Mike Booth –
Marlborough Rising Mike Booth is on the committee of Marlborough Rising, the town’s new music festival which takes place on 7-9 September. A commercial model maker and illustrator, Mike also performs in his own band Marcella, also appearing at Marlborough Rising. Tell us a bit about yourself After art school, where I trained as a commercial illustrator, I got into model making. Over time I have worked in both aviation and motor racing, and now I focus on making 1:4 scale models, with a focus on vintage aircraft up to the 1950s. My original composite model of a Spitfire was very well received, and generated a lot of interest and further commissions for static museum displays and hired for military dinners. Currently I am working for a Hollywood studio on a project, which is very exciting. I’ve lived in Marlborough for 17 years, I really love it, as it is an amazing area for the creative arts, and I’ve always found it friendly and welcoming. How did you get involved in Marlborough Rising? I was asked to get involved by someone I knew on the committee. I had played at The Jazz Festival several times, which is how I knew them. What is your role? My main responsibility is A & R, which is basically booking the acts to appear at the festival. The committee wanted the festival to have a broad spectrum of music with something for everyone, and a focus on original and contemporary music, which is an ethos I strongly identify with. Tell us more about Marlborough Rising Our tag line is “Filling the town with music”, which is what we are aiming to do. After the Jazz Festival closed after 30 years there was a void to be filled, and a small but enthusiastic group of volunteers decided to create a new festival with its own identity. As I’ve already
6
We wanted the festival to have a broad spectrum of music with something for everyone, and a focus on original and contemporary music mentioned the range of music is broad with something for everyone. This is shown by our headline acts: Scouting for Girls are a pop act with a great following, and a strong link to Marlborough (remember the Christmas Lights switch on a couple of years ago?); Turin Brakes are an indie folk band who have sold over a million records and have a high profile at the moment; and Joe Stilgoe is a superb musician that puts on a fantastic show combining musicianship with theatricality. In addition to these guys we have acts covering genres such as jazz/swing/blues/indie rock/pop/west end musicals and Celtic fusion (and that’s just off the top of my head!) There are over 20 acts in total, full details to be found on our website. How many venues are there? The main stage is in Priory Gardens, with supporting stages at The Castle and Ball, St Peter’s Church and St Mary’s Church. Are many of the acts local? We have deliberately chosen a good mix of local

People and national acts, I certainly think we’ve got the cream of the local talent. Of particular interest is a spot specially for Marlborough Rising Talent – we’ve selected some of the best new singers and bands from the area all under 20 years old. There are definitely some acts to keep an eye on there, I’ve been impressed with the talent of these young people. How are tickets going? Where can you buy them? As we speak they have been on sale for a few days, and we are pleased with how they are going. You can buy them online at marlboroughrising. com, at our office at 42 High St (next door to Rick Stein, who have kindly given us the space) or at our ticket office (shed!) outside The Castle and Ball. Tickets will also be available on the day, subject to availability. There are various types of ticket you can buy – full details are online. I imagine it’s been a lot of hard work putting all this together? There’s been a phenomenal amount of background work, and the event has been in the planning since August last year. There’s a great team who have all given their time and skills for free – with a massive amount of work done by everyone on the team. It has been the aim to put together a high-quality event to a professional standard, and I’m very proud to have worked with everyone on the team. We’ve also had fantastic support from sponsors and individuals that have invested their time and money to help the festival get off the ground. It’s a non-profit event, any surplus funds will be used to support the event in following years.
Are any more volunteers needed? By the time people are reading this we will hopefully have a full complement of stewards for the event, however if people are interested it’s always worth getting in touch, as even if not needed for this year it will be useful to have a bank of people we can contact for next time. Stewarding can be fun, we need people that are outgoing and enjoy dealing with the public. We’re particularly interested in anyone that is DBS checked. Community involvement is what we’re all about. Tell us more about your music I see myself as a songwriter, although I enjoy performing. My band Marcella has 3 vocalists – myself and two brilliant female vocalists Angie Holden and Amanda Cramsie-Smith. We play original material, and I would say it is inspired by late 60s West Coast music eg Crosby Stills and Nash, Joni Mitchell etc If anyone is interested in having a listen, we are on soundcloud.com/mike-boothmarcella What are the most memorable performances you’ve done? I performed as part of BBC Introducing which was a thrill – it was a lovely surprise to be contacted by a producer from the BBC who had heard the music online. I always enjoyed performing at the JazzFest, and a few years ago we played at a club in Nice in the south of France, which apparently was owned by the head of the Corsican Mafia!! On a different note, it’s always special to play at weddings – often a song written for the
occasion makes it memorable, for me and hopefully the happy couple too! I’m very excited about performing at Marlborough Rising, we are supporting Turin Brakes. What do you enjoy in your spare time? Apart from helping out with Marlborough Rising, I still enjoy my painting; the main theme being figurative swimmers. I also enjoy cycling, and have a regular route I follow that’s both on and off road. Cycling is something I started when I came to Marlborough – the fabulous surroundings are a pleasure to cycle through. What do you enjoy reading? In line with my work, I’m keen on all things aviation so tend to devour books on that. My favourite is Sagittarius Rising by Cecil Lewis, which is the memoir of a WWI fighter pilot – it’s so evocative you can imagine yourself there. The last book I read though was the autobiography of Graham Nash (Of Crosby Stills and Nash fame), which was a good read. What about music? I listen to a huge variety of music – I tend to move from one thing to the next, listening for a while and then moving on. I appreciate really strong vocal ability and song writing skills – Adele springs to mind, and perhaps surprisingly, Harry Styles, his solo album was unexpectedly good with excellent production. Less well known, but an inspiration to me is a singer called Sam Brooks from Bath – his voice is superb, although he’s not nationally known. Marlborough Rising is on 7-9 September. Filling the town wit h music
Local News
A new music festival aims to fill the gap left by the closure of the Jazz Festival. Marlborough Rising intends to appeal to a broader range of music fans, with their key target market in their 30s and 40s. With over twenty acts, there is something for everyone whatever their age. Headlining are pop group Scouting for Girls, indie folk Turin Brakes and singer and Scouting for Girls wit Joe Stilgoe. Support acts include Tina May, Ben Cipolla and Ray Harris, as well as an exclusive performance form West End Time Machine a group of experienced musical theatre actors with songs from the most successful shows. Jazz and Blues are well represented with performances by Barrel House Blues, Wiltshire Blues Sessions and Emma Jonson. In addition to the seasoned artists, Saturday afternoon provides an opportunity for new talent to entertain the crowd with a number of singers and groups all aged 20 or under performing on the main stage. Entry for this session is free. Priory Gardens hosts the main stage, with supporting stages at the Castle and Ball, St Mary’s and St Peter’s. Tickets can be bought for shows individually and in combination – full details can be found at the comprehensive website marlboroughrising.com.
Marlborough LitFest Big Town Read
Imagine if you could have the author at your book club, well The Big Town Read is the nearest thing. Every year Marlborough LitFest chooses a novel which is suggested for local book groups and individuals to read, ahead of the author appearing at the event.
8
The Big Town Read author for 2018 is Chris Cleave with his novel, Everyone Brave is Forgiven, a historical novel set in London and Malta during WWII. Based on the experiences Chris Cleave of his grandparents – in particular the real-life love letters between them – this book is a departure for the novelist, who is best known for his acclaimed debut, Incendiary (narrated by a widow who lost her husband and child in a terror attack). This event has proved popular with audiences – particularly local book groups – who enjoy the group discussion feel of the event and the ability to have a Q&A session with the author. Free copies of the novel will be available from Marlborough Library during the summer. Kay Newman of Marlborough LitFest said: “The Big Town Read is such a special event as it gives everyone the rare chance to read a book in advance, with friends, and then come together to the LitFest and talk to the author. Chris Cleave will be a brilliant Big Town Read author. He is charming, fun, and just loves talking to people about his work.” Chris will be appearing at 5pm on Sunday 30 September at Marlborough Town Hall. Full details of this and all other LitFest events between 28-30 September can be found at www.marlboroughlitfest.org

Children’s artwork – overwhelm or celebration? I am in the middle of decorating my mum’s house at the moment - a brilliant excuse for a declutter! Hanging by her dressing table was a ‘tapestry by numbers’ attempt of a horse’s head which I produced when I was about eight. “Do you want to still keep this?” I asked. “Absolutely, it’s one of my favourite things!” was her reply. We then laughed as we compared how different things were today and how the biggest challenge for parents now is what to do with the endless stream of masterpieces brought back from school. One client, who was a prolific art collector, was at her wit’s end managing her own twins’ contributions and ended up stuffing things into every storage place she could find! So, in preparation for the new school year, here are a few of my top tips on how best to ‘curate’ these priceless items. Number 1 rule – include your child! You will be surprised how ruthless they can be in discarding their less successful pieces. Create a gallery area: I love the clothes line idea where you quickly pin up each piece as it arrives in the door. Each month: Choose the top two or three the really stand out pieces. Discard the rest.
10
Take a photo of them and store the original in an acid free material art storage box. There are lots of choices online. At the end of the year: Turn your monthly ‘winners’ into a photo book. These are easy to store, easy to enjoy and easy to share. You can keep the originals to hand over later or be really ruthless and throw them away! You can adjust the above process to suit your needs. Some people throw all the artwork into a box and then go through it and pick out the best pieces then. It gives a different perspective over a longer time period. Digitising the artwork means it can be used to produce family presents such as mugs and cards. There are also some fantastic apps around. Doodlenest offers a service where you send them the originals and they photograph everything and produce the book. Similar apps such as Keepy and Artkive are also popular. So, with the new school year about to start you no longer need to feel overwhelmed – create your own system and sit back and enjoy the exhibition!

been coming to stay with local Marlborough families. They have been improving their English and experiencing our culture. This year they took a more detailed look at Marlborough life which included meeting our Mayor and Town Crier whom they chatted to about the Town Hall and our many local traditions. They enjoyed a very warm Marlborough welcome.
MiB Art Competition We have received really positive feedback to our plans for the new play area and Councillors have awarded the contract to Creative Play Ltd. Following consultation with potential young users, their parents, carers and others, some changes were made to the initial design (i.e. the inclusion of additional climbing bars). It has been agreed too that the safety surfacing will be rubber mulch which is well suited to the water meadow environment and will offer year round use. The build, which will take 2-3 weeks, is scheduled to start in early October. Our thanks to Marlborough St Mary’s for inviting us to hold our consultation at the school and also to those who came along and gave us their comments.

In July, our Mayor, Lisa Farrell, popped along to Preshute School together with the Chairman of Marlborough in Bloom, Steve Pascall. They were there to present the winners of the In Bloom Art Competition with their prizes kindly donated by The White Horse Bookshop. The Mayor spent time chatting with pupils and teachers and admiring the rain collection project which was part of this year’s South West in Bloom campaign and visited by RHS judges during their tour of Marlborough. Well done to all entrants of the competition - their masterpieces, all based on the theme of ‘Birds’, were displayed in the window of the former Lighting of Distinction shop in the High Street. What talented children we have in Marlborough.
Retirement Wishes
The Town Council passes its very best wishes to Dr Patrick Hazelwood, former Head at St John’s and Chief Executive Officer at the Excalibur Academies Trust and Jonathan Leigh, Master at Marlborough College.
Both retired during the summer months and both have made a significant impact on education in the town. Presentations of prints of the Town Hall were made to both to mark their contributions to Marlborough and its community.

Wellbeing
Herbal Medicine and Naturopathy When I was training for my Midwifery degree I was introduced to Holistic Therapies as a way to help women, their birth partners and babies through the journey of pregnancy and postnatally. This sparked my interest to learn more and I am now an experienced Holistic Therapist trained in a number of modalities but specialising in Herbal Medicine and Naturopathy. Herbal medicine goes back thousands of years with its roots in the West, India and China, which still influence modern day practices. In the practice of Herbal Medicine, we use the therapeutic properties of plants to aid the body to balance itself. Herbs are made up of complex constituents, which work together within a formula. Every herb has an action, which affects different organs/conditions within the body and each practitioner is trained to prescribe an appropriate herbal formula. For me the joy of being a Naturopathic Herbalist is having a toolbox that offers a wide variety of ways to help people balance themselves. A Naturopathic Herbalist, not only uses herbs, but also Bach flower remedies, tissue salts, detoxification and nutrition. The naturopathic approach is to treat the person as a whole; which includes not only the physical, but also the mental and emotional. The aim of treating the whole person is to improve health and create a sense of wellbeing on all levels. People visit a herbalist for the same reasons they visit a doctor, which are acute and chronic conditions. Some of the reasons people see a Herbalist include: Colds/
16
coughs, sore throats, chest infections, arthritis, menopause, eczema, psoriasis, digestive issues, low energy, fatigue, sleep issues, asthma and general wellbeing. Herbs are safe and suitable for people of any age and can be used safely alongside pharmaceutical medicines. In some cases of chronic illness (such as arthritis) they can alleviate symptoms rather than provide a cure. My specialist interest is fertility, pregnancy and post-natal. An initial consultation takes an hour and together we look at why you have come, your lifestyle, diet, sleep patterns and health history. By doing a detailed consultation it helps me understand your health concerns. I will also use Ayurvedic diagnostic skills which include looking at your tongue and taking your pulses. Ayurveda helps me look at your health imbalances and how these can be treated. Herbal medicine and Ayurveda go hand in hand and it enables me to give you a bespoke herbal prescription and plan that meets your individual health needs. A question that is always asked during a consultation is how long will it take for the herbs and plan to work? The short answer is an acute condition clears quicker then a chronic condition. You have to remember that each person is going to have a different time frame for getting back to optimum health, but this will be discussed during your consultation. I look forward to helping you facilitate your health journey. Rachael Hopwood

Lifestyle
Social Media – a force for good? Social media has become a huge part of society in the past few years, having gone from occasionally using Facebook to catch up with distant relatives and friends, to every day visiting your Instagram feed to see pictures of artistic lattes and selfies with idyllic backdrops. Many people would criticise social media for what it has done to us as a society, using the ever so popular “slave to our screens” metaphor. However, social media has become an extremely powerful industry creating many jobs that we wouldn’t have even thought of 10 years ago, jobs such as Social Media Director and Social Media Influencer. One of the many good things to come out of social media’s rise in popularity is the way that we communicate with each other and share things with people you maybe wouldn’t talk to in everyday life. Social media gives you your own platform and voice to speak about whatever you want and the best part is that you can speak as much as you want or just follow along from the sidelines, there are no rules when it comes to social media, you can be whoever you want to be. These platforms also allow teenagers to become so much more culturally diverse and open to new ideas about religion, gender and identity, with there being so many new forums to communicate with people. My generation are at the forefront of social media having been brought up with it woven into our lives. We understand better than anyone the influences of social media on the way we interact. I can tell you first hand that whilst I spend far too much time on social media than I probably should (despite regularly being told to come off my phone by my mum) I have also been able to interact with people I wouldn’t otherwise have the chance to and be part of communities that I may not have
18
thought to look at through the outreach of various different celebrities and companies. This has helped me to discover what I am passionate about as a human, and made me realise my potential. Social media has also in many ways given me the confidence I probably wouldn’t have had in everyday life. It has expanded my knowledge about so many things as information has become so widely accessible as well as widely promoted through advertising. The way I and many other teenagers use social media is as a creative outlet to express certain thoughts and feelings - there are so many creative ways in which we can do this nowadays, anything from creating a themed Pinterest board, to sharing your pictures with followers on Instagram. Whilst my mum can be embarrassing with the things she chooses to share on her Instagram, it is interesting to see how she, as a member of a different generation, chooses to use the platform, focusing more on holiday pictures and showing her many creative talents such as life drawing. She prefers to keep her following to close family and friends, whereas many teenagers like to keep their profiles public allowing a much broader following. This just shows how social media is so diverse and caters to everyone no matter how much you want to share with the world. Whilst there are so many negative stigmas surrounding this new age of social media, they are balanced by the huge number of positives that come with being the social media generation. Ellie Hill is currently in Year 13 at St Johns school and hopes, after A levels, to study journalism at university.

Pension income options in retirement For those with private pensions, accessing pension money can be a daunting task. This article aims to explain some of the options available to a newly retiring individual. Historically, once a person came of retirement age, they would use their pension money to create a guaranteed, regular income for life, sometimes with a tax-free cash lump sum at onset. Additional features like annual increases, spouses benefit, and guarantees can sometimes be added at a cost. Income was provided in one of 2 ways; a scheme pension or an annuity. A scheme pension is offered by an existing pension, whilst an annuity is purchased from a life assurance company. Once income commences this cannot usually be changed. People are now healthier and living longer than ever before, causing the cost of offering scheme pensions to retiring ex-employees to increase rapidly. Companies are now reluctant to offer these to new pension scheme members due to the ongoing burden this place on them. Annuities are also in decline. The amount of income provided by an annuity is based on the annuity rates at the time of purchase. Annuity rates, like interest rates, are very low. The impact of this means that a larger pension would be required to purchase a similar annuity income than would have been needed 15 or 20 years ago. Rather than exchanging the whole pot in return for a guaranteed income for life, more recently you have had the option to draw the necessary income directly from your funds, thus leaving the balance invested to benefit from the potential for additional growth. In 2015, the government allowed people to access their pension savings more flexibly by removing the requirement to make the income last for life. This meant that for the first time more flexible income streams can be established to suit the particular needs of the individual, however, this does open the door to pension monies running out before death. The way that pension money is taken from a pension can have a significant impact on
30
the amount of income tax that is paid on the money, and careful planning can help ensure that pension money is removed from the pension in the most tax efficient way. In some cases, careful planning has led to thousands of pounds in tax savings for some of our clients. It is important to remember that the intention of a pension is to provide money to live on during retirement. If all available pensions were accessed substantially under the new pension freedoms, once they are empty, there may be little left to live on. There is still a place for annuity purchase, particularly if income guarantees are important or in instances of poor health. I would always encourage anyone reaching retirement who is considering their retirement income options to seek independent financial advice to help mitigate the risk of running out of money during retirement and to access pension money as tax efficiently as possible. Osteoarthritis in Cats Osteoarthritis is very common in our middle-aged to senior cats although it can be seen in any age cat. It causes pain or stiffness, and can occur in any joints. Have you noticed your cat is no longer jumping up to their favourite perches, are they taking a longer roundabout route, using steps or aids to get up or down? Cats can hide signs of pain or illness from us, and often these can be very subtle. A number of useful queries to ask yourself come under four main headings; 1: Mobility This can be seen in reluctance to jump up or down from furniture that they used to, or sleeping in different, easier to access sites. Do they no longer jump up on the bed or sofa for cuddles? Do they hesitate before jumping? They can also experience difficulty using the cat flap as this often requires either a crouch or lifting legs to manoeuvre through the flap and over the lip. Lameness or stiffened gait may be seen, but is often masked by more than one joint or limb being affected. Some may show evidence of litter tray accidents, missing the tray, or reluctance to climb into high sided trays. 2: Changes in grooming behaviour. The first signs may be a matted and scurfy coat, but you can also get overgrooming the painful joints and hair loss in these areas. Any change from their normal coat shine is worth bearing in mind; are they grooming their front paws and chest, but not over their pelvis and spine?
32
3: Temperament changes Has your cat stopped or reduced their interaction with their family, or seem less happy in response to being stroked? Do they seem less tolerant of being picked up or being handled in any way? Are they less tolerant around children, or other pets? Are they seeming grumpier, or starting to vocalise or swat others with their paws? 4: Changes in activity level Are they playing less or going outside less frequently? Have they stopped hunting or exploring the outdoor environment as frequently? Are they sleeping more, or hiding away? One of the first signs actually noted can be overgrown claws due to lack of activity, and reduced scratching. In more severe cases the claw can actually grow completely round and puncture the pads. This list is not exhaustive, but if you have any concerns that your cat might be showing these signs, a visit to your vet and a check over, especially for the older cat is a very good idea.
