a dancer, but had to give up due to injury and fell into modelling. I spent my twenties and early thirties in London. It was around that time that choreographed catwalk shows were becoming popular, so my dance training was really useful. As well as modelling, I choreographed shows, taught others to model, and how to make a good first impression. As well as London, I have lived in Norfolk where my daughter was born, and also spent a couple of years in Italy. I came back to Wiltshire in the 90s. You mentioned you’ve worked at The Merchant’s House twice? I first worked there in the 90s, after the deli that I was running closed. Diana Cooper who was running the shop after Sue Sykes had become

6

ill and had to retire, knew me from the deli, and asked me if I would be interested in taking over from her. I was the first paid employee at The Merchant’s House and in my first year we opened the back room permanently, (it had previously only opened during November and December to house Christmas decorations), and doubled the profits.” What appealed to you about House of Colour? I saw what it had done for a good friend of mine, and was intrigued. I guess it fit well with my background in modelling, and I saw it as a great opportunity to help women to make the most of themselves. For some women it makes an amazing difference to their confidence and self-esteem, and that is very rewarding. Remind us what is involved? The core of what House of Colour offers is Colour Analysis, which identifies the best colours for your skin tone and eye colour. Just wearing the best colours for you can make a radical change in the way someone looks – it’s not about dictating to people, its abut helping them find what really suits them. As well as

Colour Analysis we can offer advice on make-up, personal styling, wardrobe reviews, shopping trips and of course Colour and Style for Men too. When did you start back at The Merchant’s House? About two and a half years ago, I wanted something that would work with House of Colour and this was perfect, as it has a similar level of creativity. The shop has developed over the years, and now there is a bigger team involved, with three managers and a display assistant, as well as all the wonderful volunteers. It is the main fund raiser for the house, and Christmas is particularly important. You have a lovely present room upstairs at Christmas – that must be a lot of work? Yes, it is a bit of a military operation setting it up! Even though it is only there for the few weeks leading up to Christmas it is tremendously important in generating the profits for the shop. We buy for Christmas in February, with many deliveries coming in in October, all needing to be sorted and priced. Then it takes a few days hard work to put it all together before

People it opens in early November, and after its open we need extra volunteers to staff it. It’s hard work but exciting to see it come together, and see the reactions of customers when they come into the beautiful panelled room festooned with Christmas gifts. What will people find this year? Fabulous decorations in a variety of styles and colours, a great range of gifts for men (who are so difficult to buy for), lovely toiletries and soaps, hats and gloves, a gorgeous selection of scented candles, throws and scarves. For children there are traditional toys and stocking fillers. All our Christmas cards support various charities. Is it hard to find volunteers? We have a great team of volunteers, but we’re always on the lookout for more. Some people do it because they want to support the shop, others because they love the products we sell and enjoy spending time meeting customers. It’s very sociable and volunteers all get a discount on anything they buy too.

find helping women find their confidence incredibly rewarding – often changing their look helps someone think differently about themselves. Occasionally, taking a House of Colour class has been life changing for a client. What do you like least? I’m not overly fond of admin/ paperwork! Ambitions for the future? For the shop it’s about ensuring it continues to be successful in supporting the maintaining of the house. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I enjoy making a house a home – over the years I have done up quite a few houses. I’ve loved furnishing and decorating my three bed cottage in Wroughton. I like to meet up with old friends that don’t live locally where I can – having moved around a lot I have friends all over. I like to visit Isabel in London, or have her come home when she can. We enjoy art galleries, theatre and holidays together. I especially enjoy ballet, and have enjoyed the live screenings of the Royal Ballet at the cinema. Recently I helped organise a charity fashion show, and even did a bit of modelling which I really enjoyed having not walked on a catwalk for many years!

What do you enjoy most about your job? At the shop, I really enjoy the display aspects. I like to make sure the shop is welcoming and everything is easy to find – with everything displayed clearly so customers find it easy to choose what they want.

Where do you like to shop? I like Sound Knowledge, we’re lucky to have an independent record store in Marlborough. I like Foxtrot Vintage on the High St and Luna on Kingsbury Street for clothes. I also like Eric’s Attic and Mimo, at the Ropeworks, both were great when I was getting stuff for my house.

With House of Colour, I

I like to support independent

businesses – we seem to have lost a lot in Marlborough as it’s so difficult for small businesses to manage rents/ rates. I hope that it doesn’t turn into an identikit of other high streets in the country. How about eating out? Cole’s for me, it’s a fantastic eating place. I also love the Food Gallery for lunch, and am always recommending it to others. What are you reading at the moment? I’m supposed to be reading Black Narcissus by Rumer Godden, but I’m not getting very far with it since I returned from my last holiday as I’m usually too tired to read when I get to bed! Holidays are the best time for reading for me, when I can sit and relax with a good book. What would you say was the best piece of advice you’ve been given? To always stay positive, and be grateful for the good things in life. Like anyone else, I’ve been through difficult times, but there is always something to be grateful for. I’ve found that if you think of one thing you’re thankful for when you get up in the morning, it immediately puts you in a more positive frame of mind. It works for me anyway! Where will you be spending Christmas this year? Isabel and I will be spending Christmas at a friend’s house in Norfolk. My friend has a big family and a lovely house, so we’re really looking forward to it. Local MP opens new Wellbeing Clinic The new Wellbeing clinic at 4 London Road was opened with style and celebration by owner Jill Sudbury and local MP Claire Perry last month. Jill says “Claire Perry delivered a wonderful speech, saying how much she loved the clinic and the friendly welcome she receives when she comes in. The many well-wishers, therapists and friends then danced the night away to Craig Pruess and The Ganda Boys. Craig is a well-known composer and music afficionado and has brought together the lovely Ganda boys to spread the message of World Peace across the Globe. The music was truly inspirational and a wonderful way to celebrate our new clinic and shop space.”

The clinic has moved from number 6 to number 4 London Road. Jill explains “Apart from the location we haven’t changed. We have a lovely new health shop and outside garden space, but still offer therapies and advice to the same high professional standard. There are so many ways we can help clients

Anyone who pops in to see us will receive a warm welcome”

Prospect appeals for continued support After the fantastic success of the Savernake Appeal, Prospect Hospice’s Outreach Centre based at Marlborough’s muchcherished Savernake Hospital opened at the end of October. From here the hospice will provide services including physiotherapy, day services, occupational therapy, counselling, complementary therapies and bereavement support to those who might otherwise have had to travel to the main hospice site in Wroughton. The newly refurbished Lavington Suite is the centre for these services. Mike Kennedy, Marlborough Community and Events fundraiser explains “Public support is vital to ensure that

our services and care, which cost more than £400,000 each year, can continue to be provided to those living in Marlborough and the surrounding villages. All of our services are provided free of charge which is why we depend on the support of our community to raise the funds needed to provide care to those who need it most. We always seek to make the most of the money that is raised, and 89p of every £1 donated to us is spent directly on care and services.” Prospect are never short of ideas to help you raise money including some fun and easy ways to help support them over the festive period. Choose from two different dress down days: the Santa Day on Friday 11 December, which costs just £5 and Prospect will provide you with a Santa suit to keep; or the Christmas Jumper Day on Friday 18 December. Once you’ve donned your best naff knitwear why not combine your jumper day with a festive themed bake sale as well? If dressing up isn’t really your thing Prospect’s Easy Christmas Cards are a great way to wish everyone at your school, club or workplace Merry Christmas without having to buy and write out lots of individual cards. They’ll send you a free A3 card to write your messages on and a collection box so people can make a donation in lieu of buying cards. If you are inspired to find out more about the ways in which you can raise funds to support the hospice, please visit www.prospect-hospice.net or contact Mike at mikekennedy@prospect-hospice.net

The New Greyhound

Remembrance Parade and Armistice Day

On Remembrance Sunday, hundreds lined the High Street to watch as the Parade marched to the New Road War Memorial led by the Phoenix Brass Band and the 4th Military Intelligence Battalion. Our Town Mayor and her Councillors, the Chairman of Wiltshire Council’s Area Board, the Commanding Officer of 4MI Bn, the Royal British Legion, the Emergency Services, the Cadet Forces, Scouts, Brownies and Guides all came to pay their respects to those who had lost their lives in war. Many laid wreaths at the foot of the Memorial before marching back to the Town Hall and then on to a Remembrance Service at St Mary’s Church.

At 11am on Wednesday, 11 November, everything came to a halt in the High Street as a siren signalled the start of a 2 minutes silence to mark Armistice Day. The last post was sounded by well-known and accomplished local

trumpet player, Basil King. The Mayor and Town Councillors stood alongside their staff with the Principal of St John’s Academy proudly standing with her pupils. Alongside, the Mayor, 4MI Bn and the Royal British Legion, the Head Boy and Girl from St John’s laid a wreath at the 7th Wiltshire Regiment War Memorial at London Road.

Neighbourhood Plan The Town Council is delighted to confirm that Marlborough will be working with the parishes of Mildenhall, Preshute and Savernake towards a Neighbourhood Plan. The first stage of the process has now been put in place with an application submitted to Wiltshire Council to designate these parishes as our Neighbourhood Area. Our Neighbourhood Plan will have to be approved by local people via a referendum. It will help to establish general planning policies for the development and use of land in our defined area. It may also identify sites for new homes, employment, car parks, open space, etc. and help to set a vision for the future.

Teeing-off On Thursday, 15th October, our Mayor presented the Rose

Bowl Challenge Trophy to the captains of both Marlborough Golf Club and the Town Council teams following a draw in the re-invigorated annual match between the two.

The Town Council was delighted that its team was boosted by golfers from the 4th Military Intelligence Battalion with which the town has strong links. Following the match the Golf Club hosted a celebratory meal at the Clubhouse attended by players, Golf Club members and Councillors. The Rose Bowl was donated by Councillor Margaret Rose, a very appropriate gesture in her Mayoral year.

A Happy Christmas! The Town Mayor is looking forward to local carol services, MENCAP’s Christmas party, her Christmas Day visit to Coombe End Court and Merlin Court Care Homes and much more. A highlight for her will, undoubtedly, be the Christmas Day lunch in the Town Hall. Town Councillors and staff wish all readers a very happy Christmas.

Christmas and New Year Opening The Town Council offices will be closed from 12.30pm on Thursday, 24th December 2015 and re-open on Monday, 4th January 2016. Family

Don’t get your tinsel in a tangle…. With 365 days in the year, why is Christmas always a surprise to me? Each year I think that I will do better. Perfectly selected presents wrapped to perfection with a house decorated like something out of Homes and Gardens and a four star Turkey on the table...and it all goes by in such a flash. The year that I tried to buy my presents early proved very costly. For a while I was extremely organised and very smug. I then completely forgot what I had bought and where I had put them. It was a frustrating time in January when I found them again, hidden at the back of my wardrobe. The following year I decided to leave my shopping until the last minute. The presents that I found as I dashed around the shops were dull and uninteresting and, in some instances, involved gift vouchers, something that I had always sworn never to buy, as in my mind they reflect zero effort on my part. However, with growing nephews, they have come in extremely useful, satisfying their requirements and saving me from working out what on earth a nineteen year old boy wants from his Auntie. Then there was the year that I turned domestic goddess and decided to make all of my presents. I was on a mission. I spent nights on end sewing, cooking,

16

knitting, crocheting, painting and jewellery making. There were necklaces, padded door stops, stuffed birds, jars of lemon curd, candles in tea cups, basically, you name it, I made it. It was exhausting and messy but I did feel fulfilled giving my relatives and friends door stops that they never knew they needed and stuffed birds to hang in their kitchens. I recall that I slept a lot after that. Cooking came next. Lorraine Pascale, Delia, Nigella and Mary Berry are all wheeled out around now with their shows (probably shot in the heat of the summer) and I watch with envy at how cool calm and collected they seem serving honeyed carrots and sprouts with pancetta to their merry guests. So I tried it. I made plate upon plate of beautiful star shaped mince pies and my poor family ate and ate them without complaint. Only one thing truly defeats me every year. The wrapping. I would rather have root canal work than wrap presents, no, seriously. Each time I vow to try harder

and each time my dog could do a better job. One year I even paid my daughter to do it for me. Don’t tell! So this year, I have saved my resolution until December. In order to survive the twelve hours of one day in the year I will be taking heed of the well-known Frozen song and I will “let it go”. A gift voucher in an envelope with a bow on it will be pleasing as will a shop bought mince pie. The key for me will be quality family time. Domestic Goddesses may win in the kitchen, but give me a game of Cluedo with the family round the fire any day. Have a wonderful Christmas everyone. Fiona Kellow Fiona Kellow is a working mum of two. Gardening

December In The Garden Only a few weeks left until Christmas and the festivities begin. Just when visitors are likely to see your garden it will be at it most dull and uninteresting. There are a number of ways to improve the view of your winter garden. Trees and shrubs can be planted when the ground is not frozen. Many trees come with interesting bark and will add height and drama to your garden. Try Betula ut jaquemontii with its crisp white bark and Acer griseum with its peeling bronze bark. There are shrubs with brightly coloured berries throughout the winter such as Pyracantha and Cotoneaster with the added benefit of providing some much needed food for birds. Evergreen shrubs come in many forms to give further colour and interest, the large dark green leaves of the Fatzia japonica or the Choisya sundance with its yellow tones are a welcome addition. Phormiums can be very useful for colour in the winter months with a huge variety of leaf colours from yellow and green to reddish bronzes and along with colourful evergreen grasses they can add to the texture in your garden borders. If you would like the added benefit of some winter scent try the evergreen Sarcococca confusa or Daphne odora ‘Aureomarginata. Trees and shrubs planted in the winter can lift in windy of frosty weather so check any new plantings regularly firming

34

back in if required. For some additional interest plant up some containers near the house with winter bedding mixed with some evergreens. Finish cutting back perennials that have died back and mulch borders with organic matter will help improve the gardens appearance. During fine weather perennials can be dug up, split and replanted to increase stocks. Clear away any fallen leaves from gutters, drains, paths, patios, lawns and ponds and add to your compost heap. Keep lawns looking tidy and crisp through the winter by redefining the edges using a lawn edger. Lawns can still be mown if the weather is mild but keep blades set high. Check winter protection is in place for any plants that are tender, either move them under cover or wrap in horticultural fleece if temperatures fall significantly. Pots can be moved nearer the house in groups to help offer protection. Water any plants in your greenhouse sparingly over winter and regularly remove any faded leaves or flowers to prevent the spread of disease.

In the vegetable garden stake tall brussel sprouts plants and lift parsnips as you need them. Continue to dig over vacant areas adding well rotted manure ready for the new growing season. Start to think about which vegetables you want to grow next year and plan ahead by ordering seeds. Fruit trees and bushes can be ordered and planted over the winter when the weather allows and existing fruit trees and bushes should be pruned. Attracting wildlife can be a great way of adding some interest to the winter garden. Ponds and bird baths are a vital source of drinking water for birds and other wildlife, in cold weather it is vital to ensure they don’t freeze over completely. Placing a small ball on the surface of the water will help ensure access to water and if you do notice water is completely frozen gently melt a hole in the ice. Keep bird feeders topped up and provide some shelter for wildlife in a quiet corner of your garden with a pile of logs covered in fallen leaves. Jill Blackwood

Domestic Violence at Christmas Sadly, Christmas is not the season of goodwill in every household. With the additional stresses on family life and more time spent together, coupled with an increase in alcohol consumption the Christmas holiday can be a flashpoint for Domestic Violence. With this in mind, this month we are repeating our article on the recent changes in the law.

The Office of National Statistics estimate that in 2014 1.4 million women and over 700,000 men were victims in Britain were victims of Domestic Abuse. One in ten prosecutions now involves domestic violence, while 100,000 people in England are believed to be at high risk of serious harm or murder from Domestic Abuse and nearly 80 women last year were killed by their partner or ex-partner. In the summer of 2014 the Government ran a programme to ask the public and those involved with Family Law if there was currently sufficient protection for Domestic Abuse victims, 85% of those polled said “No”, 55% said that a new offence was needed to strengthen and clarify the law on coercive and controlling behaviour in intimate relationships.

36

Following this report, in December 2014, the Home Secretary announced that there would be a new law against the other face of Domestic Abuse – “coercive and controlling behaviour in relationships”. The new Government definition of domestic violence and abuse now states: “Any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are or have been intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality. This can encompass but is not limited to the following types of abuse: • psychological • physical • sexual • financial • emotional.” Examples of this type of behaviour include being told which friends someone can have and when someone can see them, denying a partner money, including dictating what can be spent and the control of everyday activities, such as giving permission to go to the toilet and when to eat or sleep. Other forms of coercive behaviour involve the psychological abuse of a partner by putting them down, or belittling them, in front of family and friends. These abuses of a wife, husband or partner often carry on behind closed

doors and have occurred for many years. In some cases they also end up with the death of the abused victim, either at the hand of the perpetrator, or by the suicide of the victim. The Family Department at DGR Law is proud to be associated with Swindon Women’s Aid to give help and support to many women and families in the Wiltshire Area who are victims of Domestic Abuse. If you need help with any issues related to Domestic Vilence or Abuse contact me, Karen Salmon, at DGR Law on 01672 511797 or visit Swindon Women’s Aid at www.swindonwomensaid. org, 01793 610610 If you need any advice on the subject raised in this article call Karen at DGR Law for a no obligation chat on 01672 511797 Karen Salmon, DGR Law
