Editor’s Letter Success!

What wonderful news it is that the appeal to raise the money for the new Prospect at Savernake centre has already been not only achieved, but exceeded. Fantastic efforts have been made all across the community, from big events like Moran’s coffee and cake day before Christmas that raised over £1700, and local schools’ green fundraising day; to small individual efforts from people holding coffee mornings, selling off treasured possessions or just making a donation. Such is the success that the money raised now stands at nearly £95,000, probably more by the time you read this. No time to rest though, as the fundraising needs to continue, to pay for the ongoing costs of running such an invaluable service. The generosity of people in the community is marvellous, as of course this is not the only charity that is supported in the area. There are many causes that couldn’t exist without the support of local people, from charities that need to raise millions like Prospect and The Air Ambulance, to smaller more personal causes such as Charlie’s Charity and the Finlay Foundation which do valuable work. It is estimated that in the UK individuals donate over £10 billion pounds per year, which equates to £153 for every man woman and child in the country. With recent happenings around the globe, it’s easy to forget that actually there is more good than bad in the world, and it is successes like these that help remind us. Well done to everybody! Hope you enjoy the magazine this month,

People

John Blake John Blake is the new director of Marlborough College Enterprise Ltd, the commercial arm of Marlborough College whose main responsibility is the running of Marlborough College’s world famous Summer School. He lives in Faringdon with his wife Tory and their three children, Alfred, 10, Bessie, 8, Lilia, 5, and Minnie the Cocker Spaniel. What led to you being the head of enterprise at Marlborough College? Prior to coming here I was the Commercial Director at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, the home of the Chelsea Pensioners and host of the Chelsea Flower Show, and before that I was the Head of Sales and Marketing at Ascot Racecourse. Both of those involved dealing with activities that were not the primary purpose of the business/institution and provided excellent experience for the role here. Although I thoroughly enjoyed the job at the Royal Hospital, it meant that I was away from my family during the week, and I really missed them. It was a wonderful opportunity to do a job with as much potential as this one, and to be able to go home every night. It’s the shortest commute I’ve ever had.

6

So, apart from the Summer School, what does your role involve? Obviously the Summer School is the biggest part of the job as it is a huge undertaking every year, (much as Chelsea Flower Show and Royal Ascot were in my previous jobs), but as well as that I am responsible for generating additional revenue for the College through business activities. This money helps pay for Bursaries at the College, and helps with the upkeep of the estate. Activities include retail through Crosby and Lawrence, events such as Feast of Food and the Marlborough Spring Fair and so on, and I am also looking at Leisure opportunities. In the future we are considering opening the Swimming Pool to the public, and possibly the gym. It’s important that any activities we undertake are not detrimental to the everyday running of the school, so that has to be borne in mind.

How different is it working for Marlborough College? It’s not dissimilar to the role at the Royal Hospital, although that was a military organisation where only myself and one other on the management board were civilians – my boss was a Major-General, and even the Matron was a Colonel! Instead of schoolchildren, there were Chelsea Pensioners who are really a breed apart – what a fantastic group of people. At Ascot, again I was involved in generating income from non-racing activities – we basically repositioned Ascot as a leisure venue. We held events designed to bring non-racegoers racing. These were held at the same time as a race day, so people could see what racing was all about. Events included concerts, a beer festival and racing theme days.

People There are changes afoot for the Summer School aren’t there? Yes, it’s very exciting – this year Summer School will run for four weeks instead of three for the first time. There are over 500 courses in a vast range of subjects and we expect to have around a thousand visitors a week. The Summer School is a market leader, so my goal is to help it evolve rather than give it a radical overhaul. We’ve some fantastic new courses including Metal Detecting, Learn to Brew (participants need to leave their cars at home as there is significant tasting involved!), Dance Fusion and Teddy Bear making (taught by the lady who made the Downton Abbey teddy bear) to name but a few. There are many old favourites returning as analysis shows that 70% of attendees are repeat visitors. Anecdotally there are some people that have come back every year since 1975! It’s not surprising with the hundreds of courses on offer. What is the mix of visitors to Summer School? It’s a fascinating group of people – 17% of visitors are from overseas, 38% are from the SN postcode, the rest are from all over the country. We have every age group from very young children up to people in their seventies. It’s very popular with families who can all learn something new, and is also great for people on

their own as the courses are very social and it’s easy to make friends. When I joined in July last year, I did a Mountain Biking course and there were only two of us from the UK, it made it even more enjoyable meeting people from other countries. There have been developments with the entertainment programme too? That’s right, we now have gala performances on a Tuesday as well as a Friday; we’ve added a family film night on Wednesdays and there will be an open air theatre performance of the Three Musketeers by the Ilyria theatre company. We’ve got some great people coming including an evening with Giles Brandreth, and a performance by Courtney Pine. Gala performances are open to the local community, tickets are £15 for Tuesdays and £20 for Fridays. What do you enjoy most about your job? I really enjoy working with the people here. We have a fantastic team who do an amazing logistical task organising all the courses and putting the programme together. I love Marlborough College, and Marlborough itself although I am still getting to know it. I also enjoy having clear goals for the next 5 years. They are ambitious, but very achievable.

What do you like least? The A346 between Marlborough and Chiseldon! What do you like to do in your spare time? I confess I am a MAMIL (Middle Aged Man in Lycra) and really enjoy cycling. Luckily my wife also enjoys it. In Winter I probably do 40-50 miles at the weekend, and in the Summer 80 -100 miles. I also like to run to keep fit, which I do in my lunchtimes at work. I’m lucky in that I can bring my dog Minnie in to work about three days a week, and she comes with me running on the Manton Estate. She’s very well behaved in the office and everybody loves her, the only drawback is she can get rather muddy if we’ve had wet weather. I have to exercise, otherwise I think with the amount of food I like to eat I would be rather portly! Have you had much chance to eat out in Marlborough? Not really yet – although I do pop along to The Food Gallery for a sandwich. They’re absolutely fantastic – better than anything you’d get on the King’s Rd in London. Marlborough Summer School runs from 12 July to 8 August. For full details see www.summerschool.co.uk or call 01672 892388. Course brochures are available in local libraries, or can be ordered via the website or telephone.

Savernake appeal target smashed!

A huge thank you to the people of Marlborough and the surrounding villages is the message from the fundraising team at Prospect Hospice after a £75,000 community appeal target was smashed in January. This means that the centre can open as planned, and the team are now busy raising funds to run its services for local people on an ongoing basis When it launched the appeal to open an outpatient centre at the hospital in Marlborough, the charity, in partnership with the Great Western Hospital Foundation Trust, set a fundraising target of £75,000, having already secured £125,000 from a charitable trust. Since then, local people have helped the appeal gain strong momentum, with almost £95,000 now raised. “We have been overwhelmed by the generosity shown by the people of Marlborough and the surrounding villages towards our appeal,” said Richard Hammond, Prospect Hospice’s director of income generation. “It has been humbling to see so many individuals, schools and businesses show their support. Special thanks must go to the Friends of Savernake Hospital for their

10

match funding of £20,000. It is hugely encouraging that the community clearly shares our vision to bring Prospect Hospice services closer to home for local patients, families and carers who look to us when our help is needed.” He continued: “The appeal has just been the start though. While it is wonderful that we have the money to open the Centre, and some funds towards ongoing running costs, we will need the support of the people who have raised this magnificent sum to sustain it in the years ahead. Our focus now turns to raising the funds to support the ongoing costs of providing our care in the area.”

Get Waterfit!

Get Waterfit for 2015 is a new campaign that makes it easy for people to use less water every day while saving money on their energy and metered water bills. It is free and is helping Marlborough to becoming one of the most water efficient towns in the country. Karen Simpson, from Get Waterfit for 2015 partner Thames Water, said: “Installing a water-efficient showerhead and using our shower timer, save-a-flush bag and tap inserts could save a family of four more than £180 per year on metered water and energy bills.” Action for the River Kennet (ARK) is championing Get Waterfit for 2015 because the water supply in Marlborough and Hungerford comes from the River Kennet. Every drop of water saved is another drop left in the river for wildlife. Get Waterfit for 2015 home

visits are FREE and take about 30 minutes. Nick Dickenson, from Marlborough, leads the Climate Energy installer team locally and will be visiting homes in Marlborough and Hungerford over the next few weeks. He will be carrying identification and wearing Climate Energy-branded clothing. Helen Kelly, ARK’s water efficiency expert, said: “Our most popular free products are shower heads that use less water without reducing performance, eco-betas which convert single-flush toilets to give you the choice of a long or short flush and kitchen swivel taps that fit on the end of a mixer tap and add air into the water, so you use less without reducing pressure.” Residents have been brilliant so far and in the Marlborough area we have already saved a total of 24.4 million litres of water per year. That’s great news for wildlife and all the people who now pay lower household bills. To book your Get WaterFit for 2015 visit please phone 0800 358 6665 quoting ‘Kennet’ between Monday and Friday, 9am to 7pm. Visit www.riverkennet.org for more details.

The Old Victorian Cemetery Interest in the Old Cemetery is gathering pace and there will be another Community Clear-up Day on 1 March 2015.

The Town’s success in winning a number of awards and silver gilt status in 2014 will be, hopefully, followed by another huge community effort in achieving gold status in 2015. Don’t forget that community groups and neighbourhoods can also enter the SWiB awards scheme ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood 2015.’ The deadline for entries is 14th March. More details at www.southwestinbloom.org.uk

Tradesmen/ Suppliers Everyone is invited to meet at the entrance to the new cemetery in Frees Avenue at 10am. As with our other sessions, it’s important to wear appropriate clothes — gloves, stout shoes or boots. Some tools will be provided but extra rakes, shears, loppers or secateurs are welcome. Plus a flask of something to drink! Anyone interested in joining ‘Friends of the Old Victorian Cemetery,’ please contact the Town Council offices as we will be meeting soon to discuss future plans.

Local News

Summertime – and the living ain’t easy… You may be familiar with Vanessa Lafaye as the founder and musical director of Marlborough Community Choir, the acapella singing group that rehearses in St Peter’s Church and has been known to catch Waitrose shoppers unawares with impromptu performances, often at Christmas. What you may not be aware of is Vanessa Lafaye the soon to be bestselling author. Published on 15 January, her debut novel Summertime is set in her native Florida during the 1930s, and concerns a scandalous episode in US history, set against the backdrop of a natural disaster. It was inspired by a newspaper article she came across whilst visiting her family, about a “spectacle” lynching in 1935, for which no one was ever prosecuted. The story reignited Vanessa’s desire to write, which had left her after a diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer which sapped all her creative energy, (she had previously written two novels in her spare time which had gained her an agent but not a publisher). Once in recovery Vanessa’s creativity was directed towards the choir, which still forms a huge part of her life, providing immense personal satisfaction along with many friends, and fuelling her faith in the healing power of singing. This love of music is reflected in one of the characters of Summertime who loves to sing. Of course, the title itself is the name of

16

during the war, and were now subjected to the same old prejudices. Now the book is published Vanessa will be very busy promoting it, both locally and further afield. The launch party was held at Marlborough Town Hall a few days ago, with all the guests attending in 1930s style clothing. Marlborough Community Choir performed for an appreciative audience and of course one of the songs they sang was Summertime. The book is now available to buy in The White Horse bookshop (you can pick up a signed copy), and also available for download. the iconic song from George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. On her return to the UK she began to research more about the period in the article, and discovered the story of the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, along with the history of how black veterans of the First World War were treated appallingly on their return to the US, many shipped to Florida to live in camps and work on a construction project during the hurricane season. This became the backdrop for the events that unfold in the book which has been described as part social history, part love story. It is told from the viewpoint of four of the key characters, two black, two white and touches on the difficulties faced by returning black soldiers, who had been treated as equals

On March 7 there will be a discussion evening at St John’s school that book clubs and individuals are welcome to attend. Tickets are available from White Horse Bookshop, and entry is free. Once you’ve read the book you can email any questions/discussion topics to whitehorsebookshop@ btconnect.com, to inform the conversation on the night. Usually £12.99, the book is available from the shop at £9.99 for those attending the discussion evening. Vanessa is already planning her second book, part of her publishing deal. Here’s wishing her every success in her new career as an author, and continued success with Marlborough Community Choir.

Post Festive Season Blues The Season of Goodwill can be a brief affair, with statistics showing that on the first working day back after the festive season there is a 27% increase in the number of enquiries regarding divorce. That the Christmas period can cause a strain on relationships is unsurprising given the ever increasing build-up period of advertising and shopping, while money worries can also be a big factor on a marriage with the constant pressure to buy bigger and more expensive presents, and the obligation to have family get- togethers with barely tolerated relations causes tension and arguments. Equally, the extra time together as a couple can emphasise that the relationship is not working and solidify doubts. It is no wonder then that many couples’ relationships are at breaking point at this time and they need very little encouragement to be pushed over the edge. Family law solicitors are very familiar and

34

experienced in dealing with all manner of reasons for divorce. Our legal system gives couples and their legal representatives the choice of 5 facts, called Facts A to E, as the reason for applying for divorce, that being said, we find that Facts A and B are the most common, and both certainly seem more prevalent at this time of year. Fact A relies on the committing of adultery by either party, while Fact B is the most frequently used, this being unreasonable behaviour, which is a very wide category and can cover a multitude of conduct such as violence, mental abuse, drinking, gambling, and in some extreme cases, not doing the housework. As we have said Fact C, Desertion, is almost never used and facts D and E, 2-year and 5-year separation are rarely used nowadays. The divorce process is a stressful thing and a good Family Team will do everything it can to minimise that stress by handling all the paperwork and correspondence for its Clients. They should aim to achieve this in a relatively short time to achieve the best possible outcome. They should also be very experienced with the financial matters that follow the grant of the Decree Nisi and which must be agreed before the

Decree Absolute can be given. Family law solicitors will help every step of the way and, as is the case in many situations, can also help with the Contact issues where children of the family are involved and do the best they can to keep costs down at this time. If you are struggling with the Post Festive Season Blues, and contemplating divorce, make an appointment for a free 30 minute consultation with DGR Law. Karen Salmon DGR Law 01672 511797

Preparing for Summer The summer flowering bulbs are beginning to make their appearance in the centre and we hope we have some to tempt you with…

If you angst over what to grow with what, we have some new selections in the shape of collections to ease your pain! ‘Bees and Butterflies’ looks a good one – containing Liatris spicata, Dahlia ‘Happy Butterfly’, short Gladiolus ‘Guernsey Glory’ and Anemone ‘Sylphide’. There are also colour-themed ones such as ‘Sangria’ with Dahlia ‘Mary Evelyn’, Cosmos astrosanguineus (Chocolate Cosmos) and Oxalis triangularis and ‘Strawberry Daiquiri’ with Dahlia ‘Pretty Woman’, Begonia ‘Blushing Star’ and Habranthus robusta.

Anemone Sylphide

Then there are the individual Dahlias and we have chosen some stunning ones in all shapes and sizes – fully double, pom-pom, semi-doubles and singles including the ‘Bishops’, and ranging from stonking big ones, down to the more sedate shorter ‘patio’ range. A completely new introduction called ‘Moulin Rouge’ will be introduced which has scarlet base petals and white upper ones. Another favourite are the cactus ones that look like they are in the middle of exploding! Along with these, come Lilies, including thepollen-free ones

36

such as ‘Broken Heart’ and ‘Double Sensation’, along with the gloriously scented and ever-popular ‘Mona Lisa’ and ‘Casa Blanca’. If you want to try Lilies in a border rather than a pot then look no further than the beautifully swept-back spotted flowers of ‘Flore Pleno’ and ‘Speciosum Rubrum’. Gladioli are making a come-back and what’s not to like - they make a superb cut flower and range from the burnt orange of ‘Africa’, cerise pink with a white throat in ‘Jo-Jo’ to the deep, velvety purple of ‘Black Star’. They are not all tall and the shorter ones, usually with the word ‘nanus’ in their names (meaning small) are brilliant in pots or in the border. Look also for Gladiolus callianthus (Acidanthera) which has a wonderful fragrance and is best grown in pots. Other fabulous things arriving will be the so-called Cottage Garden plants. Here you will find delights such as Iris germanica (bearded Iris), Crocosmia, Ranunculus, Polianthes (Tuberose), Anemone de Caen, Nerine, Paeonia, Astrantia, Papaver orientale, Ixia, Agapanthus, Alstroemeria and Zantedeschia (Calla Lily). On the soft fruit front, we will be having packs of canes of raspberry, blackcurrant, redcurrant and gooseberry along with asparagus and rhubarb collections. Onion sets and garlic packs will also be in for spring planting along with something new – Vegetable Growing Kits in wooden trays which contain onions, garlic, shallots and 5 seed potatoes for First Earlies, Second Earlies and Maincrops. We thought these would be brilliant for a

Agapanthus

first-time veggie grower or as a gift. The loose Cyclamen hederifolium corms that we had last year were so brilliant that we’ve gone for them again. They are huge and fabulous value. Along with these we will have loose bulbs of Crinum powellii (Indian Elephant Flower) – again, huge bulbs.

Dahlia Moulin Rouge

We are also having packs of ‘Patio Plants’, namely Oleander and Thunbergia (Black-Eyed Susan) for you to grow on; for some reason they are extremely difficult to get hold of any other way. There is loads to look forward to and bulbs make a brilliant contribution in our gardens. Don’t forget that most of them like a sunny position in a free-draining but decent soil. Any that you grow in pots can be transplanted into the garden if you fancy a change. Woodborough Garden Centre, 01672 851249 All products subject to availability.
