Edit or’s Letter Happy New Year!
Are you making any resolutions this year? Even though many of us fail to keep them, we all start off with the best intentions. (You only have to look at the spike in sales of fitness DVDs and diet cookbooks to see that) This year, I am not going to resolve to do less of anything (eat, drink etc), or more (keeping fit, housework), but to try something new every month. We all tend to get stuck in a rut, doing the same old stuff, and it will be nice to do something different. I might start with having my face read (“What?!”, I hear you ask). Face Reading is an ancient Chinese Art practiced by this month’s interviewee Saffron Ellidge (she is also an acupuncturist). She says that your face reveals your inner self to those that are skilled in the subject, and that insights from it can help you improve many areas – not least letting you know if you are compatible with your partner. (I’ve been with my partner over thirty years, so I have no questions about that). It’s all quite fascinating, and I must admit I am curious to see what she would say about me. Elsewhere in the magazine we have holiday planning (or should that be compromising), the usual news from Marlborough Town Council, local news, What’s On and pet advice. If you’re planning on trying something new, have a browse through the Community Information – you just might find some inspiration! Wishing you a happy and successful 2018!

Saffron Ellidge Saffron Ellidge is an Acupuncturist and Face Reader, working from the Wellbeing Clinic in Marlborough. She lives with her partner Ray in Chute Cadley near Andover. Tell us about your background I grew up in Little Bedwyn, and later Lockeridge. My father was a newspaper photographer and encouraged me to go into that area after University. I worked as an assistant at the Daily Telegraph in Paris, then became a sub-editor on The Sunday Times. Later I was lured to Marie Claire as a commissioning editor, but that turned out to be a nightmare – the Editor was impossible to please. Stress began to cause physical symptoms – headaches, dizziness, digestive problems, panic attacks. When my GP couldn’t help, someone suggested I try acupuncture. It was brilliant – all my symptoms dropped away! I was fascinated by how it worked, and asked so many questions that my lovely acupuncturist suggested I consider becoming one myself. I had always had an interest in alternative therapies, and the idea really resonated, so I did. Where did you train? I studied at the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine in Reading, on their three-year diploma in Acupuncture. It was challenging as not only did we have to learn Chinese Medicine, we had to learn a lot about Western Medicine too. The college was amazing, with superb teaching. I’ve been practising as an acupuncturist for over 12 years now. For five years I was the in-house acupuncturist for News International. I wrote to Rupert Murdoch to make the case, and he agreed! (It was while he was married to Wendy Deng, who is Chinese, so I thought I was in with a chance.) Most people are aware of acupuncture these days, but what is face reading? Your face is who you are, a reflection of your inner self. It shows your unique combination of features and the markings and lines that develop from experiences in life. Face reading is the skill of interpreting all these clues to give you an insight into yourself, your strengths and talents, and your health. Face reading can give you an awareness of both your emotional and

When I was studying, Lillian Bridges, a worldrenowned authority in face reading, came to the college to run a short course, as face reading also uses the Five Element template of Chinese Medicine. I was fascinated by it and went on to complete an advanced apprenticeship and master certification programme with her. Why would someone come for a face reading? Many reasons – they may have questions around their relationship, or chronic health issues that nobody has been able to help them with. Often people want guidance on what to do next in their life. I also do compatibility readings, for single people who keep choosing the wrong kind of partner, or for couples, to help them bring out the best in each other. Face reading can help a client realise what their underlying talents and strengths are, and give them the tools to deal better with problems in their lives;

People for instance, to help them find the courage to leave an unhealthy relationship, or bring their inspiration and creativity back. Or another example – an employer kept recruiting the wrong type of people, who were taking advantage of his good nature. A face reading helped him identify what it was about himself that encouraged others to exploit him, and gave him the skills to identify the facial features in others that indicated the personality traits that would fit with his business culture. Sometimes people come along just because they are curious about what I might see. Do you find yourself face reading all the time? No, it would overload my senses, if I read every person I met! It is hard not to notice things about others, though – after all, everyone reads faces to an extent. We do it naturally when we meet someone or judge people’s moods and so on. I just have the skill to be able to see more details in a face – the many layers of information. Do you find people are sceptical about it? Sometimes, but it doesn’t bother me. If people challenge me about the efficacy of it, I can usually tell them something about themselves that I couldn’t know any other way. That generally convinces them there is something to it! Even scientists are increasingly studying this area. People are just often nervous or dismissive of things they don’t understand. You have done celebrity readings? I have written a regular column for GQ, covering actors, politicians, comedians etc, and I am often asked to write for other publications.
The beauty of face reading is that it can be done from images, not just in the flesh. Recently, the Telegraph asked me to comment on whether Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are compatible. I’m pleased to say I believe they really are suited, and will do amazing humanitarian work together! What do you enjoy most about your work? I love making a difference to people’s lives. Who wouldn’t enjoy helping people every day? I get fantastic feedback from clients on how much I have helped and inspired them. They often tell me they’ve felt “seen” or understood for the first time. Anything you don’t enjoy? Having to explain what face reading is all the time! It is not very well known yet, so I feel like a trailblazer. (I have a pioneering nose, so I suppose this is not surprising.) What do you do in your spare time? I love to get out in nature. The reason I moved back to Wiltshire was because I didn’t like the harsh energy of London. I still spend part of the time there, but aim to completely move my work to Wiltshire soon. Being out in the countryside is very calming, attuning with nature is healing. The other day I was watching a family of hares in a field, and they came to play in front of me. It was truly magical. I think they could sense I was no threat. I think that comes from being present in the moment. I also love the deer that I often see while out walking. I enjoy growing my own vegetables too, with varying degrees of success! I also like to play the piano, and I’m really looking forward
to getting my piano into the new house – hopefully it will fit in the thatched cottage! What do you like most about this area? I love the Wiltshire countryside. Marlborough is wonderful – I love the wide High Street, and am very fond of Waitrose. The atmosphere is relaxed, and even though chain stores are creeping in, it still has lots of character. I enjoy driving over the hills and through Savernake Forest on my way to town. What are you reading at the moment? I’m reading the Ascent of Humanity by Charles Eisenstein. It’s an analysis of how we’ve got ourselves into the mess we are in now, and some ideas on how we might be able to get out of it. Eckhart Tolle is also great for when I want to de-stress and feel more centred again. What sort of music do you like? All sorts – although I play old favourites too much. Time for some new music! At the moment I’m listening to the Collins Guide to Bird Songs and Calls by Geoff Sample. (Not typical music, I know!) Back to my love of nature again – it’s thrilling to be able to distinguish individual bird songs and alarm calls and identify them. What do you like to watch? Getting away from the nature theme, I do enjoy watching a good box set such as The West Wing, with strong scripts and stories. I also enjoy a good period drama – I miss Downton Abbey! This year has been the Friends of Savernake Hospital have given grants totalling more than £40,000 – compared with £28,000 in 2016. Grant recipients have been many and varied, from GP practices and their patients in the Marlborough and Pewsey areas to local support groups and the Brighter Futures radiotherapy appeal. Grants to local GP surgeries have assisted with the cost of installing new automatic surgery doors, purchasing ECG and INR machines, blood monitoring equipment, equipment to check blood coagulation levels, and assistance for leg ulcer sufferers. Alzheimer’s Support (which recently won the contract with Wiltshire Council and the NHS to provide their holistic dementia services across Wiltshire thereby enabling people living with dementia to live well in their own homes and stay connected in their communities) received a grant for £7,000 from the Friends. The Great Bedwyn Friendship and Mobility Group has received £1,000 towards the cost of running its sessions. Arts Together has received £4,250 for its Wellbeing Service in the Marlborough and Pewsey areas. The Friends were able to help Brighter Futures with a further £10,000 towards their Radiotherapy Appeal and were delighted that this grant qualified for matched funding provided by Greenham Common Trust, hence increasing the grant to £20,000. The Community Nurse Team at Savernake Hospital has also received grant monies, and a grant for Cotswold House (the specialist eating disorder unit at Savernake Hospital) has just been approved. On a smaller – but no less important – scale, the Friends ensure every year that every patient that has to remain in hospital at Savernake Hospital at Christmas receives a Christmas gift. Some patients on Ailesbury Ward are especially elderly and do not have friends or family nearby. The daily trolley shop visit by Friends volunteers ensures that each patient sees a friendly visiting face and has the opportunity for a chat. These are small gestures, but for someone who is confined to a hospital bed, these gestures are invaluable.

Camels by Candlelight! Your eyes do not deceive you, that really is a live camel in the picture – a lovely surprise for those attending Julia’s House’s Carols by Candlelight concert in early December. Alongside the expected celebrity speakers, author Penny Junor and actress Stephanie Cole, mulled wine and mince pies, were two unexpected guests – a pair of camels. Therese and Temujen, were led in by their owner Lady Chichester as the final carol was being sung and then posed by the pulpit for the remainder of the service. Afterwards there was a chance for guests to pet the pair and pose with them for photos. The camels surprise was nearly let out of the bag a few days before when someone tweeted a picture of them walking through Devizes in broad daylight on their way to a dress rehearsal. Carols by Candlelight was raising money for Julia’s House, which provides care and support for families with life-limited children. The charity opened Wiltshire’s first children’s hospice in the town in May. Penny Junor commented: “I have loved this evening. It was a fantastic service, incredibly moving. It has been a mixture of tears and laughter. The camels were just the icing on the cake. They looked amazing.” For more info on Julia’s House visit their website www.juliashouse.org

Christmas Lights Switch-on 2017!
Light as our Citizen of the Year before BBC Wiltshire’s Breakfast Show host Ben Prater and two of his children helped with the countdown to the Switch-on at 6.30 pm. Our thanks go to all those involved – the Christmas Lights Committee, the Rotary Club, Lions Club, Showmen’s Guild, the Community Policing Team, 4th Military Intelligence Battalion, St John’s Ambulance, Reflex Ltd, Wheelers of Westbury, 5 Star Security, volunteer stewards and our own staff who worked hard to make the event such a success.
This year’s Christmas Lights Switch-on took place on a clear, cold and crisp moonlit winter’s night- a perfect start to the festive season. During the afternoon, children received gifts from Father Christmas in his grotto and everyone was able to amble through the market and onto fairground rides further up the High Street. Our compere, Mark Jones, did an excellent job keeping the crowd entertained and introducing our fabulous acts - St John’s Academy Band, Marlborough Academy of Dance & Drama, Eleanor Williams, a classical crossover singer, Marlborough Community Choir and Phoenix Brass.
A special acknowledgement goes to our Lead Sponsor, Now! Vauxhall Marlborough, as well as to our other supporters - the Forestry Commission, T H White, Marlborough Building Supplies, Awdry Bailey & Douglas, David Owen & Co, Pino’s Ristorante, Valentiner Designs and Daniel Claridge.
Small Grants Scheme Father Christmas and his reindeer chauffeured the Mayor to the stage just in time to announce worthy winner Alec
Our Mayor, Councillor Mervyn Hall, recently handed over a cheque for £427 to the Greatwood Charity. Based just outside Marlborough, Greatwood takes in retired racehorses and
combines their rehabilitation with educational programmes for disadvantaged children and adults with special educational needs. Currently home to 43 horses, Greatwood is going from strength to strength with over 2,000 children having benefitted from their interactions with these intelligent animals. The funding will be used to provide safety and protective equipment.
There is still time to make an application under our Small Grants Scheme for 2017/18. If you know of a local community or voluntary group needing funding for a project to benefit Marlborough or Manton, do encourage them to make an application. Forms and guidance are available on the Town Council website at www.marlborough-tc.gov.uk.

The fine art of the holiday compromise Being a collaborative family lawyer, I feel that I have acquired reasonable skills over the years in helping my clients to reach sensible compromises on financial settlements. Why the, do I find it so hard to compromise myself ? This is probably best illustrated when it comes time to choose where to go on holiday. If, like me, in the depths of the January weather and dark mornings and evenings, your thoughts turn to holidays, then it’s time to get the brochures out or start to scan the iPad to remind yourself just what a sunny sky and a warm beach look like. In previous years, deciding where and when to go on holiday has been easy as this has been decided upon by myself and my husband, and the children have done whatever we have chosen. They have suddenly reached an age, however, whereby they think that it is their divine right to decide where our hard-earned cash is spent. Things fall apart when the “little darlings” tell me that they don’t want to lie for a fortnight on a Greek island in the sun. I had images of wafting about in beautiful sarongs and floppy hats, mojito in hand, mixing with Meryl Streep, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan as they merrily warble another Abba song to me. The most taxing decision each day being when to get back in the sea for another dip…ahhh, in my head, I’m there already. Just like Meryl in the film however, I am dragged back to reality by the prospect of beautiful Santorini becoming replaced by the Great British summertime. Don’t get me wrong. I adore Britain and the multitude of beautiful landscapes and coastlines. However, the thought of taking a risk on the weather and being a taxi to a festival for my daughter and watching the bags whilst my son surfs is not quite so appealing. Our traditional two-week holiday is also morphing into several breaks over the summer, both of which having been hijacked by the children. However hard I try, however hard I tempt, they won’t budge. I really thought that I was the
14
stubborn one, but I am not a patch on them. In my head therefore, I have to accept that instead of wafting around Santorini in a beautiful beach cover up, I may instead, be sat in an anorak, under a blanket, Thermos of tea in hand on a British beach in the pouring rain. Let’s get a little perspective here however, I appreciate that on a scale of problems to have, this really isn’t a problem at all, we should be grateful for each other and grateful too for the opportunity to have a holiday. Sobering too is the prospect of the children soon deciding to go on their own holidays. Whilst it only seems five minutes ago that they were at primary school, their secondary years have flown by and in a heartbeat it will all be over. I vow therefore to grab and value every moment with the children, wherever that might be, fully aware of the true irony is that they will soon be sending me postcards from exotic climes whilst my Husband and I happily walk the Cornish coastal path in the pouring rain. Not sure that we will bump into Meryl and co, but I’m sure that, rain or shine, we will have a wonderful time together. Fiona Kellow Fiona Kellow is a working mum of two. When she isn’t running around after her family she is a Partner at Thrings Solicitors, specialising in family law.

Health
A holistic approach to wellbeing When was the last time you woke up feeling well slept, healthy, happy, and without any aches or pains? Unfortunately for many of us this is not the case. While trying to juggle family and work pressure, our health is often put on a backburner and many of us wake up feeling tired, achy, or even depressed. A bad diet, stress and a lack of sleep can slowly but gradually deteriorate our health until one day we are diagnosed with an illness. Doctors are a reliable first port of call as they can offer tests, medication and hospital treatments. But there are more avenues you can take when addressing your health. Since the beginning of mankind, Mother Nature has provided us with an abundance of solutions to our health problems. Healing plants, herbs, roots, vitamins and minerals have successfully been used for thousands of years and are still used today. Not just to alleviate health symptoms but also to help strengthen and heal our bodies and minds from within. However, it can be hard knowing exactly which natural remedy to take for your specific health conditions. We are inundated with conflicting health advice through TV and newspapers. It can be an absolute minefield choosing the right supplement. Is a £20 multivitamin really better than a £2 one? Would magnesium do the same for you as it did for your neighbour? At the Marlborough Wellbeing Clinic and Health Food Shop we give personalised advice on natural remedies on a day to day basis, and we get incredible feedback on their effectiveness. Whether you are dealing with digestive issues, depression or arthritis, we have solutions on our shelves.
18
Here are just a few examples: - Ashwaghanda, Passionflower or Saffron can help with anxiety, depression or sleep - Magnesium flakes and B6 can reduce PMS symptom - Chromium balances blood glucose levels - Montmorency Cherry juice can stop a gout attack in its tracks - Turmeric can significantly reduce inflammation - Probiotics and triphala help keep your digestion in tip top shape. And we can guide you on whether these products are right for you or not. We’d like to think of the Wellbeing Clinic and Health Food Shop as a bridge between Mother Nature and your health. A place where you can ask for expert advice on supplements and herbs to suit your specific needs. We always take the time to chat to our customers, so we can properly assess their health issues and make sure we give the right products. All our products are handpicked for quality and efficacy. So, if your New Year’s resolution is to get healthier, feel happier or rid yourself of those niggling aches and pains without medication, then it may be worth your while popping in to our store and getting some guided supplement advice. We’d be delighted to help you on your way to naturally better health. Jill Sudbury and Team The Wellbeing Clinic

Road Test
Jaguar F Pace Jaguar was very late to the luxury 4x4 party, its F Type midsize rival to the BMW X3 and Audi Q5 only went on sale last year. However, there are good reasons for this – when Tata bought Jaguar in 2008, the company desperately needed competitive cars in its traditional prestige saloon and sports car ranges. Now it has got those, it is time to spread its wings. Secondly, Tata also owns Land Rover, the company that invented the luxury off-roader, and why compete against yourself? Now that the F Pace is here, it is much more focussed on road use than the extremely capable Discovery. In the flesh it looks very impressive with an aggressive Jaguar snout, curvy rear end, big wheels and muscular flanks. It looks bigger than it actually is, and you could easily picture it as a rival to a Range Rover or Audi Q7 – Jeremy Clarkson put it up against a Bentley Bentayga costing four times as much. It looks like a driver’s car at home on a twisty B road and the sporty theme continues inside. The dash is laid out around the driver like a sports car and the body hugging front seats would be more at home in an F Type. The car I drove had bright red seat inserts, further reinforcing the performance car credentials; the interior is a world away from the gentleman’s club ambience of the Jaguars of old. Unfortunately, the quality of materials is not as luxurious as you would hope, although the leather covered dash is a nice touch.
30
Even so, there’s no shortage of space in the F Pace, either in the front or rear. Six footers have plenty of space to stretch their legs in the back seat and there’s a fairly whopping boot. Most of the usual goodies come as standard, even with basic trim specification, but opt for the top of the range S trim and you get everything your heart could desire. The F Pace borrows heavily from the XE and XF with lots of aluminium and high strength steel used in the construction, resulting in a very stiff body that weighs in at just 1800kg, featherlight for a big 4x4. Most cars will use Jaguar’s excellent 2.0 litre Ingenium diesel, tuned for torque rather than outright power. This doesn’t deliver earth shattering performance but it’s enough for most people’s needs. My first choice of engine would be the 3.0 litre V6 diesel which produces masses of power but is very refined and still manages 47mpg. The problem with this, as with the XF, is that it is only available with the S trim package, so it effectively adds £18,000 to the asking price. There’s also a 360bhp supercharged petrol engine which offers blistering performance but is seriously thirsty.
The suspension is set up for sporty handling rather than a comfortable ride and is overly firm in most conditions, particularly over bad road surfaces, but if you opt for the adaptive suspension the ride is pretty good in comfort mode. The flip side of this is the handling which is remarkably good for a big SUV. The steering is precise and provides plenty of feedback, there is very little body roll and lots of grip. Most of the time it feels like a well sorted hatchback, only in tight corners does it feel a little ponderous. I didn’t try it offroad but imagine it could deal with a snowy incline but not much more. The F Pace has a lot to recommend it. It offers good value (providing you steer clear of the larger engines), lots of space and practicality and it is well equipped, even at the lower trim levels. It looks good and will appeal to keen drivers rather than those looking for serious offroad capability. If only Jaguar would offer the 3.0 litre diesel as a £3000 upgrade, it would be perfect. Kit Johnson Car as tested Jaguar F Pace 2.0d Prestige AWD £36310 RRP

Vet’s Column
Ever changing seasons (reasons to spay your dog)
Should I get my bitch spayed? As Veterinary Surgeons we are always happy to give advice on this. The most obvious advantage of spaying is that it can prevent unwanted litters. Dogs can get pregnant from sevenmonths of age.
after each season, getting more severe each time. Hormone treatments are available but your Pet will often end up being spayed.
Some breeds benefit from having one season as they are less likely to leak urine later in life and their joints will develop normally. Other than that, early spaying is good for your pets’ health.
Spaying when young can make malignant aggressive tumours, particularly mammary gland (breast) cancer, less likely.
Pyometra is one of the most important conditions that a Veterinary Practice can diagnose! It can be life threatening. It is a diagnosis that still sends shivers down my spine. It is a good enough reason alone to have your pet spayed. Pyometra is where the womb becomes filled with fluid, this can then become infected and the infection can lead to the release toxins into the blood stream. Pyometra can cause an increased thirst, poor appetite, vomiting, dehydration, lethargy, enlarged abdomen, and depression. If untreated, it can end in toxic shock and death. In open Pyometra some of the fluid in the womb drains away - this can be seen under the bitch’s tail and it can smell disgusting. In closed Pyometra the womb just fills up and becomes a bag of fluid/ pus and can go unnoticed for longer. Patients are often admitted to be put on a drip and powerful antibiotics. If no longer intended for breeding, they are spayed. Older bitches are more at risk but it is seen after the first season. If you are suspicious that your pet has a Pyometra, please do not hesitate to contact a Veterinary Practice. We do not mind false alarms. False or phantom pregnancy is one of the most distressing and confusing conditions for your Pet. It is another good reason to have your pet spayed. It can happen when your pet does not become pregnant. Your pet behaves as if they are pregnant. Their abdomen can distend; they can start producing milk, build nests, hide away and can mother inanimate objects. It can happen
32
During a season your bitch will bleed for up to three weeks. She will have an urge to escape and find a male; and male dogs will arrive from afar to mate. Spaying makes life more convenient as there are no longer messy disruptive seasons. Once spayed your Pet tends to become better natured and shows fewer behavioural problems. Intelligence, playfulness, guarding behaviour and affection are not altered greatly by spaying. On the down side, spaying can in some bitches slow their metabolism and lead to weight gain. Feeding a correct diet without tit-bits will control this. Several drugs can suppress or temporarily postpone heat. Courses of these drugs need to be given and repeated regularly. There are side effects to using these drugs and they do not offer the same health advantages as surgery. Surgery is generally safe and very effective. The operation needs to be planned as it is often done between seasons. The initial cost can be high but in the long run it is most cost effective. Traditionally dogs have been spayed through the floor of their abdomen. Nowadays spays can also be done via keyhole surgery (Laparoscopy). The advantages of a laparoscopic spay are that only tiny incisions are made, it is less painful, the surgeon has a better view, the complications are less and the recovery faster. For more information, please contact your vet.
