Let’s hope it stays around a while! As I write the sun is shining, and there’s not a cloud in the sky. It is entirely possible that by the time you are reading it is pouring with rain and freezing! Jo Waltham Jo Waltham runs Callia Web, a locally based digital agency specialising in WordPress websites. She lives with her husband David, their two children, Charlie, 14, and Marie, 10, and their two dogs Hamish and Tess in Marlborough. Tell us about yourself I was born in Essex, but mostly grew up in Hampshire. I went to Keele University in North Staffordshire and studied for a degree in Geography/Geology. My ambition was to be a retail buyer, with the aim of having my own shop one day, so when I left I went to work at Harrods, as a sales assistant, hoping to move on to the graduate trainee scheme. I discovered it wasn’t right for me and decided to rethink. I decided to go back to Uni and take a Master’s in Computing and Earth Science back at Keele University. This was in the early 90s, and the internet was still in it’s fledgling stages. I was a complete beginner in computing, so much so I had trouble turning my computer on in that first lesson! I soon got the hang of things and did a lot of programming. The course was very male dominated with only one other woman, but I didn’t really mind that. Following that I worked at Royal Holloway, University of London as a postgraduate research assistant for a couple of years. Then I moved to Ireland to work on a PhD on the computer modelling of Icelandic volcanoes. As part of that I organised a student expedition to Iceland which was an experience I will never forget. When I came back to the UK, I became the IT manager of a company working in the Oil and Gas Industry, where I stayed for 11 years. By this time I was married with two young children. How was Callia Web born? I had always wanted to run my own business, but just hadn’t taken the leap. My mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and I looked after her while she was ill. Among many

I remember when I was a child thinking how amazing it was that he had created something that employed so many people. conversations we had she said to me to realise that life is short, and that if there was anything I really wanted to do I should just do it and not keep putting it off. This was the push I needed to leave my job and create my own company. I had always hankered after a retail business, and so set up an online shop selling baby clothes and equipment. This led me into the community of women (mostly mums) running their own small businesses. I often gave advice on their IT issues, and helped build their websites. One day someone suggested that perhaps that was what I should be doing for a living, and I realised that I enjoyed it more than running the shop. So I sold the shop and started a new business. After 18 months I incorporated that business and rebranded to Callia Web reflecting that most of the work I was doing was web development. The business has grown over the past few years, and I now have a co-director in the company, Leeann Stevenson.

People What exactly does Callia Web do? We are a small WordPress agency building websites for small to medium businesses, bloggers etc. We work at various budget levels, from simple start up sites, through to custom built sites for more established businesses. We also provide ongoing support. Do you specialise in any industry? No, we work across the board, although we do have a bit of a niche in Food, which started almost by accident. I met a food blogger called Katie on holiday, and while chatting to her discovered that she wanted to improve her site, but hadn’t met anyone she trusted enough to do it for her. I ended up helping her out, and she was pleased with what I had done. Turns out the Food world is very interconnected, and Katie recommended us to others, and work expanded through word of mouth – from bloggers to cafés to restaurants and chefs. A big part of what we do is understanding our clients’ clients, and food is an enjoyable area to work in as we have a head start – everybody has to eat! One of the advantages of working digitally is that we can work with anyone, anywhere – we have clients as far afield as Japan, the US and South America. This is great, but we also make an effort to help local businesses – it’s good to meet people face to face. Do you have any projects you are particularly proud of? We were thrilled to win an award for the website we created for The Cambridge
Food Collective a couple of years ago. It was a complicated challenge involving multiple vendors on one site. We won a gold and a silver medal in two different categories in the Cambridgeshire Digital Awards. We also revamped the website for Avenue Nursery, who have a number of locations in the area. Leeann came up with an unusual colour palette as part of their design, to reflect the rural nature of their nurseries. I also enjoyed working with Justine Pattison a food author and TV chef to create her website – she has a very interesting range of work that needed to be showcased on her site. What do you enjoy most about your work? I love getting to understand someone’s business, getting to the nitty gritty of what they need their website to accomplish for them. I find it fascinating learning what makes them tick. I do also enjoy that feeling when a particularly knotty programming problem is solved. (Someone once described coding as 99% frustration and 1% glee. I certainly identify with that!) What do you find a challenge? Planning workflow can be a real challenge sometimes – as you never know when new work is going to come in, whether clients might have delays, or a support client may have an issue. Juggling is an important skill to have! Luckily we have developers we can call on if we need to.
Who was your inspiration? My dad is definitely the person that inspired me to have my own business. I remember when I was a child thinking how amazing it was that he had created something that employed so many people. He instilled in me the desire to have my own business one day. What do you like to do when you are not working? I don’t get a lot of spare time, and enjoy spending it with the family and the dogs. I enjoy a nice walk followed by a pub lunch or a nice cup of tea and a cake in a café. I also like to get involved in local politics, and am on the Executive Committee of the Liberal Democrats for the Devizes constituency. I took more interest after the EU referendum, and campaigned for the Lib Dems during the run up to the last election. The Brexit vote has already had a detrimental effect on our small business, and I am worried about how it will affect the wider economy once we actually leave the EU. My guilty pleasure is watching Soaps – mainly Coronation St and Eastenders. Slightly work related, I enjoy being part of the wider WordPress community. I go to WordCamps (WordPress conferences) in the UK and Europe 2-3 times a year, where I keep up to date with what is going on, and get to meet others working in the same area. Mantonfest is back! The local music festival held at Manton Grange Watermeadow is back for it’s eighth year on 30 June. A great family festival, this year the headline acts are Katrina of the Waves and Whole Lotta Led, along with perennial favourites The Swinging Blue Jeans. Roger Grant, one of the organisers of the festival says “From small beginnings it has now become well established and is able to hire professional bands with well-known names, whilst still continuing to give local bands an opportunity to play on the big stage. “The basic idea of starting MantonFest was to raise money for charity, and the upkeep of Manton Village Hall, which we have achieved. In addition, we have made an event that is family friendly, where children can run around in the water meadow whilst their parents are listening to good music and partaking in a variety of food and drinks. This year’s event is going to support local charities who look after the elderly and those suffering from Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. We’re looking forward to good weather and a great turnout, all are welcome!”

This year’s event is going to support local charities who look after the elderly and those suffering from Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. We’re looking forward to good weather and a great turnout, all are welcome!” Having won Gold last year, the Marlborough Bloomers are gearing up for another successful Judging Day on Tuesday 10 July. Steve Pascall, the new Chairman, has toured the High Street shops hoping to inspire them to fill the town with flowers. “We have had an excellent response”, said Steve. “Everyone is keen to join in; community participation is very important and we are working hard to transform parks and open spaces, care for allotments, work with children and plant almost everything conceivable in both likely and improbable places.” Marlborough in Bloom is due to appear on BBC2’s Britain in Bloom, which will be aired next year. A television crew will track the efforts of volunteers to transform the town with flowers and, of course, enhance wildlife habitats and create a cleaner, greener environment. This year’s theme is “Birds” and everyone is encouraged to join in. As in previous years there will be school involvement and a Gardening Competition sponsored by Henry George. New Rohan Shop in Hillier’s Yard Clothing brand Rohan’s new stand alone shop opens in Hillier’s Yard (where Ducklings used to be) on 24 May. Brand Development Manager Becky Serieys says “The difference between Rohan and other clothing brands is just one word – extra. That’s the difference between ordinary and extraordinary. Sometimes it can be hard to spot because Rohan benefits are often hidden – the clothing is designed to fit in rather than stand out. The formula is simple but clever; take classic looking styles and reinvents them using the latest fabric technology and pack in clever features. This allows you to thrive anywhere in the world – whether walking the White Horse Trail or exploring Machu Picchu.” You can contact the shop on 01672 513084

How Desert Island Discs can help organise your memories I love listening to Desert Island Discs and hearing the records that mark the passage of time through someone’s life. I marvel at how guests choose only eight records, one book, a luxury and the final challenge of a single record. When I consider the things my clients save there are wonderful tales of special events and life changing moments. Both happy and more poignant times for us to savour. But, we can’t keep it all. The ‘stuff’ is not the memory – merely the trigger. So, how do we sort out what to keep? I use a ‘Desert Island Disc’ structure to produce a memory management system: Disc 1 – someone else’s memory reminders. Would you allow someone else to substitute in their own record choice? Don’t become the guardian of other people’s memories! This includes your children! Disc 2 – childhood. Following on from above, which of your own early years masterpieces do you really want to keep? Disc 3 – cards/personal letters/emails/ records of past jobs. Let go of the painful ones – give more room to the happy ones Disc 4 – knick-knacks. By decluttering, you can save up to 40% of your housework time.
Disc 5 – ticket stubs/the funny Smurf you got when you were eight. For your eyes only - be selective. Disc 6 – old bank statements. Note the bank account, keep the opening and closing statements. This should cover you if there is ever another PPI type situation. Disc 7 – photos. One of the most important to get right. They hold the power to not only be a memory for you but other people too. You are given Shakespeare and the Bible on your desert island and I view these as articles of family importance and so require discussion. Books. Many people really value their books but, realistically, when are you really going to re-read that paperback you bought for your beach holiday 10 years ago again? The luxury – your personal self-indulgence! There are lots of wonderful ways to store your memories - boxes, photo books, scrapbooks, even apps for artwork. To enjoy your memories, clear away the clutter and spend time on your own personal desert island enjoying the most important ones. Sammy Ryan, Strictly Organised Contact Sammy (details below) for guidance on how to reach your Desert Island.

Welcome to our new Mayor
groups and works full time at Marlborough College too. A real example to us all. Councillor Farrell has chosen to support no fewer than seven local causes during her Mayoral year - Preshute School, Marlborough St Mary’s School, The Findlay Foundation, New Road Day Centre, Macmillan Cancer and Kennet Community Transport. We wish our new Mayor every success for the coming year.
Annual Report On Monday, 14th May, the Town Hall played host to the High Sheriff of Wiltshire, Mrs Nicky Alberry and many past Mayors and guests to witness Town Councillors officially elect the new Town Mayor of Marlborough - Councillor Lisa Farrell. During the traditional Mayor Making ceremony she presented her consort, her son, Bryan Rumbold (a serving police officer), with his consort’s badge. A really proud family moment. Our new Town Mayor is totally committed to working with the community and has a very strong track record in campaigning for local causes. Many will remember her drive, in 2009, towards making sure that more affordable shopping came to Marlborough and, not long after, Tesco opened up at the business park. Lisa joined the Council in 2013 and quickly learnt the ropes, gaining the support of her fellow Councillors. For example, she was a key player in the Council taking on the former Youth Centre, closed a couple of years ago by Wiltshire Council. The building was refurbished and transformed into the Marlborough Community & Youth Centre. On top of her work with the Council, she supports many local voluntary

20mph Speed Restrictions Consultation Feedback Thank you to all those who took the time to participate in our recent public consultation about 20mph speed restrictions in parts of Marlborough. All responses have been collected and collated and brought together in a report which is available on our website at www.marlborough-tc.gov.uk. At an Extraordinary Full Council
meeting on 30 April, Town Councillors considered this feedback and voted in favour of recommending to Wiltshire Council’s Community Area Transport Group (CATG) that 20mph speed restrictions are put in place in the full qualifying areas of Marlborough with the addition of 20mph roundels on St Martins and Kingsbury Street. This was in line with the overall feedback to the consultation exercise.
4th Military Intelligence Battalion A big thank you to the soldiers of 4th Military Intelligence Battalion (4MI) who came to the Town Hall on 18 April. On a hot day they completed 12 High Intensity Fitness Circuits over the course of just 6 hours and raised over £1,000 to support Julia’s House, Home Start Kennet and the Army Benevolent Fund. They were back on 1 May to play a charity football match against Marlborough Town Football Club, winning 3 – 2 in a very close game. We’ll be welcoming them back for another sporting fixture - the Mayor’s Charity Cricket Match - on 18 July

On my desert island.. I have mused before about reality shows and the general chaos that ensues when people forget that they have cameras on them. We often watch and shout at the TV thinking that we can do better. I do, although I know that I couldn’t really do better as I’d miss too many people and too many creature comforts. What if I was allowed the luxury of my own style of “Desert island discs” then? Being a lawyer, I’d be constantly caveating my list, of course “well, I’d need matches” and, “I’d need water purifiers” “and loo roll and sun cream and…and..and..” So, taking for granted that there will be a shipping container of the basics behind the scenes, what little luxuries will I pick? My favourite food would have to be the one that takes me right back to my 70s childhood. It was the era of home dinner parties and it always felt great to get a little taste of my Mum’s Boeuf Stroganoff (ooh, how posh) and her pineapple soufflé. Whilst I have had many other happy and memorable meals, this combines my favourite tastes as well as happy memories. I’d have to have a drink with that of course. What to choose, should it be a Babycham – my first sip of alcohol permitted by my parents, or should it be a pint of cider and black to remind me of my university days? No, my choice of alcoholic drink would be a refreshing Mojito and non-alcoholic would be an elderflower cordial with sparkling mineral water. The cordial would be homemade as this would remind me of trips with my husband around our village to pick the elderflower heads and then coming home and making huge jam pans of cordial. So satisfying. What would I do with my time? Easy. In my shipping container, I’d have access to all of the craft materials I’d need (even a potter’s wheel and kiln perhaps). Then I’d have access to the internet and a constant charge on my tablet to watch instructional videos on how to craft. That would be bliss, and think of how well furnished
14
my island home would be as well as being the best dressed Girl Friday. Music is important to me, so in true form, I’d have to pick some tracks that mean something to me. “Mr Brightside” would be my go to dance song (maybe with a couple of disco albums thrown in for good measure and to mix it up). Blue Monday by New Order covers off my late teens, a bit of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons for relaxing and imagining my garden at home, a musical soundtrack choice would be Oliver as it’s great to sing to and for good measure, let’s have Mumford and Sons. A perfect reminder of the simple things, and dancing around the kitchen to the banjo playing with my children when they were little (not that you’d catch them doing it now –“ sooo embarrassing!”). Taking my treadmill with me also allows me to take my favourite TV show with me as I often prop my tablet on the machine and watch my guilty pleasure show whilst running. Nope, you won’t guess. It’s nothing with a pounding beat to run to – it is, in fact “Escape to the Country”. So I will be keeping fit and, at the same time, looking at beautiful houses in the Great British countryside. It’s been fun to think of what I’d take as it all comes back to evoking memories of happy times. Modern mindfulness perhaps, but I think I would be very content on my little island. Hypnotherapy and Hypnobirthing What is Hypnotherapy? Most of us only ever see Hypnosis on Television where it is portrayed as something to be laughed at or feared, most notably in Disney’s The Jungle Book where the slippery snake Kaa sets his sights on Mowgli as his next meal, he aims to send him and his protector Bagheera to sleep with his Hypnotic swirling eyes. They escape from harm as Mowgli pushes the snake from the tree and slaps Bagheera around the face to bring him back to his conscious state! Similar depictions of Hypnosis are used time and time again, this perception is completely wrong. Hypnosis is quite simply a deep relaxation, both mentally and physically, and it gives us the same feeling that we have every morning when we are waking up and every night just as we are falling asleep, when our bodies feel so comfortable and so relaxed that we just can’t be bothered to move. Most importantly you remain in control of what is happening to your body, you are simply led into relaxation by your therapist. When we are in this state we are very open to suggestion and new learning and that can be incredibly useful. So whilst relaxing in a chair, for a session of Hypnotherapy, listening to your therapist, and taking a break from your day, you can overcome fears and phobias, you can end cravings and addictions and eliminate fear of anything, from exams to spiders, flying or even job interviews. You can prepare your mind and body for academic or sporting challenges, chemotherapy, and even childbirth. The list is endless and what is so great is that those changes can be permanent and have a profound impact on your life. After an hour long session of Hypnotherapy clients leave feeling relaxed, happy and confident to take on the challenges that they have. HypnoBirthing: When our mind accepts a suggestion our body follows, when we are afraid this creates tension in the body and that tension leads to pain. It is important to realise that we are unable to hold opposing thoughts at the same time; hence affirming a positive thought creates a positive outcome. When a woman entertains only positive images of birthing she creates a positive mindset, thus preparing her
16
for a positive birthing. Thoughts that are imprinted into the subconscious mind can and do create biochemical responses in the body. When we are afraid our sympathetic nervous system is kicked into action, putting the body on alert. This instantly creates the fight or flight response. Our blood flows to our arms and legs to protect ourselves. Needless to say that when the blood from the uterus is directed to other parts of the body, the uterus doesn’t function as it should and labour goes on for a lot longer and is more painful. The HypnoBirthing course uses relaxation, breathing, visualisation, massage and deepening techniques to empower pregnant women and their partners and bring about a safer, calmer and more comfortable birthing experience. A mother’s experience: “The breathing helped me cope with the pain of contractions and I remained calm throughout – so calm that my husband didn’t believe I was having a baby at all. After 10 hours at home (which felt much shorter for me) we left for the hospital, where I arrived already 10cm dilated.” Kari, mum to Scarlett. A father’s story: “Thanks to HypnoBirthing our birth experience was joyous, and pain was managed without drugs, despite complications that resulted in a long labour. People can be sceptical of HypnoBirthing because it goes against all the scare stories that people perpetuate about giving birth, but the female body was designed to give birth and HypnoBirthing teaches you how to work with your body.” James, dad to Hunter. Hannah Hatherell, BA (hons) DCH, GHR, HypnoBirthing Practitioner® 07968 191115, www.naturalhypnotherapy.co.uk The next HypnoBirthing course at The Wellbeing Clinic starts on 5 July and runs for 5 weeks, every Tuesday evening at 7pm. www.thewellbeingclinic.org 01672 513583

Not all mortgage lenders are the same In years gone by the major banks and building societies all had very similar lending criteria and there was very little difference in their product ranges. With new lenders joining the mortgage marketplace, some with highly innovative products, it means that the choice of lender is more important than ever before. Whilst the days of the local branch manager being allowed to make lending decisions are probably never to return, we are seeing many of the new lenders allowing greater flexibility in their lending criteria. The big high street lenders still however want to play safe with very strict lending criteria, which means their computers rather than humans drive the lending decisions. Admittedly, some of these traditional mortgage lenders have reacted with innovation of their own but unfortunately many of the volume lenders just look to cut costs to protect their profit margins. Lenders will always attract business just because their interest rate is 0.1% lower than the competition but we are finding more and more that service standards will slip as a result. I hear reports of it taking up to a month to see a mortgage adviser at some major high street banks and even when the applications are submitted, the workload of underwriters mean that in many cases, arranging a mortgage is no longer a quick matter. As an independent mortgage adviser, I submit applications across many lenders and my list of those not to deal with if you are in a hurry just seems to get longer. I mentioned that we are seeing more innovation in the marketplace, both as a result of the demands of today’s borrowers and as a result of the new lenders looking for their ‘niche’. An increasing proportion of my clients’ mortgage needs require me to think a little out of the traditional box these days; perhaps due to employment situations, property types or borrowing requirement. For many clients, a single predictable regular income is no longer the norm. Flexible
22
working patterns, multiple income streams or a high proportion of variable earnings are not things which the computer led lenders can cope with, but a lot more scenarios are possible when lenders have real people assessing cases. It is a myth that lenders will not lend on properties with more than an acre of land, that thatched properties are un-mortgageable or that you cannot get a loan on a property with a second kitchen, most things are possible if you know where to place an application. The most interesting and rewarding part of my work is the time I spend on these ‘out of the ordinary’ mortgages. As well as knowing which lender will consider a particular mortgage scenario, a major benefit of using a mortgage broker is that they will know how best to present the case to a lender in the most favourable light to get that positive decision. Garden Hazards This time of year is great for those green fingered amongst us. However, for our furry friends the garden can be a dangerous place if we are not sure what to keep an eye out for. If like many, you use pellets to keep those pesky slugs at bay, ensure that they are Metaldehyde free. If dogs and cats ingest Metaldehyde it can be deadly. Metaldehyde can be found in slug pellets and some fuel packs for camping stoves. The effects are very quick to take hold. Often within 30 minutes a variety of signs can be seen such as muscle spasms and these can progress to seizures, fever, panting and respiratory distress. Ingestion of slug pellets requires rapid and aggressive treatment. Inducing vomiting is often an option for a Veterinarian but may not be beneficial if signs of poisoning are already showing. Seizures are also a side effect of ingesting slug pellets, and if this is the case the animal may require prolonged treatement. Rat poison is also very dangerous to our pets. They work by affecting the vermins ability to clot its blood and will do the same to our pets. There are many forms of rat poison, and if your animal is exposed it is important that if you have the information on the packaging
24
available, to bring it with you to your Vet, including the type of product used. They can be ingested primarily by your pet, or secondarily by eating an affected rat or mouse. If presented early enough it can be advisable to induce vomiting to empty the stomach but the more information gathered the better as, sometimes, the change in the blood being unable to clot will present in very small ways. Animals can be treated by varying amounts of Vitamin K dependant on the initial drug exposure but if left untreated this can become life threatening. As with all emergency situations, ensure that you are with a Veterinary practice that provides 24 Hour Emergency care and ensure you contact them as soon as you think your animal may have eaten some to ensure the best possbile care can be given.
