Editor’s Letter A New Look for the New Year
As you flick through the magazine this month you’ll notice it looks slightly different to usual. Having kept the same look since launch in 2008, it felt like the right time to refresh the look of the magazine and give it a makeover for the New Year. Not vastly changed, nonetheless I hope you agree that it looks a bit more up to date. Happy to hear any comments you may have. On the subject of keeping up to date, we are having another stab at making good use of our Facebook page, which was started a while ago but not really given a lot of love or attention. Hope to use it to keep you up to date with What’s On in the area, and to link you to an online version of the magazine. Just search for Marlborough Town and Country and press “Like” if you are interested! I hope you enjoy reading the magazine this month – our interviewee is April Nobes, who runs the Kumon Study Centre in Marlborough, an American living in the UK for the past 20 years or so, she has an interesting perspective. You can also read the latest from St Peter’s Press Club, the Transition Streets Initiative and all our usual regulars. Don’t forget to mention us if contacting one of our advertisers. Enjoy!

April Nobes April Nobes runs Marlborough’s Kumon Study Centre, which offers extra tuition in Maths and English for children up to the age of 18. She lives in Marlborough with her husband Guy and their two children Phoebe, 17, and Max, 15. You are from the US originally aren’t you? Yes, I was brought up in Rochester, New York, which is on Lake Ontario, and about an hour away from Niagara Falls. When people hear I’m from New York State, they always expect me to know New York City really well, but Rochester is about 450 miles away from NYC. (It’s a bit like Americans saying to someone from Liverpool “Is that near London?”) What was it like growing up there? I’m not sure I had a typical American childhood, I was born in the 60s and my parents could be described as “hippies”. This meant I went to rather unconventional schools where the children decided what they wanted to learn. This was great when I was 10/11, as basically all we did was play! It was very unstructured, and did cause me a few difficulties when I went to a more regular school later on, as I found it hard to fit in. My last school was called “The School Without Walls” and again was rather different. Although I didn’t get a conventional education I did find it possible to catch up, and I eventually got a BA in English. You met your husband in Japan, how did you end up there? I was teaching English as a foreign language for Berlitz,
6
when I became friendly with one of the students – I was asked to be a chaperone for her trip back to Japan, and I decided that I would try and get a job out there. I wanted to move away from home, and this gave me the opportunity to gain independence and really take charge of my life. I initially taught English at language schools, then ended up teaching at the International school where my pupils were age 8-9. Did you enjoy your time in Japan? Absolutely, I was there six years and it was a great time. In the early 90s there was a very strong ex-pat community, and I made many friends and enjoyed a good lifestyle. Everyone had a lot in common as strangers in a foreign land, and we were all about the same age. We got plenty of opportunities to travel and explored China, Australia and other countries in that part of the world. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Why did you come to Marlborough? Guy applied for a job at Marlborough College and
was successful. Although we loved Japan, we wanted to bring our children up in the UK, near to family. (Guy is originally from Hampshire). As someone who has always been a city girl, it was a bit of a culture shock to move to such a small town! It took me a while to get used to it, but I really love it here now. How did you get involved with Kumon? My son Max needed a little help with his Maths when he was in year 8, he went to Kumon for around 5 months, and it really helped consolidate his learning. This was my introduction to the system, and I found it fascinating. I was working as a librarian at St Francis School, and was looking for a full time job. (I had recently gained an MA in Librarianship and wanted a bigger challenge). I soon realised that any jobs in this area would involve a commute, and started thinking of Kumon as a possible alternative. I started by helping as an assistant, and discovered that the Marlborough Instructor was interested in selling up. After looking into it thoroughly I decided to take the plunge.

People How are you enjoying it? I’m loving it. My previous experience with studying and teaching has been invaluable, and on top of that I have worked through the programmes myself, which gives me real empathy with the students. The training at Kumon is good, and although I was not a natural mathematician, having worked through the programme helps me help the students when they are struggling. Why is Kumon so successful? It is a tried and tested system that helps children reach their full potential in Maths or English. Each child is assessed to establish where they are in their learning, and they start at their level and work at their pace. Effectively, the system is tailored for each child. It is great at establishing a study routine involving coming into the centre once or twice a week, and working through their programme at home. Children enjoy the feeling of success they get, and it gives them the skills to feel confident at school. Parents play a vital role in supporting the children with their work at home, as it is the completion of the worksheets and sitting down to work for around 20 minutes a day that builds knowledge and skills through practice. Success depends on teamwork between children, instructor and parents. Describe a typical student? I guess there are two types of student – those that need extra help to achieve their potential eg they have struggled with a concept and their class has moved on before they’ve got it; and those that are gifted and want to work ahead of where their classmates are. Kumon is great for both types, from little children up to sixth form age groups.
What do you get up to in your spare time? We have fairly recently invested in two gites in Brittany that we rent out to holidaymakers, and that we visit ourselves. We are in our second year of ownership, and are still learning! It’s a beautiful area to visit, with the coast, the countryside – where we are is very rural. I’m also studying Bridge with Andy and Mo Hill which has improved my playing, and I’m a member of a book club which I enjoy. As an American in the UK, do you notice a lot of cultural differences? Not so much now as I have been here over 20 years. When I first arrived I was struck by what you might call the British reserve. For instance if we went to a dinner party and got on with people, I would feel like we were good friends, but often the people I had met didn’t feel the same! It takes a while to get to know people. Also, I found shopping difficult, it felt like people weren’t interested in serving you – although that has improved a lot over the past few years! Being American does give me a social advantage, as people are always curious to know where I’m from, how I came to live here etc. It’s a good icebreaker. Where do you enjoy eating out? I like Cole’s for a special occasion, or the Outside Chance which is close to us. I like to eat things that I wouldn’t cook at home. What about shopping? I love Waitrose – it’s like family! Fabulous produce and great staff. As far as other shopping goes – I’m on a clothes diet!
No clothes, handbags or jewellery for a year! I was getting a bit carried away with my spending so I don’t need anything. It has had a very beneficial effect on my bank balance! But it has also made me appreciate what I’ve got and take stock, which has been really useful. Presents are allowed though, so I dropped plenty of hints for Christmas! What are you reading at the moment? A History of the World in 100 Objects by Neil MacGregor. I tend to prefer non-fiction, although I read plenty of fiction with my book club. Novels I’ve enjoyed recently include Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand, On Chesil Beach and The Kite Runner. I was less enamoured with Gone Girl, Brighton Rock and Us. What about music? I tend to listen to the radio mostly. I like Radio Neptune which is a French channel, as I like the music they play. I occasionally pick up on a new group – in the past Keane, and recently London Grammar, What do you enjoy watching? I don’t do TV really – I always seem to have something better to do! It can put me at a social disadvantage sometimes, as I miss out on some cultural references. I do enjoy the cinema though, and recently saw Mr Turner which had some fantastic performances. I also like to go to the Corn Exchange in Newbury to watch foreign language films. I’m not into your typical blockbusters! Neighbours take up the challenge of Transition Streets
Cutting household bills; saving energy; sharing gardening tips; retrofitting homes; strengthening neighbourly spirit… these are just some of the elements of a new programme, currently available for free to all residents of Marlborough Community Area, facilitated by Transition Marlborough. Dubbed ‘The Practical Action Plan for you, your home, your street, your friends, your family”, Transition Streets makes making effective changes not just easier, but more enjoyable. It boldly claims to “save you money and bring you and your community closer together.” A free workbook is provided for each household to explore with others in the neighbourhood, usually in bi-weekly gatherings in each other’s houses. It cuts through the massive amount of often confusing information that’s out there, and provides you with reliable facts and practical tips from the experts. It provides local information relevant to all of us living here in Marlborough and the surrounding villages, including advice about grants
that can help make updating your house more affordable. Transition Streets coordinator Alexandra Wax explains, “Transition Streets is a very local programme designed specifically for anyone living here in Marlborough and the surrounding villages. It shows you the easiest ways to improve your home’s energy efficiency; save money on your water and utility bills; and reduce waste.” “It explores easy, practical ways to take advantage of cheaper transport options and the great value, healthy, local food available in our town. It also helps you understand what’s behind fluctuating oil prices and climate change, and what this means for you, your family and your local community.” The first step is to start a group with your neighbours; to do this, or join an emerging group, contact Alexandra Wax on 07771 347 379 or email streets@ transitionmarlborough.org. You can then agree a date for the first meeting of the group, which she will facilitate, and bring along a workbook for each participating household. You can learn more about the programme and what other local groups are up to at www.transitionmarlborough. org/Transition+Streets

The New Greyhound
Citizen of the Year 2014
a huge part in their local communities.
Our long serving Town Crier, Alfie Johnson, was made Marlborough’s Citizen of the Year at the Christmas Lights Switch-On on Friday, 21 November.
Benchmarking
Earlier in the year, the Town Council commissioned a benchmarking exercise. This draws together data and compares Marlborough with other similar sized towns across the country. Some very positive news for the High Street with evidence of high footfall, high average spend, popularity of the markets and more. There’s room for improvement though with car parking concerns and a lack of provision of affordable shops. The report is available on our website at www.marlboroughtowncouncil.gov.uk
Alfie has been making public announcements or ‘shouts’ in the town for more than 20 years but his voluntary work goes much further. He has tirelessly helped to raise funds with the Carnival, Fun Day and other charity committees. He has been a popular visitor to our primary schools, a volunteer at the Jubilee Centre, he played the euphonium for the Town Band, was an actor with the Amateur Dramatic Society, sang with the Kennet Singers and even rang bells at St Mary’s. Born in the front bedroom at 23, Kingsbury Street in 1930, as a young man he undertook National Service and served in the Territorial Army. Alfie is a marvellous ambassador for Marlborough and truly deserves this award. Our thanks go to all those who nominated Alfie and other members of the community for this award. Runners–up were Anna Forbes, Karen Dobie, Nigel and Joy Kerton and sadly now deceased, Judith Lefever. Alfie and all the runners-up have played
Kim Wakeham (second left) with others at the Old Cemetery
The Old Victorian Cemetery The Town Council is interested in hearing from those who would like to join a Friends of the Old Victorian Cemetery group. There has been a good deal of interest in the history of the Old Cemetery and archaeologist, Kim Wakeham, gave a fascinating talk on 30 November after which volunteers stayed on to help plant and clear areas of the graveyard. This is all being led by Councillor Margaret Rose and if you
would like to get involved, do contact the Town Council offices for more information.

St.Peter’s Press Club
Greeks and Beaks At St. Peter’s we have a theme each half term which brings together different subjects. There is sometimes a special day with visitors, exhibitions or activities at the end of this time to make a memorable end to our weeks of work. Years 3 and 4’s theme has been GREEKS: their gods and heroes and their lives. We used all we had learned over six weeks to make a Greek Play in a Day. Ben, an actor from the Treehouse Theatre Company, helped each class stage its own play and we came together in the afternoon, to make one four-act performance. We all took part dressed in our togas and had Greek food too: pitta bread, figs, olives and hummus.
The first play from year 4 told the story of how Zeus, king of the gods, beat Kronos a Titan, and restored all the other gods to life after Kronos had swallowed them whole. The second play, from a year 3 class concerned the Olympic Games. First a bull was sacrificed to make sure the gods would look kindly on the games and then we had races, wrestling, javelin and discus throwing and chariot racing. The winners were presented with a trophy and an olive wreath.
16
The third play, from year 3 showed life in a market place and the final year 4 playwithin-a-play was a theatre performance of the story of Persephone. Like a real ancient Greek theatre, all the actors wore masks, even the chorus.
Our special day took our minds back to Hogwarts for we were visited by a group of different owls: tawny and barn owls, a little owl and a big eagle owl. The snowy owl, like Harry’s owl Hedwig, was sadly too nervous to come into a room with all of us.
It was an exciting day and one we would certainly not forget. Years 5 and 6’s theme was ABRACADABRA, with a mixture of different sorts of magic A lot of the work was about Transfiguration,”You know, turning something into something else,” as Hermione explains in the book we all read, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”. This story is mostly based on Voldemort’s plan to steal the Philosopher’s Stone which not only changes base metal into gold, but contains the Elixir of Life. Voldemort believed that this Elixir would bring him back to full life and power so that he could kill Harry Potter and turn the world to evil. He fails. We did some shape-changing magic of our own: turning flour, yeast, water and salt into delicious bread; and using oxygen and water to turn iron into rust. We even changed a mystery mixture back into its separate parts. By sieving and heating we were even able to discover an invisible ingredient - salt.
It was amazing to see the owls fly from their perches to take the food from their keeper. We could feel the chill air move as they flew silently by. They looked beautiful, but we could see that they could be vicious with their cruel beaks and sharp talons like knives. These special days are fun, unexpected and different from everyday school. Because of that they help make what we have learned stick in our minds forever.. Writers and researchers: Nancy, Isabel, Emma , Matilda, Caitlin, Adam, Callum, Gracie, Ruby, Elise, Rosie, Esme and Oscar.

Put your best foot forward this New Year Looking after your feet is as important as going to the dentist or taking your car for an MOT, but for many of us it's still at the bottom of the to do list. In the winter months dry skin and cracked heels are a common problem, often caused due to dry skin on the feet becoming dehydrated. These, and many other foot problems can be prevented with regular foot care and routine visits to your Podiatrist. Emma, our registered Podiatrist recommends a few simple tips for healthy feet in winter.
TOP TIPS FOR HEALTHY FEET IN WINTER: The single best thing you can do for your feet daily is to moisturise them with with a cream intended for feet. The skin on your feet is much thicker than other parts of your body, so a normal body moisturiser just won't cut it. A urea based foot cream is perfect, replacing any lost moisture. Wear a fleece lined insole, easily purchased from any regular chemist, to prevent against chilblains and cold feet. Always wear appropriate footwear for the weather conditions – ensuring your feet are kept warm and dry.
Emma prides herself on a 'total foot care' approach. “When you come in with a corn, you won't just get your corn treated, you will have all your foot care needs taken care of”, says Emma. A typical treatment consists of a cleansing foot bath, followed by a thorough foot assessment, a vascular and sensory test, your toenails cut and filed, any verrucas, corns, callouses or nail issues will be treated, and to finish, an indulgent and nourishing foot massage leaving you with happy, healthy feet. If you're suffering from foot pain or dry and cracked heels, don't just put up with it, let Emma take care of it for you. You will feel like you have a new pair of feet and wonder why you didn't visit a podiatrist years ago!
SPECIAL OFFER: Book before the end of January and get your first appointment for £25 (£10 saving). To book an appointment call Emma on 01672 516580

Gardening
Gardening in the New Year At this time of the year, some plants that can be overlooked in summer, come into their own. Coloured stems of Cornus (dogwoods) and Salix (willows) look superb in the winter sunshine on a crisp day. The berries of Cotoneaster (a brilliant bee-plant, by the way), persist well, probably better than most and on the tree-like proportions of Cotoneaster cornubia, look stunning.
Other plants offer us scent in the form of flowers held along leafless stems. Such glories as the under-used Chimonanthus praecox (Wintersweet), Lonicera x purpusii and fragrantissima, Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ and ‘Charles Lamont’ are seriously good additions to the winter garden. Just cut a few stems and bring them into the house – miles better than those things concocted in laboratories and factories! Scent also comes in the shape of the prepared Hyacinths given as gifts in baskets over the Christmas period. These are exactly the same bulb as the garden/bedding Hyacinths that normally bloom in March, except that they have been temperature-treated to force them into flower earlier than they normally would. This means that you can plant them out
32
in the garden once they have gone over as a houseplant, and they will revert to their normal flowering period. There is still plenty of time to get bare-rooted things into the ground as well – such things as deciduous trees, hedging, soft fruit and roses. The only proviso is to stay off the soil if it is too wet to work properly as you will do damage to its structure. If bare-root stuff arrives in the post and you are not able to plant it immediately, pop it in a bucket of water for a day or two and then either whack it in a pot of compost or heel it in a part of the garden that may not be the chosen planting place, but is at least accessible. You can lift it out to plant properly at a later time. If you didn’t get around to buying dry bulbs for a spring show then you will be able to pick up ready-potted ones such as Crocus and Snowdrops. Obviously, buying them like this will cost you more money but if you want to
perk up a couple of winter pots then they are ideal. A mention of pansies here – they often get fungal leaf spots as well and there is no cure. Simply pick off the worst leaves or if the whole plant is looking sickly, hoik it out and pop in some of those bulbs instead. On the subject of bulbs, I think that buying Snowdrops ‘in-the-green’ is by far the most efficient way to grow them. You can order them by the 10’s – personally, I order by the 100’s! They will come through the post once they have flowered and been lifted by the growers and will need to be planted right away. Growers advertise online and in gardening magazines. Don’t be mean with them – a drift is the look to go for rather than ‘hunt the snowdrop’! Woodborough Garden Centre will also be having some again this year – they are in bundles of 25 but you’ll need to be quick! Woodborough Garden Centre

Legal
Non-Marriage Cohabitation Agreements The number of couples who decide to cohabitate rather than marry has increased by 31% in the past 10 years. Many people in these circumstances live under the misconception that they are in a ‘Common Law Marriage’, which will provide a legal framework in times of separation or financial problems. Legally Common Law marriage has not existed since 1753, although when applying for a mortgage or working out child support the cohabitees are considered the same as a married couple; however, when it comes to such matters as inheritance, property and pensions this is not the case. Many practitioners now advocate the use of Cohabitation Agreements which are drawn up by a Solicitor and both parties to deal with all the assets of the relationship should there be a separation. A solicitor can help both parties work out the details in a structured and professional manner. An Agreement helps clarify matters for those
34
involved. Details such as the responsibility for paying the bills, who pays for what, who looks after the children, who does the DIY and who does the cleaning may seem like obvious small points, but in the event of separation these areas of responsibility often cause the most upset. One must also consider the effects on the relationship of death, divorce or illness and working through these issues can be stressful and emotional but a solicitor can help with all the issues. Solicitors are often asked to help with property disputes on separation. The law is clear on the fact that if you are not married and live together in a property, which is legally held in the name of one person, then the other person must prove that they have a beneficial interest in the property. This must be done by showing an explicit agreement, such as a Cohabitation Agreement, that both parties intent to have an interest in the property, or an implicit agreement from actions of the parties such as; paying the mortgage jointly, paying for home improvements or contributing towards the deposit.
guarantee that the Court will take into consideration the Agreement, as they are not legally binding, but it does demonstrate the willingness of both parties to enter into a contract. The Court does have the power to vary the terms of the Agreement as well, but the absence of an Agreement will more often than not lead to protracted and costly legal proceedings and if only for this reason Cohabitation agreements should always be considered. However, in the event that after separation matters go to Court there is no

Road Test
Audi TT TFSI The third generation of Audi’s fast becoming iconic TT has just landed… and everybody knows about it thanks to the truly spectacular TV ad, which is designed to appeal to the 8 year old boy who lurks inside every car obsessed man. The original TT arrived back in 1998 and caused an immediate splash thanks to its ultra-stylish looks, strong performance and legendary VW build quality. This latest version is instantly recognisable as a TT; the dimensions, proportions and styling cues are nearly identical to the original car but it has been subtly updated and looks as sharp as a Paul Smith suit. The changes are most obvious from the front – I love the razor sharp headlights, angular grill and the cooling vents that would be right at home on a Lamborghini. But, actually, it is when you climb inside that the new TT really bowls you over completely; the interior is simply a wonderful place to be.
The air vents look like the turbofan of a Rolls Royce jet engine and the steering wheel could have come from a Le Mans racer, but the multimedia display where the instrument binnacle should
36
be is the real star of the show. You can change the display from classic view with prominent speedo and rev counter to something straight out the Starship Enterprise and every piece of information you could possibly desire is available in one place. As you would expect from Audi, the fit and finish of every last bit of plastic is absolutely perfect. At the moment there are just two engines available, a 2 litre TFSI petrol with 227bhp and a similar capacity diesel with 182bhp that is also astonishingly frugal. A blisteringly fast 305bhp TTS version arrives next year. The TFSI is good for 0-62 in 6 seconds dead with a top whack of 155mph, more than adequate for most people’s needs. The power goes to the front wheels as standard or Audi’s excellent Quattro 4 wheel drive system is available as a cost option. A slick 6 speed manual gearbox is also standard, with the lightening quick flappy paddle version again bumping up the price by some margin. From the outset, motoring journalists have criticised the handling of the TT as uninvolving, probably because of the front wheel drive. For this third generation model, the body has lashings of aluminium used in its construction, making it lighter and more rigid than ever before. The steering has been replaced with a setup that is even more direct, remarkably
precise and provides masses of feedback. A Drive Select system comes as standard and offers a Sport mode that firms up the suspension and sharpens the throttle response to racing car levels. Despite all this, some journalists still carp on that it’s not as good as a Porsche. Maybe so, but, take it from me, if you want to drive very fast around corners without having to worry about dying in a ball of flaming wreckage, this is the car for you. That traditional Audi Achilles heel, an overly firm ride, is still present but to a lesser extent. The base spec model that I drove is positively comfortable, though the S Line version with 19” wheels still hammers over every bump and pothole. One change that won’t be so welcome is the price list. The entry level model comes in at just under £30,000 on the road, £4,000 more than the previous model, and you don’t have to tick many boxes on the options list to push that up towards £35k. On the plus side, the new TT comes very well equipped as standard. Even so, for a car with such stunning looks, potent performance, excellent build quality and that wonderful interior, it seems like pretty good value for money. Form an orderly queue please.
