Editor’s Letter Beauty with a purpose

Thanks to reader Cheryl Elias for the lovely front cover pic this month. These poppies were photographed in July, and seem to have caused much comment. I hear they are a cultivated crop and used to make pharmaceutical products - featured on the local TV news, the poppies are in a “secret location” presumably because they would potentially be of interest to criminals! I love the fact that something so beautiful has a practical purpose too. We have two great competitions this month - you can win a meal at the newly refurbished PizzaExpress and tickets to Giffords Circus for their opening night - why not enter one or both? Our interviewee this month is Janet Louth, Chair of Friends of Savernake Hospital and the Community, read all about her on page six. Finally, good luck to all those expecting A level and GCSE exam results in August, fingers crossed you get the results you want! See you next month,

Janet Louth Janet Louth is Chair of The Friends of Savernake Hospital and the Community (colloquially known as the Friends), and also runs her own business, Louth Removals. She lives in Marlborough and has three children and five grandchildren. Are you from Marlborough originally? My mother was from Marlborough, but moved away when she married my father who was a Major in the army. I was born in Pakistan, and moved around a lot as a child. When my father was sadly killed in a car accident when I was 14, my mother brought the family back to Marlborough to live, to be near her family. I’ve been here ever since. How did your removal company get started? My late husband Ron started the business in 1975. Unfortunately, he died young, and I was widowed with three young children at the age of 35. The business was a godsend as it was already established, and I could effectively run it from home and manage it around the kids (quite unusual in those days). If there was a recession and business was hit I also had other part time jobs, variously in social services, special needs care and agency care work, but the removals business carried on throughout. How is the business now? It’s smaller than it once was, but still busy. We have two permanent members of staff and some part timers who can be called upon when needed. We have a small

6

lorry (which is sufficient for many properties, and means easier to get access to properties), and can hire in a bigger 7.5 ton lorry when needed. I also have a storage facility. We get a lot of repeat business, I have clients that have used us seven or eight times over the years. How did you get involved with the Friends? It was around 2007, when the Minor Injuries Unit was first threatened with closure. I met Val Compton who was campaigning to keep it open, and who later took the Primary Care Trust to Court over the closure. I offered to help out, and things went from there. When my children were young I often found myself at the minor injuries unit because of one scrape they got into or another, and I didn’t like the thought that families would have to travel so far to get treatment, and also thought that it was the wrong use of A & E services. Having become involved with Savernake I joined the Friends committee and eventually became the Chair. My son Daniel is Dyslexic, and I founded the local Dyslexia Association when he was young, so I

had experience of running a voluntary organisation, which has come in useful. What do the Friends do? As it says on our website “We are a charity set up to support individuals and organisations involved in healthcare both at Savernake Hospital and in the wider community, with the aim of enhancing the quality of life of those affected by ill health and or disability, and supporting their care and wellbeing.” This can involve giving grants to worthy causes, or providing the hospital shop for patients and staff. The shop is a great service as it also runs a trolley service to the wards. What sort of grants do they give? A wide range of things from something as small as providing a cordless vacuum cleaner for the community nurses’ pool cars, through to making more substantial donations to causes such as the Prospect Hospice at Savernake, and the Brighter Futures Radiotherapy appeal. Community grants have included supporting the Jubilee centre, and.the Link service that provides lifts for people eg to hospital, We also paid for the

People defibrillators that are in strategic locations around Marlborough and local villages. I was a bit sceptical of these originally, but they have all been used, some several times and have definitely saved lives. We are always interested in hearing about new grant requests - as long as the project or charity is related in some way to health care we are happy to consider it. The Friends are in the enviable position of being fairly cash rich - how did that come about? Savernake Hospital has been at the centre of the Marlborough Community for many years, and it holds a special place in many people’s hearts. People of my generation and older have very fond memories of the help they received at the hospital, and a substantial number of Marlborough residents were born there. This means that we have been very lucky in benefiting from legacies in people’s wills, reflecting the deep affection for the hospital and their desire to help the local community. Can anyone become a Friend? Yes, it’s £1 for an annual subscription or £30 for a life membership. We’re also always looking for volunteers to help run the shop or to be on the committee - we’re particularly interested in finding someone who would be willing to be treasurer as the current one is stepping down. It’s not too arduous, last year we had around 6 meetings. You know quite a lot about the history of the hospital? Yes, I worked with Val Compton to put together an exhibition on the history of the hospital in 2009 - it was held in St Peter’s Church and had some fascinating photos and artefacts. Before that

I wasn’t terribly interested in history, but now I am absolutely fascinated by social history. I would love to see Marlborough have a dedicated museum - it nearly happened when there were ambitious plans for the Town Hall, but unfortunately that project didn’t get off the ground due to unfounded fears over the cost. Perhaps it will happen one day. What are the Friends’ priorities for the future? As an immediate priority I am really keen to sort out the high temperatures on Aylesbury Ward in the hospital - it can be unbearably hot for the staff and patients - we have provided fans, but would love to find a better solution. Generally, I am keen to continue supporting the hospital and the community, and finding deserving causes for grants. What do you enjoy most about your role? I enjoy achieving things through Friends, and making a difference. What do you like least? I can’t bear having to deal with some of the higher ups in the NHS, who seem to prefer sending emails round and round rather than make a decision. It’s generally much easier to talk to someone on the phone! What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I enjoy gardening - even though my garden isn’t that big and I mostly have plants in containers. My grandson describes it as “pootling” in the garden. I enjoy nature, and think we are very lucky in Marlborough to have places like Stonebridge and Coopers Meadow. My daughter Anna works for Action for the River Kennet, and I like to support their work.

I love spending time with family - Anna and my grandson Harry live in Marlborough so I see a lot of them, my other two children are further away, but I like to see them when I can. Do you like to eat out locally? Eating out is a fairly rare occurrence for me - it tends to be special occasions. I have enjoyed eating at The Marlborough, even though I wasn’t impressed when they changed the name from The Sun, and also like Godot’s. I am a bit of a home bird really though, as I have very plain tastes so find I’m not keen on a lot of things on restaurant menus. What book are you reading? I don’t seem to get a lot of time for reading for pleasure - I currently have “The Lady in the Van”, a play by Alan Bennet on the go, but despite it being fairly short I’ve been reading it for a while! What do you like to watch? At the end of the day I like to sit down in front of the TV and watch “mindless rubbish” and documentaries. I find some reality shows quite fascinating, even though I realise they are manipulated for TV. Recently I watched a programme about couples who didn’t meet their spouse until they were walking up the aisle - it was surprisingly thought provoking! What are your pet hates? Pointless rules really get on my nerves - for instance some of the health and safety rules seem to be rather excessive these days! WIN!

A family ticket to Giffords Circus Roll up, roll up, the circus is coming to town! Giffords Circus makes its annual visit to Marlborough Common between 20 August and 1 September, and we have a family ticket to the opening night performance to be won.

This year’s show is entitled Moon Songs, an all-new show from this family run circus. Directed by Cal McCrystal, Moon Songs invites audiences to enter the world of the Victorian Lunar Park, a fairground run by larger than life illusionist and man of magic and mystery, Odoroff, and his Little Man assistant, David.

Afficionados of the circus will recognise firm favourites, such as Tweedy the Clown, Bibi and Bichu the Ethiopian jugglers, Nell Gifford of course, and the usual appearance of the bear and the goose. New acts include Bibi

10

and Bichu’s cousins from Ethiopia, all 13 of them! Newcomers will enjoy the mix of theatre and skilled circus acts. In this year’s show, magician Odoroff tries and fails to command this giant troupe of dancing gymnasts. Clown Tweedy is shot from a cannon and then turns himself into the man in the moon, the bear gallops past on a pony, the carousel horses come to life, the weather in the tent turns wintry, the jugglers are suddenly upside down, the little man laughs and chaos reigns in this topsy turvy lunatic world.

showman’s wagons and billowing tent have become a summer staple in village greens, market towns and cities. For full details of shows and times see www.giffordscircus.com Established in 2000 by Nell and Toti Gifford, Giffords Circus is renowned for its eclectic circus theatre fusion style. They experiment with the circus form, weaving theatre, opera, dance and puppetry into a 90 minute fun filled show. They are always idiosyncratic, beautifully designed creations featuring a live orchestra, clowns, acrobats, horses, handmade costumes and a much loved goose. Giffords Circus shows have amassed a loyal following over the last 14 years and their signature burgundy and gold

To enter To win the family ticket (2 adults and 2 children) to the opening night show at 7.30pm on 20 August, email your name and address stating Giffords Circus in the subject line to aj@marlboroughtandc.co.uk, or send your name and address and telephone number to Giffords Circus Competition, Ivydene, High St, Wanborough, SN4 AD. The New Greyhound

Marlborough in Full Bloom

South West in Bloom judges, Jane Pagano and Kim Parish, came to town on Tuesday 14 July and were met with a Marlborough to be proud of. Our community really came together to make the day a memorable one. Anne Crawley, Chair of the In Bloom Committee, was delighted with the support from businesses, shops, schools and community groups. Lots of thanks to all those in and around the High Street who made such efforts to participate in the citrus theme – clearly evident right along the High Street with zesty oranges and yellows everywhere. The floral displays outside our pubs were fantastic. Though support came from the Town Council and Wiltshire Council, the real difference was made by volunteers whose efforts were seen greening up and cleaning up all over the town.

On arrival, the judges were greeted by Town Crier, Luke Callaghan, and met by the Mayor, Councillor Margaret Rose, Anne Crawley and members of the In Bloom Committee. The Town Clerk gave a presentation to summarise everything that had been going on since last year’s first and very successful entry, all highlighted by

photographs taken by Eric Gilbert. Anne and the Town Council’s Grounds and Estates Manager, Richard Beale, then took the judges on a tour taking in The Green, Wye Gardens, St Peter’s School, Marlborough’s Waterfront, Cooper’s Meadow, Priory Gardens, Marlborough College and so much more. After lunch in the Polly Tea Rooms, it was time to judge our three It’s Your Neighbourhood entrants – Stonebridge Meadow, the Old Victorian Cemetery and Manton. The party were driven to these in style in a vintage Rolls Royce. All the IYN projects really stood out as examples of community groups working to show horticultural, environmental and voluntary excellence. We now have to wait until Thursday, 24th September to hear the results at a special awards ceremony at the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth. Well done to everyone.

Alice in…………….. Priory Gardens

What was it the Mad Hatter said? “There is a place. Like no place on Earth. A land full of wonder, mystery and danger!” He was right. That place was Priory Gardens on Sunday 5 July at Alice’s Enchanted Family Picnic

hosted by our Mayor. No danger though, just lots of fun to help celebrate the 150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Our Mayor even had a stand-off with the Queen of Hearts!

Artistic Director, Anna Friend and the Marlborough Young Actors showed real talent, never stepping out of their Wonderland characters during an afternoon packed with families and their young children enjoying arts and crafts, face painting, competitions and various stalls. There were excellent performances too from pupils of Marlborough Academy of Dance and Drama all choreographed beautifully by Cheryl Heuston. The Mayor was delighted that so many came along to enjoy a summer’s day in a really special public open space right in the centre of Marlborough - a community event for the whole family. A very friendly White Rabbit collected for the Mayor’s chosen cause - the Brain Tumour Trust. Thanks also to Tesco for its sponsorship and help with the event.

Filming the Landscape On a particularly lovely day in May I found myself in field at West Kennet waving a long pole in the air. This might have looked crazy but was the end of two days spent filming the sights (and sounds) of the glorious North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) with David Sully of Red Kite Video. The idea for the film had started some months earlier. As part of a plan to raise awareness of the North Wessex Downs, we (the team at the local AONB Partnership) had decided to develop a presentation that would tell the “Story of the North Wessex Downs”, starting more than 140million years ago when the chalk was formed and then looking at how people have shaped the landscape over the last 6000 years and then focusing on why this has become such as special place for wildlife. The idea was tell the story to local groups so they could see why the area is worth conserving and enhancing.

We then realised we needed a film to accompany the story - so the landscape could speak for itself. On the first day of filming we captured the Vale of Pewsey,

14

the Alton Barnes White Horse and Martinsell Hill ,then headed to West Woods to capture some bluebells and onto Marlborough. The first floor balcony from the Town Hall provided an excellent vantage point for the bustling market before moving on to Savernake forest and the Grand Avenue.

On the second day we visited National Trust locations including Avebury and the Kennet Long Barrow. This is an area where people live and work as well as visit so we wanted to include people out and about. We were delighted to find so many people (and their dogs) were willing to act as extras in the film. In particular, we should thank the men thatching the roof in Wootton Rivers who did the same bit of roof several times, the cyclist in Manton who got soaked going through a puddle rather than around it just to give us more interest and the man with several

dogs who was at the end a long walk at Martinsell Hill - the dogs were delighted to set off again up the hill again just for the camera. To add some real drama to the film there was a third day of filming, this time with a drone, directed by Pete Mayes of Withintwo photography. This gave some stunning sequences at the Wilton Windmill, Crofton Beam Engines and up above the 3000 year old white horse at Uffington. The idea was to try and include the natural sounds too, so that’s why I ended up waving the extended microphone about in a field trying to capture birdsong and the sounds of the wind through the grass. Was it worth it ? The film is on the home page of the North Wessex Downs AONB website and is available on youtube for everyone to use to promote the area to visitors. We’d love to hear your feedback. Gardening

August in the Garden August is a time for enjoying your garden, spending time socialising and admiring the results of your hard work earlier in the year. Many early summer flowering perennials have finished flowering and can be cut back to keep borders tidy, prevent the spread of disease and to give room for the later flowering perennials. Border stars this month include Agapanthus, Penstemon Dahlia and Leucanthemums. If you did cut back earlier flowering perennials such as Salvia and the hardy Geranium they should reward you with a second flush of flowers. If you have any gaps in your borders make a visit to a garden centre to see what is looking good at this time of year. Echinacea, Rudbeckia and Asters will burst into flower soon and attractive architectural grasses such as Miscanthus sinensis and Stipa gigantea with their graceful plumes will take your borders through late summer and into Autumn. Keep planters and hanging baskets well watered and feed regularly. Deadhead perennials, roses and annuals often to prolong flowering and during hot, dry spells water border perennials and any new plantings if they look like they need it. Weed growth should have slowed in the hotter weather but continue to pull out any

34

that you do see to prevent weeds taking water and nutrients from your plants. Hebe’s and Lavender can be trimmed after flowering. Cut off the spent flowers and trim growth back by about 2.5cm. This will help to keep the shape and stop plants becoming too woody at the base. Reduce lawn mowing to once a week in hot dry weather and keep the blades set high. Don’t worry if the lawn starts to look a bit dry and brown it will soon recover with some rain. August is an ideal time to try your hand at taking cuttings to increase plants stock. This can be done with more tender perennials like Penstemon or Osteospermum’s. Using a sharp knife cut off a 8-10cm young shoot which has no flowers on just below a leaf joint. Dip the cut end in rooting powder and push into a small pot filled with seed compost. Water well and leave to drain before covering with a clear plastic bag. Keep on you windowsill or in the greenhouse and in about six weeks the cutting should have rooted. Keep ponds clear of debris to prevent Algae build up,

shallow water features can become green quickly at this time of year so apply an Algaecide to help keep water clear. Also regularly top up water features in hot weather as water will quickly evaporate. In your vegetable garden continue sow spring cabbages for early crops of greens next year and continue to water and weed regularly. Strawberries can be planted now in pots or in a prepared bed if you have the room. Pick runners beans regularly. If you have too much produce many vegetables can be frozen to ensure nothing is wasted. In the greenhouse remove old leaves from tomatoes and other crops to help ripening by allowing more sunlight to reach the plant. Deal with any sign of disease as soon as you spot it, this is particularly important if you have a greenhouse full of produce as pests and disease will breed rapidly in such a hot and humid atmosphere. Start to harvest tomatoes along with cucumbers and peppers as they ripen. If your not off on holiday take time out in the sun to enjoy your garden. By Jill Blackwood

Cohabitation I am going to talk briefly about the use of cohabitation agreements to protect unmarried couples, this is something these articles have looked at before, but given the results given by the Office of National Statistics last week, as set out below, it is an increasingly pertinent topic: • In 2014, 51.5% of people aged 16 and over in England and Wales were married or civil partnered while 33.9% were single, never married. • Between 2002 and 2014 the proportions of people aged 16 and over who were single or divorced increased but the proportions who were married or widowed decreased. • The increase between 2002 and 2014 in the percentage of the population who were divorced was driven by those aged 45 and over, with the largest percentages divorced at ages 50 to 64 in 2014. • In 2014 around 1 in 8 adults in England and Wales were living in a couple but not currently married or civil partnered; cohabiting is most common in the 30 to 34 age group. • More women (18.9%) than men (9.8%) were not living in a couple having been previously married or civil partnered; this is due to larger numbers of older widowed women than men in England and Wales in 2014. Put into context, none of these results is of any surprise, especially the last result indicating that men have a hard lot. Society is increasingly taking a more

36

positive approach to divorce when spouses’ relationships have failed, rather than stigmatising people to remain in relationships which make them unhappy. Equally, society no longer frowns on cohabitation, the figures state 1 in 8 adults are cohabitating and it is the fastest growing relationship type in the country. But whereas for those people getting divorced there is a weight of law that governs and protects the parties as to how assets are divided, for cohabitation the law has failed to keep pace with the changes in society. As the law currently stands the legal protection afforded to spouses includes considering contributions each party has made to the marriage, either financially or domestically, earnings and potential earnings (including pensions), properties and other financial assets, any debt or financial responsibility, ages and length of the marriage, the standard of living during marriage. The aim is to achieve a fair settlement. Conversely, cohabitation currently does not have any legal status, there is little legal framework, and assets are not “fairly” shared. It is also important to emphasise that there is no such thing as a “common law marriage” acquired through the passage of time, and many people in cohabitation are caught out by this mistaken belief. The most pointed example of this is where one partner, Partner A, raises the children and looks after the family home, which is owned in the sole name of the working partner, Partner B. If the relationship fails Partner A has no right to maintenance payments from Partner B, nor any automatic legal right to the family home, and in all, legally, there is very

limited recognition of the contributions made by Partner A. If Partner B does not voluntarily agree a settlement, the only way Partner A can establish an interest in the family home is though court action and the results can be paltry. Currently, cohabitation agreements are the only real protection against the above scenario. They allow the parties to document who owns what and in what proportions should the relationship breakdown. It can also cover details as to interests in solely owned property, debts, inheritance and wills, and how disputes will be resolved. All people currently cohabiting or considering moving in with their partner should give serious consideration to having a cohabitation agreement. Many may say this is unromantic, but until the law has caught up with society we all have to be realistic; the statistics above amply show that relationships are now more fluid, and cohabitation agreements currently offer the best protection from future heartache.
