Editor’s Letter In praise of fundraisers…

This month we have an article on Karen Salmon who is taking part in a 350km bike ride to raise money for women’s cancer charities, last month we met Harriet Cox who was also cycling to raise money, this time to support research into brain tumours in memory of her young son Bobby. These are just two of the many people locally who raise money for good causes, which range from funds for the local school to trying to find the cure for cancer. It is estimated that around £10 billion pounds is donated by adults each year in the UK, and a significant proportion of this will have been prompted by the fundraising efforts of others. I for one probably give more to charity each year than I would if there weren’t people running marathons, cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats, or sitting in baths of baked beans! Well done to everybody that raises funds for causes large and small - maybe one day I’ll jump out of an aeroplane for charity, but until I’m brave enough I’ll keep sponsoring those who are! Hope you enjoy this month’s magazine,

People

Gillian Smith Gillian Smith owns and runs Indulgence Beauty Salon and Clinic in Marlborough. Her husband Steven runs Marlborough Fitness and Performance Centre, where her son Leon also works as Gym Manager. The couple live in Swindon with their six Persian cats. Have you always worked in the beauty industry? No – when I left school I worked in the tax office for 10 years or so. I left when I had my son. When I was able to go back to work I went to college and studied Fashion and Design, after which I set up my own business making wedding and bridesmaids’ dresses. Although I loved it, it was difficult running that type of business from home and I decided to retrain. I studied at Swindon College and set up my own salon straight after leaving college – which was either brave or foolhardy! I think I missed out on getting salon experience and learning some of the things they don’t teach you at college – but I learnt fast and things went well. My first salon in Marlborough was above Toni and Guy about 12 years ago, and I came to my current premises around six years ago -we’re tucked away behind Lloyd’s bank.

What does Indulgence offer? We started off with traditional treatments – facials, brows, nails, waxing etc, and over the years have added the use of the latest technology for antiageing and hair removal. We also offer tanning and lash extensions. Your latest high-tech offering is Venus Freeze – tell us about that? It is a fantastic new treatment that is all the rage in Hollywood, I have clients from as far away as Bath and Bristol coming to me to use it. It is a very successful anti-ageing and body shaping treatment that is great for cellulite reduction and skin tightening. It can be used on most areas of the body, but the most popular seem to be face/ neck and what I call the “mummy tummy” It uses Radio Frequency and Pulse Electro Magnetic Fields which stimulate the production of collagen. I could give you a long complicated explanation of how it works, (and happy to explain to anyone that would like to know), but the main thing is I’ve seen some great results and some very happy customers! You also offer non-surgical aesthetic treatments We do indeed, Sharon Savage who is our therapist in that area is a Nurse Prescriber and is medically qualified to administer Botox and

dermal fillers. She has many years’ experience in these types of treatments and is happy to discuss requirements with clients with no obligation. What do you enjoy most about your job? I enjoy making people feel better about themselves, whatever their budget. I love the diversity both of treatments and people – we deal with everyone from young girls getting ready for their prom, to more mature women who want to look their best. Whether a simple brow shape and tint or a full course of anti-ageing it’s good to see people walk out of here happy. The wide variety of people I work with keeps my job interesting and fresh – and of course having been here a long time I have a lot of long standing

People clients that have become good friends. What do you like the least? I find it a bit difficult to switch off – there is so much innovation in the industry and I’m constantly researching the latest technology and treatments and thinking how best to help clients. With the advent of the internet it’s easy to take my work home with me, and sometimes I have to make myself leave it alone! What do you like to do in your spare time? I like antiques and I have some antique pieces in the salon, chairs, mirrors and marble columns which I think give it real personality. I live in a fairly modern house, but when you step through the door it’s like stepping back in time. I’m probably the only person that lives in a 2 bedroom house with 7 floor to ceiling mirrors! We enjoy visiting National Trust properties, antique showrooms and auctions – I enjoy buying at auction, although bidding is nerve-wracking – I’m OK when actually at the auction room, but have to be careful not to get carried away when buying online! I like spending time with my husband (which can be quite difficult as he works six days a week in the gym) and going for walks with my son Leon and his dog. And I suppose it should go without saying that I go to the gym when I can.

You have six cats – that’s a lot! We love them! They all started from the same line of a Persian cat we rescued from Bristol. I hoped to become a breeder but couldn’t bear to be parted from any of the kittens, hence we ended up with so many. We wanted to ensure my original cat’s lineage continued, and have one breeding queen left. Our Persian cats are cream and red (ginger) and are very friendly and great company. They take up some of my spare time too!

fascinating. I also love all the nooks and crannies there are in Marlborough, little unexpected alleys and courtyards – it can be surprising what is around a corner.

Are you having a Summer Holiday this year? We’re having our first holiday in 7 years to Malta. As we both run our own businesses it’s very difficult to get away - especially as Steven’s business is still establishing itself. I’m very excited about it, even though we are only going for 4 nights. We have a very kind neighbour who is going to look after the cats.

Where do you like to eat out? Locally I enjoy Silks on the Downs, but we travel quite far and wide to eat out. We enjoy going to Tetbury and Cirencester for instance, and in Swindon we like the Weighbridge and The Old Bank.

What do you like most about Marlborough? I love the way it is steeped in history – I like to think of all the people that have been in this building over the several hundred years it has been here for instance. The Merchant’s House is a great place to visit because it gives you a sense of all the people that have gone before and a good feel of how the buildings were when they were built. We had a tour recently and I found it absolutely

What do you enjoy reading? I’ll read a very wide range of books from Thomas Hardy (I’m a big fan of all his books) to the latest girly holiday read. I am quite partial to a good period romance. I’ve recently read The King’s Curse by Philippa Gregory which I thoroughly enjoyed.

What’s your pet hate/ nomination for Room 101? Cold callers that are just recorded messages selling PPI claims or renewable energy and so on drive me mad. We get them every day, and as we are a business we have to answer the phone every time – they are annoying and distracting! Richard and Judy for Vanessa Summertime, the debut novel from Marlborough’s own Vanessa Lafaye continues to go from strength to strength. The paperback of her critically acclaimed novel set in Florida during the 1930s has been chosen as one of Richard and Judy’s Book Club titles for this Summer. Standing out from the crowd is important for books to succeed, especially for a debut author, and this will ensure that Vanessa’s novel is at the front of every WHSmith in the country. Vanessa is delighted to be chosen, “As a debut author, getting your book noticed seems like the hardest job in the world, after writing the thing in the first place. There are so many millions of books out there (4m paperbacks on Amazon alone), all clamouring for attention. So when a great big media machine decides to pluck your book from the herd, it’s absolutely incredible. I’m so lucky and grateful that ‘Summertime’ was chosen as a Richard & Judy Summer Read, along with only seven others. Some of those are very well-established, like David Nicholls and Nick

10

Hornby. Others are firsttimers like me. It has given my book the most enormous boost, just in time for the summer holiday season—so you should see it at all the airports as you fly off between now and September. And of course, it’s on a very nice display inside WHSmith in Marlborough.”

Is Green the colour of the future? Last month St John’s held a mock election, to coincide with the General Election.

Five Sixth Form students at St John’s Marlborough stood as candidates representing the five main parties, and over the previous few weeks had been campaigning to students across the school. All St John’s students, from Year 7 to Year 13, voted on the Tuesday and Wednesday before the General Election, and the results were interesting. Whilst the overall result was in line with the General Election, with the Conservative Party the clear winner with 29% of the vote, amongst Sixth Form students the Green Party came out as the clear winner with 40% of the vote (and 23% amongst the whole school) Obviously St John’s students are not representative of the population as a whole, but

the result possibly reflects the growing popularity of the Green Party amongst young people. Is this a sign of things to come?

A Doggy Day for Aldbourne! As part of the Aldbourne’s 100th Carnival celebrations, the very first Aldbourne Doggy Day will take place on Sunday 30 August in Woodley Meadow, West St, Aldbourne. A fun day out for everyone who loves dogs, pedigree or not, the event will feature: a fun dog show, variety of stalls, doggy games and races, a raffle, parade of dogs looking for their forever homes and much more! There will be prizes and rosettes, trophies and cups, a biscuit for all entrants and fun for all. The bar will be open and this may help participants entering the eleven-legged race (a three-legged race where each participant also has a dog on a lead!). All profits will be split between Aldbourne Carnival and Swindon’s Needy Dogs. The organisers are looking for help with raffle prizes and donations, sponsorship for some classes, helpers on the day and beforehand. If you think you may be able to help at all, please get in touch. For more information see the website

Farewell to...

We bid farewell to Town Mayor, Cllr Marian HannafordDobson, as she passes the role onto her successor, Councillor Margaret Rose. Her mayoral year has been a busy one with a Civic War Re-enactment on the Common, the Visit of HRH The Duke of Kent, Marlborough’s success with its first entry into South West in Bloom and more. It has also seen the installation of CCTV in the High Street, something Councillor Hannaford-Dobson has long campaigned for. Together with her husband and consort, Councillor Stewart Dobson, she has attended just under 100 civic and other events and donated around £5,000 to her charitable causes - Leukaemia Research and Macmillan Nursing. Our thanks go to both of them.

Welcome to…

Our new Mayor, Councillor Margaret Rose, was elected on Monday, 18 May at the Town Council’s traditional Mayor Making ceremony at the Town Hall. She has lived in the area for more than 35 years and has been a Town Councillor for 13 of them. Formerly a Dame

at Marlborough College, Councillor Rose takes a real interest in environmental and restoration projects throughout the town and has recently been spearheading one to restore the Old Victorian Cemetery at Frees Avenue. A cause close to her heart is the Brain Tumour Charity which she will be supporting for her mayoral year. Her daughter, Mary Garner, will be her Mayoress. Councillor Barrett-Morton has been elected as Deputy Mayor.

Marlborough in Bloom

There will be a fresh feel to the High Street and its environs as the Town Council takes on a citrus-inspired theme for its floral displays and the MiB committee is hoping that, following their fabulous efforts in 2014, businesses and shops will follow this through with their own displays too. The committee is working towards a judging route that will give a real focus to our Town Centre enabling our judges to look at how residents, businesses and retailers work as a community to show Marlborough at its best. The judging day has yet to be confirmed but has been provisionally booked for 14th July. There has been lots of business and community participation already – thanks go especially to volunteers from Waitrose who helped with a Community Clear-Up

on 15 May. Watch out for other opportunities to help towards this year’s entry.

Cooper’s Meadow Meeting The Town Council is in the process of taking on Cooper’s Meadow from Wiltshire Council as a Community Asset Transfer and is keen that the community has its say on how the meadow is run. A User Group is being established and the first meeting will take place in the Council Chamber of the Town Hall on Wednesday, 24th June at 1.30pm. All welcome.

Karen heads for Kilimanjaro to raise funds for Women v Cancer Local lawyer Karen Salmon of DGR Law Marlborough is facing her biggest charity challenge yet – a stunning 350km ride across Tanzania, starting in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro and finishing at the impressive Ngorongoro Crater. Raising funds for Women v Cancer, Karen is aiming to raise in excess of £3000. Karen first took up cycling in May 2012 after her doctor suggested it as good exercise after she had a hip replaced after being treated for a bone tumour, and last year she took part in Ride the Night, a women only 100km bike ride around London. With the 2 thousand other women that took part, Karen helped raise over £1m for Women v Cancer’s 3 great charities:- Breast Cancer Care, Ovarian Cancer Action and Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust. Karen is taking part in Ride the Night again this year as part of her training and

break in the morning and lunch. “The final day is a 38km stretch uphill to the Ngorongoro crater – talk about saving the best til last!” laughs Karen.

build up to the Cycle Africa ride which takes place in October. “This year I am doing it with my daughter Charlotte, the youngest rider at age 17, which should make it fun. We’re aiming to beat my time of 5 hrs 22mins, which should be doable as last year I had to stop and fix a flat tyre!” Karen expects the October ride to be more challenging “As well as the distance, there will be heat and altitude to deal with” she says “The ride takes place over 6 days, I should be OK with the heat as I grew up in the Caribbean, though I’m not sure what effect the altitude will have. Cycles are provided, but everyone takes their own saddle (for obvious reasons!)” The 80 women taking part will spend around eight hours in the saddle every day, stopping only for a quick

Karen is doing the ride with a good friend, Mandy Mander, and the pair have been training together. “We both have very personal reasons for taking part, and we are very keen to raise awareness of the charities concerned as well as funds. Ovarian and cervical cancer particularly are curable if caught early, so if we can raise awareness of the importance of knowing the signs and making sure women attend regular smear tests we will be very happy” “I’m really looking forward to meeting all the other women taking part and hearing their stories which are often inspiring as most people taking part have either lost someone or survived cancer themselves. I think the camaraderie and support we’ll give each other is what will see us though. I’ll be thrilled if I’m not last – otherwise I just want to finish the ride.” To help Karen meet her fundraising target by the end of July visit the website she and Mandy have set up

Classic Cars

Jaguar XJS Once the province of flat cap wearing “enthusiasts,” classic cars are now hugely popular with prices rocketing upwards. The rarest, most collectible cars are now the province of the super-rich but, if you know what you’re looking for, you can pick up a gem that will provide you with hours of enjoyable motoring and still make you a hefty profit when you sell it on. My first selection is the Jaguar XJS, a grand tourer launched in 1975 as the replacement to the iconic E Type. The E Type, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cars ever made, was always going to be a tough act to follow and the controversial styling of the XJS, particularly the “flying buttress” C pillars, did not meet with critical acclaim. To make matters worse, by 1975 Jaguar had fallen into the hands of the hopelessly incompetent British Leyland; as a result, the early cars suffered from appalling build quality and reliability problems. Just to add to its woes, the launch coincided with the oil crisis and demand for hugely thirsty V12s fell through the floor. Yet despite all this, the XJS stayed in production for 21 years and over 115,000 examples were sold. Surely, Jaguar must have got something right. In truth they got a whole lot of things right. The styling might

34

have been controversial in the 70s but it has stood the test of time. Long, low and wide with a sculpted bonnet and those iconic 8 sided headlights, the XJS remains sleek, powerful and handsome. It was never conceived as a sports car like the E Type, rather it was meant to be a grand tourer with continent crossing ability and it does the job brilliantly. The magnificent 5.3 litre V12 is arguably the smoothest engine ever made and it produces an endless surge of torque that delivers effortless performance. Later versions kicked out 300bhp, good for a top speed of over 150mph. The straight six engine is no slouch either and the fuel economy is a lot more palatable. The XJS, particularly the V12, is eerily quiet and possesses the magic carpet ride that Jaguar used to do so well but has now lost the knack of. The handling is predictable and tenacious, the interior is sumptuous and supremely comfortable and the boot is big enough for a week’s luggage – truly this is a grand tourer of the old school. So which one should you buy? Forget about anything pre 1986; the quality problems will be overwhelming although, thankfully, few of these cars still survive. The next thing to consider is that out of 115,000 cars made, less than 5,000 of them were convertibles.

The convertibles have rarity value and this is already being reflected in the price they change hands for; as an investment, they are a much better bet than the coupé. The convertible is also a much better looking car and is far more desirable. Jaguar only started producing them in 1988 and there was a facelift in June 1991 which, to my eye, made for a much less attractive car so you have a three year window to work with. There is a choice of a 5.3 litre V12 or 4.0 litre straight six engines. Either one offers all the performance you need but if the car is not your daily drive, and it shouldn’t be, I’d go for the V12, both for the wonderful noise and the silky refinement. As for the colour, the metallic versions of navy blue and British racing green are best, though red is fine. Cream or oatmeal are the best colours for the upholstery and, naturally, the dash should be walnut. Entry level money for a slightly ratty convertible with reasonable mileage is £6-7k but remember that the minters at the top of the market are going for £20,000 or more. Restoration prices are very reasonable because the parts are cheap and plentiful. Go and treat yourself to a V12 XJS convertible; you won’t regret it for even a second. Kit Johnson

Gardening

June in the Garden As midsummer has arrived the garden should be full of colour and interest. Now most of the hard work of preparing the garden is done midsummer is the time to take full advantage of any good weather. It’s really a matter of maintenance at this time of year. Weeds will be growing quickly now so carry out some regular hoeing to prevent weed seedlings establishing and dig out larger weeds by hand. Keeping weeds under control not only keeps the borders looking their best but it also prevents them from taking nutrients and water away from your plants. Applying a thick layer of bark mulch on the border will help to smother weeds and retain moisture cutting down on maintenance. Any newly plants shrubs, perennials and bedding plants whether in the border or in containers will need regularly watering. If there is no significant rain, water borders weekly and containers daily. Container plants will also need feeding through the growing season so either apply a liquid feed weekly when watering or put some slow release feed tablets in each container. Containers can also be mulched with bark or gravel to retain moisture.

36

Spring flowering Primulas that have become congested can be dug up, split into smaller plants and replanted for next years display and flag irises that have finished flowering can also be split and replanted to increase stocks. Continue to stake tall growing perennials as they grow and start to regularly deadhead flowers from perennials and bedding plants to prolong and increase flowering. Hardy geraniums can be cut back after flowering to encourage a further display later in the season. Climbing plants will need to be tied in weekly as they can soon grow out of control. Roses should be fed with a rose fertilizer and cut back any suckers sprouting from the base of the plant to ground level to prevent energy being sucked away from the main plant. Keep an eye out for pests and diseases as these can rapidly take hold at this time of year, keeping plants healthy in the first place will help to prevent pests and disease becoming a problem but if you do notice things like

black spot, mildew or green or blackly infestations deal with them immediately with a suitable organic spray from the garden centre. Lawns should be mown at least once a week now and if the weather is hot and dry raise the blade setting to help the lawn stay greener. Trimming the edges of your lawn will improve the appearance of your garden and also feed your lawn regularly to maintain health. In the vegetable garden, start to harvest as plants mature and regularly sowings to maintain supplies. Tender crops like tomatoes, basil, corinader and runner beans can be planted outside and winter brassicas can be also be sown. Ensure your greenhouse is kept well ventilated and shaded in hot weather. Keep ponds, water features and bird baths topped up as they can quickly lose water in dry weather and sit back to enjoy your summer garden. Jill Blackwood T: 01793 340063 M: 07951 014119

Claims for poor building work Almost everyone who owns a building will have had to have building works carried out to some extent or other and while the majority of works are completed to a reasonable standard, many are not, causing delay, stress and financial loss to clients. Potential claims break down into two often overlapping areas; contract and negligence. The size of the project will usually dictate the formality of contract in place. In small projects the contract will be simple, for larger projects the JCT contract is regularly used, or where architects are involved there may well be a form of RIBA agreement. The reality is that all of these contracts have their strengths and weaknesses in protecting the respective parties. With regards to negligence, construction professionals are under a duty of care to take reasonable skill and care in the provision of their services. The contract will provide useful evidence as to what was agreed, but overall the merit of any negligence claim is something that needs to be carefully considered before proceeding. Building projects require the input of multiple people, this can lead to arguments as to blame, which requires expert evidence. The most

38

commonly encountered construction professionals are as follows:

Architects Architects are those who design and plan building projects. Architect is a protected term and many professionals provide an architectural service without being qualified architects. Potential claims can arise where there has been a failure to prepare proper drawings, give proper costings, and gain necessary planning and building regulation approvals, or a building having defects.

Building Surveyors They also undertake design work, but are primarily concerned with inspecting buildings to ascertain if works are done in compliance with building regulations, as such they are used when people purchase properties, however, they should not be confused with the valuation surveys required by mortgage lenders. Failures to disclose defects in a property can give rise to a claim against a building surveyor.

Quantity Surveyors The accountants of the construction industry, they price building projects and negotiate with contractors when tendering. As a result, claims against them are usually only concerned with estimates, procurement, the calculation of the sums involved and the timescales of projects.

Structural Engineers Structural engineers analyse and design structures from architect’s plans which will work and be structurally sound through the use of practically applied physics. The structural engineers’

calculations are important in gaining building regulations approval. Potential claims may arise for errors in their calculations or analysis leading to a building having defects.

Building contractors The builders, while not being professionals per se, are still required to exercise reasonable skill and care. They should build the property in accordance with the engineer’s and architect’s plans, a quantity surveyor’s pricing and comply with building regulations. Defects are the main cause of claims against builders. It is also important to note that not every error will amount to negligence, the standard of reasonable skill and care is measured by the ordinary standards of the profession and not the highest standards. It is therefore very important to seek legal advice on a claim before proceeding. Alex Atkins DGR Law 01672 511797
