Edit or’s Letter
Happy birthday to us…. This issue marks the 9th anniversary of Marlborough Town and Country, hard to believe it has been that long! When it started, my son was a toddler, and my daughter a primary school pupil – now he’s about to go to Secondary school and she is approaching the end of her first year at University - eek! To mark the anniversary and because recently one of my interviewees said “You’ll have to come back so I can find out more about you”, this month’s interview is with me! I keep reading about how you must be visible in your business – so thought, why not? It is a bit surreal interviewing yourself though – hard to maintain professional detachment and objectivity. At least I didn’t have to send it to myself to get it approved! I hope you’ve enjoyed reading the magazine over the past nine years – don’t forget I’m always happy to hear about your news, events and goings on. If you’re interested in advertising so much the better, but feature is reliant on space available and reader interest, not money. Thanks to all my advertisers, the magazine wouldn’t be possible without them. If you enjoy the magazine, and use any advertisers’ services, please let them know you saw them in Marlborough Town and Country – then they’ll know it’s working! Enjoy the magazine this month,

Andrea Jerome Andrea Jerome is the publisher and editor of Marlborough Town and Country. She lives with her husband Mark, and children Ellie, 19, and John, 11, in Wanborough. Are you from this area? No, I am from Manchester originally, or more precisely Eccles, where the cakes come from. When I was at University I went to Cornwall to work for the Summer, and whilst there I met my husband Mark. After two years of long distance relationship, I moved down after I graduated from Uni. Who says holiday romances never work out? We’ve been together over thirty years now – where does the time go? Marlborough Town and Country is celebrating 9 years in business, how did you come to set it up? My background is in Marketing – in areas as diverse as property relocation, ladies’ underwear, council leisure services and retail. After 13 years working for WHSmith in their marketing department, mainly in Marketing Communications, I wanted a change of scene, and when an opportunity to take voluntary redundancy came up I took it. After a slight detour doing interior design (which I decided was great as a hobby, but not for me as a business) I decided I wanted to do something that utilised my experience more. I came across a franchise for magazine publishing, which helped me realise that it wouldn’t be as expensive as I originally thought to start my own magazine. (I also realised I didn’t need to pay a franchise fee and percentage of my revenue to a franchisor, as I had sufficient experience to go it alone). So, Marlborough Town and Country was born! Was it difficult to get going? It was a bit nerve wracking as it was 2008 and the financial crash happened just as I was putting together the first issue. In hard times advertising is often the first thing to be cut back, so it could have been a disaster. However, local businesses seemed to like the idea of a magazine for the community that offered interesting features and information as well as a quality printed product, that was delivered through people’s doors. I set out to make it different to the other free magazines that came through the door, which were mostly adverts, and I think I have achieved that. People often tell me they look forward to getting it every month, which is very rewarding. Do you work on your own? Mostly, although I use a graphic designer to do my artwork, which ensures the magazine has a professional look; and a distribution company to deliver to the 7000 circulation. I have regular

I love meeting so many different people – it seems everyone in the Marlborough area has an interesting story. contributors who supply articles, but everything else is done by me (I’m even interviewing myself now!) Have things changed much over the years? Not massively, although people use digital communication more now. However, people still enjoy reading something they can hold in their hands. I know that people tend to keep hold of the magazine from one month to the next, so it stays around in people’s houses. Obviously, businesses come and go, although I have several advertisers that have been in the magazine from the start, and many that have been with me for several years – so I must be doing something right! What do you enjoy most? I love meeting so many different people – it seems everyone in the Marlborough area has an interesting story. There is so much going on in all sorts of areas – for a relatively small town Marlborough has more than its fair share of culture and leisure. I also speak to people from a vast array of businesses – from artists and authors, to lawyers and accountants and trades men and women. I also enjoy talking to the people who contribute to the local community – such as those involved in Marlborough in Bloom, Action for the

People River Kennet, The Literature Festival, the recent Passion Play, Aldbourne Band to name just a few. It’s nice to be able to raise awareness of things people are doing, not just through advertising, but with articles in the magazine. So, if anyone has anything they want to publicise it’s always worth getting in touch. What do you enjoy least? I must admit that the financial side of the business is a chore. Raising invoices and chasing payments is my least favourite job – and unfortunately if I don’t do it I don’t get paid! Who is the most interesting person you have interviewed? It would be impossible to choose. In the last nine years I’ve interviewed all sorts of people, from sportsmen and women to artists and authors, and many types of business people. I think that no matter who you are there’s an interesting story to tell. I always enjoy talking to people that are well known in the local community – Nick and Edwina Fogg, Val Compton and Dr Nick Maurice spring to mind; creative people make good subjects – for instance Jacqui Melhuish, from Wagon Yard Artists, and Vanessa Lafaye, who when I interviewed her was starting Marlborough Community Choir, and now is a best-selling novelist. I often interview people who advertise with me, because it gives them extra value, and also because I find it fascinating hearing how people came to be in the business they are in and what it involves. What do you like most about Marlborough and the surrounding area? I like the combination of town and country – the bustling town centre with shops and restaurants, and lots of things going on, and the beautiful countryside that is minutes away from the High Street. Also, surrounding villages each have their own character and
community. I also think there is always something new to discover – the nature walk from Marlborough College being a recent find. I have a real soft spot for Marlborough Waterfront in Kennet Place, although I’m still disappointed I haven’t seen the kingfisher! Where do you like to shop? I love the High Street, and hope that it manages to sustain its independent feel, despite more chains appearing. Luna, the independent clothes shop is always worth a look, and I like to have a potter round some of the gift shops. The Cat’s Whiskers is quirky and full of interesting things, and Bow House has a great selection of things for the home, and of course The Merchant’s House shop is worth a visit. I also like Wagon Yard Gallery which is tucked away off London Rd – it’s only open at the weekend, and has some lovely art at very affordable prices. I could go on – the pet shop, D&R to name two more – but I’ll run out of space! What about eating out? I’m lucky in that my village has five pubs to choose from, so we tend not to stray too far in the evening. The Cross Keys in Wanborough is my current favourite. I am hoping to give Rick Stein a try at some point, and I’ve heard lots of good things about Dan’s Restaurant on London Rd. During the day, I like Krumbz on Kennet Place (back to Marlborough Waterfront), the Food Gallery, and also Café Thirty8 in Hughenden Yard – all have great food and service. Do you enjoy reading? I love reading, and am in a local book club which means I read things that I might not otherwise have chosen. We recently read The Bees by Laline Paull, a novel set in a bee hive – a fascinating fictionalisation that is apparently true to the behaviour of real life bees.
I enjoy lots of different genres from crime to science fiction. My favourites of the last few years are The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion (laugh out loud funny), Me Before You by Jo Jo Moyes, a tear jerker that is beautifully written (the recent film of it did not begin to do it justice) and The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. Summertime by Vanessa Lafaye was the book club’s favourite of the year, and I am looking forward to reading her second book At First Light, out in June. I also like reading with my 11-year-old – current favourite is the Skulduggery Pleasant series which I’d recommend if you have boys around the same age. What about music? Like most people I have fairly broad taste – though classical is not really my thing. Two of my musical heroes died last year – Prince and David Bowie, and I consider myself lucky that I got to see them both in concert. I am very fond of 80s music, (my era), but try to listen to newer stuff as well. Rag n Bone man is my latest discovery. When my daughter is playing her music in the car, she gets exasperated with me asking “Who’s this?” usually for the third time about the same song. We went to Glastonbury as a family last year, which despite the sea of mud was a great experience. Films? Love going to the cinema, but don’t seem to get round to it as often as I’d like. I have an evergrowing list of films I’d like to see including Lion and Hidden Figures. I tend to end up going to see kids’ films – Boss Baby being the most recent. It’s a bonus if I manage not to fall asleep in them! A Farewell
At our Mayor Making ceremony on 15 May, Cllr Noel BarrettMorton passes his mayoral role and chairmanship of the Town Council onto his successor. The last year has been a busy one and your Mayor has represented Marlborough admirably at civic and charity events throughout the county, beautifully supported by an elegant Mayoress, his wife Susan. He has supported community and voluntary groups in the town, maintained close links with the 4th Military Intelligence Battalion, opened many events, hosted the Queen’s Birthday celebrations in the Town Hall as well as raising funds for Swift Medics and Wiltshire Air Ambulance. An excellent First Citizen – thank you Mr Mayor.
Macebearer
If you would like to help represent your town and enjoy historic tradition, you may be just the person we are looking for to join our small team of Officers of Dignity – our Town Crier and two Macebearers. We now need another voluntary Macebearer. Ceremonial attire provided! If you are interested in this role, please contact Mrs Linda Chapman, our Civic Secretary, at the Town Council offices.
A Goodbye
After 25 years working for the Town Council, our Senior Groundsman and Deputy Town Hall Caretaker, Mark Harding, has retired. Councillors and staff wished him farewell at a small
event at the Town Hall in March. Mark has seen some changes since he joined the team in 1992 and throughout those years he has given the town a superb service whether looking after our public gardens, play areas, cemeteries and other open spaces or the Town Hall and will be remembered for his high standards, wide horticultural knowledge and conscientious approach – he will certainly be missed. We wish Mark and his wife, Julie, a very happy retirement.
George Lane Public Toilets
As hoped, the new toilets at the George Lane Car Park will be open by the end of April. As readers will already be aware, these were closed by Wiltshire Council in April 2016 and the Town Council decided to take them on. No investment had been made at the site for many years and the new modern, unisex toilets will offer facilities to our residents and visitors. The charge of 20p will help to fund running costs. The toilets at Chantry Lane will now close and the building sold at auction.
Youth Centre Wiltshire Council was to close the Youth Centre at St Margaret’s Mead in May 2017. However, the Town Council
agreed to take on this important community facility. Councillors are currently negotiating a 7 year lease on it with an aspiration that it is eventually passed on as an asset transfer. We are hoping that this will mean that the centre will soon be open again for our young people and others in the community.
Don’t forget to vote!
Although there will be no election for the Town Council on 4th May, many thanks to those candidates who came forward to represent their communities. More information about the new Council will be available later in May. However, there will be an election for Wiltshire Council - don’t forget to have your say.

Horris Hill School Horris Hill School has a unique ethos which provides a rigorous and extensive academic, sporting, musical and artistic foundation. If you want a caring, nurturing and rounded environment for your son, then we recommend signing up for their Open Morning on Saturday 20th May. They deliver success by achieving places and awards at the very best senior schools and by developing boys with impeccable manners, good humour and active brains! In the past academic year awards to senior schools have included - Outstanding Talent at Harrow, Academic at Winchester, Eton and Radley, Music at St Edward’s Oxford, Sport at Millfield. The majority of 13+ leavers go onto Eton and Winchester, as well as Radley, Sherborne, Marlborough, St Edwards, Millfield amongst others. Recent 2017 successes have included the U13A rugby team winning the IAPS National Small Schools Sevens tournament (a brilliant win against some excellent opponents), the awards to senior schools that the top year have so far earned for Academic, Sport, Music, Drama and Outstanding Talent and the school placing fifth in the National Satips General Knowledge competition; The Senior Chess Team also won the Regional round of the U19 National Schools Chess Championship regional round against Radley College - a

fantastic win against much older opponents! Horris Hill believes that the period from 7 - 13 years of age is the most critical in any boy’s life. These are the years where the foundations of the men they can become are laid. At such a crucial stage in their cultural development, they believe that an all-boys’ school provides the optimal setting where boys will exercise their intellectual inquisitiveness, free to explore all avenues, building self-confidence and awareness in a safe and encouraging environment. Plus they have 90 acres of grounds for sport, activities, den building, bushcraft and for letting off steam! They offer a wide variety of sports and extra-curricular activities, so that every boy has the opportunity to develop interests away from the classroom. The main sports are Rugby, Football, Cricket, Hockey and Tennis. They also have their own golf course, train and modelling room, squash court and cross country course. For boys with green fingers, they have their very own Kitchen Garden, where they also have Chickens and
Pigs! They also offer Lamda for budding performers, Judo, Mandarin, Shooting, Climbing and a hugely successful Chess Club. The relatively small size of the school allows every boy to play a full part in school life, through which he will learn how he can make a difference to his surroundings. Horris Hill promote personal qualities that allows the boys to get the best from each other and their surroundings and they actively encourage the boys to take responsibility for themselves and each other. It is easy to forget that such a supportive, kind and confident culture is now something of a rarity. There is no doubting that they have been busy, striving to achieve as much as possible, but each challenge has been met with enthusiasm and Horris Hill boys continue to be gracious no matter what the result. To see for yourself what a difference a Horris Hill education could make for your son, please visit. Simply email registrar@horrishill.com to arrange an appointment. They look forward to welcoming you to Horris Hill.

Lifestyle
Night at the proms This year my daughter attends her year 11 prom following the GCSE exams which are approaching at rapid pace. Life chez Kellow shifts from teenage angst around revision to what colour eye shadow one should wear for the prom. I can’t keep up. Back in the day, when I took my O Levels (yes, dear reader, I am that old), we had closed book exams, a quick signing of each other’s ties and off we went into sixth form, all moving up in the same school. This year’s exam students face the new challenge, as we did, of closed book exams as well as a new mark scheme for maths and English. It has taken most of the year for the pupils, teachers and parents to get their heads around the new mark scheme of one to nine with A’s B’s and C’s disappearing. The whole question of what number actually constitutes a C grade remains somewhat of a mystery to me still. When a child proudly tells you their mark and you dampen the situation with an “is that good?”, it’s really not the done thing. I do worry - How will the employers be appraised of what means what when they interview the first batch to get through the system? So, whilst it’s time for the final push for exams, us parents need to be prepared for the onslaught of the prom. This is a new concept for me. I never had a prom, so I haven’t a clue what I should be doing and where I need to butt out as it’s just not “cool” for me to be involved. Am I supposed to be
18
scouring the internet for the most whacky form of transport, booking hair appointments, facials, make-overs, spray tans, nail polishes, buying dresses and shoes etc or do I just pass the cash over with a smile? Is it cool to buy your child a corsage to go with their dress? Who knows the answers? Don’t get me wrong, I think that the idea of a final party for the year 11’s before they all go their separate ways (so many options for 6th form study now) is a lovely idea. I just need to read a Parent’s Guide to Admin for your teenager so that I don’t overstep the mark. I was delighted to be invited to choose the prom dress with my daughter. I had visions of us visiting lovely shops looking at lots of flowy chiffony creations (a prelude to bridal shopping in years to come perhaps?). However, my bubble was soon burst as, apparently, that’s not how you do it now – duh! Instead, we spent an evening swapping ipad and iphone searches for dresses with everything that I found greeted with a derisory scowl until we finally found the dress of our dreams. Great! The only problem now was that I was committing a largeish sum of money online to a country far far away in the hope that something would eventually come back. To be fair, about six
weeks later, it did. It’s lovely but will take a fair amount of fitting to look stunning. However, it will do. In fact, all of them will look wonderful – so grown up – where did the time go…? Next chapter needed in the Parent’s Guide..is it ok for me, Grandmas, Aunties, family friends to come and watch her go into the prom in the limo, lear jet, pogo stick or whatever she chooses, cameras and tissues in hand (heaven forbid that I cry in front of her – “Oh Mum, you’re sooo embarrassing!”). There’s a fine line between being an in your face parent and seemingly not bothered – us parents just can’t see the line. I’m sure that I’ll fumble my way through the maze. I need to accept too that the size and shape of the maze will shift constantly and, even if I get it vaguely right this time round, I will have it all wrong when it comes time for my son’s prom in a few years. Fiona Kellow Fiona Kellow is a working mum of two. When she isn’t running around after her family she is a Partner at Thrings Solicitors, specialising in family law.

BMW 5 Series
Every so often, a car comes along that makes you wonder how on earth are they are going to improve on it. Such a car was the 2010 BMW 5 Series, code named the F10. It was perfect in every way, sleek and handsome, a delight to drive, fast but frugal and well equipped, yet sensibly priced. Such is the nature of the car business that you can’t just keep making the same car ad infinitum, no matter how good it is. Your rivals will bring out new models and steal your market share, so it was inevitable that this year sees the launch of the all-new 5 Series, confusingly code named the G30. Can it improve on perfection?
boot, meaning plenty of legroom front and back. A lot of aluminium is used in the construction and this saves up to 100kg in weight; believe me, that’s a lot – equivalent to an obese passenger. The interior is beautifully crafted and ergonomically sublime, with an uncluttered dash that is angled towards the driver and a large central information screen. Functionally, it is superb but it doesn’t really convey a sense of luxury in the way that a Mercedes E Class does.
The G30 looks quite similar to the F10; the styling is evolutionary rather than revolutionary. The headlights now blend into the distinctive kidney shaped grill, the rear has been reshaped and there are some new curves and creases. The overall effect is to make the car look lower, leaner and a touch more menacing. All in all, this is a fine looking car, to my eye the best looking premium executive saloon currently on the market.
There’s a lot of new technology in the G30, although much of it is only available on the options list. There’s gesture control for the ancillary controls and an autonomous driving package that changes lanes at a touch of the indicator. BMW’s excellent Xdrive FWD system is available on every model and standard on some. Keen drivers can also specify adaptive suspension and fourwheel steering. The engine line up is fundamentally the same as before, but every variant has been tweaked to deliver around 10% more power and fuel economy. Apparently, BMW can’t make the most popular 520d quickly enough so I had to make do with its bigger brother, the V6 530d. With 261bhp and a tidal wave of torque, the performance is
Underneath the skin a lot more has changed. The car is lower and wider and, although the roofline is more steeply raked to give it a more coupé-like profile, it has also been moved further back. All of this translates into more interior space and a bigger

quite simply staggering for a big saloon; 0-62 comes up in a tad over 5 seconds and it just keeps on hurling itself towards the horizon. Despite this, it can still manage 56mpg and it is remarkably refined. BMW’s are all about the driving experience and the new 5 series doesn’t disappoint. The handling is outstanding razor sharp steering, excellent traction and an almost total absence of body roll - but it is the ride that really impresses. Short of a pothole the size of a quarry, the G30 just soaks everything up like it isn’t there; it’s like driving on a billiard table all the time. The new 5 series is quite simply the best executive saloon in existence. It is a superb all-rounder and excels in every area. The Mercedes E Class was the car to beat and, other than interior space, the 5 Series is better in every way. The only downside is that it is so ubiquitous; like an iPhone, everyone has got one. In a world where people worry about what their car says about them, the 5 Series simply says I know a brilliant car when I see one. Kit Johnson Car as tested BMW 530d SE £43,835 RRP

Long-Term Sickness Absence and Dismissal of Employees The Court of Appeal have recently provided guidance on when an employee on long-term sick leave can be dismissed. The case concerned Ms O’Brien, who was the head of a school department who had been attacked by a pupil. She recovered from her injuries and returned, but felt unsafe and not happy with the school’s perceived lack of action with regards bullies. Due to stress resulting from this she was off work for more than a year. Following this period of prolonged absence the school wished to meet to find when she would be able to return to work and what work adjustments could be made to facilitate her return. Ms O’Brien refused to meet as she felt it might upset her and, instead, she was asked to provide written responses to a questionnaire by the school. As part of her response Ms O’Brien’s GP felt unable to confidently state when she could return. Due to this the school started their incapacity process and as a result dismissed her. It is very important in this matter that at this time there was no evidence to suggest that Ms O’Brien would return in the short near term. Ms O’Brien appealed, now presenting a note from her GP stating she could return to work shortly. The appeal was dismissed, the school being wary of the inconsistent medical evidence about her fitness to return to work and the GP note’s timely appearance. Ms O’Brien then started and

won her employment claim for discrimination and unfair dismissal. This was overturned by the Employment Appeal Tribunal, but then restored by the Court of Appeal. In the lead judgment of Lord Justice Underhill long-term sickness was considered and some points of guidance made. First, where there is no certainty as to when an employee who has been absent for over 12 months shall return dismissing that employee will not necessarily be unfair. This is the case even if the employee claims they just need a little more time and that their return is imminent. Second, how severe the ongoing impact the absence is having on the employer is a significant factor in determining at what point dismissal becomes justified. An employment tribunal will require that evidence be provided as to this impact, although, in some fact dependant cases, it will be more obvious. Third, when an employee provides fresh or updated medical evidence the employer’s decision to dismiss must be fairly made based on the evidence available at that time.
The fact that the Court of Appeal found in Ms O’Brien’s favour despite the above suggests that this was a borderline case, turning on the failure of the school to dismiss in light of the new GP note, rather than seeking further medical evidence. But the judgment emphasises that for any employer dealing with long-term employee absences two things are extremely important in addition to following the normal procedure. That for employers it would be good practice to maintain written records of any issues absences are causing, and that during any absence process the employer should very carefully consider all of the medical evidence before making a decision. What do you do if you come across an accident? If you know the basics of first aid, you may be able to prevent the animals suffering, help its owner, and perhaps even save the animal’s life. Animal first aid is: the immediate treatment of the injured animal, using facilities or materials at hand to help you. The aims of first aid are: • To preserve life • To prevent the condition from worsening • To promote recovery/prevent suffering Firstly – assess the situation (is the animal in danger of more injury, does it need moving immediately, or the traffic stopping etc. You need to assess how you can safely help – do not put yourself in danger). Don’t panic, take a deep breath and try to think logically. A – Airway (check that there is nothing in the mouth causing a blockage.) B – Breathing (is the patient breathing) C – Circulation (is the animal’s heart beating) Control any haemorrhage (bleeding) Approaching an injured animal An injured animal is very likely to be frightened, and a frightened animal could bite or scratch anyone who approaches, even if they know that person. Approach gently and quietly, reassure the patient with your voice. If the animal tries to bite you may need to make a temporary muzzle. You could use a looped shoe lace, sock, scarf or belt to tie around the mouth, but do not muzzle if the patient is having breathing problems or has facial injuries. If the patient is unconscious Tilt the head sideways so that the tongue falls out – pull the tongue forward to clear the airway. DO NOT PUT YOUR FINGERS IN THE MOUTH. Check airway by putting your hand in front of the nose & feeling for air movement and checking that the chest is moving. If the animal is not breathing, start artificial respiration Check the heart to see if it is beating. Place your hand on the chest just below the elbow to feel for a beat. Make the animal comfortable and prevent heat loss by covering with a coat, cardigan etc.

Mouth – to – nose resuscitation: Pull tongue forwards. Close mouth and cup fingers and a thumb around it to create an airtight seal. If the mouth is not sealed then any air you blow into the nose will escape through the mouth, instead of going into the lungs. If the patient is large you may need both hands. It is recommended that you wear a face mask when attempting this, but if none is available and you want to continue, then try to be careful not to inhale any saliva. Do not over inflate the lungs or the delicate lung tissue could be damaged. Gentle puffs that just cause the rib cage to lift are best blowing at one second intervals. Cardiac massage: If the heart is not beating, lay the animal on its right side. Place the heel of one hand on the rib cage behind the front leg. Cover this hand with the heel of the other hand. Pressure should be applied at half-second intervals for small animals, and one second intervals for larger ones. For very small dogs and cats the heart is massaged by compressing the ribs between the thumb and forefinger. If there are two people available both artificial respiration and cardiac massage can be done together. If you are alone, cardiac massage is for 5 seconds, then inflate the chest once, continue again: heart for 5 seconds – breathing for 1 second. Repeat. Bleeding: Cover a bleeding wound with anything to hand: a handkerchief, sock, scarf etc, apply pressure, unless there is anything sticking out of the wound – pressure could make this worse. Just cover and if possible, lightly keep dressing on with tape, shoe lace, scarf, sock etc … Telephone a Veterinary Surgeon as soon as possible.
