Editor’s Letter Always a busy month…
July is a very busy month in Marlborough, with lots of events, many of them bringing visitors to the area. We have Marlborough Jazz Festival, Barbury Horse Trials, Marlborough College Summer School, (including gala performances open to the public) and Marlborough Open Studios (throughout the area). With all these extra people there are plenty to appreciate the efforts of those that have taken part in Marlborough in Bloom, the judging for which takes place in July. Fingers crossed for a Gold this year, hard to see what could beat all the lovely open spaces, not forgetting all the fabulous baskets and planters around the town. Our cover is a little different this month - as it’s Open Studios time I thought it would be good to feature a painting rather than a photo this month. The watercolour pic of the Town Hall is by Colin Palmer, of Wagon Yard Studios (off London Road). Although Colin won’t be at the Studios this year (he’s teaching at Summer School), you can still see his work there, along with the work of the other Wagon Yard artists Jacqui Melhuish, Kate Wade, Jane Renwick and Mary Thorne. You’ll be able to meet them over the weekends of Open Studios throughout July Pick up an Open Studios brochure or visit www.marlboroughopenstudios.co.uk Hope you enjoy this month’s issue!

Penny Lang Penny Lang is behind the newly renovated Thirty8 bar (previously Azuza), as well as running telecommunications company CAT Communications, and Zumba studio Movida Zumba – a very busy woman. She lives in Burbage, with her husband Craig, daughter Jess, and three dogs. Are you from this area originally? No, I am from Reading originally, although these days people I meet often think I am from South Africa! (More of this later). I was living and working in Twyford when I met Craig. I was a head-hunter and he was a client looking for an MD for his business which was growing beyond his ability to manage it on his own. Little did he know I would be that person! We have been together for 14 years, and the business has grown from a sole trader to a limited partnership employing 10 people. That is CAT Communications? Yes, it’s a telecommunications company working for a wide variety of businesses, from supporting local businesses through to large multinational companies. We provide phone lines, systems, data connections etc. for businesses. We treat all our clients with the same care, as all clients are very important to us. Our offices are in Pewsey, and we love the community there. Recently we provided phones to those
6
with no phone lines caused by outages with BT. What’s it like working with your husband? We make a really good team, as Craig is a fantastic technical expert, but not very commercial, whereas I am commercial, but not very strong technically. We both play to our strengths and recognise them in each other. We can be quite flammable as we are very different, but it’s rarely a problem and I wouldn’t change it ! CAT is just one of the businesses you are involved in? Yes, it’s good to diversify! I’m involved in several businesses, the other key ones being Movida Zumba and Thirty8. Tell us about Movida Zumba Lau Vergara set up the studio and had built a great following for her Zumba classes. Then she moved to Chile with her husband’s job. So, three of us agreed to take over the studio, me, JoJo and Anna,
as we couldn’t bear to see it close. We all went off to get certification as Zumba instructors, and shared the classes between us. I took over the Management side of it, as JoJo and Anna do a lot of classes and have young children. It’s doing really well, although my main motivation was putting back into the community, as well as being able to continue with Zumba which we are passionate about, it’s more of a hobby than a business! I love Zumba – it really doesn’t feel like exercise! For me it’s like the hedonistic dancing of a nightclub. (Although not late at night obviously) I describe it as your “you space”, where you can just let go and do something for yourself, dancing and getting fit at the same time. It’s inclusive- anyone can do it – from beginners to advanced. We have women who are recovering from illness, losing weight, just want to keep fit. It’s great!

People How about Thirty8? Both Craig and I had been eating at Azuza for ten years. When it first came up for sale we originally had a joke about taking it over, which planted the seed, and when it was still for sale a few months later we decided to take the plunge. We changed the name, and have completely refurbished the place. At first we thought it would be a cosmetic job, redecorating and cleaning up what had become a bit of a grubby venue. On closer inspection though we needed to do much more and have done a lot of renovation work both front of house, toilets and kitchens. Our plan was to make it bright and welcoming and we think we’ve achieved that – certainly trade has increased by 80% since we opened after the changes and feedback is positive What are your plans? We are going to keep the good things – the food has always been great, freshly cooked and delicious. We’ve added gourmet burgers to the menu at an amazingly affordable price. We still have the same fabulous staff, who have always been fantastic with the customers and work so hard. Heidi our manager started working at the café when she was 14, and is a great asset. We are improving the wine list adding a cocktail menu, and would like to develop the evening menu. We are looking to recruit more staff both in the kitchen and front of house to make these plans a success. We want to be more of a wine bar in the evening, a place to pop in for pre-dinner or relax with a nice drink.
We are going to do more live events and continue to work with Sound Knowledge – so there will be a regular entertainment programme. How do you manage to run three businesses successfully, you must be very busy? I’ve learnt to plan ahead, and put my trust in the people who work with me. It’s important to delegate well so you don’t try and do everything yourself. I wasn’t always quite so chilled though, a couple of years ago I was stressed, angry, rushing around worrying about everything – heading for a heart attack. I suffered an illness which was a real wake-up call – it was that which affected my speech. At first I couldn’t speak very well, and since getting it back I talk with an accent which sounds a bit South African, I have no explanation for it! Being ill makes you reevaluate and now I don’t sweat the small stuff – I’m less stressed, less aggressive and think I have got my priorities right. What do you enjoy most about your work? I think it’s the sense of achievement from succeeding in business. It’s a real passion, so wouldn’t give it up even if we won the lottery. I see it as a real responsibility – we’re responsible for a lot of people’s livelihoods and I take that very seriously. I enjoy seeing the business and people within it grow. I’m always conscious of the impact of my actions on others and try hard to help others succeed too.
What do you find most challenging? People that don’t take customer service as seriously as I do. For example we had a very short timescale to refurbish the café, and finding great suppliers was hard work – I saw about thirty suppliers to find the people that did the work. People would come to look at the job, go away saying they would send in a quote, and were never heard from again! What do you enjoy in your spare time? I love gardening, I like to get outside, and nurture plants to maturity, nothing quite as honest as mud! I also enjoy art, more appreciating and buying it than doing it myself, I’m quite adventurous and have done things like jumping out of a plane and bungee jumping, although I wouldn’t say I made a habit of them. I also ride a motorbike, which can often be difficult to find time for but I do love it. Zumba isn’t really spare time, but it’s my passion. My Zumba classes are full of amazing people! Any ambitions left? I have travel ambitions – I would love to go to travel through the USA and go to Hawaii and whale watch. I am also nuts about animals, and would like to do more with animal rescue and perhaps some sort of play place for dogs – who knows! No doubt there are others that I haven’t even thought of yet! Are you the Bard of Marlborough?
Enjoy yourself for charity There are some excellent charity events on this month, supporting some fantastic causes. First, for music lovers is Avebury Rocks on 9 July. A quirky fundraiser, Avebury Rocks is a music festival preceded by a 15km sponsored walk with music along the way. You don’t have to take part in the sponsored walk to attend the festival, but lots of people do as it takes in some fantastic countryside. In aid of Prospect Hospice, the suggested sponsorship target is £50. Those taking part in the walk automatically get tickets for the concert. This year’s line-up includes George Wilding, Jack Moore, Ulysses, Ukey D’Ukes, Nick Harper and The Correspondents. Second is the annual outdoor play by Miracle Theatre in the garden of Maizey Lodge in Ogbourne Maizey near Marlborough. Taking place on Thursday 14 July, this has become a lovely tradition run by Marion Gordon-Finlayson. The performance takes place whatever the weather, and people are welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy before the performance. This year’s production is Life’s a Dream, a brand new adaptation by Bill Scott with music by Tom Adams. This open air production for summer is a wonderful fable, filled with passion and comedy, based on Calderon’s greatest play,

Do you enjoy writing poetry? Marlborough Litfest are running a Sonnet Competition, in which you are asked to “write back” in verse to any of Shakespeare’s sonnets.

Proceeds from the evening will this year go to The Brain Tumour Charity. Lastly, on Sunday 31 July, is The Merchant’s House Annual Summer Lunch, which takes place in the grounds of Marlborough College. This year’s lunch will be exploring the history of Punch and Judy, complete with a live performance and family friendly activities. Tickets include entertainment, a drink on arrival and a two course lunch with coffee. What better way to spend a Summer afternoon?
For ticket details etc see our What’s On, pages 20-21.
How you a approach the challenge is up to you – you can either respond in traditional sonnet form (tips on how to write a sonnet are included with the competition details), or use a much looser form, or perhaps write in a completely different style. There’s a prize of £100 for each of two categories: under 19s and adult. Winners and runners-up in each category of the Marlborough Shakespearean Sonnet Competition will also receive a copy of Loop of Jade by Sarah Howe, who will be judging the entries and who will be appearing at the festival. Our Queen and Our Community
On Sunday, 12th June, our community marked the Queen’s 90th birthday at a well-attended Civic Service at St Mary’s Church followed by celebrations at the Town Hall. It was all arranged between Churches Together and the Town Council with a focus on the Queen as well as a look at how Marlborough has changed during those 90 years. The congregation was made up of many local community and voluntary groups sitting alongside our Mayor, his fellow Councillors, the Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Richard Handover, CBE and Mayors from across the county. A recording of the speech by the then Princess Elizabeth on her birthday on 21st April 1947 was played, a poignant message where the Princess dedicated her life to the service of the Commonwealth. Dr Janneke Blokland’s own sermon focussed on the importance of how the Church, Town Council and our local community are all dedicated to Marlborough. The Revd Canon Andrew Studdert-Kennedy gave special gifts to two members of the congregation, Vinnie Harris and Bill Soames who, like the Queen, are celebrating their 90th birthdays this year. He presented representatives from various groups with a special commemorative booklet – The Servant Queen.
Those collecting these included – The Royal British Legion, Alzheimers Support, Jubilee Centre, Mencap, the Scouts, Brownies, Kennet Valley Transport and more. Afterwards the whole congregation moved across to a bunting clad Town Hall for a glass of Bucks Fizz and a royal cupcake where our new Town Cryer, Mike Tupman, MBE asked everyone to raise a glass with three cheers for the Queen.
exhibition of Marlborough memories with newspaper clippings, old photographs, Church Registers and the old Council Minute Books from 1926, 1953 and 1977 – all significant royal dates. Running on the screen throughout the event was film footage of Queen Elizabeth’s life – as a small child, her wedding to the Duke of Edinburgh, the 1953 Coronation, her Silver, Golden and Diamond Jubilee years and more. Everyone was able to take away a copy of The Servant Queen.
A Civic Selfie! The Mayor wielding a telescopic selfie stick and ably assisted by Marlborough News Online, took a selfie to commemorate the occasion. As many as possible squeezed behind him to create this modern memory.

The Town Council and Churches Together would like to thank all those who worked hard to bring this together with a special mention to David Sherratt and Michael Gray and the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre. Most importantly, many thanks to all those who came along to help celebrate on 12th June 2016. Finally, of course, a Happy Birthday to Her Majesty.

Lashings of gin...ger beer I have a confession to make. After years of camping and glamping, we have finally crossed over to the dark side and hired a camper van. As our camp site owner said, there will be no turning back now.
I started my love affair with camping as a Girl Guide and have fond memories of making bedding rolls using nappy and kilt pins and spending the night sleeping in puddles, although I wouldn’t have changed a thing. I remember the old tricks of putting Brown Owl’s bra in the flag so that it unravelled ceremoniously in the morning, and cling film over the toilet seat. How patient those poor ladies were with us, year on year playing the same old tricks on them. Camp cooking was always fun. Turfing and building a fire from sticks to eventually achieve a superb Spag Bol followed by bananas with chocolate cooked in the fire embers and marshmallows on sticks with a good old sing song, my favourites being Kumbaya and Eidelweiss. Finally it was off to bed for a midnight feast and off with our torches for a “camping wee.” We all stank of the fire for days afterwards. Then there were the wilderness years as a teenager, camping and youth hostelling in the wilds of the Brecon Beacons. We travelled so light in those
14
days with not a care in the world, swimming in the natural pools and soaking up the stunning landscape. I am reminded of those days when I see the Duke of Edinburgh campers hiking through my village with ruck sacks barely smaller then some of them. It’s lovely to see so many children enjoying this opportunity. As grown ups with children, creature comforts were the order of the day. I don’t just mean a posh sleeping bag here, but full on luxury chairs and bunting. We did make our rookie mistakes on the way such as turning up at the campsite with a tent and no poles or taking a gazebo with no sides to sit and eat under in a force ten gale. Our solution was to buy six windbreaks and lash them to the sides with each adult clinging on to a gazebo leg whilst trying to have a shandy or two and a game of whist. Why on earth didn’t we just pack up and go home? Mad dogs and Englishmen and all that...
we went along with them on a few trips freezing cold along side them in our old tent. We peered in at them snug and warm in their beds whilst we huddled together for warmth on the hard floor. So, we have gone half way. We have hired a camper van and I am in love. Sadly, not an old VW camper, but a new style one. The minute I saw it, there was no turning back. Now all of my plans to save for a new kitchen and carpets have been dashed. They will need to wait for a while. It’s a life on the open road for us. See you on the A303!

Gardening
Four Legged Gardening Chums Some things are just meant to be: Posh and Becks, toast and marmite, Rolls and Royce and a gardener and his or her faithful mutt. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t have a hairy sidekick “helping” me in the garden and I’m pretty sure I’m not alone in my preference for canine company as I toil away in the borders - I’m officially a rubbish “Communal” Gardener! Yes, they can be b…..y annoying and delightfully mischievous in equal measures, but you will never find a more eager companion (provided it’s not raining and there’s a good chance of snaffling a biscuit when the tea is served!) Over the years my hortihounds have come and gone – including Max the Springer and Woody the tiny Miniature Pinscher – and thankfully they were all completely unfazed by having to endure hours of boring stuff like watching me mow lawns, provided, of course, that there was a chance of sifting through a compost heap or chewing up some prunings by way of compensation. Most have been remarkably easy to train once they get over their adolecent “trash anything they can” phase, the biggest problem being to teach them the demarcation line where the lawn stops and the border starts. Short of an electric fence or minefield, some dogs never quite get the hang of this concept but, provided they don’t cause too much havoc, the odd incursion to fetch a ball isn’t too much of a problem. Currently undergoing his gardening probation period,

Ripley is my latest gardening pal and I’m very pleased to report that he has (so far!) passed all his aptitude tests with flying colours. Despite slightly lower marks for Correctly Recognising Prunings from New Plants, he has excelled in Not Digging unless Directed and Only Chasing Insects that Don’t Sting, like Bees (but only after an painful early failure!). I have great hopes for him as he does enjoy just lolling around while I get on with stuff (must be the Rotweiler in him?). I had rather hoped that he might have some some really good sniffing skills, as a few months ago I managed to lose an important piece of a watch I was foolishly wearing whilst doing some serious earth moving. Regrettably, this circular piece of titanium (worth hundreds!) hasn’t turned up, even avoiding the best efforts of the children with their metal detector, hoping to earn a fitting commission should they unearth it! There is an obvious lesson to be learned from this episode but I still live in hope that Ripley will come trotting up to me one day with the bezel of a Breitling Aerospace stuck on the end of his nose!
the BBC’s Gardeners World. Some would argue he is more interesting than his owner but, regardless of your stance on Monty, Nigel is now getting more and more air time… and he’s even got his own Twitter feed. Although clearly of prime pedigree status (which puts Ripley’s less illustrious parentage to shame), Nigel is obviously being groomed to be the Master Gardener’s breed of choice. Whether this should translate to the nation’s favourite is very debatable as there are thousands of happy gardener/ horti-hound partnerships across the country – all keen to fight the corner for their particular breed. Should it be a little terrier who would keep the plot vermin-free, a lazy Greyhound or a “dog’s home special,” happy just to have a home (and garden!) to call his or her own? You pays your money and takes your choice!
Monty Don’s dog, Nigel the Golden Retriever, is fast becoming the main star on
Jonathan Wild Master of the Gardening Hounds
I’m just about to get Ripley a new gizmo to keep him occupied during his gardening forays, an automatic bubble machine that blows out meat-flavoured bubbles. Might have a go myself… sounds delicious!

Skin and ear problems are commonly seen in affected pets. Signs may be seasonal initially, eg Spring but tend to be recurrent or longlasting (chronic). Age of onset in dogs is anything from 6months to 3 years of age though occasionally pets may be even younger when they show initial signs. Certain breeds are more commonly affected such as Labradors, Retrievers, terriers (especially Westies) and Boxers, so hereditary factors are important. Not all puppies or kittens from affected parents will show disease, as environmental and other factors an act as triggers for the condition. How Might Atopy Affect My Pet? The main signs you may notice in an affected pet are related to itching. Pets may lick, chew or scratch at affected areas and initially you may think your pet is just trying to clean the skin. However, with excessive trauma to these areas, you may notice staining of the hair from saliva (particularly in pale-coated individuals), loss of fur (alopecia) and possibly reddening of the
30
skin (inflammation) which can lead to infections. Eventually the skin may thicken and go dark (pigmentation) though this generally takes months to occur. Ear problems are commonly associated with atopic dermatitis. Head shaking, ear flapping, scratching at the ear/s, holding the head to one side, and discomfort may all be due to atopy.
to recognise and treat these can lead to misdiagnosis or unnecessary tests and treatments. Your vet will be in the best position to look for the tell-tale signs of infection.
How Can It Be Diagnosed? As many conditions can mimic atopy, it is important that your vet is able to rule out other possible causes before making this diagnosis. With itching and inflammation of the skin as a major presentation, we need to ensure that you pet has no skin parasites. Fleas and mites are often invisible, so it is crucial to ensure that your pet and any in-contact dogs or cats in the household are treated with safe and effective parasite control products. Believe me, it is a fool’s game to proceed with tests and treatments of atopic disease until this step has been fully dealt with!
Is Atopic Dermatitis Curable? In a word, No. Allergies tend to be for life, although you may notice a waxing and waning of signs in your pet, over the seasons or years. The good news is that this frustrating condition can now be effectively managed and vets have a wide range of therapies available, including tablets, lotions, shampoos, sprays and other oral supplements which can effectively prevent or treat flare-ups in this disease. Despite the incurable nature of atopy, I can assure you that observant owners who work closely with their veterinary surgeon can really make a difference when it comes to maintaining a healthy, comfortable and itch-free pet.
The second important ‘rule-out’ is skin infection. Many pets with itchy or inflamed skin and ears have secondary infections (bacteria or yeast) and again, failure
Sadly there is no single test to diagnose atopy. It is a diagnosis reached by combining careful historytaking with appropriate ruleouts, tests and treatments.

The Dreaded School Summer Holidays It is around this time every year when the DGR Law family department is very busy with its ongoing support for our Separated Parent Clients. “For what particular reason?” you make ask – “The School Holidays Contact” we reply. In our work with parents who have separated or divorced there is always a Resident Parent and a non-resident and we often have written agreements regarding the care and well-being of the children of the family. However, very often these agreements do not consider the school holidays as many parents initially concentrate on weekend and week day overnight contact. This is the time of year when school term is nearly finished and holidays abroad are being booked and when negotiations or even communication regarding contact break down. The school holidays as we know are always hard on working parents trying to juggle work and child care over the long 7-8 weeks but it is especially difficult for those parents who have the added pressure of discussing
32
and agreeing it with someone whom they no longer are married to, no longer want to be with or have just gone through a long and emotional divorce with. In the Family team we try and anticipate the inevitable and talk to our SPCs (Separated Parent Clients) in advance of this time and discuss the options for the school holidays and attempt to put some kind of plan together. Often parents have to book time off work and this has to be done in advance and we encourage them to be aware of their employment contracts and holiday conditions. There is nothing worse than promising to spend time with your children in the summer only to find out that your employer says you cannot have the time off. Children, no matter what age, do not understand the intricacies of work commitments, they only feel let down. Another consideration is the overseas summer holiday. Many Child Court proceedings are the result of a parent having had to apply for a Prohibited Steps Order which means that neither parent is not allowed to take the children out of the UK without the permission of the other parent or sometimes the Court. This occurs when perhaps one parent is not British or there have been threats of abduction. This
requires careful planning and discussion on both sides. We often come to agreement with sight of flight bookings or holiday confirmations to give the other parent peace of mind as to where their children are and when they will be returning. So, if you find yourself in a position in the next few weeks when you start to think about the “Dreaded School Holidays”, please do more than think, open the lines of communication now before it becomes a panic and a stress and doesn’t go to plan because the most disappointed and unhappy of all will be your Children. If any of the points mentioned above worry you please make an appointment to have a free 30 min consultation with the DGR Family Team. Karen Salmon, DGR Law
