Editor’s Letter On the Road to Rio
No, not me – this month’s interviewee, Louise Hunt, who is one of the world’s top wheelchair tennis players. I met up with her for our article on pages 6/7, and was incredibly impressed with her approach to life. As well as being a determined athlete, all but confirmed as heading for Rio to represent Team GB in the Paralympics, she is a brilliant ambassador for young people in general. When not competing Louise spends a lot of time working with young people from more disadvantaged backgrounds both in this country and abroad. She also works as a motivational speaker helping people reach their potential through planning for success, setting goals and following through. I expect she’s very good at it, as after meeting her I left feeling much more motivated myself! I really admire her determination to increase awareness of the fact that just because someone is disabled that doesn’t mean they can’t become an elite athlete. Good luck in Rio, Louise! As well as Louise’s story we have loads of interest this month – from how to look good for Summer, through to how to keep your pets flea free! There’s also the chance to win tickets to see Collabro. Have a flick through, hopefully sitting in the garden, in the sunshine, with a nice cool drink! Enjoy reading!

Louise Hunt Louise Hunt, 25, is a Paralympian and International Wheelchair Tennis player, currently ranked at number 11 in the world. She lives in Wanborough with her parents. Tell us how you became a tennis player I was born with Spina Bifida, a developmental congenital disorder caused by the incomplete closing of the embryonic neural tube. I have been in a wheelchair my whole life as I have little movement in my lower limbs. When I was about 5, I went to Stoke Mandeville Stadium where I got to try lots of different sports, it was something of a revelation to meet other people with disabilities, as until then it had felt like I was the only one. I was drawn to tennis as I had already tried it (our neighbours have a tennis court) I visited Stoke Mandeville every year and was talent spotted for the Tennis Foundation’s Wheelchair Tennis Performance Programme at a fairly young age. I went through the programme with two others – Jordanne Whiley and David Phillipson, we are all really good friends and became Paralympians at the same time. Our parents are all great friends too. I have a fantastic team of people helping me from my professional coaches and therapists, to my parents and friends. What is your training programme like? When I am not competing I
6
train five days a week – about thirty hours in total. There’s a lot of variety – gym work, on court with my coach, practising with a hitting partner, and regular sessions with a sports psychologist. How many tournaments do you take part in a year? Usually around 12 – 15, but as it’s a Paralympic year more like 20. I recently won tournaments in Israel and Bucharest, so feeling confident for Rio.
When do you definitely find out that you are going? It’s not confirmed until around the second week in June, but this time I am feeling fairly comfortable about it. You have to be in the top 22 to qualify, and I’m currently at number 11. Last time it was all a bit
more nail-biting – it was touch and go, and I had to win the Israel Open to qualify, which thank goodness I did. It was all quite stressful, I have so much more experience now that going to Rio will hopefully be slightly less pressured! What was it like competing at London 2012? It was fantastic, the best experience ever. The Paralympics saw a turning point for disabled sports, with a real ground swell of support. The opening ceremony was amazing – the tennis team was at the front of the parade of athletes, and entering the stadium to a wall of sound and thousands of people was absolutely magical. I had a real “I’ve done it! I’m at the Paralympics” moment. My mum was in the crowd sending me text messages of where to spot her! I was unlucky in the competition as I was drawn against the number one seed in the first round and got knocked out straight away, but the experience was unbelievable, and I hope to get further in Rio.

People Do disabled athletes receive funding? Yes, I am funded through the Tennis Foundation, but it doesn’t cover everything. I am currently crowd funding to help with the costs of going to Rio. My key objective is to get enough money so my coach can accompany me to the pre-Paralympic training camp, but there are lots of other requirements such as paying for tyres for the wheelchair which wear out incredibly quickly. I have had some sponsorship, particularly from Imagine Cruising who have been fab, but it’s mostly ad-hoc.
one of the most difficult things – travelling. I love getting to see the world and meet so many different people, but it can be exhausting. I often travel on my own and it can be an organisational nightmare getting from A to B. My sports wheelchair regularly gets damaged in transit, and it can be physically difficult just sitting in one place for long plane journeys. It’s all worth it when I get where I’m going though. Plus I’ve met some really interesting people on planes, including AnneMarie Wilson, founder of anti Female Genital Mutilation charity 28 Too Many. We chatted all the way back from South Africa, and have since become good friends. I’ve even become an ambassador for her charity. What’s your favourite thing? Winning! Also changing perceptions – making people realise that disability doesn’t stop you being an athlete.
You played at Wimbledon last year It was my first Grand Slam so was extra special, it was brilliant to be one of the eight women wheelchair tennis players there. I wasn’t overly keen on the all white kit, (it’s surprisingly difficult to find all white), but once I put it on I felt so proud to be wearing it for Wimbledon! The competition takes place alongside the able-bodied competition, and all the players are very supportive of wheelchair tennis. Mum was very excited to have had her nails done next to Novak Djokevic who was having his hair cut! What is the most difficult aspect of competing? One of the things I love is also
people to tennis and working with them. It was a very humbling experience – I was meant to be inspiring them, but they ended up inspiring me! They changed my perspective on life. One of the things I do regularly is motivational speaking, which I really enjoy. I like being able to tailor my speeches depending on requirements such as team-building, planning for success, achieving goals. What do you do in your spare time? I have a great group of friends that I see often. We do the usual things – go to concerts, the theatre or just meet up for dinner. They’re very down to earth and have been fantastically supportive. I like to play the piano – a major stress buster for me, and I’m learning to play the guitar. I’m quite arty, so enjoy creative activities such as painting and making cards.
What else do you do apart from competing? I have been involved in mentoring young people through the Youth Sport Trust. It involves going into secondary schools working with young people identified as disadvantaged/ disengaged. We use sport as a tool to help them realise their potential. It’s quite challenging, but has been incredibly rewarding – I would enjoy working in that area eventually.
My guilty pleasure is trashy TV, it helps me switch off. I love things like Britain’s Got Talent, or The Island with Bear Grylls and my all-time favourite was Glee. It’s good to relax and chill out sometimes.
I’ve also worked with the Department for Work and Pensions on how things can be made better for disabled people.
If you would like to help Louise on the Road to Rio visit her funding page: www.pledgesports.org/ projects/louise-hunt-road-torio/ For information on motivational speaking visit her website www.louisehunt.co.uk
One of the best things I have done is a development trip to Ghana, introducing disabled
Ambitions? I’d like to win a medal at the Paralympics, and I’d love to do mentoring for a full year. I’d also like to do some travelling for travelling’s sake at some point

The Merchant’s House Trust celebrates 25 years To mark 25 years since the foundation of The Merchant’s House Trust, and to thank the Marlborough community for their support, the charity celebrated with a party for past and present volunteers and staff, supporters, benefactors and patrons at Marlborough Town Hall. Attended by The Lord Lieutenant for Wiltshire, Mrs Sarah Rose Troughton CStJ, and members of Marlborough Town Council the evening included speeches, displays of photos and artefacts from The Merchant’s House and a timeline highlighting key events during the 25 years of the Project. The house’s original owners Mr and Mrs Bayly (played by Susan and Andy Pearson) also made an appearance! The occasion also marked a farewell to Sir John Sykes, the Trust’s long serving Chairman. One of his last duties was to present the Mayor with the peppercorn rent (the building is owned by Marlborough Town Council) – an actual bag of peppercorns. If you have never had a tour the Merchant’s House is well worth a visit, it is at 132 High St, Marlborough and is open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays for guided tours from April to October each year. Please visit www.themerchantshouse.co.uk for more information.

Telling
Wiltshire’s Story in 100 Objects Several items with a direct link to Marlborough feature in an exhibition inspired by the British Museum /BBC Story of the World in 100 Objects which showcases items from the collections of museums all across the county. The objects fill to bursting point two whole galleries at the museum; Eilmer, the Flying Monk of Malmesbury (a pub sign) has just escaped to his own special case on the stairs! As well as items from Marlborough itself, other artefacts in the collection reflect the rich heritage of the Marlborough Downs and the Kennet Valley. There are steel framed stone cutter’s goggles used by the Free family who had a sarsen stone cutting business at Fyfield from the 1850s to 1939; a portrait of William Golding by Michael Ayrton, 1965; lead bullets found embedded in the wall at St Mary’s Church from the Civil War Siege 1642; a Silver Cut Halfpenny of Matilda, 1139-1148 minted in Marlborough. Wiltshire Museum is the final stop on the spotlight tour of the Lacock Cup, which will be the centrepiece of the exhibition. A masterpiece of medieval silver made for the Lord of the Manor in about 1450, given later to St Cyriac’s Church in Lacock to be used as a chalice. A rare survival, since it escaped being melted down during the Reformation and the Civil War. For 50 years it has been kept at the British Museum and in 2013 was jointly acquired by the British Museum and Wiltshire Museum with the support of the National Heritage Memorial
Fund, the Art Fund and private donations. The Wiltshire Museum is at 41 Long Street, Devizes. SN10 1NS
Marlborough Wetland Officially Opened Action for the River Kennet (ARK) and Marlborough Town Council (joint owners of Stonebridge Meadow, part of Stonebridge Wild River Reserve,Marlborough) celebrated the official opening of the new integrated Wetland last Friday afternoon with over fifty people attending in the sunshine. Claire Perry MP cut the ribbon and spoke about the site as “A unique treasure that is so accessible.” She went on to say it was now in safe hands for the next generation and praised ARK for combining preservation with inclusion. The original idea for a pond came from Harry Forbes, who raised over two thousand pounds towards the project by organising a raffle. More than forty local businesses donated prizes to make this happen. The idea evolved into a wetland to filter runoff pollution from the nearby road. Further funding came from The Big Lottery Fund and the Environment Agency and with hundreds of hours of practical input from the ARK volunteers the wetland became a reality. Just one year on it is established and with the installation of a boardwalk and pond dipping platform the community, including those with limited mobility can now enter the meadow and enjoy the wildlife that has already naturally colonised the area.To find out more about ARK visit www.riverkennet.org

The New Greyhound
Welcome to...
with some of that time in Lambourn and Hungerford before settling in Marlborough in a house just off the High Street. They have a daughter and two grandchildren. With an Irish background, our Mayor, now retired, was a pilot for many years and has plenty of business experience particularly in finance and property development. He was also an accomplished rider, competing in events until a riding accident put an early end to his equestrian pursuits and flying career. He is also a Freeman of the City of London - honoured for his services to the saddlery industry.
On Monday, 9th May, the Town Hall played host to Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Robert Hiscox, Under Sherriff, David Lewis and many past Mayors and guests invited to witness Town Councillors officially elect the new Town Mayor of Marlborough – Councillor Noel BarrettMorton. During the traditional Mayor Making ceremony he presented his wife, Susan, with her Mayoress badge as well as the former Mayor’s badge to outgoing Mayor, Councillor Margaret Rose. In his Mayoral speech, the new Town Mayor emphasised his commitment to leading a ‘can do’ council with enhancing tourism close to the top of his list, supporting local business and traders as well as furthering links with the 4th Military Intelligence Battalion. He also praised the work of Cllr Rose as well as his other fellow, hardworking Councillors, reiterating the importance of serving the community in a harmonious way.
The formal meeting was followed by a reception in our Assembly Room where a film was shown by one of the Mayor’s chosen charities for his year – Wiltshire Air Ambulance. Councillor Barrett-Morton is also supporting Swift Medics. These are charities which could potentially save the life of anyone in Wiltshire and the bordering counties – both excellent causes.
The couple have lived in the area for about 30 years

Lifestyle
What’s Your Reality? Growing up, my memories of TV were Morecambe and Wise and light entertainment shows such as Crackerjack and the Generation Game, which we would sit and watch as a family.
Nowadays, my children have a feast of reality shows, the observational kind are most popular, spectating over the lives of people from Chelsea and Essex whose lives are so far removed from ours that, quite frankly, they could be from another planet. Then there are my favourites, the baking, pottering, interior designing types with critics who can crush a hopeful contestant with one sweeping eye brow raise. My husband would happily watch Robson Green catching fish all day long if he could. Of course, life is so very hectic that TV nowadays caters for the hectic life, offering us programmes that we can dip in and out of as we rush around the house, from one activity to another. Even if we don’t have time to sit and stare at the “Gogglebox” (now there’s an idea!) all evening, we can get our fill in five short minutes with increasing variety and an offer of escapism. My son casually suggested to me the other day that maybe I should apply to go on Bear Grylls’ “Island”. Other than maybe a quick and effective diet and a month’s holiday on a tropical
14
island, I have no clamourings whatsoever to eat limpets, wrestle with caymans or behead turkeys. I’m sure that I would rise to the challenge but it’s just not me. I’d happily bake you a chocolate éclair or macaron, even throw you a pot on a wheel and if Mary Berry popped round for tea, that would be absolutely fine. Paul Hollywood would be welcome too but he does terrify me slightly more. Then there are the lifestyle programmes with city folk escaping to the country and bosses disguising themselves as staff in the workplace. It’s always good to have a TV “nose” around other people’s homes and lifestyles, but would I change? No sir. Not a thing. I often wonder how many of the families that think of emigrating to Australia or New Zealand actually go and how many come back. I fully appreciate the sentiment that it would be great to lead an outdoors lifestyle all year round, in a new home. However, we have so much on our doorstep with the fascinating stone
circles, mysterious hills and long barrows as well as the amazing countryside, peppered with white horses and even the odd windmill. In fact, the scenery and the seasons are just part of the feast for the senses. The sounds and smells of the year are also full of excitement. I love to hear the sound of leather on willow at the start of the cricket season and through the summer the peals of church bells welcoming folk to Sunday service or to a wedding. The dawn chorus is yet another feature which I would so miss if I left the country. My reality therefore may seem really simple, and, certainly not much to write home about, or to entertain the teenage generation, but that suits me just fine.

A great day out for all the family at Barbury Horse Trials 2016 is an important year for Eventing with the Olympics taking place in Rio de Janeiro in August. Barbury will host a number of the leading Eventing nations and riders. Also this year, we see the inaugural running of the Event Rider Masters series and we are proud that Barbury is one of the six events in this series. This will see the top 40 riders in the world competing over the Saturday and Sunday of the event, with a total prize fund of £50,000. On Saturday 9 July, back by popular demand, we will again run the JCB Champions Challenge in support of the Injured Jockeys Fund. Last year’s race (over fences and through the water in the Main Arena) included a stellar line up of stars from racing including A P McCoy, John Francome, Richard Johnson and Sam Twiston-Davies against the Eventers including Mark Todd, Andrew Nicholson and Tina Cook. Barbury on Sunday has become the place to be and there is no better
24
place to see the action than in the Barbury Club. There is a full day’s action finishing with the excitement of the cross country featuring the world’s top horses and riders. Charity Lunch On Saturday, we are hosting a special lunch in aid of Brighter Futures Radiotherapy Appeal. Every month, 284 people in Swindon and Wiltshire are given a diagnosis of cancer and have to make the gruelling round trip to Oxford for treatment. This new unit will stop all that and we are helping to raise funds on their behalf to buy the necessary equipment for the unit, which will hopefully open in April
2017. Their appeal patron, Mr Rory Bremner will be attending the lunch and giving a short talk about the appeal. There is a champagne reception, a 2-course summer buffet at £80 per head (includes ½ bottle of wine per person) and includes entrance ticket and VIP car parking. As well as the competition there is plenty to see at Barbury, with a great selection of over 50 shops, as well as children’s entertainment. To book tickets, hospitality or camping, visit www.barburyhorsetrials.co.uk or call the box office on 01672 516125.

Marlborough College Summer School – Bigger and Better than ever! Now in its 42nd year, Marlborough College Summer School runs for 4 weeks from 10 July – 6 August. This eagerly anticipated annual event has grown beyond compare into one of the largest multi-generational Summer Schools of its kind and welcomes visitors from both home and abroad, with many returning year after year to renew friendships and enjoy all that Marlborough College has to offer. The popularity of Summer School is undoubtedly underpinned by the phrase “something for everyone”. Catering for students starting from 3 years old through to 90 years young, it is this blend spanning the generations and accommodating all combinations of family groups and individuals that creates a unique holiday atmosphere in the beautiful setting of Marlborough College. The eclectic course programme of art, culture and sport is refreshed and developed annually, and this year is no exception, with traditional favourites running alongside a wide range of inspiring new titles including a Get fit Bootcamp, Writing Comedy and Sitcom, Nordic
Walking, Wiltshire from the Air, and even an adult Rock School! In addition to over 400 fascinating courses for adults and a comprehensive programme of activities for young people, 2016 also sees the first Summer School courses run in Spain. Following a successful Andalucian birdwatching course last month, popular Summer School tutor Claire Warner will lead a watercolour painting course in September. The Friday exhibition continues to flourish and provides a perfect opportunity to view work from many of the courses, whilst enjoying live music and entertainment in the wonderful setting of Court in the heart of the College. What’s more, the entertainment continues long after afternoon tea is served. The Summer School team have surpassed themselves with this year’s packed entertainment programme which includes daily lectures, film nights, recitals and showcase Gala performances which are open to both
Summer School students and the general public. The 2016 Gala Series features a superb line-up ranging from Michael Palin (selling out fast), to the boy band Collabro who were recently voted the nation’s favourite ever winners of Britain’s Got Talent. There’s also Illyria’s outdoor production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, classical music from the Locrian Ensemble, soul and vintage pop from Si Cranstoun and a show from Lee Jackson, the ultimate Elvis impersonator! Summer School has also teamed up with the Marlborough Jazz Festival this year to bring you a performance from legendary British jazz singer, Natalie Williams. To ensure your tickets please purchase in advance. To check availability and to book, visit summerschool. co.uk. Entertainment tickets are also available from the Summer School Office (01672 892388), or from Sound Knowledge in Hughenden Yard.

Vet’s Column
Itchy and scratchy? Summer’s on the way and with the warming weather come the fleas and ticks. Fleas are more common in the spring to autumn months but with central heating, these days we see them all year round.
One flea can lay numerous eggs within a short period of time, so once fleas are found on your pet it can be challenging to eliminate them. Fleas feed on blood, be it animal or human, and some of our pets become allergic to flea saliva. They can, as a result, need treatments for the resulting skin sores and sometimes infections. Fleas can transmit the tapeworm Dipylidium the most common worm seen by owners. This can either be the adult tapeworm itself in faeces or vomit, or the wriggling rice like segments often seen in a cat’s fur by the tail end. In large numbers fleas can cause anaemia, especially in the very old or young. Fleas drop eggs almost continuously; these hatch into larvae that feed on the debris within carpets, beddings etc. They then form a cocoon for development, and can hibernate for prolonged periods. Hatching is often triggered by movement, and warmth, ie the passing by of pet or owner. The fleas seen on your pet are only the tip of the iceberg. Only 5% of the flea population will be seen on your animal, so the
36
ongoing presence of active fleas on a treated pet means more often that the environmental control of the fleas has not been sufficient. Preventing fleas is far easier than treating them. There is a huge range available currently. Unfortunately there are a lot of products out there that are not very effective and can be a waste of your money and time. Some can be bought in pharmacies, but the active ingredients and efficacy can vary hugely, so we’d always recommend a tailored approach by discussing it with your vet. The most effective products are those that contain prescription medications and are usually most cost effective in the long run. If fleas are found on your pet, prompt treatment is advised. It is essential to also wash their bedding, hoover the house to remove eggs, and treat the house with an insecticide. Different stages of the environmental flea cycle can be resistant to some products, necessitating repeat applications in some cases. Rabbits are also at risk of fleas and of myxomatosis being transmitted, a fatal disease found countrywide, which can be vaccinated against. It is very common in our wild rabbits. The other creepy crawly at this time of year is the tick. And anyone who walks pasture land, woodland etc where sheep or deer graze will likely have met these.
Removal with a tick hook by following the instructions or booking in with your vet or nurse if in doubt is highly advised. If the mouth parts are left within the skin an abscess may form. Ticks are blood feeders and so can transmit Lyme Disease and babesiosis. (Babesiosis is mainly seen abroad, but recent news has highlighted the infection with the U.K.) Lyme disease is a zoonosis so humans can also catch this from ticks.Ticks can also transmit tapeworm. Treatment of ticks can be headed under repellents ie collars, spot-ons, or tablets. Each have pros and cons, so ideally it is best to discuss with your vet for your pets requirements. Legal
DIY Divorce? Much has been made recently of the increase in couples handling their own divorce. This has been caused by the impact of the changes in Legal Aid. Many couples decide to attempt to complete the minefield of forms themselves to avoid the perceived legal costs. Sadly, this is often a short sighted view, couples seek divorces as their relationships have broken down, and divorcing is often the only point they can agree on, but the cost to one party through agreeing and finding themselves legally trapped in a poor financial settlement almost always outweighs the costs of divorce. In addition, as John Bingham points out that this has caused increasing delays and on average divorce now takes three weeks longer than it would have done this time last year. The delays are caused by the lack of experience and technical knowledge which lawyers, such as our Family Team at DGR Law, possess. The mistakes made when completing forms cause hold ups when processing the documents. The average time to process
38
a divorce from first application to decree nisi now takes approximately 23 weeks if handled by lawyers but the time taken by couples representing themselves takes on average 32.6 weeks. It is an extremely emotional and stressful time for many people and delays and mistakes only add to the problems. Our Family Team at DGR Law does everything it can to minimise the stress of the divorce process by handling all the paperwork and correspondence for our Clients. We aim to achieve this in a relatively short time to achieve the best possible outcome. Our Team are also very experienced with the financial matters that follow the grant of the Decree Nisi and which must be agreed before the Decree Absolute can be given. Mr Bingham does not make reference to the arduous process of Financial Remedy Applications and the entire required information gathering but this can be even more complicated than the previous stage of divorce. Unfortunately,, we have yet to see the completely amicable divorce, and as such we would not at any time recommend the self-representation of couples at this difficult time as finance and
money aspects of divorce are always very emotive subjects, where objective advice is vital, and the applications can take many months and very intense negotiations. We are here to help every step of the way and do the best we can to keep costs down at this time. If you are struggling with the sinking sand of Divorce make an appointment for a free 30 minute consultation. Karen Salmon DGR Law 01672 511797

Gardening
Social Climbers I’ve always had a soft spot for climbers – they offer a dynamic and refreshing change from the norm. I can never quite understand why they get relegated to the far flung corners of the display area in garden centre, quarantined from everything else. Maybe it’s because they are seen as problem children that can’t be trusted with their less lofty brethren. In fact, the opposite is true; climbers are sociable plants and often make very good bedfellows for many shrubs and trees, using their sturdy frameworks for support in return for attracting pollinators with their dazzling flowers. For the gardener, this habit allows us to experiment on a whole new level so, instead of constantly looking down for something interesting in your borders, why not try something that is happiest with its head in the clouds? There are few more dramatic horticulural visions than a well-grown climbing rose or wisteria clothing the facade of a house, providing a beautifully scented spectacle that still looks good even when the main flowering display is over. They require the minimum of maintenance (as long as you know how to prune!) and, given a 5-star start in life, they will reward you with a display that will only improve with age. They also become magnets for pollinators and will provide a great refuge for birds which enjoy making nests among the thorny branches. A win-win for everyone and everything! For those of us without a suitable house wall to allow
40
a rampant climber to do its thing, there are other ways of introducing climbing plants into the garden, the easiest being to enlist the services of a handy shrub or small tree. Roses make great climbing partners with old fruit trees, so if you have a Bramley that is beyond redemption, why not plant the rose “Wedding Day” at its feet? You will soon have a gorgeous celebration of someone’s special day! To make it even more interesting, plant a dark flowered clematis such as Jackmanii on the north-facing side of the tree trunk (they like shade around their roots) and let the climbers intertwine to form a colourful aerial display. You could substitute the clematis for a heavenlyscented Honeysuckle or even a golden-leaved Hop to give completely unique combinations; just remember that when you prepare the planting hole next to a tree, your newly planted climber will need a bit of help competing with the tree roots so give it some fresh soil enriched with a slow release fertiliser.
means you can fit them into a relatively small space (they look especially good in VERY large pots on a patio) and still have room for planting around their feet. The world is your oyster with regard to what type of climber you use, Sweet Peas are an obvious favourite, but why not have a go with something a bit different? Morning Glories, Cobea Scandens and Eccramarcas Scaber are all amazing climbers which can be treated as annuals if you plant them now, and they will give sumptuous diplays right up to the first frosts.
I like to use climbers as vertical statements through a border. Growing them up wigwams or columns
Jonathan Wild Gardener with his head in the clouds!
Clematis are now available in a dazzling mix of colours and habits and the possibilities for combining different hybrids on the same climbing frame to give constantly changing colour are endless. On the other hand, if you want something really dramatic, then how about the lovely Passion Flower (Passiflora) – easy to grow and always a talking point with visitors! Chocks away!
